BACKGROUND: Juvenile hormone (JH) signaling inhibitors may be used as insect growth regulators because of their ability to control metamorphosis and reproduction in insects by regulating the action of JH. RESULTS: We identified ethyl (E)‐3‐(4‐{[7‐ (4‐methoxycarbonylbenzyloxy)‐1,4‐benzodioxan‐6‐yl]methyl}phenyl)prop‐2‐enoate (EMBP) and observed its strong precocious metamorphosis‐inducing activity against silkworm larvae. To further elucidate its mechanism of action, we investigated the effect of EMBP on the JH‐mediated signaling pathway in vitro and in vivo. In a reporter assay using a Bombyx mori cell line, EMBP strongly suppressed the induction of reporter gene expression by Juvenile hormone I (JH I) in a concentration‐dependent manner. A parallel rightward shift was observed in the dose–response curve of JH I after treatment with EMBP, indicating that EMBP competitively inhibited JH. Moreover, we monitored developmental changes in the JH‐responsive gene, Krüppel homolog 1 (Kr‐h1), and ecdysone‐responsive gene, Broad‐Complex (BRC), in EMBP‐treated silkworm larvae. EMBP suppressed only the expression of Kr‐h1 in third‐instar larvae. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated that EMBP specifically regulates the JH‐mediated Kr‐h1 signaling pathway. Graduates with strong foreign language skills (FLS) have an advantage when applying for a job. Underpinned by the theory of planned behavior, this research aimed at examining influences on the intentions of tourism majors in a Korean university to acquire FLS. A first survey was conducted with 256 students who had completed two or more semesters in the program. A second survey was administered with 134 students who had newly entered the program. Overall, the attitudes and subjective norms were found to be significant contributors, while behavioral control appeared to be less influential in regard to the students' intentions to acquire FLS. Different interventions to influence the students' intentions to acquire FLS should be considered based on the students' enrollment periods. Effects can be larger on students within certain enrollment periods if interventions are targeted at normative beliefs, while effects may be larger on students who are new to the program if interventions highlight control beliefs.

Sleep problems are especially serious in Japan. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effects of a shift of residence to a mountain village on children's melatonin responses. The participants were 19 children (nine males and ten females, 10–15 years old) who participated in the Mountain Village Educational Program. After excluding a girl with confirmed deficits, the data of 18 participants were used for analysis. We measured salivary melatonin concentration and assessed the self-completed questionnaire survey on sleep situation. Although the proportion of people who showed a greater salivary melatonin concentration at night than in the morning immediately after starting the Mountain Village Educational Program was 50%, after that it was shown that melatonin concentration increased at night and decreased in the morning. The results demonstrated that all participants showed a salivary melatonin secretion pattern of night > morning after approximately 3.5 months. Based on these findings, the Mountain Village Educational Program, which involves a shift of residence to a mountain village, has the potential to improve children's sleep. Conclusion: Not all patients diagnosed with congenital infection using umbilical cord assay were found to be positive for CMV-DNA by perilymphatic fluid assay. In addition, a CMV-DNA-positive result was observed in one patient who had not been diagnosed with congenital infection. Sampling of perilymphatic fluid from a large population of patients with congenital SNHL caused by congenital CMV infection or of unknown etiology is required to determine the prevalence of CMV-related profound HL. Objectives: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is one of the most frequent manifestations in patients with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Using dried umbilical cord, a PCR-based assay was recently developed for the retrospective detection of congenital CMV infection. This study analyzed the presence of CMV in the perilymphatic fluid and evaluated differences in the effect of cochlear implantation between CMV-positive and -negative groups. Method: Perilymphatic fluid was collected from each patient at the time of cochlear implantation and analyzed for the presence of CMV using a PCR method. Results: The perilymphatic fluid in two of the five patients suffering from congenital CMV infection and in one of the 17 patients without congenital CMV infection was found to be positive for CMV. The existing literature suggests that serious engagement in leisure activities leads to happiness, life satisfaction, and successful aging among older adults. This qualitative study was used to examine the benefits of serious involvement in leisure activities among older Korean adults who were members of a sports club. Using an analytic data analysis, we identified three main themes associated with the benefits of serious engagement in leisure activities: 1) the experience of psychological benefits, 2) the creation of social support, and 3) the enhancement of physical health. These themes indicate that, through serious involvement in certain physical activities, participants gain various health benefits, which may contribute to successful aging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The theory of planned behaviour was used to examine intentions of Korean tourism major students to acquire foreign language skills (FLS) and uncover the beliefs that contribute to that intention. Belief elicitation and belief measurement questionnaires were collected from 38 and 242 students at Woosong University in November and December 2010. Attitudes and subjective norms were found to be significant contributors to the sample students' intention to acquire FLS. Favourable attitudes and perceived social pressure should be maintained by targeting the behavioural beliefs and normative beliefs to heighten the intention level. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Conclusions: Outcomes following cochlear implantation in children with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection were almost equivalent to those of children with GJB2 mutation-related sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Although our patients with developmental disorder showed poor auditory performance and speech and language skills after cochlear implantation, SNHL with developmental disorder should not be a contraindication for the procedure. Objective: Congenital CMV infection accounts for approximately 20% of all cases of neonatal hearing loss, while the GJB2 mutation accounts for 30-50% of all cases of profound nonsyndromic hearing loss. Here, outcomes for auditory behavior and speech and language skills were compared in children with congenital CMV infection or GJB2 mutation who received cochlear implantation for profound SNHL. Methods: Five children with asymptomatic congenital CMV infection and seven children with GJB2 mutation-related SNHL, with and without developmental disorder, underwent cochlear implantation. Hearing level and speech and language development were evaluated post-implantation using IT-MAIS, MUSS, and S-S method. Results: The IT-MAIS and MUSS scores of the congenital CMV infection group and the GJB2 mutation group continued to increase for 4 years after implantation.
