The subject of this paper is the analysis of the influence of laser cutting of oak wood on its drying process. The subject of the research was the comparison of the drying process and the quality of the dried wood in samples cut by classical technology (sawing) and samples cut with the use of laser. The research was carried out on two sets of samples which were subjected to an identical drying process. Continuous moisture loss and final moisture attained, moisture gradients before and after drying, and internal tensions before and after drying were monitored by means of the fork test and the cut-test. The final moisture content at the end of drying was 8.09% for the saw-cut samples and 8.22% for the laser-cut samples, a difference of only 0.13%. The analysis of the individual characteristics observed showed that the influence of the cutting technology did not have a significant effect on the drying process or the quality of the dried oak sawn timber.

Reaction wood is a wood defect arising during the growth of the tree in the part of the trunk that is under tension (hardwood tree species) or compression (coniferous tree species). Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) tension wood has different anatomical and chemical characteristics than normal (opposite) wood. The difference in density is conditioned by the percentage of the gelatinous layer (G-layer). Fibre cells in reaction beech wood have a different cell wall structure and a different chemical composition. Tension wood cannot be detected by the naked eye. It is only possible to assume its occurrence based on the macroscopic characteristics of the logs, such as a woolly surface, taper or eccentric pith, and so forth. However, these are imprecise and unreliable methods that have minimal effectiveness, especially when shortening the length of the log for cut-outs. This study aimed to create a unique chemical reagent for the detection of tension wood in logs and timber and wood products immediately. The present research can contribute to the mitigation of flaws resulting from the reaction of wood in timber production while addressing noticeable constraints in manufacturing, such as energy resources and the availability of wood raw materials. This can be achieved through the efficient identification of reaction wood in materials. The colour change is only temporary and will fade over time. Spiral grains are one of the most important tree growth defects that can remarkably affect the shape stability of lumber. This growth defect is observed by an oblique arrangement of axially oriented cell elements in the wood. This research focused on identifying and measuring selected shape changes caused by the spiral grains in the log. Hornbeam logs with spiral grain and with no spiral grain aged 60 and 52 years were selected to detect shape changes. Following the research and the norms of STN EN 1309-3 (49 1013), DIN (4074-5), and ASTM D245, it can be stated that spiral grain is an essential factor affecting the shape stability of hornbeam lumber. In the case of lumber with spiral grain, the spiral grain increased by up to 8° within three months. The warp of both types (bow, crook) increased exponentially throughout the study, peaking between the third and fourth week with an increase in warp bow of 26 mm and 17 mm in warp crook. The article presents the impact of drying process and selected parameters on the color changes on the surface of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.). Three predetermined process conditions (modes), mild, normal, and intensive, were investigated. The experiments were conducted using a semi-industrial scale dryer designed at the Gdańsk University of Technology with a loading capacity of 0.55 m3. The drying process was applied to pine wood grown in the northern part of Pomeranian region in Poland. The specimens were selected taking into consideration the radial angle of the growth rings. During each drying mode, 25 pieces of wood with dimensions (thickness, width, length) of 0.03 m, 0.2 m, and 1.5 m, respectively, were dried. The total color change (E) after drying process and color saturation (h*) before and after drying processes of the wood surface was determined using the normalized CIELAB methods. The obtained results indicated that the color change of the pine wood surface increased simultaneously with the intensification of the drying process. However, the normalized wood quality after drying under intensive drying process conditions remained within the standard limits. The technology of high temperature drying has a great influence on dimensional and selected physical changes in tension wood. Article is focused on the measurement properties such as moisture content, color changes and longitudinal warping. The quality of beech wood is determined based on structure and properties of wood, frequency of defects in wood material. The tension wood is considered as an important wood defect causing negative alterations in solid wood quality and limits industrial application of wood. The different values of longitudinal warping which were measured after drying were higher in tension wood than in normal wood. Impact of radial and tangential angle of growth rings is non-significant factor.

This study focused on the impact of the wood sawing pattern on 50 mm thick beech timber, followed by cross-cutting on the 3 m long, 50 x 50 mm beech blanks. The study analyzed two methods of cutting patterns of beech blanks (parallel to the surface of the timber and parallel to the grain fiber of the timber) regarding yield values and the size of longitudinal warping after air-drying. The yield values were higher (from 65.14 to 72.70 %) when producing long beech blanks using the method of sawing parallel to the timber's axis (B) compared to parallel to the edge of the blank (from 60.38 to 68.40 %). Results showed that a crucial factor for choosing the cutting method (A or B) is the taper of the logs. For blanks with a taper ≥ 1.3 cm.m-1, it is more advantageous in terms of longitudinal warping and yield to use the method of sawing parallel to the timber's axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cost of raw materials has a major role in the wood industry. From this point of view, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct log-sawing pattern, which will optimize the sawing process and increase the quantity and quality of the material as well. For measurements, we used beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.). Beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) is the most common wood species in the Slovak Republic; the total amount in forests is 34.8%. Beech wood has a high frequency of defects, such as red false heartwood, reaction wood (i.e., tension wood), dote, cracks, and so on. This research aimed to analyze the effect of the log-sawing patterns of through-and-through sawing, cant sawing, and quarter sawing on the resulting quantitative–qualitative yields of beech timber. The results showed that the highest quantitative yield was observed with the cant sawing pattern, at 84%, which was, on average, 17.3% higher compared to other types of cutting. It was found that quarter sawing resulted in a higher qualitative yield compared to through-and-through sawing or cant sawing (V5 = 62.69% and V6 = 47.86%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of experimental research on the colour changes of beech wood at different depths of the tested layer are presented. Beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) dried in a conventional kiln was tested. Half of the wood samples were steamed prior to the drying process. Colour changes were measured at various depths after the face milling process was used to remove the material to expose to the deeper surface. The colour changes were measured based on the three-axis CIELAB system, recommended by CIE (Comission Internationale de l'Eclairage) and according to ISO 11664-2 and ISO 11664-4 standards. As a result of the analysis, four parameters were determined: the colour changes ( Δ E), the colour chroma (Cab), the hue angle (h) and the colour saturation (Sab). The performed experimental research revealed that the surface of steamed wood is more susceptible to colour change. The mechanical properties of wood have remarkable influence on its use in buildings. The improvement of the mechanical properties enables the reduction in the cross-sections of structural elements, particularly the increase in their load. The paper deals with the change in the mechanical properties of beech wood through the process of contact drying. Plate pressures of 1.0, 1.4, and 1.6 MPa at a temperature of 160 °C were used. It was found that contact drying increased the bending strength by more than 30% compared to convection drying. The value of Brinell's hardness measured on the surface of the samples increased by 80 to 98% after contact drying, and the measured values of impact toughness were higher, about 31.1% compared to the samples dried by the convection drying method. As a result of contact drying, the density in the absolutely dry state increased for radial samples by 102.3 kg·m−3 and for tangential samples by 83.1 kg·m−3. The bark as a product of the dividing of wood and cork cambium consists of a set of protective layers of cells, which protect the living tissue (cambium) from the external environment and separate the bark from the wood. The structure of bark as a component of a living tree is completely different from wood. This article describes the testing of the adhesion of wood/bark in the longitudinal and tangential anatomical direction during the dormant and growing season on three choice wood species (oak, beech, and spruce). The results show a remarkable influence of the wood species and anatomical direction, as well as period of vegetation (dormant or growing season). All wood species had higher values of shear strength in the longitudinal direction compared to the tangential direction. The highest average values in the longitudinal direction were measured in the dormant period for sessile oak (0.49 MPa) and beech (0.48 MPa). The lowest value of shear strength in the longitudinal direction was measured for spruce (0.36 MPa). During the growing season, the highest average shear strength values were also measured in the longitudinal direction at beech (0.46 MPa) and oak (0.39 MPa). The thermal treatment of wood changes its structure due to the degradation of wood polymers (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin), so the physical properties of wood are either improved or degraded. Color changes apply not only to natural wood, but also to such wood composites for which some amount of glue is used in their construction (e.g., plywood, blockboard or laminboard). This article is focused on the analysis of hornbeam and field maple wood color changes influenced by drying temperature. Two types of drying modes were used: hot-air mode where the temperature of the drying environment was 60 °C, and high-temperature mode with a drying temperature of 120 °C. The drying mode was divided into two phases depending on the moisture content of the wood. The compared woods had similar values of color coordinates at the beginning of drying. During hot-air drying, the largest changes in color coordinates occurred during the first 24 h. The total color difference between the color at the end and the beginning of drying was 7.3 for hornbeam and 11.1 for maple. The overall color difference between the compared woods was minimal. During high-temperature drying (120 °C), the color changes of the dried woods were more pronounced. In the case of maple wood, there was a very significant change in color and the value of ΔE* was twice as high as for hornbeam. In wood processing, wood is exposed to an environmental temperature of less than 0 °C for some time, which mainly occurs during the air drying of wood in the winter months, or when lumber is stored in wood piles outdoors before the kiln drying process. In these cases, the wood freezing process increases the degree of freezing of the wood, subsequently significantly affecting the process of its heating during further processing (for example, in the cutting process). The most common method is heating by humid air, during the hot air drying of wood. We analyzed the temperature profiles on a cross-section of wood and moisture losses due to the freezing process and the size of moisture gradients. We compared theoretical calculations of the time required for defrosting and heating of wood with the experimentally measured values. The results show that the moisture content (MC) of wood has a remarkable effect on the wood freezing process. In samples with an average MC of 35.47%, the temperature drop was faster. After 10 h, the temperatures on the entire cross-section of the samples reached the lowest value of −13.2 °C. In samples with an average initial MC of 81.38%, three stages of temperature reduction in the wood were observed. The temperature dropped and the lowest temperature of −20.11 °C was reached after 24 h. The defrosting and heating process of samples with lower MC was significantly easier. The desired temperature of 65 °C in the middle of the samples was reached in 2 h and 20 min. The total time to defrost and heat the second group of samples (MC > FSP) was 3 h 30 min. Beech wood has a high frequency of defects such as red heartwood, reaction wood (tension wood). For the experimental measurements four logs without visible defects like red heartwood, which can noticeably affects the measurements' results were qualified. The drying medium temperature in the first phase of the process before the moisture content of the specimens fell below the FSP was maintained at 45 °C. Then, the temperature was gradually increased to the maximum value 65 °C. The results showed that different initial wood moisture content does not affect to final value of tension and normal wood. The colorimetric parameter L* was much higher for tension wood. After steaming, there were greater differences in the colorimetric parameters, respectively, a* and b*. After drying the difference of all colorimetric parameters between tension and normal wood was significantly less. The color changes were only noticed in the surface layers of specimens. Differences were small, and thus, the impact of the tension wood on the color changes was not confirmed. However, since the lightness of tension wood plays a key role for its visual detection, it may be adequate to only measure the lightness parameter (L*). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The color changes of compression and opposite spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) wood were evaluated as a function of different drying conditions. Compression wood samples and their corresponding opposite wood samples from the opposite part of the log were compared after three different drying modes. The color of the samples before and after the drying was characterized using the color coordinates L*, a*, b*, C*ab, C, h*, Sab, and the color difference (ΔE*) in the standard color space according to the International Commission on Illumination (CIELAB). The drying temperature was the most remarkable factor for discoloration of the samples. The lightness (L*) of the samples decreased with increased temperature. However, darkening was more pronounced in the opposite wood samples. The overall color difference (ΔE*) was found to be higher in the opposite wood. This study examined the changes in the properties of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) after intense drying. Beech wood with false red heartwood was selected as the test specimen. The test samples had dimensions of 50 mm thickness, 180 mm width, and 350 mm length. The specimens were divided into two groups, false red heartwood and sapwood. These specimens were selected with different angles of the growth rings (radial and tangential). The results showed that samples with red heartwood, in comparison to samples with sapwood content, had a remarkable effect in covering. Observation of specimens with false red heartwood and sapwood before and after drying process revealed significant differences in color changes and measured values during the covering-slicing test, but not between samples with different growth ring angles. The influence of the impregnation process of pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) samples on the electrical resistance changes and the moisture-content measurement accuracy is presented in this paper. In this study, the resistances of impregnated and nonimpregnated green pine timber harvested from northern Poland were compared. An impregnation method based on a vacuum-pressure chamber was used. Copper salts were applied as the impregnated solutions. The obtained results of the electrical resistance comparison showed a dependence of wood resistance on the moisture content. Higher conductivity occurred in impregnated wood samples filled with copper salt compared with wood samples without impregnation. Noticeable differences in the electrical resistance values were observed when the wood moisture content was significantly above the Fibre Saturation Point (FSP). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structure of a bark as a component of a living tree is completely different from wood. Different structures significantly influence the physical and mechanical properties of the bark. In the processing of logs, it is in most cases necessary to separate the bark from the wood. Problems can arise mainly in the pulp and paper industry. The research focused on the impact of storage conditions on shear strength, showing that the value of shear strength decreased remarkably due to the storage. A decrease in strength can mainly be explained by the changes in the moisture content of bark, remarkably affected by the surrounding environment (climate). The research showed that three months of storage seemed to be the most appropriate and effective period for removing the bark in the case of beech logs and that a storage time of up to five months was the best in the case of oak logs. Beech wood is mainly used for furniture, plywood, decorative veneer manufacturing or packaging. Timber or lumber is traditionally dried in kilns by processes often taking several weeks. This research deals with more rapid process called contact-drying process. Drying was performed using the heating plates with a temperature of 160 °C and pressures of 1.0 MPa, 1.4 MPa and 1.8 MPa. The results were compared to conventional warm-air drying. The warm-air drying mode was divided into two phases, with and without free water and bound water in the dried wood. The density of the samples increased remarkably during the contact-drying. The effect of the pressure of the heating plates was substantial. The difference in the average density between the pressure of 1.0 MPa and 1.8 MPa was more than 22 kg·m−3. The pressure of the heating plates affected the process and the resulting change in the sample thickness. The change in the sample thickness was more considerable in the case of the tangential samples. The thickness did not increase significantly after air conditioning. During contact-drying, the hygroscopicity and absorptivity of wood reduced on average by 21.24% and 25%, respectively, compared to warm-air drying. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structure of wood can affect intensity of color change in remarkable ways. This article was focused on the analysis of the color changes red false heartwood and mature wood by different methods such as ΔE* (Total color difference), h* (Hue angle), C*ab (Color saturation) and Sab (Saturation). The aim of this study was to evaluate the color properties of red false heartwood and mature wood by using different chromacity coordinates. Our observations suggested that the density in the absolute dry state was equal between the red false heartwood and mature wood. The biggest difference was in the area of the free water domain, thus from an initial MC value to the fiber saturation point (FSP). The shorter drying time of the red false heartwood samples was caused by their lower initial MC. Due to the different MC, the temperature created a different color intensity of the compared samples.
