Holistic assessment is an evaluative approach in which assessors work backwards from an overall appraisal of work to determine the criteria relevant to individual student responses. One of the strongest proponents of this approach in higher education is Royce Sadler, whose theoretical contributions over recent decades provide a strong conceptual rationale for holistic assessment. While Sadler's contributions are well renowned, few explicit accounts are available of Sadlerian theory in practice. The purpose of this reflective paper, as such, is to explain how we have attempted to synthesise and apply a Sadlerian theory of holistic assessment design in one of our own courses. Our intended contribution is to provide a relatively concrete interpretation of holistic assessment design which may serve as a point of reference for assessment design in higher education coursework.

This teaching initiative responded to an effort to strengthen the connection between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) theory and practice among Master of Social Work (MSW) students. This initiative was developed in response to feedback from our MSW students, who requested further training in CBT skills before entering practicum settings. Incorporating a two-day training workshop in CBT skills and the use of simulation-based learning (SBL), this project was a pilot for building additional practice skills into the MSW curriculum. The workshop focused on applying specific CBT theory and skills taught within the MSW program in a more focused way, offering a potentially new and ongoing model for building increased confidence in practice techniques. Evaluation methods of the initiative included pre-post qualitative reflections and post-workshop feedback.

The purpose of this study was to explore translanguaging space as a transformative third space, where alternative and competing discourses are celebrated and where science learning and the development of science's discourse and epistemic practices expand across overlapping boundaries (e.g., home, school, and community). The study focused on Syrian refugee youth adapting to learning science in English in the Lebanese multilingual educational system that esteems international languages (English or French) over Arabic. Our research questions included: (1) What translanguaging practices and functions emerge during a linguistically responsive life science unit designed for refugee multilingual learners? (2) How does a translanguaging space act as a third space for refugee learners to engage in meaning-making and science practices and discourse around the topic of "respiration"? The study utilized a qualitative instrumental case-study approach to generate data around refugee learners' languaging practices and their development of science understandings, practices, and discourse. We also engaged in participatory methodologies that challenge boundaries between researchers and participants. The data sources were 22 Zoom recordings, students' work, and participant-generated feedback. Thematic analysis was used to analyze transcripts and students' work while adhering to trustworthiness criteria. Our findings center translanguaging as a justice-oriented pedagogy that enables a productive and "inviting" third space for refugee multilingual learners to make meaning of phenomena by bringing together and extending their semiotic and epistemic repertoires. Serving multi-tiered functions, translanguaging fostered dialogic connections that affirmed students' "outside" social spaces as valuable resources for meaning-making in science classrooms. The implications discuss design features that support a fluid and purposeful translanguaging third space for asset-oriented science learning.

Despite the clear efficacy and appeal of naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions for families of young children, they are often difficult for families to access due to the limited availability of trained service providers. In recent years, telehealth has emerged as an effective tool for overcoming issues related to access, especially in rural and underserved communities. However, while telehealth offers a strategy to connect with families, it does not address the limited availability of trained providers. In this article, we provide an overview of a statewide model developed to increase access to naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions for families while building the capacity of early intervention providers. Through this model, expert consultants connect to caregivers and providers via telehealth to provide information and coaching over a limited series of visits. Collectively, child, caregiver, and provider outcomes support the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of this model while demonstrating that services can be provided successfully to diverse participants.

Lecture capture videos, a popular type of instructional content used by instructors to share course recordings online, play a significant role in educational settings. Compared to other educational videos, these recordings require minimal time and effort to produce, making them a preferred choice for disseminating course materials. Despite their numerous benefits, there exists a scarcity of data-driven evidence regarding students' use of and engagement with lecture capture videos. Most existing studies rely on self-reported data, lacking comprehensive insights into students' actual video engagement. This research endeavor sought to bridge this gap by investigating university students' engagement patterns while watching lecture capture videos. To achieve this objective, we conducted an analysis of a large-scale dataset comprising over one million rows of video interaction logs. Leveraging clustering and process mining methodologies, we explored the data to reveal valuable insights into students' video engagement behaviors. Our findings indicate that in approximately 60% of students' video-watching sessions, only a small portion of the videos (an average of 7%) is watched. Our results also show that visiting the video page does not necessarily mean that the student watched it. This study may contribute to the existing literature by providing robust data-driven evidence on university students' lecture capture video engagement patterns. It is also expected to contribute methodologically to capturing, preprocessing, and analyzing students' video interactions in different contexts.

In Spring 2020, there was a sudden shift from face-to-face (F2F) to distance learning (DL) due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. A study by Al-Jarf (2020) showed that 55% of the students and instructors preferred F2F instruction and were not satisfied with DL due to unfamiliarity, lack of training, interaction, technical problems and others. In the Fall Semester 2021, Saudi universities resumed F2F instruction in combination with some online classes. In some emergencies such as weather conditions, all students study online rather than cancelling classes. This status quo has continued until now. This study explores students' preferences for DL vs F2F learning, their attitudes towards each and reasons for their preferences. Responses to a survey showed that 36% of the students in the sample prefer DL because it has become a necessity during emergencies such as pandemics and wars. They can check the lecture recording any time. They save commuting time. In addition, 40% of the respondents prefer F2F instruction because they get better grades. It is more suitable for science classes (labs, experiments, anatomy). Participation, interaction, and questions make a difference. In DL, students can leave Blackboard or Zoom, walk around, and take a nap, whereas in F2F, they focus better. Some health sciences, engineering, law, and/or business instructors talk about their experiences and views of the job market which is enriching and enjoyable for the students. Moreover, 17% have no preference and believe that the mode of learning depends on the instructors' competence, teaching techniques used, integration of technologies, and online resources, interaction, engagement, and students' participation. Participants' views and recommendations are given in detail.

In formal educational settings, such as online university lectures, instructional videos often consist of PowerPoint slides accompanied by a video or audio explanation from the instructor. It has been assumed that the social cues provided by the instructor's video may facilitate affective processes and affect learning outcomes. Research on instructor presence in instructional videos has focused primarily on laboratory and online studies that are not embedded in the courses in which learners are enrolled. Therefore, we present three field studies examining instructor presence in instructional videos embedded in higher education courses to strengthen external validity (exam-relevant topic, > 30 min long, personally known instructor). The results of these studies show positive effects of a visible instructor compared to no visible instructor on some affective measures: social presence in Study 1 (n = 18, d = 0.85) and well-being in Study 3 (n = 38, d = 1.01), but not on others (well-being in Studies 1 & 2 (n = 53); motivation in Studies 1-3, social presence in Studies 2 & 3). They also show no effects on extraneous processing or learning outcomes (Studies 1-3). Thus, no general effect of instructor presence can be shown for instructional videos embedded in university courses in higher education, but there are also no detrimental effects. This leads to implications for future research, teaching, and design practice.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many students refused to turn on their webcams during synchronous online classes. Students may intentionally remain invisible to teachers and colleagues for reasons related to their motivation and emotions. However, less is known about the relationships between students' activity and frequency of turning on the webcam during synchronous online classes and their self-compassion. In our study (N = 450, Polish students aged 18 to 28), we examined the relationship between students' self-compassion, self-esteem, body esteem, and discomfort when using webcams with their activity and frequency of turning on the webcam during synchronous online classes. We found that men scored higher than women on self-compassion, self-esteem, and body esteem, but lower on discomfort when using the webcam. In both genders, higher self-compassion was associated with higher self-esteem, higher body esteem, higher activity during synchronous online classes, and less discomfort when using the webcam. Moreover, in women, higher self-compassion was linked with more frequent turning on the webcam. We also observed that discomfort when using the webcam and self-esteem mediated relationships between self-compassion and activity and turning on the webcam during synchronous online classes. Our results indicate the importance of improving self-compassion in students during online education.

Despite the post-COVID return to face-to-face teaching and learning, many higher educational institutions continue to utilize videoconferencing due to its numerous benefits. Along with this increased adoption, reports have surfaced regarding videoconference fatigue (VF), a phenomenon characterized by exhaustion from using videoconference platforms. Despite this, there is a substantial gap in our understanding of the antecedent factors contributing to VF. Our study aims to develop and validate a research instrument for the study of the antecedents to VF in the context of whole-class teaching in higher education, which we term the AVFS-HE. We developed and tested this scale across three studies: first with 21 undergraduates in the substantive validity phase, and a further 508 undergraduates in the structural validity and external validity phases. The final 17-item AVFS-HE encompassed five key antecedents to VF: psychological, technical, social, productivity (engagement), and productivity (distraction) antecedents. The measure was shown to demonstrate good validity both internally and in relation to VF constructs. Recommendations for future research and practical recommendations for educators are discussed.

This study is focused on the analysis of online intercultural competence from a gender perspective. It uses online communications and student self-perceptions to explore similarities and differences. Videoconferencing was used as a tool for communication in higher education. A quantitative and qualitative methodologies were applied, including quantifying content analysis. The sample consisted of pairs of university students. The results show very similar scores between men and women in communication and self-perception in affective aspects. Statistical differences were found in the behavioural communication and in cognitive self-perception. Communications of negative nature are scarce in both groups. This study helps to understand the similarities and differences in students' communication and self-perception in an intercultural online context.

Individuals with disabilities may exhibit dangerous behavior such as physical aggression and self-injury. Determining the environmental variables maintaining dangerous behavior using a functional behavior assessment can inform treatment in teaching individuals with disabilities functionally equivalent replacement behavior. However, logistic factors, such as distance and the scarcity of qualified personnel, often impede the administration of functional behavior assessments. Behavioral skills training delivered via telehealth may teach practitioners (e.g., behavior analysts) to conduct functional behavior assessments. The current systematic review identified peer-reviewed articles and dissertations (n = 8) involving telehealth-delivered behavioral skills training intended to increase the intervention fidelity of practitioners in conducting functional behavior assessments. Coders reviewed study characteristics, quality, and training outcomes. Authors reported mixed findings regarding the ability of training to improve trainee fidelity. A discussion follows a presentation of results.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities could not receive visitors. Health authorities suggested the use of digital social contact as an alternative for in-person visits. We examined how people with intellectual disabilities living in care facilities experienced the use of digital social contact with their informal social network throughout 2020. Residents, their relatives, volunteer visitors, direct support staff, and care facility managers (N = 283) completed an online questionnaire, of whom 35 participated in an interview. Video calling and in-person visits were among the most common forms of staying in touch. Experiences with digital social contact depended on residents' abilities and support needs, and on preconditions, such as staff availability. The first phases of the pandemic led to experiences of possibilities and benefits of using digital social contact as complementary to in-person contact for people with different levels of intellectual disability, also after the pandemic.

Increasing student engagement and improving learning outcomes are ongoing issues in higher education worldwide. These issues were particularly pertinent during the COVID-19 pandemic when remote learning was selected as the primary instructional learning setting. This study aims to assess the impact of gamification-based quiz instruction in driving college students' learning in an online class during the COVID-19 pandemic at a remote institution of higher education in Indonesia (n = 68). The study employs an explanatory sequential mixed-method approach, including quasi-experimental research, quantitative surveys, and qualitative interviews. The findings indicate that the overall result of the four tests conducted during the intervention indicates a statistically significant difference among the three groups. The gamification-based quizzes increase student enthusiasm and improve learning outcomes. The study demonstrates the transformation induced by the ease of use and low cost of digital gaming platforms from mundane activities, such as listening to lectures on Zoom, to enjoyable educational gaming activities. The weekly gamification-based formative assessments using easy-to-use media significantly increase student engagement, critical and creative thinking, and information literacy during the learning process.

The role of education staff in supporting social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) difficulties is critical, however access to specialist mental health input can be difficult. Digitally-mediated service delivery was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and may be integrated in a post-COVID-19 world to support education staff. Using a systems change evaluation framework, this study explored staff perceptions of a digitally-mediated, multidisciplinary model for SEMH needs in primary school settings. Participants were education staff (n = 6) from five participating schools in a rural county in the UK and the multidisciplinary team (n = 7). Focus groups were conducted at baseline, 12 months, and 24 months during a 2-year pilot project. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Education staff and the multidisciplinary team perceived progress over time in relation to increased capacity (for early intervention) and improved coordination (between relevant children's services). Digitally-mediated service delivery facilitated changes in practice that were empowering for education staff and supportive in meeting communication needs. This study provides preliminary support for acceptability of digitally-mediated team communication as an enhanced model of SEMH service provision in primary school settings in the UK.

Learning must be able to develop knowledge, skills, and mindsets so that the graduates produced have attitudes, abilities and knowledge that are integrated and skilled in life. One way to achieve learning can be done through habits of mind because the success of learning is strongly influenced by habits of mind. The purpose of this study is to as certain how habits of mind and cognitive learning outcomes in biology are affected by learning process oriented guided inquiry learning with blended learning support. A pretest-postest design wih a non-equivalent control group was employed in this study. The trial ran from February to June 2022. Utilizing the habits of mind questionnaire, pupils' thought patterns were assessed. Essay tests are also used to evaluate the results of cognitive learning. In this study, google form, LMS, and google meet were used for data collection. Statistical Product and Service Solutions software version 23 is used for data analysis and the results of covariance analysis (ANCOVA) showed a p value < 0,005, meaning that POGIL-supported blended learning can empower habits of mind and cognitive learning outcomes in biology learning. There is a substantial difference between the outcomes of the least significant difference and increasing habits of mind and cognitive learning outcomes. As a result, POGIL with moodle support can be used to enhance students' habits of mind and cognitive learning results in biology classes.

This study aims to assess the mathematics literacy levels of 15-year-old students participating in the PISA-2022 test, considering the impacts of the frequency of digital device usage, and the influence of printed and digital learning resources in the educational context across Estonia, Finland, China (Hong Kong), Croatia, and Turkey during COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a correlational survey research design, data were sourced from the PISA-2022 dataset, with the sample drawn from the specified target population encompassing students in the selected countries. The analysis involved one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple linear regression modeling. Across all countries examined, students using personal laptops, desktop computers, or tablets demonstrated higher levels of mathematical literacy compared to those utilizing other digital tools, except in Turkey where students employing their smartphones exhibited superior mathematical literacy. Furthermore, findings indicated a positive association between live lessons delivered by teachers at school through video communication platforms (e.g., EBA, Zoom™, Skype™) and mathematics literacy levels in all countries.

Since the 1980s, the Maryland Collegiate Honors Council has offered an annual conference on a host campus in late February. In 2020, MCHC slipped in the conference just before the apocalyptic arrival of COVID-19 in March. Because this conference is hugely popular statewide, we decided to organize it virtually in 2021. Our topic--"In Honors…Black Lives Matter"--was too important for us to wait out the pandemic. We charged nothing, partly to encourage students and member institutions to participate and partly because it cost us nothing. Attendance tripled. Students who could not miss class or work were able to attend. Programs were spared from spending precious resources on travel and lodging. Family members were able to attend. Diversity followed access because students could attend at no cost on their phones. By necessity, our 2022 conference was also virtual. For 2023, we went hybrid with Friday in person and Saturday virtual. Students chose the day they preferred to present. They split evenly. This model reduced the conference cost to $80 for both days and $30 for virtual only, cut our carbon footprint, eliminated waste, removed time and transportation barriers for students, democratized participation, made cancellation unnecessary, and reduced the financial barrier for smaller honors programs. A student who was homeless even attended from his state-funded hotel room. This revolutionary experiment in public access to honors models the "NCHC Shared Principles and Practices of Honors Education," particularly as regards equity and inclusion. Moreover, this model is one that other jurisdictions could emulate, regardless of size.

Exploring international students' long-distance relationships with their back-home families is important for understanding how to support their stability and growth. Using qualitative interviews and surveys, this research explored perspectives from both international students and their parents about their remote interactions while oceans apart. Findings indicate three transformative shifts that enhanced the quality of student-parent relationships through their distance: a) incidental to intentionally motivated interactions, b) task-oriented to person-centered attention, and c) authoritarian to communally-oriented dispositions. These shifts fostered a greater sense of trust, support, and intimacy between international students and their back-home parents. Interweaving Construal Level Theory with the findings, this study offers implications for informing international students and their parents on developing effective, long-distance relationships.

This study examines the role of recast frequency and its effectiveness in the acquisition of English articles in a computer-mediated context. Sixty-one preintermediate university language learners in Turkey were randomly divided into four main groups: high frequency recast (HF), low frequency recast (LF), test control, and task control groups. The learners in the HF and LF recast groups completed five and two tasks, respectively, in a video-conferencing environment and received oral recasts on their incorrect use of English articles. Learners in the test control group only took the pre and posttests, and learners in the task control group completed five tasks without receiving feedback on the target structure. The outcome was measured through online picture description and error correction tasks. Findings showed that in the picture description task, learners in the HF group performed significantly better than those in the LF recast group and the control groups. In the error correction task, the results revealed a short-term advantage for learners in the HF group, which faded away in the delayed posttest. Significant correlations were also found between the recast frequency and learners' score improvement in the immediate and delayed picture description tasks but not in the error correction tasks. These results suggest that recast quantity may play an important role in improving learners' accuracy of their oral production.

While vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) have primarily been taught in physical classroom settings, the potential for applying strategy training in an online environment remains under-explored. With the rising acceptance of remote education, there is a need to investigate the impacts of applying strategy training in online contexts. Hence, this study explores the effects of online deliveries on VLSs and vocabulary usage in writing among adult English as second language (ESL) learners via massive open online course (MOOC) and video conferencing platforms. A total of 50 pre-intermediate ESL learners completed a 5-week VLSs course on a MOOC while 44 students learnt from the instructor synchronously using Microsoft Teams. The data comprised questionnaires and learners' compositions, which were collected before and after treatment. The data analysis procedures involved Lextutor's version of lexical frequency profiling (LFP), descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that there was a significant increase of usage in all categories of the VLSs after the course for both groups. Additionally, the effects of VLSs instruction on vocabulary usage could be reflected in both groups' writing though the choice of words might have been task-influenced. The findings from this study could yield useful insights on online vocabulary learning for ESL instructors and learners.

Globalization and the call for global citizenship education have enabled virtual exchange to prepare healthcare students as emerging healthcare professionals for working in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world. Integrating virtual exchange opportunities into undergraduate curricula in higher education equips students with the knowledge, skills, and attributes needed to be responsive to global healthcare challenges. This study reports on the perceptions of undergraduate healthcare students from geographically distant locations on how (if any) participating in an international virtual exchange project fostered their intercultural competence. Anchored in social constructivism and adopting a qualitative methodology, data was collected using an online, open-ended reflective questionnaire. Findings from the thematic analysis highlight that integrating virtual exchange into curriculum design can foster intercultural competence, preparing healthcare students as emerging professionals for the world of work that necessitates an appreciation for diverse ways of knowing, being, and doing to ensure optimal healthcare.

This study aimed to explore the undergraduates' attitudes and perceptions towards the use of synchronous zoom classroom for learning, and the effect of individual differences on the perceptions of zoom learning. Data were collected via online structured questionnaire from a total of 379 undergraduate students, who utilized a hybrid mode for learning, at purposively selected two state universities. The findings explored that undergraduates did not overwhelmingly support or oppose the utilization of zoom platform for learning. Multi-group analysis revealed that: male undergraduates were more receptive to use zoom classroom for learning, and perceived more beneficial aspects associated with zoom classroom compared to female undergraduates; further, undergraduates in the final academic year had the preference for zoom learning whereas those in the first academic year did not show a definite inclination either in favour or against the use of zoom for learning; moreover, significant differences were observed over the preferences on learning through both zoom and face-to-face regarding theoretical and mathematical subjects where learning of theoretical subject was supported by zoom and learning of mathematical subject were not showed a definite inclination either in favour or against the use of zoom. These findings clearly demonstrate that there is a possibility to take forward the teaching and learning through a hybrid mode which integrates both online mode and traditional face-to-face mode. This research provides insights for educational policy makers and university administrators to incorporate a hybrid learning mode for effective learning and solution for the highly demanded physical infrastructure facilities in the universities.

The massive shift to online learning due to the COVID-19 outbreak has opened wider possibilities of telecollaboration among English learners through global online communities. Responding to the limited empirical evidence on what drives these learners to learn beyond their geographical boundaries, this phenomenological case study intends to delve into the English learners' motivational self-system in a global-speaking online community (GSOC). Recruiting six learners from different countries, the empirical data were gathered from participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Concepts of the L2 motivational self-system and international posture were employed to inspire the thematic analysis. The findings elucidate that the participants tended to disclose their stronger L2 ideal selves compared to their L2 ought-to selves. Further, they experienced multifaceted discrepancies in their English learning trajectories and saw GSOC as one of their motivating endeavors to decrease these discrepancies. They reflected that the outbreak had provided them with a broader opportunity to virtually learn from others mediated by technology. The international posture and instrumental motivation appeared to be a motivational construct in their L2 ideal projected selves. In contrast, the integrative construct was likely unable to exert its explanatory power in this context. To this end, some implications are also discussed accordingly.

Home-school communication is fundamental to parent involvement and student success. This essay and discussion article outlines the broad range of opportunities currently available for teachers to communicate with parents and associated strategies. The most frequent one-way modes of communication used with parents are discussed (websites, newsletters, email, texts, apps, report cards) as well as popular two-way interaction strategies (phone calls, home visits, parent-teacher conferences, virtual meetings). Key barriers to parent-teacher communication are also discussed, including racial stereotypes, language, teacher training, technology, and time, as well as the potential impact of a pandemic. Future directions for research in the area of school-home communication are also proposed. Ultimately, every communication exchange between teachers and parents occurs within the context of what has gone before and sets the stage for future interactions.

Research shows that videoconferencing tools can be used for delivering high-quality instruction in real-time to a large number of students simultaneously during and even in the aftermath of the pandemic. However, there is a lack of data on how favourable it is among students, particularly in the Philippine setting, in the field of Physical Education (PE). In this regard, this study aimed at inspecting exogenous factors linked to students' acceptance of a video-conferencing platform in learning knowledge- and skill-based concepts in Physical Education through the adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model. After performing the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling from a purposively selected sample of 250 teacher education students, the results showed that perceived ease of use (PEOU) positively affected perceived usefulness (PU). It was also found that PEOU and PU impacted behavioural intention. Lastly, behavioural intention (BI) positively leverages actual use of the Zoom platform. It can be inferred that students can benefit greatly from using the video-conferencing platform to learn various PE concepts. Moreover, another surprising discovery was that students could use the platform to efficiently learn, thus capitalising on the university's educational system, even in the New Normal.

Without the ability to analyze their own learning (metacognition), students can find it difficult to manage their educational journey. The good news is, future learning environments on online platforms offer innovative ways to develop these skills, even for those who are digital natives. This study aims to ascertain the effectiveness of online learning by using a website hyperlink-based teaching and learning scenario, especially using the Microsoft Teams platform towards students' metacognition during online learning. Both metacognition knowledge and awareness (regulation), representing the metacognition, were checked. Coordination systems in learning biology were the chosen topics to be taught in quasiexperimental research using a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. Two classes were selected purposely based on the normality and homogeneity test to have the controlled and experimental classes. We examined the metacognitive knowledge and awareness using tests and questionnaires. We checked the effectiveness of the web hyperlink-based media on students' metacognition knowledge and awareness using MANOVA Regression analysis and N-Gain scores. Our developed web hyperlinkbased media has significantly enhanced students' cognitive knowledge and awareness.

This study compared the outcome of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention when supervision was given over videoconference for half of the meetings. This started after 3 months of intervention. The participating children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and were randomly placed in either the videoconference group or in the onsite group. The dependent variables were autism severity, preferences for socially mediated stimuli and problematic behaviors. The independent variable was supervision onsite or by videoconference. The results showed no significant differences between the groups on any of the outcome measures. A limitation of this study was the small group sizes, which limits generalization of the results to other children and settings. Furthermore, the onsite group received some supervision sessions via videoconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, our tentative conclusion is that supervision via videoconference has the potential to replace onsite supervision at least partially, but that larger scale research in a variety of settings is needed.

Although interest in blended learning for students has grown within elementary and secondary school contexts, limited research exists on the implementation of blended professional development (PD) for teachers. The current mixed-method action research study examined teacher participation in blended learning PD in a large California district, offered in response to the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a survey and interviews, the authors examined teacher self-efficacy and the reported influence of the PD on their practice. Findings suggest that the blended PD provided participants with the perceived self-efficacy needed to implement new instructional practices. In addition, collaboration among teachers was essential, teachers were able to learn through different pathways and at different rates, and ongoing support from a qualified PD instructor was necessary. This study sheds light on the implementation of blended PD for K-12 teachers, shares insights on practical considerations for planning and application, and suggests areas for future research.

With the initial COVID-19 lockdown of March 2020 in Ireland, many modules in university programmes that were designed to be delivered face-to-face were suddenly switched to remote delivery. The difficulty for both lecturers and students in replicating face-to-face interaction and the frequent lack of lecturers' visibility of students' work in such a setting created challenges for teachers and learners alike. In the current study, students' perspectives were sought on the format of remotely delivered tutorials for two first-year engineering mathematics modules. The format of the tutorials was designed to emulate face-to-face delivery as closely as possible and to promote student engagement, with an emphasis on real-time lecturer-student interaction as well as comprehensive visibility on student progress throughout each tutorial by combining an online mathematics assessment system Numbas with the video conferencing platform Zoom. Overall, students found the format to be a positive alternative to face-to-face tutorials and one that compared favourably with alternative delivery methods. It is hoped that the findings of this study would be of use to other practitioners engaged in remotely delivered mathematics tutorials.

The usage of video conferencing tools in teaching and learning has become a norm in today's higher educational institutions, recognized across various academic settings. The experience gained by most educators in using video conferencing tools for teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic could be leveraged to enhance these tools. The study aims to capture the current practices and explore the issues of using video conferencing for teaching and learning in Malaysian higher educational institutions. It focuses on three target groups with hands-on experience: academicians, students, and e-learning consultants or information technology (IT) support staff. Interview and focus group protocols were developed based on the four elements of the PACT framework: People (P), Activities (A), Contexts (C), and Technologies (T). Data were gathered through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with the target groups. There were 24 participants involved in three focus group discussions and 28 participants in individual in-depth interviews. The PACT framework was employed to analyze the data, aiding in understanding the current situation, identifying areas for improvement, and envisioning future scenarios. Qualitative data were transcribed and categorized based on the four PACT elements. The study identified differences in the People element with four scenarios/practices on physical differences, six on psychological differences, three on mental models, and five on social differences. A total of twenty differences were identified under the Activities element, with six on temporal aspects, four each on cooperation, complexity, and safety-critical aspects, and two on the nature of the content. Under the Context element, one scenario/practice was identified for organizational circumstances, five for social circumstances, and three for physical circumstances. In the Technology element, five scenarios/practices were identified: two related to the input part of technologies and one each for the output, communication, and content parts of technologies. From the scenarios/practices of the responses, a total of fifty-two issues related to using video conferencing for teaching and learning were identified. These findings will serve as the basis for ideation in developing innovative video conferencing toolkits for teaching and learning.

Videoconferencing was heavily utilized as an online learning tool at universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the high utilization, few studies have examined students' perspectives on their health, social interaction, and preferences in using specific videoconferencing features for online pedagogy and campus participation. This study surveyed 275 occupational therapy students from six class cohorts regarding the use of videoconferencing during the 2020-2021 academic year. Students reported physical changes in fatigue, eye, and back discomfort from the use of videoconferencing for extended periods, in addition to increased stress and anxiety during this period. Students reported lower class engagement during videoconferencing, as indicated by less frequency of asking/answering questions, paying attention, participating in breakout rooms with unfamiliar peers, and less motivation to attend classes. While students preferred in-person versus videoconferencing for overall classroom engagement and knowledge retention, preferences were equivocal for use of videoconferencing in meeting with professors, peer tutoring, group projects, and office hours. A benefit to videoconferencing availability was the ability to maintain social communication with friends and family, particularly for undergraduates. Comparisons among class cohorts are presented.

In an upcoming coverage-comprehension study, we plan to assess learners' meaning-recall knowledge of words as they occur in the study's reading passage. As several meaning-recall test formats exist, the purpose of this small-scale study (N = 10) was to determine which of three formats was most similar to a criterion interview regarding mean score and the consistency of correct/incorrect classifications (match rate, k = 30). In Test 1, the prompt consisted of only the target item, and a written translation of its meaning was elicited. In Test 2, the prompt was a short sentence in which a target item was highlighted, and a written translation of only that target item was requested. In Test 3, the prompt was the same sentence as in Test 2, but the target item was unhighlighted, and participants were requested to translate the entire sentence. Finally, in the criterion interview, participants were asked to demonstrate their understanding of the target items in the same prompt sentences as in Tests 2-3. The results indicated that Test 3 produced a mean score and match rate most similar to the interview, followed by Test 2, with Test 1 being the least similar. The paper discusses several factors explaining differences in test performance that were explored during the interview.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced institutions, faculty, and students to use emergency remote teaching (ERT) in the early stages of 2020. All educational levels, as well as schools and universities around the world, were affected. Although ERT and online education are not necessarily synonymous (see Thorkelson, 2021), most classes were delivered online, demanding an increased use of online tools like learning management systems (LMSs) and applications Zoom, "Microsoft Teams," and "Google Meet," among others, to meet the educational needs of most students. Post-pandemic students and faculty had returned to face-to-face classes or a hybrid model of education that balances online and offline classes and content as the pandemic faded. (See Thorkelson, 2021). However, both teachers and students gained new skills while losing or weakening some more traditional classroom-related skill sets. To draw some conclusions and make recommendations for establishing a successful post-pandemic educational milieu, this paper examines some of these skills and the related factors as they could affect both students and faculty in the post-pandemic educational environment.

To successfully interact in a new language, learners must effectively take turns and manage the floor. Expectations and rules for turn-taking can differ between languages, making this more than a question of grammatical proficiency and vocabulary acquisition. In addition, the increased use of videoconferencing software in education and beyond makes learning to manage the floor in virtual spaces a useful skill for everyone, including language learners. To analyze the turn-taking behaviors of first language (L1) speakers of Japanese using English in videoconferencing interactions, three classes of first-year university students with intermediate level English skills were selected to have their in-class videoconferencing discussions recorded. Three of the recorded discussions were selected and analyzed to identify turn-taking behaviors and to analyze the techniques that influenced the speakers' ability to succeed. Participants were observed to leave long gaps between speakers at turn transitions and rarely extended discussion topics to include multiple turns per speaker. There were three behaviors that were observed that helped some participants to reduce the gap between speakers. Clearly marking the end of a turn, energetic use of verbal backchannels, and comfort with unintentional overlap all seemed to be correlated with improved transition speed. Increased use of questions did lead to some topics being discussed beyond a single turn per speaker, but the difference was relatively small.

Teaching has gone beyond mere memorizing of rules and the use of talk and chalk method of teaching. Learning is no longer tied to the four-walls of the classroom hence teachers should adapt to the new digital way of learning. This paper investigated pre-service teachers' perceptions, preparedness and competence in using virtual meeting solutions (Zoom and Google Meet) in non-physical classroom practicum. Three hundred and fifty two preservice teachers selected from the Faculty of Education of a Nigerian University participated in the descriptive research study. A validated close-ended questionnaire and self-rated rating scale were used to gather data from the respondents. The study found out that: i) the respondents perceived the use of Zoom and Google Meet for e-practicum as solutions for teaching and learning in the 21st century; ii) most of the respondents were not adequately prepared for the integration of Zoom and Google Meet into e-teaching practicum; iii) respondents were not pedagogically competent to use Zoom and Google Meet for teaching practicum. This study showed some lapses in TPs' personal development in basic computational skills and teacher digital education programmes. The study suggested solutions that would be useful for concerned stakeholders in digital education industry.

The study determined the self-reported Zoom exhaustion and fatigue (ZEF) levels of physical education teacher education (PETE) students in the Philippines who are attending a flexible learning setup (i.e., synchronous and asynchronous learning) offered by their university as a solution to continue classes during the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic. Utilizing a cross-sectional comparative research design, the study indicates that PETE students were very tired and exhausted both in general and visually after a series of video conferencing within a semester. Furthermore, they were socially-, motivationally-, and emotionally- moderately tired and exhausted. It was observed that students in the PETE program experienced moderate to very tired and exhausted levels of fatigue whenever they participated in synchronous online classes, such as attendance at a video teleconferencing platform. Exploration of how specific mental aspects relate to their general health with regard to their culture and habits is worth exploring, either for students, teachers, or professionals in general.

The COVID-19 virus pandemic has caused all governments to implement distance learning by utilizing information technology, including in academic advising. Studies conducted during the pandemic have shown changes in higher education institutions and students. This study aimed to find out and analyse the level of students' satisfaction with academic advising during the COVID-19 pandemic at public and private universities using five satisfaction indicators, namely tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The survey was conducted online, involving 1158 students from a total of 6 public and private universities in the city of Banjarmasin, Kalimantan Island, Indonesia. The data findings showed that in relation to the academic advising given during the COVID-19 pandemic, the students' satisfaction levels toward the provision of academic advising at both public and private universities during the COVID-19 pandemic were in the same category, which was "very satisfied". Thus, students' satisfaction levels toward academic advising at the university in Banjarmasin were very high, the demographic characteristics of the students, academic advisors, frequency of academic advising meetings and method of the academic advising meetings explained the significant differences in the students' satisfaction levels toward academic advising during COVID-19.

Background: The teachers in one sub-district in the North West province lacked technological knowledge and skills thus did not adopt a blended learning approach in their daily teaching. A partnership between the University of South Africa (Unisa) and schools in the district was forged to train teachers to acquire technological knowledge and skills. Objectives: To identify which online tools Unisa imparted to teachers, investigate how the acquired skills and knowledge helped teachers to adopt a blended learning approach and find out challenges that go with the application of technology. Method: Data were obtained through observation, one-on-one individual interviews and focus group discussions. Results: The Unisa training helped develop teachers' knowledge and skills in the use of TEAMS, Emails, WhatsApp, YouTube and the electronic content material. Teachers gave learners the electronic content (presentation slides and You-videos, question banks) for revision purposes. During the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) learners were given work to do while at home using WhatsApp. Conclusion: The article concludes by indicating that partnerships between schools and institutions of higher learning are a necessity to empower teachers on the use of technology which will lead to the use of a blended learning approach. Contribution: The article adds to the body of knowledge by indicating the need for retraining of teachers especially on technological skills to prepare them for 4th Industrial Revolution and meet the needs of the new cohort of learners-born after technology.

This study investigates the impact of gender differences on the utilization of online platforms and attitudes toward them. A quantitative approach was adopted, employing a questionnaire comprising two domains: utilization and attitudes. The questionnaire consisted of 34 items, and its validity and reliability were assessed. The study's sample comprised 153 randomly selected graduate students from Jerash University. The findings indicate that students' utilization of online learning platforms, particularly the Zoom platform, is high, as is their positive attitude toward it. Furthermore, statistically significant gender-based differences were observed, favoring male students in both platform utilization and attitudes. The study recommends the implementation of a quasi-experimental approach to explore the gender variable's impact on students' platform utilization. Additionally, encouraging the use of Zoom platform among both students and instructors through incentivization is suggested.

This research investigated pre-service teachers' (PSTs) experiences with productive struggle in an online environment, and how it influenced their pedagogical knowledge. This action research study reports on secondary mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs) who completed mathematical tasks in weekly synchronous Zoom sessions to develop their understanding of productive struggle. Vygotsky's (1978) Social Constructivist Theory and the growth mindset framework (Boaler, 2016; Dweck 2006; 2008) provided the lenses through which the research was designed and analyzed. Findings show that presenting opportunities for PSTs to experience productive struggle informs their pedagogical practice, and that providing this experience in an online environment is possible. PSTs gained an increased understanding of the importance of collaborative work, asking purposeful questions, and the alignment between productive struggle and improved mathematical understanding. Mathematical literacy stands as a critical skill imperative for navigating the complexities of the 21st century. Enhancing students' mathematical literacy necessitates comprehensive engagement across the educational landscape. This aligns with the "Guru Penggerak" (GP) initiative, established by the government to serve as educational leaders, propelling the entire educational system forward. Nonetheless, the current GP program needs more specific provisions addressing mathematical literacy, and the existing learning environments for mathematical literacy remain constrained. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop a dedicated mathematical literacy learning environment within the GP framework. This study endeavors to create a mathematically literate learning environment that is both valid and practical, potentially impacting the GP program significantly. Employing a design research approach, the study progresses through three key stages: preliminary, prototyping, and assessment. Seven teachers participated as subjects, using data collection methodologies including walkthroughs, observations, questionnaires, and interviews, which were analyzed descriptively. Findings indicate the development of a model for a mathematical literacy learning environment termed D-C-C with the LEPscO framework, which is deemed valid due to its alignment with the PISA framework, Indonesian educational curriculum, and unambiguous language. Moreover, the model proves practical for implementation within the GP program, exhibiting potential effects such as enhanced teacher satisfaction, learning, organizational support, and utilization of new knowledge, alongside improved student outcomes reflecting heightened mathematical literacy proficiency. This research contributes to educational discourse by introducing the LEPscO Framework, encompassing a Digital-Class-Community learning environment, structured learning processes encompassing training, classroom implementation, knowledge sharing, and community development, and targeted learning outcomes focusing on teachers' comprehension and reinforcement of mathematical literacy in education.

The Washington State University Extension Forestry program switched to all online programming in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 2,000 people participated in our webinars, providing an opportunity to survey a large audience about their webinar preferences. We found that people prefer webinars that are approximately an hour long and offered in the evening or late morning. Participants placed high importance on having a recording available, but they had mixed views on including video of the instructor speaking. Participants found online delivery to be successful and had a strong preference for online programming in the future.

This correlational cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 graduate students to explore their perceived social experiences with the use of synchronous videoconferencing in the online learning environment. By applying the theories of social presence and media richness, this study investigated the perceived relationship between social presence, social space, sociability, and media richness. The communication theories of social presence and media richness were applied to better understand the relationship between the communication medium (videoconferencing) and the interactions within the mediated environments (e.g., Zoom). This correlational crosssectional study explored graduate students perceived social presence and media richness of a synchronous videoconferencing learning environment by investigating how strongly and in what direction social presence, social space, sociability, and media richness were related. A Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to investigate how strongly and in what direction social presence, social space, sociability, and media richness were related in a synchronous videoconferencing learning environment. The results indicated a strong, positive correlation between Social Presence and Social Space (Positive Group Behavior); Social Presence and Sociability; Social Presence and Media Richness; Social Space (Positive Group Behavior) and Sociability; Social Space (Positive Group Behavior) and Media Richness; and Sociability and Media Richness. A moderate, negative correlation was indicated between Social Space (Negative Group Behavior) and Social Presence; Social Space (Negative Group Behavior) and Sociability; and Social Space (Negative Group Behavior) and Media Richness.

Hybrid learning is a relatively new approach in Kazakhstan's educational system. The transition to a new format necessitates a significant amount of effort and restructuring at the universities. The problems of researching the advantages and disadvantages of implementing this kind of instruction in the classroom are very relevant. The study's goal was to investigate students' attitudes towards implementing a hybrid learning environment. A qualitative method of data analysis was applied in the study. 1,186 students participated in hybrid learning at various universities in Kazakhstan. According to the findings, students value the flexibility and convenience of attending classes remotely through a two-way video conference. However, the findings also indicate that this new learning environment faces several pedagogical and technological challenges. These findings emphasize the importance of assisting students in understanding hybrid learning resources and goals thereby creating opportunities for success in hybrid learning. Policymakers in education can use it as a guide to develop policies related to crisis management or inclusive education as well as curriculum documents and resources for hybrid learning.

Working toward internationalization of an educational unit involves planning, partnership, and consistent formative evaluation. This article highlights the development of a strategic partnership, that began before the COVID-19 pandemic, between the academic departments of comprehensive psychology in a university in Japan and social work in a university in the U.S. The partnership began with building connections between faculty to share research and teaching updates and grew to include a collaborative research conference, a shared online class following the COIL model, joint faculty research presentations, and an ongoing study abroad exchange program. Perspectives from faculty at both institutions are presented to provide a holistic picture of how to use strategic actions to bring about mutually beneficial international educational experiences that can be sustained through a global health crisis.

The role of culture instruction in modern language classrooms has varied through the years, most recently presenting the option to learn virtually as opposed to on campus or abroad. The current study compares various learning environments of 49 participants (in-person, abroad, Zoom) to test the efficacy of targeted culture instruction through the analysis of a short film-clip. The research questions guiding this study are: 1) How effective are targeted pragmatic interventions in promoting intercultural communicative competency? 2) Do students studying abroad, online, or on the home-campus approach and complete pragmatic activities similarly? The results from these data suggest that the study away and Zoom participants engaged in the target culture in more meaningful ways than their at-home peers. This initial analysis indicates that short-term study abroad programs and Zoom learning provide environments that may encourage pragmalinguistic and cultural awareness in ways that differ from home-campus based courses, especially when coupled with in-class interventions.

This study investigates healthcare professionals' acceptance of video conferences for in-service training in terms of performance expectancy and social influence. Furthermore, it attempts to determine which properties of video conferences influenced and predicted the adoption of video conferencing technology. We employed the cross-sectional survey research design, one of the descriptive research designs. The participants consisted of 181 physicians from a medical specialty society. To collect data, we used the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology-2 (UTAUT-2) scale. Findings revealed that being able to ask questions during the video conferences, not paying for participation, timing problems, and lack of social interaction predicted the acceptance of video conferences for in-service training regarding performance expectancy and social influence among physicians. This article offers practical recommendations for professionals to adopt and maximize the use of videoconferencing for in-service training. The findings of this study will shed light on future practices and studies regarding the use of video conferencing systems for in-service training by revealing the preferences of physicians and the factors affecting their acceptance behavior.
