The impact wear mechanism of compacted graphite cast iron (CGI) at different temperatures (room temperature, 300 °C, 400 °C, and 500 °C) and impact frequencies (10 Hz, 12 Hz, and 14 Hz) was analyzed. The mass losses increase with test temperatures, impact frequencies and numbers. When the temperature increases to 500 °C, shallow, deep-spalling, and oxidation are the main wear mechanism of CGI. Metal oxides are generated and shed repeatedly, which can accelerate the impact wear of CGI. In addition, there are mainly two cracking modes during the impact wear test (I) Micro-cracks can generate preferentially in the graphite cavities, caused by surficial graphite falling off affected by the high-frequency shocks. The graphite cavities and micro-cracks can coalesce with each other to form the main crack (Ⅱ) The hard metal particles due to fatigue spalling can inset in the soft matrix and cause cracking.

Titanium alloys are considered one of the most promising materials. However, their poor thermal expansion property remains a major obstacle to their widespread application. In this study, we explored an innovative design strategy to tune the thermal expansion properties of titanium alloy. Specifically, we used rare earth iron intermetallic compounds (Gd-Fe IMCs) with low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) as expansion inhibitors to prepare composites with the required thermal expansion properties via in situ reaction. The morphology and size of Gd-Fe IMCs can be effectively controlled by electromagnetic and ultrasonic fields, resulting in a dense distribution of micro/nano-structured Gd-Fe IMCs and strong interfacial bonding of the composites. This alloy has an excellent CTE of 6.8 × 10 ^−6 /K and a high ultimate tensile strength of 921 MPa. The improvement in the physical properties (especially in thermal expansion properties) of titanium alloy can be attributed to the synergistic effect between Gd-Fe IMCs and Ti matrix. This design strategy can also be extended to other titanium alloys as a reference for designing low thermal expansion titanium alloys.

Tumor hypoxia is responsible for the reduced therapeutic efficacy of type II photodynamic therapy (PDT) because of the dependence of cellular oxygen during 1O2 generation. Type I PDT may be a better strategy to overcome the disadvantages of hypoxia for enhanced theranostics. Herein, a new semiconducting polymer PDPP was synthesized and encapsulated with hydrophilic PEG-PDPA to enhance the electron transfer for type I PDT. PDPP NPs show a high superoxide radical generation ability with DHR123 as a probe. In vitro MTT assay indicates PDPP NPs with considerably high phototoxicity on human cervical cancer cells (HeLa) with a low half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 6.1 μg/ml. Furthermore, an in vivo study demonstrates that PDPP NPs can lead to complete tumor suppression with the help of laser, compared with the control and dark groups. The biosafety is confirmed by the H&E analysis of the normal tissues (the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidney). The results provide a strategy to design nanosystems for type I PDT and PTT synergistic therapy.

To understand the surface evolution in unsteady thermal environment of diesel engine, piston Al–Si–Cu alloy was ablated by a high frequent pulsing carburizing oxyacetylene combustion. The tested samples displayed good correlation with the characteristics of some bench tested pistons. As the loading cycles increased, the roughness slightly declined first and then rose sharply. Hardness evolution, micro-morphology, element and phase analysis suggested the surface roughness was mainly controlled by the thermal stress induced defects. And in combination with thermodynamics, the source of Al in surface deposited rimous carbon was ascertained to be chemical reactions between carburizing combustion and the Al–Si–Cu alloy.

A Ti40Zr40Ni20 quasicrystal (QCs) rod and ribbons were prepared by conventional casting and rapid solidification. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) techniques were used to investigate the microtissue, phase composition, and solidification features of the samples; the nano-indentation test was carried out at room temperature. The results show that a mixture of the α-Ti(Zr) phase and the icosahedral quasicrystal (I-phase) was formed in the Ti40Zr40Ni20 rod; the microstructure of Ti40Zr40Ni20 ribbons mainly consisted of the I-phase. The solidification mechanism of the I-phase was different in the two alloys. The I-phase in the quasicrystalline rod was formed by packet reaction while in the ribbons it was generated directly from the liquid. At room temperature, both samples had relatively high hardness and elastic modulus; the elastic modulus of the ribbons is 76 GPa, higher than the 45 GPa of the rod. The hardness of the ribbons was more than twice that of the rod.

With the consumption of high-quality iron ore resources, the grade of iron ore raw used in the iron making process has gradually decreased. The high aluminum raw materials has led to an increase in the Al2O3 content in the blast furnace slag, which has affected the normal operation of the blast furnace. The activity of the components involved in the desulfurization reaction is an important factor affecting the desulfurization process. In this paper, the effects of B(w(CaO)/w(SiO2)) and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) on the desulfurization ability of a CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 quaternary blast furnace slag system were studied by using a double-layer graphite crucible to simulate the process of molten iron dropping through the slag at 1773 K. The desulfurization reaction mechanism of high alumina blast furnace slag is explained from the aspects of slag structure and component activity, which provides a theoretical basis for the reasonable selection of a slag making system under the condition of a high alumina content. The effects of different B and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) on the slag structure 2343 analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results show that when w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) = 0.50 and w(Al2O3) = 20%, the desulfurization ability and MgO activity of slag increased with the increase of B; when w(Al2O3) = 20% and B = 1.30, the desulfurization ability and MgO activity of the slag increased with the increase of w(MgO)/w(Al2O3). The FT-IR analysis showed that with the increase of B or w(MgO)/w(Al2O3), the dissociated free oxygen ions (O2−) in the slag increased, and the dissociated free oxygen ions (O2−) interacted with the bridging oxygen (O0) of silicate, which made the complex Si-O structure in the slag gradually depolymerize and increase the desulfurization ability.

Two-dimensional FE models of CGI with different pearlite contents for thermal conductivity analysis were established according to the real metallographic images obtained by Pro/E and ANSYS. Meanwhile, thermal conductivity of CGI with different pearlite contents was tested through the laser flash method. It is indicated that the thermal conductivity of CGI declines with the increase of pearlite. When pearlite is increased from 10% to 80%, the experimental values decline from 46.63 W/m·K to 36.86 W/m·K, reducing by 21%. However, this declining tendency becomes gentle and slight when pearlite is more than 40%. In addition, the calculation results with the consideration of interfacial contact thermal conductance (ICTC) and pearlite are much close to experimental values; especially when pearlite is 80%, the difference between them is only about 2%. It can be concluded that the FE models are convenient and reasonable to analyze thermal conductivity of CGI.

In this study, Fe-25Mn-xAl-8Ni-C alloys (x = 10 wt.%, 11 wt.%, 12 wt.%, 13 wt.%) were prepared by a vacuum arc melting method, and the microstructure of this series of alloys and the in situ tensile deformation behavior were studied. The results showed that Fe-25Mn-xAl-8Ni-C alloys mainly contained austenite phase with a small amount of NiAl compound. With the content of Al increasing, the amount of austenite decreased while the amount of NiAl compound increased. When the Al content increased to 12 wt.%, the interface between austenite and NiAl compound and austenitic internal started to precipitate k-carbide phase. In situ tensile results also showed that as the content of Al increased, the alloy elongation decreased gradually, and the tensile strength first increased and then decreased. When the Al content was up to 11 wt.%, the elongation and tensile strength were 2.6% and 702.5 MPa, respectively; the results of in situ tensile dynamic observations show that during the process of stretching, austenite deformed first, and crack initiation mainly occurred at the interface between austenite and NiAl compound, and propagated along the interface, resulting in fracture of the alloy.

Plasma-sprayed nickel-based self-fusion alloy coatings were annealed in a vacuum at 990, 1020 and 1050 °C for 20 min to increase the bonding between the compacted graphite cast iron substrate and coating, as well as the inner cohesion of the coatings. It was found that nickel and chromium diffused between nickel-based alloy coatings and compacted graphite cast iron substrate. A metallurgical translation zone with a thickness up to 1145 μm formed during the vacuum annealing, which resulted in an enhancement of the adhesion between the coating and substrate. The adhesion strength at room temperature was increased from the as-sprayed coating of 33.4 MPa to the annealed one of 163 MPa. Meanwhile, the adhesion strength at 500 °C reached 146 MPa. Conversely, the inner cohesion of the coating was improved with the particles’ interfaces healed after vacuum annealing. The micro-hardness of the annealed coatings was increased to 902 HV from the as-sprayed one of 578 HV.

In the present paper, the microstructures of three kinds of in-situ reinforcements Al-Ti-C, Al-Ti-B, and Al-Ti-B-C-Ce were deeply investigated using a combination of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The effect of in-situ reinforcements on the room temperature and elevated temperature (350 °C) tensile strengths of Al-13Si-4Cu-1Mg-2Ni alloy were analyzed. It is found that doping with trace amounts of B and Ce, the size of the Al3Ti phase in the in-situ reinforced alloy changed from 80 µm (un-reinforced) to about 10 µm, with the simultaneous formation of the AlTiCe phase. The Al-Ti-B-C-Ce reinforcement which is rapid solidified, was more effective and superior to enhance the tensile strengths of the Al-13Si-4Cu-1Mg-2Ni alloy, both at room and high temperatures than those of addition other reinforcements. The room temperature (RT) strength increased by 19.0%, and the 350 °C-strength increased by 18.4%.

For this study, Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Cr-1C-xMo alloys (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 wt%) were prepared by mechanical alloying combined with vacuum hot-pressing sintering. The corresponding microstructure, mechanical properties, and friction and wear properties under different working conditions (dry friction, oil lubrication and sulfur-containing boundary lubrication) of materials were studied. The results show that the Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Cr-1C alloy is mainly composed of the austenite phase, Cr7C3 phase, and a small amount of a-Al2O3 phase. After adding Mo element, the Fe2MoC phase appears. With the increase of Mo content, the tensile strength and elongation of the alloys increase first and then decrease. In particular, when the Mo content is 0.3 wt%, an excellent combination of strength and toughness is obtained. The product of strength and elongation of the Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Cr-1C-0.3Mo alloy reaches a maximum value of 3.69 GPa⋅%, which is improved by 158.04% compared with the matrix alloys. With the increase of Mo content, the average friction coefficient and volume wear rate of the alloys show a trend of first decreasing and then increasing under different working conditions. Also, the average friction coefficient and volume wear rate of the alloy with 0.3 wt% Mo reach a minimum value, especially under the condition of sulfur-containing boundary lubrication. The average friction coefficient and volume wear rate of Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Cr-1C-0.3Mo alloy are 0.051 and 0.222×10-4 mm3⋅N-1⋅m-1, respectively, which are 40.69% and 46.38% lower than those of the matrix alloys. A ZrO2-Al2O3 ceramic coating and YSZ-Al2O3 coating were prepared on ZAlSil2Cu3Ni2 alloys by a modified plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) in zirconium salt solution. The microstructure, heat-insulating and high temperature oxidation properties were investigated by SEM, XRD and a fabricated heat insulation temperature testing device. The results showed that the surface of the YSZ-Al2O3 coating was composed of fine particles and had lower roughness. Yttrium partially stabilized the zirconia solid solution (YZrO which was formed in zirconium yttrium salt solution with a higher reaction temperature. The growth rate of the YSZ-Al2O3 coating was greater than the ZrO2-Al2O3 coating. Especially, the outward growth obviously improves. Furthermore, the heat insulation property of the coating enhances. The curves of the weight gains in the sample with YSZ-Al2O3 coating showed a logarithmic shape under the high temperature oxidation treatment of 400C. The weight gains of the sample with YSZ-Al2O3 coating were relatively lower than that of the as-coated sample. The ceramic layer had good high temperature stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical fraction of Heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Cr and Pb) in surface sediments from Yinchuan section of Yellow River in China were measured by a sequential extraction to evaluate the distribution and pollution level of heavy metals. The metals in sediments were found to be in the range of Fe, 21240.0-29143.3 mg/kg, Mn, 485.27-674.83 mg/kg; Cr, 5.66-15.86 mg/kg; Ni, 29.25-53.40 mg/kg; Pb, 0.32-4.55 mg/kg; Cd, 0.73- 1.11 mg/kg; Zn, 75.87-89.33 mg/kg, and Cu, 18.83- 28.89 mg/kg. The arrangement of metal contents from higher to lower was: Fe>Mn>Zn>Ni>Cu>Cr>Pb>Cd. Fe, Mn and Cu performed common origin according to their correlations. The quantity of immobile fraction (residual) was observed to be higher when compared with mobile fraction (acid soluble, reducible, and oxidizable) of Fe, Zn, Cd and Cr. The highly enrichment factors of Cd, Cr and Pb could create a high environmental risk. The order of contamination level for heavy metals in sediment was Cr>Pb> Cd>Cu>Fe>Ni>Mn>Zn on the basis of performance of enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index and pollution load index.
