Increasing deployment of dense arrays has facilitated detailed structure imaging for tectonic investigation, hazard assessment and resource exploration. Strong velocity heterogeneity and topographic changes have to be considered during passive source imaging. However, it is quite challenging for ray‐based methods, such as Kirchhoff migration or the widely used teleseismic receiver function, to handle these problems. In this study, we propose a 3‐D passive source reverse time migration strategy based on the spectral element method. It is realized by decomposing the time reversal full elastic wavefield into amplitude‐preserved vector P and S wavefields by solving the corresponding weak‐form solutions, followed by a dot‐product imaging condition to get images for the subsurface structures. It enables us to use regional 3‐D migration velocity models and take topographic variations into account, helping us to locate reflectors at more accurate positions than traditional 1‐D model‐based methods, like teleseismic receiver functions. Two synthetic tests are used to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method to handle topographic variations and complex velocity heterogeneities. Furthermore, applications to the Laramie array data using both teleseismic P and S waves enable us to identify several south‐dipping structures beneath the Laramie basin in southeast Wyoming, which are interpreted as the Cheyenne Belt suture zone and agree with, and improve upon previous geological interpretations. SUMMARY: For seismographic stations with short acquisition duration, the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of ambient noise cross-correlation functions (CCFs) are typically low, preventing us from accurately measuring surface wave dispersion curves or waveform characteristics. In addition, with noisy CCFs, it is difficult to extract relatively weak signals such as body waves. In this study, we propose to use local attributes to improve the SNRs of ambient noise CCFs, which allows us to enhance the quality of CCFs for stations with limited acquisition duration. Two local attributes: local cross-correlation and local similarity, are used in this study. The local cross-correlation allows us to extend the dimensionality of daily CCFs with computational costs similar to global cross-correlation. Taking advantage of this extended dimensionality, the local similarity is then used to measure non-stationary similarity between the extended daily CCFs with a reference trace, which enables us to design better stacking weights to enhance coherent features and attenuate incoherent background noises. Ambient noise recorded by several broad-band stations from the USArray in North Texas and Oklahoma, the Superior Province Rifting EarthScope Experiment in Minnesota and Wisconsin and a high-frequency nodal array deployed in the northern Los Angeles basin are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach for improving the SNR of CCFs. The quadratic Wasserstein (W2) metric has been proposed as a promising misfit function to mitigate cycle‐skipping phenomena in full‐waveform inversion. Mathematically, we demonstrate that the smoothness of the W2‐based adjoint source is two orders of magnitude higher than that based on L2‐norm, which guarantees a larger convergence radius of related inverse problems. However, the oscillatory characteristics of seismic signals and subsequent operations of transforming them into probability densities would decrease the accuracy of the optimal transport map T(t) and exacerbate the nonconvexity of the misfit function. To tackle these challenges, we propose the concept of prescribed direction indicator, which indicates the properly matching direction from predictions to observations, in order to correct inaccurate T(t). 1D synthetic examples suggest that reasonable bijection can be constructed through the proposed method. Numerical experiments demonstrate that it works well during optimization procedures, including enlarging the convergence radius of the inverse problem, improving the computational efficiency and enhancing the reliability of inversion results. However, the traditional L2‐norm‐based method often falls into a local minimum due to the well known cycle‐skipping problem. To address this issue, a novel technique named the Quadratic Wasserstein Metric has been proposed, which yields smoother and more reliable results. Nevertheless, a challenge persists regarding the low precision in calculating the optimal transport map. To counteract this problem, we have introduced a tool called the "Prescribed Direction Indicator," which allows us to correct our calculations of the transport map and assist us in identifying the appropriate alignment between predictions and observations. With numerical synthetic experiments, we prove its superiority to the traditional Wasserstein metric in handling seismic inversions across a variety of scales, from small and local to global problems. The pseudo-differential operator with symbol | k |α has been widely used in seismic modelling and imaging when involving attenuation, anisotropy and one-way wave equation, which is usually calculated using the pseudo-spectral method. For large-scale problems, applying high-dimensional Fourier transforms to solve the wave equation that includes pseudo-differential operators is much more expensive than finite-difference approaches, and it is not suitable for parallel computing with domain decomposition. To mitigate this difficulty, we present a truncated space-domain convolution method to efficiently compute the pseudo-differential operator |$\sqrt{-\nabla ^2}$|⁠ , and then apply it to viscoacoustic reverse-time migration. Although |$\sqrt{-\nabla ^2}$| is theoretically non-local in the space domain, we take the limited frequency band of seismic data into account, and constrain the approximated convolution stencil to a finite length. The convolution coefficients are computed by solving a least-squares inverse problem in the wavenumber domain. In addition, we exploit the symmetry of the resulting convolution stencil and develop a fast spatial convolution algorithm. The applications of the proposed method in Q -compensated reverse-time migration demonstrate that it is a good alternative to the pseudo-spectral method for computing the pseudo-differential operator |$\sqrt{-\nabla ^2}$|⁠ , with almost the same accuracy but much higher efficiency. High-precision ages of Cenozoic volcanic rocks in northeast China are widely reported recently. However, the systematic analysis of spatio-temporal distribution of Cenozoic volcanism, which is important for reconstructing and constraining regional tectonic evolution, is still limited. Here, we collected published geochronological data from more than 400 Cenozoic volcanic samples in northeast China. Combined with field observations of volcanic rock samples and three valid 40Ar-39Ar geochronological data obtained in this study, we compile geochronological data in northeast China and explore a new spatio-temporal distribution pattern for the Cenozoic volcanism in order to constrain geodynamic models for northeast China. Our results show that the Cenozoic volcanism in northeast China has a horseshoe-shaped distribution, and the volcanism almost existed from Paleocene to Quaternary, which can be roughly divided into six volcanic belts. Our results suggest that the volcanism in this region is centred on around the Songliao Basin, then migrates eastward, and eventually has end up with a series of intense activity around the Songliao Basin. This may be related to the upwelling of the asthenosphere caused by the subduction of the Pacific plate and the opening of the Japan Sea. Our study also reveals that Chuandishan basalt in Dunhua area formed by Early Oligocene volcanic activity, which differs from the Pliocene or Miocene stratigraphic ages assumed before. Over the past decade, the seismicity rate in the state of Oklahoma has increased significantly, which has been linked to industrial operations, such as saltwater injection and hydraulic fracturing. Taking advantage of induced earthquakes and recently deployed seismometers, we construct a 3‐D radially anisotropic seismic velocity model for the crust of Oklahoma by using full waveform inversion. To mitigate the well‐known cycle‐skipping problem, we use misfit functions based on phase and waveform differences in several frequency bands. Relative velocity perturbations in the inverted model allow us to delineate major geological provinces in Oklahoma, such as the Anadarko Basin and the Cherokee Platform/Shelf. In addition, radial anisotropy in the inverted model reflects deformation within the crust of Oklahoma, which might correlate with sedimentary layering, microcracks/fractures, as well as dominant orientation of anisotropic minerals. The crystalline basement beneath Oklahoma can be inferred from the new velocity model, which enables us to better classify induced seismicity in current earthquake catalogs. Furthermore, synthetic experiments suggest that the new velocity model enables us to better constrain earthquake locations in Oklahoma, especially for determining their depths, which are important for investigating induced seismicity. Plain Language Summary: Taking advantage of induced earthquakes and seismometers deployed in Oklahoma in the last decade, we construct a radially anisotropic seismic velocity model for the crust beneath Oklahoma by using full waveform inversion. The data misfit is iteratively reduced by about 40%, and predicted seismograms based on the new velocity model can fit observations very well. We can identify geological structures from the velocity model, such as low velocity anomalies associated with the Anadarko Basin, and fast anomalies related to the Cherokee Platform. Positive radial anisotropy (RA) in the shallow crust might reflect layered sedimentary structure, while negative RA within the middle crust may relate to preferred orientation of anisotropic minerals, such as plagioclase, mica, and amphibole. Furthermore, synthetic tests are used to illustrate the impact of lateral variations of seismic velocity on earthquake locations, especially for focal depths. Therefore, this new 3‐D model provides us an opportunity to improve current earthquake catalogs in Oklahoma, as well as improving our understanding of the triggering mechanisms of induced earthquakes. Different bimetallic platinum and bismuth catalysts supported on melamine‐modified activated carbon (AC) are designed by a co‐impregnation method. Through controlling the activation temperatures of the melamine−AC mixture, a series of N‐doped and C3N4‐modified AC (N−AC and C3N4−AC) are prepared. Combined powder X‐ray diffractions, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic, and high‐angle annual dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopic studies demonstrate that the introduction of C3N4 favors the formation of PtBi alloy and leads to increased particle sizes in comparison to the pristine and N‐doped AC‐supported bimetallics. The catalytic performance of the developed catalysts is evaluated in the oxidation of n‐heptanol oxidation in a batch mode using O2 as the oxidant. PtBi/C3N4−AC exhibits significantly boosted activity as well as selectivity to heptanoic acid as compared with the other catalysts. A high yield of heptanoic acid of 69 % can be achieved under the optimized reaction conditions. Furthermore, our work points to the PtBi alloy as the most active sites for the alcohol oxidation. Catalyst deactivation occurs in the cycling tests, mainly due to the collapse of the alloy phase and likely the decrease in particle sizes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Significant imbalances in terrestrial water storage (TWS) and severe drought have been observed around the world as a consequence of climate changes. Improving our ability to monitor TWS and drought is critical for water‐resource management and water‐deficit estimation. We use continuous seismic ambient noise to monitor temporal evolution of near‐surface seismic velocity, dv/v, in central Oklahoma from 2013 to 2022. The derived dv/v is found to be negatively correlated with gravitational measurements and groundwater depths, showing the impact of groundwater storage on seismic velocities. The hydrological effects involving droughts and recharge of groundwater occur on a multi‐year time scale and dominate the overall derived velocity changes. The thermoelastic response to atmospheric temperature variations occurs primarily on a yearly timescale and dominates the superposed seasonal velocity changes in this study. The occurrences of droughts appear simultaneously with local peaks of dv/v, demonstrating the sensitivity of near‐surface seismic velocities to droughts. However, current approaches to measure TWS variations have limited temporal or spatial resolution. In this study, we use near‐surface seismic velocity variations, dv/v, derived from continuous seismic recordings to monitor changes of TWS in central Oklahoma. A negative correlation between the long‐term trend of dv/v with gravity measurements reflects the impact of groundwater recharge/discharge on near‐surface seismic velocity. In addition, a seasonal cycling of dv/v has similar periodicity to recordings of air temperature, which can be explained by thermo‐elastic strain at the subsurface. Comparisons between dv/v and drought index further show the possibility of using near‐surface seismic velocity as a proxy for monitoring severe drought for local communities. Considering the high temporal sampling and flexible spatial deployment, seismometers may be used to monitor subsurface water distributions. This can be useful for sustainable water management and reliable water‐deficit estimation. One important feature of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) change is its strong seasonal fluctuation. Taking advantage of deployed seismographic stations in Greenland, we apply cross‐component auto‐correlation of seismic ambient noise to measure in‐situ near surface relative velocity change (dv/v) in different regions of Greenland. Our results demonstrate that dv/v measurements for most stations have less than 3 months lag times in comparison to the surface mass change. These various lag times may provide us constraints for the thickness of the subglacial till layer over different regions in Greenland. Moreover, in southwest Greenland, we observe a change in the long‐term trend of dv/v for three stations, which might be consistent with the mass change rate (dM/dt) due to the "2012–2013 warm‐cold transition." These observations suggest that seismic noise auto‐correlation technique may be used to monitor both seasonal and long‐term changes of the GrIS. Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS), which provides a green route to the production of clean fuels and fine chemicals, represents some significant applications of catalytic materials and processes in the chemical industry. FTS reactions show a diversity of mechanisms, involve various catalytic materials, and offer options for continuous investigation. Cobalt-based catalysts have been widely used for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis both in academia and in industry. This mini-review will focus on relevant research achievements in cobalt-based FTS catalysts by our group in the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP). Specific contents will include the development of Co/Co2C-based nano-catalysts (i) for the highly selective synthesis of clean fuels over Co-based catalysts supported by carbon materials and (ii) for the synthesis of linear α-alcohols and olefins over Co–Co2C-based catalysts supported by carbon materials. The direct synthesis of linear α-alcohols from syngas using a Co–Co2C/AC catalyst is highlighted. The innovative work of FTS using activated carbon (AC)-supported Co/Co2C-based nano-catalysts could bring some insight into new FTS catalyst designs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
