Abstract To reduce environmental risks and impacts from orphaned wells (abandoned oil and gas wells), it is essential to first locate and then plug these wells. Manual reading and digitizing of information from historical documents is not feasible, given the large number of wells. Here, we propose a new computational approach for rapidly and cost-effectively characterizing these wells. Specifically, we leverage the advanced capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to extract vital information including well location and depth from historical records of orphaned wells. In this paper, we present an information extraction workflow based on open-source Llama 2 models and test it on a dataset of 160 well documents. The developed workflow achieves an overall accuracy of 100%, accounting for both text conversion and LLM analysis when applied to clean, PDF-based reports. However, it struggles with unstructured image-based well records, where accuracy drops to 70%. The workflow provides significant benefits over manual human digitization, because it reduces labor and increases automation. Additionally, more detailed prompting leads to improved information extraction, and LLMs with more parameters typically perform better. Given that a vast amount of geoscientific information is locked up in old documents, this work demonstrates that recent breakthroughs in LLMs allow us to access and utilize this information more effectively.

ABSTRACT Urease containing nickel cofactor is crucial for urea-hydrolytic induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation (UICP). However, limited information exists regarding the influence of amino acid residues interacting with nickel ions in its structure on induced CaCO3 mineralization. Herein, RT-qPCR was used to demonstrate that the addition of NiCl2 dramatically upregulated the expression of urease structural gene ureC that was correlated with nickel binding in Neobacillus mesonae strain NS-6. Homology modeling and molecular docking were employed to construct the three-dimensional structure of urease and seek the key residues involved in nickel binding process, and virtual mutation technology was adopted to inform three key residues coordinated with nickel ions and urea, His249, His275, and Asp363. Four metrics, including root mean square deviation values for mutations of those key residues in urease-urea complexes severally and wild-type, were calculated by molecular dynamics simulations when they were mutated into alanine, respectively. Subsequently, the mutations of H249A, H275A, and D363A were characterized using western blotting to reveal a decrease in the relative expression and activity of urease, along with a corresponding reduction in CaCO3 precipitation. Ultimately, the mutations also exhibited that they had lower substrate affinity and catalytic efficiency for urea through enzymatic properties analysis. The findings suggested that those residues played a pivotal role in UICP of strain NS-6, which would expand the theoretical basis for modulating urease activity.IMPORTANCEUrease-producing bacterium is of great importance in diverse application fields, such as environmental remediation, due to its key driving characteristics in catalyzing urea hydrolysis via urea-hydrolytic induced CaCO3 precipitation (UICP). As essential cofactors of urease, nickel ions play a crucial role in regulating urease catalysis and maintaining structural stability. Numerous investigations have emphasized the impact of nickel ions on urease activity in recent years, to our best knowledge, only a few literatures have studied the molecular-level regulation of nickel-ligand residues. This study focused on the highly urease-producing bacterial Neobacillus mesonae NS-6 to explore the effects of specific nickel-ligand residues on the urease-aided CaCO3 mineralization process using molecular simulation predictions and targeted mutation experiments. The aim was to provide a molecular-level understanding of the interactive effects between urea and critical residues associated with the urease active center, as well as propose an effective modification strategy to enhance the application of UICP in future environmental areas.

This study aims to analyse the integration of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) in building envelopes globally, focusing on its ability to reduce the energy demand and its economic viability. The study conducted extensive simulations using the DesignBuilder software across 5684 locations globally and utilising artificial intelligence (AI) models to extend the simulation further to 73,515 locations, evaluating the impacts of PCM properties such as melting temperature (MT) and thickness. The main findings indicate that pronounced annual energy savings, 2500 to 3000 kWh, are observed in equatorial regions including northeast Brazil, central Africa, and the Malay Archipelago. Additionally, the optimal utilisation of increased PCM thickness is contingent upon selecting the correct MT and is most effective in regions with high average maximum temperatures, while the most common effective thickness is 20 mm. The study demonstrates that MT significantly affects energy savings, more than PCM thickness, highlighting the importance of selecting appropriate MT based on climatic conditions. The 25 °C MT is most effective within lower latitude range (−15°–30°), averaging 743.2 kWh greater savings than the 21 °C option. The 21 °C MT shows superior performance outside of this range, however the advantage is marginal as the average savings is 251.0 kWh. Economically, regions such as the USA, southern Europe (Spain and Italy), Brazil, and northern Australia show the best viability for PCM integration, aligning energy efficiency improvements with substantial economic returns. This comprehensive analysis suggests that tailored PCM integration strategies are essential for maximising energy savings and advancing sustainable building practices.

Geomechanical assessment using coupled reservoir-geomechanical simulation is becoming increasingly important for analyzing the potential geomechanical risks in subsurface geological developments. However, a robust and efficient geomechanical upscaling technique for heterogeneous geological reservoirs is lacking to advance the applications of three-dimensional (3D) reservoir-scale geomechanical simulation considering detailed geological heterogeneities. Here, we develop convolutional neural network (CNN) proxies that reproduce the anisotropic nonlinear geomechanical response caused by lithological heterogeneity, and compute upscaled geomechanical properties from CNN proxies. The CNN proxies are trained using a large dataset of randomly generated spatially correlated sand-shale realizations as inputs and simulation results of their macroscopic geomechanical response as outputs. The trained CNN models can provide the upscaled shear strength (R2 > 0.949), stress-strain behavior (R2 > 0.925), and volumetric strain changes (R2 > 0.958) that highly agree with the numerical simulation results while saving over two orders of magnitude of computational time. This is a major advantage in computing the upscaled geomechanical properties directly from geological realizations without the need to perform local numerical simulations to obtain the geomechanical response. The proposed CNN proxy-based upscaling technique has the ability to (1) bridge the gap between the fine-scale geocellular models considering geological uncertainties and computationally efficient geomechanical models used to assess the geomechanical risks of large-scale subsurface development, and (2) improve the efficiency of numerical upscaling techniques that rely on local numerical simulations, leading to significantly increased computational time for uncertainty quantification using numerous geological realizations.

Abstract Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on multiple resonance‐thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) have the advantages of high exciton utilization and excellent color purity. However, the large conjugated planarity of general MR‐TADF emitters makes them easily aggregate in the form of π–π stacking, resulting in aggregation‐caused quenching (ACQ) and the formation of excimers, which reduce exciton utilization efficiency and color purity. To address these issues, large shielding units can be incorporated to prevent interchromophore interactions, whereas the majority of reported molecules are limited to blue‐green light emissions. This work proposes a strategy of incorporating steric hindrance groups at different sites of the B/N core to suppress interactions between chromophore, contributing to blue MR‐TADF emitters with high photo‐luminance quantum yields (PLQYs ≥ 95%) and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM), and importantly, great suppression of the ACQ effect. Therefore, blue OLEDs achieve high external quantum efficiencies up to 34.3% and high color purity with FWHM of about 27 nm and CIE around (0.12, 0.15), even at a high doping concentration of 20 wt%.

BackgroundThe global status of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is underestimated, particularly the burden on adolescents and young adults (early-onset, aged 15–39).ObjectiveWe aim to investigate the pattern and trend of early-onset CKD from 1990 to 2019.MethodsWe analyzed age-specific rates of early-onset CKD incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) using Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 data. We examined the global, regional, national, gender-based, age group-based, and temporal changes of early-onset CKD burden from 1990 to 2019, as well as proportional DALY attributions of various risk factors.ResultsFrom 1990 to 2019, the global age-specific incidence rate (per 100,000 population) significantly increased from 25.04 (95% confidence interval 18.51, 31.65) to 32.21 (23.73, 40.81) for early-onset CKD. However, the global age-specific death rate significantly decreased from 2.96 (2.76, 3.15) to 2.86 (2.61, 3.11), and the age-specific DALY rate remained stable. Regarding sociodemographic indexes (SDI), countries with middle SDI had the highest incidence rates and the fastest increasing trends, while those with low and low-middle SDI experienced the highest death and DALY rates. Women had a generally higher age-specific incidence rate than men, whereas men showed higher age-specific death and DALY rates. In addition, the burdens of CKD increased with age among adolescents and young adults. Moreover, the main attributable risk factors for DALY of early-onset CKD were high systolic blood pressure (SBP), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and body mass index (BMI).ConclusionThe age-specific incidence rate of early-onset CKD increased significantly from 1990 to 2019, and the age-specific DALY rate remained stable. High SBP, high FPG, and high BMI were the primary risk factors. Targeted prevention and healthcare measures should be developed considering age, gender, and region.

The transition from fossil fuels to carbon-neutral energy sources is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and combat climate change. Hydrogen (H2) provides a promising path to harness fossil fuels to reduce emissions in sectors such as transportation. However, regional economic analyses of various H2 production techniques are still lacking. We selected a well-known fossil fuel-exporting region, the USA's Intermountain-West (I-WEST), to analyze the carbon intensity of H2 production and demonstrate regional tradeoffs. Currently, 78 % of global H2 production comes from natural gas and coal. Therefore, we considered steam methane reforming (SMR), surface coal gasification (SCG) and underground coal gasification (UCG) as H2 production methods in this work. We developed the cost estimation frameworks of SMR, SCG and UCG with and without carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS). In addition, we identified optimal sites for H2 hubs by considering the proximity to energy sources, energy markets, storage sites and CO2 sequestration sites. We included new production tax credits (PTCs) in the cost estimation to quantify the economic benefit of CCUS. Our results suggest that the UCG has the lowest levelized cost of H2 production due to the elimination of coal production cost. H2 production using the SMR process with 99 % carbon capture is profitable when the PTCs are considered. We also analyzed carbon utilization opportunities where CO2 conversion to formic acid is a promising profitable option. This work quantifies the potential of H2 production from fossil fuels in the I-WEST region, a key parameter for designing energy transition pathways.

The unique properties of graphene have attracted the interest of researchers from various fields, and the discovery of graphene has sparked a revolution in materials science, specifically in the field of two-dimensional materials. However, graphene synthesis’s costly and complex process significantly impairs researchers’ endeavors to explore its properties and structure experimentally. Molecular dynamics simulation is a well-established and useful tool for investigating graphene’s atomic structure and dynamic behavior at the nanoscale without requiring expensive and complex experiments. The accuracy of the molecular dynamics simulation depends on the potential functions. This work assesses the performance of various potential functions available for graphene in mechanical properties prediction. The following two cases are considered: pristine graphene and pre-cracked graphene. The most popular fifteen potentials have been assessed. Our results suggest that diverse potentials are suitable for various applications. REBO and Tersoff potentials are the best for simulating monolayer pristine graphene, and the MEAM and the AIREBO-m potentials are recommended for those with crack defects because of their respective utilization of the electron density and inclusion of the long-range interaction. We recommend the AIREBO-m potential for a general case of classical molecular dynamics study. This work might help to guide the selection of potentials for graphene simulations and the development of further advanced interatomic potentials.

Abstract Background To investigate the impact of radiotherapy (RT) on recurrence and survival in patients with locally advanced upper rectal cancer underwent curative resection. Methods 363 locally advanced upper rectal cancer cases were identified from the database of our hospital from 2010 to 2018. All patients underwent curative resection and had the lower margin of the tumor located 10–15 cm from the anal verge, among them, 69 patients received pre- or post-operative radiotherapy and 294 patients without. Local control and survivals were compared, and stratification grouping based on European Society for Medical Oncology risk factors were further compared. 1:2 propensity score matching analysis was used to reduce the impact of confounding factors. Results There were 207 patients after 1:2 matching (RT group:non-RT group = 69:138). The 5-year overall survival (OS) of the RT group and non-RT group after matching was 84.1% and 80.9%, respectively(P = 0.440); the 5-year local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) was 96.5% and 94.7%, respectively(P = 0.364); the 5-year distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) was 76.8% and 76.9%, respectively(P = 0.531). Subgroup analysis showed that radiotherapy could not significantly improve the overall survival, local recurrence, and distant metastasis with or without poor prognostic features. In the high-risk subgroup, the 5-year OS was 76.9% and 79.6% for patients treated with radiotherapy and without (P = 0.798), LRFS was 94.8% and 94.2%, respectively (P = 0.605), DMFS 68.7% and 74.7%, respectively (P = 0.233). Conclusions Our results suggest that radiotherapy could not improve local control and survival for locally advanced upper rectal cancer patients underwent curative resection, even in the cases with poor prognostic features.

Alumina coating which has excellent corrosion resistance to lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) is very promising to be used in future LBE cooling system. In this paper, the Al2O3/Fe-Al gradient coating is prepared on the surface of SIMP steel assisted by ionic liquid aluminum electroplating and subsequent heat treatments and selective oxidation. The protective Al2O3 layer is composed of much γ-phase and a small amount α-phase. The Fe-Al transition layer is mainly composed of FeAl alloy phase. After being exposed for 600 h to LBE at 600 °C, the coating still maintains intact and dense structure and good compatibility to the substrate, effectively preventing the substrate steel from the corrosion attack of LBE. While obvious LBE attack can be observed in the compared bare steel. Finally, to verify the possibility of this approach preparing Al2O3/Fe-Al coating on complex geometries, we have also successfully prepared this sort of coating on the inner surface of a steel tube, indicating that this coating has a great application potential in the future.

Highlights A comprehensive summary of the representative promising applications of metal halide perovskite materials, including traditional optoelectronic devices (solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, lasers), and cutting-edge technologies in terms of neuromorphic devices (artificial synapses and memristors) and pressure-induced emission. For each application, the fundamentals of the field, the current progress and the remaining challenges are provided, based on the up-to-date works.

Groundwater overexploitation in West Ordos necessitates sustainable irrigation practices. This study evaluated three irrigation levels—W1 (3300 m3 · ha−1), W2 (2850 m3 · ha−1), and W3 (2400 m3 · ha−1)—by modifying the wide-width planting pattern of maize. Additionally, two levels of straw mulch were analyzed: F1 (9000 kg · ha−1) and F2 (no mulch). The study aimed to investigate the effects of these treatments on corn growth dynamics, soil water temperature, soil enzyme activity, yield, grain quality, and water use efficiency. The results indicated a decline in growth indices, enzyme activities, grain quality, and yield under the limited irrigation levels W2 and W3 compared to W1. The highest corn yields were observed with W1F1 (6642.54 kg · ha−1) and W2F1 (6602.38 kg · ha−1), with the latter showing only a 0.6% decrease. Notably, water use efficiency in the W2F1 treatment improved by 4.69%, 12.08%, 10.27%, 12.59%, and 12.96% compared to W1F1, W3F1, W1F2, W2F2, and W3F2, respectively. Straw mulch (F1) significantly elevated the soil temperature, increasing the effective accumulated temperature during the growth period by 10.11~85.79 °C, and boosted the soil enzyme activity by 10–25%. Under limited irrigation, the W2 (2850 m3 · ha−1) and F1 (9000 kg · ha−1 straw) treatments achieved the highest water productivity of 2.48 kg·m−3, maintaining a high yield of 6602.38 kg · ha−1 while preserving nutrients essential to the corn’s quality. This approach presents a viable strategy for wide-width corn planting in groundwater-depleted regions, offering a scientifically grounded and sustainable water management solution for efficient corn production in West Ordos.

Hydrogel-based interfacial solar-driven evaporation (ISDE) gives full play to the highly adjustable physical and chemical properties of hydrogel, which endows ISDE systems with excellent evaporation performance, anti-pollution properties, and mechanical behavior, making it more promising for applications in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. This review systematically introduces the latest advances in hydrogel-based ISDE systems from three aspects: the required properties, the preparation methods, and the role played in application scenarios of hydrogels used in ISDE. Additionally, we also discuss the remaining challenges and potential opportunities in hydrogel-based ISDE systems. By summarizing the latest research progress, we hope that researchers in related fields have some insight into the unique advantages of hydrogels in the ISDE field and contribute our efforts so that ISDE technology reaches the finishing line of practical application on the hydrogel track.

In this study, a highly promising bacterium was isolated from sandstone oil in the Ordos Basin, named strain NS-6 which exhibited exceptional urease production ability and demonstrated superior efficiency in inducing the deposition of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Through morphological and physiochemical characteristics analysis, as well as 16S rRNA sequencing, strain NS-6 was identified as Neobacillus mesonae. The activity of urease and the formation of CaCO3 increased over time, reaching a maximum of 7.9 mmol/L/min and 184 mg (4.60 mg/mL) respectively at 32 h of incubation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed CaCO3 crystals ranging in size from 5 to 6 μm, and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis verified the presence of calcium, carbon, and oxygen within the crystals. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis further confirmed the composition of these CaCO3 crystals as calcite and vaterite. Furthermore, the maximum deposition of CaCO3 by strain NS-6 was achieved using response surface methodology (RSM), amounting to 193.8 mg (4.845 mg/mL) when the concentration of calcium ions was 0.5 mmol/L supplemented with 0.9 mmol/L of urea at pH 8.0. Genome-wide analysis revealed that strain NS-6 possesses a chromosome of 5,736,360 base pairs, containing 5,442 predicted genes, including 3,966 predicted functional genes and 1,476 functionally unknown genes. Genes like ureA, ureB, and ureC related to urea catabolism were identified by gene annotation, indicating that strain NS-6 is a typical urease-producing bacterium and possesses a serial of genes involved in metabolic pathways that mediated the deposition of CaCO3 at genetic level.

Abstract The design of optimal infrastructure is essential for the deployment of commercial and large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. During the design process, it is important to consider CO2 capture and storage locations and CO2 transportation pipelines to minimize the total project cost. SimCCS, first introduced in 2009, is an integrated open-source tool to optimize CCS infrastructure. The core CCS infrastructure design problem in SimCCS is structured as a mixed-integer linear programming problem by selecting the optimal pipeline routes, searching CO2 source capture and storage locations, and determining the corresponding CO2 amounts to meet desired capture targets. Multiple important and practical features have been developed to the latest version of SimCCS, SimCCS 3.0 . One of these features is phase-based modeling which enables users to dynamically design the CCS infrastructure. We demonstrate the phased-based modeling capability using two CCS infrastructure optimization case studies. The results from these case studies reveal that the phase-based modeling capability in SimCCS is particularly useful to optimize the dynamic deployment of CCS projects.

Abstract Background Sex determination occurs across animal species, but most of our knowledge about its mechanisms comes from only a handful of bilaterian taxa. This limits our ability to infer the evolutionary history of sex determination within animals. Results In this study, we generated a linkage map of the genome of the colonial cnidarian Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus and used it to demonstrate that this species has an XX/XY sex determination system. We demonstrate that the X and Y chromosomes have pseudoautosomal and non-recombining regions. We then use the linkage map and a method based on the depth of sequencing coverage to identify genes encoded in the non-recombining region and show that many of them have male gonad-specific expression. In addition, we demonstrate that recombination rates are enhanced in the female genome and that the haploid chromosome number in Hydractinia is n = 15. Conclusions These findings establish Hydractinia as a tractable non-bilaterian model system for the study of sex determination and the evolution of sex chromosomes.

Abstract Severe muscle injury is hard to heal and always results in a poor prognosis. Recent studies found that extracellular vesicle-based therapy has promising prospects for regeneration medicine, however, whether extracellular vesicles have therapeutic effects on severe muscle injury is still unknown. Herein, we extracted apoptotic extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs-ApoEVs) to treat cardiotoxin induced tibialis anterior (TA) injury and found that MSCs-ApoEVs promoted muscles regeneration and increased the proportion of multinucleated cells. Besides that, we also found that apoptosis was synchronized during myoblasts fusion and MSCs-ApoEVs promoted the apoptosis ratio as well as the fusion index of myoblasts. Furthermore, we revealed that MSCs-ApoEVs increased the relative level of creatine during myoblasts fusion, which was released via activated Pannexin 1 channel. Moreover, we also found that activated Pannexin 1 channel was highly expressed on the membrane of myoblasts-derived ApoEVs (Myo-ApoEVs) instead of apoptotic myoblasts, and creatine was the pivotal metabolite involved in myoblasts fusion. Collectively, our findings firstly revealed that MSCs-ApoEVs can promote muscle regeneration and elucidated that the new function of ApoEVs as passing inter-cell messages through releasing metabolites from activated Pannexin 1 channel, which will provide new evidence for extracellular vesicles-based therapy as well as improving the understanding of new functions of extracellular vesicles.

Phase change material (PCM) has gathered much attention in battery thermal management for electric vehicles, in which form-stable PCM is a promising method to reduce the leakage of energy storage material. In this paper, a composite PCM that has form-stable property is used for passive cooling of electric car battery. Three cooling configurations are set up in the gap between two batteries, and their performance is analysed by a numerical model. The results show that integrating composite PCM with forced air convection can maximally prevent battery from heat accumulation at 5C and reduce the core temperature by 15.9 K, while filling the gap with composite PCM can reduce the temperature by 15.7 K. With the discharge rate decreased, forced air convection plays more significant role than PCM in slowing down the rise in battery temperature. The maximum battery temperature reduces when the ratio of PCM thickness to battery width increases from 0 to 0.1, but the maximum temperature is limited to a certain level with thicker PCM. The addition of 4.6 wt% graphite to the composite PCM greatly improved the heat absorption capacity of PCM, and the forced air with 20 m·s-1 velocity has better cooling behaviour than PCM.

Liquid desiccant technology is an energy-efficient substitute for technologies that are conventionally applied for temperature and humidity control; however, innovative desiccant solutions have not been extensively explored in terms of their performance and feasibility. This work aimed to investigate desiccant solutions with moisture sorption analysis technically and economically. Various conditions of temperature and humidity were tested in a climatic chamber and the moisture absorption and desorption capacity, thermo-chemical energy storage capacity, and cost of conventional and innovative desiccant solutions were assessed by experiment. Calcium chloride showed the highest moisture desorption capacity (0.3113 gH2O/gsol in the climatic chamber at 50 °C and 25% RH) and the lowest cost, despite its low moisture absorption capacity. Ionic liquids show high moisture absorption capacity (as high as 0.429 gH2O/gsol in the climatic chamber at 25 °C and 90% RH) and could be used as additives (in which a maximum increase of 84.1% was observed for moisture absorption capacity due to the addition of ionic liquids), and thus, they are promising substitutes for conventional desiccant solutions. As solutions for better performance under various conditions were identified, the study will advance liquid desiccant technology.

With the continuous expansion of the transport network, the safe operation of high-speed railway rails has become a crucial issue. Defect detection on the surface of rails is a key part of ensuring the safe operation of trains. Despite the progress of deep learning techniques in defect detection on the rails’ surface, there are still challenges related to various problems, such as small datasets and the varying scales of defects. Based on this, this paper proposes an improved encoder–decoder architecture based on Swin Transformer network, named Rail-STrans, which is specifically designed for intelligent segmentation of high-speed rail surface defects. The problem of a small and black-and-white rail dataset is solved using self-made large and multiple rail surface defect datasets through field shooting, data labelling, and data expansion. In this paper, two Local Perception Modules (LPMs) are added to the encoding network, which helps to obtain local context information and improve the accuracy of detection. Then, the Multiscale Feature Fusion Module (MFFM) is added to the decoding network, which helps to effectively fuse the feature information of defects at different scales in the decoding process and improves the accuracy of defect detection at multiple scales. Meanwhile, the Spatial Detail Extraction Module (SDEM) is added to the decoding network, which helps to retain the spatial detail information in the decoding process and further improves the detection accuracy of small-scale defects. The experimental results show that the mean accuracy of the semantic segmentation of the method proposed in this paper can reach 90.1%, the mean dice coefficient can reach 89.5%, and the segmentation speed can reach 37.83 FPS, which is higher than other networks’ segmentation accuracy. And, at the same time, it can achieve higher efficiency.

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. Warm WLED with high color rendering index (CRI) are greatly required for the widespread use of solid-state lighting especially indoors. Here, a remarkable improvement of CRI in alloyed CdS0.7Se0.3 QDs was achieved by pressure engineering. Notably, white light with enhanced CRI of 93, higher than pristine CRI of 47, was retained upon the complete release of pressure, accompanied by a color change from ‘natural’ (4298 K) to ‘warm’ white light (2170 K). Synchrotron ADXRD shows that CdS0.7Se0.3 QDs experienced an irreversible phase transition from the zinc blende phase to rocksalt structure.

Crude oil pollution is environmentally ubiquitous and has become a global public concern about its impact on human health. Asphaltenes are the key components of heavy crude oil (HCO) that are underutilized due to their high viscosity and density, and yet, the associated information about biodegradation is extremely limited in the literature. In the present study, an indigenous bacterium with effective asphaltene-degrading activity was isolated from oil shale and identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri by a polyphasic taxonomic approach, named YWX-1. Supplemented with 75 g L−1 heavy crude oil as the sole carbon source for growth in basic mineral salts liquid medium (MSM), strain YWX-1 was able to remove 49% of asphaletene fractions within 14 days, when it was cultivated with an initial inoculation size of 1%. During the degradation process, the bioemulsifier produced by strain YWX-1 could emulsify HCO obviously into particles, as well as it had the ability to solubilize asphaletenes. The bioemulsifier was identified to be a mixture of polysaccharide and protein through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The genome of strain YWX-1 contains one circular chromosome of 4488441 bp with 63.98% GC content and 4145 protein coding genes without any plasmid. Further genome annotation indicated that strain YWX-1 possesses a serial of genes involved in bio-emulsification and asphaltenes biodegradation. This work suggested that P. stutzeri YWX-1 could be a promising species for bioremediation of HCO and its genome analysis provided insight into the molecular basis of asphaltene biodegradation and bioemulsifier production.

Much zinc residue is produced during the traditional processes involved in zinc hydrometallurgy in the leaching stage: its composition is complex and valuable metals are difficult to recover therefrom. If not handled properly, it can lead to a waste of resources and environmental pollution. To solve this problem, zinc leach residue specimens were treated using the carbothermal reduction method (CTR) that is easy to operate and has a high energy utilisation rate. The methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) were used for analytical characterisation. Based on this, this research investigated a structure-function relationship between microstructures and microwave-absorbing properties of ZnO smoke from CTR-treated zinc leach residue. The results demonstrate that microstructures and macro-properties of ZnO smoke obtained at different temperatures differ greatly. Under conditions including a calcination temperature of 1250°C, holding time of 60 min, and addition of 50% and 10% of powdered coal and CaO separately, the ZnO content in the obtained smoke is 99.14%, with regular micron-sized ZnO particles therein. For these particles, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) reached –25.56 dB at a frequency of 15.84 GHz with a matching thickness of 5 mm. Moreover, frequency bandwidth corresponding to RL < –10 dB can reach 2.0 GHz. ZnO smoke obtained using this method is found to have excellent microwave-absorbing performance, which provides a new idea for high-value applications of zinc-rich residue.

The gut microbiota affects many aspects of host biology and plays key roles in the coevolutionary association with its host. Geographical gradients may play a certain role on gut microbiota variation in the natural environment. However, the distribution pattern of amphibian gut microbiota in the latitudinal gradient remains largely unexplored. Here, we sampled six natural populations of Fejervarya limnocharis along the eastern coastline of mainland China (spanning 20°–30° N = 1,300 km) using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to characterize the gut microbiota. First of all, a significant correlation between gut microbial diversity and latitude was observed in our research system. Second, we discovered that latitude influenced the composition of the gut microbiota of F. limnocharis. Finally, we detected that geographical distance could not determine gut microbiota composition in F. limnocharis. These results indicate that latitude can play an important role in shaping the gut microbial diversity of amphibian. Our study offers the first evidence that gut microbial diversity of amphibian presents a latitudinal pattern and highlights the need for increased numbers of individuals to be sampled during microbiome studies in wild populations along environmental gradients.

The use of spherical radial basis functions (SRBFs) in regional gravity field modeling has become popular in recent years. However, to our knowledge, their potential for combining gravity data from multiple sources, particularly for data with different spectrum information in the frequency domain, has not been extensively explored. Therefore, band-limited SRBFs, which have good localization characteristics in the frequency domain, were taken as the main tool in this study. To determine the optimal expansion degree of SRBFs for gravity data, a residual and a priori accuracy comparative analysis method was proposed. Using this methodology, the expansion degrees of terrestrial and airborne data were determined to be 5200 and 1840, respectively, and then a high-resolution geoid model called ColSRBF2023 was constructed for use in Colorado. The results indicated that ColSRBF2023 had a standard deviation (STD) of 2.3 cm with respect to the GSVS17 validation data. This value was 2–6 mm lower than models obtained using different expansion degrees for gravity data and models from other institutions considered in this study. Furthermore, when comparing it with the validation geoid model on a 1′ × 1′ grid, ColSRBF2023 exhibited an STD value of 2.4 cm, which was also the best among the examined models. These findings highlight the importance of determining the optimal expansion degree of gravity data, particularly for constructing high-resolution gravity field models in rugged mountainous areas.

In recent years, significant advances have been made in the exploration of Carboniferous volcanic reservoirs in the Hongche Fault Zone of the Junggar Basin of China, showing good prospects for further exploration. However, the large variation in the physical properties of crude oil and the complex distribution rule inhibit the one-step exploration. In this study, the PM scale of the biodegradation of crude oil and source of crude oil were studied using experimental methods that target the properties, bulk properties and biomarker compounds of crude oil. The exploration potential of crude oil in this area was analysed, and an accumulation model of crude oil was established. Based on the differences in biomarker compounds and the degree of biodegradation, crude oils were divided into four groups and seven subgroups. Additionally, the analysis of the biomarker compounds of crude oil combined with the hydrocarbon-generation history of source rocks showed that there were at least two periods of oil charging in this area. The first period was the late Triassic, with crude oil derived from the P1f source rock. Owing to the strong tectonic activity during the late Indosinian movement, the oil reservoirs were distributed in the footwall of the fault zone, and the oil in the reservoir exhibited different degrees of biodegradation, forming crude oils of subgroup I1, II and III1. The second period was Cretaceous, during which the P1f source rock was in the natural gas generation stage, and the P2w source rock was at a mature stage. A small part of the crude oil formed by the P2w source rock migrated to the Carboniferous reservoirs and mixed with the crude oil formed by the earlier P1f source rock, resulting in crude oils of subgroups I2, III2, and IV2. The crude oil in the studied area originated from the source rocks in the sag during the peak of oil generation. As tectonic activity approached stability in the latter period, it is speculated that there may be well-preserved primary oil and gas reservoirs in the footwall and slope areas of the fault, making these potential exploration sites.

This paper studied the performance of a compressor-assisted thermochemical sorption energy storage (CATSES) system with a solar photovoltaic-thermal collector (PV/T) to support the domestic space and hot water heating. The heat from the PV/T drives endothermic desorption, whilst the electricity from the PV/T powers the compressor to assist the low-temperature desorption. The main aim of this study was to demonstrate that the integrated system can flexibly and maximally utilise solar energy, and store solar energy in a high energy–density system with minimum loss over long-term storage. The parametric investigation on the CATSES system using SrCl2/NH3 working pair was conducted for a case study in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, which has long wintertime with high heating demand. Two different system operation modes (Case 1 and Case 2) with different strategies of solar energy usage (direct usage / storage) were studied. By using 30 m2 PV/T collector with the CATSES reactor that contains 22 m3 (450 kg/m3) composite adsorbent and a compressor with 11.5 compression ratio, the system that operated Case 1 could achieve 100% solar fraction of annual heating demand. The achieved material-based energy storage density was around 0.6 GJ/m3 and the storage efficiency was 0.88 with the net electricity consumption of 180 kWh (around 5% average consumption of an ordinary UK household). The system that operated Case 2 stored less heat than that of the Case 1 but was able to output more electricity.

It is well known that the chitosan (CS) properties such as molecular weight (Mw) and deacetylation degree (DD) are crucial for siRNA delivery. In the present study, we have unintentionally found that the transfection medium has much more substantial effect, which has not been reported before. Specifically, the transfection efficiency was considerably increased in Hank’s Balanced Saline Solution (HBSS), with various Mw (30–150 kD) and DD (85–95%) combinations in different cell types. In addition, even though the CS/siRNA nanoparticles physical parameters such as diameter size and polydisperse index were disturbed by cell culture medium or serum, a relatively high knockdown efficiency could still be obtained in HBSS. Moreover, the highly efficient silencing in HBSS even did not require pre-mixing to formulate the CS/siRNA nanoparticles. In conclusion, our findings have confirmed a neglected but crucial important factor of transfection medium in the chitosan mediated siRNA delivery.

Gut microbial communities of animals play key roles in host evolution, while the relationship between gut microbiota and host evolution in Tibetan birds remains unknown. Herein, we sequenced the gut microbiota of 67 wild birds of seven species dwelling in the Tibetan wetlands. We found an obvious species-specific structure of gut microbiota among these plateau birds whose habitats were overlapped. Different from plateau mammals, there was no strict synergy between the hierarchical tree of gut microbial community and species phylogeny. In brown-headed gulls (Larus brunnicephalus) as an example, the structure of gut microbiota differed in different habitats, and the relative abundance of bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Paracoccus, Lachnospiraceae, and Vibrio, significantly correlated with altitude. Finally, we found various pathogenic bacteria in the birds of these plateau wetlands, and the interspecific differences were related to their diet and living environments.

Aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) is a nanohybrid semiconductor material with a wide bandgap, high electron mobility, and high thermal stability for various applications including high-power electronics and deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes. The quality of thin films greatly affects their performance in applications in electronics and optoelectronics, whereas optimizing the growth conditions for high quality is a great challenge. Herein, we have investigated the process parameters for the growth of AlGaN thin films via molecular dynamics simulations. The effects of annealing temperature, the heating and cooling rate, the number of annealing rounds, and high temperature relaxation on the quality of AlGaN thin films have been examined for two annealing modes: constant temperature annealing and laser thermal annealing. Our results reveal that for the mode of constant temperature annealing, the optimum annealing temperature is much higher than the growth temperature in annealing at the picosecond time scale. The lower heating and cooling rates and multiple-round annealing contribute to the increase in the crystallization of the films. For the mode of laser thermal annealing, similar effects have been observed, except that the bonding process is earlier than the potential energy reduction. The optimum AlGaN thin film is achieved at a thermal annealing temperature of 4600 K and six rounds of annealing. Our atomistic investigation provides atomistic insights and fundamental understanding of the annealing process, which could be beneficial for the growth of AlGaN thin films and their broad applications.

A pneumatic radial piston motor is studied in this paper in order to establish a dynamic modelling and simulation method. As a result of using geometric parameters, the piston cylinder volume change was calculated, and the heat transfer equation, thermodynamic energy balance equation, and motion equation were combined in order to create a complete model of the piston cylinder. With the aid of compressed air, several experimental tests were conducted, and the results of rotational speed with varying inlet pressure were fed into the simulation to determine one of the critical unknown parameters, such as the overall friction coefficient of the system. For the studied piston motor, this coefficient was 0.0625 Nm. Computer simulations can be used to adjust design parameters in order to reach a higher rotation speed by using an accurate model. As a result, better efficiency and performance present several opportunities that would not be possible when running experimental tests in a lab. The mathematical model yielded higher rotational speeds of 50 RPM on average, with an increased piston diameter of 1.775 mm; by increasing the diameter of the cylinder to 25.8 mm, it was possible to achieve faster rotational speeds. The performed precise simulation could be used for further motor design and optimisation, and performance estimates under a broader range of operational conditions. Simulations should be conducted on multiple sets of experimental test results to determine the correct foverall value for each motor. In addition to guiding the design and optimisation of the motor, simulations could also predict its performance under a broader range of operating conditions by utilising effective parameters such as geometrical characteristics, flow conditions, and motion equations.

Purpose: We constructed and characterized knockout and conditional knockout mice for KCNJ13, encoding the inwardly rectifying K+ channel of the Kir superfamily Kir7.1, mutations in which cause both Snowflake Vitreoretinal Degeneration (SVD) and Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) to further elucidate the pathology of this disease and to develop a potential model system for gene therapy trials.Methods: A Kcnj13 knockout mouse line was constructed by inserting a gene trap cassette expressing beta-galactosidase flanked by FRT sites in intron 1 with LoxP sites flanking exon two and converted to a conditional knockout by FLP recombination followed by crossing with C57BL/6J mice having Cre driven by the VMD2 promoter. Lentiviral replacement of Kcnj13 was driven by the EF1a or VMD2 promoters.Results: Blue-Gal expression is evident in E12.5 brain ventricular choroid plexus, lens, neural retina layer, and anterior RPE. In the adult eye expression is seen in the ciliary body, RPE and choroid. Adult conditional Kcnj13 ko mice show loss of photoreceptors in the outer nuclear layer, inner nuclear layer thinning with loss of bipolar cells, and thinning and disruption of the outer plexiform layer, correlating with Cre expression in the overlying RPE which, although preserved, shows morphological disruption. Fundoscopy and OCT show signs of retinal degeneration consistent with the histology, and photopic and scotopic ERGs are decreased in amplitude or extinguished. Lentiviral based replacement of Kcnj13 resulted in increased ERG c- but not a- or b- wave amplitudes.Conclusion: Ocular KCNJ13 expression starts in the choroid, lens, ciliary body, and anterior retina, while later expression centers on the RPE with no/lower expression in the neuroretina. Although KCNJ13 expression is not required for survival of the RPE, it is necessary for RPE maintenance of the photoreceptors, and loss of the photoreceptor, outer plexiform, and outer nuclear layers occur in adult KCNJ13 cKO mice, concomitant with decreased amplitude and eventual extinguishing of the ERG and signs of retinitis pigmentosa on fundoscopy and OCT. Kcnj13 replacement resulting in recovery of the ERG c- but not a- and b-waves is consistent with the degree of photoreceptor degeneration seen on histology.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a frequent malignancy of the urinary system. It has been found that hypoxia mediates the malignant evolvement of RCC. Here, we probe the impact and potential mechanism of HECT domain E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase 2 (HECTD2) and HIF-1α on regulating RCC evolvement. RCC tissues and adjacent normal tissues were collected, and the association between the expression profiles of HECTD2 and HIF-1α and the clinicopathological features was analyzed. Additionally, we constructed HECTD2/HIF-1α overexpression and knockdown models in RCC cell lines to ascertain the impacts of HECTD2 and HIF-1α on RCC cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and growth in vivo. We applied bioinformatics to predict the upstream miRNA targets of HECTD2. Meanwhile, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), and the dual-luciferase reporter assays were employed to clarify the targeting association between HECTD2 and miR-320a. The effect of miR-320a on HECTD2-mediated RCC progression was investigated. The results suggested that both HIF-1α and HECTD2 were up-regulated in RCC (compared with adjacent non-tumor tissues), and they had positive relationship. Moreover, higher level of HECTD2 and HIF-1α is associated with poorer overall survival of RCC patients. HECTD2 overexpression heightened RCC cell proliferation and migration, and weakened cell apoptosis. On the other hand, the malignant phenotypes of RCC cells were signally impeded by HECTD2 or HIF-1α knockdown. Moreover, miR-320a targeted the 3′-untranslated region of HECTD2 and suppressed HECTD2 expression. The rescue experiments showed that miR-320a restrained HECTD2-mediated malignant progression in RCC, while up-regulation of HIF-1α hampered miR-320a expression. Collectively, HIF-1α mediated HECTD2 up-regulation and aggravated RCC progression by attenuating miR-320a.

This study presents a detailed dynamic modelling and generic simulation method of an oscillating diaphragm compressor for chemisorption energy technology applications. The geometric models of the compressor were developed step by step, including the diaphragm movement, compressor dimensions, chamber areas and volumes and so on. The detailed mathematical model representing the geometry and kinematics of the diaphragm compressor was combined with the motion equation, heat transfer equation and energy balance equation to complete the compressor modelling. This combination enables the novel compressor model to simultaneously handle the simulation of momentum and energy balance of the diagram compressor. Furthermore, an experimental apparatus was set up to investigate and validate the present modelling and the simulation method. The performance of the compressor was experimentally evaluated in terms of the mass flow rate of the compressor at various compression ratios. Additionally, the effects of different parameters such as the inlet temperature and ambient temperature at various compressor ratios on the compressor performance were investigated. It was found reducing the inlet temperature from 40 to 5 °C at a constant pressure results in the enhancement of the compressor flow rate up to 14.7%. The compressor model proposed and developed in this study is shown to be not only able to accurately deal with the complexity of the dynamic behaviour of the compressor working flow but is also capable of effectively representing diaphragm compressors for analysis and optimisation purposes in various applications.

Mitochondria are important organelles that play key roles in generating the energy needed for life and in pathways such as apoptosis. Direct targeting of antitumor drugs, such as doxorubicin (DOX), to mitochondria into cells is an effective approach for cancer therapy and inducing cancer cell death. To achieve targeted and effective delivery of antitumor drugs to tumor cells, to enhance the therapeutic effect, and to reduce the side effects during the treatment, we prepared a cationic amphiphilic polymer with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. The polymer could be localized to mitochondria with excellent organelle targeting, and it showed good mitochondrial targeting with low toxicity. The polymer could also self-assemble into doxorubicin-loaded micelles in phosphate buffer, with a particle size of about 4.3 nm, an encapsulation rate of 11.03%, and micelle drug loading that reached 0.49%. The results of in vitro cytotoxicity experiments showed that the optimal dosage was 2.0 μg/mL, which had better inhibitory effect on tumor cells and less biological toxicity on heathy cells. Therefore, the cationic amphiphilic polymer can partially replace expensive commercial mitochondrial targeting reagents, and it can be also used as a drug loading tool to directly target mitochondria in cells for corresponding therapeutic research.

Adsorption-based thermochemical heat storage is a promising long-term energy storage technology that can be used for seasonal space heating, which has received significant amount of efforts on the research and development. In this paper, the heat storage capacity of composite adsorbents made by LiCl + LiBr salt and 3A zeolite was investigated. The basic characteristics of composite material groups were experimentally tested, and it was found that the adsorption composite with 15 wt% salt solution had excellent adsorption rate and adsorption capacity, which was considered as the optimal composite material. Furthermore, the heat storage density of the composite material could be as high as 585.3 J/g, which was 30.9% higher than that of pure zeolite. Using 3 kg of the composite material, the adsorption heat storage experiment was carried out using a lab-scale reactor. The effects of air velocity and relative humidity on the adsorption performance were investigated. It was found that a flow rate of 15 m3/h and a relative humidity of 70% led to the most released adsorption heat from the composite material, and 74.3% of energy discharge efficiency. Furthermore, an adsorption heat storage system and a residential model were built in the TRNSYS software to evaluate the building heating effect of such heat storage system. It is found that the ambient temperature will affect the heating effect of the adsorption heat storage system. The coefficient of performance (COP) of this model is as high as 6.67. Compared with the gas boiler heating system, the adsorption heat storage energy can replace part of the gas consumption to achieve energy savings.

Crystallographic dislocation has proven harmful to the carrier dynamics in conventional semiconductors but it is unexplored in metal halide perovskites. Here Jiang et al. grow remote epitaxial perovskite films on graphene with density-controlled dislocations and confirm their negative impact.

The band level landscape in quantum dots is of great significance toward achieving stable and efficient electroluminescent devices. A series of quantum dots with specific emission and band structure of the intermediate layer is designed, including rich CdS (R-CdS), thick ZnSe (T-ZnSe), thin ZnSe (t-ZnSe) and ZnCdS (R-ZnCdS) intermediate alloy shell layers. These quantum dots in QLEDs show superior performance, including maximum current efficiency, external quantum efficiencies and a T50 lifetime (at 1000 cd/m2) of 47.2 cd/A, 11.2% and 504 h for R-CdS; 61.6 cd/A, 14.7% and 612 h for t-ZnSe; 70.5 cd/A, 16.8% and 924 h for T-ZnSe; and 82.0 cd/A, 19.6% and 1104 h for R-ZnCdS. Among them, the quantum dots with the ZnCdS interlayer exhibit deep electron confinement and shallow hole confinement capabilities, which facilitate the efficient injection and radiative recombination of carriers into the emitting layer. Furthermore, the optimal devices show a superior T50 lifetime of more than 1000 h. The proposed novel methodology of quantum dot band engineering is expected to start a new way for further enhancing QLED exploration.

Rodent models are essential to translational research in health and disease. Investigation in rodent brain function and organization at the systems level using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) has become increasingly popular. Due to this rapid progress, publicly shared rodent rsfMRI databases can be of particular interest and importance to the scientific community, as inspired by human neuroscience and psychiatric research that are substantially facilitated by open human neuroimaging datasets. However, such databases in rats are still rare. In this paper, we share an open rsfMRI database acquired in 90 rats with a well-established awake imaging paradigm that avoids anesthesia interference. Both raw and preprocessed data are made publicly available. Procedures in data preprocessing to remove artefacts induced by the scanner, head motion and non-neural physiological noise are described in details. We also showcase inter-regional functional connectivity and functional networks obtained from the database.

The potential optoelectronic applications of metal halide perovskites make exploration and tuning of their optical properties of great interest. Here the authors show that non-emitting zero-dimensional cesium lead halide perovskites become strongly fluorescent under high pressure, due to distortion-induced effects.

Summary: Tankyrase (Tnks) transfers poly(ADP-ribose) on substrates. Whereas studies have highlighted the pivotal roles of Tnks in cancer, cherubism, systemic sclerosis, and viral infection, the requirement for Tnks under physiological contexts remains unclear. Here, we report that the loss of Tnks or its muscle-specific knockdown impairs lifespan, stress tolerance, and energy homeostasis in adult Drosophila. We find that Tnks is a positive regulator in the JNK signaling pathway, and modest alterations in the activity of JNK signaling can strengthen or suppress the Tnks mutant phenotypes. We further identify JNK as a direct substrate of Tnks. Although Tnks-dependent poly-ADP-ribosylation is tightly coupled to proteolysis in the proteasome, we demonstrate that Tnks initiates degradation-independent ubiquitination on two lysine residues of JNK to promote its kinase activity and in vivo functions. Our study uncovers a type of posttranslational modification of Tnks substrates and provides insights into Tnks-mediated physiological roles. : Poly-ADP-ribosylation of Tnks substrates is closely coupled to the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Li et al. reveal that Tnks can induce K63-linked ubiquitination to enhance the kinase activity of JNK. Abstract Background Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, a colonial cnidarian, is a tractable model system for many cnidarian-specific and general biological questions. Until recently, tests of gene function in Hydractinia have relied on laborious forward genetic approaches, randomly integrated transgenes, or transient knockdown of mRNAs. Results Here, we report the use of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing to generate targeted genomic insertions in H. symbiolonigcarpus. We used CRISPR/Cas9 to promote homologous recombination of two fluorescent reporters, eGFP and tdTomato, into the Eukaryotic elongation factor 1 alpha (Eef1a) locus. We demonstrate that the transgenes are expressed ubiquitously and are stable over two generations of breeding. We further demonstrate that CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing can be used to mark endogenous proteins with FLAG or StrepII-FLAG affinity tags to enable in vivo and ex vivo protein studies. Conclusions This is the first account of CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knockins in Hydractinia and the first example of the germline transmission of a CRISPR/Cas9 inserted transgene in a cnidarian. The ability to precisely insert exogenous DNA into the Hydractinia genome will enable sophisticated genetic studies and further development of functional genomics tools in this understudied cnidarian model.

Abstract The features of magnetic reconnection with a streaming flow have been investigated on the basis of compressible resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. The super-Alfvenic streaming flow largely enhances magnetic reconnection. The maximum reconnection rate is almost four times larger with super-Alfvenic streaming flow than sub-Alfvénic streaming flow. In the nonlinear stage, it is found that there is a pair of shocks observed in the inflow region, which are manifested to be slow shocks for sub-Alfvénic streaming flow, and fast shocks for super-Alfvénic streaming flow. The quasi-period oscillation of reconnection rates in the decaying phase for super-Alfvénic streaming flow is resulted from the different drifting velocities of the shock and the X point.

Abstract In attempt to the obtain detailed geometric information of proton transfer compound (subsequently denote as SQBP) formed between squaric acid (SQ)and 4,4′-bipyridine(BP), and to investigate the mechanisms of pressure-induced double proton transfer and related structural phase transition, we carried out in-situ high pressure Raman spectroscopy of SQBP up to 20 GPa. A solid-solid phase transition together with double proton transfer phenomenon was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy at about 1.5 GPa, and the activation of C = O stretching mode in Raman spectra indicates a square-ring structure of SQ with four symmetric C = O bond formation. These results are further supported by first-principals calculations and in-situ high pressure infrared absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, Raman intensity analysis suggests that a higher-order phase transition with planar BP molecular structure occurred in the pressure range of 3~6 GPa. As a result, the π electron delocalization effect in BP dominated the intensity enhancement of C = O stretching mode in SQ. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time observation of the intensity enhancement of proton donor’s normal modes induced by proton acceptor’s π electron delocalization.

An inclined goaf caused by storage mining is a serious risk to subgrades and pavements. In this paper, effective investigation and detection methods of goafs were discussed considering the project of the Urumqi East Ring Expressway crossing the existing goaf of Zhongxing no. 2 mine. Moreover, by theoretical analysis and a series of field comparative tests, reasonable grouting parameters and the treatment plan were obtained. By comparing the test results of the field and laboratory, the influence of groundwater on the effect of grouting was revealed to reduce the compressive strength of the consolidating objects of the slurry. The high-density resistivity method presented strong anti-interference ability and high accuracy in a depth range of less than 150 m in the investigation of the goaf. The results of the treatment showed that it is necessary to conduct research and analysis from multiple aspects to obtain the best treatment plan of a goaf and ensure the safety of a project.

To study the effect of the supersonic nozzle structure on the spontaneous condensation of water vapor, the wet steam model used to study the wet steam liquefaction of steam turbine was introduced into the numerical study of supersonic nozzle in supersonic cyclone separator, and the numerical results was in good agreement with the experimental data of the related literature. The supersonic nozzles, the contraction section with the Witozinsky curve and the bicubic curve, and the expansion section with conical curve and Foelsch curves, were designed. The influence of supersonic nozzle structure on water vapour liquefaction ability was investigated. And the following research results were obtained. When the structure of the supersonic nozzle was the same, the Witozinsky curve was selected for contraction section of the supersonic nozzle, and the nucleation rate of the droplet in the nozzle increased by 21.97 % and the number of droplets increased by 32.16 %, which was helpful to the gas liquefaction in the nozzle. When the contraction curve of the supersonic nozzle was consistent, and the expansion curve was Foelsch curve, the gas nucleation rate and the number of droplets in the nozzle were greatly improved. The distribution of nozzle humidity was related to the structure of expansion section, but not to the structure of contraction section. The maximum humidity in nozzle depended on the outlet diameter of nozzle. When the other structures of the nozzle were consistent, the cone angle of divergent section increased from 2° to 8°, the peak value of the nucleation rate increased by 493.15 %, the maximum of the droplet number increased by 246.12 %, the outlet humidity of the nozzle increased by 73.37 %, which greatly improved the gas liquefaction rate. In the case of gas liquefaction, increasing the cone angle of expansion section was conducive to liquefaction of water vapor.
