Male infertility (MI) and male sexual dysfunction (MSD) can often coexist together due to various interplay factors such as psychosexual, sociocultural and relationship dynamics. The presence of each form of MSD can adversely impact male reproduction and treatment strategies will need to be individualized based on patients’ factors, local expertise, and geographical socioeconomic status. The Asia Pacific Society of Sexual Medicine (APSSM) and the Asian Society of Men’s Health and Aging (ASMHA) aim to provide a consensus statement and practical set of clinical recommendations based on current evidence to guide clinicians in the management of MI and MSD within the Asia-Pacific (AP) region. A comprehensive, narrative review of the literature was performed to identify the various forms of MSD and their association with MI. MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for the following English language articles under the following terms: “low libido”, “erectile dysfunction”, “ejaculatory dysfunction”, “premature ejaculation”, “retrograde ejaculation”, “delayed ejaculation”, “anejaculation”, and “orgasmic dysfunction” between January 2001 to June 2022 with emphasis on published guidelines endorsed by various organizations. This APSSM consensus committee panel evaluated and provided evidence-based recommendations on MI and clinically relevant MSD areas using a modified Delphi method by the panel and specific emphasis on locoregional socioeconomic- cultural issues relevant to the AP region. While variations exist in treatment strategies for managing MI and MSD due to geographical expertise, locoregional resources, and sociocultural factors, the panel agreed that comprehensive fertility evaluation with a multidisciplinary management approach to each MSD domain is recommended. It is important to address individual MI issues with an emphasis on improving spermatogenesis and facilitating reproductive avenues while at the same time, managing various MSD conditions with evidence-based treatments. All therapeutic options should be discussed and implemented based on the patient’s individual needs, beliefs and preferences while incorporating locoregional expertise and available resources.

ABSTRACT: Marek's disease (MD), an immunosuppression disease induced by Marek's disease virus (MDV), is one of the significant diseases affecting the health and productive performance of poultry. The roles of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in MD development were poorly understood. In this study, we found a circRNA derived from exon 6 of RUNX family transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) gene, named circRUNX2.2, was highly expressed in chicken tumorous spleens (TS) induced by MDV. Through fluorescence in situ hybridization and nuclear-cytoplasmic separation assay, we determined circRUNX2.2 was mainly located in the nucleus. Knockout experiments confirmed that the flanking complementary sequences (RCMs) mediated its circularization. Gain of function assay and dual luciferase reporter gene assay revealed that circRUNX2.2 could promote the expression of RUNX2 via binding with its promoter region. RNA antisense purification assay and mass spectrometry assay showed circRUNX2.2 could recruit proteins such as CHD9 protein. Knocking down CHD9 expression decreased the expression of RUNX2 gene, which confirmed the positive regulation that circRUNX2.2 on RUNX2 expression was probably facilitated via recruiting CHD9 protein. Functional experiments showed that circRUNX2.2 promoted the proliferation of the MD lymphoma-derived chicken cell line, MDCC-MSB1, which confirmed the potential oncogenic role of circRNX2.2 in tumor development. In conclusion, we found that the RUNX2-derived circRUNX2.2 can positively regulate the transcription of the parental gene RUNX2 in a cis-acting manner. The high expression of circRUNX2.2 in MD tumor tissues indicated that it might mediate MD lymphoma progression.

Abstract Rechargeable neutral aqueous zinc−air batteries (ZABs) are a promising type of energy storage device with longer operating life and less corrosiveness compared with conventional alkaline ZABs. However, the neutral ZABs normally possess poor oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and oxygen reduction reactions performance, resulting in a large charge–discharge voltage gap and low round‐trip efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate a sunlight‐assisted strategy for achieving an ultralow voltage gap of 0.05 V in neutral ZABs by using the FeOOH‐decorated BiVO4 (Fe‐BiVO4) as an oxygen catalyst. Under sunlight, the electrons move from the valence band (VB) of Fe‐BiVO4 to the conduction band producing holes in VB to promote the OER process and hence reduce the overpotential. Meanwhile, the photopotential generated by the Fe‐BiVO4 compensates a part of the charging potential of neutral ZABs. Accordingly, the energy loss of the battery could be compensated via solar energy, leading to a record‐low gap of 0.05 V between the charge and discharge voltage with a high round‐trip efficiency of 94%. This work offers a simple but efficient pathway for solar‐energy utilization in storage devices, further guiding the design of high energy efficiency of neutral aqueous ZABs.

Introduction: Penile fracture is an uncommon urological emergency resulting from tunica albuginea rupture during penile erection. It is a rare condition requiring urgent surgery. Despite immediate surgical repair, the patients' erectile functions may still be impacted by penile fracture. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of surgical repair in penile fractures and its impact on erectile function. Methods: Our cohort was composed of patients diagnosed with penile fractures and received surgical repair from September 2014 to August 2022 in Peking University First Hospital. Penile color Doppler ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis. Surgical exploration was conducted, and postoperative complications were evaluated during follow-up. Erectile function was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) score. Univariate analysis was conducted employing the chi-square test, t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test to identify factors that may impact postoperative erectile function. Furthermore, multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression and linear regression to determine the independent risk factors influencing postoperative erectile function. Results: A total of 58 patients were enrolled in our study. The majority of injuries (69.0 %, 40/58) resulted from vigorous sexual intercourse. Most of the patients (69.0 %, 40/58) presented within 24 h. Sixteen patients (27.6 %) presented with concomitant urethral injury. The median size of the tunical tear was 1.5 (IQR, 1.0–2.0) cm. Presentation delay correlated significantly with the difference in IIEF-5 score before and after surgery, with corresponding p values of 0.028. Urethral injury correlated significantly with postoperative erectile dysfunction (ED), postoperative IIEF-5 score, and the difference in IIEF-5 score before and after surgery, with corresponding p values of 0.002, 0.004, and 0.002, respectively. Conclusions: To conclude, surgical repair of penile fracture provides good functional results with few morbidities and urethral injury may adversely affect postoperative erectile function after penile fracture repair.

Purpose: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to study the impact of varicocele repair in the largest cohort of infertile males with clinical varicocele by including all available studies, with no language restrictions, comparing intra-person conventional semen parameters before and after the repair of varicoceles. Materials and Methods: The meta-analysis was performed according to PRISMA-P and MOOSE guidelines. A systematic search was performed in Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases. Eligible studies were selected according to the PICOS model (Population: infertile male patients with clinical varicocele; Intervention: varicocele repair; Comparison: intraperson before-after varicocele repair; Outcome: conventional semen parameters; Study type: randomized controlled trials [RCTs], observational and case-control studies). Results: Out of 1,632 screened abstracts, 351 articles (23 RCTs, 292 observational, and 36 case-control studies) were included in the quantitative analysis. Objective Our objective was to investigate the therapeutic mechanism of quercetin in the management of cervical HR-HPV through the integration of network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques.

Purpose: Varicocele is a common problem among infertile men. Varicocele repair (VR) is frequently performed to improve semen parameters and the chances of pregnancy. However, there is a lack of consensus about the diagnosis, indications for VR and its outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore global practice patterns on the management of varicocele in the context of male infertility. Materials and Methods: Sixty practicing urologists/andrologists from 23 countries contributed 382 multiple-choice-questions pertaining to varicocele management. These were condensed into an online questionnaire that was forwarded to clinicians involved in male infertility management through direct invitation. The results were analyzed for disagreement and agreement in practice patterns and, compared with the latest guidelines of international professional societies (American Urological Association [AUA], American Society for Reproductive Medicine [ASRM], and European Association of Urology [EAU]), and with evidence emerging from recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Additionally, an expert opinion on each topic was provided based on the consensus of 16 experts in the field. Results: The questionnaire was answered by 574 clinicians from 59 countries. The majority of respondents were urologists/ uro-andrologists. A wide diversity of opinion was seen in every aspect of varicocele diagnosis, indications for repair, choice of technique, management of sub-clinical varicocele and the role of VR in azoospermia. A significant proportion of the responses were at odds with the recommendations of AUA, ASRM, and EAU. A large number of clinical situations were identified where no guidelines are available. Conclusions: This study is the largest global survey performed to date on the clinical management of varicocele for male infertility. It demonstrates: 1) a wide disagreement in the approach to varicocele management, 2) large gaps in the clinical practice guidelines from professional societies, and 3) the need for further studies on several aspects of varicocele management in infertile men.

ABSTRACT: Marek's disease (MD) is a lymphoproliferative neoplastic disease caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV). Previous studies have showed that DNA methylation was involved in MD development, but systematic studies are still lacking. Herein, we performed whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and RNA-seq in MDV-infected tumorous spleens (IN), noninfected spleens (NoIN), and survivor (SUR) spleens of chickens to identify the genes playing important roles in MD tumor transformation. We generated the first genome-wide DNA methylation profile of MDV-infected, noninfected, and survivor chickens. Combined the WGBS and RNA-Seq, we found that the expression of 25% differential expression genes (DEGs) were significantly correlated with methylation of CpG sites in their gene bodies or promoters. Further, we focused on the DEGs with differentially methylated regions (DMRs) on genes’ body and promoter, and it showed the expression of 60% DEGs were significantly correlated with methylation of CpG sites in DMRs. Finally, we identified 8 genes, including CD4, CTLA4, DTL, HMGB1, LGMN, NUP210, RAD52, and ZAP70, and their expression was negatively correlated with methylation of DMRs in their promoters in both IN vs. NoIN and IN vs. SUR. These 8 genes showed specifically high expression in IN groups and clustered in module turquoise analyzed by WGCNA. Out of 8 genes, CD4 and HMGB1 were drop in QTLs associated with MD resistance. Thus, we overexpressed the 2 genes to simulate their high expression in the IN group and found they significantly promoted MDCC-MSB-1 cell proliferation, which revealed they might play promoting roles in MD tumorigenesis in IN due to their high expression induced by hypomethylation.

Traumatic peripheral nerve injury occurs frequently and is a major clinical and public health problem that can lead to functional impairment and permanent disability. Despite the availability of modern diagnostic procedures and advanced microsurgical techniques, active recovery after peripheral nerve repair is often unsatisfactory. Peripheral nerve regeneration involves several critical events, including the recreation of the microenvironment and remyelination. Results from previous studies suggest that the peripheral nervous system (PNS) has a greater capacity for repair than the central nervous system. Thus, it will be important to understand myelin and myelination specifically in the PNS. This review provides an update on myelin biology and myelination in the PNS and discusses the mechanisms that promote myelin clearance after injury. The roles of Schwann cells and macrophages are considered at length, together with the possibility of exogenous intervention.

Purpose: COVID pandemic significantly affected the delivery and maintenance of healthcare system, resulting in greater utilization of digital health interventions. Materials and Methods: This multi-national cross-sectional survey was administered to clinicians working in major Asia-Pacific cities during the mandatory social lockdown period in June 2020. Clinical demographics and professional data, delivery of Andrology-related healthcare services, and patient distress based on validated questionnaires such as Depression and Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and Decisional Engagement Scale (DES) were collected. Results: Telehealth medicine was instituted in all the centres with the majority of centres (92.9%) reported a 50% or more reduction in out-patient related services. The numbers of phone calls, emails correspondence and educational webinars have significantly increased. Despite the provision of reasons for changes in healthcare service and delay in surgery, more than half of the patients (57.1%) rated 2 on the DASS score for the item on patients over-react to situations, while a third of the patients (35.7%) scored a 2 for DASS item on patients being more demanding or unreasonable. The DES scores were more positive with most patients reported a score above 7 out of 10 in terms of items on accepting current arrangement (85.7%), confident in clinician decision-making about treatment (92.9%) and comfortable that the decision is consistent with their preferences (71.4%). Most patients (85.7%) indicated their preferences for more detailed information on healthcare provision. Conclusions: Our study showed telehealth services were integrated early and successfully during the COVID pandemic and patients were generally receptive with minimal psychosocial distress.

Icariside II, as a favonoid compound derived from epimedium, has been proved to involed in a variety of biological and pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-osteoporosis, anti-oxidation, anti-aging, and anti-cancer but its mechanism is unclear, especially in terms of its effect on post-transcriptional modification of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Phosphorylation of eNOS plays an important role in the synthesis of nitric oxide in endothelial cells, which is closely related to erectile dysfunction, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other diseases. Our study aims to investigate the effect and mechanism of Icariside II on the rapid phosphorylation of eNOS. In this study, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were stimulated with Icariside II in the presence or absence of multiple inhibitors (1 µM), including LY294002 (PI3K-inhibitor), MK-2206 (AKT-inhibitor), Bisindolylmaleimide X (AMPK-inhibitor), H-89 (CaMKII-inhibitor), KN-62 (PKA-inhibitor), Dorsomorphin (PKC-inhibitor). The proliferation of HUVECs was assessed using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8). The release of nitric oxide (NO) within HUVECs was detected via fluorescence probe (DAF-FM). Western blot was used to examine the effect of Icariside II on the expression of eNOS, phosphorylation of eNOS, and common signaling pathways proteins. Public health crises have become one of the greatest threats to sustainable global economic development. It is therefore important to explore the impact of public health events on green economic efficiency. However, few studies have specifically examined the relationship between public health security and green economic efficiency. Based on the relevant data of 30 Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2019, this paper explores the impact of public health on green economic efficiency by establishing a four-stage SBM-DEA model to construct green economic efficiency indicators and using a panel model. A moderating effect model is established to explore the moderating effect of environmental regulation on the impact of public health on green economic efficiency. In addition, this paper examines the heterogeneity of public health impact on green economic efficiency in terms of geographic location, carbon pilot, and transportation level. It is found that, first, public health events have a significant hindering effect on green economic efficiency. Second, environmental regulation has a significant moderating effect on the impact of public health events on green economic efficiency. Third, the impact of public health events on green economic efficiency changes from hindering to facilitating as the intensity of environmental regulation increases. Fourth, the impact of public health events on green economic efficiency is heterogeneous in terms of geographic location, carbon pilot, and transportation level. The above studies have implications for how to balance economic development and environmental protection in case of a public safety event.

This study focuses on exploring the relationship between industrial intelligence and capacity utilization based on the perspective of green development. Based on a fixed effect model, using data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) and China’s A-share listed enterprises from 2011 to 2019, this study empirically analyzes the influence of industrial intelligence on enterprises’ capacity utilization. The benchmark regression results reveal that industrial intelligence has a negative effect on enterprises’ capacity utilization. The results are robust to several econometric concerns. Moreover, mechanism analysis indicates that industrial intelligence affects enterprises’ capacity utilization through the productivity effect, the green innovation effect, and the scale expansion effect. When considering the heterogeneity at regional levels, we find that enterprises in the central and western regions are more affected by industrial intelligence. Our findings provide guidance to enterprises and policymakers in addressing industrial overcapacity and green development issues in China.

This study was to investigate the factors influencing efficacy of dapoxetine for the treatment of Premature ejaculation (PE) in the real-world setting. Methods Altogether 154 patients were followed up between Jan 2015 and Dec 2015. The clinical global impression of change (CGIC), premature ejaculation profile (PEP), the estimated intravaginal ejaculation latency time (eIELT) and estimated number of intravaginal thrusts before ejaculation (NITBE) were collected. The chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 16 is the most polymorphic region across the whole genome, and also an ideal model for genetic diversity investigation. The MHC B-F/B-L region is 92 kb in length with high GC content consisting of 18 genes and one pseudogene (Blec4), which plays important roles in immune response. To evaluate polymorphism of the Chinese indigenous chickens as well as to analyze the effect of selection to genetic diversity, we used WaferGen platform to identify sequence variants of the B-F/B-L region in 21 chicken populations, including the Red Jungle Fowl (RJF), Cornish (CS), White Leghorns (WLs), 16 Chinese domestic breeds, and two well-known inbred lines 63 and 72. A total of 3,319 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and 181 INDELs in the B-F/B-L region were identified among 21 populations, of which 2,057 SNPs (62%) and 159 INDELs (88%) were novel. Most of the variants were within the intron and the flanking regions. The average variation density was 36 SNPs and 2 INDELs per kb, indicating dramatical high diversity of this region. Furthermore, BF2 was identified as the hypervariable genes with 67 SNPs per kb. Chinese domestic populations showed higher diversity than the WLs and CS. The indigenous breeds, Nandan Yao (NY), Xishuangbanna Game (XG), Gushi (GS), and Xiayan (XY) chickens, were the top four with the highest density of SNPs and INDELs. The highly inbred lines 63 and 72 have the lowest diversity, which might be resulted from a long-term intense selection for decades. Collectively, we refined the genetic map of chicken MHC B-F/B-L region, and illustrated genetic diversity of 21 chicken populations. Abundant genetic variants were identified, which not only strikingly expanded the current Ensembl SNP database, but also provided comprehensive data for researchers to further investigate association between variants in MHC and immune traits.

Abstract Background Sulforaphane is a natural isothiocyanate available from cruciferous vegetables with multiple characteristics including antioxidant, antitumor and anti-inflammatory effect. Single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing has been used for long-read de novo assembly of plant genome. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism related to glucosinolates biosynthesis in Chinese kale using combined NGS and SMRT sequencing. Results SMRT sequencing produced 185,134 unigenes, higher than 129,325 in next-generation sequencing (NGS). NaCl (75 mM), methyl jasmonate (MeJA, 40 μM), selenate (Se, sodium selenite 100 μM), and brassinolide (BR, 1.5 μM) treatment induced 6893, 13,287, 13,659 and 11,041 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in Chinese kale seedlings comparing with control. These genes were associated with pathways of glucosinolates biosynthesis, including phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, cysteine and methionine metabolism, and glucosinolate biosynthesis. We found NaCl decreased sulforaphane and glucosinolates (indolic and aliphatic) contents and downregulated expression of cytochrome P45083b1 (CYP83b1), S-alkyl-thiohydroximatelyase or carbon–sulfur lyase (SUR1) and UDP-glycosyltransferase 74B1 (UGT74b1). MeJA increased sulforaphane and glucosinolates contents and upregulated the expression of CYP83b1, SUR1 and UGT74b1; Se increased sulforaphane; BR increased expression of CYP83b1, SUR1 and UGT74b1, and increased glucosinolates contents. The desulfoglucosinolate sulfotransferases ST5a_b_c were decreased by all treatments. Conclusions We confirmed that NaCl inhibited the biosynthesis of both indolic and aliphatic glucosinolates, while MeJA and BR increased them. MeJA and BR treatments, conferred the biosynthesis of glucosinolates, and Se and MeJA contributed to sulforaphane in Chinese kale via regulating the expression of CYP83b1, SUR1 and UGT74b1.

This paper addresses the tracking control problem of nonstrict-feedback systems with unknown control gains. The dynamic surface control method, Nussbaum gain function control technique, and radial basis function neural network are applied for the design of virtual control laws, and adaptive control laws. Then, an adaptive neural tracking control law is proposed in the last step. By using the dynamic surface control method, the “explosion of complexity” problem of conventional backstepping is avoided. Based on the application of the Nussbaum gain function control technique, the unknown control gain problem is well solved. With the help of the radial basis function neural network, the unknown nonlinear dynamics are approximated. Furthermore, through Lyapunov stability analysis, it is proved that the proposed control law can guarantee that all signals in the closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error can converge to an arbitrarily small domain of zero by adjusting the design parameters. Finally, two examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control law.

Introduction: There has been no report regarding the impact on male sexual life or sexual function by changes in lifestyle during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic. Aim: To investigate the changes in sexual life and sexual function of Chinese men during the COVID-19 epidemic. Methods: An online questionnaire was created and the survey was administered through social media to Chinese adult men. Main Outcome Measure: The main end point was the deteriorated erectile function or ejaculatory control ability, defined by self-evaluation or by decreased International Index of Erectile Function-5 items (IIEF-5) scores or increased premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT) scores. Results: Altogether, 612 questionnaires were collected. About 322 (52.6%) subjects were unmarried. About 8.4% and 8.5% subjects reported deteriorated erectile function or ejaculation control ability by self-evaluation, whereas 31.9% and 17.9% subjects showed decreased IIEF-5 scores or increased PEDT scores. Subjects with deteriorated erectile function by self-evaluation and decreased IIEF-5 scores had higher General Anxiety Disorder-7 (P < .001 and P = .001) and higher Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score (P < .001 and P = .002) after the epidemic, decreased frequency of sexual life (P < .001 and P < .001) and physical exercise (P = .009 and .007) after the epidemic. Subjects with deteriorated ejaculation control ability by self-evaluation and increased PEDT scores had higher General Anxiety Disorder-7 (P < .001 and P < .001) and higher Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score (P < .001 and P = .002) after the epidemic. Subjects with decreased frequency of sexual life had reduced income (P < .001), increased anxiety (P < .001) and depression (P < .001). Married subjects had higher proportion of improved depression (P = .048) and increased frequency of sexual life (P = .010). Conclusion: During the COVID-19 epidemic, decreased sexual function was present in a certain proportion of adult men, and the risk factors include increased anxiety and depression, and decreased frequency of sexual life.Fang D, Peng J, Liao S, et al. The effects of storage conditions and cooking methods on chlorophyll, glucosinolate (GSL), and sulforaphane content in broccoli florets were investigated in this study. For the storage experiment, fresh broccoli florets were stored for 2, 4, and 6 days at 10, 4, and 0 °C with or without 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment. For the cooking experiment, fresh broccoli florets were cooked for 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 min under three cooking methods, namely, steaming, microwaving, and boiling. Results showed that the contents of chlorophyll, aliphatic GSL, indole GSL, and sulforaphane in broccoli florets of two cultivars decreased with prolonged storage time. The retained contents of chlorophyll, GSLs, and sulforaphane under 0 °C storage condition were significantly higher than those under 10 °C storage condition after 6 days of storage. The sulforaphane content was increased by 1-MCP treatment but differed among varieties. The cooking experiment showed that aliphatic GSL content decreased with increased cooking time under three cooking methods, and indole GSL and sulforaphane contents had a fluctuating trend with increasing cooking time after steaming and microwaving. Sulforaphane content increased by 17.15–50.16% relative to that in fresh broccoli florets and was considerably affected by cooking time. The highest level of sulforaphane content was retained for 7 min during steaming or 5 min during microwaving. Therefore, the combination of 1-MCP treatment and 0 °C storage condition had the best performance in preserving chlorophyll, GSLs, and sulforaphane. Moreover, steaming for 7 min or microwaving for 5 min is a more effective method for preserving the quality and increasing the sulforaphane content of broccoli florets than boiling.

Nuclear factor-Y (NF-Y) consists of three evolutionary conserved subunits including NF-YA, NF-YB, and NF-YC; it is a critical transcriptional regulator of lipid and glucose metabolism and adipokine biosynthesis that are associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) occurrence, while the impacts of genetic variants in the NF-Y gene on the risk of T2DM remain to be investigated. In the present study, we screened five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with the SNaPshot method in 427 patients with T2DM and 408 healthy individuals. Subsequently, we analyzed the relationships between genotypes and haplotypes constructed from these SNPs with T2DM under diverse genetic models. Furthermore, we investigated the allele effects on the quantitative metabolic traits. Of the five tagSNPs, we found that three SNPs (rs2268188, rs6918969, and rs28869187) exhibited nominal significant differences in allelic or genotypic frequency between patients with T2DM and healthy individuals. The minor alleles G, C, and C at rs2268188, rs6918969, and rs28869187, respectively, conferred a higher T2DM risk under a dominant genetic model, and the carriers of these risk alleles (either homozygotes of the minor allele or heterozygotes) had statistically higher levels of fasting plasma glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Haplotype analysis showed that SNPs rs2268188, rs6918969, rs28869187, and rs35105472 formed a haplotype block, and haplotype TTAC was protective against T2DM (OR=0.76, 95% CI=0.33-0.82, P=0.004), while haplotype GCCG was associated with an elevated susceptibility to T2DM (OR=2.33, 95% CI=1.43-3.57, P=0.001). This study is the first ever observation to our knowledge that indicates the genetic variants of NF-YA might influence a Chinese Han individual’s occurrence of T2DM.

In this study, we first determined the complete mitochondrial genome of Sesarma dehaani. The mitogenome genome is a circular molecule of 15,917 bp, composed of 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and one non-coding region. The heavy strand was predicted to have 9 PCGs, 14 tRNA genes, and a D-loop region, while the light strand was predicted to include 4 PCGs, 2 rRNA genes, 8 tRNA genes. ATG and TAA are the dominant initiation codon and stop codon, respectively. The phylogenetic analysis shows that S. dehaani and Sesarma neglectum have close relationships.

Eriocheir leptognathus is a dominant species in the Yangtze River estuary. In this study, we first determined the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of E. leptognathus. The mitogenome is 16,143 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and one non-coding control region. Initiation codons ATG and ATT were identified in eight and four PCGs, respectively, while stop codons TAA or TAG were found in eleven genes except for two genes which use incomplete stop codon T–. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that three species (E. hepuensis, E.japonica, E. sinensis) and E. leptognathus are very closely related. The complete mitogenome of E. leptognathus can provide population genetics information to further explore the taxonomic status of this species.

BackgroundStructural remodeling of human atria plays a key role in sustaining atrial fibrillation (AF), but insufficient quantitative analysis of human atrial structure impedes the treatment of AF. We aimed to develop a novel 3‐dimensional (3D) structural and computational simulation analysis tool that could reveal the structural contributors to human reentrant AF drivers. Methods and ResultsHigh‐resolution panoramic epicardial optical mapping of the coronary‐perfused explanted intact human atria (63‐year‐old woman, chronic hypertension, heart weight 608 g) was conducted during sinus rhythm and sustained AF maintained by spatially stable reentrant AF drivers in the left and right atrium. The whole atria (107×61×85 mm3) were then imaged with contrast‐enhancement MRI (9.4 T, 180×180×360‐μm3 resolution). The entire 3D human atria were analyzed for wall thickness (0.4–11.7 mm), myofiber orientations, and transmural fibrosis (36.9% subendocardium; 14.2% midwall; 3.4% subepicardium). The 3D computational analysis revealed that a specific combination of wall thickness and fibrosis ranges were primarily present in the optically defined AF driver regions versus nondriver tissue. Finally, a 3D human heart–specific atrial computer model was developed by integrating 3D structural and functional mapping data to test AF induction, maintenance, and ablation strategies. This 3D model reproduced the optically defined reentrant AF drivers, which were uninducible when fibrosis and myofiber anisotropy were removed from the model. ConclusionsOur novel 3D computational high‐resolution framework may be used to quantitatively analyze structural substrates, such as wall thickness, myofiber orientation, and fibrosis, underlying localized AF drivers, and aid the development of new patient‐specific treatments.

In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Exopalaemon annandalei was amplified and analyzed. The mitogenome is 15,718 bp in length, encoding 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and a control region (CR). The nucleotide frequency of the mitogenome is as follows: A, 34.81%; C, 23.24%; G, 12.68%; and T, 29.25%. Seven kinds of the initiation codon and five kinds of termination codon are employed in the 13 PCGs. Phylogenetic analysis show E. annandalei to be in sister-relationship with E. carinicauda. The complete mitogenome sequence information of E. annandalei would play an important part in further studies on molecular systematics and phylogeny.

In this study, the complete mitogenome of Charybdis bimaculata was sequenced and annotated. The mitogenome is 15,441 bp in length, containing 37 classical eukaryotic mitochondrial regions (13 typical protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes) and a non-coding control region. Most of the genes are initiated with ATA, ATG, and ATT, though GTG is also used as an initiation codon. Twelve PCGs stop with complete termination codon TAA and TAG, while Cob uses incomplete codon (T–). The phylogenetic relationships based on 13 PCGs show that C. bimaculata clusters closest to C. fariata and C. natator.

The typical initiation codon (ATT) and stop codon (TAA) were observed in eight genes, respectively. The phylogenetic tree indicates that Helicana wuana is closely related to H. sheni.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly heterogeneous sleep disorder, and increasing evidence suggests that genetic factors play a role in the etiology of OSA. Airway muscle dysfunction might promote pharyngeal collapsibility, mutations or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the delta-sarcoglycan (SCGD) gene associated with muscle dysfunction. To evaluate if SCGD gene SNPs are associated with OSA, 101 individuals without OSA and 97 OSA patients were recruited randomly. The genotype distributions of SNPs (rs157350, rs7715464, rs32076, rs13170573 and rs1835919) in case and control populations were evaluated. The GG, GC and CC genotypes of rs13170573 in control and OSA groups were 51.5% and 37.1%, 36.6% and 35.1%, and 11.9% and 27.8%, respectively. Significantly fewer OSA patients possessed the GG genotype and significantly more possessed the CC genotype compared with controls. Further multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the CC genotype was an independent risk factor for OSA, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.17 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.19-6.01). Other factors, such as age ≥ 50 years, male gender, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m(2), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level ≥ 3.33 mg/dL, smoking and hypertension, were also independent risk factors for OSA in our multivariate logistic regression model.

BACKGROUND: Adiponectin is reported to be related to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Genetic variants in the gene encoding adiponectin (ADIPOQ) have been reported to be associated with adiponectin level in several genome-wide linkage and association studies. However, relatively little is known about the effects of ADIPOQ gene variants on COPD susceptibility. We determined the frequencies of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ADIPOQ in a Chinese Han population and their possible association with COPD susceptibility. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of 279 COPD patients and 367 age- and gender-distribution-matched control subjects. Seven tagging SNPs in ADIPOQ, including rs710445, rs16861205, rs822396, rs7627128, rs1501299, rs3821799 and rs1063537 were genotyped by SNaPshot. Association analysis of genotypes/alleles and haplotypes constructed from these loci with COPD was conducted under different genetic models. RESULTS: The alleles or genotypes of rs1501299 distributed significantly differently in COPD patients and controls (allele: P = 0.002, OR = 1.43 and 95%CI = 1.14-1.79; genotype: P = 0.008). The allele A at rs1501299 was potentially associated with an increased risk of COPD in all dominant model analysis (P = 0.009; OR: 1.54; 95%CI: 1.11-2.13), recessive model analyses (P = 0.015; OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.11-2.75) and additive model analyses (P = 0.003; OR: 2.11; 95% CI: 1.29-3.47). In haplotype analysis, we observed haplotypes AAAAACT and GGACCTC had protective effects, while haplotypes AGAACTC, AGGCCTC, GGAACTC, GGACACT and GGGCCTC were significantly associated with the increased risk of COPD. CONCLUSIONS: We conducted the first investigation of the association between the SNPs in ADIPOQ and COPD risk. Our current findings suggest that ADIPOQ may be a potential risk gene for COPD. Further studies in larger groups are warranted to confirm our results.

Iron is one of the most important minor elements in the shells of bivalves. This study was designed to investigate the involvement of ferritin, the principal protein for iron storage, in shell growth. A novel ferritin subunit (Fth1) cDNA from the freshwater pearl mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii) was isolated and characterized. The complete cDNA contained 822 bp, with an open reading frame (ORF) of 525 bp, a 153 bp 5' untranslated region (UTR) and a 144 bp 3' UTR. The complete genomic DNA was 4125 bp, containing four exons and three introns. The ORF encoded a protein of 174 amino acids without a signal sequence. The deduced ferritin contained a highly conserved motif for the ferroxidase center comprising seven residues of a typical vertebrate heavy-chain ferritin. It contained one conserved iron associated residue (Try27) and iron-binding region signature 1 residues. The mRNA contained a 27 bp iron-responsive element with a typical stem-loop structure in the 5'-UTR position. Copy number variants (CNVs) of Fth1 in two populations (PY and JH) were detected using quantitative real-time PCR. Associations between CNVs and growth were also analyzed. The results showed that the copy number of the ferritin gene of in the diploid genome ranged from two to 12 in PY, and from two to six in JH. The purpose of this study is to learn more about virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) practices at the United States' top one hundred university libraries, as well as how they are engaging with the metaverse. We conducted qualitative and descriptive analysis on the websites of the top one hundred university libraries in the United States to determine the application fields and application proportions of VR and AR technologies and found good practice examples of using VR and AR technologies in this field. The findings show that 86 percent of the top one hundred US university libraries have implemented VR and AR technologies, with practice areas focused on: VR/AR studio and VR/AR makerspace; immersive learning services and virtual exhibitions/conference services; visual geographic information system and VR navigation services; virtual reading services and visual retrieval services; and VR reference services. The study provides university library administrators and professionals with the most up-to-date information and best practices of VR and AR engagement areas and the proportion of use, which can aid in the development of strategies to leverage VR and AR technologies to improve patron service and embrace the metaverse for the communities they serve. Malicious attacks against data are unavoidable in the interconnected, open and shared Energy Internet (EI), Intrusion tolerant techniques are critical to the data security of EI. Existing intrusion tolerant techniques suffered from problems such as low adaptability, policy lag, and difficulty in determining the degree of tolerance. To address these issues, we propose a novel adaptive intrusion tolerance model based on game theory that enjoys two-fold ideas: 1) it constructs an improved replica of the intrusion tolerance model of the dynamic equation evolution game to induce incentive weights; and 2) it combines a tournament competition model with incentive weights to obtain optimal strategies for each stage of the game process. Extensive experiments are conducted in the IEEE 39-bus system, whose results demonstrate the feasibility of the incentive weights, confirm the proposed strategy strengthens the system's ability to tolerate aggression, and improves the dynamic adaptability and response efficiency of the aggression-tolerant system in the case of limited resources. Contactless services have become a common way for public libraries to provide services. As a result, the strategy used by public libraries in China will effectively stop the spread of epidemics caused by human touch and will serve as a model for other libraries throughout the world. The primary goal of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the contactless service measures provided by large Chinese public libraries for users in the pandemic era, as well as the challenges and countermeasures for providing such services. The data for this study was obtained using a combination of website investigation, content analysis, and telephone interviews for an analytical survey study of 128 large public libraries in China. The study finds that touch-free information dissemination, remote resources use, no-touch interaction self-services, network services, online reference, and smart services without personal interactions are among the contactless services available in Chinese public libraries. Exploring the current state of contactless services in large public libraries in China will help to fill a need for empirical attention to contactless services in libraries and the public sector.
