Sorbitol is a critical photosynthate and storage substance in the Rosaceae family. Sorbitol 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (S6PDH) functions as the pivotal rate-limiting enzyme in sorbitol synthesis. The origin and functional diversification of S6PDH in Rosaceae remain unclear, largely due to the complicated interplay of gene duplications. Here, we investigated the synteny relationships among all identified S6PDH genes in representative genomes within the Rosaceae family. By integrating phylogenetic analyses, we elucidated the lineage-specific expansion and syntenic conservation of S6PDH across diverse Rosaceae plant lineages. We found that S6PDH can be traced back to a pair of proximal duplicated genes of the common ancestor of the Rosaceae, and the further amplification of S6PDH in the Maleae primarily relies on WGD events in their lineages. In Rosaceae species, multiple copies of the S6PDH gene are preliminarily divided into two main clades (Clade 1 and Clade 2) based on sequence similarity. These clades have evolved to acquire different functional directions. In Clade 1, lineage-specific transposition events in the Amygdaloideae have led to changes in gene expression patterns and promoted lineage evolution. This is mainly characterized by a decrease in enzymatic activity and transcriptional expression in the leaves, but also includes specific functional diversification, such as sustained post-harvest fruit expression and enhanced expression under biotic stress in certain tissues. In contrast, S6PDH in the Rosoideae and Dryadoideae has not undergone additional duplications beyond early proximal duplication. The loss of exons and variations in exon length might the key factor leading to reduced enzymatic activity in the Clade 2 proximal gene pairs. Collectively, our findings illuminate the dynamic nature of S6PDH evolution and reveal the intricate interplay between duplication, transposition, and functional diversification. This work not only contributes valuable insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying sorbitol metabolism but also establish a crucial foundation for future investigations aimed at comprehensively characterizing the variations of sorbitol metabolism across different subfamilies within the Rosaceae family.

Dust pollution is a major problem formed caused by opencast coal mining, and its prevention is a key prerequisite for the realization of green and climate-friendly mining in open-pit coal mines. In this paper, we conducted the real-time monitoring of dust concentration and meteorological parameter data in different areas of a large-scale open-pit coal mine in China and used multivariate statistical analysis to study the characteristics of the variation in dust concentration and its influencing factors in operating and non-operating areas. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 in the same area. There was a significant difference in the percentage of PM2.5/PM10 between the operation area and the non-operation area, with particles in the range of 2.5–10 μm dominating close to the operation area and particles in the range of 0–2.5 μm dominating away from the operation area. The production intensity had a greater effect on dust concentration in the operation area, and there was no significant relationship with dust concentration away from the operation area. Wind speed—wind force—wind direction, temperature, and humidity are all correlated with particulate matter. The LSTM model is more suitable for predicting the dust concentration in open-pit coal mines. The results of this study can provide a reference for dust prevention and control in open-pit coal mines.

AbstractIn present, there was no detailed report on the formulation optimization and quality evaluation of aprepitant (APT) injectable lipid emulsion (APT-IE). The aim of the present investigation was to prepare and evaluate its properties of APT-IE loaded with an APT phospholipid complex (APT-PC) in vitro and in vivo. APT-PC was obtained by solvent evaporation with APT and phospholipids, then analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Lipid emulsions are a new formulation that can reduce side effects and improve drug loading.APT-IE prepared by High-pressure homogenization and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The proportion of sodium oleate, poloxamer 188 and soybean oil were selected as variables for the optimization. The optimal formulation of ATP-IE had the following characteristics: particle size, 82.83 ± 1.89 nm; polydispersity index, 0.243 ± 0.008; zeta potential, −59.0 ± 2.54 mV; encapsulation efficiency, 98.84%±1.43%; drug loading, 7.08 ± 0.16 mg/mL; and osmotic pressure, 301 ± 2.15 mOsmol/kg. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the particle diameter of APT-IE was approximately 100 nm, with a morphology of spheroidal or spherical. APT-IE exhibited sufficient stability after storage at 4 ± 2 °C for more than 6 months. The results of the pharmacokinetic study demonstrated that APT-IE had the advantages of better safety, higher bioavailability, and obvious liver targeting than APT solution (APT-SL). The area under the curve (AUC) of APT-IE was 3-fold enhanced compared with APT-SL. The targeted enhancement multiple of APT-IE to liver tissue was greater than that of APT-SL. These results suggested that APT-IE has broad clinical application and industrial production potential.

Pesticides and heavy metals commonly coexist in soil. In this study, the influence of Cd and Cu on the toxicity of rac-dinotefuran and the enantioselective behavior of dinotefuran enantiomers in soil-earthworm microcosms were investigated. The acute toxic tests showed that S-dinotefuran has higher toxic than that of R-dinotefuran. The rac-dinotefuran and Cd has an antagonistic effect on earthworms, and the Cu and rac-dinotefuran has a synergistic effect. Earthworms maybe promoted the enantioselective behavior of dinotefuran in soil. Co-exposure to Cd or Cu inhibited the dissipation of dinotefuran enantiomers (S-dinotefuran and R-enantiomers), and slightly reduced the enantioselectivity in soil. The earthworms were found to be preferentially enriched with S-dinotefuran. However, Cd or Cu attenuated the accumulation of dinotefuran enantiomers in earthworms and decreased the enantioselectivity. The effect of Cd and Cu on the environmental behaviors of dinotefuran enantiomers were correlated positively with the dose of Cd/Cu. These results showed that Cd and Cu alter the environmental behaviors and the toxicity of dinotefuran enantiomers in soil-earthworm microcosms. Thus, the influence of coexistent heavy metals on the ecological risk assessment of chiral pesticides should be considered.

ABSTRACT The composition and structure of fungal communities on healthy and diseased fruits of Cinnamomum burmannii (Nees and Nees) Blume were characterized, with evaluation of the antibacterial activity of secondary metabolites from culturable fungi following the first identification of secondary metabolites in the fungus Medicopsis romeroi (Esf-14; GenBank accession number OK242756). These results are significant for understanding the functional variation in bioactivity in fungal communities and developing a broader range of bioactive resources. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that the fungal community in diseased fruit differed from that in healthy fruit at the phylum, class, order, or genus level, with significant differences in the species and relative abundance of the dominant flora. A total of 49 (healthy fruit) and 122 (diseased fruit) artificially cultivable endophytic fungi were isolated, and 41 different strains (11 from healthy fruit and 30 from diseased fruit) were successfully identified by morphological and molecular biological analyses, which were classified into 8 groups and 23 genera by phylogenetic tree analysis, with Pleosporales, Glomerellales, and Hypocreales being the dominant groups at the order level and Colletotrichum being the dominant group at the genus level. The results of the antibacterial assay demonstrated that the secondary metabolites of all strains had different degrees of antibacterial activity, while the secondary metabolites of endophytic fungi from diseased fruit were generally stronger than those of fungi from healthy fruit, with the active secondary metabolites dominated by small and moderately polar compounds. Combined analysis of fungal communities, phylogenetic tree analysis, and bioactivity analysis of culturable strains revealed strong antibacterial activity of both upregulated and downregulated flora in diseased fruit. Five compounds, including two new (5,6-dimethoxy-[1′,1:4,1″-terphenyl]-2-ol [compound 1] and 5-(methoxycarbonyl)-2-methylbenzo[d][1,3]dioxole-2-carboxylic acid [compound 2]) and three known compounds (3,7-dihydroxy-1,9-dimethyldibenzofuran [compound 3], methyl 3-hydroxybenzoate [compound 4], and uracil [compound 5]), were isolated and identified for the first time from the endophytic fungus Medicopsis romeroi. In general, the diversity of fungal communities on diseased fruit was lower than that on healthy fruits, while the antibacterial activity of artificially cultured endophytic fungi on diseased fruits was generally stronger than that on healthy fruits, suggesting excellent promise for the development of secondary metabolites from active strains on diseased fruit as antibacterial agents. IMPORTANCE Powdery fruit disease is a notorious disease of Cinnamomum burmannii that causes severe loss in fruit production. Studies on the function of endophytic fungal communities in healthy plant tissues are not new, while little is known about the functional changes of fungal communities in disease-causing plant tissues. Our results demonstrate that fungal communities in diseased fruits differ from those in healthy fruits at the level of phylum, class, order, or genus, with significant differences in the species and relative abundance of dominant groups. Endophytic fungi in diseased fruits appeared to produce secondary metabolites with stronger antibacterial properties, although the community diversity was not as varied as that in healthy fruits. In addition, secondary metabolites of the Medicopsis romeroi strain from diseased fruits were identified for the first time. These results have important implications for understanding the functional variation of bioactivity in fungal communities and for developing a broader resource of bioactivity.

Highly nutritious traditional plants which are rich in bioactive substances are attracting increasing attention. In this study, the nutritional value, chemical composition, biological activities, and feed indices of different parts of Millettia speciosa were comprehensively evaluated. In terms of its nutritional value, this study demonstrated that the leaves, flowers and seeds of M. speciosa were rich in elements and amino acids; the biological values (BVs) of these ingredients ranged from 85% to 100%, showing the extremely high nutritional value of this plant. GC-MS analysis suggested that the main chemical components of the flower volatile oil were n-hexadecanoic acid (21.73%), tetracosane (19.96%), and pentacosane (5.86%). The antibacterial activities of the flower and seed extracts were significantly stronger than those of the leaves and branches. The leaf extract displayed the strongest antifungal activities (EC50 values: 18.28 ± 0.54 μg/mL for Pseudocryphonectria elaeocarpicola and 568.21 ± 33.60 μg/mL for Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) and were the least toxic to mouse fibroblasts (L929) (IC50 value: 0.71 ± 0.04 mg/mL), while flowers were the most toxic (IC50 value: 0.27 ± 0.03 mg/mL). In addition, the abundance of fiber, protein, mineral elements, and functional metabolite contents indicated the potential applicability of M. speciosa as an animal feed. In conclusion, as a traditional herbal plant used for medicinal and food purposes, M. speciosa shows potential for safe and multifunctional development.

Heterosis, the phenomenon in which hybrids outperform their parents, has been utilized in maize (Zea mays L.) for over 100 years. To provide a more complete understanding of heterosis, we collected a comprehensive transcriptome and translatome dataset on seedling leaves for B73, Mo17, and their F1 hybrid, which provided a dynamic landscape of transcriptomic and translatomic variation in maize. Although additivity accounted for a large proportion of variation at two omics-levels, an elevated nonadditive effect was observed in the translatome, especially in the translated subgenome maize1 genes, and the genes that switched from additivity in the transcriptome to nonadditivity in the translatome were significantly enriched in the subgenome maize1. Many genes with allele-specific expression and translation show dramatic regulatory switches between the transcriptome and translatome, and partial genes with allele-specific translation underlying regulatory mechanism also exhibited subgenome bias. Interestingly, we found the translated isoforms show different expression patterns compared with transcriptome and more genes changed their dominant isoforms during the genetic flow from parents to the hybrid at the translatome level. The translated genes with switched dominant isoforms significantly biased to the subgenome maize2 while genes with conserved dominant isoforms significantly enriched in subgenome maize1. Together, the dynamic changed patterns in translatome across hybrid and parental lines show translational fractionation of the maize subgenomes, which may be associated with heterosis in maize and provides a potential theoretical basis for breeding.

The aim of this investigation was to develop an etomidate intravenous lipid emulsion (ETM-ILE) and evaluate its properties in vitro and in vivo. Etomidate (ETM) is a hydrophobic drug, and organic solvents must be added to an etomidate injectable solution (ETM-SOL) to aid dissolution, that causes various adverse reactions on injection. Lipid emulsions are a novel drug formulation that can improve drug loading and reduce adverse reactions. ETM-ILE was prepared using high-pressure homogenization. Univariate experiments were performed to select key conditions and variables. The proportion of oil, egg lecithin, and poloxamer 188 (F68) served as variables for the optimization of the ETM-ILE formulation by central composite design response surface methodology. The optimized formulation had the following characteristics: particle size, 168.0 ± 0.3 nm; polydispersity index, 0.108 ± 0.028; zeta potential, −36.4 ± 0.2 mV; drug loading, 2.00 ± 0.01 mg/mL; encapsulation efficiency, 97.65% ± 0.16%; osmotic pressure, 292 ± 2 mOsmol/kg and pH value, 7.63 ± 0.07. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the particles were spherical or spheroidal, with a diameter of approximately 200 nm. The stability study suggested that ETM-ILE could store at 4 ± 2 °C or 25 ± 2 °C for 12 months. Safety tests showed that ETM-ILE did not cause hemolysis or serious vascular irritation. The results of the pharmacokinetic study found that ETM-ILE was bioequivalent to ETM-SOL. However, a higher concentration of ETM was attained in the liver, spleen, and lungs after administration of ETM-ILE than after administration of ETM-SOL. This study found that ETM-ILE had great potential for clinical applications.

The level of hydrogen ions in sweat is one of the most important physiological indexes for the health state of the human body. As a type of two-dimensional (2D) material, MXene has the advantages of superior electrical conductivity, a large surface area, and rich functional groups on the surface. Herein, we report a type of Ti3C2Tx-based potentiometric pH sensor for wearable sweat pH analysis. The Ti3C2Tx was prepared by two etching methods, including a mild LiF/HCl mixture and HF solution, which was directly used as the pH-sensitive materials. Both etched Ti3C2Tx showed a typical lamellar structure and exhibited enhanced potentiometric pH responses compared with a pristine precursor of Ti3AlC2. The HF-Ti3C2Tx disclosed the sensitivities of −43.51 ± 0.53 mV pH–1 (pH 1–11) and −42.73 ± 0.61 mV pH–1 (pH 11–1). A series of electrochemical tests demonstrated that HF-Ti3C2Tx exhibited better analytical performances, including sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility, owing to deep etching. The HF-Ti3C2Tx was thus further fabricated as a flexible potentiometric pH sensor by virtue of its 2D characteristic. Upon integrating with a solid-contact Ag/AgCl reference electrode, the flexible sensor realized real-time monitoring of pH level in human sweat. The result disclosed a relatively stable pH value of ~6.5 after perspiration, which was consistent with the ex situ sweat pH test. This work offers a type of MXene-based potentiometric pH sensor for wearable sweat pH monitoring.

Solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) exhibit great potential in the detection of routine and portable ions which rely on solid-contact (SC) materials for the transduction of ions to electron signals. Carbon-based materials are state-of-the-art SC transducers due to their high electrical double-layer (EDL) capacitance and hydrophobicity. However, researchers have long searched for ways to enhance the interfacial capacitance in order to improve the potential stability. Herein, three representative carbon-based SC materials including nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were compared. The results disclose that the NMC has the highest EDL capacitance owing to its mesopore structure and N-doping while maintaining high hydrophobicity so that no obvious water-layer effect was observed. The Ca2+-SC-ISEs based on the SC of NMC exhibited high potential stability compared with RGO and CNT. This work offers a guideline for the development of carbon-material-based SC-ISEs through mesoporous and N-doping engineering to improve the interfacial capacitance. The developed NMC-based solid-contact Ca2+-SC-ISE exhibited a Nernstian slope of 26.3 ± 3.1 mV dec−1 ranging from 10 μM to 0.1 M with a detection limit of 3.2 μM. Finally, a practical application using NMC-based SC-ISEs was demonstrated through Ca2+ ion analysis in mineral water and soil leaching solutions.

Medical applications of nanotechnology are promising in creating efficient and targeted therapies. However, so far, nanodrug design has not taken into consideration possible effects on human microbiota. The beneficial functions of bacteria could be stimulated by nanodrugs while negative effects on beneficial bacteria could cause risks to human health. Here, simulated intestinal fluid (IF) was optimized for culturing a human commensal and probiotic bacterial strain, Lactobacillus casei, to study the effects of medically relevant NPs—Ag and hyaluronic acid-coated Au NPs (HA-Au NPs)—in conditions pertinent to the gastrointestinal tract. When cultivated either aerobically or anaerobically, the specific growth rates of L. casei were ~0.2 h−1 in IF and ~0.4 h−1 in the standard medium of lactobacilli (MRS). Ag NPs inhibited the growth of L. casei in IF at lower concentrations (EC50 ~ 65 and 15 mg/L in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively) than in MRS (EC50 > 100 mg/L), likely caused by differences in the composition of the two media and different intrinsic growth rates of bacteria in IF and MRS. Ag NP dissolution in IF and MRS did not explain the differences in growth inhibition, implying NP-specific effects. HA-Au NPs were not growth-inhibitory to L. casei up to 250 mg/L. Still, both NPs at sub-growth-inhibitory concentrations suppressed the expression of bacteriocin genes in L. casei, suggesting an inhibitory effect of NPs on the probiotic properties of L. casei, i.e., its competitiveness in microbial communities. However, HA-Au NPs did not appear to affect or even stimulated the immunomodulatory properties of L. casei in human intestinal epithelial cells. Thus, medically relevant NPs at low, sub-bacteriostatic levels can affect the metabolism of beneficial human bacteria and potentially induce changes in the microbiota and immune signaling.

The PID control algorithm for balancing robot attitude control suffers from the problem of difficult parameter tuning. Previous studies have proposed using metaheuristic algorithms to tune the PID parameters. However, traditional metaheuristic algorithms are subject to the criticism of premature convergence and the possibility of falling into local optimum solutions. Therefore, the present paper proposes a CFHBA-PID algorithm for balancing robot Dual-loop PID attitude control based on Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) and CF-ITAE. On the one hand, HBA maintains a sufficiently large population diversity throughout the search process and employs a dynamic search strategy for balanced exploration and exploitation, effectively avoiding the problems of classical intelligent optimization algorithms and serving as a global search. On the other hand, a novel complementary factor (CF) is proposed to complement integrated time absolute error (ITAE) with the overshoot amount, resulting in a new rectification indicator CF-ITAE, which balances the overshoot amount and the response time during parameter tuning. Using balancing robot as the experimental object, HBA-PID is compared with AOA-PID, WOA-PID, and PSO-PID, and the results demonstrate that HBA-PID outperforms the other three algorithms in terms of overshoot amount, stabilization time, ITAE, and convergence speed, proving that the algorithm combining HBA with PID is better than the existing mainstream algorithms. The comparative experiments using CF prove that CFHBA-PID is able to effectively control the overshoot amount in attitude control. In conclusion, the CFHBA-PID algorithm has great control and significant results when applied to the balancing robot.

Recycling biomass waste into functional materials has attracted much attention, and a rational structural design can make more effective use of each component. In our previous work, the fabrication of electrospun cellulose-acetate (CA)/chitosan (CS) adsorbents for humic-acid (HA) removal guided by the intermolecular interaction mechanism was demonstrated. Herein, a core-sheath structure was designed via one-step co-axial electrospinning, where a mixture of CS and CA was employed as the sheath layer to efficiently adsorb HA, and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) derived from waste cotton fabrics were incorporated into the CA core as load-bearing components. Compared to the non-layered electrospun CS/CA fibers, all the CS/CA–CNC fibers with a core-sheath structure exhibited smaller diameters, greater homogeneity, and significantly improved mechanical strength. Meanwhile, their maximum adsorption capacities towards HA had no significant differences. Even after the complete hydrolysis of CA into cellulose, the electrospun fibers maintained the fibrous structures and showed a higher tensile strength while exhibiting an acceptable adsorption capacity towards HA. Therefore, this work demonstrates the importance of rational design in the efficient preparation of functional materials and the feasibility of using electrospun core-sheath fibers derived from biomass wastes for the removal of water contaminants.

Abstract Background Plant height (PH) and ear height (EH) are two important agronomic traits in maize selection breeding. F1 hybrid exhibit significant heterosis for PH and EH as compared to their parental inbred lines. To understand the genetic basis of heterosis controlling PH and EH, we conducted quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis using a recombinant inbreed line (RIL) based design III population derived from the elite maize hybrid Zhengdan 958 in five environments. Results A total of 14 environmentally stable QTLs were identified, and the number of QTLs for Z1 and Z2 populations was six and eight, respectively. Notably, all the eight environmentally stable QTLs for Z2 were characterized by overdominance effect (OD), suggesting that overdominant QTLs were the most important contributors to heterosis for PH and EH. Furthermore, 14 environmentally stable QTLs were anchored on six genomic regions, among which four are trait-specific QTLs, suggesting that the genetic basis for PH and EH is partially different. Additionally, qPH.A-1.3, modifying about 10 centimeters of PH, was further validated in backcross populations. Conclusions The genetic basis for PH and EH is partially different, and overdominant QTLs are important factors for heterosis of PH and EH. A major QTL qPH.A-1.3 may be a desired target for genetic improvement of maize plant height.

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) bioautography is an evolving technology that integrates the separation and analysis technology of TLC with biological activity detection technology, which has shown a steep rise in popularity over the past few decades. It connects TLC with convenient, economic and intuitive features and bioautography with high levels of sensitivity and specificity. In this study, we discuss the research progress of TLC bioautography and then establish a definite timeline to introduce it. This review summarizes known TLC bioautography types and practical applications for determining antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor and antioxidant compounds and for inhibiting glucosidase, pancreatic lipase, tyrosinase and cholinesterase activity constitutes. Nowadays, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to identify original, natural products with anti-COVID potential compounds from Chinese traditional medicine and natural medicinal plants. We also give an account of detection techniques, including in situ and ex situ techniques; even in situ ion sources represent a major reform. Considering the current technical innovations, we propose that the technology will make more progress in TLC plates with higher separation and detection technology with a more portable and extensive scope of application. We believe this technology will be diffusely applied in medicine, biology, agriculture, animal husbandry, garden forestry, environmental management and other fields in the future.

A self-supported CuO/Cu nanowire electrode (CuO/CuNWE), which was prepared by annealing Cu nanowires to form a porous Cu nanowire electrode (CuNWE) and then anodizing the as-prepared CuNWE in alkaline medium to generate Cu(OH)2 nanowires followed by calcination, was employed for chemical oxygen demand (COD) determination using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The structure and electrochemical behavior of the CuO/CuNWE were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and CV. The results indicated that the as-synthesized CuO/CuNWE, in which CuO nanowires with a length of several micrometers and a diameter of 100 to 300 nm could be found, was stable in alkaline medium and more electrocatalytically active for oxidizing a wide range of organic compounds in comparison with the CuNWE. Under optimized alkaline concentration and scan rate, the CuO/CuNWE exhibited a good performance for COD measurement, with a linear range of 5 to 1153 mg L−1, a sensitivity of 2.46× 10−2 mA /(mg L−1), and a detection limit of about 2.3 mg L−1. In addition, an excellent correlation was observed in COD values obtained by our method and the classic dichromate method (r = 0.9995, p < 0.01, n = 11). Finally, our method was successfully used to measure the COD values in real water samples, showing great potential for practical application in water pollution control.

In spite of commercial use of heterosis in agriculture, the molecular basis of heterosis is poorly understood. It was observed that maize hybrid Zong3/87-1 exhibited an earlier onset or heterosis in radicle emergence. To get insights into the underlying mechanism of heterosis in radicle emergence, differential proteomic analysis between hybrid and its parental lines was performed. In total, the number of differentially expressed protein spots between hybrid and its parental lines in dry and 24 h imbibed seed embryos were 134 and 191, respectively, among which 47.01% (63/134) and 34.55% (66/191) protein spots displayed nonadditively expressed pattern. Remarkably, 54.55% of nonadditively accumulated proteins in 24 h imbibed seed embryos displayed above or equal to the level of the higher parent patterns. Moreover, 155 differentially expressed protein spots were identified, which were grouped into eight functional classes, including transcription & translation, energy & metabolism, signal transduction, disease & defense, storage protein, transposable element, cell growth & division and unclassified proteins. In addition, one of the upregulated proteins in F1 hybrids was ZmACT2, a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana ACT7 (AtACT7). Expressing ZmACT2 driven by the AtACT7 promoter partially complemented the low germination phenotype in the Atact7 mutant. These results indicated that hybridization between two parental lines can cause changes in the expression of a variety of proteins, and it is concluded that the altered pattern of gene expression at translational level in the hybrid may be responsible for the observed heterosis.

Aim • To compare the operation-related indexes, complication rates, and cardiac function indexes of bioresorbable scaffolds with drug-eluting scaffolds in coronary non-left main stem lesions and to clarify the clinical value of bioresorbable scaffolds in percutaneous coronary intervention for non-left main stem lesions. Methods • The retrospective study sample consisted of 60 non-left main stem lesions treated using bioresorbable stent or drug-eluting stents between June 2022 and June 2023. Comparison of surgical operation-related indexes, intraoperative and postoperative complications, cardiac function indexes, adverse cardiovascular events, and surgical success rate between the two groups. Results • The surgical operation time and X-ray exposure time of the experimental group were shorter than those of the control group, and contrast agent dosage was lower than that of the control group (P < .05). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was higher than that in the control group at one month after surgery, and left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD) and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < .05). The total incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events was lower in the experimental group than in the control group (15.6% VS. 71.4%)(P < .05). Conclusion • Bioresorbable scaffolds are more effective than drug-eluting scaffolds in treating non-left main stem lesions by percutaneous coronary intervention. Cuticular wax is a major component of the surface cuticle of plants, which performs crucial functions in optimizing plant growth. Histone acetylation regulates gene expression in diverse biological processes, but its role in cuticular wax synthesis is not well understood. In this study, we observed that mutations of the Arabidopsis thaliana histone acetyltransferase GENERAL CONTROL NON-REPRESSED PROTEIN5 (GCN5) impaired the accumulation of stem cuticular wax. Three target genes of GCN5, ECERIFERUM3 (CER3), CER26, and CER1-LIKE1 (CER1-L1), were identi- fied by RNA-seq and ChIP assays. H3K9/14 acetylation levels at the promoter regions of CER3, CER26, and CER1-L1 were consistently and significantly decreased in the gcn5-2 mutant as compared to the wild-type. Notably, overexpression of CER3 in the gcn5-2 mutant rescued the defect in stem cuticular wax biosynthesis. Collectively, these data demonstrate that GCN5 is involved in stem cuticular wax accumulation by modulating CER3 expression via H3K9/14 acetylation, which underlines the important role of histone acetylation in cuticular wax biosynthesis. Heterosis plays a decisive role in maize production worldwide, but its genetic basis remains unclear. In this study, we explored heterosis for ear-weight (EW)-related traits using a North Carolina Experiment III design (Design III) population derived from the elite maize hybrid Zhengdan 958. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was conducted based on phenotypic data collected from five environments using a high-density linkage map that consisted of 905 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). A total of 38 environmentally stable QTLs were detected, and the numbers for the Z1 and Z2 populations were 18 and 20, respectively. All environmentally stable QTLs for Z2 were characterized by the overdominance effect (OD), which indicated that overdominance was one of the most important contributors to the heterosis of EW-related traits. Consistent with the significant positive correlations between EW-related traits, 9 genomic regions with overlapped QTLs for different traits were found and were located on chromosomes 1 (1), 3 (2), 4 (3), 7 (1), 8 (1), and 9 (1). Compared to previous reports, we found that the genomic regions for heterosis were not always congruent between different hybrids, which suggested that the combination of heterotic loci in different hybrids was genotype-dependent. Heterosis has been widely used in agriculture, but the underlying molecular principles are still largely unknown. During seed germination, we observed that maize (Zea mays) hybrid B73/Mo17 was less sensitive than its parental inbred lines to exogenous abscisic acid (ABA), and endogenous ABA content in hybrid embryos decreased more rapidly than in the parental inbred lines. ZmABA8ox1b, an ABA inactivation gene, was consistently more highly upregulated in hybrid B73/Mo17 than in its parental inbred lines at early stages of seed germination. Moreover, ectopic expression of ZmABA8ox1b obviously promoted seed germination in Arabidopsis. Remarkably, microscopic observation revealed that cell expansion played a major role in the ABA-mediated maize seed germination heterosis, which could be attributed to the altered expression of cell wall-related genes. The Bilong Co oil shale is located in the southern part of the Qiangtang basin. This oil shale zone, together with the Shengli River-Changshe Mountain oil shale zone in the northern part of the Qiangtang basin, represents a large marine oil shale resource in China. An organic geochemical investigation of the oil shale was performed to reconstruct paleoenvironment during deposition and to assess petroleum prospects. The TOC content (6.75-19.2 wt.%) and S2 values (5.96-70.2 mg HC/g rock) of oil shale samples from the Bilong Co area are relatively high indicating that the oil shale from the Bilong Co area has shale oil producing potential. The thermal maturity assessed from Tmax and other maturity-related parameters (Ts/(Ts+Tm), C32Hop S/(S+R), C29St S/(S+R), and C29St ββ/(αα+ββ)) shows a mature stage of the organic matter. Analyzed oil shale samples from the Bilong Co area are characterized by a dominance of low carbon number molecular compositions with relatively high C21-/C21+ (0.82-1.95), low Pr/Ph (0.13-0.80), high concentrations of homohopanes (C31-C35), and a slight predominance of C29 steranes, indicating reducing environments, highly saline conditions, a strong contribution of inferior aquatic organisms, and some influence of terrestrial organic matter. Highly similar biomarker characteristics between the Bilong Co oil shale and nearby Zharen-Longeni crude oil in the southern Qiangtang depression suggest that the oil shale from the Bilong Co area has made a strong contribution to the generation of Zharen-Longeni crude oil. Background: Auxin signaling is vital for plant growth and development, and plays important role in apical dominance, tropic response, lateral root formation, vascular differentiation, embryo patterning and shoot elongation. Auxin Response Factors (ARFs) are the transcription factors that regulate the expression of auxin responsive genes. The ARF genes are represented by a large multigene family in plants. The first draft of full maize genome assembly has recently been released, however, to our knowledge, the ARF gene family from maize (ZmARF genes) has not been characterized in detail. Results: In this study, 31 maize (Zea mays L.) genes that encode ARF proteins were identified in maize genome. It was shown that maize ARF genes fall into related sister pairs and chromosomal mapping revealed that duplication of ZmARFs was associated with the chromosomal block duplications. As expected, duplication of some ZmARFs showed a conserved intron/exon structure, whereas some others were more divergent, suggesting the possibility of functional diversification for these genes. Out of these 31 ZmARF genes, 14 possess auxin-responsive element in their promoter region, among which 7 appear to show small or negligible response to exogenous auxin. The 18 ZmARF genes were predicted to be the potential targets of small RNAs. Transgenic analysis revealed that increased miR167 level could cause degradation of transcripts of six potential targets (ZmARF3, 9, 16, 18, 22 and 30). The expressions of maize ARF genes are responsive to exogenous auxin treatment. Dynamic expression patterns of ZmARF genes were observed in different stages of embryo development. Conclusions: Maize ARF gene family is expanded (31 genes) as compared to Arabidopsis (23 genes) and rice (25 genes). The expression of these genes in maize is regulated by auxin and small RNAs.
