Despite the recent wide investigation on active cancer drug delivery, there are still strong medical unmet needs for active tumor‐environment responsive cancer drug delivery in terms of spatiotemporal control. Herein, a biohybrid system of pH‐responsive peptide nanotubes (PNTs)‐coated microalgae for active cancer drug delivery in response to the tumor‐environment is developed. The amphiphilic PNTs are effectively used to encapsulate cancer drugs and coat the living microalgae of C. reinhardtii by electrostatic interactions. The drug‐loaded PNTs‐based biohybrid microalgae maintain agile movement with phototaxis behavior. After in vitro characterization and cytotoxicity assessment, it is shown that the biohybrid microalgae could be phototactically localized to the cancer cells and pH‐responsively disassembled to release cancer drugs in a controlled manner. Finally, with the encapsulation of paclitaxel, the statistically significant suppression of tumor growth in xenograft tumor model animals is successfully demonstrated. Taken together, the feasibility of the multifunctional microrobotic platform for advanced cancer therapy is confirmed.

The slow growth and complex life cycle of Haematococcus lacustris pose significant challenges for cost-effective astaxanthin production. This study explores the use of microfluidic collision treatment to stimulate the germination of dormant seed cysts, thereby improving photosynthetic cell growth and astaxanthin productivity in H. lacustris cultivated in well plate and flask cultures. The flow rate (1.0–3.0 mL/min) and the number of T-junction loops (3–30) were optimized in the microfluidic device. Under optimal conditions (a flow rate of 2.0 mL/min with 10 loops), the total cell number density in well plate cultures increased by 44.5% compared to untreated controls, reaching 28.9 ± 2.0 × 104 cells/mL after 72 h. In flask cultures, treated cysts showed a 21% increase in astaxanthin productivity after 30 d, reaching 0.95 mg/L/d, due to higher biomass concentrations, while the astaxanthin content per cell remained constant. However, excessive physical collision stress at higher flow rates and loop numbers resulted in reduced cell viability and cell damage. These findings suggest that carefully controlled cyst mechanostimulation can be an effective and environmentally friendly strategy for Haematococcus biorefining, enabling the production of multiple bioactive products.

Efficient induction of astaxanthin (AXT) biosynthesis remains a considerable challenge for the industrialization of the biorefinement of the microalga Haematococcus lacustris. In this study, we evaluated the technical feasibility of photosynthetic electrotreatment to enhance AXT accumulation in H. lacustris. The AXT content of H. lacustris electrotreated at an optimal current intensity (10 mA for 4 h) was 21.8% to 34.9% higher than that of the untreated control group, depending on the physiological state of the initial palmella cells. The contents of other carotenoids (i.e., canthaxanthin, zeaxanthin, and β-carotene) were also increased by this electrotreatment. However, when H. lacustris cells were exposed to more intense electric treatments, particularly at 20 and 30 mA, cell viability significantly decreased to 84.2% and 65.6%, respectively, with a concurrent reduction in the contents of both AXT and the three other carotenoids compared to those of the control group. The cumulative effect of electric stimulation is likely related to two opposing functions of reactive oxygen species, which facilitate AXT biosynthesis as signaling molecules while also causing cellular damage as oxidizing radicals. Collectively, our findings indicate that when adequately controlled, electric stimulation can be an effective and eco-friendly strategy for inducing targeted carotenoid pigments in photosynthetic microalgae.

Improving the production rate of high-value nutraceutical compounds, such as astaxanthin and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), is important for the commercialization of Haematococcus pluvialis biorefineries. Here, the effects of a phytohormone, strigolactone analog rac-GR24, on cell growth and astaxanthin and fatty acid biosynthesis in H. pluvialis were investigated. Four concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8 µM) of rac-GR24 were initially added during 30 days of photoautotrophic cultivation. The addition of rac-GR24 improved cell number density and chlorophyll concentration in H. pluvialis cultures compared to the control; the optimal concentration was 8 µM. Despite a slightly reduced astaxanthin content of 30-d-old cyst cells, the astaxanthin production (26.1 ± 1.7 mg/L) improved by 21% compared to the rac-GR24-free control (21.6 ± 1.5 mg/L), owing to improved biomass production. Notably, at the highest dosage of 8 µM rac-GR24, the total fatty acid content of the treated H. pluvialis cells (899.8 pg/cell) was higher than that of the untreated cells (762.5 pg/cell), resulting in a significant increase in the total fatty acid production (361.6 ± 48.0 mg/L; 61% improvement over the control). The ratio of PUFAs, such as linoleic (C18:2) and linolenic (C18:3) acids, among total fatty acids was high (41.5–44.6% w/w) regardless of the rac-GR24 dose.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are new green solvents, which are widely used in lignocellulosic and microalgal biorefineries. However, high-temperature operating conditions limit their application in the extraction of heat-labile algal products, such as bioactive astaxanthin. In this study, we report the technical feasibility of room-temperature astaxanthin extraction from Haematococcus lacustris cysts with a thick and complex cell wall structure, by combining ultrathin α-quartz nanoplates (NPLs) with ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([Emim])-based ILs. When four different [Emim]-based ILs with thiocyanate (SCN), diethylphosphate (DEP), HSO4, and Cl anions were applied to 90-day-old H. lacustris cysts at room temperature (~28 °C), the astaxanthin extraction efficiency was as low as 9.6–14.2%. Under sonication, α-quartz NPLs disrupted the cyst cell wall for a short duration (5 min). The astaxanthin extraction efficacies of a subsequent IL treatment improved significantly to 49.8% for [Emim] SCN, 60.0% for [Emim] DEP, 80.7% for [Emim] HSO4, and 74.3% for [Emim] Cl ions, which were 4.4, 6.1, 8.4, and 5.2 times higher than the extraction efficacy of only ILs, respectively. This finding suggests that α-quartz NPLs can serve as powerful cell-wall-disrupting agents for the room-temperature IL-mediated extraction of astaxanthin from robust algal cyst cells.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising technology platform for the production of chemicals and fuels from CO2 and external conducting materials (i.e., electrodes). In this system, electroactive microorganisms, called electrotrophs, serve as biocatalysts for cathodic reaction. While several CO2-fixing microorganisms can reduce CO2 to a variety of organic compounds by utilizing electricity as reducing energy, direct extracellular electron uptake is indispensable to achieve highly energy-efficient reaction. In the work reported here, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a CO2-fixing chemoautotroph and a potential electroactive bacterium, was adopted to perform a cathodic CO2 reduction reaction via MES. To promote direct electron uptake, the graphite felt cathode was modified with a combination of chitosan and carbodiimide compound. Robust biofilm formation promoted by amide functionality between R. sphaeroides and a graphite felt cathode showed significantly higher faradaic efficiency (98.0%) for coulomb to biomass and succinic acid production than those of the bare (34%) and chitosan-modified graphite cathode (77.8%), respectively. The results suggest that cathode modification using a chitosan/carbodiimide composite may facilitate electron utilization by improving direct contact between an electrode and R. sphaeroides.

The green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis accumulates astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant pigment, as a defense mechanism against environmental stresses. In this study, we investigated the technical feasibility of a stress-based method for inducing astaxanthin biosynthesis in H. pluvialis using electric stimulation in a two-chamber bioelectrochemical system. When a cathodic (reduction) current of 3 mA (voltage: 2 V) was applied to H. pluvialis cells for two days, considerable lysis and breakage of algal cells were observed, possibly owing to the formation of excess reactive oxygen species at the cathode. Conversely, in the absence of cell breakage, the application of anodic (oxidation) current effectively stimulated astaxanthin biosynthesis at a voltage range of 2–6 V, whereas the same could not be induced in the untreated control. At an optimal voltage of 4 V (anodic current: 30 mA), the astaxanthin content in the cells electro-treated for 2 h was 36.9% higher than that in untreated cells. Our findings suggest that electric treatment can be used to improve astaxanthin production in H. pluvialis culture if bioelectrochemical parameters, such as electric strength and duration, are regulated properly.

The color of food is a critical factor influencing its general acceptance. Owing to the effects of chemical colorants on health, current research is directly aimed at producing natural and healthy food colorants from microbial sources. A pigment-producing fungal isolate, obtained from soil samples and selected based on its rapidity and efficiency in producing red pigments, was identified as Monascus ruber OMNRC45. The culture conditions were optimized to enhance pigment production under submerged fermentation. The optimal temperature and pH for the highest red pigment yield were 30 °C and 6.5, respectively. The optimum carbon and nitrogen sources were rice and peptone, respectively. The usefulness of the pigment produced as a food colorant was evaluated by testing for contamination by the harmful mycotoxin citrinin and assessing its biosafety in mice. In addition, sensory evaluation tests were performed to evaluate the overall acceptance of the pigment as a food colorant. The results showed that M. ruber OMNRC45 was able to rapidly and effectively produce dense natural red pigment under the conditions of submerged fermentation without citrinin production. The findings of the sensory and biosafety assessments indicated the biosafety and applicability of the red Monascus pigment as a food colorant.

Haematococcus pluvialis accumulates astaxanthin, which is a high-value antioxidant, during the red cyst stage of its lifecycle. The development of a rigid cell wall in the cysts hinders the recovery of astaxanthin. We investigated morphological changes and cell disruption of mature H. pluvialis cyst cells while using high-pressure homogenization for astaxanthin extraction. When treated with French-press-cell (pressure, 10,000−30,000 psi; passage, 1−3), the intact cyst cells were significantly broken or fully ruptured, releasing cytoplasmic components, thereby facilitating the separation of astaxanthin by ethyl acetate. Fluorescence microscopy observations using three different fluorescent dyes revealed that a greater degree of cell breakage caused greater external dispersion of astaxanthin, chlorophyll, lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. The mechanical treatment resulted in a high cell disruption rate of up to 91% based on microscopic cell typing and Coulter methods. After the ethyl acetate extraction, the astaxanthin concentration significantly increased by 15.2 mg/L in proportion to the increase in cell disruption rate, which indicates that cell disruption is a critical factor for solvent-based astaxanthin recovery. Furthermore, this study recommends a synergistic combination of the fast instrumental particle-volume-distribution analysis and microscope-based morphologic phenotyping for the development of practical H. pluvialis biorefinery processes that co-produce various biological products, including lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, chlorophyll, and astaxanthin.

Microalgae have been considered as one of the most promising biomass feedstocks for various industrial applications such as biofuels, animal/aquaculture feeds, food supplements, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals. Several biotechnological challenges associated with algae cultivation, including the small size and negative surface charge of algal cells as well as the dilution of its cultures, need to be circumvented, which increases the cost and labor. Therefore, efficient biomass recovery or harvesting of diverse algal species represents a critical bottleneck for large-scale algal biorefinery process. Among different algae harvesting techniques (e.g., centrifugation, gravity sedimentation, screening, filtration, and air flotation), the flocculation-based processes have acquired much attention due to their promising efficiency and scalability. This review covers the basics and recent research trends of various flocculation techniques, such as auto-flocculation, bio-flocculation, chemical flocculation, particle-based flocculation, and electrochemical flocculation, and also discusses their advantages and disadvantages. The challenges and prospects for the development of eco-friendly and economical algae harvesting processes have also been outlined here.

In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were green-synthesized extracellularly by the action of bioactive compounds in cultural filtrates of green microalga Scenedesmus obliquus (KY621475). The influences of six different nitrogen sources (i.e., NaNO3, CO(NH4)2, (NH4)2CO3, KNO3, NH4NO3, and (NH4)2SO4) on extracellular biosynthesis of AgNPs were observed by UV–Visible spectroscopy (380–425 nm) and confirmed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The highest biomass production was observed in the case of urea and ammonium carbonate treatments, which, surprisingly, showed negative activity for AgNPs biosynthesis. Considering their coupling and compatible presence in cultural filtrates, reductases (especially nitrate reductase) as reduction agents are assumed to play a key role in the extracellular biosynthesis of AgNPs. The cultural filtrates of the potassium and sodium nitrate treatments produce AgNPs of relatively small size (5–10 and 4–10 nm, respectively), smaller than those produced by filtrate of ammonium nitrate treatment. The antimicrobial activity of produced AgNPs was a function mainly of particle size, which was influenced by the nitrogen source of the microalgal culture. The AgNPs produced from the KNO3 and NaNO3 cultural filtrates performed the best as antimicrobial agents.

Prospecting for robust and high-productivity strains is a strategically important step in the microalgal biodiesel process. In this study, 30 local strains of Chlorella were evaluated in photobioreactors for biodiesel production using coal-fired flue-gas. Three strains (M082, M134, and KR-1) were sequentially selected based on cell growth, lipid content, and fatty acid composition under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions. Under autotrophic conditions, M082 and M134 showed comparable lipid contents (ca. 230 mg FAME [fatty acid methyl esters derived from microalgal lipids]/g cell) and productivities (ca. 40 mg FAME/L·d) versus a reference strain (KR-1) outdoors with actual flue-gas (CO2, 13%). Interestingly, under mixotrophic conditions, M082 demonstrated, along with maximal lipid content (397 mg FAME/g cell), good tolerance to high temperature (40 °C). Furthermore, the fatty acid methyl esters met important international standards under all of the tested culture conditions. Thus, it was concluded that M082 can be a feedstock of choice for coal-fired, flue-gas-mediated biodiesel production.

In this paper, we describe the synthesis of magnesium aminoclay-iron oxide (MgAC-Fe3O4) hybrid composites for microalgae-harvesting application. MgAC-templated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in different ratios of MgAC and Fe3O4 NPs. The uniform distribution of Fe3O4 NPs in the MgAC matrix was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to obtained X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, increased MgAC loading leads to decreased intensity of the composites’ (311) plane of Fe3O4 NPs. For harvesting of Chlorella sp. KR-1, Scenedesmus obliquus and mixed microalgae (Chlorella sp. KR-1/ Scenedesmus obliquus), the optimal pH was 4.0. At higher pHs, the microalgae-harvesting efficiencies fell. Sample #1, which had the highest MgAC concentration, showed the most stability: the harvesting efficiencies for Chlorella sp. KR-1, Scenedesmus obliquus, and mixed microalgae were reduced only to ~50% at pH = 10.0. The electrostatic interaction between MgAC and the Fe3O4 NPs in the hybrid samples by microalgae, as confirmed by zeta potential measurements, were attributed to the harvesting mechanisms. Moreover, the zeta potentials of the MgAC-Fe3O4 hybrid composites were reduced as pH was increased, thus diminishing the microalgae-harvesting efficiencies.

It is known that water purified by conventional TiO2 photocatalysts may not be safe enough for drinking, due to the toxicity by tiny existence of TiO2 nanoparticles after water treatment. We herein demonstrate a facile design of a three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 photocatalyst structure with which both the efficiency of purification and the safety level of the final purified water can be improved and ensured, respectively. The structure, consisting of 3D sulfur-doped TiO2 microtubes in nanotubes (eco-TiO2), is suitable for both environmental and bio-medical applications. Investigation of its formation mechanism reveals that anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), owing to a spatial constraint, causes a simple, nanoparticles-to-nanotubes structural rearrangement as a template for nanotube growth. It is found that eco-TiO2 can be activated under visible-light irradiation by non-metal (sulfur; S) doping, after which it shows visible-light photocatalytic activities over a range of solar energy. Importantly, an in vitro cytotoxicity test of well-purified water by eco-TiO2 confirms that eco-TiO2 satisfies the key human safety conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a simple method of mass production of green carbon nanotags (G-tags) from harmful cyanobacteria, we developed an advanced and efficient imaging platform for the purpose of anticancer therapy. Approximately 100 grams of G-tags per 100 kilograms of harmful cyanobacteria were prepared using our eco-friendly approach. The G-tags possess high solubility, excellent photostability, and low cytotoxicity (<1.5 mg/mL for 24 h). Moreover, doxorubicin-conjugated G-tags (T-tags;>0.1 mg/mL) induced death in cancer cells (HepG2 and MCF-7) in-vitro at a higher rate than that of only G-tags while in-vivo mice experiment showed enhanced anticancer efficacy by T-tags at 0.01 mg/mL, indicating that the loaded doxorubicin retains its pharmaceutical activity. The cancer cell uptake and intracellular location of the Gand T-tags were observed. The results indicate that these multifunctional T-tags can deliver doxorubicin to the targeted cancer cells and sense the delivery of doxorubicin by activating the fluorescence of G-tags [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Empty fruit bunch (EFB) has many advantages, including its abundance, the fact that it does not require collection, and its year-round availability as a feedstock for bioethanol production. But before the significant costs incurred in ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass can be reduced, an efficient sugar fractionation technology has to be developed. To that end, in the present study, an NaOH-catalyzed steam pretreatment process was applied in order to produce ethanol from EFB more efficiently. Results The EFB pretreatment conditions were optimized by application of certain pretreatment variables such as, the NaOH concentrations in the soaking step and, in the steam step, the temperature and time. The optimal conditions were determined by response surface methodology (RSM) to be 3% NaOH for soaking and 160°C, 11 min 20 sec for steam pretreatment. Under these conditions, the overall glucan recovery and enzymatic digestibility were both high: the glucan and xylan yields were 93% and 78%, respectively, and the enzymatic digestibility was 88.8% for 72 h using 40 FPU/g glucan. After simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF), the maximum ethanol yield and concentration were 0.88 and 29.4 g/l respectively. Conclusions Delignification (>85%) of EFB was an important factor in enzymatic hydrolysis using CTec2. NaOH-catalyzed steam pretreatment, which can remove lignin efficiently and requires only a short reaction time, was proven to be an effective pretreatment technology for EFB. The ethanol yield obtained by SSF, the key parameter determining the economics of ethanol, was 18% (w/w), equivalent to 88% of the theoretical maximum yield, which is a better result than have been reported in the relevant previous studies. simple and reliable method based on thermogravimetric analysis has been developed for determining triacylglycerol content in Chlorella sp. KR-1. There are two decomposing steps during pyrolysis of the microalgal cells and the second step of weight loss may be attributed to degradation and volatilization of triacylglycerols. The second peak height in the temperature derivatives of weight loss increased with the triacylglycerol content of the microalgal cells and the peak was around 390°C regardless of the triacylglycerol contents. Based on these findings, a linear equation for determining triacylglycerol content was derived. In this report, a genome-scale reconstruction of Bacillus subtilis metabolism and its iterative development based on the combination of genomic, biochemical, and physiological information and high-throughput phenotyping experiments is presented. The initial reconstruction was converted into an in silico model and expanded in a four-step iterative fashion, First, network gap analysis was used to identify 48 missing reactions that are needed for growth but were not found in the genome annotation. Second, the computed growth rates under aerobic conditions were compared with high-throughput phenotypic screen data, and the initial in silico model could predict the outcomes qualitatively in 140 of 271 cases considered. Detailed analysis of the incorrect predictions resulted in the addition of 75 reactions to the initial reconstruction, and 200 of 271 cases were correctly computed. Third, in silico computations of the growth phenotypes of knock-out strains were found to be consistent with experimental observations in 720 of 766 cases evaluated. Fourth, the integrated analysis of the large-scale substrate utilization and gene essentiality data with the genome-scale metabolic model revealed the requirement of 80 specific enzymes (transport, 53; intracellular reactions, 27) that were not in the genome annotation. Subsequent sequence analysis resulted in the identification of genes that could be putatively assigned to 13 intracellular enzymes. The final reconstruction accounted for 844 open reading frames and consisted of 1020 metabolic reactions and 988 metabolites. Caseinomacropeptide is a polypeptide of 64 amino acid residues (106-169) derived from the C-terminal part of the mammalian milk k-casein. This macropeptide has various biological activities and is used as a functional food ingredient as well as a pharmaceutical compound. The gene encoding the human caseinomacropeptide (hCMP) was synthesized and expressed with an α-factor secretion signal in the two yeast strains, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris. The complete polypeptide of the recombinant hCMP was produced and secreted in a culture medium by both the strains, but the highest production was observed in S. cerevisiae with a galactose-inducible promoter. Microalgae, as biodiesel feedstock, are promising renewable energy sources that can be continuously developed into the future. Because recovery of microalgal lipid from dry microalgae incurs high costs, particularly in the dewatering process, wet extraction has been suggested as an attractive alternative approach. In the present study, the feasibility of a sonication-assisted homogenization system for lipid extraction from Chlorella vulgaris was evaluated. To that end, lipid-extraction performance, according to reaction time, cell concentration, and solvent type, was investigated. The initial fatty acid content of the C. vulgaris was 360.2 mg/g cell. The combination of sonication and homogenization broke up the microalgal cell walls, thereby facilitating lipid recovery. By this method, the lipid-recovery yields were increased compared with that by solo use of either homogenization or sonication. Further, chloroform-methanol, as a recovery solvent, significantly enhanced lipid recovery (237.5 mg lipid/g cell at 60 min reaction time) relative to hexane (152.0 mg lipid/g cell at 60 min reaction time). The plasma treatment method was employed to characterize nitrogen (N)-doped nanoporous TiO2 photocatalysts (N-nTiO2) of ~18 nm diameter. With respect to the organic dye degradation efficiencies and antibacterial properties after exposure to visible-light irradiation, N-nTiO2 showed better performance than the alternative commercial 5 nm anatase TiO2 (TiO2), as-grown nanoporous TiO2 (as-grown nTiO2), and Ar-plasma-treated nanoporous TiO2 (nTiO2) photocatalysts. This was attributed mainly to N-nTiO2's higher anatase/brookite phase crystallinity and large surface area (375.9 m² g-¹). The N doping of N-nTiO2 was confirmed by a shift of ~0.25° toward the higher angles in the XRD patterns and high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS) surface analysis results. Additionally, N-nTiO2's total surface energy was significantly increased. Its photoluminescence (PL) response and apparent quantum yield inhibited the recombination of holes and electrons and decreased the band-gap energy (Eg < 3.2 eV), both of which contribute to activation in an expanded visible-light range. Ultraviolet (UV) and visible-light irradiation of the organic dye model Rhodamine B (Rho B), both of 70 min duration, resulted in rate constants of 3.381 and 4.269 h-¹ for N-nTiO2, respectively. In contrast, under exposure to visible light, the value for nTiO2 was 0.395 h-¹. Moreover, the antibacterial activity indicated that ~100% of both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were destroyed after 30 min visible-light irradiation while photostability was maintained. Considering all of these results, it was concluded that N-nTiO 2 is an excellent solar-light-activated photocatalyst candidate for water/waste treatment and medical applications. In the present study, a simple magnetic-particle recycling strategy was developed for harvest of the oleaginous microalga Chlorella sp. KR-1. The method entails the flocculation of microalgal cells and bare-Fe3O4 magnetic particles (bMP) by electrostatic attraction and the subsequent recovery of the bMP from the harvested flocs by electrostatic repulsion below and above the isoelectric points (IEP), respectively. For 10 recycles, the bMP showed 94-99% and 90-97% harvest and recovery efficiencies, respectively. Furthermore, neither the use of bMP nor pH adjustment showed any adverse effect on the microalgal cell growth or the co-existing bacterial species, as confirmed from the subsequent medium-recycling test and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis. Microalgal lipid with a high free fatty acid (FFA) content was directly extracted from Chlorella vulgaris, using SDBS, in an acid-catalyzed hot-water extraction process. The total fatty acid content of C. vulgaris was 296.0 mg/g cell. Under the 1.0% sulfuric acid, 0.4% SDBS conditions, the FFA content of the lipid increased to 96.7%, and the lipid-extraction yield was 248.4 mg/g cell. Under the 2.0% sulfuric acid, 0.2% SDBS conditions, the FFA content of the lipid was 96.1%, and the lipid-extraction yield was 266.0 mg/g cell. Whereas the FAME content of the microalgal lipid extracted by hexane-methanol was 76.4% at the 10.0% sulfuric acid concentration, the FAME content of the high-FFA microalgal lipid was increased to 70.1% at a sulfuric acid concentration of only 0.1%. By combined sulfuric acid/SDBS treatment, high-FFA microalgal lipid was extracted in large yields; moreover, the amount of catalyst was remarkably reduced in the esterification of FFA.
