Waterjet-assisted laser direct inscription (WJALDI) technology has presented a positive effect to alleviate the thermal damage in workpieces caused by laser ablation. This research pays attention to the effect of aqueous media on the microstructure evolution and phase composition of materials during laser ablation, and few relevant researches have been reported. In this work, titanium alloy (TC11) was applied to fabricate microgrooves utilizing WJALDI and laser direct inscription in the air (LDI). The interaction effects between the laser, water, and the material within a complete ablation cycle were analyzed in depth. The geometry and thermal damage region were observed and discussed to prove the machining performance. The microstructure evolution that happened on and underneath the microgroove surface was also studied. The results revealed that the effect of cooling and impacting significantly reduced the accumulation of debris and molten metal, and better processing quality was obtained in WJALDI. According to the analysis of electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), the grain refinement of the inner material was alleviated, low-angle grain boundaries with the features of uniform distribution were generated, and the adjacent grains of α phase have small kernel average misorientation. In addition, compared with LDI, WJALDI offered a wide microgroove with a small size of heat affected zone (HAZ) and thin thickness of the recast layer, while less depth. Therefore, the developed technology in this work could be a promising approach for the micromachining of titanium alloy or even other difficult-to-cut materials with high quality.

Abstract Droplet manipulation techniques such as transport and merging have been widely used in many fields including biology, chemistry, material and energy applications. Moreover, droplet manipulation strategies have been extensively investigated and reviewed in terms of droplet placement on solid surfaces. However, less attention has been paid to the practice of droplet manipulation technology in other environments, limiting our understanding and the broadening of technology application. In this article, we provided an overview of the recent progress in controlling droplets in various situations, including droplet manipulation on a surface mediated by the passive strategy (Laplace pressure and wettability gradients) and active strategy (electric field, magnetic field, light and heat). We also presented the principle of droplet manipulation and detailed the application of bionic surfaces in droplet manipulation, and the applications and prospects of droplet manipulation technology were summarized.

Bio-inspired macrostructure array (MAA, size: submillimeter to millimeter scale) materials with special wettability (MAAMs-SW) have attracted significant research attention due to their outstanding performance in many applications, including oil repellency, liquid/droplet manipulation, anti-icing, heat transfer, water collection, and oil–water separation. In this review, we focus on recent developments in the theory, design, fabrication, and application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW. We first review the history of the basic theory of special wettability and discuss representative structures and corresponding functions of some biological surfaces, thus setting the stage for the design and fabrication of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW. We then summarize the fabrication methods of special wetting MAAs in terms of three categories: additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and formative manufacturing, as well as their diverse functional applications, providing insights into the development of these MAAMs-SW. Finally, the challenges and directions of future research on bio-inspired MAAMs-SW are briefly addressed. Worldwide efforts, progress, and breakthroughs from surface engineering to functional applications elaborated herein will promote the practical application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.

Many biological surfaces with the multi-scale microstructure show obvious anisotropic wetting characteristics, which have many potential applications in microfluidic systems, biomedicine, and biological excitation systems. However, it is still a challenge to accurately prepare a metal microstructured surface with multidirectional anisotropy using a simple but effective method. In this paper, inspired by the microstructures of rice leaves and butterfly wings, wire electrical discharge machining was used to build dual-level (submillimeter/micrometer) periodic groove structures on the surface of titanium alloy, and then a nanometer structure was obtained after alkali-hydrothermal reaction, forming a three-level (submillimeter/micrometer/nanometer) structure. The surface shows the obvious difference of bidirectional superhydrophobic and tridirectional anisotropic sliding after modification, and the special wettability is easily adjusted by changing the spacing and angle of the inclined groove. In addition, the results indicate that the ability of water droplets to spread along parallel and perpendicular directions on the submillimeter groove structure and the different resistances generated by the inclined groove surface are the main reasons for the multi-anisotropic wettability. The research gives insights into the potential applications of metal materials with multidirectional anisotropic wetting properties.

In this work, the localized electrochemical micro additive manufacturing technology based on the FluidFM (fluidic force microscope) has been introduced to fabricate micro three-dimensional overhang metal structures at sub-micron resolution. It breaks through the localized deposition previously achieved by micro-anode precision movement, and the micro-injection of the electrolyte is achieved in a stable electric field distribution. The structure of electrochemical facilities has been designed and optimized. More importantly, the local electrochemical deposition process has been analyzed with positive source diffusion, and the mathematical modeling has been revealed in the particle conversion process. A mathematical model is proposed for the species flux under the action of pulsed pressure in an innovatively localized liquid feeding process. Besides, the linear structure, bulk structure, complex structure, and large-area structure of the additive manufacturing are analyzed separately. The experimental diameter of the deposited cylinder structure is linearly fitted. The aspect ratio of the structure is greater than 20, the surface roughness value is between 0.1–0.2 μm at the surface of bulk structures, and the abilities are verified for deposition of overhang, hollow complex structures. Moreover, this work verifies the feasibility of 3D overhang array submicron structure additive manufacturing, with the application of pulsed pressure. Furthermore, this technology opens new avenues for the direct fabrication of nano circuit interconnection, tiny sensors, and micro antennas.

Reducing the contact time of a water droplet on non-wetting surfaces has great potential in the areas of self-cleaning and anti-icing, and gradually develops into a hot issue in the field of wettability surfaces. However, the existing literature on dynamic behavior of water drops impacting on superhydrophobic surfaces with various structural shapes is insufficient. Inspired by the microstructure of lotus leaf and rice leaf, dual-level and three-level structures on plane and convex surfaces were successfully fabricated by wire electrical discharge machining on aluminum alloy. After spraying hydrophobic nanoparticles on the surfaces, the plane and convex surfaces with dual-level and three-level structures showed good superhydrophobic property. Bouncing dynamics of impact droplets on the superhydrophobic surfaces wereinvestigated, and the results indicated that the contact time of plane superhydrophobic surface with a three-level structure was minimal, which is 60.4% less than the plane superhydrophobic surface with dual-level structure. The effect of the interval S, width D, and height H of the structure on the plane superhydrophobic surface with three-level structure on contact time was evaluated to obtain the best structural parameters for reducing contact time. This research is believed to guide the direction of the structural design of the droplet impinging on solid surfaces.

Materials with special wettability have drawn considerable attention especially in the practical application for the separation and recovery of the oily wastewater, whereas there still remain challenges of the high-cost materials, significant time, and complicated production equipment. Here, a simple method to fabricate the underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic brass mesh via the nanosecond laser ablation is reported for the first time, which provided the micro-/nanoscale hierarchical structures. This mesh is superhydrophilic and superoleophilic in air but superoleophobic under water and superhydrophobic under oil. On the basis of the special wettability of the as-fabricated mesh, we demonstrate a proof of the light or heavy oil/water separation, and the excellent separation efficiencies (>96%) and the superior water/oil breakthrough pressure coupled with the high water/oil flux are achieved. Moreover, the nanosecond laser technique is simple and economical, and it is advisable for the large-area and mass fabrication of the underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic mesh in the large-scale oil/water separation. In this work, the reaction films were generated on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by means of high-speed wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM-HS) technology in order to improve its microhardness and corrosion resistance. The microhardness was evaluated by using a nanoindentation tester. The corrosion behaviour was studied using measurements of potentiodynamic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that the processed alloys presented a higher microhardness than the matrix, and the thicker film on the surface had a greater microhardness. Additionally, the corrosion resistances of the processed alloys were superior, which could have been due to the lower corrosion current densities and the higher impedance values. Furthermore, the corrosion current densities of the processed alloys would decrease with thicker reaction films. Previous studies have shown that silymarin protects against various types of drug-induced liver injury, but whether the protective mechanism of silymarin against acetaminophen-induced liver injury is related to the CYP2E1 enzyme remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of silymarin on the activity and expression of CYP2E1 in vitro and in vivo. The results of in vitro studies showed that silymarin not only inhibited the activity of CYP2E1 in human and rat liver microsomes but also reduced the expression of CYP2E1 in HepG2 cells. In vivo studies showed that silymarin pretreatment significantly reduced the conversion of chlorzoxazone to its metabolite 6-OH-CLX and significantly increased the t1/2, area under the curve (AUC) and mean residence time (MRT) of chlorzoxazone. In addition, silymarin pretreatment significantly inhibited the upregulation of Cyp2e1 expression, reduced the production of 3-cysteinylacetaminophen trifluoroacetic acid salt (APAP-CYS), and restored the liver glutathione level. The results of our study show that silymarin plays an important protective role in the early stage of acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury by reducing the activity and expression of CYP2E1, reducing the generation of toxic metabolites, and alleviating liver injury.

Superamphiphobic (both superhydrophobic and superoleophobic) surfaces on Al substrates are fabricated by the high speed wire electrical discharge machining (HS-WEDM) and chemical etching technology. The surface morphology, chemical composition and wettability of the sample surfaces are investigated using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray diffraction system and optical contact angle (CA) measurements. The results show that, after the HS-WEDM and chemical etching, the micrometer-scale craters and nanometerscale acicular structures are present on the sample surfaces. The obtained sample surfaces show superamphiphobicity after fluorination. The CAs of water, ethylene glycol and peanut oil are 155.9°, 153.1° and 151.7°, respectively. The sliding angles of water, ethylene glycol and peanut oil are 2°, 3.5° and 5°, respectively. The micro/nanometer-scale rough structures and the low surface energy are essential to fabricate superamphiphobic surfaces. Compared with the other methods, the main advantages of the HS-WEDM and chemical etching technology are simple, safe, highly effective and low cost. In addition, superamphiphobic Al surfaces have potential applications in fields such as self-cleaning, oil capture, oil transportation and anti-smudge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of power tubes on AZ91D magnesium (Mg) alloy was investigated by high-speed wire electrical discharge machine (WEDM-HS). This Letter presented the different surface characteristics and corrosion resistance of the fabricated surface. Chemical composition of the fabricated surface was analysed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and the surface salt water contact angle was also measured in this study. The machined surface evidenced a carbon layer and high hydrophobic property (contact angle between 146° and 150°). The corrosion resistance of the samples machined by the WEDM-HS process was studied in 3.5% NaCl solution through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results have shown that when electrical parameters of the five power tubes were used, the good surface properties of the fabricated surface were obtained with few micropits, and using the higher power tube was helpful to improve the AZ91D corrosion resistance. A handy WEDM-HS technology for treating AZ91D is a useful way to improve the corrosion resistance of the AZ91D Mg alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspired by the anisotropy of the rice leaf surface, high-speed wire electrical discharge machining (HS-WEDM) technology was used to build submillimetre-scale structures on the 304 stainless steel surfaces, and fluorination treatment was applied on the resulting surfaces. The wettability and microstructure of the resulting surfaces were investigated by a large depth 3D scanner, scanning electron microscopy and by the contact angle measuring instrument. The durability of the fabricated surface was evaluated by wear tests. Results show that the V-shaped groove arrays with a hierarchical structure on the processed surfaces are built by HS-WEDM. After the fluorination treatment, the as-machined surfaces show good one-direction superhydrophobicity and the obvious two-direction (the parallel and perpendicular groove directions) anisotropic wettability. The effect of the size of the V-shaped groove on the two-direction anisotropy is discussed. The wear tests show that the one-direction superhydrophobicity and the two-direction anisotropic sliding properties of the stainless steel surfaces are still exhibited after the tests. Fabricating rough surfaces by HS-WEDM is efficient and does not require complex process operation and large area three-dimensional features. This method can realise industrial production.
