This article proposes a dual-negative-objective coordinated control strategy for brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) based wind power generation system under unbalanced grid voltage. To alleviate the mechanical stress and impaction on rotating shaft, the negative control objective (NCO) of machine side converter (MSC) is set to suppress the ripple of electromagnetic torque. While the NCO of grid side converter (GSC) is selected to suppress the oscillation of total output active power or the unbalanced degree of total output current for BDFIG generation system. In comparison with traditional single converter control scheme of the MSC or GSC, dual NCOs can be satisfied at the same time due to the enlarged freedom degree in the proposed improved coordinated control system for back-to-back converters. The effectiveness of proposed control strategy is validated by simulation and experimental results on a dual-cage-rotor BDFIG (DCR-BDFIG) prototype.

Abstract Introduction In recent years, insulin eye drops have attracted increasing attention from researchers and ophthalmologists. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and possible mechanism of action of insulin eye drops in diabetic mice with corneal wounds. Methods A type 1 diabetes model was induced, and a corneal epithelial injury model of 2.5 mm was established. We used corneal fluorescein staining, hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) staining and the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer to examine the process of wound healing. Subsequently, the expression levels of Ki-67, IL-1β, β3-tubulin and neuropeptides, including substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), were examined at 72 h after corneal injury. Results Fluorescein staining demonstrated an acceleration of the recovery of corneal epithelial injury in diabetic mice compared with the saline treatment, which was further evidenced by the overexpression of Ki-67. Moreover, 72 h of insulin application attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokines and neutrophil infiltration. Remarkably, the results demonstrated that topical insulin treatment enhanced the density of corneal epithelial nerves, as well as neuropeptide SP and CGRP release, in the healing cornea via immunofluorescence staining. Conclusions Our results indicated that insulin eye drops may accelerate corneal wound healing and decrease inflammatory responses in diabetic mice by promoting nerve regeneration and increasing levels of neuropeptides SP and CGRP.

Abstract Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive degenerative disease that usually occurs bilaterally and is characterized by corneal thinning and apical protrusion of the cornea. Oxidative stress is an indicator of the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and KC keratocytes exhibit increased ROS production compared with that of normal keratocytes. Therefore, oxidative stress in KC keratocytes may play a major role in the development and progression of KC. Here, we investigated the protective effect of sulforaphane (SF) antioxidants using a hydrogel-simulated model of the cell mechanical microenvironment of KC. The stiffness of the KC matrix microenvironment in vitro was 16.70 kPa and the stiffness of the normal matrix microenvironment was 34.88 kPa. Human keratocytes (HKs) were cultured for 24 h before observation or drug treatment with H2O2 in the presence or absence of SF. The levels of oxidative stress, nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2) and antioxidant response element (ARE) were detected. The high-stress state of HKs in the mechanical microenvironment of KC cells compensates for the activation of the Nrf-2/ARE signaling pathway. H2O2 leads to increased oxidative stress and decreased levels of antioxidant proteins in KC. In summary, SF can reduce endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress and increase the antioxidant capacity of cells.

Abstract Background Homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors are plant-specific and play important roles in plant defense against environmental stresses. Identification and functional studies have been carried out in model plants such as rice, Arabidopsis thaliana, and poplar, but comprehensive analysis on the HD-Zip family of Salix suchowensis have not been reported. Results A total of 55 HD-Zip genes were identified in the willow genome, unevenly distributed on 18 chromosomes except for chromosome 19. And segmental duplication events containing SsHD-Zip were detected on all chromosomes except chromosomes 13 and 19. The SsHD-Zip were classified into 4 subfamilies subfamilies (I-IV) according to the evolutionary analysis, and members of each subfamily shared similar domain structure and gene structure. The combination of GO annotation and promoter analysis showed that SsHD-Zip genes responded to multiple abiotic stresses. Furthermore, the results of qPCR analysis showed that the SsHD-Zip I gene exhibited different degrees of expression under salt stress, PEG treatment and heat treatment. Moreover, there was a synergistic effect between SsHD-Zip I genes under stress conditions based on coregulatory networks analysis. Conclusions In this study, HD-Zip transcription factors were systematically identified and analyzed at the whole genome level. These results preliminarily clarified the structural characteristics and related functions of willow HD-Zip family members, and it was found that SsHox34, SsHox36 and SsHox51 genes were significantly involved in the response to various stresses. Together, these findings laid the foundation for further research on the resistance functions of willow HD-Zip genes.

Background: Altered brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations have been detected in the central nervous system tissues and peripheral blood. These alterations are associated with a series of neurological disorders. Objective: To investigate the potential causal relationships between genetically determined plasma BDNF levels and various neurological diseases using a two-sample Mendelian randomisation study. Methods: We selected single nucleotide polymorphisms strongly related to plasma BDNF levels as instrumental variables. Within the Mendelian randomisation framework, we used summary-level statistics for exposure (plasma BDNF levels) and outcomes (neurological disorders). Results: We observed suggestive evidence of a relation between higher plasma BDNF levels and less risk of nontraumatic intracranial haemorrhage (nITH) (odds ratio [OR] = 0.861, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.774–0.958, P = 0.006, PFDR = 0.078), epilepsy (OR = 0.927, 95 % CI: 0.880–0.976, P = 0.004, PFDR = 0.078), focal epilepsy (OR = 0.928, 95 % CI: 0.874–0.986, P = 0.016, PFDR = 0.139), and non-lesional focal epilepsy (OR = 0.981, 95 % CI: 0.964–0.999, P = 0.041, PFDR = 0.267). Abstract Background Agaricus bisporus (A. bisporus) is highly valued for its nutritional benefits and delicious taste, making it one of the most widely cultivated, highest yielding, and most consumed edible mushrooms worldwide. The yield and quality of A. bisporus were affected by its culture medium and environment. Among the culture base, the precise impact of calcium on A. bisporus cultivation and the dynamic changes in calcium concentration and chemical environment during the cultivation process remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the changes in calcium content and forms during the growth of A. bisporus and their implications for mushroom growth and nutrition. Results Through the analysis of samples collected during the composting phase, mycelial development phase, and A. bisporus harvesting phase, the role of calcium in the growth process of button mushrooms is revealed. During the composting phase, the calcium content remains relatively stable, suggesting a consistent calcium source in the compost. The fermentation process shows a significant decrease in carbon content and an increase in oxygen content, indicating the degradation and oxidation of organic matter. In the mycelial development phase, both the cover soil and compost experience a decrease in calcium content, with a more pronounced reduction observed in the covering soil, indicating its primary role as an energy source for enzymatic activity and metabolic processes of the mycelium. During the A. bisporus harvesting phase, the changes in calcium, carbon, and oxygen content become less prominent, indicating a stable state of fruiting bodies growth that no longer requires a significant supply of organic matter. Conclusions Analysis of calcium forms reveals the presence of different calcium compounds, likely influenced by soil calcium sources, microbial activities, and mushroom metabolic byproducts. Calcium plays a crucial regulatory role in the growth and quality of A. bisporus. This study provides valuable insights into the significance of calcium in A. bisporus growth and offers theoretical guidance for optimizing mushroom production and quality improvement. Background: Deep brain stimulation of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT-DBS) is an effective treatment for refractory epilepsy; however, seizure outcome varies among individuals. Identifying a reliable noninvasive biomarker to predict good responders would be helpful. Objectives: To test whether the functional connectivity between the ANT-DBS sites and the seizure foci correlates with effective seizure control in refractory epilepsy. Methods: We performed a proof-of-concept pilot study of patients with focal refractory epilepsy receiving ANT-DBS. Using normative human connectome data derived from 1000 healthy participants, we investigated whether intrinsic functional connectivity between the seizure foci and the DBS site was associated with seizure outcome. We repeated this analysis controlling for the extent of seizure foci, distance between the seizure foci and DBS site, and using functional connectivity of the ANT instead of the DBS site to test the contribution of variance in DBS sites. Results: Eighteen patients with two or more seizure foci were included. Greater functional connectivity between the seizure foci and the DBS site correlated with more favorable outcome. For jointed rock mass with anisotropy and discontinuity, the structure of the surrounding rock is constantly developing and changing during tunnel excavation. It is difficult to reasonably predict localized deformation of jointed rock mass by using the existing rock mechanics theory. In this paper, the failure characteristic of pre-holed jointed rock mass with three joint angles is experimentally investigated by adopting the digital image correlation and acoustic emission methods. To avoid the influence of measurement error on Digital Image Correlation (DIC) from discontinuous deformation, parametric studies and an optimized algorithm are also included in DIC tests. Results indicate that the perpendicular-jointed condition (0° joints) is the most dangerous situation because of its comparatively lower strength and brittle failure mode with a shift energy release. For rocks with different jointed angles, localized deformation emerges after the material enters the plasticity. Significant localization occurs after the failure with cracks surrounding the center hole and pre-existing joints.

Purpose To report a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between dry eye disease (DED) and dyslipidaemia.Methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were systematically searched from January 2000 to December 2021. We included observational studies to assess the correlation of DED with meibomian gland dysfunction and dyslipidaemia without any language restrictions. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the serious complications of diabetes mellitus, primarily arising from type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and can progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end stage renal disease (ESRD). The pathogenesis of DN involves various factors such as hemodynamic changes, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and lipid metabolism disorders. Increasing attention is being given to DN caused by oxidative stress in the mitochondrial pathway, prompting researchers to explore drugs that can regulate these target pathways. Chinese herbal medicine, known for its accessibility, rich historical usage, and remarkable efficacy, has shown promise in ameliorating renal injury caused by DN by modulating oxidative stress in the mitochondrial pathway. This review aims to provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of DN. Firstly, we outline the mechanisms by which mitochondrial dysfunction impairs DN, focusing on outlining the damage to mitochondria by oxidative stress. Subsequently, we describe the process by which formulas, herbs and monomeric compounds protect the kidney by ameliorating oxidative stress in the mitochondrial pathway. Finally, the rich variety of Chinese herbal medicine, combined with modern extraction techniques, has great potential, and as we gradually understand the pathogenesis of DN and research techniques are constantly updated, there will be more and more promising therapeutic targets and herbal drug candidates. This paper aims to provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of DN.

Abstract Background This study was performed to investigate the association between symptoms and signs in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods Data were obtained from 122 MGD patients who were recruited for intense pulsed light therapy from November 2017 to April 2018 and the severity of their symptoms and signs at baseline were observed and recorded. Spearman correlation analyses were performed to analyze the relationships between SPEED score and signs. Subjects were divided into different subgroups based on possible influencing factors, and the differences in symptoms and signs were compared between different subgroups. Then influencing factors were controlled by regression analysis to explore the relationship between symptoms and signs and the strong factors affecting symptoms and signs. Results Analysis of baseline data showed that SPEED scores were not correlated with TBUT, CFSS, MGYSS or any index of eyelid margin abnormality (p > 0.05). In addition, abnormalities of lid margins, including hyperemia, thickening, rounding, hyperkeratinization, and telangiectasia around orifices, were more likely to occur in older patients, menopausal patients, and patients living in northern China. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that there was still no correlation between symptoms and signs (p > 0.05) after adjusting for influencing factors. Further analysis suggested that each influencing factor has different effects on symptoms and signs, among which menopause affects the SPEED score (R = -4.112, p = 0.025), and age and region have significant effects on eyelid margin abnormalities. Conclusions In conclusion, the results demonstrated a poor correlation between symptoms and signs in MGD patients. Age, hormone, and a dry environment may influence the disease, which suggests that the severity of the disease needs to be comprehensively assessed.

Abstract Background The association between prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR) and long-term prognosis among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) without atrial fibrillation or anticoagulant therapy was still unclear. We analyzed the association of PT-INR levels and long-term mortality in a large cohort of CAD patients without atrial fibrillation or using of anticoagulant drugs. Methods We obtained data from 44,662 patients who were diagnosed with CAD and had follow-up information from January 2008 to December 2018. The patients were divided into 4 groups (Quartile 1: PT-INR ≤ 0.96; Quartile2: 0.96 1.06). The main endpoint was long-term all-cause death. Kaplan–Meier curve analysis and Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate the association between quartiles of PT-INR levels and long-term all-cause mortality. Results During a median follow-up of 5.25 years, 5613 (12.57%) patients died. We observed a non-linear shaped association between PT-INR levels and long-term all-cause mortality. IntroductionThe efficacy and safety of 3% diquafosol sodium eye drops in Chinese patients with dry eye in the real-world setting remains unclear.Methods3099 patients with dry eye symptoms were screened according to Asia Dry Eye Society latest recommendation. Among them, 3000 patients were enrolled for a phase IV study. We followed up with multiple clinical characteristics including corneal fluorescein staining, tear break up time, Schirmer’s tests, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and others. The follow ups were performed at baseline, 2 weeks and 4 weeks after treatment.ResultsBased on the results of corneal fluorescein staining and tear break up time, all age and gender subgroups exhibited obvious alleviation of the symptoms among the patients with dry eye, and the data in elderly group showed the most significant alleviation. All the adverse drug reactions (ADRs, 6.17%) were recorded, among which 6% local ocular ADRs were included. Meanwhile, mild ADRs (91.8%) accounted for the most. Most of the ADRs (89.75%) got a quick and full recovery, with an average time at 15.6 days. 1.37% of patients dropped out of the study due to ADRs.DiscussionThe use of 3% diquafosol sodium eye drop is effective and safe in the treatment of dry eye, with a low incidence of ADRs showing mild symptoms. Abstract. Background:. The combination of high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) with single-mode imaging methods has been proved useful in identifying epileptogenic zones, whereas few studies have examined HFOs combined with multimodal imaging methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of ripples, an HFO subtype with a frequency of 80 to 200 Hz is combined with multimodal imaging methods in predicting epilepsy surgery outcome. Methods:. HFOs were analyzed in 21 consecutive medically refractory epilepsy patients who underwent epilepsy surgery. All patients underwent positron emission tomography (PET) and deep electrode implantation for stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG); 11 patients underwent magnetoencephalography (MEG). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy in predicting surgical outcome were calculated for ripples combined with PET, MEG, both PET and MEG, and PET combined with MEG. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were conducted in each group to estimate prognostic value. Results:. The study included 13 men and 8 women. Accuracy for ripples, PET, and MEG alone in predicting surgical outcome was 42.9%, 42.9%, and 81.8%, respectively. Accuracy for ripples combined with PET and MEG was the highest. Background: Abnormal glucose metabolism is present in most patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Inflammation is considered to be a common risk factor for CAD and diabetes. Fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR), a novel inflammation biomarker, has been proposed as a predictor for cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between the level of FAR and long-term mortality including all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality, remains unknown in CAD patients, especially those with prediabetes. Methods: We enrolled 66,761 CAD patients from 2007 to 2020 from a multi-center registry cohort study. The primary outcomes were the all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality. FAR was calculated using the following formula: Fibrinogen (g/L)/Albumin (g/L). Patients were divided into three groups by FAR tertile (low FAR (FAR-L), median FAR (FAR-M), high FAR (FAR-H)), and further categorized into 9 groups according to FAR and glucose metabolism status (normal glucose regulation (NGR), prediabetes mellitus (PreDM), diabetes mellitus (DM)). Cox regression models and competing risk models were used to examine the relationships between FAR and clinical outcomes. Results: 66,761 patients (63.1 ± 11.0 years, 75.3% male) were enrolled. During the follow-up, 10,534 patients died, including 4991 cardiovascular deaths and 1092 cancer deaths. After adjusting for confounders, higher FAR was associated with increased risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in CAD patients with NGR, PreDM and DM. The risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was highest in FAR-H with DM (HR (95% CI) = 1.71 (1.58–1.86), 2.11 (1.86–2.38), respectively; p < 0.001). FAR-H with PreDM was significantly associated with the highest risk of cancer mortality (HR (95% CI) = 2.27 (1.70–3.02), p < 0.001). Adding FAR to the original model significantly improved the prediction of long-term mortality. Conclusions: Increased FAR was significantly associated with higher risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in CAD patients with NGR, PreDM and DM. Abnormal glucose metabolism augments the relationship between FAR and mortality. Clinical Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05050877.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex group of metabolic disorders syndrome with hypertension, hyperuricemia and disorders of glucose or lipid metabolism. As an important organ involved in metabolism, the kidney is inevitably attacked by various metabolic disorders, leading to abnormalities in kidney structure and function. Recently, an increasing number of studies have shown that mitochondrial dysfunction is actively involved in the development of metabolic-associated kidney diseases. Mitochondrial dysfunction can be used as a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of metabolic-associated kidney diseases. Many natural products have been widely used to improve the treatment of metabolic-associated kidney diseases by inhibiting mitochondrial dysfunction. In this paper, by searching several authoritative databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, and Springer Link. We summarize the Natural Products Protect Against Metabolic-Associated Kidney Diseases by Regulating Mitochondrial Dysfunction. In this review, we sought to provide an overview of the mechanisms by which mitochondrial dysfunction impaired metabolic-associated kidney diseases, with particular attention to the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetic nephropathy, gouty nephropathy, hypertensive kidney disease, and obesity-related nephropathy, and then the protective role of natural products in the kidney through inhibition of mitochondrial disorders, thus providing a systematic understanding of the targets of mitochondrial dysfunction in metabolic-associated kidney diseases, and finally a review of promising therapeutic targets and herbal candidates for metabolic-associated kidney diseases through inhibition of mitochondrial dysfunction.

ObjectiveAltered expression patterns of Na+-K+-2Cl– (NKCC1) and K+-Cl– (KCC2) co-transporters have been implicated in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. Here, we assessed the effects of imbalanced NKCC1 and KCC2 on γ-aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) neurotransmission in certain brain regions involved in human focal cortical dysplasia (FCD).Materials and methodsWe sought to map a micro-macro neuronal network to better understand the epileptogenesis mechanism. In patients with FCD, we resected cortical tissue from the seizure the onset zone (SOZ) and the non-seizure onset zone (non-SOZ) inside the epileptogenic zone (EZ). Additionally, we resected non-epileptic neocortical tissue from the patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) as control. All of tissues were analyzed using perforated patch recordings. NKCC1 and KCC2 co-transporters expression and distribution were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and western blotting.ResultsResults revealed that depolarized GABAergic signals were observed in pyramidal neurons in the SOZ and non-SOZ groups compared with the control group. The total number of pyramidal neurons showing GABAergic spontaneous postsynaptic currents was 11/14, 7/17, and 0/12 in the SOZ, non-SOZ, and control groups, respectively. The depolarizing GABAergic response was significantly dampened by the specific NKCC1 inhibitor bumetanide (BUM). Patients with FCD exhibited higher expression and internalized distribution of KCC2, particularly in the SOZ group.ConclusionOur results provide evidence of a potential neurocircuit underpinning SOZ epileptogenesis and non-SOZ seizure susceptibility. Imbalanced function of NKCC1 and KCC2 may affect chloride ion homeostasis in neurons and alter GABAergic inhibitory action, thereby contributing to epileptogenesis in FCDs. Maintaining chloride ion homeostasis in the neurons may represent a new avenue for the development of novel anti-seizure medications (ASMs).

Abstract Background Contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is a common complication with poor prognosis after coronary angiography (CAG). With the prevention methods widely being implemented, the temporal trends of incidence and mortality of CA-AKI are still unknown over the last five years. The study aims to determine the incidence and prognosis of CA-AKI in China. Methods This retrospective cohort study was based on the registry at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital in China (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04407936). We analyzed data from hospitalization patients who underwent CAG and with preoperative and postoperative serum creatinine (Scr) values from January 2013 to December 2017. Results 11,943 patients were included in the study, in which the mean age was 63.01 ± 10.79 years and 8,469 (71.1 %) were male. The overall incidence of CA-AKI was 11.2 %. PurposeTo investigate the indirect effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) on morphological and pathological changes of the meibomian glands (MGs) in apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE–/–) mice and explore the underlying mechanisms.MethodsApoE–/– mice were treated with or without IPL three times below the lower eyelids and MGs were not directly exposed to irradiation. The eyelids and ocular surface were observed under a stereoscope. The morphology of MGs was examined by photographing and hematoxylin and eosin staining. Lipid droplets in MGs were examined by Oil Red O staining. The ultrastructure of meibocytes and mitochondria was observed under transmission electron microscopy. The relative gene and protein expression in MGs of upper eyelids was determined by immunostaining, Western blot, and qRT–PCR.ResultsThree IPL treatments decreased the toothpaste-like plugging of orifices and thickening and irregularity of the upper and lower eyelid margins in ApoE–/– mice. The morphology of some MGs improved after IPL treatments, accompanied by increased proliferation of acinar basal cells and decreased ductal keratinization. Furthermore, the accumulation of hyperchromatic lipid droplets in the acini increased, and the lipid droplets distributed in the cells around the acini were round and small. Compared with untreated ApoE–/– mice, oxidative stress and apoptosis were downregulated by IPL treatment, accompanied by the improvements in mitochondrial structure. Background: Left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) is a common parameter in echocardiography. Increased LVEDD is associated with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. However, the association between LVEDD and all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is uncertain. Methods: This study enrolled 33,147 patients with CAD who had undergone transthoracic echocardiography between January 2007 and December 2018 from the Cardiorenal Improvement study (NCT04407936). The patients were stratified into four groups based on the quartile of LVEDD (Quartile 1: LVEDD ≤43 mm, Quartile 2: 43 mm < LVEDD ≤46 mm, Quartile 3: 46 mm < LVEDD ≤51 mm, Quartile 4: LVEDD >51 mm) and were categorized into two groups (Quartile 1–3 versus Quartile 4). Survival curves were generated with the Kaplan-Meier analysis, and the differences between groups were assessed by log-rank test. Restricted cubic splines and cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate the association with LVEDD and all-cause mortality. Results: A total of 33,147 patients (average age: 63.0 ± 10.6 years; 24.0% female) were included in the final analysis. In the average follow-up period of 5.2 years, a total of 4288 patients died. The mortality of the larger LVEDD group (Quartile 4) was significantly higher than the lower LVEDD groups (Quartile 1–3) (18.05% vs 11.15%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounding factors, patients with the larger LVEDD (Quartile 4) had a 1.19-fold risk for all-cause mortality (95% CI: 1.09–1.30) compared with the lower quartile (Quartile 1–3). Conclusions: Enlarged LVEDD is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in patients with CAD. LVEDD measurements may be helpful for risk stratification and providing therapeutic targets for the management of CAD patients.

Objectives: Based on data for a large population of patients from a single center accumulated over 22 years, the present study aimed to reveal an overall profile of movement disorders (MDs) in terms of their demographic features and surgical treatment. Methods: This study was conducted on 21,005 outpatients (2008–2019) and 5,126 inpatients (1998–2019) with MDs who underwent radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or deep-brain stimulation (DBS). Patients were categorized into those with Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), dystonia, tics, or involuntary movements (IMs). The clinical data of these patients were analyzed retrospectively. Results: PD accounted for the largest proportion (75.4%) among surgically treated MD patients, and was associated with the highest surgical rate (18.8%), followed by ET (proportion: 12.1%, surgical rate: 10.4%) and dystonia (proportion: 5.7%, surgical rate: 5.7%). Precise regulation of biomimetic mineralization for highly ordered superstructures is one of the perpetual concerns in biomaterial synthesis and crystal engineering. Herein, we propose a ultra-homoporous interfacial crystallizer (UHIC) as a novel interfacial microdevice, which has realized high selective synthesis of CaCO3 superstructures during Gas–Liquid reactive crystallization process. This UHIC with ultra-uniform mass transfer porous channel and interfacial superhydrophilicity render the droplet ultra-homo nucleation site and coordinatively regulate the interfacial nucleation energy. The highly precise microchannel in UHIC can control the CO2 gas flow rate and sufficient interfacial Gas–Liquid diffusion of the CaCO3 pre-nucleation cluster (PNC). By coordinating the PNC diffusion, self-organization and nucleus growth, the proportion of synthesized CaCO3 crystals with spherical and polyhedral structures both increased to higher than 96.77 %, and the crystal size distribution was very uniform (minimum C.V. =11.7%). Fundamental theory of CaCO3 synthesis with UHIC as a desire interfacial reactive were then outlined, which can shed light on the high-selective synthesis of the microscale biomaterials.

This article proposes a new differential-cascading-based dual-stator brushless doubly-fed induction machine with a staggered dual cage rotor. Conventional differential mode of the brushless doubly-fed machine with cage rotor suffers from the low number of rotor bars because of the low equivalent synchronous pole pairs of |p1-p2|, and thus, severe rotor flux leakage, low capacity of magnetic field conversion of the rotor and low efficiency. To overcome the obstacle of the excessive harmonics of the rotor, a design method based on the differential cascading is proposed which enables the cage rotor with a high number of conductor bars even in the case of low pole pairs of |p1-p2|, hence the greatly reduced rotor leakage inductance and enhanced performance of the machine. The rotating magneto-motive force theory is applied to derive the interconnection rule of the staggered dual cage rotor, and meanwhile, the corresponding examples are illustrated. The performance comparisons between the differential cascading and the sum cascading based on the proposed machine are carried out. The results show that the proposed machine based on the differential cascading obtains higher power densities comparing to the sum cascading at the region of sub-natural synchronous speed, while its drawback is the increment of the loss due to the high rotor frequency, gaining lower efficiencies at the region of super-natural synchronous speed.

Accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) is a key factor to obtain good surgical outcome for refractory epilepsy patients. However, no technique, so far, can precisely locate the EZ, and there are barely any reports on the combined application of multiple technologies to improve the localization accuracy of the EZ. In this study, we aimed to explore the use of a multimodal method combining PET-MRI, fluid and white matter suppression (FLAWS)—a novel MRI sequence, and high-frequency oscillation (HFO) automated analysis to delineate EZ. We retrospectively collected 15 patients with refractory epilepsy who underwent surgery and used the above three methods to detect abnormal brain areas of all patients. We compared the PET-MRI, FLAWS, and HFO results with traditional methods to evaluate their diagnostic value. The sensitivities, specificities of locating the EZ, and marking extent removed versus not removed [RatioChann(ev)] of each method were compared with surgical outcome. We also tested the possibility of using different combinations to locate the EZ. The marked areas in every patient established using each method were also compared to determine the correlations among the three methods. The results showed that PET-MRI, FLAWS, and HFOs can provide more information about potential epileptic areas than traditional methods. When detecting the EZs, the sensitivities of PET-MRI, FLAWS, and HFOs were 68.75, 53.85, and 87.50%, and the specificities were 80.00, 33.33, and 100.00%. The RatioChann(ev) of HFO-marked contacts was significantly higher in patients with good outcome than those with poor outcome (p< 0.05). When intracranial electrodes covered all the abnormal areas indicated by neuroimaging with the overlapping EZs being completely removed referred to HFO analysis, patients could reach seizure-free (p < 0.01). The periphery of the lesion marked by neuroimaging may be epileptic, but not every lesion contributes to seizures. Therefore, approaches in multimodality can detect EZ more accurately, and HFO analysis may help in defining real epileptic areas that may be missed in the neuroimaging results. The implantation of intracranial electrodes guided by non-invasive PET-MRI and FLAWS findings as well as HFO analysis would be an optimized multimodal approach for locating EZ.

PURPOSE:To investigate changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and axial length (AL) on the ascent to high altitude from Beijing to Lhasa. PATIENTS AND METHODS:Twenty volunteers (17 men, 3 women) who had been sent to work in Lhasa, Tibet for more than 6 months were enrolled. One of their journeys from Beijing to Lhasa was chosen as the time for the examination. IOP, AL, corneal curvature (K), and blood pressure (BP) were measured in Beijing (altitude 43 m) and Lhasa (altitude 3658 m). Their first examination was conducted at least 1 day before arriving in Lhasa and the second examination after they had stayed in Lhasa for 7 days. The data from the highland and lowland examinations were analyzed with a paired-sample T test and Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated for the association between IOP and average BP. RESULTS:The mean IOP was 12.65±2.34 mmHg in Beijing and 14.85±3.1 mmHg in Lhasa. The mean AL was 24.61±1.50mm in Beijing, and 24.98±1.45 mm in Lhasa. To provide the general information on corneal transplantation (CT) in China, China Cornea Society designed a questionnaire on CT from 2014 to 2018 and entrusted it to 31 committee members for implementation of the survey nationwide. This article presents the results of the survey and compares the indicators used in the survey and those in the annual statistical report released by the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA). The number of corneal transplantations completed by the 64 hospitals from 2014 to 2018 was respectively 5377, 6394, 7595, 8270 and 8980, totally 36,616 (22,959 male and 13,657 female). The five largest hospitals by the number of corneal transplantations completed 15,994 surgeries in total, accounting for 43.68% of all the surgeries performed in the 64 hospitals. The most common indication for corneal transplantations was corneal leukoma (7683, 20.98%), followed by bacterial keratitis (4209, 11.49%), corneal dystrophies (4189, 11.44%), keratoconus (3578, 9.77%) and corneal perforation (2839, 7.75%). The main surgical techniques were penetrating keratoplasty (PK) (19,896, 54.34%), anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK) (13,869, 37.88%). The proportion of PK decreased from 57.97% in 2014 to 52.88% in 2018 while the proportion of ALK increased from 36.04% in 2014 to 37.92% in 2018. The geographical distribution of keratoplasties performed in China is unbalanced. PK and ALK were the main techniques of CT and corneal leukoma, bacterial keratitis and corneal dystrophies were the main indications for CT in China.

Abstract Background To investigate use of collagenase type II for generating a rabbit model of corneal ectasia. Methods Ten New Zealand white rabbits were used with right eyes treated as the experimental group and left eyes treated as the control group. After epithelial debridement, a collagenase type II solution (200 μL of 5 mg/mL) was applied in the experimental group at room temperature (24 °C) for 30 min, and a 200 μL solution without collagenase was applied in the control group. Slit-lamp microscopy, the mean keratometry (Km), and central cornea thickness (CCT) were examined before and after the procedure. Corneas were obtained on day 14 for biomechanical evaluation. Results No obvious inflammatory reaction was observed in all eyes after the procedure. A statistically significant increase in Km (1.54 ± 1.29D vs − 0.82 ± 0.44D at day7 and 0.89 ± 0.89D vs − 2.11 ± 1.02D at day14) and a statistically significant decrease in CCT (− 23.10 ± 12.17 μm vs 6.20 ± 16.51 μm at day7 and − 16.10 ± 10.46 μm vs 11.60 ± 0.88 μm at day14) were observed in the experimental group compared with the control group. The mean stresses and elastic modulus at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% deformities in the experimental group decreased and the differences in elastic modulus between the two groups were statistically significant at 10% and 15% deformities. Conclusions Collagenase type II treatment results in mimic KC with increased corneal keratometry and corneal thinning and a lower elastic modulus. An animal model for corneal ectasia can be generated by treatment with collagenase type II.

The active vector effects on torque and flux linkage are different in interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) systems at different times under direct torque control (DTC). These different effects may cause overcompensation or undercompensation to torque and flux linkage leading to large torque and flux linkage ripples in the IPMSM DTC systems. A novel duty ratio modulation strategy for the IPMSM DTC systems is presented, which considers these differences that are ignored in conventional duty ratio modulation strategies. The proposed duty ratio modulation strategy aims at minimizing torque ripple and flux linkage ripple, which makes sure that the control system can work in an optimum state. The active angle, the impact angle, the active factor, and the impact factor are first introduced. The active angel and the impact angle are used to get the active factor and the impact factor, respectively. Every sector is divided into five small sectors based on the impact angels, and then, a switching table is redesigned according to the small sectors division. Also, the vector selection rules for the redesigned switching table are described in details. Subsequently, an optimal duty ratio can be derived through the simplified duty ratio determination method. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed novel modulation strategy is verified through the experimental results on a 100-W IPMSM drive system.

Chouguiyu, a Chinese traditional fermented fish, is famous for its uniquely strong odor and desirable taste. However, traditional spontaneous fermentation often resulted in contamination and unstable quality of products. In this study, individual or conjunctive inoculation of two indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Lactococcus lactis M10 and Weissella cibaria M3, was tested for their effect on improving Chouguiyu’s quality. It was shown that inoculation would not affect the system’s pH, while increased the total bacteria count and lactic acid bacteria amounts. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass (MALDI-TOF) analysis results revealed that Lactoc. lactis M10 and W. cibaria M3 could quickly occupy a dominant position in the ecosystem, and Lactoc. lactis M10 played an important role in the control of spoilage bacteria. Volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and biogenic amines results also showed that Lactoc. lactis M10 had a positive effect on improving the product’s quality. Co-inoculation of Lactoc. lactis M10 and W. cibaria M3 could promote the formation of flavor according to the E-nose and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analyses, especially for the aroma-active and key volatile compounds. PCA plots of E-nose and hierarchical clustering analysis of GC-MS profiles revealed that the co-inoculation sample at the fifth day (LW5) was the most similar to the natural fermentation sample at the seventh day (C7). The overall acceptance of LW5 was also the closest to that of C7 in sensory evaluation. In conclusion, mixed starter culture was shown to have a good effect on improving product quality and enhancing flavor with fermentation time shortened by 29%.

Background: Human fetal striatum-derived neural stem cells (hfsNSCs) are important in regenerative medicine; however, their ability to self-renew diminishes quickly following passages in culture. Typically when hfsNSC-derived neurospheres are dissociated by accutase, more than 90% of the cells survive, but only 6-8% of the cells are able to form secondary neurospheres. Our hypothesis is that the hfsNSCs that are unable to form new neurospheres become apoptotic. Methods/Results: Because the NSC apoptosis process has never been characterized in detail, we characterized hfsNSC apoptosis using multiparameter analysis and determined that the majority of hfsNSCs undergo apoptosis after passaging, which leads to a reduction in self-renewal. The replacement of trituration with vortexing decreases apoptosis, increases self-renewal, and does not affect NSC differentiation. When we used live cell staining with Annexin V, Hoechst 33342, and PI together, the apoptotic index was in agreement with what could be obtained using fixed-cell staining methods, including TUNEL and activated caspase-3 immunocytochemistry. NSC apoptosis could be divided into 9 stage types based on our live cell assay. Several types during early and late stages had similar staining profiles that could be further discriminated based on cell size. Conclusion: Apoptosis largely contributes to the low self-renewal of neurospheres, and replacing trituration with vortexing aided in alleviating NSC apoptosis. Multiparameter analysis is required for the identification of NSC apoptosis, particularly when live cell staining is used.

Changes in physicochemical characteristics, chemical structures and maturity of swine, cattle and chicken manures and composts during 70-day composting without addition of bulking agents were investigated. Physicochemical characteristics were measured by routine analyses and chemical structures by solid-state 13C NMR and FT-IR. Three manures were of distinct properties. Their changes in physicochemical characteristics, chemical structures, and maturity were different not only from each other but also from those with addition of bulking agents during composting. Aromaticity in chicken manure composts decreased at first, and then increased whereas that in cattle and swine manure composts increased. Enhanced ammonia volatilization occurred without addition of bulking agents. NMR structural information indicated that cattle and chicken composts were relatively stable at day 36 and 56, respectively, but swine manure composts were not mature up to day 70. Finally, the days required for three manures to reach the threshold values of different maturity indices were different.

We investigate a joint pricing and purchasing problem for the dual-channel newsvendor model with the assumption that only the mean and variance of the demand are known. The newsvendor in our model simultaneously distributes a single product through traditional retail and Internet. A robust optimization approach that maximizes the worst-case profit is adapted under the aforementioned conditions to model demand uncertainty and linear clearing functions that characterize the relationship between demand and prices. We obtain a close-form expression for the robust optimal policy. Illustrative simulations and numerical experiments show the effects of several parameters on the optimal policy and on newsvendor performance. Finally, we determine that the gap between newsvendor performance under demand certainty and uncertainty is minimal, which shows that the robust approach can significantly improve performance.

This paper investigates pricing and ordering as well as advertising coordination issues in a single-manufacturer single-retailer supply chain, where the manufacturer sells a newsvendor-type product through the retailer who faces a stochastic demand depending on both retail price and advertising expenditure. Under the assumption that the market demand has a multiplicative functional form, the Stackelberg and cooperative game models are developed, and the closed form solution to each model is provided as well. Comparisons and insights are presented. We show that a properly designed revenue-cost-sharing contract can achieve supply chain coordination and lead to a Pareto improving win-win situation for channel members. We also discuss the allocation of the extra joint profit according to individual supply chain members’ risk preferences and negotiating powers.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of local muscle or myocutaneous flap transfer for emergent repair of Gustilo IIIB open tibiofibular fractures. This retrospective case series study included patients with Gustilo IIIB open tibiofibular fractures treated by local muscle or myocutaneous flap transfer in Weifang People’s Hospital between May 2016 and April 2021. Fifteenpatients (11 males aged 19–72 years) were included. The follow-up ranged from 8 to 24 months. The ranges of bone healing time and wound healing time were 6–17 months and 1–3 weeks, respectively. The length of hospital stay was 26 days (11–50 days). All patients reported acceptable functional recovery and satisfactory leg appearance, with Johner-Wruhs scores of excellent, good, and fair in 10, four, and one patients, respectively. The excellent-good rate was 93.3%. The complications included one case of infection and one case of nonunion. In conclusion, local muscle or myocutaneous flap transfer for emergent repair of Gustilo IIIB open tibiofibular fractures may be useful in providing adequate soft tissue coverage and fracture healing with low complication and infection rates.

Abstract Background There is no consensus on the cause and effect of systemic chronic inflammation (SCI) regarding chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The impact of second-hand smoke (SHS) on COPD has reached inconsistent conclusions. Methods The China Kadoorie Biobank cohort was followed up from the 2004–08 baseline survey to 31 December 2018. Among the selected 445,523 participants in the final analysis, Cox and linear regressions were performed to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of tobacco exposure with COPD risk and baseline levels of log-transformed inflammatory factors [βs (95% CIs)], respectively. Results Participants were followed up for a median of 12.1 years and 11,825 incident COPD events were documented. Ever-smokers were associated with a higher risk of COPD than non-smokers with non-weekly SHS exposure. A younger age to start smoking, a greater amount of daily tobacco consumption, and deeper inhalation were associated with increased risk of COPD and correlated with elevated levels of plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP, all P trend

Abstract Little is known about the prospective association between autosomal mosaic chromosomal alterations (mCAs), a group of large-scale somatic mutations on autosomes, and bladder cancer. Here we utilized data from 99,877 participants who were free of physician-diagnosed cancer at baseline (2004–2008) of the China Kadoorie Biobank to estimate the associations between autosomal mCAs and bladder cancer (ICD-10: C67). A total of 2874 autosomal mCAs events among 2612 carriers (2.6%) were detected. After a median follow-up of 12.4 years, we discovered that participants with all autosomal mCAs exhibited higher risks of bladder cancer, with a multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of 2.60 (1.44, 4.70). The estimate of such association was even stronger for mosaic loss events (HR [95% CI]: 6.68 [2.92, 15.30]), while it was not significant for CN-LOH events. Both expanded (cell fraction ≥10%) and non-expanded autosomal mCAs, as well as mosaic loss, were associated with increased risks of bladder cancer. Of interest, physical activity (PA) significantly modified the associations of autosomal mCAs and mosaic loss (P interaction = 0.038 and 0.012, respectively) with bladder cancer. The increased risks of bladder cancer were only observed with mCAs and mosaic loss among participants with a lower level of PA (HR [95% CI]: 5.11 [2.36, 11.09] and 16.30 [6.06, 43.81]), but not among participants with a higher level of PA. Our findings suggest that peripheral leukocyte autosomal mCAs may represent a novel risk factor for bladder cancer, and PA may serve as a potential intervention target for mCAs carriers.

Abstract Perineural invasion (PNI) is a new approach of cervical cancer invasion and metastasis, involving the cross-talk between tumor and nerve. However, the initiating signals and cellular interaction mechanisms of PNI remain largely elusive. The nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy (NSRH) proposed to improve postoperative quality of life is only applicable to cervical cancer patients without PNI. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the underlying mechanisms initiating PNI, and suggest the effective biomarkers to predict PNI before NSRH surgery. Here, we found that PNI is the characteristic of advanced cervical cancer, and Schwann cells were the antecedent cells that initiating PNI. Further, neuropeptide neuromedin B (NMB) produced by cervical cancer cells was determined to induce PNI by reprogramming Schwann cells, including driving their morphological and transcriptional changes, promoting their proliferation and migration, and initiating PNI by secreting CCL2 and directing axon regeneration. Mechanistically, cervical cancer cells-produced NMB activated its receptor NMBR in Schwann cells, and opened the T-type calcium channels to stimulate Ca2+ influx through PKA signaling, which could be blocked by the inhibitor. Clinically, combined examination of serum NMB and CCL2 levels was suggested to effectively predict PNI in cervical cancer patients. Our data demonstrate that cervical cancer-produced NMB initiates the reprograming of Schwann cells, which then direct axon regeneration, thus causing PNI onset. The elevated serum NMB and CCL2 levels may be useful for the decision-making to nerve sparing during hysterectomy surgery of cervical cancer patients.

Increasing throughput at container terminals leads to higher yard occupancy rates, reduced yard service capacity, and inefficient use of space. These issues result in longer waiting times for trucks, underutilized yard slots, and longer distances between berth positions and the yard, particularly under high occupancy conditions. Traditional methods for allocating yard space fail to adequately consider dynamic container arrival patterns, conflict between container operations, and efficient use of yard resources. This paper introduces an innovative approach to improve yard efficiency by dividing yard container retrieval into time intervals and dynamically reserving yard slots within each interval. This method aims to minimize operational conflicts, reduce distances between blocks and berths, and avoid excessive reservations. We propose a dynamic reservation algorithm based on a reward-penalty mechanism to handle the problem's complexity and real-time demands. Furthermore, a time-series reward-penalty mechanism, which considers past reservation feedback and future reservation potential, ensures the concentration and continuity of container groups in the yard. Our evaluation metrics and multiple experimental scenarios demonstrate that this method significantly enhances yard efficiency and overall port productivity compared to static and other dynamic algorithms.
