We show that electric fields in compactified spaces may produce Kaluza–Klein (KK) particles even when the energy of the electric fields is smaller than the KK scale. As an illustrative example, we consider a charged massless complex scalar coupled to U(1) gauge theory in |$\mathbb {R}^{1,3}\times {\mathbb {S}}^1$| and discuss the effect of background gauge potential along a compact direction. The electric field produces the charged KK particle nonperturbatively, which we call the KK Schwinger effect. We quantitatively show that KK modes can be produced even when the electric field energy is far below the KK scale. The mechanism is rather general and similar phenomena would occur in any compactification models when a gauge potential along a compact direction evolves in time and experiences a large enough field excursion. Timber and non-timber ecosystem services (ESs) of forests can have trade-offs. These trade-offs are often influenced by local characteristics, and a higher awareness of local ESs among the location population could support forest management to supply ESs sustainably. This study examines trade-offs among timber and non-timber ESs in three adjacent municipalities in Japan where social contexts differ and discusses them in relation to the environmental awareness of each community. First, we explored the local awareness of the population of ESs in interviews. Then we produced maps of landslide prevention, sediment retention, and forest recreation ESs in plantations at 30-m resolution and classified forests according to evaluations of each ES. We overlaid the ES maps with a map of logging locations from the previous 5 years to calculate the logged ratio for each ES class. In a region with a long history of forestry, where awareness of ESs seems to be high, forests providing a wider range of ESs had a lower logged ratio than forests with lower ESs. In contrast, in a region in which contracted foresters from outside of that region were coordinating logging activities, even forests providing numerous ES had a high logged ratio. Thus, increasing awareness of ESs amongst the local population may lead to a more balanced use of ESs. Our results indicate that local governments would be best placed to raise awareness by educating forest enterprises or providing science-based information on ESs to foresters. We conclude that analyses of local ES trade-offs under consideration of the social context as presented here, is the first step towards developing and maintaining sustainable forest management principles. ATP-uncoupling alternative oxidase (AOX) in the plant respiratory chain is often induced under stress conditions such as low temperature (LT). The importance of AOX in photosynthesis has been examined, and leaves having larger amounts of AOX tended to show larger decrease in photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR) by AOX inhibition. However, the details were not clarified. Here, we used three ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana which differed in AOX amounts and their responses to LT, and examined whether AOX amount was related to the degree of decrease in ETR by AOX inhibition. In Tiv-0, which originates from a warmer site, grown at high temperature (HT), AOX inhibition decreased ETR, but not in the other ecotypes. LT treatment significantly increased ETR and AOX, especially in Bur-0, but AOX inhibition did not decrease ETR in LT plants of any ecotype. AOX inhibition significantly increased the non-regulated energy dissipation in photosystem II (PSII), Y(NO), and decreased the maximal quantum yield of PSII, Fv/Fm, especially in LT plants. Since AOX inhibition did not affect the parameters of PSI, AOX inhibition may directly affect the reaction center of PSII in LT plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The development of temporal bone pneumatization is related to the postnatal middle ear environment, where the development of air cells is suppressed with otitis media in early childhood. However, whether air cell formation restarts when mastoidectomy is performed during temporal bone pneumatization remains unclear. Herein, we evaluated temporal bone pneumatization after canal wall up (CWU) tympanomastoidectomy for middle ear cholesteatoma in children. Methods: In total, 63 patients, including 29 patients with congenital cholesteatoma (CC) and 34 patients with acquired cholesteatoma (AC), were assessed using a set of pre- and postoperative computed tomography images. The air cells of the temporal bone were divided into five areas: periantral (anterior), periantral (posterior), periantral (medial), peritubal, and petrous apex. The number of areas with air cells before and after surgery was compared to evaluate temporal bone pneumatization after surgery. Results: A total of 63 patients, comprising 29 with CC and 34 with AC (pars flaccida; 23, pars tensa; 7, unclassified; 4), were evaluated. The median age of patients (18 males and 11 females) with CC was 5.0 (range, 2–15 years), while that of the AC group (23 males and 11 females) was 8 (range, 2–15 years). A significant difference in air cell presence was identified in the CC and AC groups after surgery (Mann–Whitney U, p < 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively). Between the two groups, considerably better postoperative pneumatization was observed in the CC group. A correlation between age at surgery and gain of postoperative air cell area development was identified in the CC group (Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient, r = −0.584, p < 0.001). In comparison with the postoperative pneumatization rate of each classified area, the petrous apex area was the lowest in the CC and AC groups. Conclusions: Newly developed air cells were identified in the temporal bones after CWU mastoidectomy for pediatric cholesteatoma. These findings may justify CWU tympanomastoidectomy, at least for younger children and CC patients, who may subsequently develop air cell systems after surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: The pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to left‐sided heart disease (Group 2 PH) is distinct from that of other groups of PH, yet there are still no approved therapies that selectively target pulmonary circulation. The increase in pulmonary capillary pressure due to left‐sided heart disease is a trigger event for physical and biological alterations of the pulmonary circulation, including the nitric oxide (NO)–soluble guanylate cyclase–cyclic guanosine monophosphate axis. This study investigated inhaled NO vasoreactivity tests for patients with Group 2 PH and hypothesized that these changes may have a prognostic impact. Methods and results: This was a single‐centre, retrospective study with a median follow‐up of 365 days. From January 2011 to December 2015, we studied 69 patients with Group 2 PH [age, 61.5 ± 13.0 (standard deviation) years; male:female, 49:20; left ventricular ejection fraction, 50.1 ± 20.4%; mean pulmonary arterial pressure, ≥25 mmHg; and pulmonary arterial wedge pressure (PAWP), >15 mmHg]. No adverse events were observed after NO inhalation. Thirty‐four patients with Group 2 PH showed increased PAWP (ΔPAWP: 3.26 ± 2.22 mmHg), while the remaining 35 patients did not (ΔPAWP: −2.11 ± 2.29 mmHg). Multivariate analysis revealed that increased PAWP was the only significant predictor of all‐cause death or hospitalization for heart failure (HF) after 1 year (hazard ratio 4.35; 95% confidence interval, 1.27–14.83; P = 0.019). The acute response of PAWP to NO differed between HF with preserved and reduced ejection fractions. Conclusions: Patients with Group 2 PH were tolerant of the inhaled NO test.
