Abstract Aluminum batteries have become the most attractive next-generation energy storage battery due to their advantages of high safety, high abundance, and low cost. However, the dendrite problem associated with inhomogeneous electrodeposition during cycling leads to low Coulombic efficiency and rapid short-circuit failure of the aluminum metal anode, which severely hampers the cycling stability of aluminum battery. Here we show an aluminum anode material that achieves high lattice matching between the substrate and the deposit, allowing the aluminum deposits to maintain preferred crystal plane growth on the substrate surface. It not only reduces the nucleation barrier of aluminum and decreases electrode polarization, but also enables uniform deposition of aluminum, improving the cycling stability of aluminum batteries. Aluminum anode with (111) preferred crystal plane can stably 25000 cycles at the current density of 5 A·g−1, with a capacity retention rate of over 80%.

Background: The diameter and shape of the left atrial appendage (LAA) orifices may influence occluder selection and the outcomes of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of LAA orifice diameter on the safety and efficacy of LAAC using the LAmbre device. Methods: A total of 133 patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) who underwent LAAC with the LAmbre device between June 2018 and June 2020 were included in this study. Chrysanthemum, an agricultural economic crop with ornamental, medicinal, and edible values, faces the problem of continuous cropping obstacles in its cultivation. As a potential soil conditioner used to address continuous cropping obstacles (CCOs), the applicability of biochar in chrysanthemum cultivation has become a research hotspot. This study explored the effects of three different types of biochar (rice straw biochar = RB, pig manure biochar = PB, and sludge biochar = SB) on soil for chrysanthemum that had been continuously cultivated for eight years through pot experiments. The results indicate that the addition of biochar significantly reduced soil water loss. Compared with CK, the water retention rates of the SB and PB treatments increased by 25.4% and 18.4%, respectively. In the PB treatment, the contents of available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) increased by 85% and 164%, respectively. The available nitrogen (AN) content showed the highest increase under the SB treatment. All three types of biochar could improve the pH value of chrysanthemum soil with CCOs (increased by 0.4–5.4%). The results of microbial community diversity showed that, compared with CK, PB and RB slightly reduced the diversity of bacterial communities in chrysanthemum soil with CCOs (by 1.50% and 0.41%, respectively). However, the SB treatment increased the diversity of bacterial communities in chrysanthemum soil with CCOs (by 0.41%). At the same time, SB and PB significantly inhibited the diversity of fungal communities (reduced by 15.15% and 6.67%, respectively), while RB promoted the diversity of fungal communities (increased by 5.45%). Furthermore, the analysis results of bacterial phyla and genera indicated that PB and SB had enhancing effects on the beneficial bacterial phylum Actinobacteriota (8.66% and 4.64%) and the beneficial bacterial genus Nocardioides (23.29% and 9.69%). Additionally, the PB treatment enhanced the beneficial bacterial phylum Firmicutes (7.03%). The analysis results of fungal genera and phyla indicated that PB contributed to an increase in the beneficial fungal phylum Ascomycota (1.51%). RB significantly enhanced the beneficial fungal genus Chaetomium (56.34%). Additionally, all three types of biochar effectively reduced the abundance of the harmful fungal phylum Basidiomycota (30.37–73.03%). In the PB and SB treatments, the harmful fungal phylum Mucoromycota was significantly decreased (by 36.22% and 62.60%, respectively). Finally, all three types of biochar reduced the abundance of harmful fungal genera Acremonium (1.15–35.19%) and Phoma (97.1–98.7%). In this study, we investigated the effect of three kinds of biochar (RB, PB, and SB) on the soil of chrysanthemum continuous cropping through potting experiments and found that they could significantly reduce water loss, enhance water retention, increase the soil nutrient content, improve the pH value, regulate microbial communities, increase beneficial microorganisms, and reduce harmful microorganisms. These results provide a scientific basis for addressing barriers to continuous cropping (CC) while supporting the sustainability of agriculture and the development of agroecology.

Background: Pericardial effusion or pericardial tamponade (PE/PT) is a relatively common complication of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC). However, delayed PE/PT is rare with limited data. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence and clinical consequences of delayed PE/PT following LAAC. Methods: Patients with nonvalvular AF who were successfully implanted with LAAC devices from October 2014 to April 2021 were consecutively screened. Subjects experiencing delayed PE/PT after LAAC were included. All treatment sessions of the subjects were recorded in detail. After discharge, the patients were followed up for clinical outcomes. Results: A total of 748 patients with successful LAAC [nitinol cage device (475 Watchman 2.5), nitinol plug device (131 ACP and 142 LAmbre)] were screened. Six patients experienced delayed PE/PT (1 Watchman, 2 ACP, 3 LAmbre). The incidence of delayed PE/PT was higher in patients with a nitinol plug device (1.8% vs. 0.2%, P = 0.027). Bloody PE only occurred in patients with a nitinol plug device (5/273, 1.8%). All the patients accepted pericardiocentesis and discontinuing antithrombotic medication, and none of the patients died or needed cardiac surgery. All patients were followed up for 810 (598, 1174) days after discharge. None of them developed constrictive pericarditis or thromboembolic or major bleeding events. Conclusion: Delayed PE/PT is rare but can occur, and the incidence of delayed bloody PE/PT for the nitinol plug device was higher than that for the nitinol cage device. The strategy of emergency pericardiocentesis combined with discontinuing antithrombotic medication may be effective for delayed bloody PE/PT.

Abstract 6G is believed to go beyond communication and provide integrated sensing and computing capabilities for a vision of Connected Intelligence with everything connected, everything sensed, and everything intelligent. Integrated sensing and communication will play a vital role for the fusion of physical and cyber worlds. The exploration of higher frequency bands, larger bandwidth, and more advanced large antenna technologies is paving the way towards the goal. In particular, the study of THz opens the possibility to have high resolution sensing and imaging capability on a communication mobile device. In this paper, we take a step along this direction and justify such possibility by building a THz sensing prototype with millimeter level imaging resolution while considering the physical aperture constraint of typical mobile device.

Background/Purpose: Anticoagulant therapy is suggested within 45 days after Watchman device implantation for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). A previous study demonstrated that non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) were a feasible peri- and postprocedural alternative to warfarin. The present study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of using different anticoagulants (low-dose NOACs vs. warfarin) within 45 days after Watchman device implantation in a Chinese population. Methods: Patients with successful Watchman device implantation from October 2014 to June 2020 were included. All patients received anticoagulants within 45 days after the procedure, and those patients were divided into three groups according to the type of postprocedural anticoagulants. Transesophageal echocardiography follow-up was performed 45 days post procedure to assess residual flow and the occurrence of device-related thrombus (DRT). Results: A total of 368 patients were enrolled in the study. The study population was divided into three groups: the warfarin group (n = 77), the dabigatran group (n = 165) and the rivaroxaban group (n = 126). Periprocedural major bleeding was higher in the warfarin group (2.6% vs. 0% vs. 0%, P = 0.043), while minor bleeding was comparable among the groups (3.9% vs. 1.2% vs. 0.8%, P = 0.230). No periprocedural transient ischemic attack/stroke occurred. At follow-up, the incidence of DRT was higher in the warfarin group than in the other groups (4.2% vs. 0.6% vs. 0.8%; P = 0.116), but the difference was not statistically significant. The rates of thromboembolic and bleeding events were similar in the three groups. Conclusion: The safety and efficacy of low-dose dabigatran and rivaroxaban were comparable to those of warfarin within 45 days after Watchman device implantation in a Chinese population.

Abstract Atrial fibrosis occurs frequently with structural heart disease and is considered as a major cause of arrhythmia. Microarray-based profiling predicted the differential expression of SPP1 in atrial fibrosis. Herein, we aimed to analyze the role of shRNA-mediated SPP1 knockdown in the progression of atrial fibrosis as well as the downstream mechanism. In vivo model in mice and in vitro HL-1 cell model of atrial fibrosis were developed by the angiotensin II (Ang II) method, where SPP1 expression was validated by RT-qPCR. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments were performed in Ang II-induced mice and HL-1 cells to evaluate the effect of the SPP1/TGF-β/SREBP2/PCSK9 axis on cell viability, apoptosis, collagen production and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage in atrial fibrosis. Expression of SPP1, TGF-β, SREBP2 and PCSK9 was increased in Ang II-induced mice and HL-1 cells. Silencing of SPP1 inhibited the occurrence of atrial fibrosis, as reflected by attenuated cell viability and collagen production as well as increased cell apoptosis. Conversely, upregulated SPP1 enhanced atrial fibrosis, which was related to upregulation of TGF-β. In addition, TGF-β elevated the expression of SREBP2, which promoted mtDNA damage and the consequent atrial fibrosis by augmenting the expression of PCSK9. This study uncovers previously unrecognized pro-fibrotic activities of SPP1 in atrial fibrosis, which is achieved through activation of the TGF-β/SREBP2/PCSK9 signaling pathway and promotion of mtDNA damage.

Plant polysaccharides, a type of important bioactive compound, are involved in multiple plant defense mechanisms, and in particular polysaccharide-alleviated abiotic stress has been well studied. Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua (P. cyrtonema Hua) is a medicinal and edible perennial plant that is used in traditional Chinese medicine and is rich in polysaccharides. Previous studies suggested that sucrose might act as a precursor for polysaccharide biosynthesis. However, the role of sucrose metabolism and transport in mediating polysaccharide biosynthesis remains largely unknown in P. cyrtonema Hua. In this study, we investigated the contents of polysaccharides, sucrose, glucose, and fructose in the rhizome, stem, leaf, and flower tissues of P. cyrtonema Hua, and systemically identified the genes associated with the sucrose metabolism and transport and polysaccharide biosynthesis pathways. Our results showed that polysaccharides were mainly accumulated in rhizomes, leaves, and flowers. Besides, there was a positive correlation between sucrose and polysaccharide content, and a negative correlation between glucose and polysaccharide content in rhizome, stem, leaf, and flower tissues. Then, the transcriptomic analyses of different tissues were performed, and differentially expressed genes related to sucrose metabolism and transport, polysaccharide biosynthesis, and transcription factors were identified. The analyses of the gene expression patterns provided novel regulatory networks for the molecular basis of high accumulation of polysaccharides, especially in the rhizome tissue. Furthermore, our findings explored that polysaccharide accumulation was highly correlated with the expression levels of SUS, INV, SWEET, and PLST, which are mediated by bHLH, bZIP, ERF, ARF, C2H2, and other genes in different tissues of P. cyrtonema Hua. Herein, this study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the transcriptional regulation of polysaccharide accumulation and provides information regarding valuable genes involved in the tolerance to abiotic stresses in P. cyrtonema Hua.

In this study, lycopene was successfully encapsulated in polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles (PEC NPs) fabricated with a negatively charged polysaccharide, TLH-3, and a positively charged sodium caseinate (SC) via electrostatic interactions. Results showed that the lycopene-loaded PEC NPs were spherical in shape, have a particle size of 241 nm, have a zeta potential of −23.6 mV, and have encapsulation efficiency of 93.6%. Thus, lycopene-loaded PEC NPs could serve as effective lycopene carriers which affected the physicochemical characteristics of the encapsulated lycopene and improved its water dispersibility, storage stability, antioxidant capacity, and sustained release ability in aqueous environments when compared with the free lycopene. Moreover, encapsulated lycopene could enhance the cells' viability, prevent cell apoptosis, and protect cells from oxidative damage through the Nrf2/HO-1/AKT signalling pathway, via upregulation of antioxidase activities and downregulation of MDA and ROS levels. Therefore, the biocompatible lycopene-loaded PEC NPs have considerable potential use for the encapsulation of hydrophobic nutraceuticals in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Background/Purpose: Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is conventionally guided by fluoroscopy and transesophageal echocardiography. We introduce an LAAC technique without fluoroscopy exposure using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) and electroanatomic mapping system (EAMS) under local anesthesia. Methods: Seven non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients who underwent LAAC with the LAmbre devices under the ICE and EAMS guidance were compared to 7 patients following the conventional approach by propensity score matching. ICE probe was advanced into the left atrium (LA) to guide sizing and device implantation following the orthogonal tri-axial technique (Axis-X: from left pulmonary veins [PVs] to LAA; Axis-Y: from right PV ostium to LAA; Axis-Z: from lower LA to LAA). Results: The mean diameters of ostia and landing zone were 21.4 ± 3.9 mm and 20.4 ± 4.2 mm, respectively. LAmbre devices with a mean umbrella diameter of 23.7 ± 4.2 mm and cover disc diameter of 29.4 ± 3.6 mm were successfully implanted and acute complete LAA sealing without peri-device leak (PDL) were achieved in all cases. Neither fluoroscopy exposure nor contrast consumption was recorded. No procedure related complications were documented. The mean procedural time and PDLs at follow-ups were comparable to those in the conventional group. No stroke or thromboembolic events were documented. Conclusion: The fluoroscopy exposure could be minimized, even to zero, in the ICEguided LAAC procedures feasibly and safely using LAmbre devices. The orthogonal triaxial technique is considered efficacious and safe for the procedures.

Tomato ketchup was prepared using potato starch (PS)/xanthan gum (XG) combinations as a thickening agent, and its sensory textural properties, viscosity stability, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) imaging and rheological properties were evaluated. Results showed that PS/XG as a thickener enjoyed the highest score (4.6) with good sensory evaluation. Due to the electrostatic and steric repulsive forces between PS and XG, the tomato ketchup prepared by 2.5% w/w PS/XG (PS:XG was 80:1) had better acid resistance, superior hardness, adhesion adhesiveness and cohesiveness than potato starch (PS), modified starch (MS), and no thickener (Control). Particularly, PS/XG enhanced the viscosity of ketchup for its electrostatic repulsion which delays starch retrogradation. LF-NMR imaging demonstrated that the moisture distribution in ketchup prepared by PS/XG was the most uniform. With a thixotropic behavior, PS/XG had a similar flow curve as MS. Therefore, PS/XG exhibited a compelling potential as a thickener in the formulation of ketchup.

Background/Purpose: Experience in procedures combining left atrial appendage (LAA) closure (LAAC) and catheter ablation (CA) was scarce in Chinese nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with high risks for stroke and bleeding. We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of the combination therapy with LAAC and AF CA in a single procedure based on the multicenter data and medium-term follow-up results. Methods: A total of 122 AF patients with a mean CHA2DS2-VASc score of 4.3 ± 1.4 and HAS-BLED score of 3.3 ± 1.0 were enrolled. The Watchman (n = 83) devices were implanted either before or after AF ablations in the same procedure, while the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug (ACP, n = 39) devices were implanted immediately after CA. AF recurrence and transesophageal echocardiography results were evaluated. Results: All devices were successfully implanted and acute complete LAA occlusions were achieved in 115 (94.3%) of patients. Neither acute nor chronic peri-device leaks greater than 5 mm were detected. Oral anticoagulation was held in all patients but two with asymptomatic device-related thrombi, which were resolved after prolonged anticoagulation. AF-free success rate without antiarrhythmic drugs was 76.2% after a mean follow-up of 11.5 ± 6.8 months. No serious complications were observed during the follow-up. Conclusion: The combination therapy with LAAC and AF ablation in a single procedure was efficacious and safe in the Chinese symptomatic AF population with high risk for stroke and bleeding. Background: This research explores the relationship between the unipolar electrogram (UP-EGM) and lesion size index (LSI) in different regions of continuous circular lesions (CCLs) and to assess the safety and efficacy of UP-EGM-guided versus LSI-guided radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Methods: A total of 120 patients with drug-refractory PAF who underwent index RFCA were scheduled to be consecutively included from March 2020 to April 2021. All the patients were randomly divided 1:1 into two groups: the UP-EGM group and the LSI group. The first-pass PVI rate, acute PVI rate, and the sinus rhythm maintenance rate were compared. Results: A total of 120 patients with PAF were included in the study: the UP-EGM group (n = 60) and the LSI group (n = 60). All the LSI values in the UP-EGM group were less than those in the corresponding regions in the LSI group (all p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the first-pass PVI rate and acute PVI rate between the two groups. After a mean follow-up period of 11.31 ± 1.70 months, the sinus rhythm maintenance rate in the UP-EGM group was comparable to that in the LSI group (90% vs. 91.7%, p = 0.752). Conclusion: UP-EGM-guided and LSI-guided RFCA are both effective and safe in patients with PAF. However, UP-EGM may be more suitable than LSI for guiding individual RFCA.

Sarcodon aspratus is a popular edible fungus for its tasty flavour and can be used as a dietary supplement for its functional substances. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential health benefits of Sarcodon aspratus polysaccharides (SAFP) on water immersion and restraint stress (WIRS)-induced gastric ulcer in rats. The results indicated that SAFP could decrease myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and plasma corticosterone levels, as well as enhance Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and Nitrate/nitrite (NOx) concentration in rats. Furthermore, SAFP significantly attenuated the stress damage, inflammation, pathological changes and gastric mucosal lesion in rats. Moreover, high-throughput pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA suggested that SAFP modulated the dysbiosis of gut microbiota by enhancing the relative abundance of probiotics, decreasing WIRS-triggered bacteria proliferation. In summary, these results provided the evidence that SAFP exerted a beneficial effect on a WIRS-induced gastric ulcer via blocking the TLR4 signaling pathway and activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Notably, SAFP could modulate the WIRS-induced dysbiosis of gut microbiota. Thus, SAFP might be explored as a natural gastric mucosal protective agent in the prevention of gastric ulcers and other related diseases in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

IntroductionMultiple algorithms based on 12-lead ECG measurements have been proposed to identify the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) locations from which ventricular tachycardia (VT) and frequent premature ventricular complex (PVC) originate. However, a clinical-grade machine learning algorithm that automatically analyzes characteristics of 12-lead ECGs and predicts RVOT or LVOT origins of VT and PVC is not currently available. The effective ablation sites of RVOT and LVOT, confirmed by a successful ablation procedure, provide evidence to create RVOT and LVOT labels for the machine learning model.MethodsWe randomly sampled training, validation, and testing data sets from 420 patients who underwent successful catheter ablation (CA) to treat VT or PVC, containing 340 (81%), 38 (9%), and 42 (10%) patients, respectively. We iteratively trained a machine learning algorithm supplied with 1,600,800 features extracted via our proprietary algorithm from 12-lead ECGs of the patients in the training cohort. The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve was calculated from the internal validation data set to choose an optimal discretization cutoff threshold.ResultsThe proposed approach attained the following performance: accuracy (ACC) of 97.62 (87.44–99.99), weighted F1-score of 98.46 (90–100), AUC of 98.99 (96.89–100), sensitivity (SE) of 96.97 (82.54–99.89), and specificity (SP) of 100 (62.97–100).ConclusionsThe proposed multistage diagnostic scheme attained clinical-grade precision of prediction for LVOT and RVOT locations of VT origin with fewer applicability restrictions than prior studies.

Green roofs are an important part of urban green spaces. A good roof soil system contributes to the stability of the green roof ecosystem in harsh environments. Biochar as a soil additive can improve soil nutrients, although the mechanism of improvement on the roof substrate is still unclear. This research studied the effects on the physical and chemical properties of green roof soil and analyzed the biological characteristics of green roofs at five gradient ratios of biochar addition (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% biochar; v/v). The results indicated that biochar could improve the soil porosity (5.3–9.3%) and reduce the bulk density (3.9–10.8%); increase the soil moisture (14.0–37.2%); adjust the temperature, available nutrients and cation exchange capacity (38.1–75.9%) and regulate the soil pH values of the green roof. The biomass of soil microbes, eukaryotes and plants were increased by 75.3%, 199.2% and 57.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, the correlation between microbial diversity and soil nutrients was more significant due to the addition of biochar, and the increase of the phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) contents was the main factor affecting the microbial community. The structural equation model showed that biochar has a direct impact on the microbial diversity by improving the soil moisture, temperature and available nutrients, and the increase of the microbial diversity is conducive to plant growth. Summarily, biochar can be considered as a potential additive for roof soil amendment and promoting the growth of plants and microbes, which is beneficial to the development of a roof ecosystem.

The effects of annealing conditions on the degree of retrogradation (DR) in wheat starch were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Three annealing parameters were varied, namely moisture (50-90%), time (0.5-48 h), and temperature (35-50°C). These factors had different impacts on the DR. The results suggest that 25% (w/v) annealed wheat starch samples stored at 4°C for 7 days had smaller DR values than native wheat starch under the same storage conditions. XRD indicated that annealed wheat starches stored at 4°C for 7 days had fewer recrystallisations than native wheat starch. Optimised annealing conditions can be used to control the structural and mechanical properties of certain starch-based products, such as in the production of bread, since retrogradation results in staling and reduced digestibility.

This paper aims to make up for the research gap on the interaction between epigallocatechin3-O-(3"-O- methyl) gallate (EGCG3”Me) and alpha-glucosidase (α-glucosidase). Therefore, the interaction between the EGCG3”Me in tea and α-glucosidase was analysed with fluorescence spectrometry to ascertain the binding constants, the number of binding sites and thermodynamic parameters. The results indicate that the binding between EGCG3’’Me and α-glucosidase quenched the internal fluorescent intensity of the latter; the binding constants decreased with the rise of temperature, revealing that the binding ability was alleviated and the fluorescence quenching obeyed the static quenching mechanism; ∆H was negative and ∆S was positive in the binding reaction, signifying that the main interaction forces include the hydrophobic force and hydrogen bonds; the ∆G of the two molecules was negative, an evidence of the spontaneity of the reaction. Combined with the 3D fluorescence spectra changes of α-glucosidase, these results mean that the binding of the molecules was realized through the tryptophan and tyrosine residues in the α-glucosidase. The research proves that the EGCG3”Me in tea is potentially a natural inhibitor of α-glucosidase, and sheds new light on the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

The dielectric relaxation behavior of a regenerated cellulose (RC) film during isothermal dehydration was monitored in real time via dielectric spectroscopy, in order to investigate on one hand the influence of water on its dynamics and the variation of microstructure and phase composition during dehydration on the other. The progression of water loss is clearly revealed by the evolution of the dielectric relaxation behavior with drying time, which suggests two distinctly different drying stages separated by a striking transition period. The dielectric relaxation behavior at the first drying stage is found overwhelmingly dominated by ionic motion, and that at the second stage is basically a result of molecular dynamics. The mechanisms of these relaxations are proposed, through which the influence of water on the dynamics of the RC film and the variation of the microstructure and phase composition of the film at different hydration state are discussed in detail. An interesting finding is that highly ordered but noncrystalline arrangement of cellulose molecules exists, but it can be formed only when the film is in specific hydration state. This study demonstrates that dielectric spectroscopy is an effective tool in real-time monitoring kinetic process.

Microporous starch (MPS) granules were formed by the partial hydrolysis of starch using α–amylase and glucoamylase. Due to its biodegradability and safety, MPS was employed to adsorb tea polyphenols (TPS) based on their microporous characteristics. The influences of solution pH, time, initial concentration and temperature on the adsorptive capacity were investigated. The adsorption kinetics data conformed to the pseudo second–order kinetics model, and the equilibrium adsorption data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. According to the fitting of the adsorption isotherm formula, the maximum adsorption capacity of TPS onto MPS at pH 6.7 and T = 293 K was approximately 63.1 mg/g. The thermodynamic parameters suggested that the adsorption of TPS onto MPS was spontaneous and exothermic. Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR) analysis and the thermodynamics data were consistent with a physical adsorption mechanism. In addition, MPS-loaded TPS had better stability during long-term storage at ambient temperature.

Background: Bronchofiberscopy, a widely used procedure for the diagnosis of various pulmonary diseases within intensive care units, has a history of association with nosocomial infections. Between September and November 2009, an outbreak caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-Ab) was observed in the intensive care unit of a tertiary care hospital in Beijing, China. This study is aimed to describe the course and control of this outbreak and investigate the related risk factors. Methods: Clinical and environmental sampling, genotyping with repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR), and case-control risk factor analysis were performed in the current study. Results: During the epidemic period, 12 patients were infected or colonized with MDR-Ab. Sixteen (72.7%) of twenty-two MDR-Ab isolates from the 12 patients and 22 (84.6%) of 26 MDR-Ab isolates from the bronchofiberscope and the healthcare-associated environment were clustered significantly into a major clone (outbreak MDR-Ab strain) by REP-PCR typing. Seven patients carrying the outbreak MDR-Ab strain were defined as the cases. Six of the seven cases (83%) received bronchofiberscopy versus four of the 19 controls (21%) (odds ratio, 22.5; 95% confidence interval, 2.07-244.84; P = 0.005). Several potential administrative and technical problems existed in bronchofiberscope reprocessing. Conclusions: Bronchofiberscopy was associated with this MDR-Ab outbreak. Spinel LiMn2O4is one of the cathode active materials for the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries with the most potential, but suffers from a fast capacity fade when cycling at elevated temperatures (55 °C). Spinel LiMn1.97Ti0.03O4coated with aluminum nitrate is heat-treated at various temperatures. The sample treated at low temperature (500 °C) exhibits porous Al2O3layer coated on the surface, and little Al ion diffusing into the spinel structure. As for the sample treated at mid-temperature (700 °C), it exhibits double layers coated on the surface: the inner layer is LiAlxMn1.97−xTi0.03O4solid solution and the outer layer is compact Al2O3metal oxides. When the heat-treatment temperature increases to a high level (850 °C), nearly all the Al ion diffusing into the structure to form Al doped solid solution layer coated on the spinel. The relationship between the structure of the modified samples and their electrochemical properties is investigated. The galvanostatic charge–discharge results show that those surface-modified samples exhibit improved cycling performance compared to LiMn1.97Ti0.03O4; and the sample treated at mid-temperature delivers the best capacity retention, especially at 55 °C. The improved cycling performance is ascribed to the coated layers of Al2O3and LiAlxMn1.97−xTi0.03O4on the spinel particles. The Al2O3layer could reduce the HF damage by scavenging of HF. While the LiAlxMn1.97−xTi0.03O4layer could enhance the stability of the spinel structure due to the stronger Al–O bond; moreover, this coating layer having the same spinel structure with the LiMn1.97Ti0.03O4core material would not hinder the lithium ion diffusion. The sample treated at mid-temperature has the double layers coated on the surface, and its Al2O3coating becomes compact and thin which could effectively block the direct contact between the electrolyte and spinel particles as well as reduce the lithium ion diffusion distance in the inactive layer, leading to greatly improved capacity retention. Two wheat flours, Type I and Type II, were used to clarify the effect of tea polysaccharide (TPS) on dough-mixing behavior, fresh bread quality and bread staling. TPS level affected fresh bread quality favorably, with 2% for Type I bread and 3% for Type II bread, providing the optimal results. During storage, temperature had a major influence on bread properties. A decrease in moisture content and water activity and an increase in firmness and endothermic enthalpy were more pronounced at 4C than at 20C. The addition of TPS reduced the loss of moisture content, firmness and endothermic enthalpy of the breadcrumbs. The change in quality parameters of Type II breadcrumbs was larger than those of Type I over a 7-day storage. In addition, X-ray diffraction results confirmed that the suppressing effect of TPS on staling depended not only on TPS level and storage time, but also on the nature of wheat flour. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The work provided more groundwork for further application of tea polysaccharide in bake and nutrition fields. The results indicated that the magnitude of effects on the physical and sensory properties of bread was dependent on the amount of added tea polysaccharide, storage temperatures, storage time and the nature of wheat flour. Abstract  The homogenous coating of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on carbon nanotubes was realized by using functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in this study. Consequently, the PEDOT/functionalized SWNTs (PEDOT/F-SWNTs) composites, with size of around 100nm, which is much smaller than that of PEDOT, were prepared by the electrochemical method. Its small granule increased the active/nonactive mass ratio and reduced the ions diffusion length. Therefore, its specific capacitance of the composite was up to 200F g−1, which was remarkably greater than that of PEDOT. Furthermore, the PEDOT/F-SWNTs composites had very rapid charge/discharge ability with specific capacitance of 180F g−1 at scanning rate of 200mV s−1 and 170F g−1 at frequency of 1Hz, which is an important practical advantage. Homogeneous and fine bismuth titanate (BIT) nanoplate-like powders were synthesized by a modified and simple sol–gel method. The thermal gravimetry-differential thermal analysis-derivative differential thermal analysis indicated that BIT gel decomposes in two steps posited at approximately 278° and 432°C, and BIT began to crystallize before 450°C. Based on the high-temperature X-ray diffraction results, it was concluded that the crystallization temperature of BIT synthesized by the present method was about 425°C and there was no evidence of the formation of an intermediate phase. The BIT crystal structure belonged to the orthorhombic phase with lattice parameters a=5.420 Å, b=5.431 Å, and c=33.273 Å. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy revealed that fine and uniform BIT nanoplate-like powders, about 30 nm in size, were obtained after sintering at 500°C. With increasing temperature, the BIT grains rapidly grew and the coalescence of adjacent grains took place. A highly stable, water-based barium titanate BaTiO3, BT, sol was synthesized using a sol–gel route through a chelate lactate technique. Dried BT precursor powders were measured by thermal gravimetry–differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. It was found that BT powders first converted into barium carbonate BaCO3, Ti complex, and intermediate phase Ba2Ti2O5CO3, and then transformed into perovskite phase BaTiO3. The crystallization temperature was about 550°C. The low-voltage etched aluminum foils were covered with BT sol by dip coating, and then annealed at 600°C for 30 min in air. After that, the samples were anodized in a 15 wt% aqueous solution of ammonium adipate. The voltage–time variations during anodizing were monitored, and the electrical properties of the anodic oxide film were examined. It was shown that the specific capacitance, the product of specific capacitance and withstanding voltage, and leakage current of samples with a BT coating were about 48.93%, 38.50%, and 167% larger than that without a BT coating, respectively. Abstract  Barium titanate BaTiO3 (BT) sol was dip-coated on the etched aluminum foils by a sol–gel process. After annealed at 600 °C in air, the foils were anodized in ammonium adipate solution. The voltage–time variations during anodizing were monitored. The structure, composition, and electric properties of the anodic foils were investigated. The obtained foils were fabricated into aluminum electrolytic capacitors and the load and shelf life test were measured. It was found that the slope of the voltage–time curve of aluminum foil covered with BT films became steeper. A triple layer of Al/Al2O3/BT was formed after anodizing Al/BT foil. The specific capacitance and the product of specific capacitance and withstanding voltage of anodic foil with a BT coating were about 46.36% and 38.90% larger than that without a BT coating. After the load life and shelf life of 2500 h at 85 °C, two kinds of capacitors have similar behaviores and meet with Nichicon standard of Japan. From the results, BaTiO3 is promising to be used as the dielectric of aluminum electrolytic capacitor to increase the specific capacitance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
