This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Orbach and Mikulincer Mental Pain Scale-8 (OMMP-8), which enables the assessment of suicidality in a short time.Patients and Methods: We conducted this study with 148 individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder and 130 healthy controls. We administered the Hamilton Depression Scale (HDRS), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSIS), and Mee Bunney Psychological Pain Assessment Scale (MBPPAS) to all participants.Results: Cronbach’s alpha values were 0.96, 0.97, and 0.98 for Factors 1, 2, and 3, respectively, and 0.92 for the entire scale. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) proved the 3-factor structure of the scale. The OMMP-8 total score and HDRS (r = 0.851), BSIS (r = 0.836), BHS (r = 0.825), and MBPPAS (r = 0.881) total scores were statistically significantly correlated, indicating convergent and concurrent validity of the scale. The scale successfully discriminated between depression and control groups (89.6%) and participants with and without suicide attempts in the depression group (82.4%).Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the Turkish version of the OMMP-8 scale is valid and reliable for both individuals with depression and healthy controls and can be used in studies investigating suicide risk.Keywords: mental pain, psychological pain, psychache, Orbach Mikulincer Mental Pain Scale-8

It is assumed that orthorexia nervosa shares some phenomenological features with anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and other mental disorders. Individuals with orthorexic tendencies may have high physical activity as well as a healthy diet. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of orthorexia nervosa with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, eating attitudes, and several sociodemographic features.Patients and Methods: We included 63 patients diagnosed with OCD, 63 healthy volunteers who perform physical exercises at least three days a week, at least 30 minutes a day, and 63 healthy volunteers who do not perform physical exercises regularly. Sociodemographic data form, Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, ORTO-11 Scale, Eating Attitude Test, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Disorders (SCID-5 CV) were administered to all participants. OCD data form was also applied to patients with OCD diagnosis.Results: We found a statistically significant relationship between current order-symmetry obsessions and orthorexic tendencies in patients with OCD (p< 0.05). There was no relationship between the severity of the disorder and orthorexia nervosa in patients with OCD (p> 0.05). Orthorexic tendencies were found to increase as impaired eating attitudes increased in participants who regularly performed physical exercises and patients with OCD (p< 0.05). The orthorexic tendencies of participants who regularly performed physical exercises were higher than those diagnosed with OCD and healthy individuals who did not perform physical exercises.Conclusion: The absence of a significant relationship between disorder severity and orthorexia nervosa in patients diagnosed with OCD and the increase in orthorexic tendencies as the deterioration in eating attitudes increases in both patients with OCD and the participants who regularly perform physical exercises suggest that orthorexia nervosa may be closer to the eating disorders group than obsessive-compulsive spectrum. Studies with large samples and different diagnoses are needed to determine the place of orthorexia nervosa in diagnosis and classification systems.Keywords: orthorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating attitudes, exercise

Early determining of risk factors provides an opportunity for intervention. The mediating effect of psychological pain (also known as psychache) on suicide has been shown in various disorders but has not been investigated in patients with OCD. In this study, we aimed to show the relationship between psychological pain and other clinical variables and suicide in OCD patients.Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 67 patients diagnosed with OCD according to DSM-5 criteria with no comorbid psychiatric diagnosis who applied to the psychiatric outpatient clinic of Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine and 63 healthy controls. Among the OCD patients, 12 had previous suicide attempts. In addition to the sociodemographic data form, participants filled out the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS), the Psychache Scale (PS), the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSIS), and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HDS).Results: OCD group’s median obsession, compulsion, and the total scores of YBOCS, and the mean PS scores were higher than the control group. There was no difference between the sociodemographic variables of OCD patients with and without previous suicide attempts such as age, gender, years of education, place of residence, marital, and occupational status. The median scores of obsession, avoidance, global severity, and indecisiveness subdimensions of YBOCS, the mean BSIS and PS scores, the rates of current aggressive, current contamination, and the past religious obsessions were higher in the suicidal group. There were moderately significant relationships in the same direction between the PS, BSIS, and total YBOCS scores. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that only the PS scores predicted previous suicide attempts.Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that current aggressive, current contamination, past religious obsessions, and the higher psychological pain are related to previous suicide attempts in OCD patients. Our regression analysis supports Shneidman’s hypothesis: there would be no suicide without psychache. Relieving psychache in OCD patients may reduce suicide attempts even if there is no diagnosis of comorbid depression.Keywords: obsessive compulsive disorder, suicide, psychological pain, psychache

4. Nonreciprocal transmission enabled by time modulation of penetrable metasurface assisted by surface waves.

Abstract

This study introduces a novel approach to achieving nonreciprocal transmission by implementing time modulation to the bianisotropic metasurface. For the first time, we present the analytical solution of the excitation of anti-symmetric surface waves on penetrable metasurfaces depending on the excitation direction. Exploiting this finding, we numerically demonstrate asymmetric control of the transmission coefficient under a fast-time scale by employing solely time modulation. This approach lowers the complexity of the modulation scheme and implementation encountered in the space-time modulation technique. We develop and simulate a 3D unit cell model in the microwave domain, which forms a surface cavity that incorporates time-varying capacitors. The impedance transfer matrix method and harmonic balance numerical solutions are applied to the retrieved equivalent circuit for the numerical simulations. The results reveal optimized phase-coherent and incoherent nonreciprocal transmission at the significant isolation level (≥ 40 dB) for forward and backward transmissions. We discuss the consistency and discrepancies between numerical methods and consider the impact of the losses and nonlinearity on the metastructure performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Construction workers exposed to extreme heat in hot and humid climates are at risk of heat stress and heat-related illnesses. Although several studies have been conducted on heat stress research in the construction industry, only a few have focused on safety training and its effects on improving the knowledge of the construction workforce. This study examines the effects of training on the knowledge of the future construction workforce for heat stress prevention. The training was conducted for the future construction workforce (i.e., undergraduate construction senior students). Pre-tests and post-tests were administered before and after the training to determine the trainees’ knowledge. In addition, self-assessment surveys were administered after the training to evaluate trainees’ perception of knowledge improvement through the training. The questions of the tests and assessment were designed to ascertain the participants’ knowledge of the risk factors, types of heat-related illnesses, and prevention strategies. The results illustrate an overall significant positive impact of training on the participants’ knowledge and ability to protect themselves from heat stress.

Objective: Pneumocystis jirovecii (P. jirovecii) is an opportunistic pathogen in humans. Early diagnosis and optimal treatment of patients with P. jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) remains a key priority. This study investigated P. jirovecii in patients with lung cancer using the nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and examined the relationship between P. jirovecii and clinical findings. Methods: The study included 60 patients with lung cancer and 30 patients without lung cancer. The bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid samples of these 90 individuals were taken for diagnostic purposes in the University of Health Sciences Turkey, Van Training and Research Hospital, Clinic of Chest Diseases. Patient information was recorded. After DNA isolation from the BAL fluid samples taken from patients, the nested-PCR protocol for amplification of mtLSUrRNA in P. jirovecii was performed. Results: P. jirovecii DNA was detected in 40 (66.67%) of the lung cancer patients included in the study and in six (20%) patients without lung cancer, that is, in 46 (51.11%) patients. The rate of nested-PCR positivity in the lung cancer group was significantly higher than that in the non-lung cancer group (p=0.0001). 37. The missing part of the past, current, and future distribution model of Quercus ilex L.: the eastern edge

Abstract

Ongoing climate change is anticipated to shift the geographical distribution range and impact local abundance of tree species by altering their ecological conditions. Given the lower resilience of populations at the species’ range edges, locally adapted range-edge populations are critical to the species’ survival under climate change. In this context, the distribution of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) at the eastern border of its distribution range was assessed under current, past, and foreseeable future climate change scenarios, using species distribution models (SDMs). Current SDMs were developed using WorldClim 1.4 climate data as baseline at 30-second spatial resolution by using Generalized Boosted Regression Models (GBM) and showed moderate model performance. To compare temporal transferability and account for climate uncertainties of two versions of future climate data (CMIP5 and CMIP6), we used 4 Global Circulation Models (GCMs), 2 emission scenarios (moderate RCP45/SSP245 and pessimistic - RCP85/SSP585) for 2 different periods in the future (2040-2060 and 2060-2080). We also made predictions about the past (Mid-Holocene, about 6.000 years ago) using 4 CMIP5 GCMs. Most important variables of SDMs were distance to the sea, isothermality (BIO3), annual precipitation (BIO12), the mean temperature of driest quarter (BIO9), and the precipitation of driest month (BIO14). Our findings showed that the species’ potential distribution range probably used to be much wider in the mid-Holocene, which implies that the holm oak had a broader climatic niche during this period. The future projections indicate that its distribution area in the eastern border might increase particularly in the Black Sea region, while decreasing in the Aegean region resulting in a likely northward range shift in Turkey. However, other variables not included in our models such as land use changes might drive future shifts. Due to its high resistance to dry conditions and resilience, this species might continue to spread in southwestern Turkey in 2050s and 2070s. Finally, our study fills the gap in potential distribution predictions in context of climate change for the eastern boundary of the holm oak.
