Objective: Our objective was to investigate the perceived stress levels among pharmacy students enrolled at the University of Duhok both prior to and following examination periods, with a concurrent assessment of potential cardiovascular effects., Methods: The study included 49 participants from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Duhok and utilized a pre-post cohort design. High-stress pre-examination assessments were scheduled at 8:30 AM on the day of the examination, and low-stress post-examination assessments were also conducted at 8:30 AM over a two-week period without academic examinations., Results: The pre-exam serum cortisol level was significantly higher compared to the post-exam period (16.66 vs. 14.04 μg/dL; p = 0.013). Elevated levels of non-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and cholesterol/HDL ratio were recorded during high-stress periods. Remarkably, social media emerged as the sole significant predictor (p = 0.038) with a negative impact on serum cortisol levels during the pre-exam phase. Additionally, we observed that females had higher stress levels during both periods, as indicated by the regression model., Conclusions: This investigation revealed a significant elevation in serum cortisol levels during the pre-examination phase, likely attributable to the stress induced by impending examinations., Competing Interests: All the authors declare no conflict of interest.

Background: The role of dietary fat quality in promotion of cardiovascular diseases is studies before. However, the results are inconsistent. Recently, cholesterol to saturated fatty acid index (CSI) is suggested as a novel indicator of the atherogenicity and thrombogenicity potential of a diet. However, due to limited number of studies, in the current cross-sectional study, we aimed to evaluate the role of CSI in metabolic and inflammatory response among obese individuals., Methods: In the current cross-sectional study 488 obese individuals aged 18-50 years old were involved in volunteer based invitation from outpatient obesity clinics. Subjects underwent anthropometric assays including weight, height, waist circumference (WC) and body composition and their fasting blood sample were obtained for biochemical assessments including blood sugar, serum lipids, hs-CRP and IL-6 concentrations by commercial kits. Physical activity was also assessed by short form of international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ)., Results: According to our results, being at the top tetile of CSI was associated with higher anthropometric indices including weight, height, WC, FFM, and basal metabolic rate (BMR) compared with those at the lowest tertile (P < 0.05). Similarly, those at the highest category of CSI had significantly higher levels of serum glucose and hs-CRP both in crude and adjusted models in ANCOVA and in multinomial logistic regression models (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: In the current study, for the first time, we identified the possible triggering role of dietary cholesterol to saturated fat index in increasing serum glucose and hs-CRP levels. due to cross-sectional design of the current study, causal inference is impossible. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is presented with a cluster of cardio-metabolic risk factors with widespread prevalence. In the present case-control study, we aimed to examine the relationship between several minerals and renal function tests with the components of MetS in individuals with obesity., Methods: This study included 127 individuals with obesity of both gender with or without MetS as the case and control, respectively. MetS was characterized based on the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Anthropometric variables and blood pressure were recorded. Mineral status including serum magnesium, copper, calcium, phosphorous, and iron were measured using standard colorimetric methods. Also, the serum lipid levels, concentrations of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL), and renal function tests, including total protein, albumin, urea, creatinine, and uric acid were evaluated using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits., Results: According to our results, individuals with obesity and MetS had higher levels of waist circumference (WC) and diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.05) compared to individuals with obesity and without MetS. Moreover, individuals with obesity and MetS had higher levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), insulin, and iron (P < 0.05). In individuals with obesity and MetS, iron and albumin showed a positive relationship with LDL cholesterol and TG concentrations, respectively (P < 0.05 for all of them). Also, there was a positive association between serum magnesium and Ox- LDL in individuals with obesity with MetS. While, in individuals with obesity and without MetS, only a positive association between urea and uric acid with WC was observed (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Our results suggest that disturbed serum lipids in obesity-metabolic syndrome is associated with homeostatic changes in the level of minerals or proteins that are involved in their metabolism. To track post-transfusion changes on the erythropoietin (EPO)-erythroferrone (ERFE)-hepcidin axis, we collected blood samples from 82 regularly transfused patients with β-thalassaemia major (β-TM) immediately before and 4-6 days after transfusion. The post-transfusion haemoglobin, hepcidin, and ferritin levels were increased, while the EPO, ERFE, and soluble transferrin receptor were suppressed. In addition, hepcidin change was inversely associated with erythropoietic change, which was confirmed by an increase in the hepcidin-to-ERFE ratio after transfusion. Age was the main predictor of serum ERFE, followed by EPO, transfusion frequencies, and ferritin. We found ERFE to be a highly sensitive indicator of erythroid activity in β-TM and that the hepcidin-to-ERFE ratio after transfusion may be used as an appropriateness index of serum hepcidin regulation relative to the degree of erythropoiesis., (© 2022 British Society for Haematology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Sedentary lifestyle and dyslipidemia are well-recognized risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Changes in blood lipid profile (total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein [HDL], and low-density lipoprotein [LDL]) due to the exercise may be beneficial for decreasing CVD-related events. In this review we aimed to investigate the effect of different types of exercise on lipid profile components in people with different health conditions and age ranges. A systematic search was performed covering PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for English articles from 2010 until November 2021. Finally, 31 studies were included in our study. Results showed that exercise in younger individuals sometimes resulted in no significant changes of any of the variables or some of them; however, efficient improvement was observed in all studies of older and middle-age groups. In terms of health condition and gender; healthy individuals, overweight people, subjects with type 2 diabetes and obesity, and male participants found to have benefited more from the exercise. In patients with chronic kidney diseases lipid profile improvement was not significant. The cardiac rehabilitation program, particularly comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation, proved to be more beneficial than exercise alone in the case of cardiovascular patients and those at elevated risk of CVD. In conclusion exercise is beneficial in terms of improving lipid profile but for younger population, and those with kidney problems and CVD patients, more further preparations are needed under the supervision of experts in the field of sports and medicine to achieve the desired result. The emergence of a novel coronavirus, COVID-19, in December 2019 led to a global pandemic with more than 170 million confirmed infections and more than 6 million deaths (by July 2022). Studies have shown that infection with SARS-CoV-2 in cancer patients has a higher mortality rate than in people without cancer. Here, we have reviewed the evidence showing that gut microbiota plays an important role in health and is linked to colorectal cancer development. Recently, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and their derivative exosome have become a promising approach in the context of liver diseases therapy, in particular, acute liver failure (ALF). In addition to their differentiation into hepatocytes in vivo, which is partially involved in liver regeneration, MSCs support liver regeneration as a result of their appreciated competencies, such as antiapoptotic, immunomodulatory, antifibrotic, and also antioxidant attributes. Further, MSCs-secreted molecules inspire hepatocyte proliferation in vivo, facilitating damaged tissue recovery in ALF. Given these properties, various MSCs-based approaches have evolved and resulted in encouraging outcomes in ALF animal models and also displayed safety and also modest efficacy in human studies, providing a new avenue for ALF therapy. Irrespective of MSCs-derived exosome, MSCs-based strategies in ALF include administration of native MSCs, genetically modified MSCs, pretreated MSCs, MSCs delivery using biomaterials, and also MSCs in combination with and other therapeutic molecules or modalities. Herein, we will deliver an overview regarding the therapeutic effects of the MSCs and their exosomes in ALF. The progress of genetic engineering in the 1970s brought about a paradigm shift in genome editing technology. The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) system is a flexible means to target and modify particular DNA sequences in the genome. Several applications of CRISPR/Cas9 are presently being studied in cancer biology and oncology to provide vigorous site-specific gene editing to enhance its biological and clinical uses. CRISPR's flexibility and ease of use have enabled the prompt achievement of almost any preferred alteration with greater efficiency and lower cost than preceding modalities. Also, CRISPR/Cas9 technology has recently been applied to improve the safety and efficacy of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapies and defeat tumor cell resistance to conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Objectives: We aimed to determine a threshold cutoff for hepcidin, ferritin, and the hepcidin-to-ferritin ratio in the diagnosis of liver fibrosis caused by iron overload in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV)-free ß-thalassemia major patients ., Methods: This 1:1-matched case-control study included 102 individuals (3-30 yr.); 51 ß-thalassemia major patients with iron overload , and 51 apparently healthy individuals., Results: The highest areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC-ROCs) for the diagnosis of patients vs. controls had overlapping 95% confidence intervals (CIs): serum hepcidin (0.758; 0.64-0.87; P ˂ 0.001), serum ferritin (1.000; 1.00-1.00; P˂0.001), and the hepcidin/ferritin ratio (1.000; 1.00-1.00; P˂0.001). For differentiation of patients with liver fibrosis stages of F0-F1 vs. F2-F4 and F0-F1 vs. F3-F4, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) with P-values˂0.001 were the only statistically significant parameters, while the AUC-ROCs of the hepcidin/ferritin ratio (0.631, P=0.188 and 0.684, P=0.098) exhibited 90% and 89.5% sensitivity, respectively, in staging liver fibrosis., Conclusion: Our results showed that the hepcidin/ferritin ratio is as effective as the APRI and maybe a better predictor for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis and discriminating its stages, with excellent sensitivity and specificity compared to its components., (Copyright © 2021 Société française de transfusion sanguine (SFTS). Hepcidin (HEPC) hormone production is expected to be elevated in cases accompanying iron overload, but the opposite impact of ineffective erythropoiesis in β-thalassemia major (β-TM) patients overrides this effect. The role of the HEPC-to-ferritin (FER) ratio and its components in iron metabolism along with their diagnostic cutoff values, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in β-TM patients with iron overload, were examined in this study. This was a 1:1 case-control study with 120 participants, ages ranging from 2 to 30 years of both sexes, who were assigned into two groups: 60 β-TM patients with iron overload, and a control group, comprising 60 healthy individuals matched by gender and age. In the present study, we found slightly elevated serum HEPC concentration (21.9 ng/mL) compared to the controls (9.9 ng/mL), which was not statistically significant ( p  =0.1), and the median HEPC-to-FER ratio of the cases was significantly lower than the controls, with the median case-control difference of (-0.366; p  < 0.001). Our results revealed a statistically significant impact ( p  < 0.001) of mean age on the serum HEPC level with the inverse linear correlation of (-0.487, p  < 0.001). The area under the curve of the HEPC-to-FER ratio was 0.999 and the optimum cutoff value was 0.046 ng/mL ( p  < 0.001) with 100.0% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity. In conclusion, we found that serum HEPC-to-FER ratio, with an accuracy of 99.2%, may serve as an excellent index for the diagnosis of iron overload in β-TM patients differentiating them from nonthalassemic controls.

Recently, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) therapy has become a promising therapeutic strategy with encouraging therapeutic outcomes due to their durable anti-tumor effects. Though, tumor inherent or acquired resistance to ICIs accompanied with treatment-related toxicities hamper their clinical utility. Overall, about 60-70% of patients (e.g., melanoma and lung cancer) who received ICIs show no objective response to intervention. The resistance to ICIs mainly caused by alterations in the tumor microenvironment (TME), which in turn, supports angiogenesis and also blocks immune cell antitumor activities, facilitating tumor cells' evasion from host immunosurveillance. Thereby, it has been supposed and also validated that combination therapy with ICIs and other therapeutic means, ranging from chemoradiotherapy to targeted therapies as well as cancer vaccines, can capably compromise tumor resistance to immune checkpoint blocked therapy.
