India has witnessed a dramatic expansion of higher education, and women have emerged as noteworthy winners in the process. This paper focuses on the role of female college education on four dimensions of marriage: age at marriage, autonomy in the choice of spouse, work and financial empowerment, and quality of marital relationship. The study uses a sample of 35,561 currently married women from the 2011-2012 wave of the nationally representative India Human Development Survey (IHDS). It demonstrates that higher education, particularly college education, enables women to lead lives substantively different from their less-educated peers. College-educated women marry at later ages, enjoy greater autonomy in choosing their husbands, and have a more egalitarian relationship with their spouses. Furthermore, the study finds that educational homogamy and hypogamy afford greater autonomy to women. Even without a concomitant increase in labor force participation, college education among women appears to have a transformative effect on marriage in India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Child marriage, defined as marriage under the age of 18 years, remains pervasive in India. Global evidence documents a negative association between child marriage and women's reproductive and sexual health outcomes; however, its relationship with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) remains underexplored. Methods We utilize biomarkers and self-reported data from the nationally representative National Family and Health Survey 4 (2015–2016) to examine the associations between child marriage and hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, asthma and thyroid disorder among currently married women (N  = 421 107). We use regression models adjusted for a range of demographic and socio-economic controls to assess the association between child marriage and NCDs among women in India. We further assess whether and to what extent these relationships are mediated by early motherhood using the Karlson, Holm and Breen method of decomposition. Results Child marriage was associated with hypertension [adjusted odds ratio 1.20 (95% CI: 1.17–1.24)], diabetes [1.29 (1.22–1.37)], heart disease [1.27 (1.18–1.36)], asthma [1.19 (1.11–1.28)] and thyroid disorder [1.10 (1.02–1.18)]. Early motherhood also increased the risk of NCDs among women. Furthermore, it emerged as a pathway linking child marriage with hypertension, diabetes and heart disease; however, it provided a partial explanation for the disadvantage associated with child marriages. Conclusions Child marriage emerges as a risk factor for NCDs among women in India. Health systems need to recognize the enduring influence of child marriages on women's health and ensure early detection and effective treatment of NCDs for this vulnerable group. Maternal education plays a central role in children's health, but there has been little research comparing the role of maternal education across health outcomes. It is important to distinguish child health outcomes from medical care outcomes. Health outcomes such as short-term morbidity and stunting are multifactorial in origin and determined by a range of factors not necessarily under a mother's control. Mother's education, given the necessary structural factors such as medical centres, is likely to lead to increased access to, and uptake of, medical services. Using data from the 2004-05 India Human Development Survey, eight separate logistic regressions were carried out on 11,026 women of reproductive age and their last-born child under five years of age. The results showed that maternal education had the strongest association with medical care, immunization (except polio) and iron supplementation for pregnant mothers, moderate association with underweight and weak association with short-term diseases and stunting. In addition, the study investigated whether maternal education impacts child health and medical care outcomes through the intervening roles of empowerment and human, social and cultural capital. These intervening linkages were found to be missing for short-term diseases and stunting, bolstering the argument that the influence of maternal education is limited for these outcomes.
