Isochronous mass spectrometry based on heavy-ion storage rings is a powerful tool for direct mass measurements of very short-lived nuclei. Owing to the nature of in-flight separation of high-energy reaction products, many ion species with different mass-to-charge ratios (m/q) can be transmitted to and stored in the ring in one shot. However, high mass resolving power can be achieved only for a limited range of ion species with velocities well matching the isochronous condition of the ring. The knowledge of velocities of each stored ions is required to overcome this restriction. For this purpose, two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors were installed 18 m apart in one straight section of the cooler-storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. The time sequences measured by the two TOF detectors for each stored ion were used for the precision determination of its velocity. A relative precision of the velocity is achieved to the level of 10^{-5} for individual ions. The betatron oscillations of the ion motion in the ring were clearly identified in the data and were taken into account in the analysis. The presented technique can be used for measurements of machine tunes and their dependence on particle momenta.

Vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients were measured by a micro-pulse lidar at Naqu (31.5° N, 92.1° E; 4508 m a.m.s.l.), a meteorological station located on the central part of the Tibetan Plateau during summer 2011. Observations show a persistent maximum in aerosol extinction coefficients in the upper troposphere–lower stratosphere (UTLS). These aerosol layers were generally located at an altitude of 18–19 km a.m.s.l., 1–2 km higher than the tropopause, with broad layer depth ranging approximately 3–4 km and scattering ratio of 4–9. Daily averaged aerosol optical depths (AODs) of the enhanced aerosol layers in UTLS over the Tibetan Plateau varied from 0.007 to 0.030, in agreement with globally averaged levels of 0.018 ± 0.009 at 532 nm from previous observations, but the percentage contributions of the enhanced aerosol layers to the total AOD over the Tibetan Plateau are higher than those observed elsewhere. The aerosol layers in UTLS wore off gradually with the reducing intensity of the Asian monsoon over the Tibetan Plateau at the end of August. The eruption of Nabro volcano on 13 June 2011 is considered an important factor to explain the enhancement of tropopause aerosols observed this summer over the Tibetan Plateau.

Homogeneous low phosphorus availability was reported to regulate root architecture in Arabidopsis via auxin, but the roles of auxin in root architecture plasticity to heterogeneous P availability remain unclear. In this study, we employed auxin biosynthesis-, transport- and signalling-related mutants. Firstly, we found that in contrast to low P (LP) content in the whole medium, primary root (PR) growth of Arabidopsis was partially rescued in the medium divided into two parts: upper with LP and lower with high P (HP) content or in the reverse arrangement. The down part LP was more effective to arrest PR growth as well as to decrease density of lateral roots (DLR) than the upper LP, and effects were dependent on polar auxin transport. Secondly, we verified that auxin receptor TIR1 was involved in the responses of PR growth and lateral root (LR) development to P supply and loss of function of TIR1 inhibited LR development. Thirdly, effects of heterogeneous P on LRD in the upper part of PR was dependent on PIN2 and PIN4, and in the down part on PIN3 and PIN4, whereas density of total LRs was dependent on auxin transporters PIN2 and PIN7. Finally, heterogeneous P availability altered the accumulation of auxin in PR tip and the expression of auxin biosynthesisrelated genes TAA1, YUC1, YUC2, and YUC4. Taken together, we provided evidences for the involvement of auxin in root architecture plasticity in response to heterogeneous phosphorus availability in Arabidopsis.

Climate change is now a major environmental and developmental issue, and one that will increase the challenge of sustainable water resources management. In order to assess the implications of climate change for water resources in China, we calibrated a Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model with a resolution of 50×50 km2 using data from 125 well-gauged catchments. Based on similarities in climate conditions, soil texture and other variables, model parameters were transferred to other areas not covered by the calibrated catchments. Taking runoff in the period 1961–1990 as a baseline, we studied the impact of climate change on runoff under three emissions scenarios, A2, B2 and A1B. Model findings indicate that annual runoff over China as a whole will probably increase by approximately 3–10% by 2050, but with quite uneven spatial and temporal distribution. The prevailing pattern of "north dry and south wet" in China is likely to be exacerbated under global warming.

In order to reduce the temperature in the marine engine cabin, improve the working environment of the staff and meet the economy and emission requirements, the cooling system of the engine was experimentally investigated in the present study. In this regard, water cooling and air-cooling schemes were studied and the main indicators including engine torque, smoke-emission, and exhaust temperature were analyzed. The obtained results indicate that the highest torque can be obtained from the air-cooling turbine case and air-cooling exhaust pipe. As the applied torque decreases, the outlet smoke first decreases then increases and decreases finally. Moreover, it is found that the water-cooling turbine case and water-cooling exhaust pipe increase the smoke. When the turbocharger is equipped with a water-cooling turbine case and water-cooling exhaust pipe, the higher the engine torque, the higher the turbine exhaust temperature and oil tank temperature, and the greater the reduction of the exhaust temperature. The engine torque is in direct proportion to the fuel consumption. The greater the torque, the higher the engine speed and the greater the fuel consumption. The engine torque is inversely proportional to the fuel consumption rate. The greater the torque, the smaller the fuel consumption rate. In cases with water cooling exhaust devices at 110% loading speed, the temperature after the intercooler is higher than that with the air-cooling exhaust device. After the intercooler, the pressure increases as the applied torque increases, and a higher-pressure ratio can be obtained from the air-cooling exhaust device. The higher the engine torque, the higher the temperature of the turbine exhaust, the higher the outlet temperature of the circulating cooling water, and the higher the temperature in the cabin. It was concluded that the exhaust device of the air-cooling turbine case and water-cooling exhaust pipe can reduce the temperature in the engine parts by up to 2℃, thereby improving the working environment of the cabin staff, economic performance, and the emission index.

Carrier velocity modulation by asymmetrical concave quantum barriers to improve the performance of AlGaN-based deep-ultraviolet light emitting diodes has been investigated. The concave structure is realized by inserting a low Al composition AlGaN layer in the barrier, and thus forming a concave region on energy band. The measured device performance shows a significant improvement under 0-250 mA operation current, with the maximum external quantum efficiency and light output power of 1.02% and 8.0 mW, which are more than double (2.32 and 2.35 times) of that for the conventional one, respectively. Simulation confirms that the concave quantum barriers make it possible for electrons to be scattered, which reduce the electron energy before being injected into quantum wells, and thus the capability of quantum wells to capture electrons is enhanced. Meanwhile, the vertical transport of holes within the active region is also enhanced because the asymmetrical setting of the concave layer in the quantum barriers helps holes accelerate under the polarization field, and then get more energy to overcome the barrier.

Ecology and environmental suitability are widely used in urban ecology and regional ecology. However, there is still a lack of systematic evaluation method system for the research impacts of tourism development and tourism resource development on ecology and environment in ecologically sensitive scenic spots. Taking Lijiang River Basin, an ecologically sensitive area with typical karst landforms, as an example, this paper analyses the ecological and environmental suitability of tourism development from the perspective of space. In this paper, TM image and DEM model were firstly used to extract NDVI, slope, slope aspect and other related data. Then, based on the characteristics of the study area, the data of each factor was graded and assigned with a grade value, and the spatial situation of each single factor was analyzed, and superposition was carried out at last. Meanwhile, the study area is divided into three levels for tourism development, namely, unsuitable area, sub-suitable area and suitable area.

These aerosol layers were generally located at an altitude of 18-19kmm.s.l., 1-2 km higher than the tropopause, with broad layer depth ranging approximately 3-4 km. Variations in these aerosols are found to be closely related to the intensity of underlying deep convection. Efficient vertical transport resulting from the most intensive convection is considered to be most important for the enhancement of aerosols observed near the tropopause. Temporal variations in aerosol layer in UTLS over the Plateau show a significant peak at midnight. This further indicates that deep convection plays an important role in the accumulation of aerosols in UTLS over the Tibetan Plateau. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We investigated a solar active-region filament eruption associated with a C6.6 class flare and a coronal mass ejection (CME) in NOAA active region 08858 on 2000 February 9. Aims. We aim to better understand the relationship between filament eruptions and the associated flares and CMEs. Methods. Using BBSO, SOHO/EIT, and TRACE observational data, we analyzed the process of the active-region filament eruption in the chromosphere and the corona. Using the SOHO/MDI magnetograms, we investigated the change of the magnetic fields in the photosphere. Using the GOES soft X-ray flux and the SOHO/LASCO images, we identified the flare and CME, which were associated with this active-region filament eruption. Results. The brightenings in the chromosphere are a precursor of the filament expansion. The eruption itself can be divided into four phases: In the initial phase, the intertwined bright and dark strands of the filament expand. Then, the bright strands are divided into three parts with different expansion velocity. Next, the erupting filament-carrying flux rope expands rapidly and combines with the lower part of the expanding bright strands. Finally, the filament erupts accompanied by other dark strands overlying the filament.The overlying magnetic loops and the expansion of the filament strands can change the direction of the eruption. Conclusions. The time delay between the velocity peaks of the filament and that of the two parts of the bright strands clearly demonstrates that the breakup of the bright loops tying on the filament into individual strands is important for its eruption. Los trilobites oryctocefálidos del tránsito ‘Cámbrico inferior-medio’ representan herramientas clave para la correlación internacional. Las zonas de trilobites en China meridional a través del tránsito Serie cámbrica 2-Miaolingiense se basan en este grupo fósil. La base de una de estas zonas de trilobites se sitúa con la aparición de Protoryctocephalus arcticus. El género Protoryctocephalus, procedente del área de Balang en China meridional, fue descrito originalmente como Protoryctocephalus wuxunensis, también de la serie cámbrica 2 de China meridional. Sin embargo, en Balang Protoryctocephalus muestra diferentes caracteres morfológicos, tales como la forma glabelar, la presencia de un surco transglabelar S1 y más segmentos en el tronco (tórax + pigidio). Estos caracteres cuadran mejor con Protoryctocephalus arcticus de la Serie cámbrica 2 of Groenlandia.

In this work, a Wheatstone bridge-type pressure sensor based on AlGaN/GaN heterostructure was fabricated for the first time. The pressure sensor consisted of four gateless high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) on a 585 μm depth circular membrane, in which 15-μm-thick silicon substrate was left. Direct voltage readout was realized in the AlGaN/GaN pressure sensor, which exhibited a non-linearity of 0.6% with a sensitivity of 1.25 μV/kPa/V over a wide pressure range from 0.1 MPa to 5 MPa. Because of the in-plane isotropic properties, the working mechanism in the AlGaN/GaN pressure sensor is found to be quite different from the silicon-based sensor. Although the resistances of the four gateless HEMTs all increased with enlarging pressure, the changes of neighboring resistors varied with alignments under the piezoelectric effects. Finally, voltage linear readout was realized by the differential operation of Wheatstone bridge circuit.

Droughts are becoming the most expensive natural disasters in China and have exerted serious impacts on local economic development and ecological environment. The fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) provides a unique opportunity to assess scientific understanding of climate variability and change over a range of historical and future period. In this study, fine-resolution multimodel climate projections over China are developed based on 7 CMIP5 climate models under RCP8.5 emissions scenarios by means of Bilinear Interpolation and Bias Correction. The results of downscaled CMIP5 models are evaluated over China by comparing the model outputs with the England Reanalysis CRU3.1 from 1951 to 2000. Accordingly, the results from the output of downscaled models are used to calculate the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). Time series of SPI has been used to identify drought from 20th century to 21st century over China. The results show that, most areas of China are projected to become wetter as a consequence of increasing precipitation under RCP8.5 scenarios. Detailed examination shows that the SPI show a slightly increasing trend in the future period for the most parts of China, but drought in Southwest region of China will become the norm in the future RCP8.5 scenarios.

A frequency-reconfigurable coplanar-waveguide (CPW) fed monopole antenna using switchable stubbed ground structure is presented. Four PIN diodes are employed in the stubs stretching from the ground to make the antenna reconfigurable in three operating modes: a single-band mode (2.4-2.9 GHz), a dual-band mode (2.4-2.9 GHz/5.09-5.47 GHz) and a triple-band mode (3.7-4.26 GHz/5.3-6.3 GHz/8.0-8.8 GHz). The monopole antenna is resonating at 2.4 GHz, while the stubs produce other operating frequency bands covering a number of wireless communication systems, including WLAN, WiMAX, C-band, and ITU. Furthermore, an optimized biasing network has been integrated into this antenna, which has little influence on the performance of the antenna. This paper presents, compares and discusses the simulated and measured results.

The transmission performance of multichannel adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (AMOOFDM) signals is investigated numerically, for the first time, in optical-amplification-free and chromatic-dispersion-compensation-free intensity-modulation and direct-detection systems directly incorporating modulated distributed feedback (DFB) lasers (DMLs). It is shown that AMOOFDM not only significantly reduces the nonlinear wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) impairments induced by the effects of cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing but also effectively compensates for the DML-induced frequency chirp effect. In comparison with conventional modulated optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), which uses an identical signal modulation format across all the subcarriers, AMOOFDM improves the maximum achievable signal transmission capacity of a central WDM channel by a factor of 1.3 and 3.6 for 40- and 80-km standard single-mode fibers, respectively, with the corresponding dynamic input optical power ranges being extended by approximately 5 dB. In addition, AMOOFDM also causes the occurrence of cross-channel complementary modulation format mapping among various WDM channels, leading to considerably improved transmission capacities for all individual WDM channels.

We present a clear case study on the occurrence of two successive X-class flares, including a decade-class flare (X9.3) and two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) triggered by shearing motion and sunspot rotation in active region NOAA 12673 on 2017 September 6. A shearing motion between the main sunspots with opposite polarities began on September 5 and lasted even after the second X-class flare on September 6. Moreover, the main sunspot with negative polarity rotated around its umbral center, and another main sunspot with positive polarity also exhibited a slow rotation. The sunspot with negative polarity at the northwest of the active region also began to rotate counterclockwise before the onset of the first X-class flare, which is related to the formation of the second S-shaped structure. The successive formation and eruption of two S-shaped structures were closely related to the counterclockwise rotation of the three sunspots. The existence of a flux rope is found prior to the onset of two flares by using nonlinear force-free field extrapolation based on the vector magnetograms observed by Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Image. The first flux rope corresponds to the first S-shaped structures mentioned above. The second S-shaped structure was formed after the eruption of the first flux rope. These results suggest that a shearing motion and sunspot rotation play an important role in the buildup of the free energy and the formation of flux ropes in the corona that produces solar flares and CMEs. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections are the most powerful explosions in the Sun. They are major sources of potentially destructive space weather conditions. However, the possible causes of their initiation remain controversial. Using high-resolution data observed by the New Solar Telescope of Big Bear Solar Observaotry, supplemented by Solar Dynamics Observatory observations, we present unusual observations of a small-scale emerging flux rope near a large sunspot, whose eruption produced an M-class flare and a coronal mass ejection. The presence of the small-scale flux rope was indicated by static nonlinear force-free field extrapolation as well as data-driven magnetohydrodynamics modeling of the dynamic evolution of the coronal three-dimensional magnetic field. During the emergence of the flux rope, rotation of satellite sunspots at the footpoints of the flux rope was observed. Meanwhile, the Lorentz force, magnetic energy, vertical current, and transverse fields were increasing during this phase. The free energy from the magnetic flux emergence and twisting magnetic fields is sufficient to power the M-class flare. These observations present, for the first time, the complete process, from the emergence of the small-scale flux rope, to the production of solar eruptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a detailed study of the formation of an inverse S-shaped filament prior to its eruption in active region NOAA 11884 from 2013 October 31 to November 2. In the initial stage, clockwise rotation of a small positive sunspot around the main negative trailing sunspot formed a curved filament. Then the small sunspot cancelled with the negative magnetic flux to create a longer active-region filament with an inverse S-shape. At the cancellation site a brightening was observed in UV and EUV images and bright material was transferred to the filament. Later the filament erupted after cancellation of two opposite polarities below the upper part of the filament. Nonlinear force-free field extrapolation of vector photospheric fields suggests that the filament may have a twisted structure, but this cannot be confirmed from the current observations. Transport and photoresponse properties of the heterostructure consisting of a Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 film and a Nb-SrTiO3 substrate were investigated. The Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 film exhibits semiconducting behavior and the resistances are decreased when irradiated by a 532 nm laser. The rectifying behaviors are observed in the heterostructure. The ideality factors and the diffusion voltages monotonically decrease with increasing the temperature. The photovoltatges of the heterostructure under the irradiation approach the saturation at about . The minority carrier lifetime of is estimated from the time response properties in the falling process of photovoltages. These results reveal that the Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 heterostructures have great potentials in photoresponse and photoelectric conversion applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
