Increasing stockpile of scrap rubber tires imposes a serious threat to the safety of surrounding ecological environment. Rubber particle of excellent thermal insulating properties with comparison of granular soils makes it an ideal candidate for developing sustainable construction materials. While thermal conduction behaviors of rubber-sand mixtures have not been clearly revealed. Several series of thermal probe tests were conducted on scrap rubber tire-sand mixtures with varied rubber contents, moisture contents, and dry densities. A predictive model was proposed by resorting to the artificial neural network technology to capture the thermal conductivity data. The results showed that an obvious decrease in thermal conductivity is taken after the addition of rubber, and the decreasing rate is related to moisture content of mixtures. The presence of pore water is beneficial to the improvement of thermal conductivity. The critical moisture content of investigated rubber-sand mixtures is approximately 8 %, further increase in moisture content leads to a faint increment of thermal conductivity. Rubber-sand mixtures of high dry density have good particle contact behaviors, exhibiting a high thermal conductivity value. The influences of rubber content, moisture content, and dry density on thermal conductivity are intertwined together that should be comprehensively analyzed. The developed model exhibits satisfactory accuracy for thermal conductivity prediction, as reflected by correlation coefficient higher than 85 % and relative error being controlled under 10 %. Additional study is recommended to evaluate the thermo-mechanical behaviors and durability of rubber-soil mixtures. The outcomes of this study provide one of available answers for reusing scrap rubber tire in engineering fields.

ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence and risk determinants of locomotive syndrome (LS) in geriatric cancer survivors in China. To generate evidence-based insights for the clinical prevention and intervention strategies concerning LS in this vulnerable population, emphasizing the need for integrated public health initiatives focused on maintaining mobility among geriatric cancer survivors.MethodsSix hundred geriatric cancer survivors were recruited at a hospital in China. A demographic questionnaire, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short (IPAQ-S), and the Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25) were administered. Survivors were stratified into three physical activity level (PAL) groups via IPAQ-S scores: low, medium, and high. LS was operationally defined via GLFS-25 scores, with cut-offs established for LS-1, LS-2, and LS-3. Elevated GLFS-25 scores signified deteriorated motor function (MF) and increased severity of LS. Data analysis was done to investigate the risk determinants to the occurrence and exacerbation of LS among geriatric cancer survivors.ResultsOf the 524 geriatric cancer survivors who completed the study, 292 (55.7%) were diagnosed with LS, including 152 (29%) categorized under LS-1, 52 (9.9%) under LS-2, and 88 (16.8%) under LS-3. Objective: To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese-translated Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25) for the assessment of locomotive syndrome (LS) in individuals surviving malignancies. Methods: 393 tumor survivors at a general hospital in China were recruited. The Chinese version of GLFS-25 was utilized to conduct a cross-sectional survey to ascertain the tool's efficacy in measuring LS in this cohort. The scale's validity was examined through content, structural and discriminant validity assessments, while its reliability was investigated by determining the internal consistency (via Cronbach's α coefficient) and test-retest reliability (via intragroup correlation coefficient, ICC). Results: The Chinese-adapted GLFS-25 demonstrated a robust scale-level content validity index of 0.94, while item-level content validity indices ranged from 0.83 to 1.00 across individual items. The same viral infection in different hosts may result in varying levels of clinical symptoms, which is related to the genetic background of the host itself. A total of 406 common cases and 452 severe cases of enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection in Yunnan Province were selected as the research subjects, and SNaPshot technology was used to detect genetic polymorphisms for 25 Tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms (TagSNPs) in the selectin P ligand (SELPLG) and scavenger receptor class B member 2 (SCARB2) genes. Our results demonstrate that SCARB2 polymorphisms (rs74719289, rs3733255 and rs17001551) are related to the severity of EV71 infection (A vs G: OR 0.330; 95% CI 0.115 - 0.947; T vs C: OR 0.336; 95% CI 0.118 - 0.958; and A vs G: OR 0.378; 95% CI 0.145 - 0.984). The SELPLG polymorphisms were not significantly different between common cases and severe cases. Therefore, we conclude that the SCARB2 gene has a protective effect on the course of hand, foot and mouth disease caused by EV71 infection and that SCARB2 gene mutations can reduce the severity of the disease.

This study aimed to investigate the role of water intrusion on thermal conduction and durability of three types of carbonaceous rock with different mineralogical components. The soaking method was selected to simulate water intrusion, and the respective evolutions of thermal conductivity k and slake durability index Id2 during soaking period were assessed. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted to explore the mechanism controlling these revolutions. The results revealed that the magnitude of moisture content and density of carbonaceous rocks at their natural state was clearly correlated to the content of illite mineral. Water intrusion was beneficial to the thermal conduction of carbonaceous rocks, where thermal conductivity increased with an increase in soaking time and exhibited a moderate increment after 8 days of soaking. Slake durability index Id2 was sharply decreased as soaking progressed and reached a low level after soaking. This deterioration in durability was mainly attributed to the absorption of free water, which in turn yields the anisotropic expansion of specific minerals. An unstable structure with more pores and new morphology minerals were identified in carbonaceous rocks at the completion of soaking procedure. An empirical relationship was developed successfully for predicting slake durability index using thermal conductivity.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising anticancer noninvasive method and has great potential for clinical applications. Unfortunately, PDT still has many limitations, such as metastatic tumor at unknown sites, inadequate light delivery and a lack of sufficient oxygen. Recent studies have demonstrated that photodynamic therapy in combination with other therapies can enhance anticancer effects. The development of new nanomaterials provides a platform for the codelivery of two or more therapeutic drugs, which is a promising cancer treatment method. The use of multifunctional nanocarriers for the codelivery of two or more drugs can improve physical and chemical properties, increase tumor site aggregation, and enhance the antitumor effect through synergistic actions, which is worthy of further study. This review focuses on the latest research progress on the synergistic enhancement of PDT by simultaneous multidrug administration using codelivery nanocarriers. We introduce the design of codelivery nanocarriers and discuss the mechanism of PDT combined with other antitumor methods. The combination of PDT and chemotherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, photothermal therapy, hyperthermia, radiotherapy, sonodynamic therapy and even multidrug therapy are discussed to provide a comprehensive understanding.

This paper examines a new study on the synergistic effect of magnetic nanoparticles and wormlike micelles (WLMs) on drag reduction. Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (FE-NPs) are utilized to improve the performance of viscoelastic surfactant (VES) solutions used as fracturing fluids. The chemical composition and micromorphology of the FE-NPs were analyzed with FT-IR and an electron microscope. The stability and interaction of the WLM-particle system were studied by zeta potential and cryo-TEM measurements. More importantly, the influences of the temperature, FE-NP concentration, magnetic field intensity, and direction on the drag reduction rate of WLMs were systematically investigated in a circuit pipe flow system with an electromagnetic unit. The experimental results show that a suitable content of magnetic nanoparticles can enhance the settlement stability and temperature resistance of WLMs. A magnetic field along the flow direction of the fracturing fluid can improve the drag reduction performance of the magnetic WLM system. However, under a magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of fluid flow, an additional flow resistance is generated by the vertical chaining behavior of FE-NPs, which is unfavorable for the drag reduction performance of magnetic VES fracturing fluids. This study may shed light on the mechanism of the synergistic drag reduction effects of magnetic nanoparticles and wormlike micelles.

Background: The factors affecting the outcome of patients referred for lung transplantation (LTx) still have not been investigated extensively. The aim of this study was to characterize the patient outcomes and identify the prognostic factors for death while awaiting the LTx. Methods: From January 2003 to November 2013, the clinical data of 103 patients with end-stage lung disease that had been referred for LTx to Department of Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. The relationship between predictors and survival was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: Twenty-five patients (24.3%) died while awaiting the LTx. Fifty patients (48.5%) underwent LTx, and 28 patients (27.2%) were still on the waitlist. Compared to the candidates with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) had a higher mortality while awaiting the LTx (40.0% vs. 12.3%, P = 0.003). Patients requiring mechanical ventilation (MV) had a higher mortality while waiting than others (50.0% vs. 20.2%, P = 0.038). Two variables, using MV and IPF but not COPD as primary disease, emerged as significant independent risk factors for death on the waitlist (hazard ratio [HR] = 56.048, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.935-798.263, P = 0.003 and HR = 14.859, 95% CI: 2.695-81.932, P = 0.002, respectively). Conclusion: The type of end-stage lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and MV may be distinctive prognostic factors for death while awaiting the LTx.

Fluoro substitution in thermotropic liquid crystals provides a general way of modifying the properties of a parent system. Transition temperatures, mesophase types and other physical properties can be affected by fluoro substitution, so that frequently the behaviors of the parent compound can be manipulated and improved in a predictable manner. This paper discusses the effects of a fluoro substitution in each side-arm of 1,2,4,5-tetrakis((4-(alkoxy)phenyl)ethynyl)benzenes on the resulting mesomorphic properties characterized by optical polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Without any fluoro-substituted side-arms, longer chain-length leads to a wider nematic temperature range on cooling. Incorporation of a fluoro substitution in each side-arm induces the formation of a lamellar suprastructure, lowers transition temperatures and results in a wider mesophase temperature range on cooling.

In order to obtain high-quality kiwifruits with health-promoting characteristics, physicochemical properties, phenolic profiles, antioxidant capacities, and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes (pancreatic lipase and α-glucosidase), of fourteen different types of kiwifruit obtained from China were systematically investigated and compared. Noticeable variations in the fruits’ physicochemical properties and phenolic profiles were observed among them. The total phenolic content of Actinidia chinensis cv. Hongshi, A. chinensis cv. Jinshi, and A. chinensis cv. Jinlong were 16.52 ± 0.26 mg GAE/g DW (dry weight), 13.38 ± 0.20 mg GAE/g DW, and 11.02 ± 0.05 mg GAE/g DW, respectively, which were much higher than those of the other tested kiwifruits. According to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, phenolic compounds, including procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, (−)-epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, and quercetin-3-rhamnoside, were found to be the major compounds in kiwifruits, while procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, and chlorogenic acid were the most abundant phenolic compounds. Furthermore, all the tested kiwifruits exerted remarkable antioxidant capacities and inhibitory effects on pancreatic lipase and α-glucosidase. Indeed, A. chinensis cv. Hongshi, Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinshi, and Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinlong exhibited much better antioxidant capacities and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes than those of the other tested kiwifruits. Particularly, A. polygama showed the highest inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase. Therefore, Actinidia chinensis cv. Hongshi, Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinshi, and Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinlong, as well as A. polygama could be important dietary sources of natural antioxidants and natural inhibitors against pancreatic lipase and α-glucosidase, which is helpful for meeting the growing demand for high-quality kiwifruits with health-promoting characteristics in China.

In autotrophic methanogens, pyruvate oxidoreductase (POR) plays a key role in the assimilation of CO2 and the biosynthesis of organic carbon. This enzyme has been purified to homogeneity, and the genes from Methanococcus maripaludis were sequenced. The purified POR contained five polypeptides with molecular masses of 47, 33, 25, 21.5 and 13 kDa. The N-terminal sequences of four of the polypeptides had high similarity to the subunits commonly associated with this enzyme from other archaea. However, the 21.5-kDa polypeptide had not been previously observed in PORs. Nucleotide sequencing of the gene cluster encoding the POR revealed six open reading frames (porABCDEF). The genes porABCD corresponded to the subunits previously identified in PORs. On the basis of the N-terminal amino acid sequence, porE encoded the 21.5-kDa polypeptide and contained a high cysteinyl residue content and a motif indicative of a [Fe–S] cluster. porF also had a high sequence similarity to porE, a high cysteinyl residue content, and two [Fe–S] cluster motifs. Homologs to porE were also present in the genomic sequences of the autotrophic methanogens Methanocaldococcus jannaschii and Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus. Based upon these results, it is proposed that PorE and PorF are components of a specialized system required to transfer low-potential electrons for pyruvate biosynthesis. Some biochemical properties of the purified methanococcal POR were also determined. This unstable enzyme was very sensitive to O2 and demonstrated high activity with pyruvate, oxaloacetate, and α-ketobutyrate. Methyl viologen, rubredoxin, FMN, and FAD were readily reduced. Activity was also observed with spinach and clostridial ferredoxins and cytochrome c. Coenzyme F420 was not an electron acceptor for the purified enzyme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During growth of the methanogenic archaeon Methanococcus maripaludis on alanine as the sole nitrogen source under H2/CO2, alanine was incorporated into amino acids derived from pyruvate including leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Thus, growth with alanine was an efficient means of labeling intracellular pools of pyruvate in this lithotroph. Cells were grown with 18% [U-13C]alanine, and the distribution of the isotope in the branched-chain amino acids was determined by 13C-NMR. Carbons derived from pyruvate contained 14.5% 13C, indicating that most of the cellular pyruvate was obtained from alanine. In contrast, carbons derived from acetyl-CoA contained only 3–5% 13C, indicating that only small amounts of acetyl-CoA were formed from pyruvate. Thus, autotrophic acetyl-CoA biosynthesis continued even in the presence of an organic carbon source. Moreover, the labeling of acetyl-CoA was lower than would be predicted if pyruvate was a C-1 donor for acetyl-CoA biosynthesis. Carbon derived from the C-1 of acetyl-CoA contained less 13C than carbon derived from the C-2 of acetyl-CoA, and this difference was attributed to the acetyl-CoA:CO2 exchange activity of acetyl-CoA synthase. No enrichment was detected for the C-1 of valine, which was derived from the C-1 of pyruvate. This result was attributed to the pyruvate:CO2 exchange activity of pyruvate oxidoreductase and may have important implications for isotope tracer studies utilizing pyruvate. Lastly, these results demonstrate that the breakdown of pyruvate by methanococci is very limited even under conditions where it is the sole nitrogen and major carbon source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
