Abstract: We present a comprehensive study on the controlled phase synthesis and thermal decomposition of Cd(BH2)4, a material for solid state hydrogen storage obtained via the metathesis reaction of LiBH4 with CdCl2. By adjusting the stochiometry of the reactants and controlling the mechanical milling vial temperature, we have isolated the tetragonal (P42mn) low temperature phase and the cubic () high temperature phase of the cadmium borohydride. Cd(BH2)4 has a low thermodynamic stability and decomposes with fast kinetic at 348K, when heated at 1Kmin−1 against a backpressure of 1bar H2. A semi-quantitative analysis reveals that the decomposition gases are composed of 1:1 H2 +B2H6 and that only Cd remains as solid crystalline phase. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Clean Energy Package expects a fundamental contribute for the decarbonisation of European energy system from Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), pushing Member States to favour the diffusion of energy production plants for individual and collective self-consumption. At the same time, DERs are required to contribute to system security mainly providing dispatching resources. The model developed includes the possibility to provide real-time balancing flexibility in a generic architecture where different energy vectors can be integrated through energy production, consumption and storage facilities. The optimization problem is built over a weekly time horizon with a stepwise approach where internal and external energy exchanges are defined updating meteorological forecasts, energy demands and markets results while approaching real-time operations. According to the Italian Authority consultation document 322/2019, both energy-only and capacity remunerated services are included in the model. The aim of the model is both to estimate the economic opportunities coming from energy markets participation for smart energy districts in the future energy framework, and to assess the actual capability and reliability of diverse DERs aggregates to provide flexibility to the external electric grid. These evaluations are carried out applying the presented model to a university campus case study where different energy conversion and storage plants are integrated at a Distribution Network level.

Energy Communities (ECs) are gaining a key role in supporting the transition towards a low carbon economy in EU, since they combine the promotion of efficient energy practices with an expected positive social impact. Legislators are resorting to the concept of collective self-consumption as a tool to favor the electrification of energy needs and the diffusion of renewable energy sources. This work presents the first results in this field of the ENERGYNIUS project, co-funded by Regione Emilia-Romagna, focusing on the economic feasibility of investment decisions that would increase energy efficiency and renewables’ penetration in the household sector. To this purpose, a mathematical model has been developed, featuring an hourly time step definition of the internal and external energy exchanges and an accurate modelling of the electricity billing. It has been applied to an Italian condominium case study where the energy requirements of the inhabitants – in terms of electricity, heating, cooling and private transportation – have been considered. Thanks to the model, it is possible to compare increasing levels of electrification (e.g., photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, electric vehicles and batteries) and assess the benefits of collective selfconsumption on the condominium cash flows and environment (fossil CO2 emissions).

Translation of mRNAs is a fundamental process that occurs in all cell types of multicellular organisms. Conventionally, it has been considered a default step in gene expression, lacking specific regulation. However, recent studies have documented that certain mRNAs exhibit cell type-specific translation. Despite this, it remains unclear whether global translation is controlled in a cell type-specific manner. By using human cell lines and mouse models, we found that deletion of the ribosome-associated protein ribonuclease inhibitor 1 (RNH1) decreases global translation selectively in hematopoietic-origin cells but not in the non-hematopoietic-origin cells. RNH1-mediated cell type-specific translation is mechanistically linked to angiogenin-induced ribosomal biogenesis. Collectively, this study unravels the existence of cell type-specific global translation regulators and highlights the complex translation regulation in vertebrates.

Both genetic and early environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Gender and psychopathology symptoms might further moderate this association, resulting in an impairment of both the dopaminergic and serotoninergic pathways that sustain the binge, withdrawal and craving cycle. In a sample of of adult children of alcoholic parents (ACOAs) (n = 107) we compared those with and without an AUD, on socio-demographic variables, adverse childhood experiences, psychopathology symptoms and two polymorphisms associated with an impaired serotoninergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission (5HTTLPR and Taq1A/DRD2). A logistic regression revealed that an early caring environment might lower the risk of developing an AUD. When controlling for the actual psychopathology symptoms, being male and having the genotype associated with an impaired dopaminergic neurotransmission were still associated with AUD. Results were confirmed by an unsupervised approach that showed how the clusters characterised by being male and having the high risk genotypes were still associated with AUD compared to being female without the unfavourable dopamine genotype.Our results point to the need for implementing prevention strategies aimed at creating a caring environment especially in those families with an alcoholic parent. We further suggest that psycho-education as a symptom recognition and avoiding self-medication could improve the outcome in those subjects at higher risk, especially males., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Fungal infections have increased during the last years due to the AIDS epidemic and immunosuppressive therapies. The available diagnostic methods, such as culture, histopathology and serology, have several drawbacks regarding sensitivity, specificity and time-consuming, while molecular methods are still expensive and dependent on many devices. In order to overcome these challenges, isothermal nucleic acid amplification techniques (INAT) arose as promising diagnostic methods for infectious diseases., Objective: This review aimed to present and discuss the main contributions of the isothermal nucleic acid amplification techniques applied in medical mycology., Methods: Papers containing terms for each INAT (NASBA, RCA, LAMP, CPA, SDA, HAD or PSR) and the terms 'mycoses' or 'disease, fungal' were obtained from National Center for Biotechnology Information database until August 2019., Results: NASBA, RCA, LAMP and PSR are the INAT reported in the literature for detection and identification of pathogenic fungi. Despite the need of a previous conventional PCR, the RCA technique might also be used for genotyping or cryptic species differentiation, which may be important for the treatment of certain mycoses; nevertheless, LAMP is the most used INAT for pathogen detection., Conclusion: Among all INATs herein reviewed, LAMP seems to be the most appropriate method for fungal detection, since it is affordable, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid, robust, equipment-free and deliverable to end-users, fulfilling all ASSURED criteria of the World Health Organization for an ideal diagnostic method., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Background: Ticlopidine inhibits platelet aggregation by preventing the binding of fibrinogen to its platelet receptor. We examined whether this inhibition involved platelet transduction system such as Na+/H+ pump and platelet intracellular calcium., Methods: Platelet adhesion in 13 patients with peripheral vascular disease treated with ticlopidine, 250 mg b.i.d for 30 days, was measured in culture microplates before and after therapy. The microplate wells were coated with human plasma, fibrinogen or collagen, and platelet adhesion was studied in the resting condition and after stimulation with 1 and 10 microM ADP. At the same time, platelet intracellular calcium and ADP-induced calcium increases were measured with the fluorescent indicator Fura 2. In addition, intracellular pH and thrombin-induced pH variations were measured with the fluorescent probe BCECF., Results: Platelet adhesion to plasma and fibrinogen was significantly reduced (about 50%) after treatment with ticlopidine, while adhesion to collagen was not modified. Basal calcium and ADP-induced calcium increase were not significantly different before and after ticlopidine. Platelet basal intracellular pH was reduced (from 7.44+/-0.009 to 7.41+/-0.017, p<0.05), but agonist-induced alkalinisation was not significantly different. Early acidification, not dependent on Na+/H+ exchange, was also reduced (p<0.05)., Conclusions: These data do not seem to support the hypothesis that ticlopidine-induced reduction of platelet adhesion depends on alteration of the mechanisms determining signal transduction, at least as far as basal and post-stimulation intracellular calcium is concerned. On the contrary, the possibility that ticlopidine inhibits the Na+/H+ antiport remains open to consideration.

Oxidized LDL has been observed to induce abnormalities in endothelial function which may be relevant for the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. We studied in vitro the possible effects of oxidized LDL on the antiaggregating activity of endothelial cells, which is dependent on release of prostacyclin and nitric oxide. We used an experimental model in which cultured human endothelial cells were placed in the aggregometer in contact with human platelets, after blockade of cyclo-oxygenase by adding acetylsalicylic acid. In this way the antiaggregant effect of endothelial cells was dependent on the release of nitric oxide alone; prevention of antiaggregant activity by preincubation of endothelial cells with 300 microM L-NG-mono-methylarginine confirmed this. When this system was used, endothelial cells (2-7.5 x 10(5)/ml) almost completely inhibited thrombin-induced (0.02-0.08 U/ml) platelet aggregation (2 x 10(8) platelets/ml), measured according to Born (11.1% +/- 8.5 vs 68.6% +/- 12.6, M +/- SD). This antiaggregating activity was reduced when slightly oxidized LDL 100 micrograms/ml (35.2% +/- 14.9, p < 0.001), but not native LDL 100 micrograms/ml (7.5% +/- 7.6), was added immediately before aggregation was induced. Incubation of endothelial cells with oxidized LDL 100 micrograms/ml for 1 h did not affect the antiaggregating capacity, unless oxidized LDL was present during aggregation (18.3% +/- 10.2 vs 35.8% +/- 9.6, p < 0.02). No significant direct effect of either oxidized or native LDL on stimulated platelet aggregation was observed. Our results indicate that slightly oxidized LDL can reduce the antiaggregating properties of the endothelium, probably by interaction with NO rather than through inhibition of its synthesis.

In 196 adult patients with chronic renal disease or primary hypertension, the evaluation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by means of creatinine clearance, 'predicted' creatinine clearance and [125I]-iothalamate clearance was performed. Iothalamate clearance was evaluated after subcutaneous injection of the substance . In patients with normal or upper borderline plasma creatinine values, the iothalamate clearance ranged from 44 to 117 ml/min/1.73 m2 and the overestimation of GFR from creatinine clearance was negligible. In patients with mild or advanced renal failure, the overestimation of GFR from creatinine clearance increased up to 18 and 32%, respectively. The clinical usefulness of iothalamate clearance is evident especially in patients with mild renal failure, in whom an accurate evaluation of GFR is often important for a correct dietary and therapeutic approach.

15-hydroxy-prostaglandin-dehydrogenase (PGDH) activity was studied in rat kidney homogenates during the development of hypertension, within 20 days after left renal artery constriction by a solid silver clip. In the ischemic kidney PGDH activity increased at day 6, reached maximum at day 10, then progressively at day 15 and returned to normal levels at day 20. No difference was found between contralateral kidneys and kidneys of normotensive control rats. Variations of PGDH activity did not seem to be related to either renal perfusion pressure or renin production. Increased PGDH activity may be a consequence of an enzyme induction following increased PG-synthetase activity, or it could be viewed as a defence mechanism, according to the hypothesis of a prohypertensive effect of PG in the rat.

An automated procedure to help general practitioners in clinical diagnosis and decision making is presented. The computer-based program is conceived to process results from laboratory tests performed on outpatients, providing general practitioners with possible causes of abnormal results. When only one or two abnormal tests are observed, a series of suggestions pertinent to each abnormality is printed. When there are more abnormal test results, the program performs a more complex procedure ending with the output of some diagnostic hypotheses. Messages are also printed to focus the physician's attention to particular aspects of patient pathology that were sometimes missed or disregarded and to suggest new investigations the laboratory can perform to improve diagnostic efficiency. Moreover some advice is supplied to allow a better evaluation of particular risk conditions, as those associated with the development of coronary heart disease. The program has been recently extended with the calculation of intraindividual reference intervals. The system described has been working since 1976 and appears particularly useful when the general practitioner is faced with a number of pathological results of difficult interpretation.

1. The 24 h urinary excretion of kallikrein has been studied in 40 normotensive control subjects and in 74 age-matched patients with essential hypertension under similar conditions. By use of the renin-sodium index, hypertensive patients were divided into two subgroup: low-renin hypertension and normal-renin hypertension patients. Urinary kallikrein determinations were also obtained from six hypertensive patients with primary aldosteronism. 2. Urinary kallikrein was significantly lower both in patients with normal-renin and low-renin essential hypertension. Urinary kallikrein excretion was very high in the patients with primary aldosteronism. 3. In nine hypertensive patients beta-adreno-receptor-blocking therapy caused a significant decrease of plasma renin activity, but had no significant effect on urinary kallikrein excretion. 4. The results support the concept that low urinary kallikrein is likely to be a marker of essential hypertension. Under certain conditions its excretion is positively related to mineralocorticoid hormone concentrations but it is not primarily related to the renin-angiotensin system.
