The paper presents a new hybrid wind turbine system that is formed by a continuously variable transmission connection of the turbine drive shaft with an air expander/compressor. A mechanical power split device is designed to synthesize the power delivered by the wind turbine\ud and the air expander/compressor. A small scale hybrid wind turbine system is mathematically modelled, analyzed and validated using a laboratory-scale experimental test rig. By utilizing compressed air energy storage it is shown that the hybrid wind turbine system can provide smooth power output under fluctuating wind speed conditions. Such a direct connection structure reduces the overall system cost by using one generator instead of two compared with the conventional\ud CAES system structure. The study demonstrates the benefit of\ud improved efficiency and flexibility brought to the turbine operation by the hybridization of wind energy and stored energy.\ud

Solar and wind energies are widely available in the Southeast Region of Turkey. Therefore, a province situated in the southeastern of Turkey can be autonomous and provide its needs from renewable energy resources. A study demonstrates that the electricity need of a small village located at a distance of four kilometers from Mardin is estimated at 5 kW. Supplying electricity with a Hybrid system was the main goal of this work. This system is constituted primarily by solar energy and wind energy and diesel generators when the consumption increases. The cost analysis of the hole system was done. As a first step, the setup cost of PV and wind turbine was calculated. Besides, it was compared with the cost of installing a line of the local electric network and it is concluded that the use of renewable energy sources cost less in short and long-Term uses. © 2016 IEEE.

In recent years, the combined application of wind generation and energy storage has received more and more attention around the world. Technically, wind generation systems including energy storage can offer many benefits, such as power oscillation damping, economic energy dispatch, voltage-frequency stabilization, and fault ride-through (FRT) capability enhancement. This special issue is to provide a platform for presenting the latest research results on wind generation systems including energy storage. This special issue compiles 8 original researches that describe the technical evaluation, economic performance, low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability, optimal capacity, numerical simulation, and experimental verification of wind generation systems including energy storage.There are three papers on the performance evaluation of wind generation systems. The paper by D. H. Didane et al. conducts the evaluation of wind energy potential as a power generation source in Chad, and a comprehensive wind database and wind map are presented. The paper by H.-K. Chen et al. studies the economic evaluation of three available solutions for promotion of wind power integration, and here the pumped hydrostorage (PHS), heat storage (HS), and electric boiler (EB) are selected to do a detailed comparison. From the given results, the HS requires the least investment and has good performance of coal-saving when accommodating the same amount of curtailed wind power. And the EB has the greatest potential for wind power integration with huge growth of installed capacity of wind power in the future. In the paper by M. Majidniya et al., enhancing the stability of the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) system is regarded as a research objective, and both of a pumped hydrostorage (PHS) and extra produced electricity are taken into account. The economic analysis of them is performed, and some preliminary discussions on the electricity price and the real interest rate are conducted. There are two papers on the transient characteristics of wind generation systems. The paper by X. Zhou et al. proposes the use of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) to improve the LVRT capability of the doubly fed induction generators- (DFIGs-) based wind turbine systems. The demonstrated results show that utilizing the SMES in the rotor side can help to produce a desired output voltage and absorb excess energy under faults, so as to enhance the robustness of wind power generation to a certain extent. In the paper by H. He et al., wind power is transmitted through a voltage source converter- (VSC-) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) system, and the researches on overvoltage calculation and insulation coordination are carried out. It is found that the most serious overvoltage is caused by the fault clearing of the DC breaker, and further the insulation coordination for the overhead lines is addressed in accordance with the calculated overvoltage level. In addition, the paper by X. Liu et al. investigates the optimal sizing for wind/PV/battery system by use of Fuzzy c-means clustering with self-adapted cluster number. Meanwhile, a feasible power balance strategy is introduced to guide the optimization process with the genetic algorithm, and the optimal configuration is established by considering the minimized cost, reliability, and environmental factors. Finally, there are two papers on the simulation and experiment of wind generation systems. The paper by J. M. Garcia-Bravo et al. presents the variable ratio hydrostatic transmission simulator for optimal wind power drivetrains. According to the simulation and experimental results, the electrical power output can be regulated further if an energy storage device is used to absorb voltage spikes produced by abrupt changes in wind speed or wind direction. In the paper by I. Marchevsky and V. Puzikova, a software package is developed for numerical simulation of wind turbine rotors autorotation, and the modified LS-STAG level-set/cut-cell immersed boundary method is used. From the simulation analyses, it is verified that the computational results are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data. Wind lens is a new type of wind power system consisting of a simple brimmed ring structure that surrounds the rotor causing greater wind to pass through the turbine. As a consequence, the turbine's efficiency of capturing energy from the wind gets dramatically increased. A Wind lens turbine can generate 2–5 times the power of an existing wind turbine given at the same rotor diameter and incoming wind speed. This fluid dynamical effect is also effective in the water. We have developed 1–3 kW Wind lens turbines and a 100 kW Wind lens turbine. In addition to the enhanced output power, Wind lens turbine is quiet. The technology is now used in an offshore experiment with a hexagonal float 18 meters in diameter set off the coast of Hakata Bay in Fukuoka City. Moreover, we are now pursuing larger size Wind lens turbines through multi-rotor design consisting of multiple Wind lens turbines in a same vertical plane to embody larger total power output.

Hydrogen energy is one of the favorite choice to alternative power generation around the world. Renewable energy is the best scope to produce alternative power. Because resources are available and doesn’t make any green house effect. In this reason to establish a renewable resources (solar, wind) based hybrid system with sea water electrolysis by Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for the production of Hydrogen. In this proposed system PV & Wind power use for sea water electrolysis and storage Hydrogen. To meet the peak load demand Gas Turbine Generator used to produce electricity using storage Hydrogen fuel. For design, optimization & peak load demand we have chosen Diabatic beach, Kolatoli Cox’s Bazar where wind flow, solar radiation and sea water are available.

Micro-scale/small wind turbines, unlike larger utility-scale turbines, produce electricity at a rate of 300 W to 10 kW at their rated wind speed and are typically below 30 m in hub-height. These wind turbines have much more flexibility in their costs, maintenance and siting, owing to their size, and can provided wind energy in areas much less suited for direct supply to the grid system. In the future under climate change, the energy landscape will likely shift from the present centralized electricity generation and delivery system to a more distributed and locally-generated electricity and delivery system. In the new system configuration, the role of relatively small sustainable electricity generators like small wind turbines will likely become more prominent. However, the small wind industry has been substantially slow to progress in Ontario, Canada, and there is much debate over its viability in a growing energy dependent economy. This study seeks to demonstrate the performance of a small wind turbine, and speculate on its potential power output and trend over Ontario historically over the last 33 years using the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) data. We assessed the efficiency of a Bergey Excel 1 kW wind turbine at the pre-established Kortright Centre for Conservation test site, located north of Toronto. Using a novel approach, the Bergey optimized power curve was incorporated with reanalysis data to establish power output across Ontario at three-hour resolution. Small turbine-based wind power around the Great Lakes and eastern James Bay increased during winter and fall, contributing up to 10% of the annual electricity demand in some regions in Ontario. We purport that increases in power output are driven by long-term reductions in sea and lake ice concentrations affecting atmospheric stability in surrounding regions.

Part 11: Renewable Energy; International audience; The increasing penetration of renewable energies in the electrical systems, particularly in small and isolated systems, like the case studied in this paper, Terceira Island in Azores, Portugal, creates challenges in the dispatch related to the variability and the difficulty to forecast the renewable resources. One way to deal with such issues is to use Water Pumping Storage Systems (WPSS) to regulate the system electricity production by storing energy surplus in low load periods and returning it back in high load periods, reducing at the same time the need to curtail wind. This paper describes and compares a deterministic and a metaheuristic methodology, using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), used to determine the best configuration of the WPSS in terms of number and unit power of pumps and turbines, and upper and lower reservoir capacity that lead to the best economic value, determined by the Net Present Value (NPV) of the investment.

Utility-scale Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) are increasingly employed with the rapid integration of wind energy to provide a more economic utilization of this renewable energy source. They can displace the low cost wind energy during off-peak periods to more expensive energy during peak periods. This paper develops an AC Optimal Power Flow (OPF) model with the incorporation of ESSs to examine its combined operation with wind generation in a system with multi-site wind farms. We illustrate the operation of ESSs and wind with several tests on modified IEEE 57-bus and 118-bus systems taking into account the correlation of wind between different sites.

The penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources, for instances wind power, in the power system of isolated islands is limited, even when there is large potential. The wind power that cannot be directly injected in the power grid is usually curtailed. In addition, some islands need to desalinate seawater to produce fresh water, increasing the pressure on the power system, because desalination needs electricity. Nevertheless, the water scarcity problem of an island can be part of the solution of the problem of its integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. To tackle this issue, a system was proposed to use the excess wind power in desalination units and in a pumped hydro storage, resulting in an integrated power and water supply system that would minimize the wind power curtailed. This paper proposes a methodology to optimize the size and operational strategy of this wind powered desalination and pumped hydro storage system. The objective is to minimize the total annualized production costs, maximize the percentage of renewable energy sources in the total power production and minimize the wind power curtailed. To solve this optimization problem, a derivative free multiobjective optimization method (Direct MultiSearch) is used. This methodology is applied to the integrated power and water supply system proposed for the island of S. Vicente, in Cape Verde. The results show that the penetration of renewable energy sources can reach 84% with a 27% decrease of power and water production costs and 67% decrease of CO2 emissions, in relation to the values foreseen for 2020.

This paper examines the options and benefits of hydrogen utilization in various segments of the wind energy market. A parametric analysis is done to determine the feasibility and optimal size of wind farms and an electrolysis system producing hydrogen to be distributed via several means including the natural gas pipeline grid. This paper examines the wind farms available in Southern Ontario, Canada. Infrastructure requirements, wind farm size, pipeline capacity, geographical dispersion, cost and hydrogen production rate are used as performance measures throughout the study. The results indicate the feasibility and economic factors of the size of wind farms, electrolysis systems and production rates of hydrogen that can utilized for a community vehicle fleet fuelling, industrial demand, natural gas augmentation and stored energy applications. “Straw man” systems are examined, centered on a wind farm size of 100 MW integrating a 16 MW capacity electrolysis system producing 4,700 kg of hydrogen per day.

We present the design and analysis of augmentation channels to increase the efficiency of shrouded marine current turbines in conditions of low intensity flows. These turbines are part of a prototype of a floating device composed of wind and marine current generators for generating renewable energy. It intends to exploit renewable energy resources in an integrated manner using wind and current turbines in offshore plants optimizing the economic investment.

Onshore wind farms can now be regarded as a mature technology, capable of providing increasing levels of clean energy. The development of offshore wind technology will provide the ability to harness much larger wind energy resource. Offshore wind arrays present many new challenges including the electrical power system which provides the internal collection system and the connection to the on-shore power network. For remote offshore wind farms, high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission will be required to transmit power from the wind farm to the shore. The use of HVDC has the effect of decoupling the wind farms internal collection network from the rest of the power grid, thereby removing the requirement for a conventional alternating current (AC) network. This paper discusses the use of a direct current (DC) collection system for offshore wind farms, with particulars emphasis of DC-DC converter requirements. The proposed converter is validated by the simulation model and the performances e.g. switching losses, conduction losses are investigated.

This article describes the assessment of future wind power utilization for charging electric vehicles (EVs) in Germany. The potential wind power production in the model years 2020 and 2030 is derived by extrapolating onshore wind power generation and offshore wind speeds measured in 2007 and 2010 to the installed onshore and offshore wind turbine capacities assumed for 2020 and 2030. The energy consumption of an assumed fleet of 1 million EVs in 2020 and 6 million in 2030 is assessed using detailed models of electric vehicles, real world driving cycles and car usage. It is shown that a substantial part of the charging demand of EVs can be met by otherwise unused wind power, depending on the amount of conventional power required for stabilizing the grid. The utilization of wind power is limited by the charging demand of the cars and the bottlenecks in the transmission grid.

This article investigates the possibility of providing electricity from solar/wind hybrid systems for a remote location with no electricity connection in the city of Edirne in the westernmost province of Turkey in order to decrease the high cost of utilizing only stand-alone diesel system and to achieve considerable fuel savings. In this study, National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables) software is used to perform the techno-economic feasibility of such hybrid systems considering both solar data and wind data. Additionally, the contribution of solar and wind on energy production, cost of energy, and total operating hours of diesel generator is examined for the optimal hybrid configurations. Furthermore, fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions of different hybrid systems are investigated. Finally, suitability of utilizing hybrid solarwind energy system over stand-alone diesel system is discussed mainly based on different solar global irradiances, wind speed, and diesel price.

In this paper wind energy to thermal and cold storage scenarios was examined to enable high wind integration through converting renewable electricity excess into thermal or cooling energy, saving part of the energy used in an area and eliminating the need to possibly build a new coal fired plant. Case studies in Crete Island (not interconnected to the power grid of Greek mainland) with onshore wind power installed were investigated. The aim of this work was to review the options for greater integration of renewables into the grid and the main idea was to analyze the wind to thermal and to cold storage according to the needs of two small municipalities.

A challenge in Denmark in the near future isto balance the electrical grid due to a large increase in therenewable energy production mainly from wind turbines. Inthis work an aggregated control system using heat pumps insingle family houses to help balancing the grid is investigated.The control system is able to adjust the consumptions of theheat pump without affecting the comfort in the houses and usesthis ability to shift the total consumption to hours with highwind energy production.

The economic efficiency of harnessing wind energy in the autonomous power systems of Russia is analyzed. Wind turbines are shown to be competitive for many considered variants (groups of consumers, placement areas, and climatic and meteorological conditions). The authors study the possibility of storing energy in the form of hydrogen in the autonomous wind/diesel/hydrogen power systems that include wind turbines, diesel generator, electrolyzer, hydrogen tank, and fuel cells. The paper presents the zones of economic efficiency of the system (set of parameters that provide its competitiveness) depending on load, fuel price, and long-term average annual wind speed. At low wind speed and low price of fuel, it is reasonable to use only diesel generator to supply power to consumers. When the fuel price and wind speed increase, first it becomes more economical to use a wind-diesel system and then wind turbines with a hydrogen system. In the latter case, according to the optimization results, diesel generator is excluded from the system.

The present article analyses the potential contribution of a hybrid energy system in a scenario with a high deployment of wind farms. The hybrid energy system consists of a small/mediumsized nuclear reactor (SMR), a biomass processing plant and an optional hydrogen production plant. The SMR operates at full power constantly and is able to switch its thermal output to supply steam for electricity generation or to supply the biomass production plant for heat processes. The hybrid energy system management is electricity load following, so the sum of the electricity generated by both the hybrid energy system and the aggregated wind farm tends to meet electricity demand. The hydrogen production plant is considered as an electricity consumer and operates during times of wind power surplus. Wind farm capacities of 100-2000 MW were investigated. For these, the optimal SMR size in the hybrid energy system varies from 200 to 300 MWe. The increase in SMR size is limited due to the maximum heat demand for the biomass processing plant, which is 1033 GWhth annually (expected heat for biomass processing within a radius of 80 km). For a 1000 MW wind farm, the (standard) deviations between wind farm output and demand are reduced by 32 percentage points with the aid of the hybrid energy system without the hydrogen production plant. An additional reduction of 30 percentage points is achieved using the hydrogen plant, but this then has a very low utilisation (15%)., JRC.F.6-Energy systems evaluation

The amount of wind power and other timevariable non-dispatchable renewable energy sources (RES) is rapidly increasing in the world. A few power systems are already facing very high penetrations from variable renewables which can surpass the systems' consumption during no-load periods, requiring the energy excess to be curtailed, exported or stored. The limitations of electric energy storage naturally lead to the selection of the well-known form of storing potential energy in reservoirs of reversible hydropower stations, although other technologies such as heat storage are also being used successfully. This paper reviews the storage technologies that are available and may be used on a power system scale and compares their advantages and disadvantages for the integration of fast-growing renewables, such as wind power, with a special focus on the role of pumped hydro storage.

In recent years, wind energy is the fastest growing clean and renewable energy source in the world. However, most of the wind farm development has been limited to the land space and shallow water regions. Recently, several European countries (including Spain), USA and Japan started to plan floating offshore wind farms. In June of 2009, the first floating offshore wind turbine (Hywind) of the world was installed by Statoil-Hydro and Siemens on the coast of Karmøy, near the port of Bergen, Norway. In general, floating offshore wind farms are considered to be more difficult to design and install. However, in deep waters they are less sensitive to the space availability, noise restriction, and visual pollution, among others. Moreover, the wind power generation is more effective due to that floating offshore wind farm are exposed to a much stronger and steadier wind field.

In Turkey, where there is no nuclear power, electricity is generated from the thermal, hydro, wind and geothermal power plants. While the installed capacity of Turkey's electric power plants was 4,187 MW in 1975, it increased to 40,777 MW in 2007. For the total installed capacity of 40,777 MW, the share of wind power plants is only 0.36%. On the other hand, Turkey has the highest share of technical wind energy potential in Europe. It is estimated that Turkey's technical wind energy potential is around 83,000 MW; the economica potential is approximately 10,000 MW. But, by the end of November 2008, the installed wind capacity of Turkey was only 3.33% of Turkey's total economical wind potential. The strong development of wind energy in Turkey is expected to continue in the coming years. This paper examines the operation of the Irish power system with very high levels of wind energy, with and without pumped storage. A unit commitment model which accounts for the uncertainty in wind power is used. It is shown that as wind penetration increases, the optimal operation of storage depends on wind output as well as load. The main benefit from storage is shown to be a decrease in wind curtailment. The economics of the system are examined to find the level at which storage justifies its capital costs and inefficiencies. It is shown that the uncertainty of wind makes the option of storage more attractive. The size of the energy store has an impact on results. At lower levels of installed wind (up to approximately 50% of energy from wind in Ireland), the reduction in curtailment is insufficient to justify building storage. At greater levels of wind, storage reduces curtailment sufficiently to justify the additional capital costs. It can be seen that if storage replaces OCGTs in the plant mix instead of CCGTs, then the level at which it justifies itself is lower. WOS: 000277508200004, In this study, using the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program (WAsP) software the wind statistics and energy calculations are performed for Eskisehir region. Suitable sites to locate wind turbines optimally are selected according to the created wind power and wind speed maps. Eighteen different wind turbines with nominal powers between 200 and 2,000 kW are established for annual energy production calculations and the best-fitted three types of turbines of which capacity factors are bigger than 30% are used for the micrositting. Wind farms with a total of 20 wind turbines each are built in three different suitable locations by using each selected type of wind turbines. Furthermore, the energy productions of the wind farms are calculated.

Some of the major limitations of renewable energy sources are represented by their low power density and intermittent nature, largely depending upon local site and unpredictable weather conditions. These problems concur to increase the unit costs of wind power, so limiting their diffusion. By coupling storage systems with a wind farm, some of the major limitations of wind power, such as a low power density and an unpredictable nature, can be overcome.After an overview on storage systems, the Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) is analyzed, and the state of art on such systems is discussed. A Matlab/Simulink model of a hybrid power plant consisting of a wind farm coupled with CAES is then presented. We develop a nonlinear mathematical optimization program for investigating the economic and environmental implications of wind penetration in electrical grids and evaluating how hydropower storage could be used to offset wind power intermittence. When wind power is added to an electrical grid consisting of thermal and hydropower plants, it increases system variability and results in a need for additional peak-load, gas-fired generators. Our empirical application using load data for Alberta's electrical grid shows that costs of wind-generated electricity vary from $37 per MWh to $68/MWh, and depend primarily on the wind profiles of installed turbines. Costs of reducing CO2 emissions are estimated to be $41–$56 per t CO2. When pumped hydro storage is introduced in the system or the capacity of the water reservoirs is enhanced, the hydropower facility could provide most of the peak load requirements obviating the need to build large peak-load gas generators.

A model of a Hybrid Power Plant (HPP) consisting of Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) coupled with a wind farm is presented. This kind of plant aims at overcoming some of the major limitations of wind-generated power plants, including low power density and an intermittent nature owing to variable weather conditions. In CAES, energy is stored in the form of compressed air in a reservoir during off-peak periods and used on demand during peak periods to generate power with a turbo-generator system. Such plants can offer significant benefits in terms of flexibility in matching a fluctuating power demand, particularly when coupled with wind turbines. For the hybrid power plant considered in this study, results show that advantages in terms of economics, energy savings and CO2 mitigation can be achieved.Copyright © 2006 by ASME

With respect to energy production, most of the islands depend on importation, mainly from oil and its related products, while other islands rely on usually weak electricity grid connection to the mainland. In some cases, there is no way to link the islands to continental European energy networks, making difficult the implementation of the solutions to reduce environmental costs, while at the same time increasing the security of supply to the level necessary to maintain the quality of life and competitiveness of island economies. Due to high energy costs the islands are proving to be excellent test beds for introduction of new technologies, and some islands are trying to become so called renewable islands, to satisfy their energy demand mainly or entirely from indigenous and renewable sources, thus increasing the security of supply, and employment opportunities, without necessarily increasing the costs. Islands that have energy sources like hydro or geothermal can easily integrate them into the power system, but those with mainly intermittent renewable energy sources are confronted with the necessity of energy storage. The most promising technologies are reversible hydro, where geography allows, and storing hydrogen where it does not. Also, in order to increase the efficiencies of the supply systems of electricity, water and transport fuel, these could be analysed in an integrated approach. This paper describes the H2RES model for optimisation of integration of hydrogen usage with intermittent renewable energy sources on the example of an isolated island in Madeira archipelago, Porto Santo. It shows that it is possible to significantly increase the penetration of renewable energy sources, albeit at a relatively high cost, with hydrogen storage technology.

The onshore wind energy resource potential in Juangsu province was evaluat ed by annual wind power density and hours of effective wind speed, based on meteorological data from 1979 to 2008. Vestas V80-2.0MW (Megawatt) turbine was chosen as the reference wind turbine and wind-generated power potential was assessed from seasonal wind speed at 80m heights. Further, the Geographic Information System (GIS) software was used to exclude those unsuitable areas for installing wind turbines. Results show that Jiangsu has abundant wind energy resource, which is gradually increasing from the coast to the inland. The annual power production from the wind reaches 146 336 gigawatt-hours (GWh) or so in Jiangsu province, with Yancheng and Nantong along coast being two of the richest.

Wind turbines are traditionally used to generate electrical energy. However for small, remote applications a wind turbine can also be used to convert wind power into thermal power in order to reduce the cost of energy used for heating sys-tems. The wind heat generator is based on the principle of the Joule machine driven by a wind turbine. To obtain optimal per-formance the torque-speed characteristics of the turbine and the heat generator should be matched. By recognising this require-ment the model of a wind heat generator was developed and simu-lated. The result of the simulation shows the behavior of the wind heat generator operating at maximum power.

Summarization: This paper examines the effect of different wind turbine classes on the electricity production of wind farms in two areas of Cyprus Island, which present low and medium wind potentials: Xylofagou and Limassol. Wind turbine classes determine the suitability of installing a wind turbine in a particulate site. Wind turbine data from five different manufacturers have been used. For each manufacturer, two wind turbines with identical rated power (in the range of 1.5 MW–3 MW) and different wind turbine classes (IEC II and IEC III) are compared. The results show the superiority of wind turbines that are designed for lower wind speeds (IEC III class) in both locations, in terms of energy production. This improvement is higher for the location with the lower wind potential and starts from 7%, while it can reach more than 50%. Presented on: Conference Papers in Energy
