Pesticides are agricultural inputs that can significantly reduce yield losses, regulate plant growth, effectively liberate agricultural productivity, and improve food security. The availability of pesticides in economies worldwide is ensured by redistribution through international trade, with different economies playing different roles in this process. In this study, we measured and ranked the importance of economies using nine node metrics. We found that the clustering coefficient was negatively correlated with the other eight node metrics, whereas the other eight node metrics were positively correlated with each other and could be grouped into three communities (betweenness; in-degree, PageRank, authority, and in-closeness; out-degree, hub, and out-closeness). We further investigated the structural robustness of international pesticide trade networks proxied by large component size under three types of shocks to economies (node removal in descending, random, and ascending orders). The results showed that, except for the clustering coefficient, international pesticide trade networks are relatively robust under shocks to economies in ascending order but fragile under shocks to economies in descending order. By contrast, removing nodes with a clustering coefficient in ascending and descending order yielded similar robustness curves. Moreover, the structural robustness related to large component size evolved over time and exhibited an inverse U-shaped pattern.

The statistical properties of the international trade networks of all commodities as a whole have been extensively studied. However, the international trade networks of individual commodities often behave differently. Due to the importance of pesticides in agricultural production and food security, we investigated the evolving community structure in the international pesticide trade networks (iPTNs) of five categories from 2007 to 2018. We reveal that the community structures in the undirected and directed iPTNs exhibit regional patterns. However, the regional patterns are very different for undirected and directed networks and for different categories of pesticides. Moreover, the community structure is more stable in the directed iPTNs than in the undirected iPTNs. We also extract the intrinsic community blocks for the directed international trade networks of each pesticide category. It is found that the largest intrinsic community block is the most stable, appears in every pesticide category, and contains important economies (Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, and Portugal) in Europe. Other important and stable intrinsic community blocks are Canada and the United States in North America, Argentina and Brazil in South America, and Australia and New Zealand in Oceania. These results suggest that, in the international trade of pesticides, geographic distance and the complementarity of important and adjacent economies are significant factors.

Abstract The international pesticide trade network (iPTN) is a key factor affecting global food production and food security. The trade relationship is a key component in iPTNs. In a complex international trade environment, we model the impacts of uncertain factors such as trade wars, economic blockades and local wars, as removing vital relationships in the trade network. There are many complex network studies on node centrality, but few on link centrality or link importance. We propose a new method for computing network link centrality. The main innovation of the method is in converting the original network into a dual graph, the nodes in the dual graph corresponding to the links of the original network. Through the dual graph, the node centrality indicators can measure the centrality of the links in the original network. We verify the effectiveness of the network link centrality indicator based on the dual graph in the iPTN, analyze the relationship between the existing network link centrality indicators and the indicator proposed in this paper, and compare their differences. It is found that the trade relationships with larger indicators (hub, outcloseness, outdegree) based on the dual graph have a greater impact on network efficiency than those based on the original pesticide trade networks.

Abstract Background To compare the perioperative and short-term efficacy and cost of the da Vinci Xi and da Vinci Si surgical systems for radical prostatectomy. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 175 patients with prostate cancer who underwent radical prostatectomy with the da Vinci Si or Xi surgical systems in our hospital from June 2019 to June 2020. Of the 175 patients, 82 underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy with the da Vinci Xi surgery system, and 93 patients underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy with the da Vinci Si surgical system. The perioperative outcomes, short-term efficacy and costs were compared between the two groups. Results The anesthesia time, operation time, docking time, indwelling catheter time and postoperative bed rest time in the Xi group were shorter than those in the Si group (respectively, 268.8 min vs. 219.3 min, P = 0.001; 228.2 min vs. 259.6 min, P

Abstract Background To evaluate the feasibility and safety of robot-assisted retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy (RARLA) for large pheochromocytomas (PHEOs; size≥6 cm) compared with retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy (RLA). Methods Fifty-one patients who underwent adrenalectomy for large PHEOs between March 2016 and January 2019 were enrolled and divided into two groups, including 32 RLA cases and 19 RARLA cases. We compared the perioperative efficacy and long-term follow-up results between the two groups. Results Preoperative data, including demographics, comorbidities and tumour characteristics, were similar between the groups. Intraoperatively, the RARLA group had a lower incidence of haemodynamic instability (26.3% vs. 56.2%, P = 0.038) and less intraoperative blood loss (100 ml vs. Two hundred milliliter, P = 0.042) than the RLA group. The groups showed no significant differences in operative time or transfusion rates. Postoperatively, the time to diet resumption, time to ambulation, time to drainage removal and postoperative hospital stay were shorter in the RARLA group than in the RLA group (1 d vs. 2 d, P = 0.027; 1 d vs. 2 d, P = 0.034; 3 d vs. 5 d, P = 0.002; 5 d vs. 6 d, P = 0.02, respectively). The groups exhibited no significant differences in the duration of anaesthetic use, complications, or long-term follow-up results for the blood pressure (BP) improvement rate. Conclusions Compared with RLA, RARLA is a safe, feasible and even optimized procedure for large PHEOs.

In this work, the novel graphene oxide/titanate nanotubes (GTNT) composites were synthesized through a facile and high-yield alkaline hydrothermal method. SEM, TEM, XRD, BET, and TGA/DTA were applied to study the morphology and structure of the GTNT composites. The results show that a huge number of titanate nanotubes are closely attached to the graphene sheet structure and overlap each other. This hierarchical morphology endows the GTNT composites with not only the high specific surface area of 236.9 m2/g but also abundant porous structure, both of which are benefit for Co(II) adsorption. The batch adsorption experiments demonstrate that the GTNT composites have a high adsorption capacity and rapid kinetics for Co(II) adsorption (10 min for equilibrium). The adsorption capacity of the GTNT composites reaches 211.1 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics of the GTNT composites fits well to the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherm of which fits well to the Langmuir model. The adsorption performance of Co(II) ions on the GTNT composites has a great relationship with the pH value, in the pH range of 1–7, the Co(II) adsorption capacity of the GTNT composites greatly increases with the increase of the pH value. In addition, the effect of coexisting anions on fluoride removal is also investigated. Na+, K+, and Mg2+ ions have shown a negligible effect on the Co(II) adsorption efficiency of the GTNT composites. However, the existences of Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions would clearly have an effect on the Co(II) adsorption of the GTNT composites. The adsorption mechanism is also discussed. It is believed that the GTNT composites can be considered as a potential functional material for removing the radioactive metals containing wastewater.

To meet the increasing demand for food around the world, pesticides are widely used and will continue to be widely used in agricultural production to reduce yield losses and maintain product quality. International pesticide trade serves to reallocate the distribution of pesticides around the world. We investigate the statistical properties of the international trade networks of five categories of pesticides from the view angle of temporal directed and weighted networks. We observed an overall increasing trend in network size, network density, average in- and out-degrees, average in- and out-strengths, temporal similarity, and link reciprocity, indicating that the rising globalization of pesticides trade is driving the networks denser. However, the distributions of link weights remain unchanged along time for the five categories of pesticides. In addition, all the networks are disassortatively mixed because large importers or exporters are more likely to trade with small exporters or importers. We also observed positive correlations between in-degree and out-degree, in-strength and out-strength, link reciprocity and in-degree, out-degree, in-strength, and out-strength, while node’s local clustering coefficient is negatively related to in-degree, out-degree, in-strength, and out-strength. We show that some structural and dynamic properties of the international pesticide trade networks are different from those of the international trade networks, highlighting the presence of idiosyncratic features of different goods and products in the international trade.

We put a stringent constraint on the isovector nuclear interactions in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model from the centroid energy E−1 of the isovector giant dipole resonance in 208Pb as well as its electric polarizability αD. Using the Bayesian analysis method, E−1 and αD are found to be mostly determined by the nuclear symmetry energy Esym at about ρ⋆=0.05 fm−3 and the isovector nucleon effective mass mv⋆ at the saturation density. At 90% confidence level, we obtain Esym(ρ⋆)=16.4−0.9+1.0 MeV and mv⋆/m=0.79−0.06+0.06.

Background: Head-to-head evidence is lacking in comparative risks of high-grade adverse events (AEs) among different systemic treatment options for advanced melanoma.Methods: An up-to-date systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of patients with advanced melanoma were eligible if at least one intervention was the Food and Drug Administration–approved targeted or immune checkpoint inhibitors. Risks of high-grade AEs were estimated by random-effects Bayesian NMAs, based on relative risks. Surface under the cumulative ranking probabilities was used to assess relative ranking of treatments. The summary incidences were calculated.Results: Twenty-five RCTs (12,925 patients) comparing 10 different systemic treatment options were included. BRAF/MEK had the highest risk of overall high-grade AEs (pooled incidence: 32.11%). BRAF had the highest risk of high-grade arthralgia (0.39%), whereas MEK had the highest risk of high-grade hypertension (2.28%) and nausea (0.37%). Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4)/chemo had the highest risk of high-grade diarrhea (1.31%), alanine aminotransferase (0.60%), and aspartate aminotransferase elevation (0.59%). Programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/CTLA-4 had the highest risks of high-grade pyrexia (1.14%) and rash (0.94%). Using PD-1 inhibitor alone had the lowest risks of overall high-grade AEs.Conclusions: Different systemic treatment options have varying high-grade AEs in advanced melanoma treatment. Current evidences highlight the important risks of BRAF/MEK, CTLA-4/chemo, and PD-1/CTLA-4.

Within the minimum model of neutron stars (NS) consisting of neutrons, protons and electrons, a new approach is proposed for inferring the symmetry energy of super-dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter above twice the saturation density ρ0 of nuclear matter directly from integrating iteratively barotropic pressures in both neutron stars and heavy-ion reactions. Simultaneously, the proton fraction of NSs at β equilibrium is extracted as a function of baryon density from the same procedure. An application of this approach using the NS pressure from GW170817 and the pressure in cold symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) extracted earlier by analyzing nuclear collective flow data in relativistic heavy-ion collisions provides a useful constraining band for the symmetry energy above 2ρ0.

Abstract The availability of big data recorded from massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the potential connection between individuals’ network positions and their economic outputs. We use a statistical filtering method to construct dependence networks from weighted friendship networks of individuals. We investigate the 30 distinct motif positions in the 13 directed triadic motifs which represent microscopic dependences among individuals. Based on the structural similarity of motif positions, we further classify individuals into different groups. The node position diversity of individuals is found to be positively correlated with their economic outputs. We also find that the economic outputs of leaf nodes are significantly lower than that of the other nodes in the same motif. Our findings shed light on understanding the influence of network structure on economic activities and outputs in socioeconomic systems.

In order to produce more unknown neutron-rich nuclei around N=126, the transfer reactions 136Xe + 198Pt, 136–144Xe + 208Pb, and 132Sn + 208Pb are investigated within the framework of the dinuclear system (DNS) model. The influence of neutron excess of projectile on production cross sections of target-like products is studied through the reactions 136,144Xe + 208Pb. We find that the radioactive projectile 144Xe with much larger neutron excess is favorable to produce neutron-rich nuclei with charge number less than the target rather than produce transtarget nuclei. The incident energy dependence of yield distributions of fragments in the reaction 132Sn + 208Pb are also studied. The production cross sections of neutron-rich nuclei with Z=72–77 are predicted in the reactions 136–144Xe + 208Pb and 132Sn + 208Pb. It is noticed that the production cross sections of unknown neutron-rich nuclei in the reaction 144Xe + 208Pb are at least two orders of magnitude larger than those in the reaction 136Xe + 208Pb. The radioactive beam induced transfer reactions 139,144Xe + 208Pb, considering beam intensities proposed in SPIRAL2 (Production System of Radioactive Ion and Acceleration On-Line) project as well, for production of neutron-rich nuclei around the N=126 shell closure are investigated for the first time. It is found that, in comparison to the stable beam 136Xe, the radioactive beam 144Xe shows great advantages for producing neutron-rich nuclei with N=126 and the advantages get more obvious for producing nuclei with less charge number.

Background: Comprehensive evidence comparing treatment-related adverse events (trAEs) among PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors is unavailable.Methods: A systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted. Randomized controlled trials in cancer patients treated with PD1/PD-L1 inhibitors or their combinations with chemotherapy/placebo and compared with PD1/PD-L1 inhibitors/chemotherapy/placebo were identified through comprehensive searches of multiple databases. Bayesian NMA was performed using random-effects model. Relative ranking of treatments was assessed with surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) probabilities. Incidences and odds ratios of trAEs and immune-related adverse events (irAEs) of all-grade (Grade 1–5) and high-grade (Grade 3–5) were estimated.Results: Twenty-three RCTs (14,204 patients) comparing six different strategies were included. The incidence of trAEs was lowest for PD-L1 inhibitors (all-grade: pooled incidence = 60.4%, SUCRA = 77.2%; high-grade: 6.4, 73.8%). PD-L1 inhibitors plus chemotherapy had the highest incidence of all-grade trAEs (88.6, 10.1%), while PD-1 inhibitors plus chemotherapy had the highest incidence of high-grade trAEs (8.2, 9.3%). The use of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors alone was associated with significant reductions on high-grade trAEs, compared with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors plus chemotherapy. PD-1 inhibitors had the highest incidence of irAEs (all-grade: 15.1, 9.5%; high-grade: 3.5, 16.8%). Compared with PD-L1 inhibitors, PD-1 inhibitors neither increased trAEs nor irAEs significantly. Results from sensitivity analyses were consistent.Conclusions: Current data showed that PD-L1 inhibitors had the best safety on both trAEs and irAEs. Awareness of the comparative safety could promote further appropriate utilization of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in clinical practice.

The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy is among the most uncertain parts of the Equation of State (EOS) of dense neutron-rich nuclear matter. It is currently poorly known especially at suprasaturation densities partially because of our poor knowledge about isovector nuclear interactions at short distances. Because of its broad impacts on many interesting issues, pinning down the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy has been a longstanding and shared goal of both astrophysics and nuclear physics. New observational data of neutron stars including their masses, radii, and tidal deformations since GW170817 have helped improve our knowledge about nuclear symmetry energy, especially at high densities. Based on various model analyses of these new data by many people in the nuclear astrophysics community, while our brief review might be incomplete and biased unintentionally, we learned in particular the following: (1) The slope parameter L of nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density ρ0 of nuclear matter from 24 new analyses of neutron star observables was about L≈57.7±19 MeV at a 68% confidence level, consistent with its fiducial value from surveys of over 50 earlier analyses of both terrestrial and astrophysical data within error bars. (2) The curvature Ksym of nuclear symmetry energy at ρ0 from 16 new analyses of neutron star observables was about Ksym≈−107±88 MeV at a 68% confidence level, in very good agreement with the systematics of earlier analyses. (3) The magnitude of nuclear symmetry energy at 2ρ0, i.e., Esym(2ρ0)≈51±13 MeV at a 68% confidence level, was extracted from nine new analyses of neutron star observables, consistent with the results from earlier analyses of heavy-ion reactions and the latest predictions of the state-of-the-art nuclear many-body theories. (4) While the available data from canonical neutron stars did not provide tight constraints on nuclear symmetry energy at densities above about 2ρ0, the lower radius boundary R2.01=12.2 km from NICER’s very recent observation of PSR J0740+6620 of mass 2.08±0.07M⊙ and radius R=12.2–16.3 km at a 68% confidence level set a tight lower limit for nuclear symmetry energy at densities above 2ρ0. (5) Bayesian inferences of nuclear symmetry energy using models encapsulating a first-order hadron–quark phase transition from observables of canonical neutron stars indicated that the phase transition shifted appreciably both L and Ksym to higher values, but with larger uncertainties compared to analyses assuming no such phase transition. (6) The high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy significantly affected the minimum frequency necessary to rotationally support GW190814’s secondary component of mass (2.50–2.67) M⊙ as the fastest and most massive pulsar discovered so far. Overall, thanks to the hard work of many people in the astrophysics and nuclear physics community, new data of neutron star observations since the discovery of GW170817 have significantly enriched our knowledge about the symmetry energy of dense neutron-rich nuclear matter.

Background: Surfactant protein-A (SP-A) contributes to the regulation of sepsis-induced acute kidney injury. In a previous study, we demonstrated that the expression of SP-A in the human renal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells can be stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The present study evaluated the possible signal-transducing mechanisms of LPS-induced SP-A biosynthesis in the HK-2 cells. Methods: Tetrazolium salt colorimetry (MTT) assay was used to detect cell viability of HK-2 cells after LPS stimulation on different time points. HK-2 cells were stimulated with 100 ng/ml of LPS for different durations to determine the effects of LPS on SP-A and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) messenger RNA (mRNA) expression, as well as phosphorylation of mitogen-activated/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MEK) 1, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibitor-alpha (IkB-α). Then, HK-2 cells were pretreated with CLI-095, a TLR4 inhibitor, to analyze mRNA and protein levels of SP-A and TLR4 and expression of NF-κB in the cytoplasm and nucleus of HK-2 before LPS exposure. Results: HK-2 cells exposed to 100 ng/ml of LPS for 1, 6, and 24 h did not affect cell viability which showed no toxic effect of 100 ng/ml LPS on cells (P = 0.16); however, the biosynthesis of SP-A mRNA and protein in HK-2 cells was significantly increased (P = 0.02). As to the mechanism, LPS enhanced transmembrane receptor TLR4 protein expression. Sequentially, LPS time dependently augmented phosphorylation of MEK1, ERK1/2, and p38MAPK. In addition, levels of phosphorylated IκB-α and nuclear NF-κB were augmented with LPS exposure for 2 h. LPS-induced SP-A and TLR4 mRNA as well as NF-κB expression were significantly inhibited by pretreatment with CLI-095. Conclusions: The present study exhibited that LPS can increase SP-A synthesis in human renal epithelial cells through sequentially activating the TLR4-related MEK1-ERK1/2-NF-κB-dependent pathway.

Price limit trading rules are adopted in some stock markets (especially emerging markets) trying to cool off traders' short-term trading mania on individual stocks and increase market efficiency. Under such a microstructure, stocks may hit their up-limits and down-limits from time to time. However, the behaviors of price limit hits are not well studied partially due to the fact that main stock markets such as the US markets and most European markets do not set price limits. Here, we perform detailed analyses of the high-frequency data of all A-share common stocks traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2000 to 2011 to investigate the statistical properties of price limit hits and the dynamical evolution of several important financial variables before stock price hits its limits. We compare the properties of up-limit hits and down-limit hits. We also divide the whole period into three bullish periods and three bearish periods to unveil possible differences during bullish and bearish market states. To uncover the impacts of stock capitalization on price limit hits, we partition all stocks into six portfolios according to their capitalizations on different trading days. We find that the price limit trading rule has a cooling-off effect (object to the magnet effect), indicating that the rule takes effect in the Chinese stock markets. We find that price continuation is much more likely to occur than price reversal on the next trading day after a limit-hitting day, especially for down-limit hits, which has potential practical values for market practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Metastasis is the most pivotal cause of mortality in cancer patients. Immune tolerance plays a crucial role in tumor progression and metastasis. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this study, we investigated the potential roles and mechanisms of TLR2 signaling on tumor metastasis in a mouse model of intravenously injected B16 melanoma cells. Multiple subtypes of TLRs were expressed on B16 cells and several human cancer cell lines; TLR2 mediated the invasive activity of these cells. High metastatic B16 cells released more heat shock protein 60 than poor metastatic B16-F1 cells. Importantly, heat shock protein 60 released by tumor cells caused a persistent activation of TLR2 and was critical in the constitutive activation of transcription factor Stat3, leading to the release of immunosuppressive cytokines and chemokines. Moreover, targeting TLR2 markedly reduced pulmonary metastases and increased the survival of B16-bearing mice by reversing B16 cells induced immunosuppressive microenvironment and restoring tumor-killing cells such as CD8(+) T cells and M1 macrophages. Combining an anti-TLR2 antibody and a cytotoxic agent, gemcitabine, provided a further improvement in the survival of tumor-bearing mice. CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: Our results demonstrate that TLR2 is an attractive target against metastasis and that targeting immunosuppressive microenvironment using anti-TLR2 antibody is a novel therapeutic strategy for combating a life-threatening metastasis.

Many complex systems generate multifractal time series which are long-range cross-correlated. Numerous methods have been proposed to characterize the multifractal nature of these long-range cross correlations. However, several important issues about these methods are not well understood and most methods consider only one moment order. We study the joint multifractal analysis based on partition function with two moment orders, which was initially invented to investigate fluid fields, and derive analytically several important properties. We apply the method numerically to binomial measures with multifractal cross correlations and bivariate fractional Brownian motions without multifractal cross correlations. For binomial multifractal measures, the explicit expressions of mass function, singularity strength and multifractal spectrum of the cross correlations are derived, which agree excellently with the numerical results. We also apply the method to stock market indexes and unveil intriguing multifractality in the cross correlations of index volatilities.

Dynamics of pseudoscalar mesons (π, η, K, and ...) and hyperons (Α and Σ) produced in heavy-ion collisions near threshold energies has been investigated within the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics transport model. The in-medium modifications on particle production in dense nuclear matter are implemented in the model through corrections on the elementary cross sections and by inclusion of the meson-nucleon (or hyperon-nucleon) potentials, in which the isospin effects are considered. It is found that the transportation of particles are influenced with the in-medium corrections. The total number of pions is reduced with an isospin-, density-, and momentum-dependent pion-nucleon potential. However, the ratios of charged pions is enhanced with inclusion of the potential. The production of eta in the domain of midrapidities and high momenta is sensitive to the η-nucleon potential but weakly depends on symmetry energy. The attractive antikaon-nucleon potential enhances the subthreshold ... production and also influences the structure of phase-space distributions. The dynamics of etas, kaons, antikaons, and hyperons is also influenced by the pion potential because of collisions between pions and nucleons (resonances). The impacts of mean-field potentials on particle dynamics are investigated, such as the phase-space distributions from rapidity and transverse momentum spectra, inclusive invariant spectra, collective flows, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dependence of the momentum-dependent symmetry potential on the nuclear collective flows produced in semicentral 197Au + 197Au collisions at incident energies from 250 to 8004 MeV has been investigated within the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model. It is found that the theoretical results overestimate the values of the experimental data on directed flow of protons in the domain of large rapidities but can reproduce well the one of mass-three cluster. Neutron-proton differential flows and difference of neutron-proton collective flows are sensitive to the momentum-dependent symmetry potential, especially in the domain of larger rapidities and momenta. This sensitivity becomes stronger with increasing cut of the transverse velocity and becomes smaller with increasing incident energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics of strange particles produced in proton-induced nuclear reactions near threshold energies has been investigated within the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics transport model. The in-medium modifications on particle production in dense nuclear matter are considered through corrections on the elementary cross sections via the effective mass and the mean-field potentials. It is found that the attractive antikaon-nucleon potential enhances the subthreshold K production and influences the structure of inclusive spectra. The strangeness production is strongly suppressed in proton-induced reactions in comparison to heavy-ion collisions. The kaon-nucleon and antikaon-nucleon potentials change the structures of rapidity and transverse momentum distributions and the inclusive spectra. The measured K-/ K+ ratios in collisions of 12C + 12C, 197Au + 197Au, p + 12C, and p + 197Au from the KaoS Collaboration have been well explained with the inclusion of the in-medium potentials. A series of novel colourful BiOI photocatalysts have been synthesised by a simple oil bath method at 160°C. Several characterisation tools including X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to study the phase structure, morphologies, bandgap and catalytic performance of the prepared samples. The results show that BiOI exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency under visible light (λ > 420 nm) in the degradation of methyl orange. This result could be because of the narrow bandgap, for which Eg is about 1.4-2.25 eV, and a number of active positions for catalysts. h+ acts as the main active species during methyl orange degradation. The isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model is used to investigate the nuclear collective flow observables in semicentral 197Au+197Au collisions at 400A MeV. It is found that the calculated results can reproduce both the experimental data and the other theoretical calculations. We find that the cluster production influences the rapidity dependence of directed flow of protons but less influences the results of tritons. Neutron-proton differential collective flows have larger values when taking the neutron effective mass less than the one of protons as compared with the case of neutron effective mass greater than the one of protons at larger rapidities and transverse momenta. Thus neutron-proton differential collective flows are proposed to be a useful probe to the neutron-proton effective mass splitting and the momentum-dependent symmetry potential. In friendship networks, individuals have different numbers of friends, and the closeness or intimacy between an individual and her friends is heterogeneous. Using a statistical filtering method to identify relationships about who depends on whom, we construct dependence networks (which are directed) from weighted friendship networks of avatars in more than two hundred virtual societies of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). We investigate the evolution of triadic motifs in dependence networks. Several metrics show that the virtual societies evolved through a transient stage in the first two to three weeks and reached a relatively stable stage. We find that the unidirectional loop motif (M9) is underrepresented and does not appear, open motifs are also underrepresented, while other close motifs are overrepresented. We also find that, for most motifs, the overall level difference of the three avatars in the same motif is significantly lower than average, whereas the sum of ranks is only slightly larger than average. Mobile phone calling is one of the most widely used communication methods in modern society. The records of calls among mobile phone users provide us a valuable proxy for the understanding of human communication patterns embedded in social networks. Mobile phone users call each other forming a directed calling network. If only reciprocal calls are considered, we obtain an undirected mutual calling network. The preferential communication behavior between two connected users can be statistically tested and it results in two Bonferroni networks with statistically validated edges. We perform a comparative analysis of the statistical properties of these four networks, which are constructed from the calling records of more than nine million individuals in Shanghai over a period of 110 days. We find that these networks share many common structural properties and also exhibit idiosyncratic features when compared with previously studied large mobile calling networks. The production cross sections of superheavy nuclei in hot fusion reactions are investigated systematically. In hot fusion reactions, the capture cross section can be obtained by calculating the weighted average of the transmission probability for different orientations of deformed colliding nuclei. An analytical formula for calculating the value of the fusion probability is proposed, which is suitable for both hot and cold fusion reactions. The orientation effects are considered empirically in calculating the fusion probability. The method proposed in the present work reproduces the measured evaporation residue (ER) cross sections in hot fusion reactions acceptably well. The formula also gives reasonable results for fusion probability in cold fusion reactions. Using this method the evaporation residue cross sections for synthesizing Z = 119 and 120 are predicted. It is found that for hot fusion reaction's larger maximal ER cross section of the 4n channel corresponds to lower optimal incident energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Housing markets play a crucial role in economies and the collapse of a real-estate bubble usually destabilizes the financial system and causes economic recessions. We investigate the systemic risk and spatiotemporal dynamics of the US housing market (1975-2011) at the state level based on the Random Matrix Theory (RMT).Weidentify richer economic information in the largest eigenvalues deviating from RMT predictions for the housing market than for stock markets and find that the component signs of the eigenvectors contain either geographical information or the extent of differences in house price growth rates or both. By looking at the evolution of different quantities such as eigenvalues and eigenvectors, we find that the US housing market experienced six different regimes, which is consistent with the evolution of state clusters identified by the box clustering algorithm and the consensus clustering algorithm on the partial correlation matrices. We find that dramatic increases in the systemic risk are usually accompanied by regime shifts, which provide a means of early detection of housing bubbles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the Boltzmann-Langevin transport model, in which the isospin and momentum-dependent potential is incorporated, we investigate the neutron-proton effective mass splitting in central reactions using Sn isotopes at 50 MeV/nucleon. It is found that the transverse momentum, rapidity, and kinetic energy distributions of free neutron over proton ratio are sensitive to the neutron-proton effective mass splitting, especially at higher transverse momenta, at higher kinetic energies, and at larger rapidities. The calculated results favor the effective mass of neutrons less than the one of protons in comparison with the experimental data of Famiano et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 052701 (2006)]. Modern technologies not only provide a variety of communication modes (e.g., texting, cell phone conversation, and online instant messaging), but also detailed electronic traces of these communications between individuals. These electronic traces indicate that the interactions occur in temporal bursts. Here, we study intercall duration of communications of the 100,000 most active cell phone users of a Chinese mobile phone operator. We confirm that the intercall durations follow a power-law distribution with an exponential cutoff at the population level but find differences when focusing on individual users. We apply statistical tests at the individual level and find that the intercall durations follow a power-law distribution for only 3,460 individuals (3.46%). The intercall durations for the majority (73.34%) follow a Weibull distribution. We quantify individual users using three measures: out-degree, percentage of outgoing calls, and communication diversity. We find that the cell phone users with a power-law duration distribution fall into three anomalous clusters: robot-based callers, telecom fraud, and telephone sales. This information is of interest to both academics and practitioners, mobile telecom operators in particular. In contrast, the individual users with a Weibull duration distribution form the fourth cluster of ordinary cell phone users. We also discover more information about the calling patterns of these four clusters (e.g., the probability that a user will call the Cr-th most contact and the probability distribution of burst sizes). Background: Mutations in the parkin gene cause autosomal recessive early-onset Parkinson disease (EOPD). The A265G variant in the HS1 binding protein 3 gene (HS1BP3) is common in essential tremor (ET). Objective: To investigate the presence of mutations in the parkin gene and the A265G variant in the HS1BP3 gene in a Mexican family with EOPD, ET, and Bell palsy. Design: Direct sequencing, semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were performed in the 14 members of this family. Setting: Mexican family. Patients: Two patients with EOPD were analyzed. Results: Compound heterozygous mutations (EX 3_6 del and EX 5 del) in the parkin gene were identified in 2 patients with EOPD, characterized by beneficial response to levodopa, relatively slow progression, and motor complications. Although heterozygous EX 3_6 del and homozygous EX 5 del mutations in the parkin gene have been previously described, to our knowledge, this is the first report of these mutations in compound heterozygotes. Seven heterozygous A265G variants in the HS1BP3 gene were found in this pedigree, but they did not cosegregate with ET, Parkinson disease, or Bell palsy, supporting the conclusion that this variant is not associated with ET. Conclusions: Compound heterozygous parkin mutations (EX 3_6 del and EX 5 del) caused EOPD in this family, but the A265G variant in the HS1BP3 gene, previously considered to be responsible for ET, was probably not pathogenically related to the ET in this family. Background: Mutations in the parkin gene (PRKN) cause autosomal recessive early-onset Parkinson disease (EOPD). Objective: To investigate the presence of mutations in the PRKN gene in a white family with EOPD and the genotype-phenotype correlations. Design: Twenty members belonging to 3 generations of the EOPD family with 4 affected subjects underwent genetic analysis. Direct genomic DNA sequencing, semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction analyses were performed to identify the PRKN mutation. Results: Compound heterozygous mutations (T240M and EX 5_6 del) in the PRKN gene were identified in 4 patients with early onset (at ages 30-38 years). Although heterozygous T240M and homozygous EX 5_6 del mutations in the PRKN gene have been previously described, this is, to our knowledge, the first report of these mutations in compound heterozygotes. The phenotype of patients was that of classic autosomal recessive EOPD characterized by beneficial response to levodopa, relatively slow progression, and motor complications. All heterozygous mutation carriers (T240M or EX 5_6 del) and a 56-year-old woman who was a compound heterozygous mutation carrier (T240M and EX 5_6 del) were free of any neurological symptoms. Conclusions: Compound heterozygous mutations (T240M and EX 5_6 del) in the PRKN gene were found to cause autosomal recessive EOPD in 4 members of a large white family. One additional member with the same mutation, who is more than 10 years older than the mean age at onset of the 4 affected individuals, had no clinical manifestation of the disease. This incomplete penetrance has implications for genetic counseling, and it suggests that complex gene-environment interactions may play a role in the pathogenesis of PRKN EOPD. Multifractality is ubiquitously observed in complex natural and socioeconomic systems. Multifractal analysis provides powerful tools to understand the complex nonlinear nature of time series in diverse fields. Inspired by its striking analogy with hydrodynamic turbulence, from which the idea of multifractality originated, multifractal analysis of financial markets has bloomed, forming one of the main directions of econophysics. We review the multifractal analysis methods and multifractal models adopted in or invented for financial time series and their subtle properties, which are applicable to time series in other disciplines. We survey the cumulating evidence for the presence of multifractality in financial time series in different markets and at different time periods and discuss the sources of multifractality. The usefulness of multifractal analysis in quantifying market inefficiency, in supporting risk management and in developing other applications is presented. The radius R1.4 of neutron stars (NSs) with a mass of 1.4 M⊙ has been extracted consistently in many recent studies in the literature. Using representative R1.4 data, we infer high-density nuclear symmetry energy Esym(ρ) and the associated nucleon specific energy E0(ρ) in symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) within a Bayesian statistical approach using an explicitly isospin-dependent parametric equation of state (EOS) for nucleonic matter. We found the following. (1) The available astrophysical data can already significantly improve our current knowledge about the EOS in the density range of ρ0 − 2.5ρ0. In particular, the symmetry energy at twice the saturation density ρ0 of nuclear matter is determined to be Esym(2ρ0)= MeV at a 68% confidence level. (2) A precise measurement of R1.4 alone with a 4% 1σ statistical error but no systematic error will not greatly improve the constraints on the EOS of dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter compared to what we extracted from using the available radius data. (3) The R1.4 radius data and other general conditions, such as the observed NS maximum mass and causality condition, introduce strong correlations for the high-order EOS parameters. Consequently, the high-density behavior of Esym(ρ) inferred depends strongly on how the high-density SNM EOS E0(ρ) is parameterized, and vice versa. (4) The value of the observed maximum NS mass and whether it is used as a sharp cutoff for the minimum maximum mass or through a Gaussian distribution significantly affects the lower boundaries of both E0(ρ) and Esym(ρ) only at densities higher than about 2.5ρ0. We introduce the concept of time series motifs for time series analysis. Time series motifs consider not only the spatial information of mutual visibility but also the temporal information of relative magnitude between the data points. We study the profiles of the six triadic time series motifs. The six motif occurrence frequencies are derived for uncorrelated time series, which are approximately linear functions of the length of the time series. The corresponding motif profile thus converges to a constant vector. These analytical results have been verified by numerical simulations. For fractional Gaussian noises, numerical simulations unveil the nonlinear dependence of motif occurrence frequencies on the Hurst exponent. Applications of the time series motif analysis uncover that the motif occurrence frequency distributions are able to capture the different dynamics in the heartbeat rates of healthy subjects, congestive heart failure (CHF) subjects, and atrial fibrillation (AF) subjects and in the price fluctuations of bullish and bearish markets.
