We aimed to analyze the natural population characteristics and habitat growth conditions of the valuable seaweed Silvetia siliquosa. Its population characteristics and habitat conditions were assessed monthly from May 2022 to April 2023 and April to August 2022, respectively, on selected habitats. The average population density, coverage, and frequency of S. siliquosa were 579 ± 94.18 ind./m2, 27.82 ± 6.92%/m2, and 78.37 ± 5.98/m2, respectively. The average thallus length and width were 47.53 ± 4.35 and 46.33 ± 4.17 mm, respectively, while the branch width, thickness, and frequency were 2.35 ± 0.03 mm, 0.59 ± 0.12 mm, and 2.8 ± 0.2 times, with a receptacle length and width of 24.13 ± 2.07 and 2.81 ± 0.19 mm, respectively. Among the 40 previously known natural habitats of S. siliquosa, growth was confirmed only in Sepo, Sebang, and Bangpo. The causes for the declining S. siliquosa populations could be attributed to habitat changes due to construction, coastal road maintenance projects, habitat disturbances, and increased pollutants. Habitat substrate disturbances and changes were the main causes of the decrease in S. siliquosa growth. Studies on environmental factors and habitat degradation, growth related to environmental factors, mass cultivation, and the marine ecosystem restoration of S. siliquosa are needed.

Abstract Activation of hypoxia‐inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) contributes to blood‐retinal barrier (BRB) breakdown and pathological neovascularization responsible for vision loss in ischemic retinal diseases. During disease progression, mitochondrial biology is altered to adapt to the ischemic environment created by initial vascular dysfunction, but the mitochondrial adaptive mechanisms, which ultimately contribute to the pathogenesis of ischemic retinopathy, remain incompletely understood. In the present study, it is identified that expression of mitochondrial chaperone tumor necrosis factor receptor‐associated protein 1 (TRAP1) is essential for BRB breakdown and pathologic retinal neovascularization in mouse models mimicking ischemic retinopathies. Genetic Trap1 ablation or treatment with small molecule TRAP1 inhibitors, such as mitoquinone (MitoQ) and SB‐U015, alleviate retinal pathologies via proteolytic HIF1α degradation, which is mediated by opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore and activation of calcium‐dependent protease calpain‐1. These findings suggest that TRAP1 can be a promising target for the development of new treatments against ischemic retinopathy, such as retinopathy of prematurity and proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

This study aimed to determine the toxicity standard and potential risks and effects of polyamide (PA) exposure on neurotoxicity, stress indicators, and immune responses in juvenile crucian carp Carassius carassius. Numerous microplastics (MPs) exists within aquatic environments, leading to diverse detrimental impacts on aquatic organisms. The C. carassius (mean weight, 23.7 ± 1.6 g; mean length, 13.9 ± 1.4 cm) were exposed to PA concentrations of 0, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 mg/L for 2 weeks. Among the neurotransmitters, the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the liver, gill, and intestine of C. carassius was significantly inhibited by PA exposure. Stress indicators such as cortisol and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in the liver, gill, and intestine of C. carassius were significantly increased, while immune responses to lysozyme and immunoglobulin M (IgM) were significantly decreased. Our study demonstrates the toxic effects of MP exposure on crucian carp's neurotoxicity, stress indicators, and immune responses.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a benign tumor made up of non-Langerhans histiocytes that predominantly occurs in infancy and early childhood. Juvenile xanthogranuloma can be differentiated from xanthoma by the distribution of the lesions and the absence of lipid abnormalities. It usually develops on the trunk and upper and lower extremities. Histologically, xanthogranulomas show a mixed cellular dermal infiltration with histiocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils and Touton-type multinucleated giant cells. Classically, juvenile xanthogranuloma is a disease that largely affects infants and children. We describe a rare case of juvenile xanthogranuloma that suddenly developed in the axillary region of a male adult.

Left atrial appendage aneurysm (LAAA) is a rare heart anomaly caused by congenital dysplasia of the pectinate muscle or by an acquired pathological condition of the mitral valve or cardiac muscle. It is often incidentally discovered during chest CT or echocardiography as an abnormal dilatation of the LAA. LAAA is associated with life-threatening complications and most patients require surgical treatment. Therefore, it is important to evaluate associated complications as well as precise diagnoses. This report presents the case of a surgically confirmed LAAA in a 53-year-old female. We also discuss the pathophysiology of LAAA and significant findings related to mortality that can be detected on CT and MRI.

Abstract Background Early intervention is essential for improving the prognosis in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES). The Mental Health Act limits involuntary hospitalization in South Korea to cases where an individual exhibits both a mental disorder and a potential for harming themselves or others, which could result in a delay in the required treatment in FES. We investigated the effect of delay in the first psychiatric hospitalization on clinical outcomes in FES. Methods The South Korean Health Insurance Review Agency database (2012–2019) was used. We identified 15,994 patients with FES who had a record of at least one psychiatric hospitalization within 1 year from their diagnosis. A multivariate linear regression model and a generalized linear model with a gamma distribution and log link were used to examine associations between the duration from the diagnosis to the first psychiatric admission and clinical outcomes as well as direct medical costs after 2 and 5 years. Results Within both the 2-year and the 5-year period, longer durations from the diagnosis to the first psychiatric admission were associated with an increase in the number of psychiatric hospitalizations (2-y: B = 0.003, p = 0.003, 5-y: B = 0.007, p = 0.001) and an increase in direct medical costs (total: 2-y: B = 0.005, p

Using mouse models of liver fibrosis, Kim et al examined the mechanisms underlying the antifibrotic inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome by auranofin. They demonstrated that auranofin-induced inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome in bone marrow-derived macrophages and kupffer cells was mediated via inhibition of the cystine-glutamate antiporter, system Xc, which advances our understanding of the mechanism by which auranofin exerts its therapeutic effects.

In this study, ground tests and numerical analysis were performed to verify the hover performance of the second ducted fan model designed by this research team. Shape of the duct inner surface was asymmetric in longitudinal direction, and considering various aspects such as test site or costs for test operation, a 40% scaled-down model of the ducted fan was adopted for this study. Both the results of the tests and the analysis were found to be coherent, and it was verified that the ducted fan was verified to be well designed to achieve the targeted performance. Furthermore, the performance of this ducted fan was compared with that of the symmetric one to determine the effects of the difference in the duct shape on the performance. It was observed that the symmetric ducted fan performs better in hovering flight, although the asymmetric ducted fan was sufficiently satisfied with the design intention.

Chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus, is heavily farmed and harvested due to its demand as a high-quality protein source rich in fatty acids. However, the effects of environmental cues on sexual maturation of the fish remain understudied. We aim to elucidate the effect of light manipulation on the hormones related to reproduction and on the stress response in the species. Mackerel were exposed to different photoperiods (12 h light:12 h dark or 14 h light:10 h dark) and light wavelengths (provided by white fluorescent bulbs or green LEDs). Total RNA extracted from the brain was assayed with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (a powerful technique for advancing functional genomics) and blood plasma was analyzed via immunoassay using ELISA kits. The mRNA expression of gene-encoding gonadotropin-releasing hormone, gonadotropin hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone were significantly increased through the use of an extended photoperiod and green wavelength, which also increased testosterone and 17β-estradiol plasma levels. Plasma levels of cortisol and glucose, which are indicators of a stress response, were significantly decreased through green LED exposure. Our results indicate that environmental light conditions affect the production of pituitary and sex hormones, and reduce the stress response in S. japonicus.

In our previous study, Hwang-Ryun-Hae-Dok-Tang, which contains berberine (BBR) as a main active ingredient, inhibited cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 in a quasi-irreversible manner. However, no information is available on the detailed mechanism of BBR-induced CYP2D6 inhibition. Thus, the present study aimed to characterize the inhibition mode and kinetics of BBR and its analogues against CYP2D6 using pooled human liver microsomes (HLM). BBR exhibited selective quasi-irreversible inhibition of CYP2D6 with inactivation rate constant (kinact) of 0.025 min−1, inhibition constant (KI) of 4.29 µM, and kinact/KI of 5.83 mL/min/µmol. In pooled HLM, BBR was metabolized to thalifendine (TFD), demethyleneberberine (DMB), M1 (proposed as demethylene-TFD), and to a lesser extent berberrubine (BRB), showing moderate metabolic stability with a half-life of 35.4 min and a microsomal intrinsic clearance of 7.82 µL/min/mg protein. However, unlike BBR, those metabolites (i.e., TFD, DMB, and BRB) were neither selective nor potent inhibitors of CYP2D6, based on comparison of half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50). Notably, TFD, but not DMB, exhibited metabolism-dependent CYP2D6 inhibition as in the case of BBR, which suggests that methylenedioxybenzene moiety of BBR may play a critical role in the quasi-irreversible inhibition. Moreover, the metabolic clearance of nebivolol (β-blocker; CYP2D6 substrate) was reduced in the presence of BBR. The present results warrant further evaluation of BBR–drug interactions in clinical situations.

The objective of this study is to develop (1) a pose-categorization model that classifies the poses of an occupant based on their image in an indoor space and (2) an activity-decision algorithm that identifies the activity being performed by the occupant. For developing an automated intelligent model, a deep neural network is adopted. The model considers the coordinates of the joints of the occupant in the image as input data and returns the pose of the occupant. Datasets composed of indoor images of home and office environments are used for training and testing the model. The training and testing accuracies of the optimized model were 100% for both the home and office environments. A representative activity of an occupant for a certain period has to be decided to control an indoor environment for comfort. The activity-decision algorithm employs a frequency-based method to determine the representative activity type for real-time occupant poses using the pose-categorization model. This study highlights the potential of the developed model and algorithm to determine the activity of occupants to provide an optimal thermal environment corresponding to the individual’s metabolic rate.

Leptin plays an important role in energy homeostasis and reproductive function in fish, especially in reproduction. Migrating fish, such as salmonoids, are affected by external environmental factors, and salinity changes are a particularly important influence on spawning migrations. The aim of this study was to test whether changes in salinity affect the expression of leptin, estrogen receptors (ERs), and vitellogenin (VTG) in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). The expression and activity of leptin, the expression of ERs and VTG, and the levels of estradiol-17β and cortisol increased after the fish were transferred to FW, demonstrating that changes in salinity stimulate the HPG axis in migrating female chum salmon. These findings reveal details about the role of elevated leptin levels and sex steroid hormones in stimulating sexual maturation and reproduction in response to salinity changes in chum salmon.

The present study sets out to review the thermal and optical properties of electrochromic windows (ECWs) through an analysis of the improvement in the energy performance of a building resulting from their application. The performance analysis was based on the change in the room temperature according to the solar transmittance and the orientation of the ECWs, the energy consumptions of the building’s heating/cooling systems, and that of the building’s lighting according to the visible light transmittance (VLT). To achieve this, the Quick Energy Simulation Tool (eQUEST), a building energy interpretation program, was used. The solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of the ECWs was found to be significantly reduced. This had the effect of lowering the room temperature in summer, such that the effect on the summer cooling energy consumption was also remarkable. However, with a reduction in the VLT, the lighting energy consumption increased. The net result of the changes in the heating/cooling and lighting energy consumptions was a reduction of about 11,207 kWh/yr (8.89%). The ECWs were found to realize a greater reduction in a building’s energy consumption than was possible with windows glazed with low-E coated glass.

In the field of radar, deep learning techniques have shown considerably superior performance over traditional classifiers in detecting and classifying targets. However, acquiring sufficient training data for deep learning applications is often challenging and time consuming. In this study, we propose a technique for acquiring training data efficiently using a combination of synthesized data and measured background data. We utilized graphics processing unit (GPU)-based physical optics methods to obtain the backscattered field of moving targets. We then generated a virtual dataset by mixing the synthesized target signal with the background signal real data. Subsequently, we trained a convolutional neural network using the virtual dataset to identify three different classes--Bird, Drone, and Background--from a range-Doppler map. When tested using the measurement data, the trained model achieved an accuracy of over 90%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method in acquiring training data for radar-based deep learning applications. In operating a wind turbine, both predictive and condition-based maintenances are required to minimize the downtime caused by maintenance. The imbalance of rotor rotational speed is an important factor for diagnosing wind turbine failures. The rotational speed imbalance can be caused by accumulated damage or the accumulation of ice, dust, and moisture. In this paper, we proposed a method for detecting the rotational speed imbalance of a wind turbine using a Doppler radar. We calculated the difference in the rotational speed for different times using spectrograms obtained by observing the wind turbine with a Doppler radar and determined the rotational speed imbalance using the fast Fourier transform. The scattering center extraction algorithm is a method to estimate the scattering center from the backscattered field. Superior scattering center extraction algorithms should be robust to noise, independent of the model order, and automatically and quickly operated. In this paper, we propose a novel super resolution scattering center extraction algorithm that satisfies the conditions mentioned above, which has been named the dimension reduced optimization problem (DROP). Using DROP, we determined a one-dimensional scattering center from a high resolution range profile and a two-dimensional scattering center from an inverse synthetic aperture radar image. This study aimed to examine the role of two aquaporin isoforms (AQP3 and AQP8) in response to the hyperosmotic challenge of transitioning from freshwater (FW) to seawater (SW) during parr and smoltification (smolt) using the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. We examined the changes in the expression of AQPs mRNAs in the gills and intestine of the parr and smolt stages of rainbow trout transferred from FW to SW using quantitative real-time PCR in an osmotically changing environment [FW, SW, and recombinant AQP3 (rAQP3) injection at two dosage rates]. Correspondingly, AQPs were greater during smoltification than during parr stages in the rainbow trout. Plasma osmolality and gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity increased when the fish were exposed to SW, but these parameters decreased when the fish were exposed to SW following treatment with rAQP3 during the transition to seawater. Our results suggest that AQPs play an important role in water absorbing mechanisms associated with multiple AQP isoforms in a hyperosmotic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the risks and pattern of evolution of peritumoral brain edema (PTE) after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for asymptomatic intracranial meningiomas. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 320 patients (median age 56 years, range 24-87 years) who underwent primary Gamma Knife radiosurgery for asymptomatic meningiomas between 1998 and 2012. The median tumor volume was 2.7 cc (range 0.2-10.5 cc) and the median follow-up was 48 months (range 24-168 months). Volumetric data sets for tumors and PTE on serial MRIs were analyzed. The edema index (EI) was defined as the ratio of the volume of PTE including tumor to the tumor volume, and the relative edema indices (rEIs) were calculated from serial EIs normalized against the baseline EI. Risk factors for PTE were analyzed using logistic regression. Results: Newly developed or increased PTE was noted in 49 patients (15.3%), among whom it was symptomatic in 28 patients (8.8%). Tumor volume larger than 4.2 cc (p<0.001), hemispheric tumor location (p=0.005), and pre-treatment PTE (p<0.001) were associated with an increased risk of PTE. rEI reached its maximum value at 11 months after SRS and decreased thereafter, and symptoms resolved within 24 months in most patients (85.7%). Conclusion: Caution should be exercised in decision-making on SRS for asymptomatic meningiomas of large volume (>4.2 cc), of hemispheric location, or with pre-treatment PTE. The article presents a study which examines the impact on the atopic dermatitis development in NC/Nga Mice of the heartwood extracts of Broussonetia Kazinoki Sieb. The study made use of the iScript Select cDNA Synthesis kit to synthesis total RNA and the Elisa kits to measure plasma levels. The result of the study shows that the application of the B. kazinoki extract reduced the skin lesions which were characterized by dryness, excoriation, and erythema.

A direct and effective approach is presented for the inverse problem of dynamic structural systems, which is related to structural optimization, system identification, and damage detection. The structural modifications are sought for the characteristic changes assigned from the design goals or modal measurements. A finite element method is used for the system analysis and inverse problem. Mathematical programming techniques are applied for the minimization of the deviation of the finite element model from the desired inverse system, along with an objective function of least structural change. The modal method is based on the perturbation equations of a set of selected degrees of freedom and the energy equation associated with the frequency change. The mode shape change is expressed as the sum of the baseline mode shape and complementary vector, which plays a very important role in the search for the inverse solution. The linear perturbation equation is employed to get an initial approximation, which can be improved through iterations with the nonlinear perturbation equation. The proposed method does not involve the system reduction. Therefore, it is believed to be superior to conventional methods, which suffer from the residual error due to transformation of the eigenproblem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Systematic CCD observations of times of minimum lights for eclipsing binaries has been carried out from 2002 to 2007 at Campus Station of Chungbuk National University Observatory which is located in Cheongju city, Korea. As a by-product of our observations, photometric data for stars in CCD images taken from 2005 to 2007 were used to determine 1st order atmospheric extinction coefficient (hereafter AEC) and seasonal and yearly variations of the AECs were studied. Total nights used for determination of AECs were 57 days in 2005, 51 days in 2006, and 63 days in 2007. As a result the annual mean value of the AECs per air mass is calculated as 0.34m ± 0.18m for 2005, 0.38m ± 0.19m for 2006, and 0.45m ± 0.20m for 2007. These values show that the AECs and their standard deviations are two and four times, respectively, larger than those of normal observatories which are not located near large cities. Annual comparison between concentration of atmospheric fine dust and coefficient of atmospheric extinction show strong correlation between two quantities of which time variations show similar patterns. The AECs for the east sky show larger than those for the west sky. It can be easily understood by the reasonable possibility that air pollutants remain more in the east sky than in the west because the east area of Cheongju city has been more developed than the west one. In conclusion the atmospheric extinction of the night sky of Cheongju city has an annual trend of increase of 0.06m airmass^{-1} year^{-1} implying that it may take only about 13 years for Cheongju city to have 2 times brighter night sky than the present one. Our study highlights that variations of AEC can be used as an important indicator of air pollution to monitor night skies.
