Renaissance anatomist Gabrielle Falloppia is best known today for his account of the eponymous fallopian tubes but he made numerous other anatomical discoveries as well, was one of the most famous surgeons of his time, and is widely believed to have invented the condom. Drawing on Falloppia's Observationes anatomicae of 1561 and on dozens of handwritten and published sets of student notes, this book not only looks at Falloppia’s anatomical lectures and demonstrations. It also studies Falloppia’s work on surgical topics – including the French disease and cosmetic surgery – on thermal waters, and on pharmacology. Last but not least, it uses student notes and the letters of contemporary scholars to throw a new light on Falloppia’s biography, on his very special relationship with the botanist Melchior Wieland, who lived in his house for several years, and on his conflicts with his fellow professors in Padua, one of whom, Bassiano Landi, was murdered just ten days after his funeral – by Falloppia’s disciples, as some believed. Written by one of the leading scholars in the field of early modern medicine, this book will appeal to all those interested in the teaching and practice of anatomy, surgery, and pharmacology in the Renaissance.

From King Kong to Candyman, the boundary-pushing genre of horror film has always been a site for provocative explorations of race in American popular culture. This book offers a comprehensive chronological survey of Black horror from the 1890s to present day. In this second edition, Robin R. Means Coleman expands upon the history of notable characterizations of Blackness in horror cinema, with new chapters spanning the 1960s, 2000s, and 2010s to the present, and examines key levels of Black participation on screen and behind the camera. The book addresses a full range of Black horror films, including mainstream Hollywood fare, art-house films, Blaxploitation films, and U.S. hip-hop culture-inspired Nollywood films. This new edition also explores the resurgence of the Black horror genre in the last decade, examining the success of Jordan Peele’s films Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), smaller independent films such as The House Invictus (2018), and Nia DaCosta’s sequel to Candyman (2021). Means Coleman argues that horror offers a unique representational space for Black people to challenge negative or racist portrayals, and to portray greater diversity within the concept of Blackness itself. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how fears and anxieties about race and race relations are made manifest, and often challenged, on the silver screen.

This text examines human sexuality through psychoanalytic theory and modern ego psychology, which looks at emotional meaning and its organization in symbolic representations of affect as organized by the ego. It starts with an exploration of how symbolic representations are applied to the sensory experience of the body in human sexuality, both in reality and in fantasy. Next, the author delves into the phenomenon of romance as an important self-state in human growth and development. The book concludes with an examination of fetishes and fetish enactments, followed by a discussion of relevant treatments. With its original and fulsome insights into the workings of human sexuality, this book will prove vital for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in training and in practice, as well as all those seeking to understand human sexual experiences in greater depth.

To improve body type classification and automatic identification, this study adopted a method by combining three-dimensional (3D) point-cloud data with two-dimensional (2D) photos for the classification of young mens' neck–shoulder shape. A total of 180 male college students were measured by photo and 3D body measuring methods to get the main body information. As for the 3D body cloud data, reverse engineering software was used to measure the parameters closely related to the neck–shoulder shape. Five important parameters, including the forward angle, back angle, shoulder angle, the ratio between neck and shoulder width, and the ratio between neck width and thickness were analyzed to divide young men's neck–shoulder shape into three categories, namely round drop shoulder, forward round neck and wide straight neck, and the classification rules were established. As for the 2D photos (such as front and side photos), the human body contour was extracted to obtain the parameters required for neck–shoulder shape classification by identifying the feature points. The neck–shoulder shape could be automatically recognized, and the accuracy rate is 97.7% to verify that the neck–shoulder shape recognition system is effective. This study proposed a simple neck–shoulder shape automatic recognition method based on the 2D body photos, and provide reference for automatic neck–shoulder shape recognition, 3D modeling and virtual fitting of local features. - Abstract
Acute coronary syndrome is the leading cause of death worldwide, with the highest rates occurring in low-income global regions. This is possibly due to increasing levels of urbanization, which are accompanied by changes in diet and lifestyle, the most common risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). Risk factors for CAD are divided into traditional and non-traditional risk factors. The traditional risk factors are the well-known and well-documented risk factors, which include diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, and a familial history of CAD. The non-traditional risk factors, which are relatively less common, include inflammatory diseases or syndromes such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions like obstructive sleep apnea. Here, we present the case of a 41-year-old male businessman with no traditional risk factors for myocardial infarction, who presented with acute coronary syndrome complicated by acute respiratory failure. A workup revealed SLE as the underlying risk factor. He is currently doing well with management for both SLE and CAD., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent for treatment and open access publication was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. The issue of extracurricular activities remains a priority for the competent institutions. Research carried out in Romania and around the world claims that extracurricular activities are organized by the school, by other institutions of the educational system and by various NGOs. This article aims to find out the opinion of teachers about their type, purpose, as well as their impact on the development of young people, following a questionnaire-based research. The results obtained show us that the organization of extracurricular activities remains a continuous concern for teachers, by actively involving them in their design and realization, aiming at achieving the ends of education. These activities are aimed at development of social skills: communication, cooperation, interaction with different people (87,9%), emotional development (42.3%), active involvement in community life (41,3%). Extracurricular activities carried out by teachers always target the problems or expectations of the community: educational (164 choices), moral, (140 choices) social (136 choices), spiritual (104 choices), less the family ones. Jejunoileal diverticulosis is a rare, often asymptomatic condition, consisting of acquired false diverticula. Diagnosis of ileal perforation is usually made incidentally or after complications, including obstruction, haemorrhage, and diverticulitis. A previously healthy 17-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department with diffuse abdominal pain and fever. CT scan showed air-fluid level in the RLQ and free intraperitoneal air and fluid. The patient underwent an urgent exploratory laparotomy with an intestinal resection and primary anastomosis. We report a rare case of ileal perforation, due to diverticular disease in a healthy young man, treated with an urgent surgery. Such an event requires immediate surgical intervention, especially if it presents as an acute abdomen. Although it can become a surgical emergency, Jejunoileal diverticulosis remains underdiagnosed.

Abstract Kikuchi disease is common among Asians and women aged about 30 years. General symptoms include cervical lymphadenopathy and fever; 64% of the cases are self‐limiting. However, this case is axillary lymphadenopathy, which is the main symptom in males. Thus, Kikuchi disease may be considered in the differential diagnosis of axillary lymphadenopathy.

This edited collection explores how the relationship between comic art and feminism has been shaped by global, transnational, and local trends, curating analyses of multinational comic art that encompass themes of gender, sexuality, power, vulnerability, assault, abuse, taboo, and trauma. The chapters illuminate in turn the defining features of the aesthetics, materiality, and thematic content of their source material – often expressed with humorous undertones of self-reflection or social criticism – as well as recurring strategies of visualising and narrating female experiences. Broadening the research perspective of feminist comics to include national comics cultures peripheral to the cultural centers of Anglo-American, Franco-Belgian, and Japanese comics, the anthology explores how the dominant narrative or history of canonical works can be challenged or deconstructed by local histories of comics and feminism and their transnational connections, and how local histories complement or challenge the current understanding of the relationship between feminism and comic art. This is an essential collection for scholars and students in comics studies, women and gender studies, media studies, and literature.

Gathering together over 60 new and revised discussions of textual issues, this volume represents notorious problems in well-known texts from the classical era by authors including Horace, Ennius, and Vergil. A follow-up to Vegiliana: Critical Studies on the Texts of Publius Vergilius Maro (2017), the volume includes major contributions to the discussion of Horace’s Carmen IV 8 and IV 12, along with studies on Catullus Carmen 67 and Hadrian’s Animula vagula, as well as a new contribution on Livy’s text at IV 20 in connection with Cossus’s spolia opima, and on Vergil’s Aeneid 3. 147–152 and 11. 151–153. On Ennius, the author presents several new ideas on Ann. 42 Sk. and 220–22l, and in editing Horace, he suggests new principles for the critical apparatus and tries to find a balance by weighing both sides in several studies, comparing a conservative and a radical approach. Critica will be an important resource for students and scholars of Latin language and literature.

The Musical Heritage of Al-Andalus is a critical account of the history of Andalusian music in Iberia from the Islamic conquest of 711 to the final expulsion of the Moriscos (Spanish Muslims converted to Christianity) in the early 17th century. This volume presents the documentation that has come down to us, accompanied by critical and detailed analyses of the sources written in Arabic, Old Catalan, Castilian, Hebrew, and Latin. It is also informed by research the author has conducted on modern Andalusian musical traditions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. While the cultural achievements of medieval Muslim Spain have been the topic of a large number of scholarly and popular publications in recent decades, what may arguably be its most enduring contribution – music – has been almost entirely neglected. The overarching purpose of this work is to elucidate as clearly as possible the many different types of musical interactions that took place in medieval Iberia and the complexity of the various borrowings, adaptations, hybridizations, and appropriations involved.

14. The Comic Frame of Mark's Passion.
- Author

Hatton, Stephen B.
- Abstract
This article uses narrative criticism and a study of the word neaniskos in Greek culture to argue that the Gethsemanic young man and the young man in Jesus' open tomb are linked by comedy. It demonstrates that the naked young man pericope utilizes comic imitation and the word neaniskos to connote comic behavior. With the naked young man as a model, the article proceeds to show that the speech of the messenger in the open tomb is comedy vis-à-vis the narrative of the context. This interpretation has the advantages of explaining the ill-fitting interruption of the naked young man scene in Gethsemane, of making sense of the abrupt ending of the Gospel of Mark, and of fitting the use of the word neaniskos in the Gospel of Mark to a connotation used in classical and Hellenistic Greek culture. This collection showcases a multivalent approach to the study of literary multilingualism, embodied in contemporary Nordic literature. While previous approaches to literary multilingualism have tended to take a textual or authorship focus, this book advocates for a theoretical perspective which reflects the multiplicity of languages in use in contemporary literature emerging from increased globalization and transnational interaction. Drawing on a multimodal range of examples from contemporary Nordic literature, these eighteen chapters illustrate the ways in which multilingualism is dynamic rather than fixed, resulting from the interactions between authors, texts, and readers as well as between literary and socio-political institutions. The book highlights the processes by which borders are formed within the production, circulation, and reception of literature and in turn, the impact of these borders on issues around cultural, linguistic, and national belonging. Introducing an innovative approach to the study of multilingualism in literature, this collection will be of particular interest to students and researchers in literary studies, cultural studies, and multilingualism.

- Abstract
The case describes a middle-aged man with well-managed multiple sclerosis who experienced an acute ischemic stroke attributed to a rare anatomical variant - a duplicated left superior cerebellar artery (SCA). Despite his prior lack of neurological issues, the patient presented with severe headaches and walking difficulties. Imaging confirmed the ischemic stroke in the left SCA territory and revealed the duplicated left SCA. This case highlights the importance of considering cerebrovascular anatomy in stroke risk assessment, especially in individuals with unique vascular features such as duplicated SCAs, which can predispose to vascular complications., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2024, AlQahtani et al.)

The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance provides a comprehensive introduction to and analysis of the global art form butoh. Originating in Japan in the 1960s, butoh was a major innovation in twentieth century dance and performance, and it continues to shape-shift around the world. Taking inspiration from the Japanese avant-garde, Surrealism, Happenings, and authors such as Genet and Artaud, its influence can be seen throughout contemporary performing arts, music, and visual art practices. This Companion places the form in historical context, documents its development in Japan and its spread around the world, and brings together the theory and the practice of this compelling dance. The interdisciplinarity evident in the volume reflects the depth and the breadth of butoh, and the editors bring specially commissioned essays by leading scholars and dancers together with translations of important early texts.

Adult intussusception is a rare disease without classical symptoms. A delay in diagnosis may result in a fatal progression to complete bowel obstruction, ischemia, necrosis, and perforation. The association of a tumor with intussusception in young adults is rare. We report a case concerning a young male without a family history of bowel cancer presenting with a proximal ascending colon intussusception secondary to colonic carcinoma. This case puts insights on how intussusception and possible colon carcinoma must be included in the differential diagnosis even in young adults who have a persistent abdominal complaint. A high index of suspicion and an early computed tomography scan were required to prevent delayed diagnosis and the development of complications.

The Internet has become an indispensable tool in communication, business, entertainment, and obtaining information. Behavioral addictions are disorders associated with uncontrolled activity feeding the reward system, motivation, and memory. The purpose of this study was to assess the emotional state in terms of problematic Internet use. The survey was conducted in 2020–2021 in the West Pomeranian region of Poland and involved 500 men aged 18–30 (24.82 ± 3.83). The study was conducted using our own original questionnaire regarding the amount of time spent playing computer games during the weekdays and on days off; the type of school/university; financial situation; as well as the manner, purpose, and degree of Internet use. Other questionnaires were also used, i.e., Beck Depression Inventory, Internet Use Test, GAD-7 Generalized Anxiety Assessment Questionnaire, and Buss and Perry Aggression Questionnaire. Problematic use of the Internet may result in the occurrence of anxiety, anger, hostility or depression. Longer duration of Internet activity was correlated to higher scores on the Internet Use Test degree of problematic Internet use. There was a correlation between the severity of mild depression symptoms and the occurrence of anxiety, verbal and physical aggression, and problematic Internet use.

Purpose. This article reveals the importance of the analysis of the theory of generations to identify the essential characteristics of the phenomenon of youth. Theoretical basis of this study is socio-philosophical anthropology, i.e. philosophical anthropology using certain methods of sociological, socio-psychological and ethnological research, as well as philosophical comprehension of the application of these methods in special sciences. Originality. The authors rethought the theoretical and practical potential of generational theory through its reconceptualization based on philosophical anthropology, which created an opportunity to shift research attention from the attempts to identify superhistorical characteristics of youth to the identification of the essential nature of specific historical and sociocultural features of young people as representatives of a particular culture. Conclusions. Defining the youth phenomenon requires accounting at least three constraints that on the one hand, play a role of warnings that deter from theoretical and practical errors in the study of the youth phenomenon, and on the other hand, guidelines for identifying real, specific characteristics of youth as a social phenomenon. Limitations of theoretical and practical analysis of young people are as follows: first, the need to consider demographic data not as final, but only as initial and preliminary, such that require further substantive socio-cultural analysis; second, the inadmissibility of ignoring the cultural diversity of the manifestations of the youth phenomenon, instead the need to identify the special characteristics of youth of different ethnic, religious and other groups; third, the need to take into account the specifics of self-identification of those who identify themselves as young people as a social group., Мета.

Nominated for the 2017 Dayton Literary Peace Prize in non-fiction This volume examines peace museums, a small and important (but often overlooked) series of museums whose numbers have multiplied world-wide in recent decades. They relate stories and display artifacts—banners, diaries, and posters for example about such themes as: art and peace, antiwar histories, protest, peacekeeping and social justice and promote cultures of peace. This book introduces their different approaches from Japan, which has the largest number of sites, to Bradford, UK and Guernica, Spain. Some peace museums and centers emphasize popular peace symbols and figures, others provide alternative narratives about conscientious objection or civil disobedience, and still others are sites of persuasion, challenging the status quo about issues of war, peace, disarmament, and related issues. Introducing Peace Museums distinguishes between different types of museums that are linked to peace in name, theme or purpose and discusses the debates which surround peace museums versus museums for peace. This book is the first of its kind to critically evaluate the exhibits and activities of this group of museums, and to consider the need for a "critical peace museum studies" which analyses their varied emphasis and content. The work of an experienced specialist, this welcome introduction to peace museums considers the challenges and opportunities faced by these institutions now and in the future.

Kikuchi disease is common among Asians and women aged about 30 years. Jejunoileal diverticulosis is a rare, often asymptomatic condition, consisting of acquired false diverticula. Diagnosis of ileal perforation is usually made incidentally or after complications, including obstruction, haemorrhage and diverticulitis. We report a rare case of ileal perforation, due to diverticular disease in a healthy young man, treated an urgent surgery. Such an event requires immediate surgical intervention, especially if it presents as an acute abdomen. Although it can become a surgical emergency, jejunoileal diverticulosis remains underdiagnosed.

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MESOTHELIOMA , *PERICARDIUM - Abstract
An autopsy case of a malignant pericardial mesothelioma in a 27-year-old man with no history of exposure to asbestos is reported. He was admitted for heart failure due to pericardial effusion of unknown origin and surgically drained, but later died. The diagnosis of a malignant pericardial mesothelioma was made on the basis of histologic, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings. The tumor was located on the pericardium, but autopsy revealed that it had spread extensively in the mediastinum and the lungs. Microscopically, the tumor cells were epithelial like and contained histochemically demonstrable glycogen and hyaluronic acid. Immunohistochemical studies of the tumor demonstrated positive immunoreactivity for cytokeratin 19, muscle actin HHF35, epithelial membrane antigen, CA125, p53 and p21WAF1/CIP1 whereas the tumor was negative for cytokeratins 10 and 17, carcinoembryonic antigen, vimentin, epithelial antigen BerEP4, S-100, c-erbB2 and bcl-2. A high MIB-1 labeling index was noted. Under the electron microscope the tumor cells exhibited long, thin villi. The operation and autopsy findings thus revealed this to be a very rare case of malignant pericardial mesothelioma in a young man. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A 23-year-old young adult, who had no previous illness, suffered from anterior wall acute myocardial infarction, right renal infarction and occlusion of the left distal brachial artery, popliteal artery, and tibioperoneal trunk artery within six months. He had a habit of smoking but denied a history of drug abuse. Protein C deficiency was diagnosed via the examination of a hypercoagulable panel. The investigation of the hypercoagulable state is essential in young adults with an unusual presentation of artery occlusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Renal involvement in lymphoma is not very uncommon but primary renal lymphoma is very rare and prognosis is poor. A 20 years male presented with localized, dull, constant pain and progressive swelling in left upper abdomen. He also gave history of significant weight loss. Examination findings revealed that he was anaemic, left kidney was hugely enlarged and hepatomegaly. Initially it seemed to be a case of renal cell carcinoma. But after doing invasive investigations it was proved to be a case of lymphoma, which considering all clinical and laboratory findings was diagnosed as a case of primary renal lymphoma. Bladder calculi account for 5% of all urinary system calculi. They are usually seen in older men and occur because of infravesical obstructions such as prostate hyperplasia , neurogenic voiding dysfunction. Infection, foreign bodies, anti incontinence surgery in woman and rarely pregnancy can also be predisposing factors for bladder calculus. But they can be rarely seen in children and young, healthy patiants without any predisposing factors and are called endemic bladder calculi. İn this case report we present a 23 years old man who has endemic giant bladder calculus and on whom we performed cystolithotomy . The stone weighed 102 gr and measured 53x52x43 mm in size. And it was composed of calcium and oxalate. There were no predisposing factors in this giant bladder calculus. The aim of this case report was to emphasize the fact that bladder calculi can develop in young healthy men without any predisposing factors and that it can be diagnosed readily with DUSG and/or urinary tract USG.

- Abstract
Solid pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) of the pancreas is an extremely rare pancreatic tumor. It usually goes undetectable for a prolonged period of time given its lack of clinical symptoms. But when detected, it has a malignancy potential of 15%. Here we present a case of SPT diagnosed incidentally in a 17-year-old man during a routine evaluation for an abdominal trauma., Competing Interests: None to declare.

Acute myocarditis may mimic an infarction. Aim is to describe a case series of peculiar myocarditis. From 1997 to 2003, 11 male patients (age 17–39 years) were admitted with diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, localized ST segment elevation and minimal enzyme release. Ten patients had fever in the 3 days prior to admission. Eight patients underwent coronary angiography showing normal coronary arteries. All remained asymptomatic at long term follow-up. In conclusion, myocarditis with ST elevation myocardial infarction presentation is an acute benign syndrome especially frequent in young males. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

- Abstract
Objective: Cigarette smoking carries higher risks for most of the chronic diseases. It also has chronic and acute effects on the hematologic system. This study explores the effects of cigarette smoking on some blood values of the healthy young male smokers., Methods: In this study, cigarette smoking and usage of substance, additional diseases, birth places, and education levels of 171 healthy male subjects between the ages of 20 and 30 years were investigated. Anthropometric measurements of the cases were obtained. Thyroid function tests, vitamin B12, folic acid, ferritin, ferrous/ıron, total ıron binding capacity, leucocytes, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean platelet volume (MPV), HBs AG, Anti-HBs and Anti-HIV were evaluated. Groups of smokers and nonsmokers were compared. The group of smokers was also sorted into subgroups of "2 year-smokers", "5 year-smokers" and "10 year-smokers" according to their pack-years of smoking. The effects of pack-years of smoking on the blood values were also investigated., Results: The MCV values of the group of smokers were higher than the values of nonsmokers, which were statistically significant (p<0.05). As a result of the subgroup analyses of smokers, the white blood cell (WBC) counts of the individuals smoking for 5 or more years were significantly higher than those with a history of smoking less than 5 years, (p<0.05)., Conclusion: This study supports the idea that cigarette smoking and especially longer durations of smoking have adverse effects on the hematologic parameters., Competing Interests: No conflict of interest was declared by the authors.
