Abstract: The main objective of this deliverable is to describe the first results of the monitoring activities in R&I Peers related to the five pillars of Responsible Research and Innovation that European Commission identified for RRI [1], i.e. Ethics, Gender equality, Open access, Public engagement, Science education, as planned in the task "T7.4 RRI validation check". For this purpose, a survey was defined and carried out. This survey collects data for the validation check concerning the adoption of the principles of Responsible Research and innovation during the activities of the project. This is following the Task 7.4 "RRI validation check" of "WP7- Dissemination and impact creation". This task is monitoring that the five pillars of Responsible Research and Innovation are kept accordingly to the definitions and indications of the European Commission. In particular, CNR defined a first version of the survey related to the inclusion of RRI in the R&I-PEERS project, based on the experiences, knowledge and concepts from other RRI projects such as the MARINA project. Specifically, CNR put also a particular focus on ethical issues. The draft survey was shared with CNTI, DLI, MIGAL, ZRC SAZU and UNISA that contributed in revising the draft, providing their specific contribution with respect to the Gender, Open access, Public engagement and Science education. All the members of the R&I-PEERS consortium filled-in the questionnaire for the survey and, data were analysed by CNR. The results of this analysis are presented in the section related to the "Analysis of the collected data". In particular, section 3.1 contains the questionnaire partners that are implementing the GEP, while section 3.2 contains the questionnaire for partners that are not implementing the GEP in R&I -PEERS. Indeed, the questionnaire addressed to the partners that are implementing the GEP in R&I-PEERS consists of two parts: "Part 1 - Responsible Research and Innovation in the R&I-PEERS project (not directly connected to the activities carried out in the GEP), related to your organisation" and "Part 2 - Responsible Research and Innovation in the R&I-PEERS project, related to your GEP activities". The R&IPEERS partners that are not implementing the GEP are asked to fill in the questionnaire containing one part only about "Responsible Research and Innovation in the R&I-PEERS project, related to your organisation

Abstract: Hydrological models are widely used to characterize, understand and manage hydrosystems. Lumped parameter models are of particular interest in karst environments given the complexity and heterogeneity of these systems. There is a multitude of lumped parameter modelling approaches, which can make it difficult for a manager or researcher to choose. We therefore conducted a comparison of two lumped parameter modelling approaches: artificial neural networks (ANNs) and reservoir models. We investigate five karst systems in the Mediterranean and Alpine regions with different characteristics in terms of climatic conditions, hydrogeological properties and data availability. We compare the results of ANN and reservoir modelling approaches using several performance criteria over different hydrological periods. The results show that both ANNs and reservoir models can accurately simulate karst spring discharge but also that they have different advantages and drawbacks: (i) ANN models are very flexible regarding the format and amount of input data, (ii) reservoir models can provide good results even with a few years of relevant discharge in the calibration period and (iii) ANN models seem robust for reproducing high-flow conditions, while reservoir models are superior in reproducing low-flow conditions. However, both modelling approaches struggle to reproduce extreme events (droughts, floods), which is a known problem in hydrological modelling. For research purposes, ANN models have been shown to be useful for identifying recharge areas and delineating catchments, based on insights into the input data. Reservoir models are adapted to understand the hydrological functioning of a system by studying model structure and parameters.

Abstract: International audience; Settlement patterns and path networks represent different but connected perspectives on human-environment interaction through movement, manifested through the appropriation and organisation of landscape by societies. Settlement patterns and path networks evolve with unharmonized temporalities, but in constant interaction which render the territorial studies very challenging. Remote sensing, GIS and 3D modeling have greatly contributed to our knowledge and understanding of movement as encapsulated in routes, but the methods employed make it difficult to connect with theories of engagement through travel. Pragmatically, it is difficult to integrate LiDAR-detected traces of pathways, which conflate temporalities, with network analysis techniques and settlement pattern analysis which focus on changing patterns over time.This paper argues for an integrated approach. After a general review of the main methods developed to detect and model movement, pathways and networks of transportation, a conceptual framework will be presented that will enable us to make the connection between the material evidence of routes and various computer-based models of movement, and thus better understand territorial dynamics. This conceptual framework investigates connectivity at various spatiotemporal scales. Most importantly, it creates an explicit framework for research using both detection and modelling-led approaches. A comparison of regional case studies from the literature will be presented to discuss the balance between general models and specific contextualisation.

Abstract: International audience; Sequences of lake sediments often form long and continuous records that may be sensitive recorders of seismic shaking. A multi-proxy analysis of Lake Bohinj sediments associated with a wellconstrained chronology was conducted to reconstruct Holocene seismic activity in the Julian Alps (Slovenia). A seismic reflection survey and sedimentological analyses identified 29 homogenite-type deposits related to mass wasting deposits. The most recent homogenites can be linked to historical regional earthquakes (i.e. 1348 AD, 1511 AD and 1690 AD) with strong epicentral intensity [greater than ‘damaging’ (VIII) on the Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale]. The correlation between the historic earthquake dataset and the homogenites identified in a core isolated from local stream inputs, allows interpretation of all similar deposits as earthquake related. This work extends the earthquake chronicle of the last 6600 years in this area with a total of 29 events recorded. The early Holocene sedimentary record is disturbed by a seismic event (6617 ± 94 yr cal BP) that reworked previously deposited sediment and led to a thick sediment deposit identified in the seismic survey. The period between 3500 to 2000 yr cal BP is characterized by a major destabilization in the watershed by human activities that led to increases in erosion and sedimentation rates. This change increased the lake’s sensitivity to recording an earthquake (earthquake-sensitivity threshold index) with the occurrence of 72 turbidite-type deposits over this period. The high turbidite frequency identified could be the consequence of this change in lake earthquake sensitivity and thus these turbidites could be triggered by earthquake shaking, as other origins are discarded. This study illustrates why it is not acceptable to propose a return period for seismic activity recorded in lake sediment if the sedimentation rate varies significantly.

We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1° × 1°) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the ‘Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites’ (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. Abstract: Human activity has fundamentally altered wildfire on Earth, creating serious consequences for human health, global biodiversity, and climate change. However, it remains difficult to predict fire interactions with land use, management, and climate change, representing a serious knowledge gap and vulnerability. We used expert assessment to combine opinions about past and future fire regimes from 98 wildfire researchers. We asked for quantitative and qualitative assessments of the frequency, type, and implications of fire regime change from the beginning of the Holocene through the year 2300. Respondents indicated that direct human activity was already influencing wildfires locally since at least ~12,000 years BP, though natural climate variability remained the dominant driver of fire regime until around 5000 years BP. Responses showed a ten-fold increase in the rate of wildfire regime change during the last 250 years compared with the rest of the Holocene, corresponding first with the intensification and extensification of land use and later with anthropogenic climate change. Looking to the future, fire regimes were predicted to intensify, with increases in fire frequency, severity, and/or size in all biomes except grassland ecosystems. Fire regime showed quite different climate sensitivities across biomes, but the likelihood of fire regime change increased with higher greenhouse gas emission scenarios for all biomes. Biodiversity, carbon storage, and other ecosystem services were predicted to decrease for most biomes under higher emission scenarios. We present recommendations for adaptation and mitigation under emerging fire regimes, concluding that management options are seriously constrained under higher emission scenarios.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest. Abstract: International audience; The integration of Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) survey into archaeological research and cultural heritage management has substantially added to our knowledge of archaeological remains in forested areas, and is changing our understanding of how these landscapes functioned in the past. Further, the results of ALS-based surveys of woodlands can now potentially be incorporated into micro-regional and landscape scale studies which rely on survey data, making an important contribution to our understanding of settlement patterns and land use - but doing so requires us to recognize and manage a host of biases inherent in ALS-based survey data. While many types of archaeological remains manifest as micro-topography, several important classes of features commonly appear as standing remains. The identification of these remains is important for archaeological prospection surveys based on ALS data. Standing structures in mixed scenes with vegetation are not well addressed by standard classification approaches. In this paper we propose an approach to the identification of these structures in the point cloud based on multi-scale measures of roughness, and measures of local density and normal orientation. We demonstrate this approach using discrete-return ALS data collected in the Franche-Comté region of France.

Abstract: Performance criteria play a key role in the calibration and evaluation of hydrological models and have been extensively developed and studied, but some of the most used criteria still have unknown pitfalls. This study set out to examine counterbalancing errors, which are inherent to the Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE) and its variants. A total of nine performance criteria – including the KGE and its variants, as well as the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and the modified index of agreement (d1) – were analysed using synthetic time series and a real case study. Results showed that, when assessing a simulation, the score of the KGE and some of its variants can be increased by concurrent overestimation and underestimation of discharge. These counterbalancing errors may favour bias and variability parameters, therefore preserving an overall high score of the performance criteria. As bias and variability parameters generally account for two-thirds of the weight in the equation of performance criteria such as the KGE, this can lead to an overall higher criterion score without being associated with an increase in model relevance. We recommend using (i) performance criteria that are not or less prone to counterbalancing errors (d1, modified KGE, non-parametric KGE, diagnostic efficiency) and/or (ii) scaling factors in the equation to reduce the influence of relative parameters.

Abstract: International audience; Archaeologists have long considered intervisibility essential to understanding settlement patterns and landscape structure. The idea of intervisibility as a driver stems from the premise that, across epochs and cultures, (in)visibility is manipulated for communication, control and sometimes defense. For these reasons a broad suite of viewshed analyses were explored by archaeologists, primarily using GIS, from the 1980s.Many of these studies suggest that vegetation plays an important role in blocking, altering, and framing sightlines, but these suggestions remain relatively unexplored. The increasing availability of airborne laser scanning (ALS) datasets invites us to revisit these propositions. ALS data allows us to consider -with relative ease- multiple vegetation scenarios in which we vary spatial distributions and canopy structure to understand potential impacts on specific visual networks.The approach illustrated in this paper employs ‘rapid initial visual assessment’ of the elements of intervisibility analyses. Multiple 3D scenes are built using sightline vectors, DTMs, and vegetation models. These scenes allow us to immediately understand the impact of terrain and different vegetation states. This rapid exploratory protocol lets us establish a generalized chronology of the changes in extents of woodlands based on presumed or known visual networks. Because calculations are not computationally expensive, quickly modeling many scenarios is practical- opening the possibility of new approaches to visual networks.In this paper our approach is demonstrated use the ‘ceinture de fortifications’ constructed around Besançon in 19th century. Because the state of forest at the time of construction, and the intentions of the architects to create a visual network are well documented, the ceinture provides an ideal case study. We then consider the visual dynamics of two castles and a citadel, constructed and active in the Medieval and Early Modern periods, with reference to historical evidence for competition and cooperation between their respective communities.

Abstract: The integration of Airborne Laser Scanning survey into archaeological research and cultural heritage management has substantially added to our knowledge of archaeological remains in forested areas, and is changing our understanding of how these landscapes functioned in the past. While many types of archaeological remains manifest as micro-topography, several important classes of features commonly appear as standing remains. The identification of these remains is important for archaeological prospection surveys based on ALS data, and typically represent structures from the Roman, Medieval and early Modern periods. Standing structures in mixed scenes with vegetation are not well addressed by standard classification approaches developed to identify bare earth (terrain), individual trees or plot characteristics, or buildings (roofed structures). In this paper we propose an approach to the identification of these structures in the point cloud based on multi-scale measures of local density, roughness, and normal orientation. We demonstrate this approach using discrete-return ALS data collected in the Franche-Comte region of France at a nominal point density of 8 pts/m2, a resolution which, in coming years, will become increasingly available to archaeologists through government supported mapping schemes.

Abstract: International audience; The value of lidar data for the study of forested areas has been repeatedly demonstrated, recording large numbers of previously unknown sites and features where most survey methods are ineffective. However, the question of the value of lidar in cultivated areas already investigated through historical mapping and archaeological studies such as fieldwalking survey, aerial photographic survey and excavation remains open. This paper summarizes the results of recent research in the open and heavily cultivated Mauguio region of southern France and reflects on the challenges of integrating information from lidar survey into an existing body of knowledge on the development of an agricultural landscape.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents visualisation techniques of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for visual detection of archaeological features. The methods commonly used in archaeology are reviewed and improvements are suggested. One straightforward technique that has so far not been used in archaeologye the shift method e is presented. The main purpose of this article is to compare and evaluate different visualisation methods. Two conclusions have been reached. Where a single method must be chosen e for printing or producing digital images for non-professionals e the use of sky view factor or slope gradient is endorsed, both presented in greyscale. Otherwise interpreters should choose different techniques on different terrain types: shift on flat terrain, sky viewfactor on mixed terrain, slope gradient on sloped terrain and sky view factor (preferably as a composite image with slope gradient) on rugged terrain.

Abstract: As part of the ArchaeDyn project, a workgroup was formed to coordinate the development, implementation and application of methods and tools for spatial analysis. The workgroup's activities were directed at various problems. The first was to construct a grid common to all the workgroups and to homogenize the study areas used by the different workgroups in their databases. The 'confidence maps' method was suggested for assessing the quality and quantity of information inventoried in the databases. Confidence maps are produced from representation and reliability maps by simple map algebra and they can be considered as 'masks' for interpreting spatial analysis results. Finally, the research team tested, developed and adapted various statistical and geostatistical methods for defining the spatial indicators of stability over time (sustainability / permanent rhythms, changes, mobility / trajectories). This Chapter presents several exploratory analyses made within this framework.

Abstract: International audience; This poster was presented at the 2010 Landscape Archaeology Conference in Amsterdam (26-28 January) by Laure Nuninger and Rachel Opitz. It shows some early results from the archaeological study of a lidar survey conducted around Besançon (Franche-Comté, France). This survey is part of the LIEPPEC project, a new multidisciplinary study of the landscape surrounding and shaping this centre, which has been urbanized since the Iron Age. The area surrounding Besancon now largely forested, resulting in a dependence on the interpretation of the lidar model to guide field prospection. The poster focuses on the history of two areas: one forested (Forêt de Chailluz) and one regularly inundated (Marais Saone), where traces of past activities are apparent. These discoveries provoke methodological and thematic questions. A recursive process between the results of fieldwalking and the manipulation of the lidar model allows us to explore the interpretation of microtopography in archaeological and geomorphological terms.

Abstract: International audience; Romanization was a gradual and complex phenomenon. It is often investigated in urban settings where Roman power was ostentatious. Where the process has been examined in rural contexts, research has focused primarily on the most prominent production and land management facilities, such as villae or centuriations. More rarely is use made of the overall dynamics of the rural structures under study and of the system of settlement through which urban and rural areas interact in synergy. It is this last approach that is highlighted in this study. By examining settlement dynamics within a broad time frame, from the Iron Age to the 2nd century AD, this paper seeks to clarify how the Roman system of organization adapted to what was already a well organized indigenous set-up, by amplifying a dynamic that had been primed well before the conquest, probably by Phocaean commercial impetus. We attempt to show how the native population adopted and adapted certain Roman ways of doing things in order to control and develop their territory. Far from following on from one another, the two facets of the process interacted, making for a complex picture of Romanization and of its failures and successes.

Abstract: Inventory data used in archaeology are often incomplete and heterogeneous. In the framework of the ArchaeDyn program, a method has been proposed to evaluate heterogeneity in archaeological inventories. The purpose of this work is to create a validation tool to interpret the results. This tool is called a "confidence map" and is produced by combining representation and reliability maps. The first step consists in generating representation maps to describe the clustering of archaeological items. The second step is based on reliability maps. Data providers are asked to define and outline the level of reliability of their data. Finally, representation and reliability layers are combined using map algebra. The resulting maps allow for the comparison and analysis of data confidence

Abstract: International audience; Geographical information systems (GIS) are becoming a common tool in applications that involve spatial objects and relations. In the last years the internet technology is moving GIS towards web based applications, simplifying the interaction between users and GIS, and at the same time reducing the ownership and maintenance costs. In the framework of caENTI we are developing a Web Mapping solution to present selected socio-economic indicators of European Union in the form of Interactive map. Indicators will be presented in different levels of detail (from NUTS0 to LAU2). In the time of writing this article Interactive map is still in development phase. The development software has been already selected and tested. However the selection and processing of data and metadata is still not completed. Map built on Web Mapping software GeoServer and JavaScriptbased web applications (including the Map Tools library OpenLayers) are in the final stages of development.

Abstract: Colloque international du programme ArchaeDyn; This poster presents a methodology set up to define agronomical areas and to offer hypotheses regarding possible past land uses. Instead of classifying study areas as “good” or “bad” land, a precise description of the soils was used. The description of the physical characteristics of soils also helps to compare different soil classifications. This poster also shows initial attempts for practical application through two case studies in which appropriate geographical data (i.e. soil maps) are lacking. We propose to deal with this problem by using ancillary data (geological map and Landsat images); Ce poster présente une méthode de définition des terroirs permettant de proposer des hypothèses quant aux possibilités de leurs utilisations par les sociétés anciennes. Au lieu de classer les espaces étudiés en “bonne” ou “mauvaise” terre, les sols sont précisément décrits. La description des caractéristiques physiques des sols aide également à comparer différentes classifications des sols. Abstract: Colloque international du programme ArchaeDyn; The aim of Workgroup 2, “Settlement patterns and territories”, is to apprehend the intensity, stability and the modalities of the occupation of rural space over the long term (from 800 BC to 800 AD) using indices related to settlements. Eleven study areas in the south and centre of France and in Slovenia are involved in this study. In order to allow interregional comparisons, a common protocol was defined to homogenise the data and assess their reliability. Two types of indices are used: quantitative and chronological indices which show the settlement intensity and dynamics; and qualitative indices which express the hierarchical typology of the settlement. The combination and spatialisation of these indices allow us to apprehend the structure of settlement patterns and to locate the areas which were more or less intensely occupied, in a more or less durable and stable manner during the 16 centuries under consideration; L'atelier 2 « Peuplement et territoires » a pour objectif d'appréhender, à partir d'indicateurs relatifs au peuplement, l'intensité, la stabilité et les modalités d'occupation de l'espace rural dans la longue durée (de 800 av. n. è. à 800 de n. è.). Onze zones-atelier sont concernées par l'étude, dans le Sud et le Centre de la France, et en Slovénie. Afin d'autoriser les comparaisons interrégionales, un travail d'homogénéisation et d'évaluation de la fiabilité des données a été réalisé. Abstract: This presentation describes modelling of the ancient paths as a tool for settlement pattern studies. The path modelling methodology is a stimulating tool, which is complementary to the hierarchical approaches in the landscape archaeology, since it contributes to the understanding of the spatial relation between archaeological sites. This methodology is used to simulate the theoretical movements between settlements at several periods and, therefore, to look at the evolution of the regional path network. With this approach, the evolution of the settlement pattern is analysed in a study area in south-east of France, during Iron Age and late roman period (from the 5th c. BC to the 5th c. AD). The existing methodology of raster based modelling was enhanced by enlarging the set of path reconstitution parameters (visibility) and by modelling in two scales. The proposed model is based on parameters derived merely from the relief because its changes should be insignificant even over a long period

Abstract: International audience; Geographical information systems are becoming a common tool in applications that involve spatial objects and relations, including heritage management. In the last years the internet technology is moving GIS towards web based applications, simplifying the interaction between users and GIS, and at the same time reducing the ownership and maintenance costs. Archaeology is forced to incorporate the activities of protection, investigation and presentation to new tendencies of contemporary open society. It has to constantly renew and modernize its informational infrastructure with the purpose of more effective cultural heritage management and as an effective base for research. Internet based databases that include mapping capabilities can provide a useful and efficient way of storing and disseminating data and results to the public and researchers. At the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts an internet based mapping application for Archaeological Sites and Monuments Records of Slovenia (ARKAS) has been designed and implemented.

Abstract: International audience; A vertebra collected from the Jurassic non-marine Khlong Min Formation of southern Thailand is referred to the family Euhelopodidae, a group of sauropod dinosaurs that apparently was endemic to eastern Asia during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, at a time when that part of the world was isolated from other land masses. The occurrence of a euhelopodid in the Jurassic of the Shan–Thai Block supports the idea of a collision of the Shan–Thai Block with the Indochina Block, thus establishing connections with ‘mainland Asia', early in the Mesozoic, probably before the Jurassic.

Abstract: This paper proposes an ontological approach to connect the archaeological topographic evidence for movement in the landscape which can be derived from interpretation and spatial analysis of airborne lidar data with models of movement derived from modeling exercises such as Agent Based Modelling or Cost Path Modelling. This computational ontology enables the investigation of movement and its topographic manifestations in the landscape at various spatio-temporal scales. It creates an explicit framework for accessing meaningful information about movement generated through research using both detection and modelling-led approaches. Developing explicit computational frameworks to provide meaningful context is critical, particularly as remote sensing and modelling projects increase in scale and complexity. The process of developing a computational ontology exposes a deeper underlying issue, and one applicable to many topics we address as archaeologists: if we begin to unpack the concept of ‘movement’ it is readily apparent that it is a complex phenomenon, like many human habits, and studying it requires drawing together a variety of types of physical evidence and multiple, often competing, theoretical models of human processes and practices. If we wish to make archaeological ‘data’ on movement available, how do we create appropriate contextual information – really useful metadata – so that this data can be incorporated into the variety of studies for which knowledge of movement is relevant? This is essentially the challenge posed broadly by the FAIR principles, and in particular by the principle of interoperability, which suggests that we “use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language for knowledge representation”. Rather than simply seeking to fulfill the requirements of an arbitrary standard, attempting to meet the challenge of interoperability provides an impetus and opportunity to attempt to bridge the gap between data and model, and to reconsider how we conceive and represent knowledge in archaeological digital data and modelling projects. This kind of computational ontology, we suggest, can serve as the key for making the data from both these sources actually FAIR.

Abstract: International audience; The use of topographic airborne LiDAR data has become an essential part of archaeological prospection, and the need for an archaeology-specific data processing workflow is well known. It is therefore surprising that little attention has been paid to the key element of processing: an archaeology-specific DEM. Accordingly, the aim of this paper is to describe an archaeology-specific DEM in detail, provide a tool for its automatic precision assessment, and determine the appropriate grid resolution. We define an archaeology-specific DEM as a subtype of DEM, which is interpolated from ground points, buildings, and four morphological types of archaeological features. We introduce a confidence map (QGIS plug-in) that assigns a confidence level to each grid cell. This is primarily used to attach a confidence level to each archaeological feature, which is useful for detecting data bias in archaeological interpretation. Confidence mapping is also an effective tool for identifying the optimal grid resolution for specific datasets. Beyond archaeological applications, the confidence map provides clear criteria for segmentation, which is one of the unsolved problems of DEM interpolation. All of these are important steps towards the general methodological maturity of airborne LiDAR in archaeology, which is our ultimate goal.; L'utilisation de données LiDAR aéroportées topographiques est devenue un élément essentiel de la prospection archéologique, et la nécessité d'un flux de travail de traitement des données spécifique à l'archéologie est bien connue. Il est donc surprenant que peu d'attention ait été accordée à l'élément clé du traitement: un MNE spécifique à l'archéologie. En conséquence, le but de cet article est de décrire en détail un MNE spécifique à l'archéologie, de fournir un outil pour son évaluation automatique de la précision et de déterminer la résolution de grille appropriée. Nous définissons un DEM spécifique à l'archéologie comme un sous-type de DEM, qui est interpolé à partir de points au sol, de bâtiments et de quatre types morphologiques de caractéristiques archéologiques. Nous introduisons une carte de confiance (plug-in QGIS) qui attribue un niveau de confiance à chaque cellule de la grille. Abstract: International audience; The use of topographic airborne LiDAR data has become an essential part of archaeological prospection. However, as a step towards theoretically aware, impactful, and reproducible research, a more rigorous and transparent method of data processing is required. To this end, we set out to create a processing pipeline for archaeology-specific point cloud processing and derivation of products that are optimized for general-purpose data. The proposed pipeline improves on ground and building point cloud classification. The main area of innovation in the proposed pipeline is raster grid interpolation. We have improved the state-of-the-art by introducing a hybrid interpolation technique that combines inverse distance weighting with a triangulated irregular network with linear interpolation. State-of-the-art solutions for enhanced visualizations are included and essential metadata and paradata are also generated. In addition, we have introduced a QGIS plug-in that implements the pipeline as a one-step process. It reduces the manual workload by 75 to 90 percent and requires no special skills other than a general familiarity with the QGIS environment. It is intended that the pipeline and tool will contribute to the white-boxing of archaeology-specific airborne LiDAR data processing. In discussion, the role of data processing in the knowledge production process is explored.; L'utilisation de données topographiques LiDAR aéroportées est devenue un élément essentiel de la prospection archéologique. Cependant, comme étape vers une recherche théoriquement consciente, percutante et reproductible, une méthode de traitement des données plus rigoureuse et transparente est nécessaire. À cette fin, nous avons entrepris de créer un pipeline de traitement pour le traitement de nuages de points spécifiques à l'archéologie et la dérivation de produits optimisés pour les données à usage général. Le pipeline proposé améliore la classification des nuages de points au sol et des bâtiments. Le principal domaine d'innovation du pipeline proposé est l'interpolation de grille de trame. Nous avons amélioré l'état de l'art en introduisant une technique d'interpolation hybride qui combine une pondération de distance inverse avec un réseau irrégulier triangulé avec interpolation linéaire. Des solutions de pointe pour des visualisations améliorées sont incluses et des métadonnées et paradonnées essentielles sont également générées. De plus, nous avons introduit un plug-in QGIS qui implémente le pipeline en tant que processus en une seule étape. Abstract: International audience; Airborne LiDAR is a widely accepted tool for archaeological prospection. Over the last decade an archaeology-specific data processing workflow has been evolving, ranging from raw data acquisition and processing, point cloud processing and product derivation to archaeological interpretation, dissemination and archiving. Currently, though, there is no agreement on the specific steps or terminology. This workflow is an interpretative knowledge production process that must be documented as such to ensure the intellectual transparency and accountability required for evidence-based archaeological interpretation. However, this is rarely the case, and there are no accepted schemas, let alone standards, to do so. As a result, there is a risk that the data processing steps of the workflow will be accepted as a black box process and its results as ``hard data''. The first step in documenting a scientific process is to define it. Therefore, this paper provides a critical review of existing archaeology-specific workflows for airborne LiDAR-derived topographic data processing, resulting in an 18-step workflow with consistent terminology. Its novelty and significance lies in the fact that the existing comprehensive studies are outdated and the newer ones focus on selected aspects of the workflow. Based on the updated workflow, a good practice example for its documentation is presented.

Abstract: Wildfire occurrence is influenced by climate, vegetation and human activities. A key challenge for understanding the risk of fires is quantifying the mediating effect of vegetation on fire regimes. Here, we explore the relative importance of Holocene land cover, land use, dominant functional forest type, and climate dynamics on biomass burning in temperate and boreo-nemoral regions of central and eastern Europe over the past 12 kyr. We used an extensive data set of Holocene pollen and sedimentary charcoal records, in combination with climate simulations and statistical modelling. Biomass burning was highest during the early Holocene and lowest during the mid-Holocene in all three ecoregions (Atlantic, continental and boreo-nemoral) but was more spatially variable over the past 3–4 kyr. Although climate explained a significant variance in biomass burning during the early Holocene, tree cover was consistently the highest predictor of past biomass burning over the past 8 kyr. In temperate forests, biomass burning was high at ∼45 % tree cover and decreased to a minimum at between 60 % and 70 % tree cover. In needleleaf-dominated forests, biomass burning was highest at ∼ 60 %–65 % tree cover and steeply declined at >65 % tree cover. Biomass burning also increased when arable lands and grasslands reached ∼ 15 %–20 %, although this relationship was variable depending on land use practice via ignition sources, fuel type and quantities. Higher tree cover reduced the amount of solar radiation reaching the forest floor and could provide moister, more wind-protected microclimates underneath canopies, thereby decreasing fuel flammability. Tree cover at which biomass burning increased appears to be driven by warmer and drier summer conditions during the early Holocene and by increasing human influence on land cover during the late Holocene. We suggest that long-term fire hazard may be effectively reduced through land cover management, given that land cover has controlled fire regimes under the dynamic climates of the Holocene.

Abstract: Five decades ago, a landmark paper in Science titled The Cave Environment heralded caves as ideal natural experimental laboratories in which to develop and address general questions in geology, ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology. Although the 'caves as laboratory' paradigm has since been advocated by subterranean biologists, there are few examples of studies that successfully translated their results into general principles. The contemporary era of big data, modelling tools, and revolutionary advances in genetics and (meta)genomics provides an opportunity to revisit unresolved questions and challenges, as well as examine promising new avenues of research in subterranean biology. Accordingly, we have developed a roadmap to guide future research endeavours in subterranean biology by adapting a well-established methodology of 'horizon scanning' to identify the highest priority research questions across six subject areas. Based on the expert opinion of 30 scientists from around the globe with complementary expertise and of different academic ages, we assembled an initial list of 258 fundamental questions concentrating on macroecology and microbial ecology, adaptation, evolution, and conservation. Subsequently, through online surveys, 130 subterranean biologists with various backgrounds assisted us in reducing our list to 50 top-priority questions. These research questions are broad in scope and ready to be addressed in the next decade. We believe this exercise will stimulate research towards a deeper understanding of subterranean biology and foster hypothesis-driven studies likely to resonate broadly from the traditional boundaries of this field. Abstract: International audience; Mountain grazing and ore processing had a significant impact on the Alpine environment in the last 5000 years, but few studies have so far focused on environmental changes of the south eastern Alps. This study investigates the vegetation history and sedimentary processes in the catchment of Lake Bohinj (Julian Alps, Slovenia), where a 12-m-long core was collected in the central part of the lake. Sediment in the early Holocene section of the core was partially reworked due to a major seismic event dated to 6711–6523 yr cal BP (Rapuc et al. 2018), therefore a detailed palaeoenvironmental reconstruction was performed only for the top 4.4 m of the core. Here the results of mineralogical, sedimentological, geochemical, stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N), and pollen analysis are presented in order to better understand the impact of people (agriculture, grazing, mining) on the environment, and climate-human interactions over the last 6600 years.The results of palynological research suggest that at ca. 6000 yr cal BP Lake Bohinj was surrounded by mixed forest composed of Picea, Abies, deciduous Quercus, with Fagus becoming dominant after ca. 3300 yr cal BP. In the Bronze and especially the Iron Age (3500–2500 yr cal BP), when the region was, according to archaeological data, densely populated, clearing of forests due to agriculture, livestock production and metallurgical activities was detected through Cerealia type pollen, Plantago lanceolata, and the decline of Abies. These activities probably triggered soil erosion recorded as increased sedimentation rates. In the subsequent centuries human impact on the environment continued (increased), but it seems that the watershed was not destabilised again. Several periods of high terrigenous input were recorded at 6100–6000, 5700–5550, 5000–4600, 3900, 3700–3550, 2300–2200 yr cal BP and could be associated with a mobilisation of river inflow from the eastern flysch bearing catchment, due to river migration during periods of wetter climate. These flood patterns match with periods of enhanced flood activity in the wider Alpine region.

42. Science should be open, right?: A survey conducted by the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) on the use of academic literature and open science

Abstract: International audience; What does “open science” mean to researchers? A survey of researchers at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) suggests some interesting conclusions, particularly as far as the humanities are concerned. According to the responses, most of these researchers are in favour of open science as a matter of personal conviction. However, when it comes to publishing their own work, hardly any would consent to being published under some basic conditions of open science (adaptation, commercial use). Furthermore, they do appreciate subscription-based e-libraries, although they admit to using other methods, e.g. “resourcefulness”, to gain access to research papers. They would rather not pay to be published or to acquire an e-article of a fellow researcher. They read predominantly in English, with the second language of their research literature being Slovenian (before any other language). Even the most productive age group (40–50 years of age) write more articles than they perform peer-reviewing. They do not support open reviews, yet they consider peer-reviews to be very important; in their opinion peer-reviewing should be included in their evaluation. The survey and its results are just a minor example from a European country, but they have a very clear and universal message: open science is something yet to be defined.

Abstract: International audience; Lava tubes from Lanzarote Island in the Canary Archipelago commonly show white speleothems that stand out from the black basaltic rock. Mineralogical analyses of the speleothems from El Covón and Chifletera lava tubes show that gypsum is the dominant mineral with minor amounts of halite. Speleothems composed of microcrystalline gypsum (up to 150 μm long) are: coatings, globules, or extensive white powder accumulations covering the tube floor. Those composed of macrocrystalline gypsum with millimetric-size tabular and lenticular crystals are: crusts and stalactites. Uranium series dating of speleothems show ages ranging from 6217 ± 1644 yr to 40,039 ± 4748 yr. δ34S and the δ18O of gypsum speleothems (δ34S is 20.97‰ V-CDT and δ18O is 9.78‰ V-SMOW) is similar to that of sulphate dissolved in seawater. 87Sr/86Sr from speleothems (0.708665–0.708976) suggests that the main source of Ca is seawater, but additional Ca contributions from aeolian dust have reduced the Sr isotope values. These data support the idea that gypsum precipitates in the lava tube by evaporation of marine spray or solutions derived from marine spray. Two probable vias for ions input into the lava tube are considered: 1) sea spray circulating through the lava tube; 2) low-frequency rain infiltration leaching the marine spray salts precipitated at the surface. The constant supply of ions from sea spray, air currents in the cave, and the fast, but partial, evaporation due to the high relative humidity in the lava tube favours accumulation of major amounts of gypsum and subordinately halite. Scarcity of precipitation in the western Canary Islands prevents dissolution of gypsum speleothems.

Abstract: Wildfire occurrence is influenced by climate, vegetation and human activities. A key challenge for understanding fire-climate-vegetation interactions is to quantify the effect vegetation has in mediating fire regime. Here, we explore the relative importance of Holocene land cover and dominant functional forest type, and climate dynamics on biomass burned in temperate and boreo-nemoral regions of Central and Eastern Europe over the past 12 ka BP years. We used an extensive data set of Holocene pollen and sedimentary charcoal records, in combination with climate simulations and novel statistical modelling. Biomass burned was highest during the early Holocene and lowest during the mid Holocene in all three ecoregions, but diverged more markedly over the past 3–4 ka BP. Although the climate was an important driver of fire hazard during the warm and dry early Holocene, tree cover was consistently the strongest predictor of past biomass burning. In temperate forests, biomass burned was high at ~ 45 % tree cover and decreased strongly towards 60 % tree cover. In needleleaf dominated forests, biomass burned was highest at ~ 60–65 % tree cover and abruptly declined at > 65 % tree cover. Biomass burned also increased when arable lands and grasslands reached ~ 15–20 %, although this relationship was highly dynamic depending on land use intensity throughout ignition and fuel type and availability. Our observations cover the full range of Holocene climate variability and land cover changes and illustrates that percentages of land cover is a key predictor of the probability of fire occurrence over timescales of centuries to millennia. We suggest that long-term fire risk may be effectively reduced through land cover management, given that land cover has controlled fire regimes under the dynamic climates of the Holocene.

Abstract: Este artículo contiene 16 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas., Soil degradation by water is a serious environmental problem worldwide, with specific climatic factors being the major causes. We investigated the relationships between synoptic atmospheric patterns (i.e. weather types, WTs) and runoff, erosion and sediment yield throughout the Mediterranean basin by analyzing a large database of natural rainfall events at 68 research sites in 9 countries. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify spatial relationships of the different WTs including three hydro-sedimentary variables: rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield (SY, used to refer to both soil erosion measured at plot scale and sediment yield registered at catchment scale). The results indicated 4 spatial classes of rainfall and runoff: (a) northern sites dependent on North (N) and North West (NW) flows; (b) eastern sites dependent on E and NE flows; (c) southern sites dependent on S and SE flows; and, finally, (d) western sites dependent on W and SW flows. Conversely, three spatial classes are identified for SY characterized by: (a) N and NE flows in northern sites (b) E flows in eastern sites, and (c) Wand SW flows in western sites. Most of the rainfall, runoff and SY occurred during a small number of daily events, and just a few WTs accounted for large percentages of the total. Our results confirm that characterization by WT improves understanding of the general conditions under which runoff and SY occur, and provides useful information for understanding the spatial variability of runoff, and SY throughout the Mediterranean basin. Abstract: Poster; Julian Alps are characterised by a moderate to high seismic activity that has included several destructive earthquakes, such as the 1511 AD “Idrija” earthquake (MSK = X). Accurate assessment of the seismic hazard is required to reduce the high vulnerability of this region. Earthquake shaking may destabilise previously deposited sediment, which slides to the bottom of the lake and formed seismically induced mass wasting deposits (MWD), such as turbidites or homogenites.

Abstract: Parmi d’autres sciences, Balthasar Hacquet (1739/40-1815) se consacra à la géologie et à la géomorphologie, pour utiliser des termes actuels. Son œuvre la plus importante, l’Oryctographia Carniolica (1778-1789) contient de nombreuses descriptions de roches, de minerais, de fossiles, mais aussi de reliefs tant en surface que sous terre. En Carniole où les régions karstiques dominent, il développe longuement les questions relatives à la géologie et à la géomorphologie du Karst. Il propose une classification des montagnes en accordant une place particulière aux Montes secundarii formés de calcaire gris. Parmi les formes de relief, il décrit les poljés, les dolines, les dolines-puits glacio-karstiques sur les plateaux, en signalant les phénomènes d’inversion de températures et de végétation. Il pressent l’évolution des poljés inondés (lacs saisonniers) vers les poljés secs. Pour expliquer l’altération et la dissolution du calcaire, Hacquet prend en compte les différences lithologiques et l’exposition, et c’est pourquoi on l’a tenu pour un précurseur de la géomorphologie climatique de la théorie de la corrosion. Hacquet découvrit aussi la différence entre calcaire et dolomie, qu’il appelait Lapis suillus et qu’il décrivit 13 ans avant Dolomieu. Son intérêt pour le karst l’amena aussi à conduire des recherches sur l’hydrogéologie.Hacquet fondait ses conclusions non seulement sur les observations, mais aussi sur l’expérimentation, dans un contexte scientifique encore marqué par les notions aristotéliciennes.
