Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR) is a crucial energy conversion technology that transforms CO2 into value-added chemicals, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing energy transitions. Designing high-performance catalysts is pivotal for widespread adoption of CO2 reduction reactions, aiming for high activity, selectivity, and stability. Amorphous oxides represent a burgeoning frontier in this field, attracting attention due to their abundant active sites that refine the catalyst structure-performance relationship. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent advances in using amorphous oxides for ECR. We begin by introducing the basic theory of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, followed by discussing current synthesis approaches for amorphous oxides in CO2 reduction, focusing on optimization strategies for these catalysts. Finally, we address challenges and future perspectives of amorphous oxides in ECR, aiming to foster the development of more efficient catalyst designs.

Esophageal cancer is a major global health challenge with a poor prognosis. Recent studies underscore the extracellular matrix (ECM) role in cancer progression, but the full impact of ECM-related genes on patient outcomes remains unclear. Our study utilized next-generation sequencing and clinical data from esophageal cancer patients provided by The Cancer Genome Atlas, employing the R package in RStudio for computational analysis. This analysis identified significant associations between patient survival and various ECM-related genes, including IBSP, LINGO4, COL26A1, MMP12, KLK4, RTBDN, TENM1, GDF15, and RUNX1. Consequently, we developed a prognostic model to predict patient outcomes, which demonstrated clear survival differences between high-risk and low-risk patient groups. Our comprehensive review encompassed clinical correlations, biological pathways, and variations in immune response among these risk categories. We also constructed a nomogram integrating clinical information with risk assessment. Focusing on the TENM1 gene, we found it significantly impacts immune response, showing a positive correlation with T helper cells, NK cells, and CD8+ T cells, but a negative correlation with neutrophils and Th17 cells. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis revealed enhanced pathways related to pancreatic beta cells, spermatogenesis, apical junctions, and muscle formation in patients with high TENM1 expression. This research provides new insights into the role of ECM genes in esophageal cancer and informs future research directions.

Abstract Enzymatic sensors have inherent problems such as the low stability and limited pH range in industrial and biomedical applications and therefore, more efficient nonenzymatic sensors are highly desirable. Herein, plasma‐functionalized defective MoSe2 is prepared and studied as a highly efficient catalyst for electrochemical sensing of H2O2. Experiments and theoretical computations show that the plasma‐induced Se multi‐vacancies and nitrogen dopants generate new active sites, expose more edge active surfaces, narrow the bandgap, and strengthen binding with the ·OH intermediate, which imparts new fundamental knowledge about the roles of defects in catalysis. The defective MoSe2‐catalyzed sensor delivers competitive performance in hydrogen peroxide detection such as a low detection limit of 12.6 nmol/L, wide operational pH range of 1−13, good long‐term stability, and high selectivity. The portable sensor produced by screen printing confirms the excellent commercial potential and in addition, the results not only reveal a novel concept to design and fabricate high‐performance sensors for H2O2 but also provide insights into the effectiveness of surface modification of diverse catalytic materials.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: This study aims to explore the high-risk factors of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infection of hospitalised patients in high-risk departments. Methods: This study is a multicentre, retrospective study. CRE screening positive patients from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018 of high-risk departments in five tertiary first-class teaching hospitals in Beijing collect the patients’ CRE test specimen information, CRE infection information and outcomes. The patients were divided into a colonisation group and an infection group for comparative analysis. A logistic regression model was established to explore the risk factors of CRE infection. Subgroup analysis was conducted according to invasive procedures and the type of the infection. Results: In total, 344 patients were included in this study, including 85 (24.71%) colonisation and 259 (75.29%) infection; 36.09% CRE colonisation converted to infection, and the mean conversion time from colonisation to infection was 6.5 (4.0, 18.8) days. Renal disease, granulocytosis, invasive procedures and the time from hospital stay to positive CRE were the risk factors for CRE infection. The subgroup analysis showed that the rate of CRE infection in the invasive group was higher than in the non-invasive group (P < 0.001), and the rate of exacerbation or death in the invasive group was also higher than in the non-invasive group (P = 0.019). The average length of ICU and hospitalisation in the healthcare-associated infection group were significantly higher than those in the community infection group, but there was no difference in the proportion of final exacerbation or death between them (P = 0.727). Conclusion: Kidney disease, granulocytosis, invasive procedures and CRE detection time are the risk factors for CRE infection. Carrying out CRE screening in patients as early as possible and taking effective intervention measures in time to avoid adverse consequences is all important.

BackgroundImbalance of oral salivary microbiota has been linked to the pathogenesis of a variety of systemic diseases, and oral bacterial species have been shown to be useful biomarkers for systemic diseases.This study aimed to characterize the alterations of oral microbiota in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and to evaluate the diagnostic performance of oral microbial biomarkers for ESCC.MethodsThe relative abundance of flora in saliva samples was analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing, and differences in the species present in samples from ESCC patients and healthy controls (HCs) were identified by analyzing species diversity and performing LEfSe analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was applied to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the characteristic bacteria individually and in combination.ResultsDifferences in bacterial diversity indexes were observed for the saliva of ESCC patients versus HCs (P0.05). Abstract Carbon dioxide generated by the combustion of fossil fuels exacerbates global environmental problems and hydrogen produced by renewable energy is a viable alternative in the continuous transition to sustainable and eco‐conscience development. Electrocatalysts are vital to electrocatalytic reactions and plasma surface modification is one of the promising techniques to modify nanoscale electrocatalysts for water splitting. Up to now, a comprehensive review on the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities of plasma‐tailored defective electrocatalysts for water electrolysis and hydrogen fuel cells is lacking. This paper systematically summarizes the current status of hydrogen production and fuel cell technologies, plasma principles and advantages, plasma‐tailored defective electrocatalysts from the perspective of water splitting and fuel cell applications, advanced characterization of defects, relationship between materials structure and catalytic activity of electrocatalysts, and finally challenges, opportunities, and future roadmap of plasma technologies. This review serves as a reference for future development of hydrogen technologies and offers insights into the structural tailoring of catalytic materials.

Ingestion of environmental microplastics (MPs) by animals is receiving a great health concern, because of its potential adverse effects on organisms. Most ingested MPs will be excreted, while the health threats depend largely on the excretory dynamics. Although the excretion characteristics of MPs in invertebrates and fishes have been studied, information on the excretion of MPs in mammals remains lacking, especially for the fibrous MPs. Here, fibrous and granular MP and nanoplastic (NP) of nylon polymer (polyamide 66, PA66) were exposed in rats by oral in the first day, then the excretion behavior of ingested PA66 in rats was quantified using mass quantification of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) together with the microscope observation. Although most of the ingested PA66-MP or PA66-NP was excreted within 48 h, the three forms of PA66 were not completely cleared by the rats even after seven days excretion. The excretion of PA66 in rats was well-described by a first-order kinetics model, and the calculated half-lives of elimination of PA66 polymer in rats are 19.9 h (fibrous PA66-MP), 23.7 h (granular PA66-MP), and 36.9 h (PA66-NP), indicating rats excrete smaller MPs more slowly than the bigger ones. This was further confirmed by the particle size distribution of granular PA66-MP observed in feces. Besides, approximately 30% of the ingested PA66-NP were failed to be detected in feces, while the occurrence of PA66-NP in rat serum induced by PA66-NP ingestion was found. This indicates that PA66-NP can pass through the gut barrier and entered the blood circulation. Therefore, the health risks of ingested MPs, especially for the NPs, deserve further attention.

Abstract Flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted increasing interest since their advent in 2012. In comparison with other flexible electrodes, hydrogels possess transparency, stretchability, biocompatibility, and tunable ionic conductivity, which together provide great potential as current collectors in TENGs for wearable applications. The development of hydrogel‐based TENGs (H‐TENGs) is currently a burgeoning field but research efforts have lagged behind those of other common flexible TENGs. In order to spur research and development of this important area, a comprehensive review that summarizes recent advances and challenges of H‐TENGs will be very useful to researchers and engineers in this emerging field. Herein, the advantages and types of hydrogels as soft ionic conductors in TENGs are presented, followed by detailed descriptions of the advanced functions, enhanced output performance, as well as flexible and wearable applications of H‐TENGs. Finally, the challenges and prospects of H‐TENGs are discussed.

Nanoplastics in aquatic environments may induce adverse immunotoxicity effects in fish. However, there is insufficient evidence on the visible immunotoxicity endpoints in the larval stages of fish. The liver plays an important role in systemic and local innate immunity in the fish. In this study, the hepatic inflammatory effects of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastic particles (NPs: 100 and 50 nm) and micron PS particles on transgenic zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae were estimated using fluorescent-labeled neutrophils, macrophages, and liver-type inflammatory binding protein (fabp10a). Particles with smaller size induced higher aggregations of neutrophils and apoptosis of macrophages in the abdomen of the larvae, corresponding to greater hepatic inflammation in the larvae. NPs increased the expression of fabp10a in the larval livers in a dose- and size-dependent manner. In response to severe environmental and energy crises, the world is increasingly focusing on electric vehicles (EVs) and related emerging technologies. Emerging technologies for EVs have great potential to accelerate the development of smart and sustainable transportation and help build future smart cities. This paper reviews new trends and emerging EV technologies, including wireless charging, smart power distribution, vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems, connected vehicles, and autonomous driving. The opportunities, challenges, and prospects for emerging EV technologies are systematically discussed. The successful commercialization development cases of emerging EV technologies worldwide are provided. This review serves as a reference and guide for future technological development and commercialization of EVs and offers perspectives and recommendations on future smart transportation.

Road vehicles are responsible for air pollution in Hong Kong, and electric vehicles (EVs) are a promising alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles as the city is transitioning to clean energy. In this work, EV adoption in Hong Kong is investigated and analyzed, including the global EV markets, present EV status in Hong Kong, local challenges facing EV development, suggestions for EV promotion in Hong Kong, emerging technologies, and decommissioning of batteries and EVs. The challenges of EVs include insufficient charging infrastructures, inadequate management of public charging facilities, difficulties in EV repair and maintenance, “dead mileage” during charging, unacceptable long charging times, and limited commercial EV models. Strategies such as providing incentives and bonuses for commercial EVs, offering high-power quick-charging facilities, actively developing commercial EVs, installing more charging infrastructures for private EVs, building connections among stakeholders, encouraging the participation of the private sector to promote fee-based services, and supporting the development of innovative technologies should be implemented to promote EVs in Hong Kong. Emerging technologies for EVs such as wireless charging, smart power distribution, vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home systems, connected vehicles, and self-driving are discussed. Eco-friendly decommissioning of EV batteries can be realized by recycling and second-life applications. This paper serves as a reference and guide for the sustainable and smart evolution of the transportation sector in Hong Kong and other global large cities.

Sorption of phenanthrene onto the natural sediment with low organic carbon content (OC%), organic-free sediment, and kaolinite was investigated through isotherm experiments. Effects of cosolutes (pyrene, 4-n-nonyphenol (NP), and humic acid (HA)) on phenanthrene sorption were also studied by comparing apparent solid-water distribution coefficients (Kdapp) of phenanthrene. Two addition sequences, including “cosolute added prior to phenanthrene” and “cosolute and phenanthrene added simultaneously,” were adopted. The Freundlich model fits phenanthrene sorption on all 3 sorbents well. The sorption coefficients on these sorbents were similar, suggesting that mineral surface plays an important role in the sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants on low OC% sediments. Cosolutes could affect phenanthrene sorption on the sorbents, which depended on their properties, concentrations, and addition sequences. Pyrene inhibited phenanthrene sorption. Sorbed NP inhibited phenanthrene sorption at low levels and promoted sorption at high levels. Similar to NP, effect of HA on phenanthrene sorption onto the natural sediment depended on its concentrations, whereas, for the organic-free sediment and kaolinite, preloading of HA at high levels led to an enhancement in phenanthrene Kdapp while no obvious effect was observed at low HA levels; dissolved HA could inhibit phenanthrene sorption on the two sorbents.

Background: The importance of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) in Chinese hospitals is not clearly delineated. Thus we sought to assess the prevalence of MDRO in Chinese intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: Prospective study of inpatients admitted consecutively to eight ICUs in four Chinese cities in 2009-10. Admission and weekly screenings were performed by using selective media for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. For the two latters, resistance to ceftazidime defined MDRO. Backward logistic regression models were designed to assess factors independently associated with MDRO carriage on admission and MDRO acquisition within ICUs. Results: 686 patients were included, and the MDRO prevalence rate on admission was 30.5 % (32.7 % for ESBL-positive Enterobacteriaceae, 3.2 % for MRSA). Antibiotic treatment prior to ICU admission was independently associated with carriage on admission (OR: 1.4) in multivariate analysis. A total of 104 patients acquired =1 MDRO in ICU (overall attack rate: 23.7 %; 14.9 % for ESBL-positive Enterobacteriaceae, and 5.1 % for MRSA). The MDRO attack rate increased from 13.2 % in the first week to 82.1 % for ICU stay > 3 weeks. Duration of antibiotic exposure (OR: 1.16; 1.1-1.2) and prior antibiotic treatment before ICU (OR: 2.1; 1.1-3.3) were associated with MDRO acquisition in multivariate analysis. The MDRO prevalence rate on ICU discharge was 51.2 % and the global prevalence density rate 71 per 1000 hospital-days. Conclusion: More than one out of two patients was MDRO carrier on ICU discharge in Chinese hospitals. This is the result of the combination of a high MDRO prevalence rate on ICU admission and a high MDRO acquisition rate within ICU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydroxybenzoic acid esters (parabens) are used as preservatives in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, which results in the exposure of humans to these compounds. Parabens and its metabolite, p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HB) are excreted from urine in free and conjugated forms. In this study, free and total forms (free plus conjugated) of parabens and their common metabolite, p-HB, were measured in urine samples collected from U.S. children (n = 40), Chinese children (n = 70), and Chinese adults (n = 26). The median concentrations of the sum of 6 parabens (Σparabens) in urine from U.S. and Chinese children were 54.6 and 10.1 ng/mL, respectively. The median concentration of urinary parabens measured for Chinese adults was 33.2 ng/mL, which was lower than that reported for U.S. adults. Elevated concentrations of parabens (1000-10 000 ng/mL) were found in urine from some Chinese adult females. Parabens were present predominantly (>90%) as conjugated species in urine. Among the six parabens analyzed, methyl paraben (MeP) and propyl paraben (PrP) were the predominant compounds, which accounted for 57-98% and 1.4-12%, respectively, of the total concentrations. A significant positive correlation was found between the concentrations of MeP and PrP. The geometric mean (GM) concentration of p-HB was 1380 and 2370 ng/mL for Chinese children and adults, respectively. The GM concentrations of p-HB in urine from U.S. children were 752 ng/mL for girls and 628 ng/mL for boys, which were 2-3 times lower than the concentrations determined for Chinese children. There was a significant difference in the ratios of concentrations of Sparabens and p-HB between demographic groups, which suggested the existence of various exposure routes to parabens. Based on the concentrations of urinary parabens and p-HB, the daily intake (DI) of MeP and PrP was estimated. The GM DIMeP estimated for Chinese children was 0.5-0.7 mg/day, which was similar to those determined for U.S. children. The GM DIPrP (0.2-0.5 mg/day) estimated for Chinese children was 20- to 50-fold higher than the value determined for U.S. children (0.01 mg/day). The highest exposure to parabens was found for Chinese adult females, with GM DIMeP and DIPrP of 5.9 and 1.2 mg/day, respectively. Despite reports of the occurrence of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) and its derivatives in canned foods and consumer products, biomonitoring studies of human exposure to these compounds are lacking. In this study, 127 urine samples collected from the U.S. and China were analyzed for free and total (free plus conjugated) concentrations of BADGE and its three derivatives, bisphenol A (2,3-dihydroxypropyl) glycidyl ether [BADGE·H2O], bisphenol A (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) (2,3-dihydroxypropyl) ether [BADGE·HCl·H2O], and bisphenol A bis (2,3-dihydroxypropyl) ether [BADGE·2H2O], using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). BADGE and its three derivatives (collectively referred to as BADGEs) were found in 100% of the urine samples analyzed. Total urinary concentrations of BADGEs in the U.S. ranged from 1.24 to 9.03 ng/mL, with a GM concentration of 3 ng/mL. Concentrations of BADGEs in urine from adults (GM: 1.36 ng/mL) and children (1.02 ng/mL) in China were 3-fold lower than the concentrations found in the U.S. Both free and conjugated forms of BADGEs were present in urine, and the proportion of free form was inversely related to the total concentration of BADGEs. Among the four BADGEs measured in urine, BADGE·2H2O was the predominant compound, accounting for 45–60% of the total BADGEs concentration, followed by BADGE (17–24%). The distribution of the four BADGEs varied, depending on age, gender, and ethnicity of the adults and children. Daily intake (DI) and effective daily intake (DIE) of BADGEs were estimated based on urinary concentrations, and their respective values were 69.4 and 9.16 ng/kg-bw/day for the U.S. population and 28.4 and 5.69 ng/kg-bw/day for the Chinese population. [Objective] This study aimed to clone and express formyltransferase (Wbkc) gene from Brucella abortus in E. coli, purify the expressed protein and analyze its immunogenicity. [Method] A gene encoding 27-35 ku formyltransferase (Wbkc) was amplified from the genomic DNA of Brucella abortus by PCR. The amplified fragments were digested with BamH I and Sal I, and inserted into pET28a vector. The constructed recombinant plasmid pET 28 a-Wbkc was transformed into E. coli BL21 and was induced to express the fusion protein. Subsequently, the protein was purified by histidine-binding resin column chromatography, and the immunogenicity was detected by Western blot assay. The recombinant plasmid was identified by colony PCR, double digestion and sequencing analysis. [Result] Wbkc was successfully cloned and expressed in E. coli. A specific protein band of 29 ku was detected by SDS-PAGE. Western blot showed specific im-munoreactivity of the purified fusion protein. [Conclusion] This study provided a solid foundation for further investigating diagnostic proteins for brucellosis and developing Brucella gene-deletion vaccines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new sorbent material, calcium fluoride-acid red 138 (AR138), was synthesized and characterized by various methods. The hybrid adsorbent for adsorption of PCBs corresponded to the octanol-water partition law, and their partition coefficients were calculated to be 5,836.8mgkg-1 for PCB029, 8,311.9 mgkg-1 for PCB101, and 20,815mgkg-1 for PCB180, respectively. When the hybrid adsorbent was used in the treatment of a polluted ground water sample, the removal of PCB concentrations was satisfactory. All the reactants used in the synthesis of the adsorbent material are easily available and are harmless to the environment. Also, the AR138 reactant may reuse a concentrated AR138-producing wastewa-ter instead. Therefore, this work has developed a simple, eco-friendly, and "waste treat waste" method for the large-scale production of a cost-effective sorbent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
