Using the bow shock crossing events from four spacecraft: IMP 8, Geotail, Magion‐4, and Cluster 1, a new three‐dimensional asymmetric bow shock model is constructed. The model is parameterized by the solar wind dynamic pressure, the interplanetary magnetic field, magnetosonic Mach number, solar wind β, and the Earth's dipole tilt angle. It is shown that the shape and size of bow shock are both affected by the dipole tilt angle. The dipole tilt angle causes asymmetries in the meridional plane: (1) the bow shock subsolar standoff distance and the north‐south asymmetry increase with the dipole tilt angle; (2) as the dipole tilt angle increases, the shock flaring angle in the equatorial plane is slightly reduced, while in the meridional plane the flaring angle obviously decreases in Southern Hemisphere and keeps almost unchanged in the Northern Hemisphere. The flaring angle in the Northern Hemisphere is larger than in the Southern Hemisphere; (3) the effects of negative dipole tilt angle on shock flaring are just the opposite of those for positive tilt, and the effects of dipole tilt angle on the shape of the bow shock are north‐south symmetric. The model results are also validated by comparing with one previous empirical model and with observational crossings, and it is demonstrated that the new model is able to predict the observed crossings more accurately and can better describe the rotational asymmetry and north‐south asymmetry of the Earth's bow shock. The fragmentation of Cu75Zr25 amorphous films with varying film thickness on polyimide substrates has been investigated by uniaxial tensile testing, in combination with in situ electrical resistivity measurements, optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. It is revealed that the cracking strain monotonically increases as decreases, which can be attributed to the constraint effect of film thickness on shear band formation and the columnar structures in the thicker films. Similarly, the buckling strain also increases with decreasing , with the delamination of Cu75Zr25 amorphous films following the strain energy criterion. The adhesion energy between Cu75Zr25 film and polyimide is estimated to be of ∼ 6.5 J m−2 based on the buckle geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a modified level set method is proposed for simulation of multiphase flows with large density ratio and high Reynolds number. The present method simply introduces a source or sink term into the level set equation to compensate the mass loss or offset the mass increase. The source or sink term is derived analytically by applying the mass conservation principle with the level set equation and the continuity equation of flow field. Since only a source term is introduced, the application of the present method is as simple as the original level set method, but it can guarantee the overall mass conservation. To validate the present method, the vortex flow problem is first considered. The simulation results are compared with those from the original level set method, which demonstrates that the modified level set method has the capability of accurately capturing the interface and keeping the mass conservation. Then, the proposed method is further validated by simulating the Laplace law, the merging of two bubbles, a bubble rising with high density ratio, and Rayleigh-Taylor instability with high Reynolds number. Abstract: In this study we use the bow shock crossings contained in the Space Physics Data Facility database, collected by four spacecraft (IMP 8, Geotail, Magion‐4, and Cluster1) to analyze the effect of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component on the bow shock position and shape. Although the IMF Bz component is usually considered much more geoeffective than By, we find that the dayside bow shock is more responsive to the eastward component of the IMF than the north‐south one. We believe that the explanation lies in the changes that the Bz component induces on the magnetopause location and shape, which largely compensate the corresponding changes in the dayside bow shock location. In the tail, we find that the bow shock cross section is elongated roughly in the direction perpendicular to the IMF direction, which agrees with earlier modeling studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an adaptive mesh refinement-multiphase lattice Boltzmann flux solver (AMRMLBFS) for effective simulation of complex binary fluid flows at large density ratios. In this method, an AMR algorithm is proposed by introducing a simple indicator on the root block for grid refinement and two possible statuses for each block. Unlike available block-structured AMR methods, which refine their mesh by spawning or removing four child blocks simultaneously, the present method is able to refine its mesh locally by spawning or removing one to four child blocks independently when the refinement indicator is triggered. As a result, the AMR mesh used in this work can be more focused on the flow region near the phase interface and its size is further reduced. In each block of mesh, the recently proposed MLBFS is applied for the solution of the flow field and the level-set method is used for capturing the fluid interface. As compared with existing AMR-lattice Boltzmann models, the present method avoids both spatial and temporal interpolations of density distribution functions so that converged solutions on different AMR meshes and uniform grids can be obtained. The proposed method has been successfully validated by simulating a static bubble immersed in another fluid, a falling droplet, instabilities of two-layered fluids, a bubble rising in a box, and a droplet splashing on a thin film with large density ratios and high Reynolds numbers. Good agreement with the theoretical solution, the uniform-grid result, and/or the published data has been achieved. Changes in land use are likely to affect the abundance and functioning of microorganisms in the soil. In China many paddy fields are being converted for vegetable growing. We wished to determine how these changes affected the microbial populations in one particular region in Hunan province, where the climate is subtropical monsoon, as an example. We sampled the soil down to 1 m in several fields: three that were still growing paddy rice, three that had been converted for vegetable growing 2 years earlier and three that had been growing vegetables for 25 years. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction ( qPCR) and terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism ( T-RFLP) were used to determine the abundance and community composition of nxrA-containing nitrifiers and narG-containing denitrifiers in the soil. The abundances of these organisms depended largely on the amount of organic matter in the soil and decreased with increasing depth, as did the potential nitrification rate ( PNR) and nitrate reductase activity ( NRA). Enzyme activity was significantly correlated with the abundance of nitrogen-cycling bacteria. The change from rice to vegetable growing resulted in more residual nitrate- N in the soil, which correlated more strongly with the abundance of nxrA-containing nitrifiers in the topsoil (0-20 cm) and narG-containing denitrifiers in the deeper soil (80-100 cm). In general, the numbers of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms decreased markedly with increasing depth, but were less affected by the change from rice to vegetable cultivation in the fields investigated. Our results suggest that the abundances of nitrogen-cycling microbial communities are affected more by depth in the soil than by change of land use in these circumstances. The dynamic properties of the micelles of a novel synthesized amphiphilic block copolymer, dendritic poly(benzyl ether)–poly(acrylic acid) (Dendr.PBE-PAA), formed in aqueous solutions were studied by the 1H self-diffusion coefficient, relaxation measurements and 2D nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy. The experimental results show that Dendr.PBE-PAA molecules self-aggregate in aqueous solution. The dynamic properties of the Dendr.PBE-PAA micelles vary with their total concentration in the solution. The motion of the molecules in the micelles of a concentrated solution is more restricted than that in a less concentrated one. The main chains of PAA are densely packed in the surface layer of the hydrophobic core with the carboxyl side chain pointing to the aqueous medium and the hydrophobic phenoxy rings stay in the interior. The self-aggregate becomes larger as the degree of polymerization of PAA increases. However the phenoxy rings situated in the interior of the hydrophobic core become more loosely packed. n-Hexadecane is solubilized in the micelles. Micellization of Triton X-100 (TX-100) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDSN) in the presence of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PAAM) was studied by 1H NMR spin–spin and spin–lattice relaxation. Relaxation experiment results show that TX-100 behaves differently from SDSN in micellization in the presence of PAAM. PAAM causes a decrease in the critical micellar concentration of SDSN, while it has no influence on the critical micellar concentration of TX-100. The lack of cross peaks between protons of PAAM and those of TX-100 and SDSN in the 2D nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY) spectra confirms self-aggregation of TX-100 and SDSN in the presence of PAAM. The identity of each of the corresponding interproton distances of TX-100 with and without the addition of PAAM further confirms the formation of normal TX-100 micelles in the presence of PAAM. Besides, the distances between protons on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains in TX-100 micelles, calculated from the 2D NOESY spectra, are remarkably shorter than those for an extended hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene) chain. 1H NMR spin–lattice and spin–spin relaxation of different types (cationic cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, anionic sodium dodecyl sulfonate and nonionic Triton X-100) of surfactants in water solution were studied. Simulation of the decay curves of proton relaxation shows that the spin lattice relaxation of all the samples exhibits exponentially, while the spin–spin relaxation for several protons on the hydrophobic chains forming the micellar core is bi-exponential. The fast relaxing component is attributed to the part of the segments of the hydrophobic chain, situated near or on the surface of the micellar core, while the slower relaxing component is attributed to the rest part staying in the interior. The latter exchanges with the former in equilibrium. Thus, a part of each certain segment of the hydrophobic chain has an opportunity to stay in the surface layer of the micellar core and spend some time on the interface experiencing hydrophilic environment. Generally, the protons on the methylene carbon of the hydrophobic chain nearest to the polar head have more chance to spend time in the hydrophilic environment. However, it seems to be dependent on the chemical structure of the surfactant molecule. Large size of the polar group of CTAB shows steric hindrance on the packing of the hydrophobic chain. Quantitative results are given. The fact, that the fraction of slow relaxing protons on the hydrophilic ethylene oxide long chain of Triton X-100 dominates over that of fast relaxing protons, and that their T2 values are larger than those of the protons on the hydrocarbon chain in the interior of the micellar core, suggests that the ethylene oxide chain does not participate in the formation of the micellar core. Immunoluminometric assays for lactoferrin and elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complexes were developed using solid-phase methodology, which has already been published from this laboratory. The aim of the study was to develop a rapid method to see whether elevated granulocyte activity was present in the lung, as for example in neonatal sepsis. The lactoferrin assay gave reliable results within 30 minutes, the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complexes, within 5 hours. The correlation between both analytes was good, so that the lactoferrin assay could replace the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor assay in emergency cases. The lactoferrin assay was used for rapid answer, the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complex assay for "fine" monitoring of the progress of the disease. Both assays could be used to measure concentrations in plasma or bronchoalveolar lavage using a 10 microliters sample. Plasma for the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complex determination had to be diluted 1:50 before being assayed. Only EDTA plasma was used in the assay, as either heparin plasma or serum resulted in granulocyte destruction, thus giving rise to elevated, and non-reproducible results. The results from bronchoalveolar lavage show an excellent correlation between elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complexes and lactoferrin. No interference was seen from lipaemic or icteric plasma samples. Results from haemolytic samples i.e. where lysis of erythrocytes and leukocytes had occurred, had to be treated with care if no clinical indication of intravascular haemorrhage was present. The assays lend themselves to perinatal diagnosis, as the total volume of plasma or lavage needed is theoretically under 50 microliters, i.e. ethically acceptable for regular monitoring of neonates.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
