In order to determine habitat preferences of aquatic Oligochaeta in the Lake District area of Turkey, quantitative sampling and measurements of some of the selected physicochemical variables were done seasonally from June 1999 to November 2000. Total of 45 Oligochaeta species were collected from 75 different habitats. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) explained 81% of the correlation among species and environmental variables with about % 32.5 of variance. Influential variables on the species distribution from most to least affective follow as water depth, Secchi depth, pH, dissolved oxygen, elevation, temperature, CaCO3=, electrical conductivity and salinity. Species were clustered into six groups with Unweighted Pair Group Mean Averages (UPGMA) analyses based on species occurrence. Overall, results suggest that each Oligochaeta species has species-specific habitat preferences although some of them overlap in their requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many large and small lakes of varying depths are present in the Eastern Black Sea Range of Turkey, the nation's third most important glacial region following the Ağğğrıand Cilo-Sat mountain ranges. During the present study, 6 expeditions to collect aquatic oligochaetes from these lakes were conducted in July and August of 2005, 2006, and 2007; qualitative and quantitative samples were collected from 59 glacial lakes. We present and analyze the dominancy and distribution of aquatic oligochaete assemblages and their relation to environmental factors (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, salinity, turbidity, PO4 -3-P, HCO3- , organic carbon, hardness, Ca2+, Mg2+, Si, water depth, and altitude) using classifi cation and ordination techniques. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to characterize the relationship between oligochaetes and the environmental variables. As a result, we determined the 4 most important environmental variables (elevation, water depth, dissolved oxygen, and temperature) aff ecting species distribution in general. Sampling localities were clustered into 8 groups with the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) based on physicochemical characteristics. The relationships between the total number of individuals and environmental measurements were determined by a simple analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. Macro invertebrate communities and environmental variables were assessed in the Küçük Menderes coastal wetland area. The delta of the Küçük Menderes River is considered one of the important bird areas of Turkey and is accepted as a B class wetland area by the international Ramsar Convention. In this paper we present and analyze the dominance and distribution patterns of assemblages of macro invertebrates in the wetland area of the Küçük Menderes River and relate them to environmental factors using classification and ordination techniques. Environmental data were used to explain biological variation using multivariate techniques provided by the program CANOCO. The ordination method CCA (Canonical Correspondence Analysis) was applied to evaluate the relationships between the distribution of macro invertebrate assemblages and environmental variables. Hardness, HCO3 and salinity were found to be the primary factors affecting the structures of the observed communities. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) was used as a classification technique. This analysis classified sites into five groups based on similarities in macro invertebrate composition. Gammarus aequicauda was a TWINSPAN indicator for the brackishwater localities, while Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Chironomus anthracinus and Limnodrilus udekemianus were a TWINSPAN indicator for the almost brackish-freshwater localities. A new species of Enchytraeidae, Marionina triplex sp. n. is described from an intertidal mussel bank in Sinop, southern Black Sea coast of Turkey. Marionina Michaelsen, 1889 is a widely distributed and heterogeneous assemblage of species, but while awaiting a revision the new species is placed here, as it appears to belong to a group of small enchytraeids currently associated with this genus. The new species in some aspects resembles other species reported from the Mediterranean-Black Sea area [M. adriaticus Vejdovský, 1877; M. argentea (Michaelsen, 1889); M. brevis Finogenova, 1972; M. spicula (Frey & Leuckhart, 1847)] and some species described from elsewhere (M. cana Marcus, 1965; M. singula Ude, 1896; M. sublitoralis Erséus, 1976; M. ulstrupae Healy, 1996), but it can be distinguished by its body length, number of segments, number and form of chaetae, shape and size of pharyngeal glands and spermathecae, etc. The new species is only 1.4-1.8 mm long, with 20-25 segments, and is thus one of the smallest marine enchytraeids known. It has mostly three chaetae per bundle, and spermathecae with the ampulla of about the same size as the ectal duct, and with a few gland cells attached to the base of the ectal duct. Two expeditions were carried out during July 1996 and July 1997 in order to determine the Oligochaeta fauna of 16 high altitude lakes located in the Taurus Mountains in south-west Anatolia (Turkey). No previous faunistic studies exist from the Taurus Mountains regarding physico-chemical features and Oligochaeta fauna. Fifteen species were identified, comprised of the families Tubificidae (11 species), Naididae (3 species), and Lumbriculidae (1 species). Among the samples, Tubificidae were the most dominant (73% of the specimens), followed by Naididae (20%) and Lumbriculidae (7%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim of identifying the oligochaeta fauna of Topçam Dam-Lake, located on the north-western slopes of the East Menteşe Mountains (Aegean region, Turkey), a number of samples were collected monthly between June 1999 and June 2000. Having no previous faunistic studies, some physico-chemical features and oligochaeta fauna of the dam-lake were determined for the first time in this research. Consequently, 11 species were determined, 9 species from Tubificidae, and 2 species from Naididae. Tubificid Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was the dominant Oligochaeta species and represented 64.64% of the total Oligochaeta community in the dam-lake. In order to determine the macrobenthic invertebrate fauna of Lake Egrigöl, located at 2000 m in the central Taurus Mountains, 4 field studies were conducted between June and September, 2000, and June and September, 2001. The specimens were obtained by collection of mud samples using an Ekman-Birge grab and by sifting with a fine 500 µm sieve, and were preserved in 4% formaldehyde solution. Additional samplings were also performed from the shore with hand nets with a mesh size of 180 µm. On average, 1036 benthic invertebrate specimens were found per square meter in Lake Egrigöl; 939 of these specimens were oligochaets, 95 were chironomid larvae and 2 were chaoborid larvae. With regard to the rational distribution of these groups, oligochaets were the predominant group with 90.64%, followed by chironomid larvae (9.17%) and chaoborid larvae (0.19%). With regard to the rational distribution of these groups by station, Station 4 (25.90%) was the richest and Station 3 (15.05%) the poorest. Since all, the mollusk specimens from the mud samples were already dead and their shells were decalcified, mollusk species are not included in the averages. Amphipod specimens were sampled from a spring just beyond the lake, and Decapoda specimens sampled from the shore are also not included in the averages. As a result of samplings performed from each meter from the shore to 9 m in depth in the first station, the maximum number of specimens was found at the seventh meter. It was also noticed that oligochaets were abundant at the seventh and eighth meters, whereas chironomids were abundant at the second and sixth meters. The abundances of the groups in respect of months were analyzed using the chi-square test and differences between distributions of the groups according to depths were analyzed using 2-way variance analysis. The specimens were collected from 16 stations between February 1998 and May 1999 with the aim of seasonally determining the Oligochaeta and Aphanoneura fauna of the Gediz Delta. The specimens obtained by collection of mud samples with an Ekman grab and elimination with a fine 500 µm sieve were preserved in 4% formaldehyde solution. A total of 47 species were determined, comprising 25 species from Tubificidae, 17 species from Naididae, 3 species from Enchytraeidae and 2 species from Aeolosomatidae.
