Culture and heritage language (HL) preservation are crucial to developing children of immigrants' ethnic and social identity, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering family and ethnic community support. However, numerous challenges permeate the experiences of underrepresented ethnolinguistic groups like Brazilian immigrants who are largely invisible in the United States. Therefore, this study investigated the lived experiences of second-generation Brazilian adolescents with culture and HL preservation. In-depth interviews and a focus group were conducted with 13 participants. The findings highlighted the participants' embrace of their Brazilian ethnic identity and rejection of their American citizenship, and emphasized HL in affirming their identities and confronting discrimination. Objective: The objective of this study is to estimate health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) by continuous BMI by age, sex, and demographic group in the United States. Methods: We estimated HRQoL (overall and by domain) by continuous BMI using SF‐6D (Short‐Form Six‐Dimension) data from 182,778 respondents ages 18 years and older from the repeated cross‐sectional Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) 2008 to 2016. We adjusted for BMI self‐report bias and for potential confounding between BMI and HRQoL. Results: We found an inverse J‐shaped curve of HRQoL by BMI, with lower values for female individuals and the highest health utilities occurring at BMI of 20.4 kg/m2 (95% CI: 20.32–20.48) for female individuals and 26.5 kg/m2 (95% CI: 26.45–26.55) for male individuals. By BMI category, excess weight contributed to HRQoL loss of 0.0349 for obesity overall, rising to 0.0724 for class III obesity. By domain, pain was the largest cause of HRQoL loss for obesity (26%), followed by role limitations (22%). Conclusions: HRQoL is lower for people with excess body weight across a broad range of ages and BMI levels, especially at high levels of BMI, with pain being the largest driver of HRQoL loss. These findings highlight the importance of promoting a healthy weight for the entire population while also targeting efforts to prevent extreme weight gain over the life course. Telehealth services are a growing aspect of the US healthcare delivery system. Some rural patients, however, lack proper internet speed in their home to access telehealth services and need alternative telehealth access points. Public libraries can be an alternative telehealth access point due to their access to high-speed internet services; however, these programs often experience limited success due to a lack of planning with community health providers and local health organizations. This article describes a novel workbook that guides public libraries to collaborate with community stakeholders when considering the implementation of telehealth services. Development of the workbook leveraged expertise of library and public health professionals. Engineering electronic bandgaps is crucial for applications in information technology, sensing, and renewable energy. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer a versatile platform for bandgap modulation through alloying, doping, and heterostructure formation. Here, the synthesis of a 2D MoxW1‐xS2 graded alloy is reported, featuring a Mo‐rich center that transitions to W‐rich edges, achieving a tunable bandgap of 1.85 to 1.95 eV when moving from the center to the edge of the flake. Aberration‐corrected high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of sulfur monovacancy, VS, whose concentration varied across the graded MoxW1‐xS2 layer as a function of Mo content with the highest value in the Mo‐rich center region. Optical spectroscopy measurements supported by ab initio calculations reveal a doublet electronic state of VS, which is split due to the spin‐orbit interaction, with energy levels close to the conduction band or deep in the bandgap depending on whether the vacancy is surrounded by W atoms or Mo atoms. This unique electronic configuration of VS in the alloy gave rise to four spin‐allowed optical transitions between the VS levels and the valence bands. Traditionally, condition monitoring of wind turbines has been performed manually by certified rope teams. This method of inspection can be dangerous for the personnel involved, and the resulting downtime can be expensive. Wind turbine inspection can be performed using autonomous drones to achieve lower downtime, cost, and health risks. To enable autonomy, the field of drone path planning can be assisted by this research, namely machine learning that detects wind turbines present in aerial RGB images taken by the drone before performing the maneuvering for turbine inspection. For this task, the effectiveness of two deep learning architectures is evaluated in this paper both without and with a proposed fuzzy contrast enhancement (FCE) image preprocessing algorithm. Efforts are focused on two convolutional neural network (CNN) variants: VGG19 and Xception. A more traditional approach involving support vector machines (SVM) is also included to contrast a machine learning approach with our deep learning networks. The authors created a novel dataset of 4500 RGB images of size 210 × 210 to train and evaluate the performance of these networks on wind turbine detection. The dataset is captured in an environment mimicking that of a wind turbine farm, and consists of two classes of images: with and without a small-scale wind turbine (12V Primus Air Max) assembled at Utah Valley University. The images were used to describe in detail the analysis and implementation of the VGG19, Xception, and SVM algorithms using different optimization, model training, and hyperparameter tuning technologies. Social media platforms are suspected to derive hefty profits from youth users who may be vulnerable to negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Platforms, however, are not required to make these data publicly available, which may limit the abilities of researchers and policymakers to adequately investigate and regulate platform practices. This study aimed to estimate the number of U.S.-based child (0–12 years old) and adolescent (13–17 years old) users and the annual advertising revenue generated from youth across six major platforms. Data were drawn from public survey and market research sources conducted in 2021 and 2022. A simulation analysis was conducted to derive estimates of the number of users and the annual advertising revenue per age group and overall (ages 0–17 years) for 2022. The findings reveal that, across six major social media platforms, the 2022 annual advertising revenue from youth users ages 0–17 years is nearly $11 billion. Approximately 30–40% of the advertising revenue generated from three social media platforms is attributable to young people. Our findings highlight the need for greater transparency from social media platforms as well as regulation of potentially harmful advertising practices that may exploit vulnerable child and adolescent social media users. A large body of evidence finds that relative mobility in the US has declined over the past 150 years. However, long-run mobility estimates are usually based on White samples and therefore do not account for the limited opportunities available for nonwhite families. Moreover, historical data measure the father's status with error, which biases estimates toward greater mobility. Using linked census data from 1850 to 1940, I show that accounting for race and measurement error can double estimates of intergenerational persistence. Objective: This study aimed to estimate the 10‐year cost‐effectiveness of school‐based BMI report cards, a commonly implemented program for childhood obesity prevention in the US where student BMI is reported to parents/guardians by letter with nutrition and physical activity resources, for students in grades 3 to 7. Methods: A microsimulation model, using data inputs from evidence reviews on health impacts and costs, estimated: how many students would be reached if the 15 states currently measuring student BMI (but not reporting to parents/guardians) implemented BMI report cards from 2023 to 2032; how many cases of childhood obesity would be prevented; expected changes in childhood obesity prevalence; and costs to society. Results: BMI report cards were projected to reach 8.3 million children with overweight or obesity (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 7.7–8.9 million) but were not projected to prevent any cases of childhood obesity or significantly decrease childhood obesity prevalence. Ten‐year costs totaled $210 million (95% UI: $30.5–$408 million) or $3.33 per child per year with overweight or obesity (95% UI: $3.11–$3.68). Conclusions: School‐based BMI report cards are not cost‐effective childhood obesity interventions. Deimplementation should be considered to free up resources for implementing effective programs.
