31. Shear Instability and Turbulent Mixing by Kuroshio Intrusion Into the Changjiang River Plume.

Abstract

Shear instability is a dominant mechanism for mixing in the stratified oceans and coastal seas. For the first time, we present fine‐scale, direct measurements of shear instabilities in the bottom front generated by the Kuroshio intrusion into the Changjiang (Yangtze) river plume. Shear instabilities were identified using a shipboard echo‐sounder and the resulting turbulent mixing was quantified using a turbulence microstructure profiler. The shear instabilities generate vigorous turbulent mixing with dissipation rate and vertical diffusivity up to O (10−4 m2 s−3) and O (10−1 m2 s−1), respectively, comparable to values associated with shear instabilities observed in river plumes and western boundary currents but several orders of magnitude larger than typical values in the open ocean. The enhanced turbulence may contribute significantly to mixing between the Kuroshio water and coastal water and thereby alter the coastal biogeochemistry cycles. Plain Language Summary: Strong velocity shear across a density interface can produce instability, causing the interface to roll up to form a train of vortices ("billows") that subsequently break down into turbulence. This process is important in the vertical mixing of the oceanic interior and coastal seas. Using acoustic images, we find that this flow instability is induced by the interaction between the Kuroshio current and the Yangtze river plume. We also quantify the resulting turbulent mixing using high‐resolution measurements. The turbulence efficiently mixes the Kuroshio and river plume‐influence water and can change biogeochemistry cycles in the coastal seas. Abstract

AXL plays crucial roles in the tumorigenesis, progression, and drug resistance of neoplasms; however, the mechanisms associated with AXL overexpression in tumors remain largely unknown. In this study, to investigate these molecular mechanisms, wildtype and mutant proteins of arrestin domain-containing protein 3 (ARRDC3) and AXL were expressed, and co-immunoprecipitation analyses were performed. ARRDC3-deficient cells generated using the CRISPR-Cas9 system were treated with different concentrations of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor sunitinib and subjected to cell biological, molecular, and pharmacological experiments. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry was used to analyze the correlation between ARRDC3 and AXL protein expressions in renal cancer tissue specimens. The experimental results demonstrated that ARRDC3 interacts with AXL to promote AXL ubiquitination and degradation, followed by the negative regulation of downstream signaling mechanisms, including the phosphorylation of protein kinase B and extracellular signal-regulated kinase. Notably, ARRDC3 deficiency decreased the sunitinib sensitivity of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cells in a manner dependent on the regulation of AXL stability. Overall, our results suggest that ARRDC3 is a negative regulator of AXL and can serve as a novel predictor of sunitinib therapeutic response in patients with ccRCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Pearl River sediment dispersal over its associated delta–estuary–shelf system during the Holocene.

Abstract

To understand the Holocene sedimentary evolution of the Pearl River associated delta–estuary–shelf system, high‐resolution seismic data were acquired from Lingdingyang Bay to the inner shelf. A Pearl‐derived Holocene subaqueous clinoform developed over the pre‐Holocene incised channel/valley network. Overlying the Holocene ravinement surface, progradational highstand and acoustically semi‐transparent or transparent transgressive system tracts are separated by a maximum flooding surface. Restricted and thick in‐channel/in‐valley retrogressive deposits represent an earlier transgressive deposit. Displaying a westward‐oriented along‐shore extent, the highstand sediment accumulated asymmetrically within 30 m water depths, corresponding to a modern hydrodynamic environment. The wedge‐shaped highstand unit thickened landward with a depocentre (>15 m) located in western Lingdingyang Bay, possibly because of higher sediment trap efficiency inside the salinity front. Preliminary analyses suggest that the Pearl River has been trapping sediment to fill its extensive estuarine system for most of the Holocene and its sediment trap efficiency is greater since the sea‐level highstand. Since ca 7.5 ka bp, the total volume of highstand sediment accumulated in the entire delta‐estuary‐shelf dispersal system was approximately 128.36 × 109 m3. The calculated highstand riverine sediment flux was 16.01 to 16.50 Mt/yr. This value is equivalent to approximately one‐fifth of the flux that occurred prior to widespread dam construction and likely related to late‐Holocene intensified anthropogenic influence in South China. Since ca 7.5 ka bp, only ca 35% of the Pearl‐derived sediment has been dispersed to offshore shelf areas from the delta‐estuary system. With the dramatic decrease in river sediment discharge in recent decades, a larger fraction of Pearl‐derived sediment transported to the shelf might have been interrupted and changed.
