Signatures are crucial in blockchain-based Decentralised Finance (DeFi) protocols because they ensure the security and integrity of transactions and smart contracts. Due to the weakness in the signature scheme, it is possible to carry out a malleability attack (MA) by changing the transaction ID (TxId) without affecting the transaction’s actual content or validity. Currently, signature systems can only resist partial malleability attacks from multiple attack paths. This paper proposes an advanced multi-signature scheme (MSS) as a supplementary signature that integrates unmalleable transaction implementations. In MSS, the owners and block producers themselves generate the signature. MSS improves transaction efficiency by allowing many signers to establish a joint signature, which has piqued interest. Despite the method’s complexity and time-consuming nature, this research has adapted MSS to the blockchain to safeguard against malleability attacks. By integrating it with several other optimisations, such as executing intermediate transactions using a hash function, MSS ensures complete resistance against malleability attacks. In comparison to baseline approaches, testbed simulations demonstrate scalability and 15% higher resistance against malleability attack success.

Fly ash with low glass content is often prohibited from use in concrete due to the low reactivity and/or the inclusion of contaminants. However, the scarcity of high-quality fly ash promotes the evaluation of the feasibility of using fly ash with low glass content (e.g., low-grade fly ash) in concrete. This study proposes a decoupling method to quantitatively estimate the degree of reaction of fly ash with extremely low glass content, which partially replaces cement, and the degree of hydration of the hosting cement, simultaneously. The estimation is derived from the contents of calcium hydroxide and chemically bonded water in hydrated binary cement pastes, which can be determined by thermogravimetric analysis-based experiments and theoretically validated stoichiometric parameters. The results exhibit that the fly ash tends to retard the early-age hydration of cement but promotes its later-age hydration, resulting in a higher ultimate degree of reaction of cement than the reference paste. The microstructural and porosity evaluation shows that the fly ash, though has relatively low degrees of reaction due to its low glass content, can result in a more tortuous pore network of the hydrated pastes, which could be potentially more resistant to the penetration of water and aggressive chemicals.

Abstract Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia-associated pulmonary hypertension (BPD-PH) remains a devastating clinical complication seriously affecting the therapeutic outcome of preterm infants. Hence, early prevention and timely diagnosis prior to pathological change is the key to reducing morbidity and improving prognosis. Our primary objective is to utilize machine learning techniques to build predictive models that could accurately identify BPD infants at risk of developing PH. Methods The data utilized in this study were collected from neonatology departments of four tertiary-level hospitals in China. To address the issue of imbalanced data, oversampling algorithms synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) was applied to improve the model. Results Seven hundred sixty one clinical records were collected in our study. Following data pre-processing and feature selection, 5 of the 46 features were used to build models, including duration of invasive respiratory support (day), the severity of BPD, ventilator-associated pneumonia, pulmonary hemorrhage, and early-onset PH. Four machine learning models were applied to predictive learning, and after comprehensive selection a model was ultimately selected. The model achieved 93.8% sensitivity, 85.0% accuracy, and 0.933 AUC. A score of the logistic regression formula greater than 0 was identified as a warning sign of BPD-PH. Conclusions We comprehensively compared different machine learning models and ultimately obtained a good prognosis model which was sufficient to support pediatric clinicians to make early diagnosis and formulate a better treatment plan for pediatric patients with BPD-PH.

Abstract Background Within China, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains widely prevalent and one of the major public health problems. There have been only two previous estimates of its prevalence at the population level in China, with the latest survey conducted in 2006. A meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of HBV within China between 2013 and 2017 as 7%. This review provides an updated estimate of HBV prevalence in China from 2018 to 2022. Methods Systematic searches of literature from January 1, 2018 to December 25, 2022 were conducted in four international databases (Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) and three Chinese databases (CNKI, CBM, and WanFang data). Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to calculate the pooled HBV prevalence with 95% confidence intervals in the overall population and subgroups. Publication bias, heterogeneity between studies, and study quality were assessed. Results Twenty-five articles were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of HBV infection in the Chinese general population from 2018 to 2022 was 3% (95%CI: 2–4%). The prevalence of HBV infection was similar between males and females (both 3%), while rural areas had a higher prevalence than urban areas (3% vs 2%). Abstract Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) are amphibians with high economic value, but in recent years, bullfrog farming has encountered serious threats of bacterial diseases, and the “bullfrog economy” is facing a continuous decline. In this study, the dominant strain was isolated from diseased bullfrogs in a bullfrog farm in Nanning, Guangxi, and based on its morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics and analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, the strain was identified as a non-O1/O139 group Vibrio cholerae and named TC1. Three virulence factors were identified in this strain, including hemolysin, outer membrane protein, and toxin-coregulated pili. Drug susceptibility testing showed that the strain resisted gentamicin, florfenicol, nitrofural, oxytetracycline, neomycin, penicillin, amoxicillin, doxycycline, and sulfamonomethoxine. The results of artificial infection experiments showed that TC1 caused serious pathologies such as abdominal swelling and anal prolapse in bullfrogs, especially severe intestinal bleeding. Histopathological observations revealed that the bullfrog intestine exhibited obvious pathological lesions. These results provide an essential epidemiological basis for controlling V. cholerae infections in aquatic animals and demonstrate the promise of bullfrogs as an amphibian model for studying the pathogenesis of V. cholerae.

Skin microbiota play an important role in skin barrier function and are associated with host health. The study of the skin microbiota is beneficial for managing disease with skin microbiota. Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) is an important cultured animal. Bacterial diseases like red leg syndrome (RLS) often occur in bullfrog cultured and cause huge economic losses around the world. However, the appearance of RLS is unknown. Here we compare the skin microbiota of RLS bullfrog and healthy bullfrog by 16 S rRNA microbiome profiles. The bacterial community diversity of bullfrog skin was significantly different between RLS and healthy group. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla in bullfrog skin. Compared with healthy bullfrogs, RLS bullfrogs had high abundance of Acinetobacter, Chryseobacterium, Elizabethkingia, Flavobacterium and Streptococcus in skin microbiota, but the relative abundance of Cetobacterium, Bacteroides and Shewanella was overrepresented in the RLS bullfrog. The Tax4Fun function prediction showed that the relative abundance of genes associated with Nucleotide metabolism, Translation, Nucleotide metabolism, Translation, Glycan biosynthesis and metabolism exhibited was significantly higher in RLS bullfrogs. The results suggested that the RLS significantly changed the composition and predictive function of the skin bacterial community in cultured bullfrogs. This study is the first to report on the relationship between skin microbiota and red leg syndrome of bullfrog, which can expand our understanding of bacterial communities in bullfrog farming from the perspective of microbial ecology and help prevent and manage RLS in bullfrog farming.

IntroductionThe bacterium Elizabethkingia miricola is a multispecies pathogen associated with meningitis-like disease that has been isolated from several amphibian species, including the bullfrog, but this is the first isolation in Guangxi. In the present study, the dominant bacteria were isolated from the brains of five bullfrogs with meningitis-like disease on a South China farm in Guangxi.MethodsThe NFEM01 isolate was identified by Gram staining; morphological observations; 16S rRNA, rpoB, and mutT-based phylogenetic tree analysis; and physiochemical characterization and was subjected to drug sensitivity and artificial infection testing.Results and discussionAs a result of identification, the NFEM01 strain was found to be E. miricola. An artificial infection experiment revealed that NFEM01 infected bullfrogs and could cause symptoms of typical meningitis-like disease. As a result of the bacterial drug sensitivity test, NFEM01 is highly sensitive to mequindox, rifampicin, enrofloxacin, nitrofural, and oxytetracycline and there was strong resistance to gentamicin, florfenicol, neomycin, penicillin, amoxicillin, doxycycline, and sulfamonomethoxine. This study provides a reference to further study the pathogenesis mechanism of E. miricola-induced bullfrog meningitislike disease and its prevention and treatment.

A bio-inspired, plant-derived polyphenol, tannic acid (TA) was identified as a renewable admixture to improve the compressive strength of concretes. Aiming to understand the underlying mechanism responsible for this strength improvement, this study examines how TA mediates the hydration of tricalcium silicate (alite). Experimental study shows that TA can form complex with calcium ions through chelating, retarding the hydration of the alite and changing of the hydration products. Particularly, X-ray diffraction analysis shows that TA makes calcium hydroxide preferentially grow on the [001] face. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 29Si MAS NMR results reveal that the mean chain length of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) is reduced by TA. More importantly, mercury intrusion porosimetry testing reveals that pores with size near 30 nm was almost eliminated by adding TA, leading to higher elastic modulus of the produced CSH and higher compressive strength of the produced concrete.

Background: Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is a serine-glycine-one-carbon metabolic enzyme in which SHMT1 and SHMT2 encode the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial isoenzymes, respectively. SHMT1 and SHMT2 are key players in cancer metabolic reprogramming, and thus are attractive targets for cancer therapy. However, the role of SHMT in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has not been fully elucidated. We aimed to systematically analyze the expression, gene regulatory network, prognostic value, and target prediction of SHMT1 and SHMT2 in patients with kidney chromophobe (KICH), kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma (KIRP); elucidate the association between SHMT expression and RCC; and identify potential new targets for clinical RCC treatment. Methods: Several online databases were used for the analysis, including cBioPortal, TRRUST, GeneMANIA, GEPIA, Metascape, UALCAN, LinkedOmics, and TIMER. Results: SHMT1 and SHMT2 transcript levels were significantly down- and upregulated, respectively, in patients with KICH, KIRC, and KIRP, based on sample type, individual cancer stage, sex, and patient age. Compared to men, women with KIRC and KIRP showed significantly up- and downregulated SHMT1 transcript levels, respectively. However, SHMT2 transcript levels were significantly upregulated in the patients mentioned above. KIRC and KIRP patients with high SHMT1 expression had longer survival periods than those with low SHMT1 expression. In patients with KIRC, the findings were similar to those mentioned above. However, in KICH patients, the findings were the opposite regarding SHMT2 expression. SHMT1 versus SHMT2 were altered by 9% versus 3% (n = 66 KICH patients), 4% versus 4% (n = 446 KIRC patients), and 6% versus 7% (n = 280 KIRP patients). SHMT1 versus SHMT2 promoter methylation levels were significantly up- and downregulated in patients with KIRP versus KIRC and KIRP, respectively. SHMT1, SHMT2, and their neighboring genes (NG) formed a complex network of interactions. The molecular functions of SHMT1 and its NG in patients with KICH, KIRC, and KIRP, included clathrin adaptor, metalloendopeptidase, and GTPase regulator activities; lipid binding, active transmembrane transporter activity, and lipid transporter activity; and type I interferon receptor binding, integrin binding, and protein heterodimerization, respectively. Their respective Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways were involved in lysosome activity, human immunodeficiency virus 1 infection, and endocytosis; coronavirus disease 2019 and neurodegeneration pathways (multiple diseases); and RIG-I-like receptor signaling pathway, cell cycle, and actin cytoskeleton regulation. The molecular functions of SHMT2 and its NG in patients with KICH, KIRC, and KIRP included cell adhesion molecule binding and phospholipid binding; protein domain-specific binding, enzyme inhibitor activity, and endopeptidase activity; and hormone activity, integrin binding, and protein kinase regulator activity, respectively. For patients with KIRC versus KIRP, the KEGG pathways were involved in cAMP and calcium signaling pathways versus microRNAs (MiRNAs) in cancer cells and neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions, respectively. We identified the key transcription factors of SHMT1 and its NG. Conclusions: SHMT1 and SHMT2 expression levels were different in patients with RCC. SHMT1 and SHMT2 may be potential therapeutic and prognostic biomarkers in these patients. Transcription factor (MYC, STAT1, PPARG, AR, SREBF2, and SP3) and miRNA (miR-17-5P, miR-422, miR-492, miR-137, miR-30A-3P, and miR-493) regulations may be important strategies for RCC treatment.

Aquaculture offers a promising source of economic and healthy protein for human consumption, which can improve wellbeing. Viral diseases are the most serious type of diseases affecting aquatic animals and a major obstacle to the development of the aquaculture industry. In the background of antibiotic-free farming, the development and application of antibiotic alternatives has become one of the most important issues in aquaculture. In recent years, many medicinal plants and their active pharmaceutical ingredients have been found to be effective in the treatment and prevention of viral diseases in aquatic animals. Compared with chemical drugs and antibiotics, medicinal plants have fewer side-effects, produce little drug resistance, and exhibit low toxicity to the water environment. Most medicinal plants can effectively improve the growth performance of aquatic animals; thus, they are becoming increasingly valued and widely used in aquaculture. The present review summarizes the promising antiviral activities of medicinal plants and their active pharmaceutical ingredients against aquatic viruses. Furthermore, it also explains their possible mechanisms of action and possible implications in the prevention or treatment of viral diseases in aquaculture. This article could lay the foundation for the future development of harmless drugs for the prevention and control of viral disease outbreaks in aquaculture.

Determination of degrees of hydration/reaction of components of blended cementitious systems (i. e., cement and SCMs: supplementary cementitious materials) is essential to estimate the systems' properties. Although the best methods for determining degrees of reaction of different SCMs have been recommended by RILEM TC238, they rely on either expensive equipment (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance) or time-consuming sample preparation and data processing (e.g., backscattered electron image analysis). Furthermore, these methods cannot simultaneously characterize degree of hydration of cement and degree of reaction of SCMs. A novel decoupling method, which can simultaneously estimate the degree of hydration of cement and the degree of reaction of silica fume in binary cementitious materials, is proposed in this study. Based on experimentally determined and theoretically validated stoichiometric parameters of cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction, the contents of calcium hydroxide and hydrate water in pastes are expressed as functions of degree of hydration of cement and degree of reaction of silica fume. With the two contents determined by thermogravimetric analysis, the two degrees can be solved mathematically. It is found that in binary binders the incorporation of silica fume affects hydration kinetics of cement, leading to lower ultimate degree of hydration, shorter dormant stage, and faster hydration in the acceleration stage. As a result, the degree of hydration of cement in blended paste is higher at early ages (e.g., 3 days) but lower at later ages (e.g., 120 days) than that in plain cement paste. In a given blended paste, the degree of reaction of silica fume can be tied to the degree of hydration of cement. The decoupling method is promising for rapid estimations of degrees of hydration/reaction of cementitious materials in a blended system, since it does not require expensive characterization tools or complex data processing methods.

Back pain is a common clinical symptom. Degeneration of intervertebral discs is one of the most important factors leading to back pain, namely, discogenic back pain. However, at present, the understanding of lumbar intervertebral discs causing back pain is confined to biomechanical and histological studies. The neuropathological mechanism related to discogenic back pain is still not well understood. Many studies have found that as an intervertebral disc degenerates, the peripheral nerve tissues have corresponding structural reorganization, and a series of nerve cells become involved in progression of discogenic back pain. Therefore, study of neural mechanisms that are involved in progression of discogenic back pain will provide additional assistance for treatment of its symptoms. We review the anatomical structure of intervertebral discs and the related neural mechanisms involved in discogenic back pain. We also discuss the current view of neural mechanisms underlying discogenic back pain.

This study determined the resistance to five different insecticides, and assessed the change in enzymes in three Myzus persicae populations in Liuyang, Guiyang, and Longshan tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)-growing areas in Hunan province, China. The activities of the detoxification, protective, and digestive enzymes were determined using biochemical analysis. Results indicated that the Liuyang population had high resistance to Imidacloprid, and moderate resistance to Aacetamiprid and Cyhalothrin. The Longshan population showed low resistance to Phoxim, while the Liuyang and Guiyang populations both exhibited reduced susceptibility. All three populations exhibited reduced susceptibility to Methomyl. Field populations exhibited higher activity of detoxification enzymes [acetylcholinesterase (AchE), carboxylesterase (CarE), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and mixed-function oxidase (MFO)], protective enzymes (superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT], and peroxidase [POD]), and digestive enzymes (amylase [AMS]) than the susceptible population. The Liuyang population showed the highest detoxification, protective, and digestive enzyme activity of all aphid populations. The AchE activity and resistance level to acetamiprid was significantly, positively correlated. The CarE, CAT, and AMS activity and resistance to Imidacloprid were also significantly, positively correlated. The correlation between enzyme activity and resistance to methomyl was negative, except for AchE. When CarE, CAT, and AMS activity was up to 60, aphids exhibited low resistance to Imidacloprid, and when AchE activity was up to 90, aphids exhibited medium resistance to Imidacloprid. These results provide the theoretical basis for predicting regional resistance of M. persicae to Imidacloprid and Acetamiprid, which can be used to delay evolution of resistance of M. persicae to insecticides in the field. One of the most efficient and environmentally friendly methods for preventing a landslide on a slope is to vegetate it. Vegetation-pervious concretes have a promising potential for soil protection. In this study, the vegetation-pervious concrete with low alkalinity was developed and studied. Combined with a grid beam structure system, the stability and strength between the vegetation-pervious concrete and base soil are believed to be enhanced effectively. For improving plant adaptability, the alkalinity of concrete can be decreased innovatively by adding a self-designed admixture into the cement paste. The effects of the admixture content on alkalinity and compressive strength of the hardened pervious concrete were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and compression test, respectively. Meanwhile, the permeability of the vegetation-pervious concrete was studied as well. Through comparing with ordinary pervious concrete, the effect of low alkaline pervious concrete on vegetation growth was investigated in a small-scale field for ten weeks. The test results indicated that the alkalinity of the cement samples decreased with the increase of admixture content, and the vegetation grew successfully on previous concrete. By increasing the admixture content to approximately 3.6%, the compressive strength of pervious concrete was more than 25 MPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, we focused on the development of composite phase-change materials (CPCMs) by incorporation of a paraffin through vacuum impregnation in widely used building materials (Kaolin and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS)). The composite PCMs were characterized using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Moreover, thermal performance of cement paste composite PCM panels was evaluated using a self-designed heating system. Test results showed that the maximum percentage of paraffin retained by Kaolin and GGBS was found to be 18% and 9%, respectively. FT-IR results show that CPCMs are chemically compatible. The phase-change temperatures of CPCMs were in the human comfort zone, and they possessed considerable latent-heat storage capacity. TGA results showed that CPCMs are thermally stable, and they did not show any sign of degradation below 150 °C. From thermal cycling tests, it was revealed that the CPCMs are thermally reliable. Thermal performance tests showed that in comparison to the control room model, the room models prepared with CPCMs reduced both the temperature fluctuations and maximum indoor center temperature. In this research, structural-functional integrated cement-based materials were prepared by employing cement paste and a microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) manufactured using urea-formaldehyde resin as the shell and paraffin as the core material. The encapsulation ratio of the MPCM could reach up to 91.21 wt%. Thermal energy storage cement pastes (TESCPs) incorporated with different MPCM contents (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight of cement) were developed, and their thermal and mechanical properties were studied. The results showed that the total energy storage capacity of the hardened cement specimens with MPCM increased by up to 3.9-times compared with that of the control cement paste. The thermal conductivity at different temperature levels (35-36 °C, 55-56 °C and 72-74 °C) decreased with the increase of MPCM content, and the decrease was the highest when the temperature level was 55-56 °C. Moreover, the compressive strength, flexural strength and density of hardened cement paste decreased with the increase in MPCM content linearly.
