Abstract Research in calling has increased in recent years, yet the lack of attention on the managerial antecedents and prosocial behavioral outcome of calling orientation presents key challenges to meet the needs of the organizational management. Based on the social impact theory, this study examined the predicting effects of a team leader’s transformational leadership on followers’ calling orientation, and the effects of team members’ calling orientation on their helping behaviors at work. The experimental study and the survey were conducted to test the hypotheses. The results showed that a leader’s transformational leadership was positively related to followers’ calling orientation. A leader’s organizational status moderated the relationship between a leader’s transformational leadership and followers’ calling orientation. Followers’ calling orientation was positively related to their helping behaviors at work. The results provide important implications for cultivating employees’ calling orientation in the workplace.

Under high humidity and high temperature conditions, the quality of pepper essential oil easily deteriorates, and the oxidation of oil restricts its application, especially for the insolubility in water. This study investigated pepper essential oil encapsulated in Pickering emulsion with octenyl succinic acid starch, which was effectively able to reduce 100 times of the release rate. The smooth surface and complete particles of the emulsion were observed and no new chemical bonds were formed. The minimum particle sizes were 2.05 µm and 1.89 µm, when the Pickering emulsion was set to different storage conditions at pH 5 and 0.1 M NaCl, respectively. During gastrointestinal digestion, the release of essential oils was effectively delayed in the Pickering emulsion and the digestibility of the emulsion was 16.93% in 120 min. Compared with untreated cells, Pickering emulsion can effectively inhibit the proliferation of MCF‐7 (52.71%). All these results indicate that OSA starch stabilized pepper essential oil can effectively increase solubility, improve stability, and expand the application range. Given the critical role of the sustainable careers of employees in their survival and development, interest in how to improve employees' sustainable careers is growing rapidly. Previous studies primarily focused on the role of contextual factors, and neglected the role of agentic factors such as positive affectivity. Based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, the aim of this study is to investigate whether, how and when positive affectivity affects sustainable careers. A time-lagged study with two waves of data collected 8 months apart was conducted. With a sample of 580 employees in China, regression analyses showed that positive affectivity influenced employees' sustainable careers indicated by vigor and level of pay; cognitive reappraisal mediated the positive relationships between positive affectivity and sustainable careers; and organizational commitment moderated the indirect effects of positive affectivity on sustainable careers via cognitive reappraisal. We drew on the theory of conservation of resources to examine the social effects of a leader's work engagement on followers' psychological capital, work engagement, and job satisfaction. With a sample of 530 employees nested within 54 teams, we tested our hypotheses using multilevel path analyses in Mplus. As hypothesized, we found that the leader's work engagement was positively related to followers' psychological capital, work engagement, and job satisfaction. Further, followers' psychological capital mediated the relationship between the leader's work engagement and followers' work engagement and job satisfaction. In particular, the leader's work engagement was positively related to followers' psychological capital, which, in turn, was positively associated with both their work engagement and job satisfaction. Implications of our findings are that if leaders openly express their identification with their work and put great effort into their job, followers are more likely to achieve high levels of team effectiveness. Although numerous studies have explored the factors influencing entrepreneurial activity, there is a lack of a theoretical basis for linking these factors to entrepreneurship behavioral intention. The current study uses the theory of self-regulating attitude to construct a theoretical model of examining the relationship among cognitive bias, entrepreneurial emotion, and entrepreneurship intention. A total of 312 valid samples were collected from college students at a Chinese university. The bootstrapping method was used to test the multi-mediation hypotheses. Our research found that positive entrepreneurial emotion plays a mediating role in the relationship between optimism and entrepreneurship intention, whereas negative entrepreneurial emotion plays a mediating role in the relationship between overconfidence and entrepreneurship intention. These findings underline the importance of a correct understanding of cognitive bias and entrepreneurial emotion in the process of entrepreneurship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite an increase in research on calling orientation, few studies have investigated its antecedents. Drawing on social learning theory, we hypothesized that subordinates' perceptions of their supervisor's role modeling mediate the relationship between supervisor's and subordinates' calling orientations. Supervisor's organizational status is supposed to augment the trickle-down process for calling orientation. We used multilevel modeling to test these hypotheses in a sample of 738 subordinates nested in 77 work teams in Chinese firm. We found that supervisor's calling orientation was positively related to subordinate's calling orientation and that the relationship was fully mediated by subordinates' perceptions of role modeling. Additionally, the relationship between supervisor's calling orientation and subordinates' calling orientation via role modeling was moderated by supervisor's organizational status at the second stage. Drawing on the inducement–contribution employment model, this article examines the mediation of affective commitment on the relationship between hierarchical plateau and turnover intention and how job content plateau moderates the relationship. The hypotheses are tested in a sample consisting of 288 Chinese employees from a variety of industries. The results of the hierarchical multiple regression analyses show that hierarchical plateau is positively related to turnover intention, and affective commitment fully mediates the relationship. The moderated mediation analysis reveals that the mediation of affective commitment on hierarchical plateau–turnover intention relation is conditional upon job content plateau. Specifically, job content plateau weakens rather than strengthens the effect of hierarchical plateau on affective commitment and the resultant turnover intention. The predictability of a dense advection fog event on 21 February 2007 over north China (NC) is investigated with ensemble simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). Members with the best and worst simulation are selected from the ensemble, and their initial condition (IC) differences are explored. To test the sensitivity of fog simulation to those differences, the model is initialized with ICs that change linearly from the worst member to the best member, and the changes in simulated results are examined. The improvement in simulations due to the linear improvement of ICs is found to be monotonic. The IC differences at lower levels are of more influence to the simulation than IC differences at higher levels. By removing the IC differences of each meteorological variable individually, it is found that improvements in potential temperature and horizontal wind are more important than that of water vapor mixing ratio in this case. Additionally, the linear improvement in each meteorological variable also contributes monotonically to the simulated results. The budget analyses of the tendency of potential temperature and water vapor mixing ratio show that turbulence mixing and advection are the major factors contributing to the formation of fog. The correct initial temperature field ensures the formation and maintenance of an inversion, and the correct initial wind field ensures the correct transport of temperature and moisture in this case. An ensemble Kalman filter data assimilation system for the Weather Research and Forecasting Model is used with ensemble-based sensitivity analysis to explore observing strategies and observation targeting for tropical cyclones. The case selected for this study is Typhoon Morakot (2009), a western Pacific storm that brought record-breaking rainfall to Taiwan. Forty-eight hours prior to making landfall, ensemble sensitivity analysis using a 50-member convection-permitting ensemble predicts that dropsonde observations located in the southwest quadrant of the typhoon will have the highest impact on reducing the forecast uncertainty of the track, intensity, and rainfall of Morakot. A series of observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) demonstrate that assimilating synthetic dropsonde observations located in regions with higher predicted observation impacts will, on average, lead to a better rainfall forecast than in regions with smaller predicted impacts. However, these OSSEs also suggest that the effectiveness of the current-generation ensemble-based tropical cyclone targeting strategies may be limited. The limitations may be due to strong nonlinearity in the governing dynamics of the typhoon (e.g., moist convection), the accuracy of the ensemble background covariance, and the projection of individual dropsonde observations to the complicated targeted sensitivity vectors from the ensemble. Annual and seasonal trends of precipitable water (PW) and relative humidity (RH) at 850, 700, and 500 hPa are studied using the data from 106 radiosonde stations over China during the period 1979-2005. Analysis shows evidence of an increase in PW associated with the slight warming observed in the lower to midtroposphere over China. The northern part of China shows a significant upward trend of PW in summer, and drying of the atmosphere in winter is found in most regions over China. Annual and seasonal trends in RH at the 850-, 700-, and 500-hPa levels show no significant trends in most regions in China except for Xinjiang, which shows an upward trend, and central China, where there was a downward trend in RH at 500 hPa. It is found that changes in PW are coincident with the warming of the surface and the lower to midtroposphere. The RH in the lower to midtroposphere in most regions over China has remained steady during the most recent 30 years, as might be expected given the increasing of PW and the warming above the surface. The long-term trend of precipitation over China may be linked to the trends of PW and RH at the lower level and midlevel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the prediction and predictability of the recent catastrophic rainfall and flooding event over Taiwan induced by Typhoon Morakot (2009) with a state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction model. A high-resolution convection-permitting mesoscale ensemble, initialized with analysis and flow-dependent perturbations obtained from a real-time global ensemble data assimilation system, is found to be able to predict this record-breaking rainfall event, producing probability forecasts potentially valuable to the emergency management decision makers and the general public. Since all the advanced modeling and data assimilation techniques used here are readily available for real-time operational implementation provided sufficient computing resources are made available, this study demonstrates the potential and need of using ensemble-based analysis and forecasting, along with enhanced computing, in predicting extreme weather events like Typhoon Morakot at operational centers. Exosomal microRNAs (miRs/miRNAs) have been reported to be associated with cervical cancer. The aim of the present study was to investigate circulating exosomal miRNA as a biomarker for cervical cancer diagnosis. In the present study, samples from 6 patients with cervical cancer and 6 healthy control subjects were retrieved for exosomal RNA-sequencing. The results revealed that a total of 39 miRNAs were differentially expressed between patients with cervical cancer and healthy controls (P<0.001; fold-change >2.0). Exosomal miR-125a-5p was further quantified in plasma from 60 subjects, which included 22 healthy individuals and 38 patients with cervical cancer. miR-16a-5p served as the reference miRNA for quantitative PCR analysis of exosomal miR-125a-5p in patients with cervical cancer and healthy individuals. The results revealed that exosomal miR-125a-5p expression levels in the patients with cervical cancer were significantly lower than those in the healthy controls (P<0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed and the results revealed that the level of plasma exosomal miR-125a-5p was a potential marker for differentiating between non-cervical cancer and cervical cancer, with an ROC area under the curve of 0.7129. At the cut-off value of 2.537 for miR-125a-5p, cervical cancer diagnostic sensitivities and specificities were 59.1 and 84.2%, respectively. The present study provides confirmation that exosomal miR-125a-5p could potentially serve as a biomarker for cervical cancer diagnosis. As shown in our previous study, cyclosporine A (CsA) promotes the proliferation, invasion and migration of villous trophoblasts, thus improving embryo implantation. In addition, the incidence of preeclampsia (PE) is decreased in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) and repeated implantation failure (RIF) treated with CsA during the first trimester. Abnormal function of extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) in early pregnancy is recognized as the pathogenetic mechanism of PE. EVTs share homology and function with pre-villous trophoblasts and villous trophoblasts; thus, we hypothesized that CsA may have the same regulatory effect on EVTs. In this study, we investigated the effects of CsA on HTR-8/SVneo trophoblasts in the extravillous layer and explored the underlying mechanisms. QPCR and Western blot (WB) analyses were performed to detect expression alterations in relevant proliferation and invasion proteins in response to different concentrations of CsA. We used an Affymetrix IVT expression microarray to examine the target genes of CsA in preeclamptic placentas versus normal placentas. Our results showed that certain concentrations of CsA could promote the proliferation, invasion and migration of HTR8/SVneo cells. CsA was also found to promote the expression of titin, MMP9, EGFR, and PRR15. TRAIL may be a target gene for CsA-mediated regulation of EVTs. By promoting the expression of related proteins and regulating the functions of HTR8/SVneo cells, CsA can promote vascular recasting and placental function, which may affect the pathogenesis of PE. • Certain concentrations of CsA could promote the proliferation, invasion and migration of HTR8/SVneo cells. • CsA was also found to promote the expression of titin, MMP9, EGFR, and PRR15. 3. Longitudinal studies have highlighted allogeneic natural killer (NK) cell-based cytotherapy for cancer immunosurveillance and immunotherapy, yet the deficiency of systematic and detailed comparison of NK cells from candidate sources including umbilical cord blood (UC) and bone marrow (BM) largely hinders the large-scale application. Herein, we isolated resident NK cells (rUC-NK, rBM-NK) from mononuclear cells (MNC), and analyzed the corresponding expanded NK cell counterparts (eUC-NK, eBM-NK). Then, the eUC-NK and eBM-NK were turned to multifaceted bioinformatics from the aspects of gene expression profiling and genetic variations. The percentages of total or activated NK cells in rBM-NK group were approximate 2-fold higher over those in the rUC-NK group, respectively. Instead, the proportion of total NK cells in eUC-NK was higher than that in the eBM-NK group, and in particular, the CD25 + memory-like NK cell subset. Furthermore, eUC-NK and eBM-NK manifested multidimensional similarities and diversities in gene expression pattern and genetic spectrum, whereas both eUC-NK and eBM-NK exhibited effective tumor killing capacity. Collectively, we dissected the cellular and transcriptomic signatures of NK cells generated from UC-MNC and BM-MNC, which supplied new literature for further exploring the characteristics of the indicated NK cells and would benefit the clinical application for cancer immunotherapy in future., Competing Interests: None., (AJCR Copyright © 2023.)

Investigation on staple crop starch of new species has been becoming the research focus of scholars at present. Based on this, the physicochemical properties and microstructural characteristics of starches isolated from Chinese mutant Musa acuminata Colla acuminata and double balbisiana (MA), Musa double acuminata cv. Pisang Mas (MAM), Musa acuminata cv. Pisang Awak (MAA), and Musa Basjoo Siebold (MBS), and Musa double acuminata and balbisiana -Prata (MAP) were investigated. Results exhibited that all starches exhibited high content of amylose (34.04-42.59%). According to the particle size, they were divided into medium (MA, MAM) (14.54-17.71 μm) and large (MAA, MBS, MAP) (23.01-23.82 μm) group. The medium group with A-type crystallization showed higher peak viscosity (PV), final viscosity, gel fracturability and gel hardness. For large group with B-type crystallization, the compact particle morphology, higher degree of crystallinity, short range order, gelatinization enthalpy, pasting temperature, lower porosity, water absorption capacity (WAC) and oil absorption capacity were found. In addition, the medium group with higher PV and gel hardness could be used as food thickening or gelling agents. The large group with higher Rc, short-range order, lower porosity and WAC could be potential to become raw material for resistant starch. All results showed the amylose content, had significant effect on the microstructure and physicochemical properties of starch samples.
