3. The COVID-19 pandemics and import demand elasticities: evidence from China’s customs data

Abstract

Abstract We study China’s import demand elasticities using HS 8-digit customs data on China’s provincial imports during January 2019 to March 2021. It is found that both direct bilateral exchange rate elasticity and third-country exchange rate elasticity are affected by (1) policies that these Asian economies adopted to alleviate the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) the degree of concentration of exporters exporting a certain product to a certain Chinese provincial market. It is found that economic support policies will lower the bilateral exchange rate elasticity of trade flows, or even alter the sign of the bilateral exchange rate elasticity of China’s imports. Besides, the economic support policies can alleviate the pressure of foreign competition on exporters and make the exporters more resilient to the impacts of foreign competitors’ exchange rate depreciation. In contrast, the degree of market concentration of exporters in a certain provincial market affects the exchange rate and the third-country exchange rate elasticity differently. A higher market concentration lowers the bilateral exchange rate elasticity of trade flows but magnifies the impact of foreign competitors’ currency depreciation on exporters. These results are robust to alternative modes of trade, regional heterogeneity, product heterogeneity, various measures of policy responses to the pandemic, and alternative database.

Abstract

This article recounts China's renminbi (RMB) internationalization experiences since the 2009 RMB cross-border trade settlement initiative. In the first few years, the RMB made inroads into global financial markets and had a few remarkable accomplishments, including the Special Drawing Right currency status. Since the 2015 market turmoil, RMB internationalization has levelled off - possibly due to changes in both domestic and geopolitical conditions. The RMB is currently under-represented in the global market compared with China's economic importance. China's deliberate and schematic policies will elevate the RMB's global stature in a gradual manner but there will not be a leapfrogging in the near term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Issues in debates about foreign currency exposure—the denomination of liabilities or assets in foreign currency.The foreign currency denomination of contracts in international transactions can lead to international currency exposure at the country level with important economic and policy implications. When debts are denominated in foreign currency and revenues in domestic currency, exchange rate fluctuations can result in balance sheet effects for countries with either net asset or liability positions. Moreover, currency mismatch between assets and liabilities can be a cause for crises in developing and emerging economies. This book looks at the issues surrounding foreign currency exposure in today's increasingly integrated world economy.The contributors draw on cross-country as well as country-specific data. They consider international currency risk after the Swiss franc ended its one-sided peg with the euro, for example, and the foreign exchange positions of firms in Turkey and Russia. Other contributors take macroeconomic perspectives, examining the potential effects of exchange rate realignment, the pressure to appreciate on countries with current account surpluses, and the currency exposure in international trade. 43. In vitro study of pharmacobezoar formation in simulated acetaminophen overdose.

Abstract

Objectives: There have been few studies of pharmacobezoar formation, but they can be an important contributor to overdose toxicity. Pharmacobezoars may explain the delayed peak or "double hump" pharmacokinetics, which were noted in previous case reports with delayed toxicity of acetaminophen (APAP). We validated the presence of APAP bezoar formation in a controlled modified in vitro environment simulating acute APAP overdose. Methods: This study involved the APAP and control groups (ferrous sulfate and chlorpheniramine). The APAP study group contained three subgroups of APAP with different dosage, i.e., 25 g (50 tabs)/37.5 g (75 tabs)/50 g (100 tabs). The positive control group containing ferrous sulfate, i.e., 15 g (50 tabs), has been reported previously to form pharmacobezoars in overdose. The negative control group containing chlorpheniramine, i.e., 200 mg (50 tabs), has not been reported to form pharmacobezoars in previous case studies. Tablets from each study group were placed into a separate pig stomach. Each stomach contained 28 ml USP standard simulated gastric acid. The stomach was placed in a plastic box filled with water maintaining at 37 °C. Each test group was examined for 4 h in the stomach. The primary outcome was the presence of clump formation. Positive clump formation was defined as tablets sticking together and the ability to maintain shape upon dissecting the pig stomach and lifting with fingers. Tablet clumps would then undergo dissolution testing with subsequent analysis of dissolution profiles. Results: Formation of tablets clumps was confirmed in APAP overdose in the in vitro environment. Clumps were noted to be present in the 37.5 g and 50 g APAP groups, while 25 g APAP was unlikely to form clumps. The dissolution profile of clump demonstrated slower release without reaching plateau at 60 min, as compared to corresponding individual tabs of APAP. f1 and f2 analyses showed the dissolution profile of clump was different compared to that of referenced individual tab. Conclusions: APAP clump formation was confirmed in acute overdose of 37.5 g or more. Dissolution tests revealed delayed and steady release of tablet residue from the clumps, which could explain prolonged or delayed toxicity in large APAP overdose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Over the past two decades, China's robust economic performance has propelled it to the world stage. At the same time, the world has increasingly scrutinized China's economic policies and activities. One of the hotly contested issues is China's foreign exchange rate policy. China's current reform and modernization policies to convert its centrally planned economy towards a market-driven one could hardly draw on experiences of other countries.This book provides a succinct and up-to-date account of China's exchange rate policy including the currency undervaluation debate and the internationalization of its currency. It begins with a brief history of the modern China's foreign exchange rate policy. In particular, it highlights the three Chinese policy characteristics; namely, independence, controllability and practicability, and graduality. This prologue helps to interpret China's policy on its currency, the renminbi (RMB); including its recent initiatives to promote the international use of its currency.The book covers the basic theoretical and empirical issues that are relevant for determining the equilibrium value of the RMB exchange rate and, hence, its degree of misalignment. Then it evaluates the controversy surrounding the RMB valuation debate, and highlights the sensitivity of empirical estimates of the degree of misalignment to alternative presumptions.The book also examines the timely issues related to China's recent efforts in promoting the use of its currency in the global financial market. After describing the background of China's recent efforts to internationalize the RMB, the book a) discusses the main promotional policies, including the recent Qianhai project and Shanghai Free Trade Zone initiative, b) evaluates the current status of the offshore RMB market, the level of international use of the RMB and the admission to the SDR basket, and c) assesses the future prospects of the RMB to be a global currency.

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd We study China's illicit capital flow and document a change in its pattern. Specifically, we observe that China's capital flight, especially the one measured by trade misinvoicing, exhibits a weakened response in the post-2007 period to the covered interest disparity, which is a theoretical determinant of capital flight. Further analyses indicate that the post-2007 behavior is influenced by quantitative easing and other factors including exchange rate variability, capital control policy and trade frictions. Our study confirms that China's capital flight pattern and its determinants are affected by the crisis event. Further, both the canonical and additional explanatory variables have different effects on different measures of capital flight. These results highlight the challenges of managing China's capital flight, which requires information on the period and the type of capital flight that the policy authorities would like to target.

Investigations of the propagation and influence of global shocks among the economies of developed and developing countries.One lens through which to view global economic interdependence and the spillover of shocks is that of decoupling (and then recoupling). Decoupling between developed and developing countries can be seen in the strong economic performance of China and India relative to that of the United States and Europe in the early 2000s. Recoupling then took place as developing countries sank along with the developed world during the deepening financial crisis of 2008. Abstract

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging pathogen that can cause microcephaly and other neurological defects in developing fetuses. The cellular response to ZIKV in the fetal brain is not well understood. Here, we show that ZIKV infection of human fetal astrocytes (HFAs), the most abundant cell type in the brain, results in elevated expression and secretion of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). This cytokine was shown to enhance replication and spread of ZIKV in HFAs and human fetal brain explants. The proviral effect of FGF2 is likely mediated in part by suppression of the interferon response, which would represent a novel mechanism by which viruses antagonize host antiviral defenses. We posit that FGF2-enhanced virus replication in the fetal brain contributes to the neurodevelopmental disorders associated with in utero ZIKV infection. As such, targeting FGF2-dependent signaling should be explored further as a strategy to limit replication of ZIKV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
