Regarding social class differences in redistributive preferences, previous research demonstrated the explanations of self-interest perspective were limited. From an ideology perspective, the present study uncovered that attributions for rich-poor gap could mediate the relation between social class and redistributive preferences. In study 1, we conducted a measurement-of-mediation design among adults (N = 448) with the results showing that compared with those from lower social classes, higher-class individuals were more likely to make internal attributions for rich-poor gap, in turn, had lower redistributive preferences. And these associations held controlling for self-interest. In study 2, we conducted an experimental-causal-chain design with the results showing that the experimentally induced higher social class increased internal attributions for rich-poor gap (study 2A, N = 128), and priming internal attributions for rich-poor gap lowered redistributive preferences (study 2B, N = 155). Patients diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) often present at intermediate to advanced stages, with inherently limited therapeutic options available. There is an urgent need to identify novel therapeutic targets. In this study, by screening STS data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases, KIFC1 is identified as a potential biomarker and a promising therapeutic target for STS. Notably, a significant increase in KIFC1 levels, which exhibited a strong correlation with a poor prognosis in STS patients is observed. The findings revealed that knockout of KIFC1 suppressed STS growth both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, KIFC1 is found to regulate cellular senescence in STS, which has not been reported before. that targeting KIFC1 induced cellular senescence via interacting with FXR1, an RNA‐binding protein is discovered, thereby further stabilizing MAD2L1 mRNA in an m6A‐dependent manner. Additionally, the suppression of KIFC1 markedly diminished the growth of patient‐derived xenografts (PDX) and triggered senescence. This study provides the first evidence that KIFC1 inhibition induces cellular senescence through MAD2L1, underscoring KIFC1 as a novel prognostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target for STS. BACKGROUND: Coronary artery segmentation is a prerequisite in computer-aided diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). However, segmentation of coronary arteries in Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA) images faces several challenges. The current segmentation approaches are unable to effectively address these challenges and existing problems such as the need for manual interaction or low segmentation accuracy. OBJECTIVE: A Multi-scale Feature Learning and Rectification (MFLR) network is proposed to tackle the challenges and achieve automatic and accurate segmentation of coronary arteries. METHODS: The MFLR network introduces a multi-scale feature extraction module in the encoder to effectively capture contextual information under different receptive fields. In the decoder, a feature correction and fusion module is proposed, which employs high-level features containing multi-scale information to correct and guide low-level features, achieving fusion between the two-level features to further improve segmentation performance. RESULTS: The MFLR network achieved the best performance on the dice similarity coefficient, Jaccard index, Recall, F1-score, and 95% Hausdorff distance, for both in-house and public datasets. CONCLUSION: Experimental results demonstrate the superiority and good generalization ability of the MFLR approach. Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a zoonotic pathogen that can infect both humans and animals. Among the 13 types of fimbrial operons in S. Enteritidis, the highly conserved Peg fimbriae play a crucial role in the adhesion and invasion of S. Enteritidis into host cells but are not well studied. In this study, we identified the ATP synthase subunit alpha (ATPase α) as a ligand of Peg fimbriae using ligand blotting and mass spectrometry techniques. We confirmed the in vitro binding of ATPase α to the purified adhesion protein (PegD). Furthermore, we used siRNA to suppress the expression of ATPase α gene Atp5a1 in Leghorn male hepatoma (LMH) cells, which resulted in a significant reduction in the adhesion rate of S. Enteritidis to the cells (P < 0.05). The findings in this study provide insight into the mechanism of S. Enteritidis infection through Peg fimbriae and highlight the importance of ATPase α in the adhesion process. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Ligand blotting was performed to screen the ligand of S. Colorectal cancer is a common malignant tumor. A major factor in the high mortality rate of colorectal cancer is the emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR). Overexpression of the ABCG2 gene in cancer cells directly leads to MDR. Finding new inhibitors of ABCG2 may be an effective way to overcome drug resistance. We found that the compound GSK2606414 enhanced the sensitivity of the ABCG2 substrate to the chemotherapeutic drugs mitoxantrone and doxorubicin in ABCG2-overexpressing multidrug-resistant colorectal cancer cells by increasing their intracellular accumulation without affecting the protein expression of ABCG2. Molecular docking experiments predicted that GSK2606414 could stably bind in the drug-binding pocket of ABCG2. In conclusion, GSK2606414 can sensitize ABCG2-overexpressed multidrug-resistant colorectal cancer cells to chemotherapy drugs and can be used as a potential inhibitor of ABCG2. Previous studies have reported contradictory relationships between social class and prosocial behaviour. Some studies have found that higher class individuals are more likely to exhibit prosocial behaviour than lower class individuals; whereas in others the opposite was observed. In view of this difference, this study proposed and tested the moderating role of perception of class mobility. Studies 1 and 2, using different operational definitions, revealed that the interaction effect between social class and perceived class mobility on prosocial behaviour was significant. Under the condition of lower perception of class mobility, lower class individuals showed less prosocial behaviour than higher class individuals. When perception of class mobility was higher, however, the prosocial behaviour of lower class individuals increased, showing no significant difference between lower and higher class individuals. Study 3 further explored why perception of class mobility might influence lower class individuals' prosocial behaviour and supported a mediating role of system‐justifying belief. Objective: This study was designed to establish and validate promising and reliable nomograms for predicting the survival of angiosarcoma (AS) patients. Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was queried to collect the clinical information of 785 AS patients between 2004 and 2015. Data were split into a training cohort (n = 549) and a validation cohort (n = 236) without any preference. Univariate Cox and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to analyze the clinical parameters. Independent prognostic factors were then identified. Two nomograms were constructed to predict overall survival (OS) and cancer‐specific survival (CSS) at 3 and 5 years. Finally, the models were evaluated using concordance indices (C‐indices), calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 785 individuals were included in this analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses revealed that age, tumor size, and stage were prognostic factors independently associated with the OS of AS. Tumor site, tumor size, and stage were associated with the CSS of AS. Based on the statistical results and clinical significance of variables, nomograms were built. The nomograms for OS and CSS had C‐indices of 0.666 and 0.654, respectively. The calibration curves showed good agreement between the predictive values and the actual values. DCA also indicated that the nomograms were clinically useful. Conclusion: We established nomograms with good predictive ability that could provide clinicians with better predictions about the clinical outcomes of AS patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) provides carbon substrates and energy sources for sediment microbes driving benthic biogeochemical processes. The interactions between microbes and DOM are dynamic and complex and require the understanding based on fine-scale microbial community and physicochemical profiling. In this study, we characterized the porewater DOM composition in a 300-cm sediment core from the Pearl River estuary, China, and examined the interactions between DOM and archaeal and bacterial communities. DOM composition were highly stratified and associated with changing microbial communities. Compared to bacteria, the amplicon sequence variants of archaea showed significant Pearson correlations (r ≥ 0.65, P < 0.01) with DOM molecules of low H/C ratios, high C number and double bond equivalents, indicating that the distribution of archaea was closely correlated to recalcitrant DOM while bacteria were associated with relatively labile compounds. This was supported by the presence of auxiliary enzyme families essential for lignin degradation and bcrABCD, UbiX genes for anaerobic aromatic reduction in metagenome-assembled genomes of Bathyarchaeia. Our study demonstrates that niche differentiation between benthic bacteria and archaea may have important consequences in carbon metabolism, particularly for the transformation of recalcitrant organic carbon that may be predominant in aged marine sediments. Background: Unplanned excision (UPE) of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is often chosen in the early phase by general physicians without any radiological evaluation. Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of UPE on the clinical outcomes of patients with STS of the trunk and extremity. Materials and Methods: Patients with STS of the trunk and extremity who underwent R0 resection between 1998 and 2016 were included and divided into the UPE and planned excision (PE) groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to control the selection bias. The endpoints were disease-specific survival (DSS), local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and metastasis-free survival (MFS). Results: In total, 458 patients (277 males, 181 females; median age: 43 years) were included: 329 (71.8%) in the PE group and 129 (28.2%) in the UPE group. The follow-up time ranged from 7.1 to 313.78 months, with a median of 112.18 months. UPE patients were more likely to have a smaller or superficial lesion and were more frequently administered adjuvant therapy. After PSM, compared with the PE group, the UPE group had a longer LRFS (P=0.015), but there was no difference between the two groups regarding DSS and MFS. Residual disease was observed in 77.5% of the re-resected specimens in the UPE group and was a risk factor for DSS (P = 0.046) and MFS (P = 0.029) but was not associated with local recurrence (LR) (P=0.475) or LRFS (P=0.334). Moreover, we found no difference in DSS, LRFS or MFS according to the interval from UPE to definitive resection. Conclusion: STS treated with UPE had distinct characteristics. Patients who undergo UPE followed by an additional wide R0 resection have similar oncological survival compared to patients who undergo an initial PE, although the high incidence of residual tumor in the UPE group leads to an unfavorable clinical course. Sense of entitlement can be defined as a pervasive sense that one deserves more and is entitled to more than others. Two studies examined the relationship between social class and sense of entitlement and how this relationship is moderated by system-justifying belief (SJB) in China. In Study 1, we conducted a survey among adults (N = 669) with results showing that social class was positively correlated with sense of entitlement for those endorsing SJB, but negatively correlated with sense of entitlement for those opposing SJB. In Study 2, we conducted an experiment among undergraduates (N = 128) with both social class and SJB being primed and the results replicated the pattern: the positive effect of primed higher social class on pay entitlement existed only for those primed with high SJB, and was dampened for those primed with low SJB. Therefore, higher-class individuals do not necessarily feel more entitled, and SJB may play an important role in shaping their sense of entitlement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We aimed to study the association between sperm DNA fragmentation and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) in the Chinese population via a retrospective observational study of Chinese couples who had experienced RPL between May 2013 and August 2018. The study population included 461 men from couples with RPL and 411 men from a control group (couples with clinical pregnancy via in vitro fertilization owing to female causes). Routine semen analysis, sperm chromatin analysis, and microscopic (high-power) morphological analysis were performed using semen samples. Semen samples were assessed for volume, sperm count, and motility. The sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) was calculated, and the median DFI was obtained. Men were categorized as having normal (37.8%; DFI ≤ 15.0%), moderate (33.6%; 15.0% < DFI < 30.0%), or severe (28.6%; DFI ≥ 30.0%) DNA fragmentation levels. The percentage of men with severe DNA fragmentation was significantly higher in the RPL (42.3%) group than that in the control group (13.1%), whereas the percentage of men with normal levels of DNA fragmentation was significantly lower in the RPL group (22.8%) than that in the control group (54.7%). Subsequent analysis also demonstrated that the sperm DNA fragmentation rate had a moderate reverse correlation with the sperm progressive motility rate (r = −0.47, P < 0.001) and the total motile sperm count (r = −0.31, P < 0.001). We found a positive correlation between RPL and sperm DNA fragmentation. The results suggest that increased sperm DNA damage is associated with RPL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preparation of superhydrophobic carbon materials from lignocellulosic biomass waste via one‐step carbonization is very difficult due to the existences of polar functional groups and ashes, which are extremely hydrophilic. Herein, superhydrophobic carbon materials can be facilely synthesized by catalytic pyrolysis of biomass waste using FeCl3 as catalyst. The results show that the surface energy of lignin‐derived char (CharL) is significantly reduced to 19.25 mN m−1 from 73.29 mN m−1, and the water contact angle increased from 0 to 151.5°, by interaction with FeCl3. Multiple characterizations and control experiments demonstrate that FeCl3 can catalyze the pyrolytic volatiles to form a rough graphite and diamond‐like carbon layer that isolates the polar functional groups and ashes on CharL, contributing to the superhydrophobicity of the CharL. The one‐step catalytic pyrolysis is able to convert different natural biomass waste (e.g., lignin, cellulose, sawdust, rice husk, maize straw, and pomelo peel) into superhydrophobic carbon materials. The status-legitimacy hypothesis proposes that low-status groups are more inclined to justify the status quo as fair and legitimate than high-status groups. Although there are some research evidences for this hypothesis, many studies have found the opposite result, that disadvantaged groups are more dissatisfied with the social system. To resolve this disagreement, this article integrates relevant ideas and empirical research in three aspects. First, the conceptual approach emphasises that the controversy is a result of different operational definitions of social status and system justification in previous studies. The second approach, focusing on moderator variables, proposes that the disputes over past studies are probably due to moderator variables, which can influence the relationship between status and system justification. The third approach, based on psychological mechanisms, proposes that system justification theory cannot completely explain the psychological underpinnings of status differences in system justification, and in order to clarify this, it is necessary to explore other psychological processes. Future studies should continue to examine the mediation mechanisms and boundary conditions of the status-legitimacy hypothesis and may try to establish a nonlinear hypothesis.
