5. High Efficiency Operational Reserve by SOFC for the Effective Grid Integration of Variable Renewable Energies

Abstract

For an effective grid integration of a large share of intermittent renewable energy sources such as a photovoltaic and a wind power, the flexible operation of the centralized or decentralized thermal power plants are required as a control reserve of demandsupply balance (frequency control). It is cleared that the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and Gas Turbine (SOFC/GT) with additional air compressor system offers high efficiency in the wide range load operation. The efficiencyload ratio curve of the Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) and SOFC/GT with air compressor system are applied to the secondary control reserve (SCR) operation units, and the daily schedule of power units in the modelled power grid is calculated. Since the efficiency at low load is high in SOFC/GT with air compressor system, the total fuel cost of the modelled power grid diminishes in the case that the SOFC/GT with air compressor system is operated at low load as a load frequency control (LFC) unit for the SCR.

6. Comparison of ASCL1, NEUROD1, and POU2F3 expression in surgically resected specimens, paired tissue microarrays, and lymph node metastases in small cell lung carcinoma.

Abstract

Aims: Subtypes of small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) are defined by the expression of ASCL1, NEUROD1, and POU2F3 markers. The aim of our study was to explore the extent to which the intratumoral heterogeneity of ASCL1, NEUROD1, and POU2F3 may lead to discrepancies in expression of these markers in surgical samples and their matched tissue microarray (TMA) and lymph node (LN) metastatic sites. Methods and results: The cohort included 77 patients with SCLC. Immunohistochemical examinations were performed on whole slides of the primary tumour, paired TMAs, and metastatic LN sites. Samples with H‐scores >50 were considered positive. Based on the ASCL1, NEUROD1, and POU2F3 staining pattern, we grouped the tumours as follows: ASCL1‐dominant (SCLC‐A), NEUROD1‐dominant (SCLC‐N), ASCL1/NEUROD1 double‐negative with POU2F3 expression (SCLC‐P), and negative for all three markers (SCLC‐I). In whole slides, 40 SCLC‐A (52%), 20 SCLC‐N (26%), 15 SCLC‐P (20%), and two SCLC‐I (3%) tumours were identified. Comparisons of TMAs or LN metastatic sites and corresponding surgical specimens showed that positivity for ASCL1, NEUROD1, and POU2F3 in TMAs (all P < 0.0001) or LN metastatic sites (ASCL1, P = 0.0047; NEUROD1, P = 0.0069; POU2F3, P < 0.0001) correlated significantly with that of corresponding surgical specimens. Conclusion: The positivity for these markers in TMAs and LN metastatic sites was significantly correlated with that of corresponding surgical specimens, indicating that biopsy specimens could be used to identify molecular subtypes of SCLC in patients. Abstract

In industrial systems, certain process variables that need to be monitored for detecting faults are often difficult or impossible to measure. Soft sensor techniques are widely used to estimate such difficult-to-measure process variables from easy-to-measure ones. Soft sensor modeling requires training datasets including the information of various states such as operation modes, but the fault dataset with the target variable is insufficient as the training dataset. This paper describes a semi-supervised approach to soft sensor modeling to incorporate an incomplete dataset without the target variable in the training dataset. To incorporate the incomplete dataset, we consider the properties of processes at transition points between operation modes in the system. The regression coefficients of the operation modes are estimated under constraint conditions obtained from the information on the mode transitions. In a case study, this constrained soft sensor modeling was used to predict refrigerant leaks in air-conditioning systems with heating and cooling operation modes. Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a new similarity measure between words, and a graph-based word clustering method using this similarity measure. Our similarity measure is a quantification of the “mutual substitutability” of two words, and our graph-based word clustering method is composed of two steps. The first step is a building pairs of terms whose similarity measures are high into the connected graphs, and the second step is a division of the connected graphs by estimating the density of their edges. Here we report on the results of experiments in which we compared our method with existing techniques. In these experiments, we attempted to acquire the lexical knowledge from aviation incident reports. Abstract

We present the efficient technique to extract the signal of the intermediate mass Higgs boson from the backgrounds at future $\gamma \gamma$ colliders. For a clear Higgs detection, it is important to fit the original electron accelerator energy depending on the Higgs mass, to set the polarization of the photon beams and to apply the efficient $b$ quark tagging method. We demonstrate the extraction of information of Higgs parameters and the new physics from the observable physical quantities. Abstract

The thermal stability factor (Ku V/kB T, where Ku, V, kB, and T are the magnetic anisotropy constant, particle volume, Boltzmann constant, and temperature, respectively), obtained from the dependence of remanence coercivity on time, is generally assumed to correlate with the signal decay rate. However, some data fail to explain the relation between the thermal stability factor and the signal decay rate, especially when Barium ferrite particles are used as magnetic particles in recording media. This study reveals that the distribution of the thermal stability factor is the key to explaining these phenomena. Cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the thermal stability factor for various Barium ferrite particles were measured, and a good correlation between the signal decay rate and the value of the 10th percentile in the CDF of the thermal stability factor was confirmed for each particle ensemble. This indicates that the measureable signal decay rate in a practical time period usually depends solely on the lower range of values for the thermal stability factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Conclusions: A final incidence of bilateral involvement was 20.7%. Episodic spells of vertigo were completely controlled in 23 of 29 patients, while 11 of 29 patients demonstrated over 70 dB hearing loss. Objective: To analyze the clinical course of 29 patients with Meniere's disease during follow-up of 10 years or more. Methods: The subjects were 29 patients with a mean follow-up of 18.3 years. The hearing level was measured by the pure tone average (PTA) of four frequencies at the initial and the final examination, and it was classified into four categories according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Society (AAO-HNS) criteria. The control of vertigo was evaluated by the modified AAO-HNS criteria. Results: At enrolment two patients had bilateral involvement. In the period of follow-up, bilateral involvement emerged in four more patients. The hearing levels at the final examinations were as follows: 3 patients, <25 dB; 6 patients, 26-40 dB; 9 patients, 41-70 dB; and 11 patients, >70 dB. The control of vertigo according to the modified AAO-HNS guideline was class A in 23 patients, class B in 2 patients, and class C in 1 patient; the remaining 3 patients could not be evaluated. Abstract

This paper is concerned with the application of the parameter-free genetic algorithm (PfGA) proposed by Sawai and colleagues and the parallel distributed PfGA, to the fixed channel assignment problem. The results of the investigation are presented. The PfGA does not include parameters such as the population size, the crossover rate, and the mutation rate, which have been indispensable in the conventional genetic algorithm (GA). This eliminates parameter tuning for each problem, which is a very useful property in practice. Although the applications of PfGA to function optimization in 5 to 10 dimensions have been reported, there has been no report on the performance when it is applied to combinatorial optimization with a larger search space, and it remains a practically important problem to examine the performance in such a case. This paper considers the application of the PfGA to the fixed channel assignment problem, which is a combinatorial optimization problem. The sequence representation by the random keys is investigated, and it is shown that the PfGA and the parallel distributed PfGA have as high a performance in the fixed channel assignment problem as in the function optimization problem. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The unit commitment problem consists of determining the schedules for power generating units and the generating level of each unit. The decisions concern which units to commit during each time period and at what level to generate power to meet the electricity demand. The problem is a typical scheduling problem in an electric power system. The electric power industry is undergoing restructuring and deregulation. This article developes a stochastic programming model which incorporates power trading. The uncertainty of electric power demand or electricity price are incorporated into the unit commitment problem. It is assumed that demand and price uncertainty can be represented by a scenario tree. A stochastic integer programming model is proposed in which the objective is to maximize expected profits. In this model, on/off decisions for each generator are made in the first stage. Abstract

In this paper, we propose an efficient genetic algorithm (GA) for a fixed frequency assignment problem with limited bandwidth constraint. We propose a new GA-based algorithm for the problem of minimizing the weighted sum of damage due to interference and damage due to blocked call, which was formulated by Jin and colleagues. The proposed algorithm, which uses a steady-state GA that adaptively controls the mutation rate to search for an appropriate instruction sequence for a virtual machine performing the frequency assignment work, introduces a solution improvement algorithm based on a local search. The results of applying the proposed algorithm to benchmark problems, which show better performance than the existing GAs, indicate that this is an efficient algorithm. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
