Explicit instruction is a teaching model that demonstrates to students what to do and how to do it. One purpose of ideology is to focus the who, what, when, where, and why of a disciplinary field. Trained home economists make a sustained commitment to the core ideology of home economics. Mechanisms for identifying locally relevant challenges faced by individuals, families, and communities are embedded in the home economics knowledge base. To identify challenges and locate solutions (who, what, when, where, and how), home economics education programmes must actively teach or provide explicit instruction about the ideology that underpins the home economics disciplinary field. Neglecting ideology results in teaching unrelated subjects or compartmentalised content that may dilute connection to the core aims of the home economics’ ‘big picture’. This paper outlines how explicit instruction and embedded home economics ideology have positively impacted perceptions of the discipline amongst professionals who are new to the field. In teaching and learning environments, making home economics ideology visible and reinforced continuously across all content specialisation areas, the author observed that students acquired the words and concepts to explain the importance of home economics to others. Professionals who are new to the field became more confident and passionate advocates for home economics, because they had learnt and appreciated, through explicit instruction techniques, the what, the how to, and the why of home economics. Equipped with the discipline’s core ideology, professionals who make visible the home economics ‘big picture’ (i.e., the why) to others are better equipped to enact real-world applications of home economics that can adapt continuously to meet ever-changing and complex societal needs. Teachers' accuracy in judging students' achievement is often assumed to be a general ability of teachers. Based on this assumption, teachers should be at least consistent in their accuracy across different content domains within a school subject. Yet, this assumption has rarely been investigated empirically so far. Data from 54 mathematics teachers (N = 1170 students) and 55 language teachers (N = 1255 students) were analysed using a Bayesian multivariate multilevel modelling approach. Results indicate that latent accuracy measures across content domains indeed are substantially correlated within both investigated subjects, but may still be considered to represent different dimensions. School subjects have been criticized for their inability to make room for 21st century skills and for being disconnected from contemporary modes of knowledge production that work in cross-disciplinary and creative ways. However, other voices have claimed that post-disciplinary curricula underestimate the importance of the construction of intergenerational, specialized conversations about knowledge in schools. This article looks at contemporary curriculum reforms in order to analyze how they relate to these shifts and debates about disciplinary knowledge. The study presents eight curriculum documents set in effect between 2004 and 2018, which act as national regulatory frameworks for compulsory education in Latin America, Europe and Australia. Based on a critical and historical approach to school disciplines and disciplined knowledge, it is discussed how these documents organize, hierarchize and classify school knowledge, and the role and place they allocate to older forms of disciplinary knowledge as well as to new, post-disciplinary organizations. The findings point to complex developments in which both weaker disciplinary frames and the disciplinarization of new content (artistic, design, and technological education) can be observed. Also, the documents express significant national differences, which are telling of divergent political priorities and particular pedagogical traditions that play their part in the configuration of the curriculum frameworks. This approach intends to produce a more complex argument about current curriculum reform trends that debunks the idea that there is an unstoppable standardization around 21st century competences. Schulfächer stehen einerseits in der Kritik, sogenannten '21stCentury Skills' keinen ausreichenden Raum geben zu können; sie wären stattdessen von den aktuellen Formen fächerübergreifender und kreativer Wissensproduktion abgekoppelt. Andererseits wird behauptet, dass überfachliche bzw. nicht mehr an den herkömmlichen Schulfächern organisierte Lehrpläne die Bedeutung generationenübergreifenden, spezialisierten Wissens für den Schulunterricht unterschätzen. In diesem Artikel wird untersucht, ob und in welcher Weise diese Diskurse um Fachlichkeit aktuelle Reformen von Lehrplänen, deren Konzeption und Implementierung beeinflussen. Hierzu wird eine Studie zu acht Lehrplandokumenten vorgestellt, die als nationale Rahmenregelungen zwischen 2004 und 2018 für das jeweilige Pflichtschulwesen in verschiedenen Ländern Lateinamerika, Europas und in Australien in Kraft traten. Aus der Sicht einer kritischen und historischen Auseinandersetzung mit Schulfächern und disziplinärem Wissen wird diskutiert, wie diese Curricula Schulwissen organisieren, hierarchisieren und klassifizieren. Dabei gerät auch in den Blick, welche Funktion und welchen Stellenwert neue Lehrpläne älteren Formen fachlichen Wissens zuweisen, aber auch, wie überfachliche Ansätze Eingang finden. Die Ergebnisse der Studie weisen dabei auf eine Vielzahl komplexer Entwicklungen hin, in denen sowohl die Abnahme fachlicher Rahmensetzungen als auch eine Disziplinarisierung, eine 'Verfachlichung', neuer Bildungsangebote zu beobachten sind. Die Lehrpläne der untersuchten Staaten zeigen im Vergleich erhebliche Unterschiede zueinander auf, denen unterschiedliche pädagogische Traditionen zugrunde liegen, die aber auch Ergebnis differenter politischer Schwerpunktsetzungen sind und die Gestaltung der Lehrplanrahmen beeinflusst haben. Diese Studie soll eine differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen Trends der Lehrplanreform ermöglichen und dabei zugleich die Behauptung entkräften, eine Standardisierung der '21stCentury Skills' schreite unaufhaltsam voran. Content knowledge (CK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) are considered key aspects of teacher competence. Although teacher education and training programs across disciplines focus on the development of CK and PCK, there is little evidence of whether teachers trained in two subjects benefit from reciprocal effects between knowledge in these subjects. To approach this question, the authors investigated the correlation between the CK and PCK in mathematics and economics of N = 96 pre- and in-service teachers trained in both subjects. The authors found a substantial correlation between CK and PCK within a subject and between corresponding knowledge components across subjects, with CK in mathematics related also to PCK in economics. They found that although teachers' professional knowledge structure mirrored domains, CK in mathematics could be useful for teaching economics. In dieser Studie werden Zusammenh��nge zwischen CK und PCK der F��cher Mathematik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften bei N = 96 angehenden und praktizierenden Sekundarstufen-Lehrkr��ften mit dieser F��cherkombination untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen substantielle Zusammenh��nge zwischen CK und PCK innerhalb der F��cher und zwischen den professionellen Wissenskonstrukten ��ber die F��cher hinweg, wobei CK in Mathematik auch mit PCK in Wirtschaftswissenschaften zusammenh��ngt. Perhaps the most difficult aspect of genocide studies to impart to students is that of genocide prevention and response. However, without a critical understanding of these issues, our future leaders and policy makers may be at a disadvantage when faced with very real genocides. This article explores the benefits and challenges of teaching this topic through classroom simulation at the university level by discussing in-depth one simulation created and used by the author. To advance our understanding of private tutoring, this special issue brings together empirical work on important aspects of this multifaceted phenomenon. This article begins with a discussion of conceptual, methodological, and practical differences between the four studies in this special issue (Brehm & Silova, 2014; Guill & Bos, 2014; Ireson & Rushforth, 2014; Lambert & Spinath, 2014). Then, a summary of the most important findings obtained in the four studies sheds light on three different facets of private tutoring, namely on conditions, processes, and effects. The conclusion addresses some directions for future research on private tutoring, including the conceptual clarification of the construct of private tutoring, the examination of factors that make private tutoring effective, and the comparison of private tutoring with other forms of instructional support. Das vorliegende Themenheft stellt empirische Arbeiten vor, die sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten von Nachhilfe befassen und dadurch zu einem besseren Verständnis über dieses facettenreiche Phänomen beitragen. Dieser Artikel beginnt mit einer Diskussion von konzeptuellen, methodologischen und praktischen Unterschieden zwischen den vier Studien des Themenhefts (Brehm & Silova, 2014; Guill & Bos, 2014; Ireson & Rushforth, 2014; Lambert & Spinath, 2014). Dann folgt eine Zusammenfassung der wichtigsten Ergebnisse der vier Studien. Hierzu werden drei unterschiedliche Facetten der Nachhilfe, nämlich Bedingungen, Prozesse und Effekte, beleuchtet. Schließlich werden einige Richtungen für zukünftige Forschung dargestellt, die sich auf die konzeptuelle Klärung des Konstrukts der Nachhilfe, auf die Untersuchung von Faktoren, die Nachhilfe wirksam machen, und auf den Vergleich von Nachhilfe mit anderen Formen instruktionaler Unterstützung beziehen.
