Composite pile foundation has been widely used in ground engineering. This composite pile foundation system has complex pile-soil interactions under seismic loading. The calculation of vertical bearing capacity of composite pile foundation is still an unsolved problem if the soil around piles is partially or completely liquefied under seismic loading. We have completed indoor shaking table model tests to measure the vertical bearing capacity in a liquefiable soil foundation under seismic loading. This paper will use a numerical approach to analyze the change of this vertical bearing capacity under seismic loading. Firstly, the Goodman contact element is improved to include the Rayleigh damping. Such an improvement can well describe the reflection and absorption of seismic waves at the interface of soil and piles. Secondly, the Biot's dynamic consolidation theory incorporated an elastoplastic model is applied to simulate the soil deformation and the generation and accumulation of pore water pressure under seismic loading. Thirdly, after verification with our indoor shaking table test data, this approach is used to investigate the effects of pile spacing on liquefaction resistance of the composite pile foundation in liquefiable soil. The time histories of pore water pressure ratio (PPR') are calculated for the liquefiable soil and the vertical bearing capacity in partially liquefied soil is calculated and compared with our indoor shaking table test data at the 3D, 3.5D, 4D, 5D and 6D cases (D is the pile diameter). It is found that the pile spacing has some influence on the extent of soil liquefaction between piles. The vertical bearing capacity varies with liquefaction extent of inter-pile soil. The optimization of pile spacing varies with liquefaction extent. These results may provide some reference for the design of composite pile foundation under seismic loading.

To explore the initial orientation effect of ballast assembly on the reinforcement performance of the geogrid reinforced ballast, particles with random orientation and five prescribed rotational orientations were developed through particle flow code (PFC3D). The evolution laws of the pullout force and the principal directions of the normal contact force were systematically compared and analyzed. Furthermore, the mechanical responses such as pullout force, distribution of axial force, displacement vectors, force chain, and mesoscopic fabric were discussed. According to the displacement vectors of the ballast particles, the average thickness of the stable shear band is determined. The inherent relationships among the force chain, the rotational angle of the normal contact force, and the mesoscopic fabric parameters are revealed. The results show that the pullout force of specimens with the initial orientation of 45° increases monotonously during the pullout process, and the peak value of pullout force appears at the end of the test. The mesostructural analysis also confirms that the evolution of the principal direction of contact normal force is relatively steady during the pullout process, indicating that the specimen with 45° orientation possesses higher systematic stability and ductility. Moreover, the optimum interval from 56.68° to 57.30° is observed to remain in a self-adapting state for ballast assembly.

Solid-state photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) solar energy converters are newly proposed devices that can directly convert solar energy into electrical power at high temperatures. An analytical model based on a one-dimensional steady-state equation is developed to analyze the temperature-dependent performance of the solid-state PETE converter. The treatment used to derive the reverse saturation current density ( J 0 ) and open-circuit voltage ( V o c ) of the solid-state PETE converter is similar to that used in photovoltaic cells. Thus, their performances at elevated temperatures can be compared. Analysis results show that J 0 of the solid-state PETE converter with a GaAs absorption layer is approximately three orders of magnitude lower, and the decrease rate of open-circuit voltage ( − d V o c / d T ) is smaller than that of a practical GaAs photovoltaic cell. The improved performance of the solid-state PETE converter at high temperatures is attributed to the simultaneous use of diffusion and ballistic transport to harvest photo-generated electrons. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that, besides using wide bandgap materials and increasing doping density, harvesting solar energy via PETE effect can effectively improve the performance of solar cells at elevated temperatures.

A three-dimensional finite element program for thermal analysis of hydration heat in concrete structures with a plastic pipe cooling system is introduced in this paper. The program was applied to simulation of the temperature and stress field of the Cao'e Sluice during the construction period. From the calculated results, we can find that the temperature and stress of concrete cooled with plastic pipes are much lower than those of concrete without pipes. Moreover, plastic pipes could not be corroded by seawater. That is to say, a good effect of temperature control and cracking prevention can be achieved, which provides a useful reference for other similar nearshore concrete projects.

The alternating current (AC) impedance characteristics of silty soil samples have been studied by measuring their AC impedance parameters within the frequency range of 50-106 Hz. The parameters include the real part Z′, imaginary part Z″, impedance module ∣Z∣, and phase difference θ. The effects of the frequency ƒ and the water content w on these parameters are analyzed. The electrical resistivity ρs of silty soil is also calculated, and the relational expression between ρs and w is fitted. Finally, a predication formula of soil w is developed using ρs and ƒ. The results indicate that Z′, -Z″, and ∣Z∣ decrease with increasing logarithm of frequency, log ƒ, and w. Also, θ increases with increasing log ƒ, and θ does not change with w, except at ƒ = 50 and 102 Hz. Given the strong relation of Z′ with w, Z′ of silty soil is primarily determined by the polarizability of free water. In contrast, Z″ of silty soil mainly represents loss from conduction. ∣Z∣ is affected by the polarizability of free water and conduction loss. θ shows the capacitance of the silty soil. At every ƒ, an exponential function is used to simulate soil w increase with decreasing ρs, which has a very high correlation coefficient. In this work, the conduction mechanism of avalanche transistors was demonstrated and the operation condition for generating high-speed pulse using avalanche transistors was illustrated. Based on the above analysis, a high-speed and high-voltage pulse (HHP) generating circuit using avalanche transistors was designed, and its working principle and process were studied. To improve the speed of the output pulse, an approach of reducing the rise time of the leading edge is proposed. Methods for selecting avalanche transistor and reducing the parasitic inductance and capacitance of printed circuit board (PCB) were demonstrated. With these instructions, a PCB with a tapered transmission line was carefully designed and manufactured. Output pulse with amplitude of 2 kV and rise time of about 200 ps was realized with this PCB mounted with avalanche transistors FMMT417, indicating the effectiveness of the HHP generating circuit design.
