Abstract

International audience; A detailed $\alpha$-decay spectroscopy study of $^{180}\mathrm{Tl}$ has been performed at ISOLDE (CERN). $Z$-selective ionization by the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) coupled to mass separation provided a high-purity beam of $^{180}\mathrm{Tl}$. Fine-structure $\alpha$ decays to excited levels in the daughter $^{176}\mathrm{Au}$ were identified and an $\alpha$-decay scheme of $^{180}\mathrm{Tl}$ was constructed based on an analysis of $\alpha$-$\gamma$ and $\alpha$-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidences. Multipolarities of several $\gamma$-ray transitions deexciting levels in $^{176}\mathrm{Au}$ were determined. Based on the analysis of reduced $\alpha$-decay widths, it was found that all $\alpha$ decays are hindered, which signifies a change of configuration between the parent and all daughter states.

Abstract

Abstract

The detailed analysis of the beta-delayed fission data of Tl-180 is presented. The experiment was performed by producing a pure beam of Tl-180 by means of highly selective resonance laser ionization followed by mass separation with the ISOLDE (CERN, Geneva) isotope separator. A surprising asymmetric mass distribution of fission fragments from Hg-180, the daughter of Tl-180 beta decays, was observed. Here, the energy calibration of the silicon detectors, which is crucial for a proper determination of the fission fragments' energy and mass split, is presented and the total kinetic energy and its dependence on the mass split ratio is discussed. A more precise beta-delayed fission probability P-beta DF(Tl-180) = 3.2(2) x 10(-3)% was deduced.

Abstract

The beta(+)/EC decay of (180)Tl and excited states in the daughter nucleus (180)Hg have been investigated at the CERN On-Line Isotope Mass Separator (ISOLDE) facility. Many new low-lying energy levels were observed in (180)Hg, of which the most significant are the 0(2)(+) at 419.6 keV and the 2(2)(+) at 601.3 keV. The former is the bandhead of an excited band in (180)Hg assumed originally to be of prolate nature. From the beta feeding to the different states in (180)Hg, the ground-state spin of (180)Tl was deduced to be (4(-),5(-)). Physical Review C

Abstract

The $^{39}$Ar(n$_{\rm th}$,$\alpha$)$^{36}$S reaction has been studied for the first time. A sample containing $2.85 \times 10^{14}$ $^{39}$Ar atoms, was produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The number of $^{39}$Ar atoms in the layer was determined by measuring the $^{39}$Ar $\beta$-activity using a primary standardization method. Subsequently, the sample was irradiated with thermal neutrons at the High Flux Reactor of the ILL. An upper limit of 0.29~b was obtained for the $^{39}$Ar(n$_{\rm th}$,$\alpha$)$^{36}$S reaction cross-section.

Abstract

The energy distributions and yields of light charged particles emitted during thermal neutron induced fission of 245Cm have been measured at the high flux reactor of the Institute Laue Langevin in Grenoble (France). The detection of the ternary particles was done using a Delta-E/E telescope, permitting a good separation of the ternary particles. In this way, the characteristics of the energy distribution (average energy and full width at half maximum) for 4He, 3H and 6He particles as well as their emission probabilities could be determined. For the emission probabilities per fission, the following values were obtained: LRA/B=(2.15+-0.05)E-3, 3H/B=(1.85+-0.10)E-4 and 6He/B=(4.95+-1.25)E-5.

Abstract

The. O-17(n(th),alpha)C-14 reaction cross section was determined at the high flux reactor of the ILL in Grenoble relative to the known N-14(n(th),p)C-14 cross section. For the flux calibration measurements, N-14(2) from the air was used. The O-17(n,alpha) measurements were performed with several highly enriched oxygen gas samples. This resulted in a precise value of (244+/-7) mb for the O-17(n(th),alpha)C-14 cross section. [S0556-2813(98)05410-7].

Abstract

The fission cross section of 245Cm was measured at the GELINA neutron facility of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) in Geel, Belgium, as a function of the incident neutron energy. The energy of the neutrons is determined applying the time of flight method using a flight path length of about 9 m. A highly enriched 245Cm sample (98.48%) was mounted back-to-back with a 10B sample in the centre of a vacuum chamber together with two surface barrier detectors positioned outside the neutron beam. One detector measured the 10B(n,α)7Li reaction products for the neutron flux determination, while the second one registered the 245Cm(n,f) fragments. A control measurement has been performed replacing the 245Cm sample with a 235U sample in order to check that the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section can be reproduced. In comparison with previous 245Cm fission cross section measurements, our preliminary results show a nice improvement of the energy resolution, in particular below 20 eV where very few data are available. Abstract

During the last years, several Cm and Cf isotopes have been studied by our research group in the frame of a systematic investigation of gas emission characteristics in ternary fission. Here we report on new results on the energy distribution and the emission probability of 3H, 4He and He particles emitted in the spontaneous ternary fission of 250Cf (Eexc = 0 MeV) and in the neutron induced ternary fission of 249Cf (Eexc = 6.625 MeV). Both measurements were performed using suited and well-calibrated ΔE-E telescope detectors, at the IRMM (Geel, Belgium) for the spontaneous fission and at the very intense neutron beam PF1b at the Institute Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France) for the neutron induced fission measurement. In this way, the existing database can be enlarged with new results for Z = 98 isotopes, which is important for the systematic investigation. Moreover, the investigation of the ‘isotope couple’ 249Cf(n,f)–250Cf(SF), together with corresponding data for other isotopes, will yield valuable information on the influence of the excitation energy on the particle emission probabilities. Abstract

The minor actinide waste produced in nuclear power plants contains various Cm-isotopes, and transmutation scenarios require improved fission cross section data. The available thermal neutron induced fission cross section data for 243Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm are not very accurate, so new cross section measurements have been performed at the high flux reactor of the ILL in Grenoble (France) under better experimental conditions (highly enriched samples, very intense and clean neutron beam). The measurements were performed at a neutron energy of 5.38 meV, yielding fission cross section values of (1240±28)b for 243Cm, (25±47)mb for 246Cm and (685±84)mb for 248Cm. Abstract

Ternary fission constitutes an important source of helium and tritium gas production in nuclear reactors and in used fuel elements. Data related to this production are therefore requested by nuclear industry. In the present paper, we report results from measurements of the 4He and 3H emission probabilities (denoted LRA/B and t/B, respectively). These measurements concern both thermal neutron-induced fission reactions as well as spontaneous fission decays. For spontaneous fission, data are reported for nuclides ranging from 238Pu up to 252Cf. For thermal neutron-induced fission, results cover target nuclei between 229Th and 251Cf. Based on these and other results, semi-empirical relations are proposed. These correlations are only valid if spontaneous fission data and neutron-induced fission data are considered separately, which shows the impact of the fissioning nucleus-excitation energy on the ternary particle-emission process. In this way, t/B and LRA/B values could be evaluated for fissioning systems not investigated so far. The 41Ca(n,&agr;)38Ar reaction cross section was studied at the linear accelerator GELINA of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements in Geel (Belgium) and was determined up to a neutron energy of about 80 keV using the time-of-flight technique. In this energy region, 15 resonances were observed, whereas none were identified before. For some of them, resonance parameters such as resonance energy, total width, area, and spin could be determined. Abstract: The emission probabilities and the energy distributions of tritons, α and 6He particles emitted in the spontaneous ternary fission (zero excitation energy) of 250Cf and 252Cf and in the cold neutron induced fission (excitation energy ) of 249Cf and 251Cf are determined. The particle identification was done with suited telescope detectors, at the IRMM (Geel, Belgium) for the spontaneous fission and at the ILL (Grenoble, France) for the neutron induced fission measurements. Hence particle emission characteristics of the fissioning systems 250Cf and 252Cf are obtained at zero and at about 6.5 MeV excitation energies. While the triton emission probability is hardly influenced by the excitation energy, the 4He and 6He emission probability in spontaneous fission is higher than for neutron induced fission. This can be explained by the strong influence of the cluster preformation probability on the ternary particle emission probability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
