Abstract

The focus of this project is to accelerate and transform the workflow of multiscale materials modeling by developing an integrated toolchain seamlessly combining DFT, SNAP, LAMMPS, (shown in Figure 1-1) and a machine-learning (ML) model that will more efficiently extract information from a smaller set of first-principles calculations. Our ML model enables us to accelerate first-principles data generation by interpolating existing high fidelity data, and extend the simulation scale by extrapolating high fidelity data ( 10 2 atoms) to the mesoscale ( 10 4 atoms). It encodes the underlying physics of atomic interactions on the microscopic scale by adapting a variety of ML techniques such as deep neural networks (DNNs), and graph neural networks (GNNs). We developed a new surrogate model for density functional theory using deep neural networks. The developed ML surrogate is demonstrated in a workflow to generate accurate band energies, total energies, and density of the 298K and 933K Aluminum systems. Furthermore, the models can be used to predict the quantities of interest for systems with more number of atoms than the training data set. We have demonstrated that the ML model can be used to compute the quantities of interest for systems with 100,000 Al atoms. When compared with 2000 Al system the new surrogate model is as accurate as DFT, but three orders of magnitude faster. We also explored optimal experimental design techniques to choose the training data and novel Graph Neural Networks to train on smaller data sets. These are promising methods that need to be explored in the future.

Abstract

Microbial carbonates are unique deposits formed by the direct or indirect action of benthic microbial communities. They witness early life since Precambrian times, and occur in a wide variety of environments - from marine to continental settings. Although their deposition forms a continuum through geological time scales, microbial carbonates dominate geological records when extreme environmental conditions prevail. Many studies have focused on the characterization of microbial carbonate fabrics and processes of microbial mediated carbonate mineralization in recent environments, but the presence of organic compounds in ancient microbialites remains often questionable. Moreover, microbial carbonates witness high spatial fabric heterogeneity at micro- and nanoscale and often the functional role of specific organic compounds in carbonate mineralization is not yet resolved. Additionally, diagenesis occurs at different spatial and temporal scales but mostly starts in nano- to micro-environments immediately after initial precipitation. This renders detangling diagenetic and environmental signals in microbial carbonates often difficult. This study highlights the importance of sedimentary petrography, multi-scaled X-ray computed tomography (3D-visualization) and Raman spectroscopy combined with geochemistry and experimental approaches to unravel precipitation mechanisms, environmental conditions and early diagenesis of microbial mediated Ca-Mg carbonates in extreme environments. The unique presence of Holocene and Pleistocene microbialites in the Danakil Depression (Afar, Ethiopia) at varying preservation states, evidences (1) the co-occurrence of both biotically mediated and abiotic driven mineralization processes through space and (2) a continuum between primary precipitation and early diagenetic modification through time.

Abstract

Thermo-mechanical reliability in advanced electronic packaging requires new materials testing approaches. The necessary understanding of the impact of very local material stressing on component reliability leads to the need of materials testing and characterization on microscopic scale. For example, defect initiation and propagation in multilayer structures as in WLP and flip chip technology, the influence of material migration to mechanical behavior or defect development in ultra-thin silicon dies often are not well understood. A key for micro materials testing and characterization is the measurement of strains and displacements inside microscopic regions. Correlation techniques (e.g., microDAC, nanoDAC) are one of the promising tools for that purpose. Their application potentials to micro testing for electronic packaging materials are demonstrated in the paper. More in detail, CTE measurement and crack testing are discussed. Abstract

Objective: The concept of perfectionism comprises high standards of performance as needed in medicine, but also concerns about making mistakes and dealing with social reactions about not being perfect. Perfectionism is associated with motivation and deep learning strategies but high expression of perfectionism has been found to be associated with symptoms of stress and anxiety in students. We aim to gain insights into the longitudinal development of different dimensions of perfectionism in medical students with respect to their way of medical school admission. Methods: At the Medical Faculty of Hamburg University, 167 undergraduate medical students completed validated questionnaires (MPS-H and MPS-F) of different dimensions of perfectionism and sociodemographic data including medical school admission procedures, personality traits (BSI-10 and GSE), and symptoms of depression and anxiety (PHQ-9 and GAD-7) at the start of their first year and at half term of their second year. Results: On average, after controlling for baseline and age, a significant decrease (p≤0.05) in Self-Oriented Perfectionism was found during the first two years in students who were admitted after a waiting period (M: -12.57; 95% CI: [-21.94 – -3.35]), by other ways of medical school entrance (M: -6.36; 95% CI: [-12.71 – -0.02]), by multiple mini-interviews (HAM-Int) (M: -5.52; 95% CI: [-9.90 – -1.14]), and by a natural science test (HAM-Nat) (M: -3.41; 95% CI: [-6.71 – -0.11]. Waiting period students also showed a significant longitudinal decline in the scale Personal Standards (M: -4.62; 95% CI: [-8.04 – -1.21]. Conclusions: Since medical students from all admission groups except from the high school degree group showed a significant longitudinal decrease in Self-Oriented Perfectionism, high levels of aspects of perfectionism associated with intrinsic motivation or deep learning strategies could be included medical school admission processes. Additionally, particular attention needs to be paid not to induce a loss of intrinsic motivation or deep learning strategies during undergraduate medical education., Zielsetzung: Das Perfektionismuskonzept umfasst hohe Performanzstandards, wie sie in der Medizin erforderlich sind, aber auch Fehlersensibilität und das Umgehen mit sozialen Reaktionen auf nicht perfektes Verhalten. Perfektionismus steht in Zusammenhang mit Motivation und tiefen Lernstrategien, aber eine hohe Perfektionismusausprägung wurde bei Studierenden mit Stresssymptomen und Angstzuständen assoziiert gefunden. Ziel unserer Studie war es, Erkenntnisse über die longitudinale Entwicklung verschiedener Perfektionismusdimensionen bei Medizinstudierenden in Abhängigkeit ihrer Studienzulassung zu gewinnen. Methoden: An der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Hamburg füllten 167 Medizinstudierende am Anfang ihres ersten und in der Mitte ihres zweiten Studienjahres validierte Fragebögen (MPS-H und MPS-F) zu verschiedenen Perfektionismusdimensionen aus und machten Angaben zu soziodemografischen Daten, die auch die Art der Studienzulassung, Persönlichkeitsmerkmale (BSI-10 und GSE) und Depressions- und Angstsymptome (PHQ-9 und GAD-7) umfassten. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with systolic heart failure and anemia have worse symptoms, functional capacity, and outcomes than those without anemia. We evaluated the effects of darbepoetin alfa on clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and anemia. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind trial, we assigned 2278 patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia (hemoglobin level, 9.0 to 12.0 g per deciliter) to receive either darbepoetin alfa (to achieve a hemoglobin target of 13 g per deciliter) or placebo. The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause or hospitalization for worsening heart failure. RESULTS: The primary outcome occurred in 576 of 1136 patients (50.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 565 of 1142 patients (49.5%) in the placebo group (hazard ratio in the darbepoetin alfa group, 1.01; 95% confidence interval, 0.90 to 1.13; P=0.87). There was no significant between-group difference in any of the secondary outcomes. The neutral effect of darbepoetin alfa was consistent across all prespecified subgroups. Fatal or nonfatal stroke occurred in 42 patients (3.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 31 patients (2.7%) in the placebo group (P=0.23). Thromboembolic adverse events were reported in 153 patients (13.5%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 114 patients (10.0%) in the placebo group (P=0.01). Cancer-related adverse events were similar in the two study groups. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with darbepoetin alfa did not improve clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia.
