Along the shoreline of the White Sea, due to the post-glacial uplift of the coast, some water bodies with stable stratification have been formed. They have been classified as meromictic as they are at different stages of isolation from the Sea. As separation progresses, significant changes occur in the water column, including the composition of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and the structure of the aquatic microbial community. In this work, we searched for optical proxies of euxinia (anoxic conditions with accumulated hydrogen sulfide) in the water column of the meromictic lagoon on Zeleny Cape. The lagoon is separated from the White Sea basin by a shallow threshold that completely isolates the lagoon during low tide, but marine water enters the lagoon during high tide. The ecosystem in the lagoon is characterized by the marine salinity of water and a high organic matter content in the bottom water and sediments. In this study, spectral methods were used to obtain the depth distribution of CDOM, chlorophyll, and bacteriochlorophyll in the lagoon with strong water stratification and euxinic conditions in the bottom water. The measured optical CDOM characteristics were compared with hydrochemical data (water salinity, Eh, pH, dissolved oxygen), phytoplankton (oxygenic phototrophs), and green sulfur bacteria (anoxygenic phototrophs) distribution along the water column. The spectroscopic methods showed to have the advantages of not requiring water sample pre-treatment and allowing rapid sensing of CDOM and photosynthetic pigments at each horizon. We investigated the growth of Mo/Si multilayers (ML) deposited using a highly collimated flux of ion-beam sputtered particles for a wide range of deposition angles. Growth of the multilayers at normal and moderately inclined deposition is dominated by surface relaxation resulting in smooth interfaces of the multilayer stack. The first signs of interface roughening are observed at a deposition angle of 45° with respect to the normal to the substrate surface. At an oblique angle of 55°, the ML interfaces undergo fast progressive roughening from the substrate to the top of the ML stack, leading to the formation of ripples which are perpendicular to the deposition flux direction. Deposition of the multilayer at an angle of 65° results in a highly periodic lateral ripple structure with a period of 10 nm. The mature ripple pattern forms during growth of only the first few layers and then stabilizes. The ripples propagate through the whole ML stack with almost no changes in frequency and amplitude, resulting in a highly periodic bulk array composed of silicon and molybdenum nano-rods closely packed in a 6-fold symmetric lattice. In 2019–2020, we conducted a set of case studies devoted to the investigation and design of a methodology for GIS-based support of medical administration and planning on a city scale when accounting and controlling infectious disease. The studies were conducted for the administrative territory of St. Petersburg city (Russia), and were based upon the medical statistics data collected and accounted by St. Petersburg medical administration. The statistics included data on tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis infection. All the medical data used in the study are impersonalized. GIS-based MDMS prototype was developed upon the QGIS software.Moving forward in the previously formed study direction, now we are working on MDMS interface redesigning to facilitate its usability. Current activities are focussed on incorporation of the Web interface into previously developed MDMS prototype. The paper discusses development of the Web GIS interface prototype, and poses feature research and development aims. First feedback collected from medicals makes it possible to pose a Web-GIS-based MDMS as more flexible and easy to use, in comparison to the desktop-GIS-based. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many technologies based on cells containing alkali-metal atomic vapor benefit from the use of antirelaxation surface coatings in order to preserve atomic spin polarization. In particular, paraffin has been used for this purpose for several decades and has been demonstrated to allow an atom to experience up to 10 000 collisions with the walls of its container without depolarizing, but the details of its operation remain poorly understood. We apply modern surface and bulk techniques to the study of paraffin coatings in order to characterize the properties that enable the effective preservation of alkali spin polarization. These methods include Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, atomic force microscopy, near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We also compare the light-induced atomic desorption yields of several different paraffin materials. Experimental results include the determination that crystallinity of the coating material is unnecessary, and the detection of C==C double bonds present within a particular class of effective paraffin coatings. Further study should lead to the development of more robust paraffin antirelaxation coatings, as well as the design and synthesis of new classes of coating materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies of lakes at different stages of separation from the sea have been carried out on the northwestern coast of Kandalaksha Gulf of the White Sea. At the end of the winter period, from March 16 to 29, 2013, the lakes Kislo-Sladkoe, Trekhtzvetnoe, Nizhnee Ershovskoe, Ermolinskaya Bay and snow near the pier of Pertsov White Sea Biological Station of Moscow State University (WSBS MSU) were studied. The isotope characteristics of the water of lakes, ice and snow, the distribution of salinity, temperature, and hydrogen sulfide content were studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
