Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a serious global health burden because of its high morbidity and mortality rates. Hypoxia and massive lactate production are hallmarks of the CRC microenvironment. However, the effects of hypoxia and lactate metabolism on CRC have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to develop a novel molecular subtyping based on hypoxia-related genes (HRGs) and lactate metabolism-related genes (LMRGs) and construct a signature to predict the prognosis of patients with CRC and treatment efficacy. Methods Bulk and single-cell RNA-sequencing and clinical data of CRC were downloaded from the TCGA and GEO databases. HRGs and LMRGs were obtained from the Molecular Signatures Database. The R software package DESeq2 was used to perform differential expression analysis. Molecular subtyping was performed using unsupervised clustering. A predictive signature was developed using univariate Cox regression, random forest model, LASSO, and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Finally, the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapeutic agents before and after hypoxia was verified using in vitro experiments. Results We classified 575 patients with CRC into three molecular subtypes and were able to distinguish their prognoses clearly. The C1 subtype, which exhibits high levels of hypoxia, has a low proportion of CD8 + T cells and a high proportion of macrophages. The expression of immune checkpoint genes is generally elevated in C1 patients with severe immune dysfunction. Subsequently, we constructed a predictive model, the HLM score, which effectively predicts the prognosis of patients with CRC and the efficacy of immunotherapy. The HLM score was validated in GSE39582, GSE106584, GSE17536, and IMvigor210 datasets. Patients with high HLM scores exhibit high infiltration of CD8 + exhausted T cells (Tex), especially terminal Tex, and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS)−Tex in the immune microenvironment. Finally, in vitro experiments confirmed that CRC cell lines were less sensitive to 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan under hypoxic conditions. Conclusion We constructed novel hypoxia- and lactate metabolism-related molecular subtypes and revealed their immunological and genetic characteristics. We also developed an HLM scoring system that could be used to predict the prognosis and efficacy of immunotherapy in patients with CRC.

Abstract Inferior air stability is a primary barrier for large‐scale applications of garnet electrolytes in energy storage systems. Herein, a deeply hydrated hydrogarnet electrolyte generated by a simple ion‐exchange‐induced phase transition from conventional garnet, realizing a record‐long air stability of more than two years when exposed to ambient air is proposed. Benefited from the elimination of air‐sensitive lithium ions at 96 h/48e sites and unobstructed lithium conduction path along tetragonal sites (12a) and vacancies (12b), the hydrogarnet electrolyte exhibits intrinsic air stability and comparable ion conductivity to that of traditional garnet. Moreover, the unique properties of hydrogarnet pave the way for a brand‐new aqueous route to prepare lithium metal stable composite electrolyte on a large‐scale, with high ionic conductivity (8.04 × 10−4 S cm−1), wide electrochemical windows (4.95 V), and a high lithium transference number (0.43). When applied in solid‐state lithium batteries (SSLBs), the batteries present impressive capacity and cycle life (164 mAh g−1 with capacity retention of 89.6% after 180 cycles at 1.0C under 50 °C). This work not only designs a new sort of hydrogarnet electrolyte, which is stable to both air and lithium metal but also provides an eco‐friendly and large‐scale fabrication route for SSLBs.

Abstract To gain insight into the reduction mechanism of water on the dynamic destabilization failure character of coal under mining disturbance conditions, the effect of water on the damage and energy dissipation feature of coal was investigated via cyclic uniaxial compressive loading–unloading test, acoustic emission (AE) monitoring technology, and theoretical analysis. It manifests that the softening effect of water on the mechanical properties of coal is still remarkable, lower uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus, while greater axial strain and higher Poisson's ratio are observed under the cyclic loading–unloading condition. Water‐saturated specimens dissipate more energy during the cyclic loading–unloading process, which reduces the proportion of input energy accumulated in the coal mass, thus lowering the burst proneness of coal. A greater amount of damage generates in air‐dried specimens than that in water‐saturated specimens at the first cyclic loading–unloading cycle, while lower damage increments are observed in the following cycles. This may be the reason for the minimal energy dissipation of air‐dried specimens in the following cycles. The elastic modulus behaves logarithmically versus the increasing cyclic loading–unloading cycle counts. The energy dissipated due to the damage evolution and plastic deformation of coal specimens positively correlates with the energy released by AE activities, the AE energy in air‐dried specimens has a greater concentration around the peak axial stress and a stronger correlation with the dissipated energy. The cumulative AE energy and energy dissipation density are linearly correlated during the cyclic loading–unloading process, which indicates a possibility in estimating the damage evolution and the dynamic failure risk of coal via cumulative AE energy, under the cyclic loading–unloading condition.

This review explores the emerging role of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) in the detection of breast cancer biomarkers. We discuss the fundamental principles and fabrication techniques of SPEs, highlighting their adaptability and cost-effectiveness. The review examines various modification strategies, including nanomaterial incorporation, polymer coatings, and biomolecule immobilization, which enhance sensor performance. We analyze the application of SPEs in detecting protein, genetic, and metabolite biomarkers associated with breast cancer, presenting recent advancements and innovative approaches. The integration of SPEs with microfluidic systems and their potential in wearable devices for continuous monitoring are explored. While emphasizing the promising aspects of SPE-based biosensors, we also address current challenges in sensitivity, specificity, and real-world applicability. The review concludes by discussing future perspectives, including the potential for early screening and therapy monitoring, and the steps required for clinical implementation. This comprehensive overview aims to stimulate further research and development in SPE-based biosensors for improved breast cancer management.

Oxalic acid (OA) is a predominant constituent in kidney stones, contributing to 70–80% of all cases. Rapid detection of OA is vital for the early diagnosis and treatment of kidney stone conditions. This work introduces a novel electrochemical sensing approach for OA, leveraging vanadium disulfide (VS2) nanoflowers synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis. These VS2 nanoflowers, known for their excellent electrocatalytic properties and large surface area, are used to modify glassy carbon electrodes for enhanced OA sensing. The proposed OA sensor exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity across a wide linear detection range of 0.2–20 μM, with an impressively low detection limit of 0.188 μM. The practicality of this sensor was validated through interference studies, offering a promising tool for the early diagnosis and monitoring of kidney stone diseases.

BackgroundInsulin resistance has been proven to be associated with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, the prognostic value of the triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index, as a marker for insulin resistance (IR), is still unclear. Therefore, we conducted research to explore the prognostic value and the predictive performance of the TyG index in postoperative RCC patients.MethodsA total of 651 postoperative RCC patients from January 2016 to June 2018 were enrolled in the final study. Their clinical and laboratory parameters were collected from medical records and through follow-up by phone. The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index was calculated as follows: TyG = Ln[TG (mg/dl) × FBG (mg/dL)/2]. The overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were identified as the main outcomes.ResultsThe TyG index is an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR = 2.340, 95% CI = 1.506 to 3.64, P < 0.001) and DFS (HR = 2.027, 95% CI = 1.347 to 3.051, P < 0.001) in postoperative RCC patients. Kaplan–Meier survival curves of the different TyG index levels showed statistically significant differences in terms of OS and DFS (log-rank test, P < 0.0001). Furthermore, the TyG index was significantly associated with RCC risk factors.ConclusionThe TyG index is significantly associated with RCC survival. The mechanisms responsible for these results may contribute toward the improvement of RCC prognosis and immunotherapy efficacy and the development of new immunotherapeutic targets.

BackgroundMucinous adenocarcinoma (MAC) is a unique subtype of colorectal cancer and its prognostic value remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic differences between patients with MAC and non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (NMAC).Methods674 patients with NMAC, 110 patients with adenocarcinoma with mucinous component (ACWM) and 77 patients with MAC between 2016-2019 were enrolled in the study. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were performed to analyze the factors associated with prognosis. Predictive nomograms of overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) for patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma were constructed. Confounding factors were eliminated by propensity score matching (PSM).ResultsCompared with patients with NMAC, patients with MAC were more likely to have a tumor located at the proximal colon, present with a larger tumor diameter, more advanced T stage, higher frequency of metastasis, deficiency of mismatch repair, and elevated preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen. Recent advancements in polymer-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) fabrication have revolutionized the development of wearable sensors for health monitoring. LbL self-assembly has emerged as a powerful and versatile technique for creating conformal, flexible, and multi-functional films on various substrates, making it particularly suitable for fabricating wearable sensors. The incorporation of polymers, both natural and synthetic, has played a crucial role in enhancing the performance, stability, and biocompatibility of these sensors. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the principles of LbL self-assembly, the role of polymers in sensor fabrication, and the various types of LbL-fabricated wearable sensors for physical, chemical, and biological sensing. The applications of these sensors in continuous health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and management are discussed in detail, highlighting their potential to revolutionize personalized healthcare. Despite significant progress, challenges related to long-term stability, biocompatibility, data acquisition, and large-scale manufacturing are still to be addressed, providing insights into future research directions. With continued advancements in polymer-assisted LbL fabrication and related fields, wearable sensors are poised to improve the quality of life for individuals worldwide.

N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) plays a key role in the occurrence and development of various cancers. Fat mass and obesity‐associated protein (FTO) was is involved in multiple cancers owing to its demethylase activity, and the molecular mechanism underlying FTO-promoted bladder cancer proliferation and migration via the regulation of RNA stability requires further investigation. In the present study, FTO was upregulated in bladder cancer and related to poor prognosis. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments showed that the upregulation of FTO promoted bladder cancer proliferation and migration. Mechanistic studies showed that FTO enhanced the stability of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) mRNA in an m6A-dependent manner, thereby increasing STAT3 expression, which subsequently promoted P-STAT3 expression and activated STAT3 signalling pathway. Overall, this study revealed that the critical role of FTO in the progression of bladder cancer and could provide a novel avenue to regulate oncogene STAT3.

In the DC power distribution systems, One-cycle control (OCC) based three-phase VIENNA rectifiers achieves high power factor (PF) easily. However, under unbalanced grid conditions, the fundamental phase shift between the input current and corresponding phase voltage obviously deteriorates PF, especially when carrier-fundamental frequency ratio varies. In this paper, based on the mathematical model of the rectifier with OCC control under unbalanced grid conditions, the fundamental phase shift problem is analyzed in detail, including variable carrier-fundamental frequency ratio. Moreover, aiming at solving this problem, a fundamental phase shift compensation scheme is proposed. By introducing a second order generalized integrator (SOGI) to generate the complex vector grid currents feedback, which combines with unbalanced grid voltages, three-phase modulation signals are dynamically modified to eliminate the fundamental phase shift. To facilitate the digital control for the rectifier, the digital implementation of the proposed compensation scheme is described in this paper. At last, a digital-controlled VIENNA rectifier experimental test bench is built, and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by experimental results.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a deadly form of cancer worldwide. Patients with locally advanced rectal cancer and metastatic CRC have a poor long-term prognosis, and rational and effective treatment remains a major challenge. Common treatments include multi-modal combinations of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy; however, recurrence and metastasis rates remain high. The combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy (radioimmunotherapy [RIT]) may offer new solutions to this problem, but its prospects remain uncertain. This review aimed to summarize the current applications of radiotherapy and immunotherapy, elaborate on the underlying mechanisms, and systematically review the preliminary results of RIT-related clinical trials for CRC. Studies have identified several key predictors of RIT efficacy. Summarily, rational RIT regimens can improve the outcomes of some patients with CRC, but current study designs have limitations. Further studies on RIT should focus on including larger sample sizes and optimizing the combination therapy regimen based on underlying influencing factors.

BackgroundMucinous adenocarcinoma (MAC) is a unique clinicopathological colorectal cancer (CRC) type that has been recognized as a separate entity from non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (NMAC), with distinct clinical, pathologic, and molecular characteristics. We aimed to construct prognostic signatures and identifying candidate biomarkers for patients with MAC.MethodsDifferential expression analysis, weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-Cox regression model were used to identify hub genes and construct a prognostic signature based on RNA sequencing data from TCGA datasets. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), cell stemness, and immune infiltration were analyzed. Biomarker expression in MAC and corresponding normal tissues from patients operated in 2020 was validated using immunohistochemistry.ResultsWe constructed a prognostic signature based on ten hub genes. Patients in the high-risk group had significantly worse overall survival (OS) than patients in the low-risk group (p < 0.0001). We also found that ENTR1 was closely associated with OS (p = 0.016). ENTR1 expression was significantly positively correlated with cell stemness of MAC (p < 0.0001) and CD8+ T cell infiltration (p = 0.01), whereas it was negatively associated with stromal scores (p = 0.03). Finally, the higher expression of ENTR1 in MAC tissues than in normal tissues was validated.ConclusionWe established the first MAC prognostic signature, and determined that ENTR1 could serve as a prognostic marker for MAC.

Abstract Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy that is endemic to China and Southeast Asia. Radiotherapy is the usual treatment, however, radioresistance remains a major reason for failure. This study aimed to find key radioresistance regulation models and marker genes of NPC and clarify the mechanism of NPC radioresistance by RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of the differences in gene expression profiles between radioresistant and radiosensitive NPC tissues. A total of 21 NPC biopsy specimens with different radiosensitivity were analyzed by RNA sequencing. Differentially expressed genes in RNA sequencing data were identified using R software. The differentially expressed gene data derived from RNA sequencing as well as prior knowledge in the form of pathway databases were integrated to find sub‐networks of related genes. The data of RNA sequencing with the GSE48501 data from the GEO database were combined to further search for more reliable genes associated with radioresistance of NPC. Survival analyses using the Kaplan–Meier method based on the expression of the genes were conducted to facilitate the understanding of the clinical significance of the differentially expressed genes. RT‐qPCR was performed to validate the expression levels of the differentially expressed genes. We identified 1182 differentially expressed genes between radioresistant and radiosensitive NPC tissue samples. Compared to the radiosensitive group, 22 genes were significantly upregulated and 1160 genes were downregulated in the radioresistant group. In addition, 10 major NPC radiation resistance network models were identified through integration analysis with known NPC radiation resistance‐associated genes and mechanisms. Furthermore, we identified three core genes, DOCK4, MCM9, and POPDC3 among 12 common downregulated genes in the two datasets, which were validated by RT‐qPCR. The findings of this study provide new clues for clarifying the mechanism of NPC radioresistance, and further experimental studies of these core genes are warranted.

Abstract Background PLEK2 (pleckstrin) could bind to membrane‐bound phosphatidylinositols and further promote cell spread. Recently, several studies have noted the importance of PLEK2 in tumor metastasis. However, the role of PLEK2 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains to be elucidated. Methods The PLEK2 expression in HNSCC was identified using Oncomine, Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), UALCAN databases, and western blot analysis. Prognosis analysis was performed using Kaplan–Meier plotter, DriverDBv3, UALCAN, UCSC Xena, and GEO databases. Single‐cell functional analysis was further performed using the cancerSEA database. The PLEK2‐related co‑expressed genes were identified, and gene set enrichment analysis was performed using LinkedOmics. Furthermore, the top 10 hub genes were identified using the cytoHubba plug‐in of Cytoscape. Then, gene enrichment analysis, pathway activity, and drug sensitivity analyses of the hub genes were performed using the R package “clusterProfiler” and GSCAlite. Finally, the UCSC Xena browser was utilized to explore the hub gene most likely to play a synergic role with PLEK2 in HNSCC. Results Elevated expression of PLEK2 was observed in HNSCC and even in HNSCC subgroups based on diverse clinicopathological features, portending a poor prognosis in HNSCC. PLEK2 was correlated with metastasis and hypoxia in HNSCC, and the PLEK2‐related co‐expressed genes were mainly involved in the focal adhesion pathway. The top 10 hub genes were primarily enriched in focal adhesion, HPV infection, ECM‐receptor interaction, and PI3K‐AKT signaling pathway, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition pathway was activated. Furthermore, the expression levels of the hub genes were associated with sensitivity and resistance to various small molecules and anti‐cancer drugs. Further study suggested that ITGA3 and PLEK2 might be viewed as inextricably linked in facilitating HNSCC metastasis. Conclusions In general, PLEK2 might serve as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of HNSCC and guide the development of targeted therapies for HNSCC.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial disease that affects the entire joint, often resulting in severe pain, disability, psychological distress, and a lower quality of life. Patient self-management is emphasized in OA clinical recommendations. Currently, the clinical treatment of OA mainly focuses on pain relief and the improvement of joint function, with few options for regenerating degenerative cartilage or slowing the progression of OA. Therefore, we first reviewed the current treatment of OA, and then summarized the research advances of nanotechnology in OA treatment, including nano drug delivery systems for small molecule drugs, nucleic acids and proteins, nano-scaffolds for cartilage regeneration, and nanoparticle lubricants. Finally, we discussed the opportunities and potential challenges of nanotechnology in OA treatment.

Abstract In order to concentrate the frequency spectrum of the output voltage and improve the quality of grid currents for the three‐level neutral point clamped inverter with the model predictive control, this paper proposes an optimal switching sequence model predictive control algorithm. Based on the increments of grid currents and the neutral‐point voltage, the predictive model of the inverter is established in αβ frame. Moreover, including grid currents and the neutral point voltage tracking, the cost function is designed and simplified by arranging the voltage vector sequence in a sampling cycle appropriately. Meanwhile, the calculation of the optimal dwell time for each voltage vector sequence is derived by Lagrange multiplier method, and its solving process is simplified to reduce online computations. Furthermore, according to different voltage vector sectors, a voltage vector sequence preselection principle is introduced in this paper, besides, considering redundant small vectors in a pair have opposite affections on the neutral point voltage, the amount of voltage vector sequence that needs to be verified is further cut down, for obtaining the optimal voltage vector sequence. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed method can concentrate the output frequency spectrums, which maintains a good quality of grid currents with a small neutral‐point voltage fluctuation.

The Fourier-based gradient field integration method can efficiently reconstruct transparent surfaces from the measured gradient data in the Shape-from-polarization method. However, for the differentiation operator having large truncation errors and lacking constraints on adjacent heights, it will increase the reconstructing error of the Fourier-based integration method. This paper presents an accurate Fourier-based integration approach to improve the reconstruction accuracy, in which a new differentiation operator is derived by limiting the truncation error and increasing heights and slopes in the operator. In order to modify the data obtained by the new operator to meet the requirements of both periodicity and size for the use of the discrete Fourier transform, we propose a method to extend the raw gradient data by first performing antisymmetric extension and then performing periodic extension. A series of simulations and experiments have been developed to verify the performance of the proposed method. By comparing the approach of this paper with other Fourier-based approaches, including Frankot-Chellappa, Southwell-FT and Simpson-FT, both of the simulation and experiment results show that the proposed Fourier-based integration method performs a higher accuracy than other approaches. In the reconstruction experiment, the reconstruction error can be reduced from 0.065 ~ 0.081 mm to 0.020 mm for the spherical surface, and from 0.060 ~ 0.12 mm to 0.016 mm for the free-form surface.

Under weak grid conditions, the variation of the grid impedance will affect the steady-state and dynamic performance of the LCL-filtered grid-connected inverter and even make the inverter unstable. To ensure the system stability and further improve the dynamic performance in a weak grid, a control parameter design method with multi-constrains considering the system bandwidth for the current controller and active damping is proposed in this paper. First, based on the current controller and active damping with only grid current feedback, the effects of control parameters and grid impedance on the LCL resonant suppression and the performance of the inverter are analyzed. Moreover, the parameter constraints of the controllers are derived considering the grid impedance, including stability, resonance suppression, and margin constraints. Furthermore, as the system bandwidth affects the dynamic performance of the inverter, combined with the obtained multi-constraints, the optimal control parameters are determined by achieving the maximum bandwidth of the system against the impedance variation. Compared with other two methods, when the proposed method is applied, the system can operate with a better dynamic and steady-state performance. Finally, experiments are performed on a 2 kW three-phase grid-connected inverter in the weak grid, which verify the effectiveness of the parameter design method proposed in this paper.

Purpose To investigate the mechanism of miR-148a-3p regulating the proliferation and migration of bladder tumor cells. Materials and Methods We conducted a preliminary study to detect the relative expression of miR-148a-3p in bladder cancer and para-cancerous tissue samples. Three bladder tumor cell lines, T24, 5,637 and UM-UC-3, were selected. The expression levels of miR-148a-3p were artificially regulated with miR-148a-3p mimics and the miR-148a-3p inhibitor. The relative expression levels of miR-148a-3p in the samples of each cell line were determined. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) was used to detect cell proliferation, while the effect of the miR-148a-3p mimics and inhibitor on tumor cell migration was detected by wound healing assay. Flow cytometry assay was carried out to explore the effect of miR-148a-3p on cell apoptosis. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was performed in order to verify miR-148a-3p’s target gene. The expressions of ROCK-1 and Bcl-2 were analyzed by western blot. Results The relative expression of miR-148a-3p in tumor and adjacent tissues was assessed with qRT-PCR (P < 0.05) and found to be significantly lower in the tumor tissues than the adjacent tissues. The data obtained from the CCK-8 and wound healing assay showed that intracellular transfection of miR-148a-3p mimics could inhibit cell proliferation and migration, while the miR-148a-3p inhibitor promoted them. Overexpression of miR-148a-3p promoted cell apoptosis in the T24 and 5,637 cell lines. The dual-luciferase reporter assay verified that ROCK-1 is a direct target of miR-148a-3p. Western blot showed that miR-148a-3p overexpression downregulated the expression of ROCK-1 and Bcl-2, while miR-148a-3p knockdown upregulated the expression of ROCK-1 and Bcl-2. Conclusions We confirmed that miR-148a-3p was significantly decreased in bladder cancer cells. miR-148a-3p overexpression inhibited bladder cancer cell proliferation and migration, whereas miR-148a-3p knockdown promoted bladder cancer cell proliferation and migration. Moreover, we found that ROCK-1 was a downstream target of miR-148a-3p. We also found that miR-148a-3p induced cell apoptosis by regulating the expression of Bcl-2. However, the deeper mechanism of this regulatory relationship needs further study.

To explore the influence of complex terrain on wind characteristics of the surface layer and to better develop and utilize wind energy resources of high-altitude regions in central and western China, two typical topographies: the Qiaodi Village in Sichuan (in western China, site 1) and the Nanhua Mountain in Shanxi (in central China, site 2), were selected for this study. The diurnal and monthly variations of the atmospheric stability were contrasted at the two sites, according to the Obukhov length calculated by the eddy covariance data. The energy exchange process between complex underlying surfaces and the atmospheric boundary layer can be reflected to a certain extent by investigating the diurnal variation differences of the turbulent fluxes at the two sites. The results show that: (1) the dominant boundary layer at site 1 during nighttime is the neutral boundary layer, while at site 2 it is the stable; (2) the horizontal wind speed at 10 m above the ground is the highest (lowest) in the neutral (unstable) boundary layer at site 1, while it is the highest (lowest) in the neutral and weak-unstable (stable) boundary layer at site 2, and (3) the momentum flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux all show unimodal diurnal characteristics. There is a 1 h lag in the flux peak at site 1 compared to site 2.

Because of their compact structure, ease of processing and higher heat transfer coefficient, curved-tube heat exchangers are widely applied in various industry applications, such as nuclear power systems, solar-powered engineering, aircraft engine cooling systems and refrigeration and cryogenic systems. Accurate knowledge about the heat transfer characteristics of the supercritical fluids in the tube is critical to the design and optimization of a curved-tube heat exchanger. The available literature indicates that the flow of supercritical fluids flowing in curved tubes affected by the dual effects of the buoyancy force and centrifugal force is more complex compared to straight tubes. Therefore, to obtain insight into their unique characteristics and further research progress, this paper presents a comprehensive review of available experimental and numerical research works on fluids at supercritical pressure flowing in curved tubes. Overall, the secondary flow caused by the curvature enhances the heat transfer and delays the heat transfer deterioration, but it also causes a non-uniform heat transfer distribution along the circumferential direction, and the strengthening performance of the curved tube is damaged. Compared with the more mature theories regarding straight tubes, the flow structure, the coupling mechanism of buoyancy and centrifugal force, and the general heat transfer correlation of supercritical fluids in a curved tube still urgently need to be further studied. Most importantly, studies on the suppression of heat transfer oscillations and heat transfer inhomogeneities specific to curved tubes are scarce. Considering the current status and shortcomings of existing studies, some study topics for supercritical fluids in a curved tube are proposed.

Abstract Purpose To define the clinical characteristics and prognostic value of pre‐retreatment plasma Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) DNA, we investigated EBV status in locoregional recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (lrNPC) patients. Methods Between April 2008 and August 2016, the data of patients with nonmetastatic lrNPC were retrospectively reviewed. The survival indexes of patients between different pre‐retreatment EBV status groups were compared. Results A total of 401 patients with nonmetastatic lrNPC were enrolled, and 197 (49.1%) patients had detectable pre‐retreatment plasma EBV DNA. Treatment included radiotherapy alone (n = 37 patients), surgery alone (n = 105), radiotherapy (n = 208), surgery combined with radiotherapy (n = 20), chemotherapy and targeted therapy (n = 31). Median follow‐up was 32 months. The 3‐year locoregional relapse‐free survival (LRRFS), distant metastasis‐free survival (DMFS), and overall survival (OS) rates for the entire cohort were 64.8%, 89.4%, and 58.8%, respectively. The estimated 3‐year LRRFS, DMFS, and OS rates for the pre EBV‐positive group vs the pre EBV‐negative group were 54.2% vs 75.0% (P 0.05). A distorted checkerboard image affects the precision of omnidirectional camera calibration because of the inaccurate localization of the feature points. To solve this problem, an iterative refinement method is presented. First, the initial parameters are obtained using the traditional calibration method, and the distorted checkerboard is transformed to a distortion-free plane by the projection model that is estimated by initial parameters. Then, the feature point coordinates of the corrected image are extracted. The calibration parameters are recomputed using the refinement of new point locations until the camera parameters converge. This iterative refinement method improves the localization accuracy of feature points and, consequently, of camera calibration. The correctness and effectiveness of the method are verified by a series of simulations and physical experiments. The experiments show that the reprojection errors of feature points are reduced by 39% compared to traditional methods.

PurposeTo explore the feasibility of contralateral lower neck sparing radiotherapy for patients with stage N1 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by analyzing long-term survival outcomes and late toxicities.MethodsData of patients with stage N1 NPC who were treated with contralateral lower neck sparing radiotherapy between January 2013 and December 2015 were analyzed. These patients were all staged by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and all received irradiation to the upper neck (levels II, III, and Va) bilaterally along with ipsilateral levels IV and Vb, without irradiation of the contralateral lower neck. Treatment outcomes, regional failure patterns, and late toxicities were examined.ResultsA total of 275 eligible patients with stage N1 NPC were included in the present study. The median follow-up period was 62 months (range, 3–93 months). The 5-year overall survival (OS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), regional recurrence-free survival (RRFS), locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRRFS), and progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 90.5, 91.3, 94.7, 95.3, 91.2, and 81.7%, respectively. A total of 13 patients (4.7%) developed regional recurrence, all of which occurred in the field and not out of the field. Among 254 patients with available data on late toxicities, the most common late toxicity was xerostomia. No late injuries occurred in the carotid arteries, brachial plexus, or spinal cord. In addition to one case (0.4%) of neck fibrosis and three cases (1.2%) of hearing loss, there were no other grade 3–4 late toxicities observed.ConclusionsContralateral lower neck sparing radiotherapy would be safe and feasible for patients with stage N1 NPC, with the potential to improve the long-term quality of life of patients.

PurposeTo assess the impact of comorbidity on treatment outcomes in patients with locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (lrNPC) using intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and to develop a nomogram that combines prognostic factors to predict clinical outcome and guide individual treatment.MethodsThis was a retrospective analysis of patients with lrNPC who were reirradiated with IMRT between 2003 and 2014. Comorbidity was evaluated by Adult Comorbidity Evaluation-27 grading (ACE-27). The significant prognostic factors (P < 0.05) by multivariate analysis using the Cox regression model were adopted into the nomogram model. Harrell concordance index (C-index) calibration curves were applied to assess this model.ResultsBetween 2003 and 2014, 469 lrNPC patients treated in our institution were enrolled. Significant comorbidity (moderate or severe grade) was present in 17.1% of patients by ACE-27. Patients with no or mild comorbidity had a 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 36.2 versus 20.0% among those with comorbidity of moderate or severe grade (P < 0.0001). The chemotherapy used was not significantly different in patients with lrNPC (P > 0.05). For the rT3–4 patients, the 5-year OS rate in the chemotherapy + radiation therapy (RT) group was 30.0 versus 16.7% for RT only (P = 0.005). The rT3–4 patients with no or mild comorbidity were associated with a higher 5-year OS rate in the chemotherapy + RT group than in the RT only group (32.1 and 17.1%, respectively; P=0.003). However, for the rT3–4 patients with a comorbidity (moderate or severe grade), the 5-year OS rate in the chemotherapy + RT group vs. RT alone was not significantly different (15.7 vs. 15.0%, respectively; p > 0.05). Eight independent prognostic factors identified from multivariable analysis were fitted into a nomogram, including comorbidity. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.715. The area under curves (AUCs) for the prediction of 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival were 0.770, 0.764, and 0.780, respectively.ConclusionComorbidity is among eight important prognostic factors for patients undergoing reirradiation. We developed a nomogram for lrNPC patients to predict the probability of death after reirradiation and guide individualized management.

BACKGROUND Coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with cancer. The role of inflammation in the association of CAD with cancer remains unclear. The study investigated whether inflammation could impact the relationship between CAD and lung cancer. METHODS The study involved 96 newly diagnosed lung cancer patients without receiving anti-cancer therapy and 288 matched non-cancer patients. All the patients underwent coronary angiography and were free from previous percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting. SYNTAX score (SXscore) were used to assess severity of CAD. High SXscore (SXhigh) grade was defined as SXscore > 16 (highest quartile). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) served as an inflammatory biomarker. NLR-high grade referred to NLR > 2.221 (median). RESULTS Among 384 study patients, 380 patients (98.96%) had NLR value (median: 2.221, interquartile range: 1.637-3.040). Compared to non-cancer patients, lung cancer patients had higher rate of SXhigh among total study patients (P = 0.014) and among patients with NLR-high (P = 0.006), but had not significantly higher rate of SXhigh among patients with NLR-low (P = 0.839). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that SXhigh was associated with lung cancer [odds ratio (OR) = 1.834, 95% CI: 1.063-3.162, P = 0.029]. Subgroup analysis showed that SXhigh was associated with lung cancer among patients with NLR-high (OR = 2.801, 95% CI: 1.355-5.794, P = 0.005), however, the association between SXhigh and lung cancer was not significant among patients with NLR-low (OR = 0.897, 95% CI: 0.346-2.232, P = 0.823). CONCLUSIONS Inflammation could lead different association between anatomical severity of CAD and lung cancer. Severity of CAD was significantly associated with increased risk of lung cancer among patients with high inflammation rather than among patients with low inflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fracture-density evaluation has always been challenging for the petroleum industry, although it is a required characteristic for reliable reservoir characterization. Production can be directly controlled by fracture density, especially in tight reservoirs. Previous publications showed that use of high thermal neutron-capture cross-sectional (HTNCC) contrast agents can enhance the sensitivity of neutron logs to the presence of fractures. However, all these studies focus on locating the proppants. In this paper, we introduce a method of injecting electrically transported charged boron carbide (B4C) contrast agents to naturally fractured formations to enhance the propagation of the contrast agents into the secondaryfracture (natural and induced) network by use of an externally applied electric field and to characterize the fracture density in the unpropped region by use of the enhanced neutron porosity logs. We perform numerical simulations to validate the feasibility of the proposed technique. A physical model derived from electrophoretic velocity and material-balance formulations is proposed and solved to simulate the spatial distribution of contrast agents. Furthermore, we simulate neutron porosity logs by solving the neutron-diffusion equation, which allows a fast analysis for the proposed technique. The simulation results confirmed that an external electric field can significantly enhance the transport of charged contrast agents into the secondary-fracture network. Sensitivity analysis revealed that increasing particle f-potential can efficiently decrease the transport time. Furthermore, we applied the introduced technique on synthetic cases with variable secondary-fracture density ranging from 1 to 8%. The relative variation in the simulated neutron porosity before and after applying the electric potential field was up to 50% in a formation with 8% fracture density after applying an electric field for 6 hours. The proposed technique can potentially enable application of neutron porosity logs in fracture characterization, including assessment of secondary-fracture density, if combined with other well logs. Novel Si@double-shelled carbon (Si@DC) yolk-like powders have been fabricated by using the reinvented Si@void@mesoporous silica nanostructures as templates for the first time. The fabrication is quite economical without special equipment and using cheap glucose as the carbon source. In this special architecture, commercial Si nanoparticles are completely sealed inside the ultrathin and intact double-shelled carbon with rationally designed void spaces between the cores and shells, which can accommodate the volume fluctuation of Si cores. When tested as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). the resulting Si@DC yolk-like powders exhibit outstanding cycling stability and enhanced lithium storage capacity. Coarse aqueous sprays of the polymer, poly-α,β-[N(2-hydroxy ethyl)-D,L-aspartamide], (PHEA), containing a covalently bound fluorophore, ethyl carbonyl-6-aminofluorescein, were administered in doses ranging 2.2 through 3.6 mg to the airways of the isolated rat lung (IPRL). The polymer was characterized with number and weight averaged molecular weights of 5300 and 8600 Daltons, respectively. Transfer to the perfusate supplying the pul monary circulation was monitored with time in order to assess the polymer's systemic absorption potential and the transferred molecular weight distribu tions (MWD). The polymer was absorbed at an apparently constant rate during each experiment. The MWD of absorbed material was characterized by gel permeation chromatography and found to be shifted toward lower molecular weights when compared to that of the administered polymer. Two hours after dosing, absorbed material had mean values for weight mean molecular weight, Mw = 6670 ± 526 Daltons and number mean molecular weight, Mn = 4680 ± 640 Daltons where the ranges are standard deviations in 8 IPRL prep arations. PHEA was not metabolized in the 3 h duration of an experiment and there was some tendency for the median molecular weight of the absorbed material to increase with time after administration. We investigate the mechanisms of opening-mode fracture initiation in granular media. The study is based on a simulation of grain-scale fluid-grain interactions through a coupled numerical approach in which the discrete element method is used to solve for the mechanics of a solid granular medium, and computational fluid dynamics is used to model fluid flow and drag forces. We present benchmark problems with analytical solutions and validate this numerical model against experiments on a viscous-drag-driven cavity in the literature. Additional simulation results show fracture initiation mechanisms in a random granular packing subjected to constant boundary stresses and to fluid injection with a localized source. The dimensionless variable Fs/Fsk (ratio of seepage force Fs and skeletal force Fsk) incorporates the impacts of physical properties and injection parameters including fluid viscosity, injection velocity, grain size, and effective stresses, and it has been used as a criterion separating regimes of fluid invasion and drag-driven fracture opening. Our simulation results show that Fs/Fsk in combination with τ1 (ratio of diffusion time from hydromechanical coupling and injection time) serves as a prediction of fracture opening within granular packing. We suggest a simple criterion (Fs/Fsk>1 or τ1>0.17) that is valid for various types of granular media and injection conditions to determine if fracture opening will occur. The granite collected from the Yinshan Mountain and kaolinite has been selected for the leaching and adsorption experiment, respectively, aiming to clarify the enrichment processes of Li and Ga during the deposition. Results suggest both Li and Ga could be leached out from granite by using different acid solutions of different pH and kaolinite can adsorb Li and Ga with varying degrees. Lithium and Ga had the highest leaching ratio when pH = 1. Special geological events (e.g. volcanic eruptions and wildfires), which could result in very low pH values of water in peatland, may have accelerated the release of Li and Ga from the source rocks. Kaolinite has the highest adsorption fraction was obtained at pH = 8. The different characteristics of Li and Ga displayed in the leaching and adsorption experiments probably result from the different occurrences and enrichment processes of Li and Ga in the coals. Lithium was probably enriched before the Li carriers (e.g. kaolinite) had been transported into paleomires because of its high leaching ratio and high adsorption fraction under neutral and alkaline conditions, whereas Ga was more likely concentrated by kaolinite and other carriers after it had been transported into the peat mires.© 2022 China Geology Editorial Office.

To understand the geochemical characteristics of the No.9 coal in the Daheng Mine of the Ningwu coalfield, the trace element analysis was conducted through X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The sedimentary environment was discussed according to the element geochemical parameters. The results show that Li, Ga, Hf, Zr, Nb, Th, and Ta are slightly enriched in the No. 9 coal of Daheng Mine. The average value of the rare earth elements and yttrium (∑REY) in coal here is 144.20 μg/g (excluding parting), which is higher than the average value of ∑REY in the world ’s coal and China ’s coal. The light rare earth elements (LREY) are enriched. The content of Eu was 0.12–2.10 μg/g with an average of 0.57 μg/g, and the Eu is obviously negatively abnormal. Most of the trace elements in the coal are positively correlated with the ash content, which shows that the occurrence of these trace elements is related to inorganic minerals. The results of sequential chemical extraction experiments show that rare earth elements mainly exist in coal in the form of aluminosilicate. The value of the Sr/Ba and the content of S reflect that the coal-forming environment was influenced by seawater. The values of V/Cr and Ni/Co reflect that the peat swamp is in an anaerobic environment and a strongly reducing environment during the coal-forming period.

Abstract Background To investigate whether the administration of hydrogen/oxygen mixture was superior to oxygen in improving symptoms in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Methods This prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial in 10 centres enrolled patient with AECOPD and a Breathlessness, Cough, and Sputum Scale (BCSS) score of at least 6 points. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to receive either hydrogen/oxygen mixture or oxygen therapy. Primary endpoint was the change from baseline in BCSS score at day 7. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded to evaluate safety. Results Change of BCSS score in Hydrogen/oxygen group was larger than that in Oxygen group (− 5.3 vs. − 2.4 point; difference: − 2.75 [95% CI − 3.27 to − 2.22], meeting criteria for superiority). Similar results were observed in other time points from day 2 through day 6. Abstract This study aims to investigate the value of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) for paraquat (PQ)-induced apoptosis in human lung epithelial-like A549 cells and the specific mechanism. A549 cell apoptosis were induced by PQ. These cells were divided into six groups: control group (cells were cultured in RPMI-1640 medium); SP600125 group (cells were preconditioned with SP600125); SB203580 group (cells were preconditioned with SB203580); PQ group (cells were treated with PQ); SP600125+PQ group (cells were preconditioned with SP600125 following PQ); SB203580+PQ group (cells were preconditioned with SB203580 following PQ). The cell survival rate, apoptosis rate, and activities of caspase-3 and -9 were detected. When compared with the control group, both SP600125 and SB203580 groups had no significant difference in the detected indicators. When compared with PQ group, the cells in both SP600125+PQ group and SB203580+PQ group had significantly increased viability and level of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2; and had decreased apoptotic rates, decreased levels of caspase-3 and -9, and decreased level of pro-apoptotic protein Bax. The ratio of p-JNK/JNK protein expression in the SP600125+PQ group significantly decreased, while the ratio of the p-P38/P38 protein expression in the SB203580+PQ group decreased. PQ induced A549 cell apoptosis through the MAPKs pathway.
