PurposeTo develop and validate a deep learning radiomics (DLR) model that uses X-ray images to predict the classification of osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs).Material and methodsThe study encompassed a cohort of 942 patients, involving examinations of 1076 vertebrae through X-ray, CT, and MRI across three distinct hospitals. The OVFs were categorized as class 0, 1, or 2 based on the Assessment System of Thoracolumbar Osteoporotic Fracture. The dataset was divided randomly into four distinct subsets: a training set comprising 712 samples, an internal validation set with 178 samples, an external validation set containing 111 samples, and a prospective validation set consisting of 75 samples. The ResNet-50 architectural model was used to implement deep transfer learning (DTL), undergoing -pre-training separately on the RadImageNet and ImageNet datasets. Features from DTL and radiomics were extracted and integrated using X-ray images. The optimal fusion feature model was identified through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression. Evaluation of the predictive capabilities for OVFs classification involved eight machine learning models, assessed through receiver operating characteristic curves employing the “One-vs-Rest” strategy. The Delong test was applied to compare the predictive performance of the superior RadImageNet model against the ImageNet model.ResultsFollowing pre-training separately on RadImageNet and ImageNet datasets, feature selection and fusion yielded 17 and 12 fusion features, respectively. Logistic regression emerged as the optimal machine learning algorithm for both DLR models. New transposon insertions are deleterious to genome stability. The RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway evolved to regulate transposon activity via DNA methylation. However, current studies have not yet clearly described the transposition regulation. ONSEN is a heat-activated retrotransposon that is activated at 37°C. The plant-specific SUPPRESSOR OF VARIEGATION 3–9 HOMOLOG (SUVH) family proteins function downstream of the RdDM pathway. The SUVH protein families are linked to TE silencing by two pathways, one through DNA methylation and the other through chromatin remodeling. In this study, we analyzed the regulation of ONSEN activity by SUVH2. We observed that ONSEN transcripts were increased; however, there was no transpositional activity in Arabidopsis suvh2 mutant. The suvh2 mutant produced siRNAs from the ONSEN locus under heat stress, suggesting that siRNAs are involved in suppressing transposition. These results provide new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of retrotransposons that involve siRNA in the RdDM pathway.

Objective: Considering the advantages and widespread presence of 3D-printing technology in surgical treatments, 3D-printed porous structure prostheses have been applied in a wide range of the treatments of bone tumor. In this research, we aimed to assess the application values of the 3D-printed custom prostheses with ultra-short stems for restoring bone defects and maintaining arthrosis in malignant bone tumors of lower extremities in children.Methods: Seven cases of pediatric patients were included in this study. In all cases, the prostheses were porous titanium alloy with ultra-short stems. MSTS 93 (Musculoskeletal Tumor Society) scores were recorded for the functional recovery of the limbs. VAS (Visual analogue scale) scores were utilized to assess the degree of painfulness for the patients. X-ray and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) were applied to evaluate the bone integration, prostheses aseptic loosening, prostheses fracture, wound healing, and tumor recurrence during follow-up.Results: During follow-up, none of the patients developed any postoperative complications, including prostheses aseptic loosening, prostheses fracture, or tumor recurrence. Radiological examinations during the follow-up showed that prostheses implanted into the residual bone were stably fitted and bone defects were effectively reconstructed. The MSTS 93 scores were 24.9 ± 2.9 (20–28). VAS scores were decreased to 5.8 ± 1.2 (4.0–7.0). No statistically significant differences in leg length discrepancy were observed at the time of the last follow-up.Conclusion: 3D-printing technology can be effectively applied throughout the entire surgical treatment procedures of malignant bone tumors, offering stable foundations for the initial stability of 3D-printed prostheses with ultra-short stems through preoperative design, intraoperative precision operation, and personalized prosthesis matching. With meticulous postoperative follow-up, close monitoring of postoperative complications was ensured. These favorable outcomes indicate that the utilization of 3D-printed custom prostheses with ultra-short stems is a viable alternative for reconstructing bone defects. However, further investigation is warranted to determine the long-term effectiveness of the 3D-printing technique.

Background: Resection and reconstruction of malignant bone tumors at the proximal femur in adolescent patients has remained a clinical challenge. Considering the growth and development requirements of adolescents, there is no unified standard for the reconstruction of bone defects at the proximal femur. Here, we report a case of 3D-printed titanium alloy customized prosthesis for the construction of proximal femoral bone defects in an adolescent patient with Ewing’s sarcoma of the proximal femur.Case presentation: A 7-year-old female patient presented to a local hospital with left hip pain, and was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma on the proximal left femur. The patient received two courses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy before surgery according to the standard protocol. Considering growth and development problems associated with adolescents, we adopted a customized 3D-printed prosthesis of proximal femur for preservation of the femoral head and part of the femoral neck in the affected limb. Clinical outcomes, recorded after 12 months of follow-up, revealed excellent functional recovery and satisfactory functional scores of the affected limb, with no immediate complications.Conclusion: 3D-printed prosthesis is a feasible method for preserving femoral head and reconstruction of bone defects in adolescents’ proximal femur.

Accumulated halide defects on the buried interfaces of halide perovskite layers have exacerbated undesirable nonradiative recombination in the n–i–p perovskite photovoltaics, but are challenging to be passivated—the commonly used passivation molecules at buried interfaces of perovskite layers would be inevitably eroded in the solution processes of perovskite deposition. Regarding the solvent incompatibility, herein, the ZnO–EA/SnO2–Cl electron transfer layers (ETLs) terminated with functional sites (i.e., ethanolamine (EA) ligands on ZnO and Cl− ions on SnO2) to spontaneously heal the buried interfaces of perovskite layers are customized. The specialties of ZnO–EA/SnO2–Cl for defect passivation are revealed: 1) formation of ZnO–EA–Pb2+ coherent interlayers at the EA‐terminated ZnO‐perovskite interfaces effectively offsets the I vacancy defects of perovskites; and 2) spontaneous halide exchange between Cl−‐terminated SnO2 and unstable I−‐terminated perovskites enables the formation of FA2Sn(ICl)6‐like coherent interlayers. Thus, the customized termination of ETLs’ surface reduces the halide‐defect‐triggered nonradiative recombination at the buried surfaces of perovskite, enabling the fabricated n–i–p planar modules (6 × 6 cm2) with power conversion efficiencies approaching 18% and elevated stability. These findings provide desirable guidelines for interfacial carrier transport between perovskites and ETLs.

The RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway plays an essential role in the transposon silencing mechanism; the DDR complex, consisting of DRD1, DMS3, and RDM1, is an essential component of the RdDM pathway. ONSEN, identified in Arabidopsis, is a retrotransposon activated by heat stress at 37°C; however, studies on the regulation of ONSEN are limited. In this study, we analyzed the regulation of ONSEN activity by the DDR complex in Arabidopsis. We elucidated that loss of any component of the DDR complex increased ONSEN transcript levels. Transgenerational transposition of ONSEN was observed in the DDR-complex mutants treated with heat stress for 48 h. Furthermore, the DDR complex components DRD1, DMS3, and RDM1 played independent roles in suppressing ONSEN transcription and transposition. Moreover, we found that the duration of heat stress affects ONSEN activity. Therefore, the results of this study provide new insights into the retrotransposon regulatory mechanisms of the DDR complex in the RdDM pathway.

Abstract Australia experienced record‐breaking wildfires during 2019–2020, which emitted large amounts of carbonaceous aerosols (CAs) to the atmosphere. In this study, we explored the atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamic mechanism of the long‐range transport of CAs during November 2019–February 2020. The results indicate that the emitted CAs had a ternary advective spreading pattern across the Pacific Ocean in the Southern Hemisphere (SH), influenced mainly by the westerlies and anticyclonic systems. Upward vertical motion over the convergence zone and heat released from smoke pyro‐cumulonimbus clouds and strong light absorption of CAs provided strong vertical lift as the predominant injection pathway of the CAs into the stratosphere in the central Pacific Ocean in the SH. The abundant tropospheric CAs induced atmospheric heating (and potentially surface cooling), with increasing air temperature and decreasing of surface temperature. The anomalous thermal structure led to changes in atmospheric circulation, which weakened the upward vertical motion.

This study evaluated the association between the microRNA (miRNA) gene polymorphisms and the susceptibility to soft tissue sarcomas (STSs). In this case–control study, DNA was extracted from leukocytes in peripheral blood, which was collected from 169 STSs patients and 170 healthy controls. Three SNPs for miR-210, five SNPs for miR-206, two SNPs for miR-485, two SNPs for miR-34b, two SNPs for miR-671, and three SNPs for miR-381 were investigated and genotyped using a Sequenom Mass ARRAY matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry platform. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between miRNA gene polymorphisms and the susceptibility to STSs. The results showed that miR-671 rs1870238 GC + CC (OR = 1.963, 95% CI = 1.258–3.064, P = 0.003) and miR-671 rs2446065 CG + GG (OR =1.838, 95% CI = 1.178–2.868, P = 0.007) may be genetic risk factors for STSs after adjustment for age and smoking. Therefore, this study suggests that individuals carrying the GC + CC genotype for miR-671 rs1870238 or the CG + GG genotype for miR-671 rs2446065 are susceptible to STSs.

Transposable elements are present in a wide variety of organisms; however, our understanding of the diversity of mechanisms involved in their activation is incomplete. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptional activation of the ONSEN retrotransposon, which is activated by high-temperature stress in Arabidopsis thaliana. We found that its transcription is significantly higher in the Japanese ecotype Kyoto. Considering that transposons are epigenetically regulated, DNA methylation levels were analyzed, revealing that CHH methylation was reduced in Kyoto compared to the standard ecotype, Col-0. A mutation was also detected in the Kyoto CMT2 gene, encoding a CHH methyltransferase, suggesting that it may be responsible for increased expression of ONSEN. CHH methylation is controlled by histone modifications through a self-reinforcing loop between DNA methyltransferase and histone methyltransferase. Analysis of these modifications revealed that the level of H3K9me2, a repressive histone marker for gene expression, was lower in Kyoto than in Col-0. The level of another repressive histone marker, H3K27me1, was decreased in Kyoto; however, it was not impacted in a Col-0 cmt2 mutant. Therefore, in addition to the CMT2 mutation, other factors may reduce repressive histone modifications in Kyoto.

BackgroundExosomes play an important role in cell-cell communication by transferring genetic materials such as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) between cancer cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Recent studies revealed that lncRNA ELFN1-AS1 could function as an oncogene in many human cancers. However, the role of extracellular lncRNA ELFN1-AS1 in cell-to-cell communication of osteosarcoma (OS) has not been fully investigated.MethodsFunctional studies, including CCK-8, EdU staining and transwell assay were performed to investigate the role of ELFN1-AS1 in the progression of OS. 143B via xenograft mouse model was established to assess the role of ELFN1-AS1 in vivo. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) assay were used to verify the existence of exosomal ELFN1-AS1.ResultsThe level of ELFN1-AS1 was markedly upregulated in patients with advanced OS and in OS cells. In addition, overexpression of ELFN1-AS1 significantly promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of OS cells, while knockdown of ELFN1-AS1 exhibited the opposite effects. Meanwhile, ELFN1-AS1 could be transferred from OS cells to macrophages via exosomes. Exosomal ELFN1-AS1 from 143B cells was able to promote macrophage M2 polarization, and M2 macrophage in return facilitated OS progression. Mechanistically, overexpression of ELFN1-AS1 upregulated CREB1 level via sponging miR-138-5p and miR-1291 in macrophage via.ConclusionOS cell-derived exosomal ELFN1-AS1 was able to induce macrophage M2 polarization via sponging miR-138-5p and miR-1291, and M2 macrophage notably facilitated the progression of OS. These data suggested that ELFN1-AS1 might serve as a potential therapeutic target for osteosarcoma.

Objective: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a highly malignant, aggressive, and pleomorphic subtype of soft tissue sarcoma in adults. However, UPS is difficult to be diagnosed due to the lack of specific morphological and immunophenotypic features. Here, we aimed to identify new biomarkers for the diagnosis of UPS.Methods: The mRNA and protein expression of neurofibromin 1 (NF1) in 68 pairs of UPS and adjacent normal tissues were detected by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, and the correlation between the NF1 protein expression and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed. Then, differentially expressed microRNAs (DE miRNAs) were identified between the UPS tumor tissue and matched adjacent normal tissue using Hisep sequencing, Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). The DE miRNAs of the regulating NF1 gene were also identified using the TargetScan and miRanda databases and validated by qRT-PCR.Results: Compared with the adjacent normal tissue, both mRNA and protein expressions of NF1 in the UPS tumor tissue were significantly decreased, and the positive rate of NF1 protein was associated with the tumor size, metastasis, and recurrence. A total of 125 known DE miRNAs were identified from the screened miRNAs based on | log2(Fold Change) ≥5 and p-value < 0.05 (A total of 82 upregulated and 43 downregulated DE miRNAs in the UPS tissue). Target genes regulated by the DE miRNAs were enriched in pathways of metabolisms, RNA degradation, PI3K-Akt, and Rap1 pathway. In total, 11 miRNAs which were predicted to regulate the NF1 gene were screened. After verification, the relative expressions of hsa-miR-199a-3p and hsa-miR-34a-5p were increased and decreased in the UPS tumor tissue compared with those in the adjacent normal tissue, respectively.Conclusion: NF1 and NF1-related microRNAs including hsa-miR-199a-3p and hsa-miR-34a-5p may be novel biomarkers in the diagnosis of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS).

In this study, a typical tea polyphenol epicatechin (EC) was investigated for its impact on the oxidative stability of whey protein isolate (WPI) in a fish oil-fortified emulsion. The oil-in-water emulsion system consisted of fish oil (1%, w/w), WPI (6 mg/mL), and EC (0.1, 1, and 2 mM), and the oxidation reaction was catalyzed by Fenton’s reagent at 25 °C for 24 h. The results showed EC exhibited a dose-dependent activity in the reduction of lipid oxidation (TBARS) and protein carbonylation. A Western blot analysis demonstrated that protein lipoxidation was inhibited by EC via interrupting the covalent binding of lipid secondary oxidation products, MDA, onto proteins. In addition, protein lipoxidation induced a loss of tryptophan fluorescence, and protein hydrolysis was partially recovered by EC. The findings of this study provide an in-depth understanding of the performance of phenolic antioxidants in relieving lipid oxidation and subsequent protein lipoxidation in oil-containing dairy products.

Light-absorbing particles (LAPs) deposited on snow can significantly reduce surface albedo and contribute to positive radiative forcing. This study firstly estimated and attributed the spatio-temporal variability in the radiative forcing (RF) of LAPs in snow over the northern hemisphere during the snow-covered period 2003–2018 by employing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, coupled with snow and atmospheric radiative transfer modelling. In general, the RF for the northern hemisphere shows a large spatial variability over the whole snow-covered areas and periods, with the highest value (12.7 W m−2) in northeastern China (NEC) and the lowest (1.9 W m−2) in Greenland (GRL). The concentration of LAPs in snow is the dominant contributor to spatial variability in RF in spring (~73%) while the joint spatial contributions of snow water equivalent (SWE) and solar irradiance (SI) are the most important (>50%) in winter. The average northern hemisphere RF gradually increases from 2.1 W m−2 in December to 4.1 W m−2 in May and the high-value area shifts gradually northwards from mid-altitude to high-latitude over the same period, which is primarily due to the seasonal variability of SI (~58%). More interestingly, our data reveal a significant decrease in RF over high-latitude Eurasia (HEUA) of −0.04 W m−2 a−1 and northeastern China (NEC) of −0.14 W m−2 a−1 from 2003 to 2018. By employing a sensitivity test, we find the concurrent decline in the concentration of LAPs in snow accounted for the primary responsibility for the decrease in RF over these two areas, which is further confirmed by in situ observations.

Black carbon in snow (BCS) has a significant impact on global climate and is an important component of Earth system modeling. Here, we provide a comprehensive evaluation of BCS simulations in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and its radiative forcing on a global scale. Overall, the multi-model mean generally captures the characteristics of BCS spatial patterns, with maximum concentrations in East Asia and the Tibetan Plateau (~120 ng·g−1), and the lowest in Antarctica (~0.05 ng·g−1). The BCS concentrations in all CMIP6 multi-model mean and individual models generally exhibit a temporally increasing trend globally, with particularly large increases after the 1940s. In terms of seasonal cycles, individual models are generally consistent in most regions. Globally, BCS concentrations are highest around January and lowest in September. The albedo reduction in the Tibetan Plateau and East Asia simulated by the CMIP6 multi-model mean reached ~0.06 in 2014 and may influence climate more than expected.

In this work, we quantified goat milk powder adulteration by adding urea, melamine, and starch individually and simultaneously, with the utilization of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics. For single-adulterant samples, the successive projections algorithm (SPA) selected three, three, and four optimal wavelengths for urea, melamine, and starch, respectively. Models were built based on partial least squares regression (PLS) and the selected wavelengths, exhibiting good predictive ability with an Rp2 above 0.987 and an RMSEP below 0.403%. For multiple-adulterants samples, PLS2 and multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) were adopted to build the models to quantify the three adulterants simultaneously. The PLS2 results showed adequate precision and results better than those of MCR-ALS. Except for urea, MCR-ALS models presented good predictive results for milk, melamine, and starch concentrations. MCR-ALS allowed detection of adulteration with new and unknown substitutes as well as the development of models without the need for the usage of a large data set.

Abstract In this work, CoFe2O4 nanoparticles coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal technique. Morphological studies of the samples confirmed the formation of polycrystalline pure-phase PEG-CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with sizes of about 24 nm. Toxicity induced by CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was investigated, and biological assays were performed to check the toxicity effects of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Moreover, the healing effect of toxicity induced in living organisms was studied using curcumin and it was found that biochemical indexes detoxified and improved to reach its normal level after curcumin administration. Thus, PEG-coated CoFe2O4 synthesized through a hydrothermal method can be utilized in biomedical applications and curcumin, which is a natural chemical with no side effects, can be used for the treatment of toxicity induced by the nanoparticles in living organisms.

It is inevitable for the occurrence or built-ups of disturbing cations, especially Ca2+ or Mg2+ ions, in process water during the flotation of iron oxides by using starch as flocculants. In addition to alkali concentrations and temperature, water quality could have an essential role in changing the physicochemical properties of the starch solution and consequently disturbing its flocculation performance on particles. This study aims to identify the effects of magnesium ions on the gelatinization characteristics of starch and its flocculation properties on particles through a series of tests, such as flotation tests, settling tests, size analyses, zeta potentials, powder contact angle, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurement. All results show that magnesium ions at = 4 mmol/L have a positive role due to enlarging the sizes of the particle flocs and accelerating their settling rates. The occurrence of Mg2+ ions at higher concentrations during starch gelatinization only obtains a starch sol-gel with entangled configurations and preoccupied active sites, resulting in the slower settling rate of the particle flocs and less hydrophilicity on mineral surfaces. It could be attributed to the cross-link interactions of magnesium-based precipitates with the acidic groups, especially carboxyl groups on the starch remnants. The suitable acid/base interactions between Mg(OH)2/MgCO3 compounds with these groups in the starch suspension could be beneficial for enhancing the flocculation of hematite as they could build bridges among the pieces and enlarge their sizes as a "load carrier" for aggregation with minerals. However, too much cross-linking could reentangle the remnants, block their adsorption sites on mineral surfaces, and eventually, weaken the flocculation capacity of starch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Taklamakan Desert (TD) is a major source of mineral dust emissions into the atmosphere. These dust particles have the ability to darken the surface of snow on the surrounding high mountains after deposition, significantly impacting the regional radiation balance. However, previous field measurements have been unable to capture the effects of severe dust storms accurately, and their representation on regional scales has been inadequate. In this study, we propose a modified remote-sensing approach that combines data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite and simulations from the Snow, Ice, and Aerosol Radiative (SNICAR) model. This approach allows us to detect and analyze the substantial snow darkening resulting from dust storm deposition. We focus on three typical dust events originating from the Taklamakan Desert and observe significant snow darkening over an area of >2100, >600, and >630 km2 in the Tien Shan, Kunlun, and Qilian Mountains, respectively. Our findings reveal that the impact of dust storms extends beyond the local high mountains, reaching mountains located approximately 1000 km away from the source. Furthermore, we observe that dust storms not only darken the snowpack during the spring but also in the summer and autumn seasons, leading to increased absorption of solar radiation. Specifically, the snow albedo reduction (radiative forcing) triggered by severe dust depositions is up to 0.028-0.079 (11-31.5 W m-2), 0.088-0.136 (31-49 W m-2), and 0.092-0.153 (22-38 W m-2) across the Tien Shan, Kunlun, and Qilian Mountains, respectively. This further contributes to the aging of the snow, as evidenced by the growth of snow grain size. Comparatively, the impact of persistent but relatively slow dust deposition over several months during non-event periods is significantly lower than that of individual dust event. This highlights the necessity of giving more attention to the influence of extreme events on the regional radiation balance. Through this study, we gain a deeper understanding of how a single dust event can affect the extensive snowpack and demonstrates the potential of employing satellite remote38 sensing to monitor large-scale snow darkening. Although water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in the cryosphere can significantly influence the global carbon cycle and radiation budget, WSOC in the snowpack has received little scientific attention to date. This study reports the fluorescence characteristics, absorption properties, and radiative effects of WSOC based on 34 snow samples collected from sites in northeastern China. Sampling sites were divided into five groups, comprising southeastern Inner Mongolia (SEIM), northeastern Inner Mongolia (NEIM), the south of northeastern China (SNC), the north of northeastern China (NNC), and the Changbai Mountain area (CBM). Together, these groups represent a significant degree of regional WSOC variability, with concentrations ranging from 0.50 ± 0.19 to 5.70 ± 3.68 μg g−1 (mean = 3.59 ± 3.19 μg g−1). We then identified the three principal fluorescent components of WSOC as (1) a high‑oxygen humic-like component (HULIS-1) of terrestrial origin, (2) a low‑oxygen humic-like component (HULIS-2) of mixed origin, (3) and a protein-like component (PRLIS) derived from autochthonous microbial activity. In SEIM, a region dominated by desert and exposed soils, the WSOC content exhibits the highest humification index (HIX) but the lowest fluorescence (FI) and biological (BIX) indices; the fluorescence signal is mainly attributed to HULIS-1, and thus implicates soil as the primary source. By contrast, the HIX (FI and BIX) value was the lowest (highest) and PRLIS most intense in the remote grasslands and forested areas of NEIM, suggesting a primarily biological source. For SNC and NNC, both of which are characterized by intensive agriculture and industrial activity, the fluorescence signal is dominated by HULIS-2 and the HIX, FI, and BIX values are all moderate, indicating mixed origins for WSOC (anthropogenic activity, microbial activity, and soil). We also observed that, throughout northeastern China, the light absorption of WSOC is dominated by HULIS-1, followed by HULIS-2 and PRLIS. The contribution of WSOC to albedo reduction (average concentration 3.6 μg g−1) in the ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) band is approximately half that of black carbon (BC: average concentration 0.6 μg g−1); radiative forcing is 3.8 (0.8) W m−2 in old (fresh) snow, equating to 19 % (17 %) of the radiative forcing of BC. Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in the cryosphere has important impact on the biogeochemistry cycling and snow/ice surface energy balance through changes in the surface albedo. This work reports on chemical characterization of WSOC in 28 representative snowpack samples collected across regional area of northern Xinjiang, northwestern China. We employed multi-modal analytical chemistry techniques to investigate both bulk and molecular-level composition of WSOC and its optical properties, informing the follow-up radiative forcing (푅퐹) modeling estimates. Based on the geographic differences and proximity of emission sources, the snowpack collection sites were grouped as urban/industrial (U), rural/remote (R), and soil-influenced (S) sites, for which average WSOC total mass loadings were measured as 1968±953 ng g-1 (U), 885±328 ng g-1 (R), and 2082±1438 ng g-1 (S), respectively. The S sites showed the higher mass absorption coefficients at 365 nm (푀퐴퐶365) of 0.94±0.31 m² g-1 compared to those of U and R sites (0.39±0.11 m² g-1 and 0.38±0.12 m² g-1, respectively). Bulk composition of WSOC in the snowpack samples and its basic source apportionment was inferred from the Excitation-Emission Matrices and the Parallel Factor analysis featuring relative contributions of two humic-like (HULIS-1 and HULIS-2) and one protein-like (PRLIS) components with ratios specific to each of the S, U, and R sites. Additionally, a sample from site 120 showed unique pollutant concentrations and spectroscopic features remarkably different from all other U, R, and S samples. Molecular-level characterization of WSOC using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) provided further insights into chemical differences among four types of samples (U, R, S, and 120). Specifically, much more reduced S-containing species with high degree of unsaturation and aromaticity were uniquely identified in U samples, suggesting an anthropogenic source. Aliphatic/proteins like species showed highest contribution in R samples, indicating their biogenic origin. The WSOC components from S samples showed high oxygenation and saturation levels. A few of unique CHON and CHONS compounds with high molecular weight were detected in the 120 sample, which might be anthraquinone derivatives from plant debris. Modeling of the WSOC- induced 푅퐹 values showed warming effects of 0.04 to 0.59 W m-2 among different groups of sites, which contribute up to 16% of that caused by BC, demonstrating the important influences of WSOC on the snow energy budget. Biomass lignin, as a significant renewable resource, is one of the most abundant natural polymers in the world. Here, we report a novel silicon-based material, in which lignin-derived functional conformal network crosslinks the silicon nanoparticles via self-assembly. This newly-developed material could greatly solve the problems of large volume change during lithiation/delithiation process and the formation of unstable solid electrolyte interphase layers on the silicon surface. With this anode, the battery demonstrates a high capacity of ∼3000 mA h g−1, a highly stable cycling retention (∼89% after 100 cycles at 300 mA g−1) and an excellent rate capability (∼800 mA h g−1 at 9 A g−1). Moreover, the feasibility of full lithium-ion batteries with the novel silicon-based material would provide wide range of applications in the field of flexible energy storage systems for wearable electronic devices.
