We investigate the precisely measured anomalous magnetic moment and Lamb shift as tests for the possible existence of the radiatively induced Lorentz and CPT violation effects in quantum electrodynamics. To this end we calculate the one-loop vacuum polarization tensor and vertex radiative correction in dimensional reduction and on-shell renormalization scheme. We explicitly show how the Lorentz and CPT violation sector affects the anomalous magnetic moment and Lamb shift. Remarkably, we find infrared divergences coming from Lorentz and CPT violating term that do not cancel in physical cross sections. This result appears to place stringent constraints on the type of Lorentz/CPT violating terms that can be added to the QED Lagrangian., 34 pages, RevTex, Figures drawn by FEYNMAN. We have investigated the perturbative ambiguity of the radiatively induced Chern-Simons term in differential regularization. The result obtained in this method contains all those obtained in other regularization schemes and the ambiguity is explicitly characterized by an indefinite ratio of two renormalization scales. It is argued that the ambiguity can only be eliminated by either imposing a physical requirement or resorting to a more fundamental principle. We find the inconsistency of dimensional reduction and naive dimensional regularization in their applications to Chern-Simons type gauge theories. Further we adopt a consistent dimensional regularization to investigate the quantum correction to non-Abelian Chern-Simons term coupled with fermionic matter. We perform two-loop calculation of Chern-Simons in background field method using the hybrid regularization of higher-covariant derivative and dimensional regularization. It is explicitly shown that Chern-Simons field theory is finite at the two-loop level. This retrospective study investigated the clinical significance and impact of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteraemia in 49 haematology and oncology patients at a tertiary referral medical centre in Taipei between July 1999 and December 2003. Sixteen patients had 24 episodes of central venous catheter (CVC)-related bacteraemia, with the main clinical characteristics being a nosocomial bacteraemia (100%), preceding antibiotic therapy (94%), bacteraemia developed in a general ward (87%), immunosuppressive therapy (75%), in-situ CVC-related bacteraemia (75%), and neutropenia (63%). Only four (25%) patients had inflammatory signs at the CVC site following diagnosis of bacteraemia. Five patients had recurrent bacteraemia, with risk-factors being long-lasting (>10 days) neutropenia (p 0.036) and an initial failure to remove the CVC (p 0.001). These cases did not involve re-infection, as the same S. maltophilia strain was identified following random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of the initial and subsequent isolates. However, relapses could occur after long latency periods (maximum, 200 days). Most patients were cured after removal of the CVC, even without appropriate antibiotic treatment. Physicians should have a high index of suspicion for CVC-related bacteraemia with haematology and oncology patients with CVCs and S. maltophilia bacteraemia. In addition to appropriate antibiotic therapy, removal of the CVC is crucial for successful treatment of CVC-related S. maltophilia bacteraemia and prevention of relapses.

Summary Objective To study the effect of intra-articular injection of meloxicam (Mobic) on the development of osteoarthritis (OA) in rats and examine concomitant changes in nociceptive behavior and the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in articular cartilage chondrocytes. Methods OA was induced in Wistar rats by right anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT); the left knee was not treated. The OA + meloxicam (1.0 mg) group was injected intra-articularly in the ACLT knee with 1.0 mg of meloxicam once a week for 5 consecutive weeks starting 5 weeks after ACLT. The OA + meloxicam (0.25 mg) group was treated similarly with 0.25 mg meloxicam. The sham group underwent arthrotomy only and received vehicle of 0.1 mL sterile 0.9% saline injections, whereas the naive rats in meloxicam-only groups were treated similarly with 1.0- and 0.25-mg meloxicam. Nociception was measured as secondary mechanical allodynia and hind paw weight-bearing distribution at before (pre-) and 5, 10, 15, and 20 weeks post-ACLT. Histopathology of the cartilage and synovia was examined 20 weeks after ACLT. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to examine the effect of meloxicam on MAPKs (p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)) expression in the articular cartilage chondrocytes. Results OA rats receiving intra-articular meloxicam treatment showed significantly less cartilage degeneration and synovitis than saline-treated controls. Nociception were improved in the OA + meloxicam groups compared with the OA group. Moreover, meloxicam attenuated p38 and JNK but enhanced ERK expression in OA-affected cartilage. Conclusions Intra-articular injection of meloxicam (1) attenuates the development of OA, (2) concomitantly reduces nociception, and (3) modulates chondrocyte metabolism, possibly through inhibition of cellular p38 and JNK, but enhances ERK expression.

SummaryObjectiveThe present study aimed to determine the role of excitatory amino acids (EAAs) and EAA transporters (EAATs) in an osteoarthritis (OA) model of rabbit knees.MethodsOA was induced in New Zealand white male rabbits by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) in one knee of one hind limb; the other knee left unoperated. Rabbits that received ACLT of knee were assigned to the ACLT group (n=6), while a sham-operated group (n=6) underwent arthrotomy with no ACLT.
