The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the relevance of the use of history in mathematics education. This paper presents an experiment carried out in France with sixth-grade students (n=108) in which an ancient number system is used, an approach that is commonly suggested in French sixth-grade textbooks but has previously been unassessed. Based on the data of a pretest and a post-test surrounding an activity on an ancient Chinese numeration system, a statistical analysis using Rasch modeling shows a specific added value of the history of mathematics for students with low abilities in mathematics. For these students, a significant increase in observed abilities of +0.67 logit in mean is measured with a large effect size (Cliff delta +0.52). This effect is then weighted by considering the regression to the mean (RTM) effect, leading to a value around +0.14 logit in mean and a negligible effect size (Cliff delta +0.10). So, this pilot study shows the important effect of RTM, which suggests a very strong rebalancing of students' results. In the last part of the paper, we discuss how RTM can nonetheless be positively interpreted in this specific context where students' disorientation is one of the purposes of history in mathematics education.

There is a paucity of information about milk composition and quality at the quarter level from complete milking of the udder, mainly because of the difficulties of sampling procedures which imply the adoption of a vacuum system connected to four independent buckets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of quarter position, intramammary infection status, and somatic cells on milk yield and composition at the mammary quarter level of Simmental cows. Milk samples were collected during three consecutive days, after milking individual mammary quarters of 10 lactating cows separately, for a total of 120 quarter milk samples. Samples were analysed for composition, somatic cell count (SCC), differential SCC, and bacterial culture. Somatic cell count was log-transformed to somatic cell score (SCS) to achieve normality of distribution. Sources of variation of milk yield and quality traits were investigated using a linear mixed model which included the fixed effects of quarter position (1 to 4), pathogen presence (positive or negative), and SCS class (low, medium-low, medium-high, and high). The interaction between cow and quarter position was included as random effect. Quarter position significantly affected milk yield, with rear udder quarters yielding more milk compared to their front counterparts, but with negligible effects on milk composition. Classes of SCS influenced milk composition, in a way that quarters with high SCS had lower lactose content and higher differential SCC. This study is a contribution towards the possibility to better understand physiological processes at cow udder quarter level.

Abstract P. aeruginosa employs specific quorum sensing (QS) mechanisms to orchestrate biofilm formation, enhancing resistance to host defences. In physiological conditions, QS molecules permeate the lung environment and cellular membrane to reach the cytoplasmic Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) that is pivotal for activating the immune response against infection. In pathological conditions like cystic fibrosis (CF) this interkingdom communication is altered, favouring P. aeruginosa persistence and chronic infection. Here, we aim to investigate the molecular journey of QS molecules from CF-like environments to the cytoplasm by quantifying via HPLC-MS the permeability of selected QS molecules (quinolones, lactones, and phenazines) through in vitro models of the two main biological lung barriers: CF-mucus and cellular membrane. While QS molecules not activating AhR exhibit intermediate permeability through the cellular membrane model (PAMPA) (1.0–4.0 × 10−6 cm/s), the AhR-activating molecule (pyocyanin) shows significantly higher permeability (8.6 ± 1.4 × 10−6 cm/s). Importantly, combining the CF mucus model with PAMPA induces a 50% decrease in pyocyanin permeability, indicating a strong mucus-shielding effect with pathological implications in infection eradication. This study underscores the importance of quantitatively describing the AhR-active bacterial molecules, even in vitro, to offer new perspectives for understanding P. aeruginosa virulence mechanisms and for proposing new antibacterial therapeutic approaches.

ABSTRACT: In modern breeding systems, cows are subjected to many stress factors. Animals fed a high-grain diet may have a decreased rumen pH, which would lead to subacute ruminal acidosis syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the evolution of microbial community composition in cows undergoing a dietary stress challenge. Twelve cows were subjected to a challenge period that consisted of a rapid change of ration, from a normal (45.4:54.6 forage:concentrate) to a high-grain content diet (24.8:75.2 forage:concentrate) to induce subacute ruminal acidosis. Individual rumen fluid content samples were collected before (T0) and during the challenge (T3, T14, T28). The DNA from rumen contents was extracted, purified, and sequenced to evaluate bacterial populations, and sequencing was performed on Illumina MiSeq. The effect of animal conditions on rumen microbial community was quantified through a linear mixed model. The acidogenic diet created 2 main clusters: ruminal hypomotility (RH) and milk fat depression (MFD). The microbial composition did not differ in T0 between the 2 groups, whereas during the challenge Ruminococcus spp., Treponema spp., Methanobrevibacter spp., and Methanosphaera spp. concentrations increased in RH cows; and Succinivibrio spp. and Butyrivibrio spp. concentrations increased in MFD cows. Prevotella spp. and Ruminococcus spp. were negatively correlated, whereas the Christenellaceae family was positively correlated with both Methanobrevibacter spp. and Methanosphaera spp. Moreover, the same diet affected cows' microbiota composition differently, underlying the impact of the host effect. Other studies are necessary to deepen the relationship between microbiota composition and host.

Abstract Animals’ ability to orient and navigate relies on selecting an appropriate motor response based on the perception and integration of the environmental information. This is the case, for instance, of the optokinetic response (OKR) in Drosophila melanogaster, where optic flow visual stimulation modulates head movements. Despite a large body of literature on the OKR, there is still a limited understanding, in flies, of the impact on OKR of concomitant, and potentially conflicting, inputs. To evaluate the impact of this multimodal integration, we combined in D. melanogaster, while flying in a tethered condition, the optic flow stimulation leading to OKR with the simultaneous presentation of olfactory cues, based on repellent or masking compounds typically used against noxious insect species. First, this approach allowed us to directly quantify the effect of several substances and of their concentration on the dynamics of the flies’ OKR in response to moving gratings by evaluating the number of saccades and the velocity of the slow phase. Subsequently, this analysis was capable of easily revealing the actual effect, i.e. masking vs. repellent, of the compound tested. In conclusion, we show that D. melanogaster, a cost-affordable species, represents a viable option for studying the effects of several compounds on the navigational abilities of insects.

Background: Formative online multiple-choice tests are ubiquitous in higher education and potentially powerful learning tools. However, commonly used feedback approaches in online multiple-choice tests can discourage meaningful engagement and enable strategies, such as trial-and-error, that circumvent intended learning outcomes. These strategies will not prepare graduates as self-regulated learners, nor for the complexities of contemporary work settings. Objectives: To investigate whether providing only a score after formative online multiple-choice test attempts (score-only feedback) increases the likelihood of students to engage in self-regulated learning compared with more directive feedback. Measurable outcomes included deeper learning, collaboration, information seeking, and satisfaction. Methods: Data in this mixed methods study were collected from nursing students through surveys, test results, focus groups, and student discussion board contributions. A quasi-experimental design was used for quantitative data, and qualitative data were analysed thematically against domains of self-regulated learning. Results and Conclusions: Students receiving score-only feedback were more cognitively engaged with the content, collaborated constructively, and sought out richer sources of information. However, it was also associated with lower satisfaction. In this study, minimal feedback created states of uncertainty, which resulted in the activation of self-regulatory actions. Implications for Practice: Providing overly directive feedback for formative online multiple-choice tests is conducive to surface-level learning strategies. By minimising feedback and allowing for extended states of uncertainty, students are more likely to regulate their learning through self-assessment and problem-solving strategies, all of which are required by graduates to meet the challenges of real-world work settings.

We examine the impact of credit mobility exchange programs' timing on students' academic performance, focusing on the moment in which students travel and the length of the period spent abroad. To provide causal evidence, we exploit unique data from more than 10,000 students from a well-known and internationalized Brazilian university from 2010 to 2020. By combing Propensity Score Matching with Difference in Differences techniques, we find that international mobility impacts groups of students differently. Students who travel closer to the end of their undergraduate courses benefit the most from the mobility experience, while negative effects are found for those who travel at the beginning of their university program. Results also show that, while student mobility impacts positively and significantly students who participate in programs lasting from one semester to 1 year, negative effects are associated with shorter periods abroad. Our findings also reveal heterogeneity across destination countries. Mobility has a positive impact on students' grades for those students traveling to English-speaking countries. Our analysis presents empirical evidence that can be used to design international student mobility programs, providing insights to policymakers engaged in maximizing their effects.

Abstract Colistin is a polymyxin antibiotic currently experiencing renewed clinical interest due to its efficacy in the treatment of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. The frequent onset of acute dose-dependent kidney injury, with the potential of leading to long-term renal damage, has limited its use and hampered adequate dosing regimens, increasing the risk of suboptimal plasma concentrations during treatment. The mechanism of colistin-induced renal toxicity has been postulated to stem from mitochondrial damage, yet there is no direct evidence of colistin acting as a mitochondrial toxin. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether colistin can directly induce mitochondrial toxicity and, if so, uncover the underlying molecular mechanism. We found that colistin leads to a rapid permeability transition of mitochondria isolated from mouse kidney that was fully prevented by co-incubation of the mitochondria with desensitizers of the mitochondrial transition pore cyclosporin A or L-carnitine. The protective effect of L-carnitine was confirmed in experiments in primary cultured mouse tubular cells. Consistently, the relative risk of colistin-induced kidney damage, calculated based on histological analysis as well as by the early marker of tubular kidney injury, Kim-1, was halved under co-administration with L-carnitine in vivo. Notably, L-carnitine neither affected the pharmacokinetics of colistin nor its antimicrobial activity against relevant bacterial strains. In conclusion, colistin targets the mitochondria and induces permeability transition thereof. L-carnitine prevents colistin-induced permeability transition in vitro. Moreover, L-carnitine co-administration confers partial nephroprotection in mice treated with colistin, without interfering with its pharmacokinetics and antibacterial activity.

Abstract Background Intramammary infection is the result of invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in the mammary gland and commonly leads to mastitis in dairy animals. Although much has been done to improve cows’ udder health, mastitis remains a significant and costly health issue for dairy farmers, especially if subclinical. In this study, quarter milk samples from clinically healthy cows were harvested to detect pathogens via quantitative PCR (qPCR) and evaluate changes in individual milk traits according to the number of quarters infected and the type of microorganism(s). A commercial qPCR kit was used for detection of Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma spp., Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Prototheca spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterococcus spp. and Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis. Quarter and pooled milk information of 383 Holstein, 132 Simmental, 129 Rendena, and 112 Jersey cows in 9 Italian single-breed herds was available. Results Among the cows with pathogen(s) present in at least 1 quarter, CNS was the most commonly detected DNA, followed by Streptococcus uberis, Mycoplasma bovis, and Streptococcus agalactiae. Cows negative to qPCR were 206 and had the lowest milk somatic cell count. Viceversa, cows with DNA isolated in ≥ 3 quarters were those with the highest somatic cell count. Moreover, when major pathogens were isolated in ≥ 3 quarters, milk had the lowest casein index and lactose content. In animals with pathogen(s) DNA isolated, the extent with whom milk yield and major solids were impaired did not significantly differ between major and minor pathogens. Conclusions The effect of the number of affected quarters on the pool milk quality traits was investigated in clinically healthy cows using a commercial kit. Results remark the important negative effect of subclinical udder inflammations on milk yield and quality, but more efforts should be made to investigate the presence of untargeted microorganisms, as they may be potentially dangerous for cows. For a smarter use of antimicrobials, analysis of milk via qPCR is advisable – especially in cows at dry off - to identify quarters at high risk of inflammation and thus apply a targeted/tailored treatment.

IntroductionThe identification of baseline prognostic factors in Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma could help in tailoring a risk-based approach as the therapeutic landscape expands. Currently, the International Prognostic Score (IPS) represents the most used prediction tool in clinical practice, but other potential baseline risk predictors have been identified.MethodsWe performed a retrospective analysis in a cohort of 274 patients treated with 18FDG-PET/CT-guided ABVD to assess the prognostic significance of the IPS risk factors, and to validate the impact of the peripheral blood lymphocyte to monocyte (LMR) and neutrophil to lymphocyte (NLR) ratios on prognosis definition.ResultsAmong the considered risk factors, stage IV disease (HR 1.83), leukocytosis (HR 2.28), anemia (HR 3.23) and low LMR (HR 2.01) significantly predicted PFS, whereas male sex (HR 2.93), stage IV disease (HR 3.00) and lymphopenia (HR 7.84) significantly predicted OS. A 4 variable and a 3 variable prognostic system was subsequently proposed for PFS and OS, respectively. In both cases, a stark decrease in the survival probability was documented as the score increased. Moreover, by selecting only the significant IPS items and considering a more recently proposed prognostic factor (LMR) we were able to better identify patients at higher risk of relapsing after PET/CT-guided ABVD.DiscussionAlthough the IPS was still able to identify a subgroup of high-risk patients within our cohort of individuals treated with PET/CT-guided ABVD, not all the risk factors that it considers were found to have an impact on survival times. Moreover, by selecting only the significant IPS items and considering a more recently proposed prognostic factor (LMR) we were able to better identify patients at higher risk of relapse, in an effort to contribute to the building of a modern risk prediction tool that can help guide treatment choices.

ABSTRACT: Age at first calving (AFC) represents the nonproductive period of ∼2 yr in Holstein cows, and thus, it has a relevant effect on the cost of rearing replacements in the dairy herd. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate genetic and genomic aspects of AFC in the Italian Holstein population. Data of 4,206,218 heifers with first calving between 1996 and 2020 were used. Age at first calving averaged 26.09 ± 3.07 mo and decreased across years. Heritability was estimated using a linear animal model which included the fixed effects of herd-year-season of birth and classes of gestation length, and the random animal additive genetic effect fitted to a pedigree-based relationship matrix. The EBV and genomically EBV (GEBV) were obtained, and they were standardized to mean 100 and standard deviation 5, where animals above the mean are those contributing to reduce AFC. Heritability estimates of AFC ranged from 0.031 to 0.045. The trend of sires' GEBV was favorable and indicated a reduced AFC across years. Approximate genetic correlations between GEBV of AFC and GEBV of other economically important traits were calculated on a subset of genotyped females born after 2015. Moderate favorable associations of AFC with production traits (0.39–0.51), udder depth (0.40), interval from first to last insemination in heifer (−0.43), and longevity (0.34) were assessed. Overall, the greatest lifetime productive performances and most favorable days open in first lactation were observed when heifers calved at 22 to 23 mo. In contrast, progeny of sires with GEBV of AFC above the mean yielded more milk, fat, and protein in first lactation, and had shorter days open than progeny of sires with GEBV of AFC below the mean. Results suggested that breeding strategies to improve AFC should be pursued, also considering genetic correlations between AFC and traits which are already part of the Italian Holstein breeding objective. The inclusion of AFC in an aggregate index is expected to contribute to enhance farm income.

Abstract The expansion of the CRISPR-Cas toolbox is highly needed to accelerate the development of therapies for genetic diseases. Here, through the interrogation of a massively expanded repository of metagenome-assembled genomes, mostly from human microbiomes, we uncover a large variety (n = 17,173) of type II CRISPR-Cas loci. Among these we identify CoCas9, a strongly active and high-fidelity nuclease with reduced molecular size (1004 amino acids) isolated from an uncultivated Collinsella species. CoCas9 is efficiently co-delivered with its sgRNA through adeno associated viral (AAV) vectors, obtaining efficient in vivo editing in the mouse retina. With this study we uncover a collection of previously uncharacterized Cas9 nucleases, including CoCas9, which enriches the genome editing toolbox.

Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase mainly found in the focal adhesion regions of the plasma membrane and it has a crucial role in migration and the remodeling of cellular morphology. FAK is also linked to several aspects of cancer biology, from cytokine production to angiogenesis, drug resistance, invasion, and metastasis, as well as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. The gene locus of FAK is frequently amplified in several human tumors, thus causing FAK overexpression in several cancers. Furthermore, FAK can influence extracellular matrix production and exosome secretion through cancer-associated fibroblasts, thus it has an important role in tumor microenvironment regulation. Although the role of FAK in solid tumors is well known, its importance in onco-hematological diseases remains poorly explored. This review collects studies related to FAK significance in onco-hematological diseases and their microenvironments. Overall, the importance of FAK in blood tumors is increasingly evident, but further research is required to confirm it as a new therapeutic target in hematological contexts.

O bário pode estar presente no solo como resultado de processos geológicos naturais ou por atividades antrópicas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os teores de bário em 34 solos da serra e oeste catarinenses e sua correlação com o pH, matéria orgânica, argila e saturação por bases. Para isso, foram realizadas coletas de solos no horizonte A em uma profundidade máxima de 20 cm, sendo secos em estufa, homogeneizados e peneirados. Os cátions Ca2+, Mg2+ e Al3+ foram extraídos com solução salina, o K+ em solução ácida e a acidez potencial com acetato de cálcio e as leituras foram realizadas no fotômetro de chamas e espectrofotômetro de absorção atômica. Para as análises de carbono orgânico total foi usado o equipamento Multi N/C 2100, o pH em água e KCl foi por meio de pHmetro de bancada, a argila pelo método da pipeta e o bário por digestão ácida seguindo o método 3050B e posterior leitura no ICP-OES. Os teores de bário variaram entre 18,73mg kg-1 (P19), que é um Organossolo Fólico Sáprico típico de área de mata nativa e 481,71mg kg-1 (P16) no Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico típico em área de campo nativo. O bário apresentou as maiores correlações positivas com o pH e com a saturação por bases. Os solos da região oeste apresentam maiores teores naturais de bário do que os da região serrana. Os teores naturais de bário nos solos podem variar mesmo em regiões próximas.

Short-term electricity markets are becoming more relevant due to less-predictable renewable energy sources, attracting considerable attention from the industry. The balancing market is the closest to real-time and the most volatile among them. Its price forecasting literature is limited, inconsistent and outdated, with few deep learning attempts and no public dataset. This work applies to the Irish balancing market a variety of price prediction techniques proven successful in the widely studied day-ahead market. We compare statistical, machine learning, and deep learning models using a framework that investigates the impact of different training sizes. The framework defines hyperparameters and calibration settings; the dataset and models are made public to ensure reproducibility and to be used as benchmarks for future works. An extensive numerical study shows that well-performing models in the day-ahead market do not perform well in the balancing one, highlighting that these markets are fundamentally different constructs. The best model is LEAR, a statistical approach based on LASSO, achieving a mean absolute error of 32.82 €/MWh, surpassing more complex and computationally demanding approaches with errors ranging from 33.71 €/MWh to 44.55 €/MWh.

Objective To estimate the cost-effectiveness of craniotomy, compared with decompressive craniectomy (DC) in UK patients undergoing evacuation of acute subdural haematoma (ASDH).Design Economic evaluation undertaken using health resource use and outcome data from the 12-month multicentre, pragmatic, parallel-group, randomised, Randomised Evaluation of Surgery with Craniectomy for Patients Undergoing Evacuation-ASDH trial.Setting UK secondary care.Participants 248 UK patients undergoing surgery for traumatic ASDH were randomised to craniotomy (N=126) or DC (N=122).Interventions Surgical evacuation via craniotomy (bone flap replaced) or DC (bone flap left out with a view to replace later: cranioplasty surgery).Main outcome measures In the base-case analysis, costs were estimated from a National Health Service and Personal Social Services perspective. Outcomes were assessed via the quality-adjusted life-years (QALY) derived from the EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level questionnaire (cost-utility analysis) and the Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOSE) (cost-effectiveness analysis). Multiple imputation and regression analyses were conducted to estimate the mean incremental cost and effect of craniotomy compared with DC. The most cost-effective option was selected, irrespective of the level of statistical significance as is argued by economists.Results In the cost-utility analysis, the mean incremental cost of craniotomy compared with DC was estimated to be −£5520 (95% CI −£18 060 to £7020) with a mean QALY gain of 0.093 (95% CI 0.029 to 0.156). In the cost-effectiveness analysis, the mean incremental cost was estimated to be −£4536 (95% CI −£17 374 to £8301) with an OR of 1.682 (95% CI 0.995 to 2.842) for a favourable outcome on the GOSE.Conclusions In a UK population with traumatic ASDH, craniotomy was estimated to be cost-effective compared with DC: craniotomy was estimated to have a lower mean cost, higher mean QALY gain and higher probability of a more favourable outcome on the GOSE (though not all estimated differences between the two approaches were statistically significant).Ethics Ethical approval for the trial was obtained from the North West—Haydock Research Ethics Committee in the UK on 17 July 2014 (14/NW/1076).Trial registration number ISRCTN87370545.

Abstract Background Toxoplasma gondii causes ocular toxoplasmosis (OT), involving inflammation, scarring, and retinal complications. The OT complications were retinal detachment (RD), and retinal breakage (RB). Surgical interventions like scleral buckling (SB) and vitrectomy are common. Limited understanding exists of the safety and efficacy of surgical management of RD/RB secondary to OT. Another complication is toxoplasmosis-related macular holes (tMH), with sparse evidence on surgical outcomes. This meta-analysis aims to clarify clinical characteristics, and surgical results, and enhance understanding of RD, RB, and MH secondary to OT. Methods PubMed, Cochrane, Embase and Web of Science database were queried for retrospective studies, case series and case reports that provided information on RD, RB and MH associated with OT and reported the outcomes of: (1) Retinal reattachment of RD/RB and tMH closure; (2) Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improvement; and (3) Complications. Heterogeneity was examined with I2 statistics. A random-effects model was used for outcomes with high heterogeneity. Statistical analysis was performed using the software R (version 4.2.3, R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria). Results Fourteen final studies, comprising a total of 96 patients were analyzed, 81 with RD or RB and 15 with tMH. Overall, surgical management was associated with several advantages: a high rate of retinal reattachment of RD/RB of 97% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 92–100%; I2 = 0%), retinal reattachment of just RD of 96% (95% CI 89–100%; I2 = 30%) and tMH closure 97% (95% CI 87–100; I2 = 12%). There were significant differences in BCVA after surgeries in studies of RD/RB (MD 0.60; 95% CI 0.35–0.65; I2 = 20%) and MH (MD 0.67; 95% CI 0.50–0.84; I2 = 0%). The overall complication rate associated with surgical procedures in RD/RB secondary to OT was confirmed to be 25%. Conclusions The systematic review and meta-analysis showed that the treatment approaches currently in use are effective, with a remarkable rate of retinal reattachment of RD/RB, tMH closure, and substantial improvements in visual acuity. More randomized, long-term studies on disease and surgical factors can provide valuable insights into their impact on anatomical and visual outcomes.

Abstract The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), contributing to disease progression and chemoresistance. Leukemic cells shape the TME into a pro-survival and immunosuppressive niche through contact-dependent and contact-independent interactions with the cellular components of the TME. Immune synapse (IS) formation is defective in CLL. Here we asked whether soluble factors released by CLL cells contribute to their protection from cytotoxic T cell (CTL)-mediated killing by interfering with this process. We found that healthy CTLs cultured in media conditioned by leukemic cells from CLL patients or Eμ-TCL1 mice upregulate the exhaustion marker PD-1 and become unable to form functional ISs and kill target cells. These defects were more pronounced when media were conditioned by leukemic cells lacking p66Shc, a proapoptotic adapter whose deficiency has been implicated in disease aggressiveness both in CLL and in the Eμ-TCL1 mouse model. Multiplex ELISA assays showed that leukemic cells from Eμ-TCL1 mice secrete abnormally elevated amounts of CCL22, CCL24, IL-9 and IL-10, which are further upregulated in the absence of p66Shc. Among these, IL-9 and IL-10 were also overexpressed in leukemic cells from CLL patients, where they inversely correlated with residual p66Shc. Using neutralizing antibodies or the recombinant cytokines we show that IL-9, but not IL-10, mediates both the enhancement in PD-1 expression and the suppression of effector functions in healthy CTLs. Our results demonstrate that IL-9 secreted by leukemic cells negatively modulates the anti-tumor immune abilities of CTLs, highlighting a new suppressive mechanism and a novel potential therapeutical target in CLL.

Electron-impact ionization (EII) processes are essential for modelling high-temperature plasma in quite different research areas, from astrophysics to material science to plasma and fusion research and in several places elsewhere. In most, if not all, of these fields, partial and total EII cross sections are required, and often for a good range of electron energies, in order to determine, for instance, the level population of ions and spectral line intensities in plasma under both local and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. To obey these needs, various kinds of semi-empirical EII cross sections have been applied in practice, often simply because of the large computational demands in dealing explicitly with two free electrons within the continuum. Here, we expand Jac, the Jena Atomic Calculator, to provide such empirical EII cross sections for (most) atoms and ions across the periodic table. Five empirical models from the recent literature have been implemented to support a simple and rapid access to the partial EII cross sections for electrons from a (partly filled) shell (nℓ)q as well as the total ionization cross sections. We here restrict ourselves to the direct part of the EII cross section, whereas the impact excitation of electrons with subsequent autoionization and the resonant electron capture with double autoionization have been left aside in this first implementation. Rapid access to the (direct) EII cross sections will help already to better understand the role of electron-impact processes in the diagnostics of fusion plasma or the interpretation of astrophysical spectra.

Pressure insoles allow for the collection of real time pressure data inside and outside a laboratory setting as they are non-intrusive and can be simply integrated into industrial environments for occupational health and safety monitoring purposes. Activity detection is important for the safety and wellbeing of workers, and the present study aims to employ pressure insoles to detect the type of industry-related task an individual is performing by using random forest, an artificial intelligence-based classification technique. Twenty subjects wore loadsol® pressure insoles and performed five specific tasks associated with a typical workflow: standing, walking, pick and place, assembly, and manual handling. For each activity, statistical and morphological features were extracted to create a training dataset. The classifier performed with an accuracy of 82%, and a re-analysis focusing on the five most influential features resulted in 83% accuracy. These accuracies are comparable to similar task classification studies but with the benefit of added explainability, which increases transparency and, thereby, trust in the classifier decisions. The combination of random forest and in-depth feature analysis (SHAP) provided insights into the importance of certain features and the impact of their value on the classification of each task. The insights obtained from these methods can aid in the design of pressure insoles that are optimized for the extraction of impactful features and the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in Industry 4.0 operators.

Abstract Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) has been extensively studied in both preclinical and clinical settings for multiple applications, notably as a minimally invasive diagnostic tool for tissue identification and disease delineation. In this study, extended-wavelength DRS (EWDRS) measurements of ex vivo tissues ranging from ultraviolet through visible to the short-wave infrared region (355–1919 nm) are presented in two datasets. The first dataset contains labelled EWDRS measurements collected from bone cement samples and ovine specimens including 10 tissue types commonly encountered in orthopedic surgeries for data curation purposes. The other dataset includes labelled EWDRS measurements of primarily bone structures at different depths during stepwise drilling into intact porcine skulls until plunging into the cranial cavity. The raw data with code for pre-processing and calibration is publicly available for reuse on figshare. The datasets can be utilized not only for exploratory purposes in machine learning model construction, but also for knowledge discovery in the orthopedic domain to identify important features for surgical guidance, extract physiological parameters and provide diagnostic insights.

The dysregulation of the immune system in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) often allows for the development of immune-mediated diseases. Among them, autoimmune cytopenias are the most common, but cases of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) have been reported. We herein report on a patient who developed a CIDP while undergoing ibrutinib treatment for CLL, prompting drug discontinuation. Steroid treatment and a rituximab course proved to be ineffective at obtaining long-term control of CIDP, but therapy with venetoclax and rituximab, which was started due to CLL progression, led to the progressive amelioration of the symptoms up to complete remission of the neurological disease.

Abstract This work presents the results of a transdisciplinary analysis performed on Harward’s Almanac (Dublin, 1666), an extremely rare volume currently housed in the National Library of Ireland. The uniqueness and historical value of the Almanac is related to the presence of nineteen handwritten poems, entered by an anonymous scribe. These record textually important English clandestine satire circulating anonymously in Dublin in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Following a comprehensive historical assessment, it appeared evident that the current order of leaves was incorrect. To reconstruct the correct order of the leaves, and hence the likely sequence in which the manuscript poems were inscribed, this study employed a codicological/paleographic analysis complemented by analytical (X-ray fluorescence, XRF) and statistical (Self Organizing Map, SOM) investigation. Specifically, point XRF analysis was carried out for each handwritten page of the Almanac, allowing identification of ink elemental compositions (iron-based ink) and successfully supporting the validity of historical hypotheses on the poems’ order of inscription. The statistical organization of XRF data by SOMs allowed easy bi-dimensional visualization of the data set (54 points) and identification of ink similarities, once more validating the historical assessment.
