We construct simulated galaxy data sets based on the High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) mission concept to demonstrate the significant advances in galaxy science that will be yielded by the HEX-P observatory. The combination of high spatial resolution imaging (<20 arcsec FWHM), broad spectral coverage (0.2-80 keV), and sensitivity superior to current facilities (e.g., XMM-Newton and NuSTAR) will enable HEX-P to detect hard (4-25 keV) X-ray emission from resolved point-source populations within ~800 galaxies and integrated emission from ~6,000 galaxies out to 100 Mpc. These galaxies cover wide ranges of galaxy types (e.g., normal, starburst, and passive galaxies) and properties (e.g., metallicities and star-formation histories). In such galaxies, HEX-P will: 1) provide unique information about X-ray binary populations, including accretor demographics (black hole and neutron stars), distributions of accretion states and state transition cadences; 2) place order-of-magnitude more stringent constraints on inverse Compton emission associated with particle acceleration in starburst environments; and 3) put into clear context the contributions from X-ray emitting populations to both ionizing the surrounding interstellar medium in low-metallicity galaxies and heating the intergalactic medium in the z > 8 Universe. Context. Many physical processes taking place during the evolution of binary stellar systems remain poorly understood. The everexpanding observational sample of X-ray binaries (XRBs) makes them excellent laboratories for constraining binary evolution theory. Such constraints and useful insights can be obtained by studying the effects of various physical assumptions on synthetic X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) and comparing them with observed XLFs. Aims. In this work we focus on high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and study the effects on the XLF of various, poorly constrained assumptions regarding physical processes, such as the common-envelope phase, core collapse, and wind-fed accretion. Methods. We used the new binary population synthesis code POSYDON, which employs extensive precomputed grids of detailed stellar structure and binary evolution models, to simulate the entire evolution of binaries. We generated 96 synthetic XRB populations corresponding to different combinations of model assumptions, including different prescriptions for supernova kicks, supernova remnant masses, common-envelope evolution, circularization at the onset of Roche-lobe overflow, and observable wind-fed accretion. Results. The generated HMXB XLFs are feature-rich, deviating from the commonly assumed single power law. We find a break in our synthetic XLF at luminosity ~1038 erg s1, similar to observed XLFs. However, we also find a general overabundance of XRBs (up to a factor of ~10 for certain model parameter combinations) driven primarily by XRBs with black hole accretors. Assumptions about the transient behavior of Be XRBs, asymmetric supernova kicks, and common-envelope physics can significantly affect the shape and normalization of our synthetic XLFs. We find that less well-studied assumptions regarding the circularization of the orbit at the onset of Roche-lobe overflow and criteria for the formation of an X-ray-emitting accretion disk around wind-accreting black holes can also impact our synthetic XLFs and reduce the discrepancy with observations. Conclusions. Our synthetic XLFs do not always agree well with observations, especially at intermediate X-ray luminosities, which is likely due to uncertainties in the adopted physical assumptions. While some model parameters leave distinct imprints on the shape of the synthetic XLFs and can reduce this deviation, others do not have a significant effect overall. We present the two-point cross-correlation function between high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and their likely birthplaces (OB associations: OBAs). This function compares the spatial correlation between the observed HMXB and OBA populations against mock catalogs in which the members are distributed randomly across the sky. A significant correlation (∼15 σ) is found for the HMXB and OBA populations when compared with a randomized catalog in which the OBAs are distributed uniformly over the SMC. A less significant correlation (4 σ) is found for a randomized catalog of OBAs built with a bootstrap method. However, no significant correlation is detected when the randomized catalogs assume the form of a Gaussian ellipsoid or a distribution that reflects the star formation history from 40 Myr ago. Based on their observed distributions and assuming a range of migration timescales, we infer that the average value of the kick velocity inherited by an HMXB during the formation of its compact object is 2â€"34 km sâˆ'1. This is considerably less than the value obtained for their counterparts in the Milky Way hinting that the galactic environment affecting stellar evolution plays a role in setting the average kick velocity of HMXBs. In this work, we present detailed constraints on the metallicity dependence of the high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) X-ray luminosity function (XLF). We analyze ≈5 Ms of Chandra data for 55 actively star-forming galaxies at D ≲ 30 Mpc, with gas-phase metallicities spanning ≈ 7–9.2. Within the galactic footprints, our sample contains a total of 1311 X-ray point sources, of which ≈49% are expected to be HMXBs, with the remaining sources likely to be low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs; ≈22%) and unrelated background sources (≈29%). We construct a model that successfully characterizes the average HMXB XLF over the full metallicity range. We demonstrate that the SFR-normalized HMXB XLF shows clear trends with metallicity, showing steadily increasing numbers of luminous and ultraluminous X-ray sources ((erg s−1) = 38–40.5) with declining metallicity. However, we find that the low-luminosity ((erg s−1) = 36–38) HMXB XLF appears to show a nearly constant SFR scaling and slope with metallicity. Our model provides a revised scaling relation of integrated LX/SFR versus , and a new characterization of its SFR-dependent stochastic scatter. The general trend of this relation is broadly consistent with past studies based on integrated galaxy emission; however, our model suggests that this relation is driven primarily by the high-luminosity end of the HMXB XLF. Our results have implications for binary population synthesis models, the nature of super-Eddington accreting objects (e.g., ultraluminous X-ray sources), recent efforts to identify active galactic nucleus candidates in dwarf galaxies, and the X-ray radiation fields in the early universe during the epoch of cosmic heating at z ≳ 10. eROSITA , launched on 2019 July 13, will be completing the first all-sky survey in the soft and medium X-ray band in nearly three decades. This 4-yr survey, finishing in late 2023, will present a rich legacy for the entire astrophysics community and complement upcoming multiwavelength surveys (with, e.g. the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Dark Energy Survey). Besides the major scientific aim to study active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxy clusters, eROSITA will contribute significantly to X-ray studies of normal (i.e. not AGN) galaxies. Starting from multiwavelength catalogues, we measure star formation rates and stellar masses for 60 212 galaxies constrained to distances of 50–200 Mpc. We chose this distance range to focus on the relatively unexplored volume outside the local Universe, where galaxies will be largely spatially unresolved and probe a range of X-ray luminosities that overlap with the low luminosity and/or highly obscured AGN population. We use the most recent X-ray scaling relations as well as the on-orbit eROSITA instrument performance to predict the X-ray emission from XRBs and diffuse hot gas and to perform both an analytic prediction and an end-to-end simulation using the mission simulation software, sixte. We consider potential contributions from hidden AGN and comment on the impact of normal galaxies on the measurement of the faint end of the AGN luminosity function. We predict that the eROSITA 4-yr survey, will detect ≳15 000 galaxies (3σ significance) at 50–200 Mpc, which is ∼100 × more normal galaxies than detected in any X-ray survey to date. We analyse the vertical distribution of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in NGC 55, the nearest edge-on galaxy to the Milky Way (MW), based on X-ray observations by Chandra. Adopting a statistical approach, we estimate the difference between the scale height of the vertical distribution of HMXBs and the vertical distribution of star-forming activity between 0.33 and 0.57 kpc. The spatial offsets can be explained by a momentum kick the X-ray binaries receive during the formation of the compact object after a supernova explosion of the primary star. Determining the vertical distribution of HMXBs in the MW using Gaia DR2 astrometry, we find that the corresponding difference is considerably lower at 0.036 ± 0.003 kpc, attributed to the greater gravitational potential of the MW. We also calculate the centre-of-mass transverse velocities of HMXBs in NGC 55, using traveltime information from binary population synthesis codes and for different star formation histories (SFHs). For a flat SFH model (typical of spiral galaxies like NGC 55), we find that HMXBs are moving with a typical transverse velocity between 34 and 48 km s−1, consistent with space velocities of MW HMXBs. For an exponentially declining SFH model, HMXBs are moving at a velocity of 21 km s−1, consistent with the corresponding velocity of HMXBs in the Small Magellanic Cloud and Large Magellanic Cloud. Finally, we estimate the formation efficiency of HMXBs in NGC 55 at 299 |$_{-46}^{+50}$| (systems/M⊙ yr−1), consistent within the errors with the Magellanic Clouds but significantly higher than the MW, a difference that can be explained by the subsolar metallicity of NGC 55. The formation and evolution of double neutron stars (DNS) have traditionally been studied using binary population synthesis. In this work, we take an alternative approach by focusing only on the second supernova (SN) forming the DNS and the subsequent orbital decay and merger due to gravitational wave radiation. Using analytic and numerical methods, we explore how different NS natal kick velocity distributions, pre-SN orbital separations, and progenitor He-star masses affect the post-SN orbital periods, eccentricities, merger times, systemic velocities, and distances travelled by the system before merging. Comparison with the set of 17 known DNSs in the Milky Way shows that DNSs have pre-SN orbital separations ranging between 1 and 44 |${\, \mathrm{R}_{\odot }}$|⁠. Those DNSs with pre-SN separations ∼1 |${\, \mathrm{R}_{\odot }}$| have merger time distributions that peak ∼10–100 Myr after formation, regardless of the kick velocity received by the NS. These DNSs are typically formed with systemic velocities ∼102 km s−1 and may travel ∼1–10 kpc before merging. Depending on progenitor mass of the second-born NS, the short merger time can account for the r -process enrichment observed in compact stellar systems such as ultrafaint dwarf galaxies. For Milky Way-mass galaxies only DNSs with the tightest pre-SN orbits and large kick velocities (≳102 km s−1) can escape. However, those DNSs that do escape may travel as far as ∼Mpc before merging, which as previous studies have pointed out has implications for identifying the host galaxies to short gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave events. We propose a new soft clustering scheme for classifying galaxies in different activity classes using simultaneously four emission-line ratios: log ([ |${\rm N\,\small {II}}$| ]/H α), log ([ |${\rm S\,\small {II}}$| ]/H α), log ([ |${\rm O\,\small {I}}$| ]/H α), and log ([ |${\rm O\,\small {III}}$| ]/H β). We fit 20 multivariate Gaussian distributions to the four-dimensional distribution of these lines obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to capture local structures and subsequently group the multivariate Gaussian distributions to represent the complex multidimensional structure of the joint distribution of galaxy spectra in the four-dimensional line ratio space. The main advantages of this method are the use of all four optical-line ratios simultaneously and the adoption of a clustering scheme. This maximizes the use of the available information, avoids contradicting classifications, and treats each class as a distribution resulting in soft classification boundaries and providing the probability for an object to belong to each class. We also introduce linear multidimensional decision surfaces using support vector machines based on the classification of our soft clustering scheme. Galaxy mergers are key events in galaxy evolution, often causing massive starbursts and fueling active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In these highly dynamic systems, it is not yet precisely known how much starbursts and AGNs, respectively, contribute to the total luminosity, at what interaction stages they occur, and how long they persist. Here we estimate the fraction of the bolometric infrared (IR) luminosity that can be attributed to AGNs by measuring and modeling the full ultraviolet to far-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in up to 33 broad bands for 24 merging galaxies with the Code for Investigating Galaxy Emission. In addition to a sample of 12 confirmed AGNs in late-stage mergers, found in the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Revised Faint Source Catalog, our sample includes a comparison sample of 12 galaxy mergers from the Spitzer Interacting Galaxies Survey, mostly early stage. We also perform SED modeling of merger simulations to validate our methods, and we supplement the SEDs with mid-IR spectra of diagnostic lines obtained with Spitzer 's InfraRed Spectrograph. The estimated AGN contributions to the IR luminosities vary from system to system from 0 per cent up to ∼91 per cent but are significantly greater in the later-stage, more luminous mergers, consistent with what is known about galaxy evolution and AGN triggering. We report the evidence for the anticorrelation between pulsed fraction (PF) and luminosity of the X-ray pulsar SXP 1323, found for the first time in a luminosity range 1035–1037 erg s−1 from observations spanning 15 yr. The phenomenon of a decrease in X-ray PF when the source flux increases has been observed in our pipeline analysis of other X-ray pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. It is expected that the luminosity under a certain value decreases as the PF decreases due to the propeller effect. Above the propeller region, an anticorrelation between the PF and the flux might occur either as a result of an increase in the unpulsed component of the total emission or a decrease of the pulsed component. Additional modes of accretion may also be possible, such as spherical accretion and a change in emission geometry. At higher mass accretion rates, the accretion disc could also extend closer to the neutron star surface, where a reduced inner radius leads to hotter inner disc emission. We analyse the vertical distribution of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) in NGC 55, the nearest edge-on galaxy to the Milky Way. Our analysis reveals significant spatial offsets of HMXBs from the star forming regions, greater than those observed in the SMC and the LMC but similar with the Milky Way. The spatial offsets can be explained by a momentum kick the X-ray binaries receive during the formation of the compact object. The difference between the scale height of the vertical distribution of HMXBs and the vertical distribution of star-forming activity is 0.48±0.04 kpc. The centre-of-mass velocity of the distribution of HMXBs in NGC 55 is moving at a velocity of 52.4±11.4 km s−1, greater than the corresponding velocity of HMXBs in the SMC and LMC, but consistent with velocities of Milky Way HMXBs. We use deep Chandra and HST data to uniquely classify the X-ray binary (XRB) populations in M81 on the basis of their donor stars and local stellar populations (into early-type main sequence, yellow giant, supergiant, low-mass, and globular cluster). First, we find that more massive, redder, and denser globular clusters are more likely to be associated with XRBs. Second, we find that the high-mass XRBs (HMXBs) overall have a steeper X-ray luminosity function (XLF) than the canonical star-forming galaxy XLF, though there is some evidence of variations in the slopes of the sub-populations. On the other hand, the XLF of the prototypical starburst M82 is described by the canonical powerlaw (αcum ∼ 0.6) down to LX ∼ 1036 erg s−1. . The nature and evolution of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) is an open problem in astrophysics. They challenge our current understanding of stellar compact objects and accretion physics. The recent discovery of pulsar ULXs further demonstrates the importance of this intriguing and rare class of objects. In order to overcome the difficulties of directly studying the optical associations of ULXs, we generally resort in statistical studies of the stellar properties of their host galaxies. We present the largest such study based on the combination of Chandra archival data with the most complete galaxy catalog of the Local Universe. Incorporating robust distances and stellar population parameters based on associated multi-wavelength information, and we explore the association of ULXs with galaxies in the (star formation rate, stellar mass, metallicity) space. We confirm the known correlation with morphology, star formation rate and stellar mass, while we find an excess of ULXs in dwarf galaxies, indicating dependence on age and metallicity. SN 1987A has been observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory over the entire course of the mission. We have re-analyzed the archival data by constructing an empirical point spread function and reconstructing high-resolution images using a Bayesian multi-scale image reconstruction algorithm. We are able to resolve structure in the equatorial ring of SN 1987A with unprecedented detail, at scales of $\approx \frac{1}{4}$ arcsec. Almost all confirmed optical counterparts of HMXBs in the SMC are OB stars with equatorial decretion disks (OBe). These sources emit strongly in Balmer lines and standout when imaged through narrow-band H α imaging. The lack of secure counterparts for a significant fraction of the HMXBs motivated us to search for more. Using the catalogs for OB/OBe stars (Maravelias et al. 2017) and for HMXBs (Haberl & Sturm 2016) we detect 70 optical counterparts (out of 104 covered by our survey). We provide the first identification of the optical counterpart to the source XTEJ0050-731. We verify that 17 previously uncertain optical counterparts are indeed the proper matches. Regarding 52 confirmed HMXBs (known optical counterparts with H α emission), we detect 39 as OBe and another 13 as OB stars. This allows a direct estimation of the fraction of active OBe stars in HMXBs that show H α emission at a given epoch to be at least ∼75% of their total HMXB population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The total infrared (IR) luminosity is very useful for estimating the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies, but converting the IR luminosity into an SFR relies on assumptions that do not hold for all galaxies. We test the effectiveness of the IR luminosity as an SFR indicator by applying it to synthetic spectral energy distributions generated from three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of isolated disc galaxies and galaxy mergers. In general, the SFR inferred from the IR luminosity agrees well with the true instantaneous SFR of the simulated galaxies. However, for the major mergers in which a strong starburst is induced, the SFR inferred from the IR luminosity can overestimate the instantaneous SFR during the post-starburst phase by greater than two orders of magnitude. Even though the instantaneous SFR decreases rapidly after the starburst, the stars that were formed in the starburst can remain dust-obscured and thus produce significant IR luminosity. Consequently, use of the IR luminosity as an SFR indicator may cause one to conclude that post-starburst galaxies are still star forming, whereas in reality, star formation was recently quenched. We have obtained a deep, subarcsecond resolution X-ray image of the nuclear region of the luminous galaxy merger NGC 6240 with Chandra, which resolves the X-ray emission from the pair of active nuclei and the diffuse hot gas in great detail. We detect extended hard X-ray emission from kT ∼ 6 keV (∼70 MK) hot gas over a spatial scale of 5 kpc, indicating the presence of fast shocks with a velocity of ∼2200 km s–1. For the first time, we obtain the spatial distribution of this highly ionized gas emitting Fe XXV, which shows a remarkable correspondence to the large-scale morphology of H2(1-0) S(1) line emission and Hα filaments. Propagation of fast shocks originating in the starburst-driven wind into the ambient dense gas can account for this morphological correspondence. With an observed L0.5-8 keV = 5.3 × 1041 erg s–1, the diffuse hard X-ray emission is ∼100 times more luminous than that observed in the classic starburst galaxy M82. Assuming a filling factor of 1% for the 70 MK temperature gas, we estimate its total mass (Mhot = 1.8 × 108M☼) and thermal energy (Eth = 6.5 × 1057 erg). The total iron mass in the highly ionized plasma is MFe = 4.6 × 105M☼. Both the energetics and the iron mass in the hot gas are consistent with the expected injection from the supernovae explosion during the starburst that is commensurate with its high star formation rate. We measured and modeled spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in 28 bands from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared (FIR) for 31 interacting galaxies in 14 systems. The sample is drawn from the Spitzer Interacting Galaxy Survey, which probes a range of galaxy interaction parameters at multiple wavelengths with an emphasis on the infrared bands. The subset presented in this paper consists of all galaxies for which FIR Herschel SPIRE observations are publicly available. Our SEDs combine the Herschel photometry with multi-wavelength data from Spitzer, GALEX, Swift UVOT, and 2MASS. While the shapes of the SEDs are broadly similar across our sample, strongly interacting galaxies typically have more mid-infrared emission relative to their near-infrared and FIR emission than weakly or moderately interacting galaxies. We modeled the full SEDs to derive host galaxy star formation rates (SFRs), specific star formation rates (sSFRs), stellar masses, dust temperatures, dust luminosities, and dust masses. We find increases in the dust luminosity and mass, SFR, and cold (15-25 K) dust temperature as the interaction progresses from moderately to strongly interacting and between non-interacting and strongly interacting galaxies. We also find increases in the SFR between weakly and strongly interacting galaxies. In contrast, the sSFR remains unchanged across all the interaction stages. The ultraviolet photometry is crucial for constraining the age of the stellar population and the SFR, while dust mass is primarily determined by SPIRE photometry. This paper is the third in a series in which we present deep Chandra ACIS-S imaging spectroscopy of the Seyfert l galaxy NGC 4151, devoted to study its complex circumnuclear X-ray emission. Emission features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the bright extended emission (L0.3-2 keV ~ 1040 erg s-1) at r > 130 pc (2") are consistent with blended brighter O VII, O VIII, and Ne IX lines seen in the Chandra HETGS and XMM-Newton RGS spectra below 2 eV. We construct emission line images of these features and find good morphological correlations with the narrow-line region clouds mapped in [O III] λ5007. Self-consistent photoionization models provide good descriptions of the spectra of the large-scale emission, as well as resolved structures, supporting the dominant role of nuclear photoionization, although displacement of optical and X-ray features implies a more complex medium. Collisionally ionized emission is estimated to be ≾12% of the extended emission. Presence of both low- and high-ionization spectral components and extended emission in the X-ray image perpendicular to the bicone indicates leakage of nuclear ionization, likely filtered through warm absorbers, instead of being blocked by a continuous obscuring torus. The ratios of [O III]/soft X-ray flux are approximately constant (~ 15) tor the 1.5 kpc radius spanned by these measurements, indicating similar relative contributions from the low- and high-ionization gas phases at different radial distances from the nucleus. If the [O III] and X-ray emission arise from a single photoionized medium, this further implies an outflow with a wind-like density profile. Using spatially resolved X-ray features, we estimate that the mass outflow rate in NGC 4151 is ~2 M⊙ yr-1 at 130 pc and the kinematic power of the ionized outflow is 1.7 x 1041 erg s-1, approximately 0.3% of the bolometric luminosity of the active nucleus in NGC 4151. The evolution of galaxies is greatly influenced by their interactions. As part of a program to study interacting galaxies, we have measured and modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (FIR). We describe the constraints imposed on star formation histories by these SEDs, and the variations therein seen across the interaction sequence, and we compare the results of different star formation rate prescriptions applied to the data. The sample itself is based on the Spitzer Interacting Galaxy Survey (SIGS) of 111 galaxies in 50 systems, a project designed to probe a range of galaxy interaction parameters in the infrared. Our SEDs combine the Spitzer results with multiwavelength data from other missions, in particular GALEX and Herschel. We have studied the X-ray emission within the inner ~150 pc radius of NGC 4151 by constructing high spatial resolution emission line images of blended O VII, O VIII, and Ne IX. These maps show extended structures that are spatially correlated with the radio outflow and optical [O III] emission. We find strong evidence for jet-gas cloud interaction, including morphological correspondences with regions of X-ray enhancement, peaks of near-infrared [Fe II] emission, and optical clouds. In these regions, moreover, we find evidence of elevated Ne IX/O VII ratios; the X-ray emission of these regions also exceeds that expected from nuclear photoionization. Spectral fitting reveals the presence of a collisionally ionized component. The thermal energy of the hot gas suggests that ≳0.1% of the estimated jet power is deposited into the host interstellar medium through interaction between the radio jet and the dense medium of the circumnuclear region. We find possible pressure equilibrium between the collisionaily ionized hot gas and the photoionized line-emitting cool clouds. We also obtain constraints on the extended iron and silicon fluorescent emission. Both lines are spatially unresolved. The upper limit on the contribution of an extended emission region to the Fe Kα emission is ≲5% of the total, in disagreement with a previous claim that 65% of the Fe Kα emission originates in the extended narrow line region.
