The possible presence of contaminants, pesticide residues and mycotoxins, in agricultural commodities is a critical issue for food safety, causing great concern. In this work, a simple and rapid analytical method employing liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of pesticide residues and mycotoxins in apples. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was used for sample preparation. The MAE protocol was optimized after evaluating the effects of the following extraction parameters: (a) extraction solvent, (b) acidic environment, (c) temperature, and (d) extraction time. The multiresidue MAE-LC-MS/MS method was validated for linearity, accuracy (bias and precision), limits of detection (LODs), limits of quantification (LOQs), and matrix effect. The validation of the method was carried out according to the SANTE/12682/2019 document. The method demonstrated good linearity with R2 ≥ 0.99, acceptable accuracy in the recovery rate range 70–116%, acceptable interassay precision with RSD% ≤ 20, and low LODs and LOQs in the ranges 0.005–0.015 μg/g and 0.01–0.03 μg/g, respectively. Matrix effects were observed only for the 25% of the analytes. The performance of the MAE-LC-MS/MS method was compared to that of the QuEChERS sample preparation method, and the MAE-LC-MS/MS method proved to be rapid and effective.

Reversed phase-high-pressure liquid chromatographic methodologies equipped with UV detector (RP-HPLC-UV) were developed for the determination of phenolic compounds and tocopherols in almonds. Nineteen samples of Texas almonds originating from USA and Greece were analyzed and 7 phenolic acids, 7 flavonoids, and tocopherols (−α, −β + γ) were determined. The analytical methodologies were validated and presented excellent linearity (r2 &gt, 0.99), high recoveries over the range between 83.1 (syringic acid) to 95.5% (ferulic acid) for within-day assay (n = 6), and between 90.2 (diosmin) to 103.4% (rosmarinic acid) for between-day assay (n = 3 × 3), for phenolic compounds, and between 95.1 and 100.4% for within-day assay (n = 6), and between 93.2–96.2% for between-day assay (n = 3 × 3) for tocopherols. The analytes were further quantified, and the results were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA), and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) to investigate potential differences between the bioactive content of almonds and the geographical origin. A decision tree (DT) was developed for the prediction of the geographical origin of almonds proposing a characteristic marker with a concentration threshold, proving to be a promising and reliable tool for the guarantee of the authenticity of the almonds.

Nowadays, the interest in preparing new, cheap and simple adsorbents that are used in sample preparation is on the rise. Graphene oxide (GO) nanomaterials and nanocomposites have become increasingly popular due to the novel methods of syntheses that have been published. Owing to their vast specific surface area and their π-delocalized electron system they possess, they are appropriate for the adsorption of a variety of aromatic organic compounds, being utilized either as adsorbents in analytical methods or as filter materials for the removal of pollutants in water. Pharmaceutical compounds, such as benzodiazepines, end up in surface waters caused by consumption or their disposal through sewage, thus becoming pollutants. In the present study, an analytical method has been developed and validated for the determination of two model-analytes of benzodiazepines by HPLC-DAD and their sample preparation protocol which consists of the Stir bar magnetic solid phase extraction (SB-MSPE) method, evaluating therefore the nanocomposite material as a decent adsorbent. The separation took place with the usage of an analytical column C18 RP-HPLC in 10 min. For the alprazolam (ALP) and the flunitrazepam (FLT), the LODs and LOQs were 3 ng/mL and 10 ng/mL, respectively, while the relative recoveries ranged between 93.6–112.9% and the RSDs were 1.11–9.50%. Finally, the material was examined for its reusability and was found that it can be used for over eight cycles of extraction/elution.

Thiophenic compounds constitute a class of sulfur compounds derived by thiophene, containing at least one thiophenic ring. Their presence in fuels (crude oil, etc.) is important and can reach 3% m/m. The combustion of fuels leads to the formation of sulfur oxides a severe source of environmental pollution issues, such as acid rain with adverse effects both to humans and to the environment. To reduce such problems, the EU and other regulatory agencies worldwide set increasingly stringent regulations for sulfur content in fuels resulting in the necessity for intense desulphurization processes. However, most of these processes are inefficient in the total removal of sulfur compounds. Therefore, thiophenic compounds such as benzothiophenes and dibenzothiophenes are still present in heavier fractions of petroleum, therefore, their determination is of great importance. Until now, all HPLC methods applied in similar studies use gradient elution programs that may last more than 25 min with no validation results provided. To fill this gap, the aim of the present study was to develop and validate a simple and fast HPLC-UV method in order to be used as a useful monitoring tool in the evaluation studies of novel desulfurization technologies by means of simultaneous determination of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyl-dibenzothiophene and dibenzothiophene sulfone in the desulfurization effluents.

Parabens have been widely employed as preservatives since the 1920s for extending the shelf life of foodstuffs, medicines, and daily care products. Given the fact that there are some legitimate concerns related to their potential multiple endocrine-disrupting properties, the development of novel bioanalytical methods for their biomonitoring is crucial. In this study, a fabric phase sorptive extraction reversed-phase liquid chromatography method coupled with UV detection (FPSE-HPLC-UV) was developed and validated for the quantitation of seven parabens in human plasma samples. Chromatographic separation of the seven parabens and p-hydroxybenzoic acid was achieved on a semi-micro Spherisorb ODS1 analytical column under isocratic elution using a mobile phase containing 0.1% (v/v) formic acid and 66% 49 mM ammonium formate aqueous solution in acetonitrile at flow rate 0.25 mL min−1 with a 24-min run time for each sample. The method was linear at a concentration range of 20 to 500 ng mL−1 for the seven parabens under study in human plasma samples. The efficiency of the method was proven with the analysis of 20 human plasma samples collected from women subjected to breast cancer surgery and to reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery. The highest quantitation rates in human plasma samples from cancerous cases were found for methylparaben and isobutylparaben with average plasma concentrations at 77 and 112.5 ng mL−1. The high concentration levels detected agree with previous findings for some of the parabens and emphasize the need for further epidemiological research on the possible health effects of the use of these compounds.

Sample preparation is an essential and preliminary procedure of most chemical analyses. Due to the sample diversity, the selection of appropriate adsorbents for the effective preparation and separation of different samples turned out to be important for the methods. By exploiting the rapid development of material science, some novel adsorption materials, especially graphene-based nanomaterials, have shown supremacy in sample pretreatment. In this review, a discussion between these nanomaterials will be made, as well as some basic information about their synthesis. The focus will be on the different environmental applications that use these materials.

In this review, the ever-increasing use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) in microextraction techniques will be discussed, focusing on the reasons needed to replace conventional extraction techniques with greener approaches that follow the principles of green analytical chemistry. The properties of DES will be discussed, pinpointing their exceptional performance and analytical parameters, justifying their current extensive scientific interest. Finally, a variety of applications for commonly used microextraction techniques will be reported.

Bisphenol-A (BPA), bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), and urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) are organic monomers that can be released from dental composites into the oral cavity. Over specific concentrations, they can act as endocrine disruptors or cause toxic effects. The purpose of this work is to develop and validate an analytical method to determine BPA, Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, and UDMA monomers released from synthetic dental resins in artificial saliva. The method was validated before its application to new hybrid ceramic materials used in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorations to determine the release of monomers in various time intervals (e.g., 24 h, and 7, 14, 30, and 60 days), both in methanolic solutions, as well as in artificial saliva. Chromatographic analysis was performed isocratically on a Perfect Sil Target ODS-3 analytical column (250 mm &times, 4.6 mm, 5 &micro, m) with CH3CN/H2O, 58/42% v/v as mobile phase within 23 min. The developed method was validated in terms of selectivity, linearity, accuracy, and precision.

Graphene oxide (GO) is a chemical compound with a form similar to graphene that consists of one-atom-thick two-dimensional layers of sp2-bonded carbon. Graphene oxide exhibits high hydrophilicity and dispersibility. Thus, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles is performed in order to prepare a magnetic GO nanocomposite that combines the sufficient adsorption capacity of graphene oxide and the convenience of magnetic separation. Moreover, the magnetic material can be further functionalized with different groups to prevent aggregation and extends its potential application. Until today, a plethora of magnetic GO hybrid materials have been synthesized and successfully employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organic compounds from environmental, agricultural, biological, and food samples. The developed GO nanocomposites exhibit satisfactory stability in aqueous solutions, as well as sufficient surface area. Thus, they are considered as an alternative to conventional sorbents by enriching the analytical toolbox for the analysis of trace organic compounds.

The concept of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was first introduced in 1990; nowadays they are among the most promising novel materials. MOFs belong to a new class of crystalline materials that consist of coordination bonds between metal clusters (e.g., metal-carboxylate clusters and metal-azolate clusters), metal atoms, or rod-shaped clusters and multidentate organic linkers that contain oxygen or nitrogen donors (like carboxylates, azoles, nitriles, etc.); thus, a three-dimensional structure is formed [...].

Galantamine (GAL), donepezil (DON) and rivastigmine (RIV) are cholinesterase inhibitors administered to patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We have currently developed and validated an HPLC-DAD method for the determination of GAL, DON, RIV in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood serum and urine. The retention times of the drugs were 1.5, 2.2 and 3.1 min, respectively and the total time of analysis was 5 min. Validation was performed in terms of linearity, selectivity, accuracy, precision, and stability. Following validation, the method was applied to clinical CSF, blood serum and urine samples. The currently developed method is a reliable tool for monitoring CSF, serum and urine galantamine, donepezil and rivastigmine levels in patients under treatment with these drugs.

Back in 1894, Wilhelm Ostwald defined analytical chemistry as “the art of recognizing different substances and determining their constituents”, which “occupies a prominent position among the applications of science, since the questions it allows us to answer arise wherever chemical processes are used for scientific or technical purposes”. In 1993, the Working Party of Analytical Chemistry (WPAC), held in Edinburgh, UK, stated that analytical chemistry “is that scientific discipline that develops and applies methods, tools and strategies to obtain information on the composition and nature in space and time”. Nowadays, these definitions remain very modern and, above all, they are reflected in an uncountable number of application sectors, ranging from biology, geology, environmental sciences, agricultural chemistry, physics, engineering, medicine, and materials science, to social sciences and, of course, in chemistry itself. Often, this discipline is relegated into a corner and considered merely a support for other subjects; this, however, is without realizing that without it and, above all, without its principles, theories, and tools, nothing could make any applicative or rational sense.

Tricyclic antidepressant drugs (TCAs) are a main category of antidepressants, which are until today widely used for the treatment of psychological disorders due to their low cost and their high efficiency. Therefore, there is a great demand for method development for the determination of TCAs in biofluids, especially for therapeutic drug monitoring. Gas chromatography (GC) was the first chromatographic technique implemented for this purpose. With the recent development in the field of sample preparation, many novel GC applications have been developed. Herein, we aim to report the recent application of GC for the determination of tricyclic antidepressants in biofluids. Emphasis is given to novel extraction techniques and novel materials used for sample preparation.

Fabric phase sorptive extraction (FPSE) has gained notable attention and interest both in batch and automatic mode utilizing advanced sol-gel derived microextraction sorbents and the hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of fabric substrates. Recently, the innovative on-line fabric disk sorptive extraction (FDSE) has opened new opportunities in the field of automatic sample preparation (preconcentration/separation). A novel sol-gel sorbent based on caprolactone-dimethylsiloxane-caprolactone block polymer comprised of a non-polar dimethylsiloxane and hydrophilic caprolactone as a coating on hydrophobic polyester fabric substrate and its evaluation in an automatic FDSE system coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), is presented for the first time. The capabilities of the proposed flow injection system were assessed for trace Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) determination in urine samples. The method was based on the on-line formation of target analytes with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) and their retention onto the surface of the fabric disk medium. Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) was used to elute metal&ndash, APDC complexes directly into the nebulizer-burner system of FAAS. For 90 s of preconcentration time, enhancement factors of 250, 130, 185, and 36 and detection limits (3 s) of 0.15, 0.41, 1.62, and 0.49 &mu, g L&minus, 1 were obtained for Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively. For 30 s of preconcentration time, an enhancement factor of 49 and a detection limit of 0.12 &mu, 1 was achieved for Zn(II) determination. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), was lower than 3.5% for all metals. The accuracy of the proposed method was sufficient and evaluated by analyzing certified reference materials and biological samples.

Milk-producing animals are typically kept stationary in overcrowded large-scale farms and in most cases under unsanitary conditions, which promotes the development of infections. In order to maintain sufficient health status among the herd or promote growth and increase production, farmers administer preventative antibiotic doses to the animals through their feed. However, many antibiotics used in cattle farms are intended for the treatment of bacterial infections in humans. This results in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria which pose a great risk for public health. Additionally, antibiotic residues are found in milk and dairy products, with potential toxic effects for the consumers. Hence the need of antibiotic residues monitoring in milk arises. Analytical methods were developed for the determination of antibiotics in milk, with key priority given to the analyte extraction and preconcentration step. Extraction can benefit from the production of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) that can be applied as sorbents for the extraction of specific antibiotics. This review focuses on the principals of molecular imprinting technology and synthesis methods of MIPs, as well as the application of MIPs and MIPs composites for the chromatographic determination of various antibiotic categories in milk found in the recent literature.

Bisphenol-A, a synthetic organic compound with estrogen mimicking properties, may enter bloodstream through either dermal contact or ingestion. Probiotic bacterial uptake of bisphenol can play a major protective role against its adverse health effects. In this paper, a method for the quantification of BPA in bacterial cells of L. lactis and of BPA and its potential metabolites 4-hydroxybenzoic Acid, 4-hydroxyacetophenone and hydroquinone in the culture medium is described. Extraction of BPA from the cells was performed using methanol–H2O/TFA (0.08%) (5:1 v/v) followed by SPE. Culture medium was centrifuged and filtered through a 0.45 μm syringe filter. Analysis was conducted in a Nucleosil column, using a gradient of A (95:5 v/v H2O: ACN) and B (5:95 v/v H2O: ACN, containing TFA, pH 2), with a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. Calibration curves (0.5–600 μg/mL) were constructed using 4-n-Octylphenol as internal standard (1 > R2 > 0.994). Limit of Detection (LOD) and Limit of Quantification (LOQ) values ranged between 0.23 to 4.99 μg/mL and 0.69 to 15.1 μg/mL respectively. A 24 h administration experiment revealed a decline in BPA concentration in the culture media up to 90.27% while the BPA photodegradation levels were low. Our results demonstrate that uptake and possible metabolism of BPA in L. lactis cells facilitates its removal.

A quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) dispersive extraction method is proposed herein for the isolation and cleanup of melamine and cyromazine from chicken egg yolk. Analytes are determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using photodiode array detector after separation on a LiChroCART® (250 × 4 mm)–-LiChrospher® RP-8e, 5 µm analytical column using a mobile phase of 0.1% trifluoracetic acid and methanol (80:20 v/v) delivered isocratically at a flow rate of 1 mL/minute. Extraction of isolated compounds was achieved by methanol and acetonitrile mixture (1:1 v/v). Recovery rates ranged between 74.5% and 115.8%. The method was validated in terms of 657/2002/EC decision. The within-laboratory reproducibility, expressed as a relative standard deviation, was -1 for cyromazine, and the corresponding results for detection capability (CCbeta) were 2.8 mg/kg for melamine and 0.24 mg/kg for cyromazine. Ruggedness was estimated according to the Youden approach studying egg yolk mass, sorbent mass, centrifugation time, organic solvents volume, evaporation temperature, and vortex time.
