Abstract Breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed human decision-making processes. Individuals increasingly rely on algorithms to assist with various tasks such as searching and shopping. However, the widespread use of personalized algorithmic decision-making has raised numerous ethical concerns, specifically its impact on user autonomy. This article examines these concerns and argues that algorithmic decision-making presents several challenges to user autonomy that are difficult to eliminate. These challenges include the fact that algorithms deviate from a user’s authentic self, create self-reinforcing loops that narrow the user’s self, and lead to a decline in the user’s capacities. This article attributes these challenges to the ontological differences between users and AI, as well as their unawareness regarding the ethical risks associated with algorithms, asserting that the sense of autonomy users experience in algorithmic decision-making is merely an illusion. From the perspective of human-AI interaction, it is proposed a strategy that achieves a balance between human insight and AI through a human-in-the-loop approach to mitigate these challenges. This approach maximizes the strengths of AI in processing and analyzing data while ensuring that users retain agency.

Soybean plant architecture has a significant impact on yield potential, but the genetic underpinnings of key architectural traits remain elusive. The primary objective of this study was to explore the genetic foundations underlying main stem node number (MSN) in soybeans. Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) contained a 234 individual derived from crosses between two cultivars Zhonghuang35 (ZH35) and Jindou21 (JD21) was evaluated for seed hardness across 3 years (2013, 2014, and 2015 in Gansu). Markedly, the parent varieties, shown significant differences in MSN. Also, the RIL population exhibited a wide range of genetic variation in MSN. A high-density genetic map composed of 8,078 specific-locus amplified fragment (SLAF) markers, spanning 3,480.98 centimorgans (cM) with an average inter-marker distance of 0.59 cM were used to construct linkage map. Using ICIM analysis identified a total of 23 Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) across the 20 chromosome, of which five QTLs were detected in multiple years in Chr.6. Notably, we identified a stable major QTL, qMSN-6-4, explaining up to 24.81% of phenotypic variation. This QTL govern seven candidate genes with potential roles in regulating MSN development in soybean, including Glyma.06G027500 with a domain of unknown function, Glyma.06G027600 involved in proton transport, Glyma.06G027700 linked to proteolysis, Glyma.06G027900 related to transcriptional regulation, and Glyma.06G028000 and Glyma.06G028050 associated with membrane functions. The RT-PCR analysis confirmed that these genes were expressed differently between the parental lines this supports the idea that they may play a role in determining MSN. Glyma.06G027500 and Glyma.06G027600 showing higher expression in JD21 leaves and nodes, while Glyma.06G027700 and Glyma.06G028000 exhibited increased expression in ZH35 stems, highlighting their distinct roles in transcription regulation, membrane activities, and protein degradation that contribute to MSN formation in soybean. This study offers valuable insights into the genetic mechanisms governing soybean MSN, providing a foundation for future research and crop improvement efforts.

Low temperatures greatly restrict the development, growth, and productivity of soybeans, with their effects differing across various cultivars. The present work investigated the transcriptome and physiological reactions of two soybean cultivars, namely “KD52” exhibiting cold tolerance and “DS17” displaying cold sensitivity, to cold stress across a precisely defined period. The soybean plants were subjected to cold treatment at 6 °C for durations of 0, 2, 4, and 8 h. A comparative physiological marker study revealed distinct reactions to cold stress in the two cultivars. The findings showed that increased malondialdehyde levels provided evidence of DS17’s heightened vulnerability to lipid peroxidation and membrane degradation. In contrast, the KD52 cultivar exhibited increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, including peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, in response to cold exposure, suggesting a strong antioxidant defense system against oxidative stress. The transcriptomic analysis revealed dynamic responses, mapping 54,532 genes. Within this group, a total of 234 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found to be consistently changed at several time intervals, showing unique expression patterns across the two cultivars. Analysis of the association between these important DEGs and the physiological indicators revealed candidate genes that may be involved in controlling oxidative damage and antioxidant defenses. Some key genes showed a progressive rise in expression over time in both cultivars, with a more significant acceleration in KD52, and are probably involved in promoting adaptation processes during extended periods of cold exposure. The identification of improved defense mechanisms in KD52, together with the identification of crucial genes, offers great prospects for enhancing the cold stress resilience of soybean.

Abstract Salt is recognized as one of the most major factors that limits soybean yield in acidic soils. Soil enzyme activity and bacterial community have a critical function in improving the tolerance to soybean. Our aim was to assess the activities of soil enzyme, the structure of bacteria and their potential functions for salt resistance between Salt-tolerant (Salt-T) and -sensitive (Salt-S) soybean genotypes when subject to salt stress. Plant biomass, soil physicochemical properties, soil catalase, urease, sucrase, amylase, and acid phosphatase activities, and rhizosphere microbial characteristics were investigated in Salt-T and Salt-S soybean genotypes under salt stress with a pot experiment. Salt stress significantly decreased the soil enzyme activities and changed the rhizosphere microbial structure in a genotype-dependent manner. In addition, 46 ASVs which were enriched in the Salt-T geotype under the salt stress, such as ASV19 (Alicyclobacillus), ASV132 (Tumebacillus), ASV1760 (Mycobacterium) and ASV1357 (Bacillus), which may enhance the tolerance to soybean under salt stress. Moreover, the network structure of Salt-T soybean was simplified by salt stress, which may result in soil bacterial communities being susceptible to external factors. Salt stress altered the strength of soil enzyme activities and the assembly of microbial structure in Salt-T and Salt-S soybean genotypes. Na+, NO3 −–N, NH4 +–N and Olsen-P were the most important driving factors in the structure of bacterial community in both genotypes. Salt-T genotypes enriched several microorganisms that contributed to enhance salt tolerance in soybeans, such as Alicyclobacillus, Tumebacillus, and Bacillus. Nevertheless, the simplified network structure of salt-T genotype due to salt stress may render its bacterial community structure unstable and susceptible.

Vegetative soybean (maodou or edamame) serves as a nutrient-rich food source with significant potential for mitigating global nutritional deficiencies. This study undertook a thorough examination of the nutritional profiles and transcriptomic landscapes of six soybean cultivars, including three common cultivars (Heinong551, Heinong562, and Heinong63) and three fresh maodou cultivars (Heinong527, HeinongXS4, and HeinongXS5). Nutrient analysis of the seeds disclosed notable differences in the levels of protein, fat, soluble sugars, vitamin E, calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, and zinc across the cultivars. Through comparative transcriptome profiling and RNA sequencing, distinct variations in differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between fresh and traditional maodou cultivars. Functional enrichment analyses underscored the involvement of DEGs in critical biological processes, such as nutrient biosynthesis, seed development, and stress responses. Additionally, association studies demonstrated robust correlations between specific DEG expression patterns and seed nutrient compositions across the different cultivars. Sankey diagrams illustrated that DEGs are strongly linked with seed quality traits, revealing potential molecular determinants that govern variations in nutritional content. The identified DEGs and their relationships with nutritional profiles offer valuable insights for breeding programs focused on developing cultivars with improved nutritional quality, tailored to specific dietary needs or industrial applications.

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has been widely studied and applied as an effective analytical technology for the on-site detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Despite its superior selectivity compared with most gas sensors, its limited dynamic range is regarded as a major drawback, limiting its further application in quantitative measurements. In this work, we proposed a novel sample introduction method based on pulsed membrane adsorption, which effectively enhanced IMS’s ability to measure analytes at higher concentrations. Taking N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as an example, this new sampling method expanded the dynamic range from 1 ppm to 200 ppm. The working principle and measurement strategy of this sampling method were also discussed, providing new insights for the design and application of IMS-based instruments.

Sulfur (S) fertilization and rhizobium inoculation are important agronomic practices for improving soybean growth and yield. However, their combined effects on yield components and the resultant impacts on yield need further investigation. Our study aimed to verify the combined effects of S fertilizer and rhizobium inoculant on the yield components and seed yield of soybeans, as well as photosynthesis dynamics during the V5–R6 growth stages. A randomized block design incorporating two factors was employed for field experiments on soybean, involving the application of five rates of sulfur (0, 5.0, 9.8, 14.8, and 19.6 kg S ha−1) with rhizobium inoculation or without. A reduction of 50% in mineral fertilizer according to farmer practice (FP) was applied alongside different rates of sulfur for field experiments on soybeans. The findings indicated that the application of sulfur fertilization significantly enhanced soybean yield by increasing the number of grains per plant (NG) and the number of pods per plant (NP). Maximum grain yield was reached under treatment with an S rate of 19.6 kg S ha−1, which increased NG by 39% more than an S rate of 0 kg S ha−1. Correlation analysis indicated that higher photosynthesis was closely associated with increased yield components. This study demonstrated that applying S fertilizers could improve soybean production by combining the appropriate sulfur concentration and rhizobia inoculation.

Layered trihalides, mainly formed by metal elements and halogens, are promising candidates for spintronic devices and van der Waals heterostructures, but are rarely found in nonmetal halides. Motivated by the purpose of searching for the compelling layered configuration in a covalent system, we performed systemically high-pressure experiments to explore the crystal structures in typical PBr_{3} with diamond anvil cell technique. At room temperature, PBr_{3} crystallizes into a molecular crystal with orthorhombic symmetry above 0.9 GPa and is found to persist up to at least 43.9 GPa as confirmed by in situ Raman and x-ray diffraction measurements. Strikingly, a novel layered phase with a space group P2_{1}/c is observed at ∼27.0GPa and ∼1800 K, which is characterized by quasi-six-coordination of P atoms with nearby Br atoms. In addition, first-principles calculations indicate that the unusual coordination of the P atom in P2_{1}/c phase is highly correlated with the pressure-induced generation of pnictogen bonds. Our current findings not only expand the understanding of the phase diagram of PBr_{3}, but also show an interesting transformation from molecular crystal to an extended layered phase achieved in a broad range of nonmetal trihalides.

Soluble sugar is a major indicator of the intrinsic quality of vegetable soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ]. The improvement of soluble sugar content in soybean is very important due to its healthcare functions for humans. The genetic mechanism of soluble sugar in soybean is unclear. In this study, 278 diverse soybean accessions were utilized to identify the quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) for total soluble sugar content in soybean seeds based on a genome-wide association study (GWAS). A total of 25,921 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with minor allele frequencies (MAFs) ≥ 5% and missing data ≤ 10% were selected for GWAS. Totally, thirteen QTNs associated with total soluble sugar content were identified, which were distributed on ten chromosomes. One hundred and fifteen genes near the 200-kb flanking region of these identified QTNs were considered candidate genes associated with total soluble sugar content in soybean seed. Gene-based association analysis and haplotype analysis were utilized to further identify the effect of candidate genes on total soluble sugar content. Totally, 84 SNPs from seventeen genes across four chromosomes were significantly associated with the total soluble sugar content. Among them, three SNPs from Glyma.02G292900 were identified at two locations, and other eighty-one SNPs from sixteen genes were detected at three locations. Furthermore, expression level analysis of candidate genes revealed that Glyma.02G293200 and Glyma.02G294900 were significantly positively associated with soluble sugar content and Glyma.02G294000 was significantly negatively associated with soluble sugar content. Six genes (i.e., Glyma.02G292600, Glyma.02G292700, Glyma.02G294000, Glyma.02G294300, Glyma.02G294400, and Glyma.15G264200) identified by GWAS were also detected by the analysis of differential expression genes based on soybean germplasms with higher and lower soluble sugar content. Among them, Glyma.02G294000 is the only gene that was identified by gene-based association analysis with total soluble sugar content and was considered an important candidate gene for soluble sugar content. These candidate genes and beneficial alleles would be useful for improving the soluble sugar content of soybean.

Preserving viable pollen is of great interest to breeders to maintain desirable germplasm for future inbreeding. Ultra-low temperature preservation of pollen is an effective and safe way for long-term storage of plant germplasm resources. In this study, we improved methods for the preservation of soybean pollen at ultra-low temperature. Soybean flowers at the initially-open stage were collected at 6–10 a.m. during the fully-bloom stage of soybean plants and were dehydrated for 10 h and then frozen and stored at −196 or −80°C. In vitro culture experiments showed that the viability of preserved pollen remained as high as about 90%. The off-season (local site Heihe) and off-site (Beijing, after long-distance express delivery from Heihe) hybridization verification was conducted, and no significant difference in true hybrid rate was founded between the preserved pollen and the fresh pollen. The ultra-low temperature preservation technology for soybean pollen could break the spatiotemporal limit of soybean hybridization and facilitate the development of engineered soybean breeding.

Abstract Background The snail Biomphalaria straminea is one of the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. Biomphalaria straminea is also an invasive species, known for its strong capability on peripheral expansion, long-distance dispersal and colonization. Using molluscicides to control snail populations is an important strategy to interrupt schistosomiasis transmission and to prevent the spread of the invasive species. In this study, a series of pyridylphenylurea derivatives were synthesized as potential molluscicides. Their impact on adult snails and egg masses was evaluated. Acute toxicity to fish of the derivatives was also examined to assess their effect on non-target organisms. The preliminary mechanisms of action of the derivatives were studied by enzyme activity assays. Results The representative compounds, 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(pyridin-3-yl)urea (compound 8) and 1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-(pyridin-3-yl)urea (compound 9), exhibited strong molluscicidal activity against adult snails with LD50 values of 0.50 and 0.51 mg/l and potent inhibitory effects on snail egg hatchability with IC50 values of 0.05 and 0.09 mg/l. Notably, both compounds showed good target specificity with potent molluscicidal capability observed in snails, but very low toxicity to local fishes. Furthermore, the exposure of compounds 8 and 9 significantly elevated the enzyme activities of acid phosphatase and nitric oxide synthase of the snails, while no significant change was recorded in the activities of alkaline phosphatase, acetylcholine esterase and superoxide dismutase. Conclusion The results suggested that compounds 8 and 9 of pyridylphenylurea derivatives could be developed as promising molluscicide candidates for snail control.

Phytophthora root and stem rot caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora sojae is a destructive disease of soybean worldwide. Plant dirigent proteins (DIR) are proposed to have roles in biosynthesis of either lignan or lignin-like molecules, and are important for defense responses, secondary metabolism, and pathogen resistance. In the present work, a novel DIR gene expressed sequence tag is identified as up-regulated in the highly resistant soybean cultivar ‘Suinong 10’ inoculated with P. sojae. The full length cDNA is isolated using rapid amplification of cDNA ends, and designated GmDIR22 (GenBank accession no. HQ_993047). The full length GmDIR22 is 789 bp and contains a 567 bp open reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 188 amino acids. The sequence analysis indicated that GmDIR22 contains a conserved dirigent domain at amino acid residues 43–187. The quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR demonstrated that soybean GmDIR22 mRNA is expressed most highly in stems, followed by roots and leaves. The treatments with stresses demonstrated that GmDIR22 is significantly induced by P. sojae and gibberellic acid (GA3), and also responds to salicylic acid, methyl jasmonic acid, and abscisic acid. The GmDIR22 is targeted to the cytomembrane when transiently expressed in Arabidopsis protoplasts. Moreover, The GmDIR22 recombinant protein purified from Escherichia coli could effectively direct E-coniferyl alcohol coupling into lignan (+)-pinoresinol. Accordingly, the overexpression of GmDIR22 in transgenic soybean increased total lignan accumulation. Moreover, the lignan extracts from GmDIR22 transgenic plants effectively inhibits P. sojae hyphal growth. Furthermore, the transgenic overexpression of GmDIR22 in the susceptible soybean cultivar ‘Dongnong 50’ enhances its resistance to P. sojae. Collectively, these data suggested that the primary role of GmDIR22 is probably involved in the regulation of lignan biosynthesis, and which contributes to resistance to P. sojae.

Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] caused by the oomycete Phytophthora sojae, is a destructive disease worldwide. The molecular mechanism of the soybean response to P. sojae is largely unclear. We report a novel WRKY transcription factor (TF) in soybean, GmWRKY31, in the host response to P. sojae. Overexpression and RNA interference analysis demonstrated that GmWRKY31 enhanced resistance to P. sojae in transgenic soybean plants. GmWRKY31 was targeted to the nucleus, where it bound to the W-box and acted as an activator of gene transcription. Moreover, we determined that GmWRKY31 physically interacted with GmHDL56, which improved resistance to P. sojae in transgenic soybean roots. GmWRKY31 and GmHDL56 shared a common target GmNPR1 which was induced by P. sojae. Overexpression and RNA interference analysis demonstrated that GmNPR1 enhanced resistance to P. sojae in transgenic soybean plants. Several pathogenesis-related (PR) genes were constitutively activated, including GmPR1a, GmPR2, GmPR3, GmPR4, GmPR5a, and GmPR10, in soybean plants overexpressing GmNPR1 transcripts. By contrast, the induction of PR genes was compromised in transgenic GmNPR1-RNAi lines. Taken together, these findings suggested that the interaction between GmWRKY31 and GmHDL56 enhances resistance to P. sojae by regulating defense-related gene expression in soybean.

BACKGROUND: With the migration of human beings, advances of agricultural sciences, evolution of planting patterns and global warming, soybeans have expanded to both tropical and high-latitude cold regions (HCRs). Unlike other regions, HCRs have much more significant and diverse photoperiods and temperature conditions over seasons or across latitudes, and HCR soybeans released there show rich diversity in maturity traits. However, HCR soybeans have not been as well classified into maturity groups (MGs) as other places. Therefore, it is necessary to identify MGs in HCRs and to genotype the maturity loci. METHODS: Local varieties were collected from the northern part of Northeast China and the far-eastern region of Russia. Maturity group reference (MGR) soybeans of MGs MG000, MG00, and MG0 were used as references during field experiments. Both local varieties and MGR soybeans were planted for two years (2010-2011) in Heihe (N 50°15', E 127°27', H 168.5 m), China. The days to VE (emergence), R1 (beginning bloom) and R7 (beginning maturity) were recorded and statistically analyzed. Furthermore, some varieties were further genotyped at four molecularly-identified maturity loci E1, E2, E3 and E4. RESULTS: The HCR varieties were classified into MG0 or even more early-maturing. In Heihe, some varieties matured much earlier than MG000, which is the most early-maturing known MG, and clustered into a separate group. We designated the group as MG0000, following the convention of MGs. HCR soybeans had relatively stable days to beginning bloom from emergence. The HCR varieties diversified into genotypes of E1, E2, E3 and E4. These loci had different effects on maturity. CONCLUSION: HCRs diversify early-maturing MGs of soybean. MG0000, a new MG that matures much earlier than known MGs, was developed. HCR soybean breeding should focus more on shortening post-flowering reproductive growth. E1, E2, E3, and E4 function differentially.

The first soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] breeding program in China was established in the northeast in 1913. A trend analysis of widely grown cultivars across Chinese soybean breeding history may provide a better perspective on the genetic progress in soybean. The objective of the current study was to assess the genetic change of 15 phenological, yield, and agronomic traits on widely grown cultivars in northeast China. Sixty-four soybean cultivars representing a span of 84 yr (1923-2007) of release were included. The field experiments were conducted at three sites in each region during 2009, 2010, and 2011, and the annual genetic changes were obtained by regression analysis. The results showed that the yield gain in widely grown cultivars of different regions ranged from 6 to 16 kg ha-1 yr-1 due to improvements in different yield components in the last nine decades. In addition, modern cultivars demonstrated more upright plant architecture, fewer branches, shorter height, higher lodging resistance, and earlier flowering than obsolete cultivars. However, changes were insignificant in the height of the bottom pod and the node number. The changing rates of yield and phenological traits across these decades were constant, while that of agronomic traits were discontinuous. Days to flowering, branch number, and lodging score were more responsive to environments in new cultivars than in old cultivars. In conclusion, these findings indicate a substantial improvement in the yield, agronomic, and phenological traits resulted from long-term genetic breeding. Ternary content-addressable memories (TCAMs) may be used to obtain a simple and very fast implementation of a router's forwarding engine. The applicability of TCAMs is, however, limited by their size and high power requirement. Zane et al. proposed a method and associated algorithms to reduce the power needed to search a forwarding table using a TCAM. We improve on both the algorithms proposed by them. Additionally, we show how to couple TCAMs and high-bandwidth SRAMs so as to overcome both the power and size limitations of a pure TCAM forwarding engine. By using one of our novel TCAM-SRAM coupling schemes (M-12 Wb), we are able to reduce TCAM memory by a factor of about 5 on IPv4 data sets and by a factor of about 2.5 on IPv6 data sets; TCAM power requirement is reduced by a factor of about 10 on IPv4 data sets and by a factor of about 6 on IPv6 data sets. These comparisons are with respect to the improved TCAM algorithms we have developed for the strategies of Zane et al. The stated improvements come at the cost of increasing SRAM requirement by a factor 2.5 for IPv4 data and a factor of 5 for IPv6 data. This cost is unimportant given that SRAMs are relatively quite cheap and have much less power requirement. For another of our novel TCAM-SRAM coupling schemes (1-12Wc), the TCAM memory and power reduced by factors of about 4 and 12 for IPv4 data sets, respectively, and by factors of about 2 and 10 for IPv6 data sets. The SRAM required, however, increased by factors of 3 and 7, respectively. We develop algorithms for the compact representation of the 1- and 2-dimensional tries that are used for Internet packet classification. Our compact representations are experimentally compared with competing compact representations for 1- and multi-dimensional packet classifiers and found to simultaneously reduce the number of memory accesses required for a lookup as well as the memory required to store the classifier. Objectives: The effectiveness of Gil-Vernet’s trigonoplasty, with technical modifications, was studied in treating vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in neurogenic bladders. Methods: Modified Gil-Vernet’s trigonoplasty, making the transmural ureters advance over the midline and cross each other in the trigone, was applied in patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction and VUR, diagnosed by voiding cystourethrogram. Most of the patients were sufficiently followed up by cystourethrogram. Results: 26 patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction were diagnosed as having 43 refluxing units and underwent modified Gil-Vernet’s trigonoplasty. Reflux was grade I in 5 units, grade II in 7, grade III in 5, grade IV in 18, and grade V in 8, with unilateral reflux in 9 patients and bilateral reflux in 17. Surgery was successful in 95.3% of 43 refluxing units. 22 patients were followed 3–6 months after the operation, and the cure rate was 90.9% (no reflux under voiding cystourethrogram). 18 patients were followed up for more than 2 years without recurrence of VUR. Conclusions: Modified Gil-Vernet’s trigonoplasty might be a useful technique in the management of patients with VUR secondary to neurogenic bladder dysfunction. Copyright © 2005 S. Abstract In this paper, the material removal mechanism of copper chemical mechanical polishing was studied by the quasicontinuum method that integrated molecular dynamics and the finite element method. By analyzing the abrasive process of different particle sizes on single crystal copper, we investigated the internal material deformation, the formation of chips, the stress distribution, and the change of cutting force. Results showed that shear band deformation was generated along the cutting direction at approximately 45° inside the workpiece material. The deformation was accompanied by dislocations and sliding phenomena in the shear band region. Smaller abrasive particle size led to poor quality of the workpiece, while a larger particle size led to better quality. However, larger particle size resulted in greater plastic deformation and deeper residual stress inside the workpiece. Size change of abrasive particles had little effect on the tangential cutting force.
