Extreme heatwaves will occur more frequently and with higher intensity in future. Their consequences for human health can be fatal if adaptation measures will not be taken. This study analyses factors related to heat adaptation measures in private households in Germany. During the summer months of 2019, indoor temperatures were measured in over 500 private households in the City of Augsburg, Germany, accompanied by a survey to find out about heat perception and adaptation measures. Hypotheses deducted from the Protective Action Decision Model were tested using one-way ANOVAs, regression analysis and in the end a multiple hierarchical regression model. The results of the hypotheses tested imply an influence of knowledge and heat risk perception of heat adaptation behaviour and an influence of age on heat risk perception. The results of the regression model show an influence of the efficacy-related attribute, of age, indoor temperature, subjective heat stress and health implications to heat adaptation behaviour. Unser Planet steht vor grossen Herausforderungen, die durch Umweltschäden verursacht werden. Wissenschaftler sind zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass menschliche Aktivitäten die Hauptursache für die Umweltschäden sind. Unternehmen sind also zumindest teilweise für die Umweltkrise verantwortlich; sie können aber auch Teil der Lösung sein. Um die ökologische Nachhaltigkeit in die Unternehmenstätigkeit zu integrieren und nachhaltiges Verhalten von Unternehmen zu fördern, wurden verschiedene Systeme, Vorschriften und Rahmenbedingungen geschaffen. Aber warum zeigen die Daten von Umweltanalysen trotz des technologischen und sozialen Fortschritts, des zunehmenden Umweltbewusstseins und der staatlichen Regulierung immer schlechtere und alarmierende Ergebnisse? Diese Frage ist sowohl für die Wissenschaft als auch die Praxis derzeit von grosser Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Dissertation zielt darauf ab, diese Frage zu beantworten, indem sie sich auf freiwillige Umweltinitiativen fokussiert, die in den 1980er Jahren entstanden sind, um die Lücken ineffizienter Umweltvorschriften zu schliessen. Freiwillige Umweltinitiativen wie Umweltzertifizierungen, die Offenlegung nicht-finanzieller Informationen und unternehmenseigene Nachhaltigkeitsprogramme sind bei Unternehmen aus verschiedenen Branchen rund um den Globus beliebt. Trotz der relativ umfangreichen Literatur zu freiwilligen Umweltinitiativen sind die Forschungsergebnisse fragmentiert und es ist nicht klar, welche Art von Unternehmen sich für die Teilnahme an freiwilligen Umweltinitiativen entscheiden, und ob diese Initiativen mit verbesserten Umweltergebnissen einhergehen oder lediglich als Katalysator für symbolisches Verhalten ohne Nutzen für das gesellschaftliche Wohlergehen dienen. Ausserdem konzentriert sich die derzeitige Forschung weitgehend auf eine begrenzte Anzahl von entwickelten Volkswirtschaften, was unser Verständnis dafür untergräbt, wie diese Initiativen weltweit funktionieren. Diese Arbeit beginnt mit einem Einführungskapitel, welches den Hintergrund und den Beitrag der Dissertation darlegt und die vier Einzelbeiträge zusammenfasst. Die ersten beiden Artikel (Kapitel 2 und 3) untersuchen unter Verwendung metaanalytischer Methoden die Faktoren, welche die Entscheidung der Unternehmen an freiwilligen Umweltprogrammen teilzunehmen beeinflussen, die Ergebnisse durch die Teilnahme, sowie die Rolle der Stringenz der Programme in diesen Zusammenhängen. Der dritte und vierte Artikel (Kapitel 4 und 5) basiert auf einem Datensatz börsennotierter Unternehmen weltweit und untersucht mittels Regressionsanalysen die Rolle des Staates bei der Verhinderung von Greenwashing und die Rolle von Greenwashing in Familienunternehmen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Dissertation zeigen, dass die Teilnahme an freiwilligen Nachhaltigkeitsinitiativen von einer Reihe von Unternehmens-, Programm- und institutionellen Faktoren abhängen. Damit diese Initiativen jedoch ihre Ziele effektiv erreichen, und um symbolisches Verhalten von Unternehmen zu verhindern, sind strenge Vorschriften und andere Governance-Mechanismen von entscheidender Bedeutung., Our planet is facing great challenges caused by environmental degradation, and scientists have concluded that the major cause is increased human activity. Businesses are at least substantially responsible for the environmental crisis, but can also be part of the solution. Systems, regulations, and frameworks have been put in place to integrate environmental sustainability into business activity and encourage sustainable behavior amongst firms. But why is it the case that, despite technological and social progress, increases in environmental issue awareness, and government regulation, data from ecological analyses show worsening and alarming results? This question is of great concern to both academic and practitioner communities. This research program aims to address this question by focusing on voluntary environmental initiatives that emerged in the 1980s to fill voids in inefficient environmental regulations. Voluntary environmental initiatives - such as environmental certifications, disclosures of non-financial information, and companies own sustainability programs - are popular among companies operating in various industries around the globe. Despite the relatively large body of literature, the evidence from research is fragmented and inconclusive with regards to what kind of companies choose to participate in voluntary environmental initiatives and whether these initiatives are related to improved environmental outcomes or if they simply amount to symbolic acts with no benefit to societal welfare. Moreover, current research is largely focused on a narrow set of developed economies, which undermines our understanding of how these initiatives operate globally. This thesis starts with an introductory chapter that provides the background and contribution of the dissertation and summarizes the four individual papers. The first two papers (Chapter 2 and 3) use meta-analytical methods to examine antecedents and outcomes of firm participation in voluntary environmental programs and the role of program stringency in these relationships. The third and fourth papers (Chapter 4 and 5) are based on regression analyses on a sample of publicly listed firms globally to examine the role of the state in greenwashing prevention and greenwashing in family firms, respectively. The outcomes of this research program suggest that adoption of voluntary sustainability initiatives is contingent on an array of firm, program, and institutional factors, and suggest that, for these initiatives to be effective in achieving their goals, stringent regulations and governance mechanisms are critical to prevent symbolic behavior among firms.

Nowadays, a large number of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are used in human as well as in veterinary medicine and introduced into the municipal wastewater system, which are cleaned by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Different kinds of drugs and also PPCPs are found in the effluent of WWTPs, which is introduced into the environment. The present work is dedicated to study the uptake and metabolization of the sartan drug telmisartan (a drug used to treat hypertension) and methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butylparaben and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (substances widely used as preserving agents) by different. The plants were grown hydroponically in a drug-containing cultivation medium and afterwards harvested, extracted and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS). Chromatograms, as well as mass spectra were studied. Hence, the determined exact masses of the compounds and their fragmentation patterns in dual stage MS (MS/MS) experiments allowed the tentative identification of possible metabolites. Thereby, eleven potential metabolites of telmisartan could be identified tentatively, in two cases no suggestions for molecular formulas could be made. The parent drug telmisartan was taken up by every plant and could therefore be detected in the respective chromatograms. The knowledge achieved from the treatment of the plants with relatively high concentrations of telmisartan (mg L1 range) was employed to develop an analytical approach allowing to analyze extracts from plants cultivated in actual WWTP effluents. Thereby, next to the parent drug one major metabolite, namely, telmisartan glucose could be identified tentatively. When exposing the plants to the different parabens, neither phase I nor phase II metabolites could be identified due to too low signal intensities. Yemen is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. The water deficit has been aggravated by the rapidly increasing demands for both surface and groundwater resources that are being unsustainably exploited. To address the country’s severe water scarcity, the government has adopted long-term intervention policies as stated in ‘Yemen's Strategic Vision 2025’. These policies are aimed at restoring the balance between water demand and availability, and at reducing the existing water deficit. Although 11 years have passed since this vision was adopted, the water deficit is still on the rise. The present situation raises questions about the efficiency of the intervention policies adopted by ‘Yemen's Strategic Vision 2025’ and about the effectiveness of implementing these policies. Another fundamental question pertains to the availability of a strategic assessment tool in the water resources sector that can be used to assess strategically future and current policies, strategies and plans, in order to ensure their efficiency in supporting water resources and in producing the positive impacts for which these strategic initiatives were developed in the first place. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is an assessment tool designed to function at a strategic level and help to bring aspects of environmental sustainability into the decisionmaking process. This research aims to demonstrate the potential of SEA in enhancing environmental sustainability in water policies for achieving sustainability of water resources in Yemen. In order to show the potential of SEA in the Yemeni water resources sector, this research has applied SEA methodologies and adopted a scenario-building approach for assessing the intervention policies adopted by ‘Yemen's Strategic Vision 2025’ to support augmentation of water resources. Qualitative and quantitative approaches have been used in this research. Quantitative historical data on water availability, water demand and water savings by interventions have been collected from the databases of national institutions and international organizations concerned. Statistical analyses have been used to project future trends until 2025. Qualitative analyses of relevant studies and reports covering the environmental, administrative, sociocultural and political-economic aspects of water resources management in Yemen have been implemented as well. In addition, 13 semi-structured key informant interviews have been conducted with decision-makers, managers and leading experts in the water and irrigation sectors. The research produced three future scenarios for the total water balance that may play out until 2025 in Yemen. These scenarios provide impact assessment and alternatives’ comparison of the existing intervention policies. The resulting scenarios are as follows: the ‘Business as Usual’ scenario, which forms an assessment of currently applied interventions and provides an image for the future, if current interventions are maintained at the same pace; the ‘Do-nothing’ scenario representing the situation if no interventions are implemented; and the ‘Sustainability’ scenario, which represents the potential future of the total water balance if existing interventions are to be scaled up and out. The findings confirm the significant potential of currently adopted intervention policies to support water resources. They also reveal that the current level of implementing the intervention policies has hindered the potential of these intervention policies in achieving the expected positive impact on the water balance by 2025. In order to achieve a significant decrease in the water deficit, the strategic quantitative targets that need to be implemented were identified. The methodology followed in implementing the research and achieving the findings demonstrates the potential of SEA in enhancing environmental sustainability in water policies for achieving integrated and sustainable water resources management in Yemen. The recommendations of the research covered improving the existing water balance as well as improving the assessment and planning context in the water resources sector. In order to improve the water balance situation, the research recommends implementing quantitative targets for water savings and augmentations, such as those developed by this research. These targets have been identified based on the capacities of sectors implementing these interventions. The research also recommends further decentralization of planning and management of water resources and the establishment of Water User Associations (WUAs) as the main vehicles for ensuring sustainable planning and management of water resources, including the scale out of interventions, subject to assessment in this research. In order to improve assessment and planning of water resources, the research recommends the adoption of SEA, the updating of water resources data and conducting regular assessments of policies, plans and programmes as part of monitoring their impact and providing a chance for amending these policies and strategies, if required, to achieve sustainability of water resources. Die Strategische Umweltprüfung (SUP) ist ein Bewertungsinstrument, welches entwickelt wurde, um auf strategischer Ebene Aspekte der umweltpolitischen Nachhaltigkeit in die Entscheidungsprozesse zu integrieren. Vorliegende Arbeit soll das Potential der SUP zur Verbesserung der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit der Wasserpolitik in der Republik Jemen analysieren. Um das Potential der SUP im jemenitischen Wasserressourcen Sektor aufzuzeigen, wurden die Methoden der SUP angewandt und ein Szenario-Ansatz für die Bewertung der Interventionspolitik nach den Richtlinien "Jemens Strategische Vision 2025' zur Unterstützung von Wasserressourcen entwickelt. In der Arbeit werden drei zukünftige Szenarien für den gesamten Wasserhaushalt dargestellt, die bis zum Jahr 2025 im Jemen auftreten können. Diese Szenarien bilden die Folgenabschätzung und einen Vergleich der angenommenen Alternativen der Interventionspolitik dar. Die daraus resultierenden Szenarien sind wie folgt: ein "Business as Usual"-Szenario, welches eine Bewertung der derzeit angewandten Interventionen abbildet, und daraus ein Szenario ableitet, wenn die aktuelle Interventionen im selben Ausmaß angewendet werden. Das "Do Nothing"-Szenario, welches die Situation darstellt, wenn keine Maßnahmen durchgeführt werden. Zuletzt wird das "Nachhaltigkeits"-Szenario abgebildet, welches das zukünftige Potential des gesamten Wasserhaushalts darstellt, wenn vorhandene Interventionen erweitert werden. Die Ergebnisse bestätigen das signifikante Potential zur derzeit angenommenen Interventionspolitik zur Unterstützung der Wasserressourcen. Sie zeigen aber auch, dass der aktuelle Stand der Umsetzung der Interventionspolitik das Potential dieser, bei Erreichung der erwarteten positiven Auswirkungen auf den Wasserhaushalt im Jahr 2025, behindert hat. Um eine signifikante Verringerung des Wasserdefizits zu erreichen, wurden strategische, quantitative Zielvorgaben identifiziert. Die angewandte Methodik bei der Implementierung der Forschungsergebnisse zeigt das Potenzial der SUP zur Verbesserung der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit in der Wasserbewirtschaftung zur Erreichung einer integrierten und nachhaltigen Wasserressourcenbewirtschaftung in der Republik Jemen.

The increased use of agricultural inputs like fertilizers and pesticides led to wide-spread negative environmental impacts of agriculture in the North China Plain (NCP). The context of this research is that, due to continued growth of the population and the economy, the demand for agricultural products in China is gradually rising. However resources like land and water are scarce in China. Therefore new strategies need to be developed which do not put additional strains on the environment but meet the expected demand. The NCP is regarded as China?s most important agricultural region. This work aims at describing and discussing the environmental effects of agriculture in the NCP. The extent of these environmental impacts is presented. An essential part of this work is the in-depth description and analysis of the current cropping systems and farming practices, which is based on the findings a household survey. The central hypothesis of this work is that a change of the management systems is able to meet the production goals, to achieve a higher input-output efficiency and to reduce negative environmental impacts. Embedded in the objectives of this work, the main goals are the description of current agricultural practices and related negative environmental impacts, the definition of agro-environmental management and policy measures, impact analysis of management and policy measures and the development of suggestions for further research. The second chapter aims at introducing the background of this research, i.e. the environmental impacts of agriculture. Hereby the focus lies on the introduction of relevant and characteristic farming practices and on the related institutional setting. Then the processes of data acquisition and data handling for this work are described. The descriptive analysis presents the findings from a survey in July 2008; it aims at describing the characteristics of the surveyed farm households. Chapter 5 describes the methodologies which are applied for the analysis in this work. The first part describes the methodology of Linear Programming and its selection process. The second part explains the selection process for the integrated households. The last part describes the processes of environmental assessment by means of selected indicators. In chapter 6 the model is applied to simulate and analyze the selected households in changing scenarios. Each Scenario is described individually. Then the simulation results are presented and discussed. In chapter 7 possible strategies to reduce environmental impacts of farming in the NCP ? considering the objectives of this work: sustainability and food security ? are discussed. The discussion focuses on the two main problems in the research area: fertilization and water. The analysis showed that current farming practices in the research area are not sustainable and can, thus, threaten future food security in China. The dilemma of the research area is that intensive agricultural production cannot be reduced because high yields are needed to feed the growing demand from a (economically) growing population. Simultaneously high resource consumption and pollution from farming cannot continue as that could eventually result in irreversible damage to agriculture in the NCP and also threatens livelihoods. Finally strategic policy recommendations, characteristics of improved management practices and recommendations for further research are presented. These recommendations can play an important role in decision guiding for policy makers. After reviewing other studies in the NCP, it has to be concluded that this work represents one of the most comprehensive analysis of the agricultural practices in the Hebei province. It was demonstrated that management practices for maize and wheat exist which can result in higher input-output efficiency and which are economically more profitable ? especially production options which include intercropping of other crops or demand-driven fertilization and irrigation. The hypothesis was tested to be valid. The simulation of optimization options showed that economically more profitable production options exist. These optimized production options are characterized by a more efficient factor input (mainly water and fertilization) and resulting decreased environmental impacts. The policy of a premium for reduced water use resulted in the highest simulated increases of total contribution margins with simultaneously reduced negative environmental impacts. However the simulation also revealed that, in order to ensure food security, incentives for producing wheat should be provided as it is the economically least profitable main crop, but it has important functions for own consumption. The simulation also revealed that policies aimed at increasing output prices of the main crops (in combination with optimized production options) can result in total higher contribution margins and decreased negative environmental impacts and higher resource use efficiency. It should be noted that the optimum results did not integrate production options which the surveyed farmers are currently applying ? this indicates that current practices are not efficient. Many studies state that knowledge transfer systems and extension services in the NCP are deficient. The survey showed that the majority of the households did not have contact with the extension services, and, moreover, most of the households never received agricultural training. A knowledge transfer program can be an efficient tool to reduce environmental impacts of farming in the NCP. In addition specific recommendations and systems under considerations of socio-economic approaches have to be developed to improve knowledge transfer and services to farmers in the NCP. Appropriate decision support systems for efficient land use in the research area have to be developed. This study showed that laws and regulations regarding environmental impacts exist, but they are not reliably enforced. Many studies state that the current institutional framework for water management is inadequate and that it, thus, represents one of the causes for the overexploitation of water resources. Therefore the responsibilities should be clearly defined in order to be able to create incentives for saving water and to increase efficiencies. Furthermore, farmers? water rights are not secure and transparent. Therefore plans, based on scientific estimations for water supply and demand, are needed to clearly define and enforce water use rights. Besides clearly defined and enforced water use rights, also longer, enforced and secure land-use rights might facilitate the adoption of sustainable farming practices. Also the institutional set-up complicates the implementation of policies. Therefore institutional change with coordinated efforts is needed. Decentralized and regionalized administrations might increase the effectiveness of policies. In addition the institutional framework has to be updated to the specific requirements in the NCP. One of the main reasons for problems related to water management is that it represents a mostly unregulated resource in the NCP. The survey showed that fertilizer use is strongly varying, overuse and undersupply occur in the research area. The strongly varying and inadequate fertilizer applications endanger the sustainability of the agricultural systems in the NCP. Furthermore the organic matter contents in the soils are too low. The survey also revealed that the farmers in the research area are not informed about the quality of their soils. Integrated into knowledge transfer programs, providing opportunities for soil analysis to the local farmers could result in fertilization practices which are based on the nutrient contents of the soil and, thus, are more efficient. Structural development projects in the Chinese rural areas need to be continued, especially in the research are, to avoid a rural exodus. The living conditions in the rural areas ? in terms of income, education and health services ? are still not comparable with the conditions in urban areas. Chinese policy has to focus on stopping the further decline of the ground water tables. Furthermore a conscious water use and environmental awareness for all stakeholders has to be created in order to avoid that pollution or resource scarcity and misuse will further reduce agricultural production in the NCP. The social costs of further decreased agricultural production in the NCP would be unbearable. Der erhöhte Einsatz von landwirtschaftlichen Betriebsstoffen (wie z.B. Düngemittel und Pestizide) hat zu weit verbreiteten negativen Umweltauswirkungen der Landwirtschaft in der Nordchinesischen Tiefebene (NCP) geführt. Der Kontext dieser Arbeit ist der fortschreitende Anstieg der Nachfrage nach Agrarprodukten aufgrund des kontinuierlichen Wachstums der Chinesischen Wirtschaft und Bevölkerung. Ressourcen wie Land und Wasser sind jedoch knapp in China. Daher müssen neue Strategien entwickelt werden, welche keine weiteren Belastungen für die Umwelt darstellen, aber den erwarteten Bedarf decken. Die NCP wird als wichtigste Agrarregion Chinas angesehen. Diese Arbeit analysiert und beschreibt die Umweltauswirkungen der Landwirtschaft in der NCP. Der Umfang dieser Umweltauswirkungen wird vorgestellt. Ein wesentlicher Teil dieser Arbeit ist die gründliche Beschreibung und Analyse der derzeitigen Anbausysteme und Bewirtschaftungsmethoden, welche sich auf die Ergebnisse einer Haushaltsbefragung stützen. Die zentrale Hypothese dieser Arbeit ist, dass eine Veränderung der Managementsysteme die Produktionsziele erfüllen kann, die input-output Effizienz erhöhen und die negativen Umweltauswirkungen verringern kann. In diesem Kontext lauten die Ziele der Arbeit: die Darstellung der derzeitigen Bewirtschaftungsmethoden und der zugehörigen Umweltauswirkungen, die Definition von Agrar- und Umweltbewirtschaftungs- und Politikmaßnahmen, die Analyse der Auswirkungen von Bewirtschaftungs- und Politikmaßnahmen und die Entwicklung von Vorschlägen für weitere Forschung. Das zweite Kapitel stellt die Hintergründe dieser Arbeit vor, d.h. im speziellen die Umweltauswirkungen der Landwirtschaft. Hierbei liegt der Fokus auf der Beschreibung der relevanten und charakteristischen Bewirtschaftungsmethoden, sowie dem institutionellen Rahmen. Dann werden die Prozesse der Datenbeschaffung und der Datenhandhabung dargestellt. Die beschreibende Analyse stellt die Ergebnisse der Haushaltsuntersuchung vom Juli 2008 vor; die Kenndaten der untersuchten Haushalte werden in diesem Kapitel beschrieben. Kapitel 5 erklärt die Analysemethoden dieser Arbeit. Zuerst werden die Auswahlprozesse und die Methoden der linearen Programmierung erklärt. Der zweite Teil stellt den Auswahlprozess für die Haushalte dar. Der letzte Teil erklärt die Umweltbewertung anhand von ausgewählten Umweltindikatoren. Im 6. Kapitel wird das Model angewandt, um die ausgewählten Haushalte in verschiedenen Szenarien zu simulieren und zu analysieren. Im Anschluss werden die Ergebnisse der Simulation beschrieben und analysiert. In Kapitel 7 werden ? unter Berücksichtigung der Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit ? die möglichen Strategien, um die Umweltauswirkungen der Landwirtschaft in der NCP zu reduzieren, diskutiert. Diese Diskussion konzentriert sich auf die beiden Hauptprobleme der Forschungsregion: Düngung und Bewässerung. Im letzten Teil dieser Arbeit werden strategische Politikempfehlungen, die Charakteristika von verbesserten Bewirtschaftungsmaßnahmen und Vorschläge für weitere Forschung vorgestellt. Diese Empfehlungen können bei der Entscheidungsfindung von politischen Entscheidungsträgern eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die derzeitigen Anbausysteme in der Forschungsregion nicht nachhaltig sind und daher die zukünftige Ernährungssicherung in China bedrohen können. Das Dilemma der Forschungsregion ist, dass die intensive landwirtschaftliche Produktion nicht verringert werden kann, da hohe Erträge benötigt werden, um die (ökonomisch) wachsende Chinesische Bevölkerung zu ernähren. Gleichzeitig können der hohe Ressourcenverbrauch und die Umweltverschmutzung der Landwirtschaft nicht fortgeführt werden, da dies letztendlich zu irreversiblen Schäden in der Landwirtschaft in der NCP führen könnte, die dann die Existenzgrundlagen bedrohen. Nach der Revision von anderen Studien in der NCP wurde festgestellt, dass diese Arbeit eine der umfangreichsten Analysen der landwirtschaftlichen Praxis in der Hebei Provinz darstellt. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass Bewirtschaftungsmaßnahmen für Mais und Weizen existieren, welche zu einer verbesserten input-output Effizienz führen und ökonomisch profitabler sind ? speziell Maßnahmen mit Zwischenfruchtanbau oder bedarfsorientierter Düngung und Bewässerung. Die Gültigkeit der Hypothese konnte also bewiesen werden. Die Simulation von Optimierungsoptionen hat gezeigt, dass Anbaumaßnahmen existieren, welche ökonomisch profitabler sind. Diese optimierten Anbaumethoden sind durch einen effizienteren Faktoreneinsatz (hauptsächlich Wasser und Düngung) und resultierende geringere Umweltauswirkungen charakterisiert. Die Politikmaßnahme der Prämienzahlung für reduzierten Wasserverbrauch hat zu den höchsten simulierten Gesamtdeckungsbeiträgen und gleichzeitigen reduzierten Umwelteinflüssen geführt. Die Simulation hat auch gezeigt, dass Anreize für die Produktion von Weizen geschaffen werden sollten, da Weizen ökonomisch die am wenigsten profitable Hauptfrucht ist aber eine wichtige Rolle für den Eigenverbrauch in der NCP spielt. Die Simulation hat auch gezeigt, dass Politikmaßnahmen welche auf höhere Marktpreise für die Hauptfrüchte zielen (in Verbindung mit optimierten Anbaumaßnahmen) zu erhöhten Gesamtdeckungsbeiträgen, verminderten Umweltauswirkungen sowie verbesserter Ressourcennutzungseffizienz führen können. Es sollte noch angemerkt werden, dass in den optimierten Ergebnissen keine Anbausysteme die momentan von den Haushalten angewendet werden integriert sind. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass die momentanen Anbaustrategien nicht effizient sind. Viele Studien sind der Auffassung, dass Wissenstransfersysteme und staatlich Beratungssysteme in der NCP unzulänglich sind. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die Mehrheit der Haushalte keinen Kontakt zu Beratungsinstitutionen hatte und darüber hinaus die meisten Haushalte auch keinerlei landwirtschaftliche Ausbildung erhalten haben. Ein Wissenstransferprogramm kann daher ein effizientes Instrument darstellen, um die Umweltauswirkungen der Landwirtschaft in der NCP zu reduzieren. Darüber hinaus müssen spezifische Empfehlungen und Systeme ? unter Berücksichtigung von Sozio-ökonomischen Ansätzen ? entwickelt werden, um den Wissenstransfer und die Dienste für die Landwirte in der NCP zu verbessern. Adäquate Entscheidungshilfesysteme für effiziente Landnutzung in der Forschungsregion müssen entwickelt werden. Diese Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass zwar Gesetze und Regulierungen für die Umwelteinflüsse existieren, diese aber nicht verlässlich durchgesetzt werden. Viele Studien sehen den derzeitigen institutionellen Rahmen für das Wassermanagement als nicht adäquat an und sehen in ihm einen der Gründe für die Übernutzung der Wasserressourcen. Daher sollten die Verantwortlichkeiten klar aufgeteilt werden, um Anreize zum Wassersparen bieten zu können und um die Effizienz zu erhöhen. Darüber hinaus sind auch die Rechte der Landwirte hinsichtlich Wasser nicht sicher und transparent. Basierend auf wissenschaftlichen Einschätzungen für den Wasserverbrauch und das Wasservorkommen werden Pläne benötigt, um Wasserrechte eindeutig zu definieren und durchzusetzen. Neben definierten und durchgesetzten Wasserrechten könnten auch längerfristige, durchgesetzte und sichere Landrechte die Adoption von nachhaltigen Bewirtschaftungsmethoden erleichtern. Auch der institutionelle Aufbau verkompliziert die Durchführung von Politikmaßnahmen. Daher ist institutioneller Wandel mit koordinierten Anstrengungen notwendig. Dezentralisierte und regionalisierte Verwaltungen können die Effektivität von Politikmaßnahmen erhöhen. Zusätzlich muss der institutionelle Aufbau den spezifischen Gegebenheiten der NCP angepasst werden. Eines der Hauptprobleme bezüglich des Wassermanagements ist, dass Wasser eine größtenteils unkontrollierte Ressource in der NCP darstellt. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die Düngeranwendung stark variiert; Über- und Unterdosierung treten in der Forschungsregion auf. Stark variierende und inadäquate Düngeranwendung gefährden die Nachhaltigkeit der landwirtschaftleichen Systeme in der NCP. Des Weiteren ist der Gehalt an organischer Substanz im Boden zu gering. Die Umfrage hat gezeigt, dass die Landwirte in der Forschungsregion nicht über die Qualität ihrer Böden informiert sind. Integriert in Wissenstransferprogramme, dass zur Verfügung stellen von Möglichkeiten für die Analyse von Böden könnte zu Düngeranwendungen führen, welche auf dem Nährstoffgehalt der Böden basieren und daher effizienter sind. Strukturelle Entwicklungsprojekte in den ländlichen Regionen Chinas müssen fortgeführt werden, um weitere starke Landflucht zu vermeiden ? speziell in der Forschungsregion. Die Lebensbedingungen in den ländlichen Gegenden, hinsichtlich Einkommen, Bildungs- und Gesundheitsdiensten, sind immer noch nicht vergleichbar mit den urbanen Gebieten. Die Chinesische Politik muss sich auf die Beendigung des weiteren Absinkens des Grundwasserniveaus konzentrieren. Des Weiteren müssen eine sparsamere Wassernutzung und ein Umweltbewusstsein für alle Beteiligten geschaffen werden, um zu verhindern, dass Verschmutzung, Ressourcenmangel und ?fehlgebrauch die landwirtschaftliche Produktion in der NCP weiter reduzieren. Die sozialen Kosten der weiteren Verringerung der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion in der NCP wären nicht tragbar.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is a concept and a decision-making support tool. Based on its definitions, it is claimed that SEA can 1) contribute to the integration of environmental concerns into strategic decisions: policies, plans and programmes (PPPs); and that SEA 2) is a systematic process. Although these claims are widely acknowledged in SEA research and practice, they remain largely unsubstantiated empirically. To date, SEA research is dominated by qualitative-type approaches, investigating aspects of effectiveness, of context and of elements of good practice. Quantitative-type research has been rare, and often criticised on the basis that it is unable to capture and address the dynamic nature of PPP-making processes, i.e. the involvement of a wide range of actors, the input of new information and the existence of different views and interests, which give rise to uncertainty and unpredictability. Nevertheless, the potential of quantitative research in SEA has yet to be fully explored, and the extent to which SEA is meeting the two definitional claims mentioned above remains untested and undetermined. Within this context, this study aims to apply a quantitative research approach to SEA and verify the extent to which SEA contributes to environmental integration (EI) and the extent to which SEA behaves systematically. It achieves this by looking at UK practice as a case study. It applies questionnaire survey, correlation analysis and sensitivity analysis as methods of quantitative research approach. The findings of this research confirmed that quantitative methodologies can be successfully applied to evaluate the presence and quality of SEA procedures and their outputs. Furthermore, the degree of EI reflected in plans and programmes (PPs) because of the SEA, as reflected in the PP’s environmental objectives and indicators, can be quantitatively evaluated. However, to enhance this quantitative evaluation process, clearer and more precise environmental objectives are needed. Of the two definitional SEA claims evaluated, that (1) SEA contributes to EI in PPPs and that (2) SEA is a systematic process), there was weak evidence to support the claim that SEA significantly achieved EI within UK SEA practice. Of the second claim, it was concluded that the UK SEA process behaves as a systematic process composed of negative and positive feedbacks. Moreover, the UK SEA process is a stable system prone to over-development and with inadequate negative feedbacks to facilitate self-regulation of the SEA process towards a certain range of EI. Based on the findings, it is recommended that if SEA effectiveness and theory-building are to be enhanced, application of more quantitative methods and hypothetico-deductive paradigms of scientific enquiry should be applied in order to test and verify stated hypotheses. Application of other quantitative methods such as Factor Analysis and/or Principal Component Analysis should be considered in order to further establish the explanatory elements for EI achievement, and contributory roles of various SEA elements in achieving EI. Furthermore, quantitative approaches can facilitate calibrating of SEA reports and EI achieved, and enhance standardisation and quality control. It is further recommended that if SEA is to be understood as a systematic process with dynamic interactions amongst its elements, then further research needs to be conducted to improve follow-up mechanisms and establish quality hold points in order to enhance quality assurance. Specifically, more negative feedback loops or best practice standards and quality control hold points should be integrated into the SEA system in order for it to better self-regulate towards achieving a defined range of EI. Strategische Umweltprüfung (SUP) ist ein Konzept und ein Entscheidungsunterstützungsinstrument. Basierend auf seiner Definition wird behauptet, dass SUP erstens zur Integration von Umweltbelangen in strategische Entscheidungen, besonders in Richtlinien, Pläne und Programme (RPP) beitragen kann und zweitens ein systematischer Prozess ist. Obwohl diese Behauptungen in der SUP-Forschung und Praxis weitgehend anerkannt sind, bleiben sie jedoch bisher empirisch unbegründet. Bisher wird SUP-Forschung hauptsächlich von qualitativen Ansätzen dominiert, die Aspekte der Wirksamkeit, des Kontexts und bewährte Praktiken untersuchen. Quantitative Ansatzforschung wird selten durchgeführt und wird oft dahingehend kritisiert, das sie nicht in der Lage ist, die Dynamik der RPP-Formulierungsverfahren zu erfassen und aufzugreifen. Dies beinhaltet die Einbindung einer großen Anzahl von Akteuren, neuen Informationen und das Vorhandensein verschiedener Auffassungen und Interessen, die zu Unsicherheit und Unberechenbarkeit führen. Gleichwohl ist das Potential der quantitativen Forschung in der Strategischen Umweltprüfung noch nicht vollständig untersucht und der Umfang, in welchem SUP den beiden oben genannten Behauptungen genügt, bleibt ungeprüft und unbestimmt. Diese Arbeit zielt deshalb darauf ab, einen quantitativen Forschungsansatz für SUP anzuwenden und zu verifizieren, in welchem Maß SUP zur Umweltintegration (UI) beiträgt und inwieweit es systematisch ist. Dies wird durch die Untersuchung der gängigen Praxis in Großbritannien als Fallstudie erreicht. Die Arbeit wendet Fragebogenstudie, Korrelationsanalyse und Sensitivitätsanalyse als Methoden eines quantitativen Forschungsansatzes an. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung bestätigen, dass quantitative Methodologien erfolgreich angewandt werden können, um die Präsenz und Qualität von SUP-Verfahren und ihrer Outputs zu evaluieren. Zudem kann der Grad der Integration von Umweltaspekten, der sich in den Umweltzielen und –indikatoren der Pläne und Programme widerspiegelt, quantitativ evaluiert werden. Um jedoch diesen quantitativen Evaluationsprozess zu verbessern, werden klarere und präzisere Umweltziele benötigt. Bezüglich der beiden oben genannten und evaluierten Behauptungen, gab es nur schwache Hinweise, die die Behauptung unterstützten, dass strategische Umweltprüfung eine signifikante Umweltintegration in der SUP-Praxis in Großbritannien erreicht hat. Aufgrund der zweiten Behauptung wurde geschlussfolgert, dass SUP in Großbritannien sich als systematischer Prozess darstellt, der aus positiven und negativen Rückkopplungseffekten besteht. Jedoch ist der SUP-Prozess in Großbritannien ein stabiles System, das für eine Überentwicklung anfällig ist und inadequate negative Rückkopplungseffekte hat um eine Selbstregulierung zu erleichtern. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen wird für eine erhöhte Effizienz von strategischen Umweltprüfungen und eine verbesserte Theoriebildung empfohlen, dass quantitativere Methoden und hypothetisch-deduktivere Paradigmen bei wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen angewendet werden sollten, um vertretene Hypothesen zu testen und zu verifizieren. Zum Beispiel sollte die Anwendung anderer quantitativer Methoden wie der Faktoranalyse und/oder der Hauptkomponentenanalyse erwogen werden. Diese Methoden können aufzeigen, inwieweit verschiedene SUP Elemente zum Erreichen von Umweltintegration beitragen können. Darüber hinaus können quantitative Ansätze die Kalibrierung von strategischer Umweltprüfung und –integration erleichtern und die Standardisierung und Qualitätskontrolle weiterentwickeln. Wenn SUP als systematischer Prozess mit dynamischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen seinen Elementen verstanden wird, wird zudem empfohlen, weitere Untersuchungen durchzuführen, um die Kontrollmechanismen zu verbessern und Qualitätskontrollpunkte für eine Weiterentwicklung der Qualitätssicherung zu etablieren. Insbesondere sollten mehr negative Rückkopplungsschleifen oder Best Practice Standards und Qualitätskontrollpunkte in das SUP-System integriert werden, so dass eine bessere Selbstregulierung bezüglich eines vordefinierten Umfangs von Umweltintegration erreicht werden kann.

"This paper examines how reforms of the regulatory business environment inspired by the World Bank's Doing Business reports impact the economic participation of women in developing countries. It focuses on gender-related impacts of four business environment reforms in areas of 1) Obtaining Credit, 2) Registering Property, 3) Starting a Business and 4) Employing Workers. The paper begins by describing the methodology of the Doing Business reports and how the suggested reforms would lead to private sector growth. Then, using an institutional economics framework, it traces women's most binding constraints in areas of credit, land titling, business start-up and female employment that the Doing Business failed to capture. Discussions show how Doing Business-style reforms in the four areas mentioned create ambiguous impacts for women entrepreneurs by either leading to increased economic opportunities or reinforcing constraints and opening up areas for exploitation. The paper emphasises that although most of the binding constraints for female economic participation take root at the level of customs, norms and beliefs - it is possible for the government to remove discrimination in the private sector by creating informed, gender-sensitive reforms."
