Changes in climatic conditions increase risks associated with crop production in certain regions. Early detection of these changes enables the implementation of suitable adaptation measures in the local area, thereby stabilising agricultural production. Our analysis shows a significant shift in climatic conditions in Czechia between 1961 and 2020. We examined the changes in observed temperature conditions, precipitation distribution, drought occurrences, and frost incidents at a high resolution (0.5 × 0.5 km). The outputs show a significant increase in air temperatures and drought occurrence. Temperature totals above 5 °C in 1991–2020 were 15% higher than in 1961–1990. Furthermore, the relative change in totals above 10 °C was 26% after 1991. Over the last 30 years, drought incidence was four times more frequent than in 1961–1990, particularly in spring. In contrast, no significant changes in the distribution of precipitation occurred, and there was a slight decrease in the probability of frost during the growing season. Ongoing climate change brings warmer and drier conditions to higher-altitude regions in Czechia. Assessing climatic conditions on a global scale is less precise for relatively small and topographically diverse countries like Czechia due to coarse resolution. This study focuses on changes of biogeochemical parameters related to variable rainfall-runoff conditions and to land cover types for eight headwater catchments in Central Europe. Linear regression, Spearman rank correlation, principal component analysis and C/Q (concentration – discharge) hysteresis loops revealed the main relationships. The presence of peatbogs and waterlogged spruce forests had a decisive influence on the biogeochemistry (COD = chemical oxygen demand measured using the permanganate methodMn, humins, Fe, P-PO43− TP = total phosphorus, N-NO3−). The strongest positive correlation of organic matter and Fe is represented in a catchment with the largest area of damaged forest (70%), but with a smaller proportion of waterlogged areas (8%). High flow rates influence greater release of organic matter and N-NO3−. The catchment with the highest (80%) peatbog cover and the catchment that had undergone revitalization showed similar behaviour in terms of water biogeochemistry. The type of rainfall-runoff event affected the velocity of pH changes, whereas the variability in electric conductivity was also controlled by the catchment characteristics and hydrological preconditions. Changes in the frequency, magnitude, and seasonality of hydrological extremes are one of the expected consequences of climate change. Recent years suggested an increasing risk of drought occurrence and restricted water supply even in usually humid mountain regions. Our research is focused on the evaluation of regional climate change and its effect on hydrological drought characteristics in headwater areas in the Ore Mountains along the Czech/German border. The main aim was to evaluate and compare streamflow regime changes and trends in long‐term hydrological and climatic time series within selected sub‐catchments of the Svatava (Zwota) River, the Rolava River, and the Načetínský Brook (Natzschung). A comparative statistical analysis for the 1967–2018 period was performed using various homogeneity and trend tests. Longer runoff time series with earlier beginnings were examined for two catchments as well. The results pointed to significant, continuous warming in the region which is accompanied by decreasing trends in snow cover depths in the colder half of the year. Drought indices based on runoff data were derived in the Indicators of Hydrologic Alterations (IHA 7.1) software environment. The seasonality of hydrological drought occurrence changed markedly after 1992, when most severe drought events started to concentrate between August and October in the study area. Increasing trends in deficit volumes were found in two catchments characterized by lower elevation. Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in average and minimum flows in spring and summer months in all catchments observed between 1967 and 2018 despite relatively stable amounts of precipitation and land cover. In the context of the ongoing climate warming in Europe, the seasonality and magnitudes of low flows and streamflow droughts are expected to change in the future. Increasing temperature and evaporation rates, stagnating precipitation amounts and decreasing snow cover will probably further intensify the summer streamflow deficits. This study analyzed the long-term variability and seasonality of low flows and streamflow droughts in fifteen headwater catchments of three regions within Central Europe. To quantify the changes in the low flow regime of selected catchments during the 1968–2019 period, we applied the R package lfstat for computing the seasonality ratio (SR), the seasonality index (SI), mean annual minima, as well as for the detection of streamflow drought events along with deficit volumes. Trend analysis of summer minimum discharges was performed using the Mann–Kendall test. Our results showed a substantial increase in the proportion of summer low flows during the analyzed period, accompanied with an apparent shift in the average date of low flow occurrence towards the start of the year. The most pronounced seasonality shifts were found predominantly in catchments with the mean altitude 800–1000 m.a.s.l. in all study regions. In contrast, the regime of low flows in catchments with terrain above 1000 m.a.s.l. remained nearly stable throughout the 1968–2019 period. Moreover, the analysis of mean summer minimum discharges indicated a much-diversified pattern in behavior of long-term trends than it might have been expected.
