Incorporating variables such as temperature, prey availability, and habitat quality into growth models can enhance our ability to predict fish growth trajectories under changing conditions. Over the years, scientists have developed and improved upon various techniques for estimating the age and growth of fish. Recent advancements in modelling fish growth have ushered in a new era of precision in the assessment of age and growth among fish species. Traditionally, the assessment of the individual ages of fish has primarily been based on the analysis of calcified structures such as otoliths, scales, and other parts of the fish skeleton (e.g., vertebrae, cleithra, opercula, and spines) [[1]]. Target species diversification is essential for fisheries sustainability and fish market revitalization. Fish discards are a widely recognized problem resulting from fisheries worldwide, and are of major concern for all sector players, from administrations, to fishermen, and scientists. However, non‐target species are seldom studied, and information on nutritional profiles and seasonal changes in nutritional properties is generally lacking. This study assessed the seasonal nutritional composition of two unexploited (Serranus cabrilla, Capros aper) and three low commercial value fish species (Trachurus picturatus, Spondyliosoma cantharus, and Trigla lyra), captured on the Portuguese coast over 1 year. Significant seasonal variations were observed in the nutritional composition of all the species studied. Moisture and ash contents varied from 70% to 81% and from 5% to 13%, respectively. The maximum fat contents were 5% for C. aper and 4% for T. picturatus, allowing to classify all studied fishes as lean. The highest protein contents were recorded for C. aper (25%) and S. cantharus (20%). The unexploited and low commercial value fish species studied were shown to be good fat and protein sources, comparable to commonly consumed species, such as cod and salmon, having a great potential to become commonly consumed fish in Portugal. The depletion and overexploitation of several fish stock demands for a valorisation of non‐target and discarded species. Nonetheless, such species are often poorly studied, and information on their biological parameters must be gathered for effective population management. For 1 year, the reproductive strategy of the piper gurnard Trigla lyra and the red gurnard Chelidonichthys cuculus was studied by monthly samples obtained from commercial boats operating on western Portuguese coast. Both species showed a biased sex ratio towards females, especially for larger length classes. Length at first maturity could be estimated only for red gurnard (22.1 and 19.9 cm for females and males, respectively) because all piper gurnard individuals caught were mature. Piper gurnard showed determinate fecundity and a short spawning season, from November to February with a peak in January, whereas red gurnard showed indeterminate fecundity and a wide spawning season, from late December to May. The relative annual fecundity estimated for red gurnard (1893 ± 728 oocytes × g−1 eviscerated weight [EW]) was higher than the one estimated for piper gurnard (1018 ± 250 oocytes×g−1 EW). Although important information for understanding the species dynamics is presented in this study, additional information on other life‐history parameters and of species landings is required. The complexity and spatio–temporal scale of populations' dynamics influence how populations respond to large‐scale ecological pressures. Detecting and attributing synchrony (i.e. temporally coincident fluctuations in populations' parameters) is key as synchronous populations can become more vulnerable to stochastic events that can affect the viability of harvest and have profound consequences to community structure. Here, we aimed to estimate the level of synchrony in fish growth within and among species across 1 million km2 and identify the environmental drivers contributing to synchronous population fluctuations. We developed otolith increment‐based growth chronologies for two deep‐sea scorpaenid fishes (Helicolenus dactylopterus and Pontinus kuhlii) from geographically and bathymetrically disjunct populations in the northeast Atlantic (one species in three locations; two species with different depth preferences). We used hierarchical models to partition variation in growth within and between populations attributing it to intrinsic (age, species, population) and extrinsic (environmental variables) drivers. We assessed synchrony in growth variation within and among species and identified common change points in population specific growth patterns. We documented time‐variant synchrony in growth variation of geographically and bathymetrically segregated deep‐sea fish populations, lasting 25 and 18 years, respectively. The observed synchrony was likely driven by shared environmental forcing (Moran effect) as large‐scale climate indices (East Atlantic pattern and North Atlantic Oscillation) were important environmental drivers of overall growth variation while the onset of synchrony in growth variation was likely related to marine regime shifts occurring in a wide area of the northeast Atlantic that affected the entire ecosystem. However, our capacity to extrapolate growth information across species and locations was dependent on the timing and magnitude of environmental change. Developing a better understanding of the mechanisms driving growth synchrony is key to ensure sustainable management of populations in habitats that are fragile and highly sensible to environmental change, such as the deep‐sea. Community detection techniques use only the information about the network topology to find communities in networks. Similarly, classic clustering techniques for vector data consider only the information about the values of the attributes describing the objects to find clusters. In real-world networks, however, in addition to the information about the network topology, usually there is information about the attributes describing the vertices that can also be used to find communities. Using both the information about the network topology and about the attributes describing the vertices can improve the algorithms' results. Therefore, authors started investigating methods for community detection in attributed networks. In the past years, several methods were proposed to uncover this task, partitioning a graph into sub-graphs of vertices that are densely connected and similar in terms of their descriptions. This article focuses on the analysis and comparison of some of the proposed methods for community detection in attributed networks. For that purpose, several applications to both synthetic and real networks are conducted. Experiments are performed on both weighted and unweighted graphs. The objective is to establish which methods perform generally better according to the validation measures and to investigate their sensitivity to changes in the networks' structure and homogeneity. Climate change and fishing are drastically impacting marine ecosystems. Comprehending the biological consequences of these effects on commercially exploited fish is especially challenging. Here, we developed a 43-year otolith increment width-based growth chronology for one of the most important commercially exploited fish species in the Northeast Atlantic (European hake, Merluccius merluccius). Increasingly complex linear mixed-effects models were used to partition growth variation into intrinsic (age, sex, and age-at-capture) and extrinsic (environmental and biotic variables) factors, allowing age interaction with extrinsic variables to assess age-dependent responses in growth. Our results provided strong evidence that European hake growth is impacted by ocean temperature, namely sea surface temperature and temperature at depth, and species abundance (recruitment), with different responses depending on fish age. We found evidence that increasing ocean temperature could be highly detrimental for species growth especially during the first years of life. We provided insights into the effects of environmental and biotic factors on species growth variation. Such information is key to recognize the sensitivity of European hake growth to climate change, which may contribute to sustainable management policies for this valuable resource. The diet and feeding behaviour of the forkbeard Phycis phycis was studied based on 246 stomachs collected between May 2011 and April 2012 from a commercial fleet operating off the central west coast of Portugal. A total of 44 prey items were identified in the stomachs which were merged into major groups to avoid problems with low expected frequencies. The following taxonomic categories were considered: non-decapod Crustacea, Caridea, Anomura, Munida spp., Processa spp., Brachyura, Pisces, Trisopterus luscus. In order to investigate possible diet differences between fish size classes, a cluster analysis was performed using the mean abundance of each prey group by forkbeard 5 cm length class, and three length groups (LG) were obtained: <22.5, 27.5–37.5 and >42.5 cm. Seasonally, Caridea was the main prey group during winter and autumn while Pisces was predominant during the rest of the year. Caridea was the most important prey group for LG1 and LG2 while in LG3 Pisces was the principal one. The forkbeard feeding behaviour may be characterized as presenting a shift pattern from a more generalist diet (small Crustacea, mainly Caridea) in the young adults to a more specialist strategy (teleosts) in the adults. Salema, Sarpa salpa is a commercial exploited species in the Atlantic Ocean with little available information for the essential population parameters, such as age, growth and reproduction. The present study aims to describe these parameters for S. salpa obtained off the coast of Portugal. Ages were estimated from the whole otolith readings; the minimum and the maximum ages observed were 0 and 14 years, respectively, corresponding to 5.2 and 41.4 cm of total length (TL). Whole otolith readings and back-calculation approaches were used to estimate the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function and the Akaike's information criterion value suggested that the second approach was the best one to describe the growth of salema: L∞ = 45.07 cm, k = 0.14 year−1 and t0 = −1.43 year. The species is a protandric hermaphrodite and the sex change process occurred between 28.6 and 40.9 cm TL. A short spawning season was identified, extending from September to November. The estimated length at first maturity for males was 24.5 cm TL, corresponding to an age of 2 years at first maturity. The knowledge of population structure of a species is essential to effectively assess and manage fisheries. In the present study, genetics, by mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequence analysis, and body geometric morphometrics were used to evaluate the existence of distinct populations of the forkbeard (Phycis phycis), an important commercial species in several European countries, especially Portugal and Spain. For geometric morphometric analysis, specimens were collected in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean—Azores, Madeira and mainland Portugal, and for genetic analysis, these samples were complemented with samples collected in the Mediterranean Sea—Spain, Italy and Croatia, in order to cover the entire distribution area of the species. Body shape of the forkbeard from the Northeast Atlantic was found to be highly variable. This variation was probably associated with different environmental factors between the study areas. Despite morphological variation, a low genetic differentiation between samples from different areas was found, most likely due to gene flow that occurred in the past or with the demographic history of the species. Moreover, the presence of unique haplotypes in the Northeast Atlantic and in the Mediterranean suggests that recent gene flow between populations from these areas should be limited. Altogether, a high haplotype diversity, a low nucleotide diversity, a “star-like” network and the results of the mismatch distribution, indicate a possible signature of recent population expansions, which probably started during the end of the Last Glacial Maximum and led to the colonization of the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Carotenoids and retinol are considered biomarkers of fruits and vegetables intake, and are of much interest because of their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; however, there is inconsistent evidence regarding their protective effects against lung cancer. We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective studies of blood concentrations of carotenoids and retinol, and lung cancer risk. We identified relevant prospective studies published up to December 2014 by searching the PubMed and several other databases. We calculated summary estimates of lung cancer risk for the highest compared with lowest carotenoid and retinol concentrations and dose-response meta-analyses using random effects models. We used fractional polynomial models to assess potential nonlinear relationships. Seventeen prospective studies (18 publications) including 3603 cases and 458,434 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Blood concentrations of α-carotene, β-carotene, total carotenoids, and retinol were significantly inversely associated with lung cancer risk or mortality. The summary relative risk were 0.66 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.55-0.80) per 5 μg/100 mL of α-carotene (studies [ n] = 5), 0.84 (95% CI: 0.76-0.94) per 20 μg/100 mL of β-carotene ( n = 9), 0.66 (95% CI: 0.54-0.81) per 100 μg/100 mL of total carotenoids ( n = 4), and 0.81 (95% CI: 0.73-0.90) per 70 μg/100 mL of retinol ( n = 8). In stratified analysis by sex, the significant inverse associations for β-carotene and retinol were observed only in men and not in women. Nonlinear associations were observed for β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, and lycopene, with stronger associations observed at lower concentrations. There were not enough data to conduct stratified analyses by smoking. In conclusion, higher blood concentrations of several carotenoids and retinol are associated with reduced lung cancer risk. Comber is an important bycatch species in the trawl fishery both in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Age and growth studies have been restricted to the eastern Mediterranean and no methodologies were ever applied to ensure accuracy and precision. In this study a total of 471 otoliths from specimens ranging from 12 to 26 cm were used. Precision indices showed a high level of agreement between readers and no evidence of systematic disagreement was obtained. To estimate fish growth and due to the absence of individuals smaller than 12 cm, three approaches were used to estimate the von Bertalanffy growth parameters: whole otolith readings, back calculation and a combination of both methodologies. Akaike’s information criterion suggests that the back calculation approach was the best one for describing comber growth: TL = 25.26 [1−e(−0.21(t+1.72)]. Natural mortality estimates varied betweenM = 0.44 year−1andM = 0.48 year−1while estimates of the fishing mortality varied between 0.12 year−1and 0.16 year−1and the exploitation rate between 0.20 and 0.27. Samples of boarfishCapros aper, small red scorpionfishScorpaena notataand comberSerranus cabrillawere collected from monthly by-catch samples on board commercial trawlers off the western coast of Portugal. A histological approach was undertaken to study each species’ reproductive strategy and annual sexual cycle. Temporal variations of the gonadosomatic index and of two condition indices (hepatosomatic and Fulton's K) were also analysed. Results showed thatC. aperandS. notataare gonochoristic whilstS. cabrillais a simultaneous hermaphrodite. Fertilization is external and development of secondary growth follicles is asynchronous in the three species. Mass atresia characterized the end of the spawning season inS. notataandS. cabrilla. InC. apera high prevalence of atresia was observed throughout the year and was not attributed to regressing or regenerating phases or skip spawning events. The main spawning season of the three species was in the summer and it is suggested that spawning is related to upwelling. During the summer, the spawning interval was 1.09, 1.23 and 1.84 days forS. cabrilla,S. notataandC.aper, respectively. An association between processed and red meat consumption and total mortality has been reported by epidemiological studies; however, there are many controversial reports regarding the association between meat consumption and CVD and IHD mortality. The present meta-analysis was carried out to summarise the evidence from prospective cohort studies on the association between consumption of meat (total, red, white and processed) and all-cause, CVD and IHD mortality. Cohort studies were identified by searching the PubMed and ISI Web of Knowledge databases. Risk estimates for the highest v. the lowest consumption category and dose–response meta-analysis were calculated using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity among the studies was also evaluated. A total of thirteen cohort studies were identified (1 674 272 individuals). Subjects in the highest category of processed meat consumption had 22 and 18 % higher risk of mortality from any cause and CVD, respectively. Red meat consumption was found to be associated with a 16 % higher risk of CVD mortality, while no association was found for total and white meat consumption. In the dose–response meta-analysis, an increase of 50 g/d in processed meat intake was found to be positively associated with all-cause and CVD mortality, while an increase of 100 g/d in red meat intake was found to be positively associated with CVD mortality. No significant associations were observed between consumption of any type of meat and IHD mortality. The results of the present meta-analysis indicate that processed meat consumption could increase the risk of mortality from any cause and CVD, while red meat consumption is positively but weakly associated with CVD mortality. The forkbeard, Phycis phycis, is an important commercial species in Portugal; however, little information is available on its biology. Age and growth of the forkbeard from Portuguese continental waters were studied using 687 otoliths from specimens caught between May 2011 and December 2012. Otoliths were transversally sectioned, and assigned ages were validated by marginal increment analysis and edge analysis, and indices of precision were also calculated to corroborate ageing within and between readers. Validation techniques showed that an annual growth increment is formed every year, corresponding to the succession of an opaque and a translucent growth zone. Specimens ranged from 15.5 to 67.1 cm total length (TL), and their estimated ages ranged between 0 and 18 years. The forkbeard is a relatively slow growing, long lived species, that does not show sexual dimorphism in growth. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated for forkbeard from the Portuguese continental waters were L∞ = 75.14 cm TL, k = 0.10 yr−1 and t0 = −2.09 yr. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The understanding of the stock structure of a species is essential to effectively manage fisheries. Otolith shape analysis has been successfully applied in stock identification using the elliptic Fourier analysis. This method was used to assess possible differences in the otolith shape of Helicolenus dactylopterus caught around the Azores, Madeira and mainland Portugal. A total of 294 individuals ranging from 23 to 29 cm in total length, equally distributed by sex and area, were analysed. The multivariate analysis of variance performed on the otolith normalized elliptic Fourier descriptors (NEFDs) revealed significant differences for both area and sex, but no interaction was found between the two factors. In the canonical discriminant analysis an overall classification success of 69.4% and 66.7% was achieved for females and males respectively. These results suggest the usefulness of otolith shape analysis for stock differentiation of bluemouth from Portuguese waters. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Age and growth of bluemouth, Helicolenus dactylopterus, from the Portuguese continental slope. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 524–531. In all, 933 bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus) were obtained from bottom-trawl research surveys along the Portuguese continental slope between October 2005 and February 2007 and from commercial landings. Age was determined by reading whole sagittal otoliths, and age estimates were validated by daily growth increment (DGI) analysis. Fish ranged from 5.2 to 44.9 cm, which corresponded to fish between 0 and 30 years old. The mean total length obtained from DGI analysis for age class 1 fish was 8.6 cm, corresponding to otoliths with a mean radius of 1.8 mm. As no statistical differences between sex were observed, the von Bertalanffy growth equation fitted was Lt = 45.50[1 − e−0.05(t+4.01)]. Comparisons with other studies using Hotelling's T2 test and the growth perform index (Ф) are drawn. The growth rates estimated in this study using whole otolith readings were the lowest of all the studies available, and the estimated L∞ is lower then those obtained for Azorean waters and higher than those published for the Mediterranean. Growth modelling is essential to inform fisheries management but is often hampered by sampling biases and imperfect data. Additional methods such as interpolating data through back-calculation may be used to account for sampling bias but are often complex and time-consuming. Here, we present an approach to improve plausibility in growth estimates when small individuals are under-sampled, based on Bayesian fitting growth models using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) with informative priors on growth parameters. Focusing on the blue jack mackerel, Trachurus picturatus, which is an important commercial fish in the southern northeast Atlantic, this Bayesian approach was evaluated in relation to standard growth model fitting methods, using both direct readings and back-calculation data. Matched growth parameter estimates were obtained with the von Bertalanffy growth function applied to back-calculated length at age and the Bayesian fitting, using MCMC to direct age readings, with both outperforming all other methods assessed. These results indicate that Bayesian inference may be a powerful addition in growth modelling using imperfect data and should be considered further in age and growth studies, provided relevant biological information can be gathered and included in the analyses.
