This study described integrative community therapy (ICT) in the online modality as a health promotion resource in the context of COVID-19 in Latin America, characterizing the ICT circles, the ICT training centers, and the community therapists involved in this practice. It is a descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from November 2020 to July 2021 through an online questionnaire created on the Google Forms platform. The study's first stage involved the participation of ICT training centers, while the second involved community therapists. Forty-three centers participated in the first stage; 86.1% offered online ICT in the period evaluated, and 74.4% trained professionals to implement this modality. In the second stage, 66 community therapists responded to the questionnaire. Of these, 49 (74.2%) resided in Brazil, 84.8% were female, and 72.7% performed the work voluntarily, with an average of 6.1 hours per week dedicated to online circles. Community-based circles were the most cited, followed by those linked to the public sector, with an average of 20.7 participants/circle in the period. The most frequent themes were stress and negative emotions, problems with work/unemployment, and family conflicts. Strengthening self-care, participation in ICT circles, and personal empowerment stood out among the coping strategies. In conclusion, online ICT proved to be an innovative resource for health promotion during the pandemic through the articulation and engagement of community therapists and different institutions, expanding solidary social networks, and showing itself as a sustainable practice in the Latin American scenario.

The study compared the invented spelling of vowels in kindergarten native Spanish speaking children with that of English monolinguals. It examined whether, after receiving phonics instruction for short vowels, the spelling of native Spanish-speaking kindergartners would contain phonological errors that were influenced by their first language. Results showed no differences between the two groups on the number of correct short vowel spellings, even though the sounds for four of the five English short vowels do not exist in Spanish. By contrast, differences were observed in the representation of long vowels with a higher rate of error among ELLs. The students had not received explicit instruction in long vowels. ELLs appeared to be trying to represent the diphthongized nature of some English long vowels by spelling long vowels with more than one vowel. The results support the authors' hypothesis that kindergarten phonics instruction had an impact on the invented spellings of new second language vowel phonemes.

This study describes symbolic representation in block play in a culturally diverse suburban preschool classroom. Block play is "multimodal" and can allow children to experiment with materials to represent the world in many forms of literacy. Combined qualitative and quantitative data from seventy-seven block structures were collected and analyzed. The observed frequency of symbolism used for three levels of symbolism (1) pre-symbolism, (2) first level symbolism, and (3) second level symbolism was investigated. Results indicated significant differences for first level symbolism or real-world objects. Students reported making homes for Webkinz, indicating an ability to encode "multimodally" the Webkinz computer game played at home to their school block play. The implications from these findings suggest educators should consider both a sociocultural perspective on playing and children's out of-school experiences on learning. A research agenda that includes multimodality as performance is critical to early childhood education.

This study compared the English spelling of native Spanish-speaking children receiving English-only instruction with monolingual native English speaking children at the end of kindergarten. In invented spelling, young bilingual children can show us how they perceive the unique sounds of English by the way they map English letters onto non-Spanish sounds. The spelling of non-Spanish phonemes and English and Spanish stop consonants differing in voice onset time were examined. The relationship of plausible English spelling with English vocabulary knowledge was also investigated. The bilingual kindergarteners had significantly fewer correct spellings of ending stop consonants, which differ phonetically in English and Spanish, than did the monolingual group. No significant difference between the two groups at the end of kindergarten was found when spelling non-Spanish phonemes however. The lexical restructuring model was applied to explain a positive correlation between vocabulary and plausible English spellings.

This study describes the application of Bakhtin's theories of dialogism to nineteen 5-year-old preschool children's communication strategies and the ways children appropriate meaning in block play. The observed frequency of communication strategies used in three different naturally emerging social relationships--1) individuals, 2) dyads, and 3) groups of three or more children--in a culturally diverse preschool program was investigated. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed. Using Corsaro's (1986) coding system for types of utterances, results indicated significant differences in the communication strategies of 5-year-old children engaged in block play. Significant differences were also found in the communication strategies with regard to social groupings. This study suggests that 5-year-old preschool children use communication strategies and appropriate shared meaning in block play, and is important in that it has implications for encouraging language development. Describes how kindergarten children in literature-based classrooms listen to stories again and again during shared readings by teachers, and then they pretend-read the stories on their own. Uses hierarchical regression to explore relationships among factors, such as one-to-one correspondence concepts and automaticity in letter name recognition. Finds significant unique contributions to variance in voice-print matching for tag-counting, and for speed in letter naming, as well as for invented spelling. (SG)

Examines the relationship between ability to invent spellings and ability to finger-point read memorized text in 109 kindergartners in whole-language classrooms. Finds that letter name knowledge and phonemic awareness account for ability in finger-point reading, but that invented spelling, because it requires the left-to-right alphabetic principle as well, accounts for additional variance. This training study combined within-subjects (N=12) comparisons of several literacy tasks with individual case studies of first and second graders with dyslexia over a five-month reading intervention. Training focused on phonological awareness, letter-sound associations, and guided reading. The children made significant gains in standard scores on sight-word reading, nonword reading, and spelling. The article discusses the role of phonemic awareness (PA) in children reading and spelling literacy. It states that PA is a high-level metacognitive concept that involves awareness on auditory differences and sound structure of spoken words. It mentions that PA is a foundation that is crucial in both phonological encoding and decoding. Moreover, PA instructions such as blending and segmenting has a positive effect in the improvement of reading and spelling among children.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to describe the trend in the incidence of breast cancer in women under 40 in France for the period 1983–2002 and compare it with the trend observed in other age groups. Data from seven cancer registries were analysed. Annual percentage changes were estimated in different age groups using Poisson regression. During the period 1983–2002, breast cancer incidence in women under 40 increased regularly, with an estimated annual percentage change of 0.65 (95% CI: 0.03–1.26). In women aged over 40, the increase is more significant, particularly among women aged 50–74 (2.93% per year). The increase in breast cancer incidence in women under 40 was low and steady over the 20-year period considered. Even though young women did not experience such a major change in diagnostic practices as the development of screening among women aged 50–74, it is difficult to distinguish the effects of possible changes in risk factors and in diagnostic practices in the slight increase observed. The article discusses the influence of the life and works of Christopher Columbus to American paintings and prints. It notes that American artists were free to create imaginative interpretation restricted by few precedents since there was no portrait of Columbus taken from life. Some early paintings and prints on the landing of Columbus suggest that he was directly responsible for instituting transatlantic commerce in North America especially those by self-trained artists. The anglicized image of Columbus received an official literary validation with the publication of "A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus" by Washington Irving in 1828. The text of Irving and subsequent histories, biographies, and poems supplied an array of colorful episodes for artists to illustrate.

SARS-Coronavirus-2 (COVID-19) infection is a pandemic with various clinical presentations including pericarditis which seems to be rare. The aim of this observational cohort study was to describe characteristics and management of the patients hospitalized for pericarditis secondary to COVID 19 in the Hospital of Haguenau, France. We retrospectively enrolled patients admitted for pericarditis secondary to COVID 19 affection, either confirmed by a typical chest CT scan, or a positive Covid 19 PCR. Data were collected by a careful review of their medical record. 7 patients (4 men, 3 women) were included, with a median age of 60 and a median body mass index of 27.8 kg/m2. One of them took angiotensin II receptor antagonists, and none angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. Chest pain and dyspnea were the most common initial symptoms. Pericarditis were diagnosed with a median delay of 21 days after the onset of symptoms. The biology showed an inflammatory syndrome (median CRP at 104 mg/L). The troponin peak value was increased in two cases. Chest computed tomography revealed a typical lung COVID-19 affection in 4 cases and a pericardial effusion in every cases. Left ventricle ejection fraction assessed by echocardiography was normal. Two cases evolved into cardiac tamponade, which needed pericardiocentesis. One of the two cases of tamponade had a negative COVID 19 nasopharyngeal PCR and no pulmonary sign of the affection on the chest CT, but the Covid-19 PCR on pericardial fluid was positive. One patient required oxygen supply. Treatment with Colchicine was systematically initiated. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were not introduced considering the risk of respiratory worsening. The 1-month follow-up revealed no death and a decrease of the pericardial effusion. This study suggest a higher prevalence of COVID-19-associated pericarditis than initially presumed, with heterogeneous clinical presentations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, women younger than 50 years accounted for 11% of MI admitted in hospital and their incidence is increasing. The main objective of this study is to systematically collect and describe clinical, morphological and biological characteristics, in hospital mortality and 12 months outcomes. We performed a clinical prospective observational multicenter study including all female patients admitted for MI under the age of 50. Three hundred and fourteen patients were included in twenty-eight participating centers. Mean age was 42.9 (±5.7) years old. One hundred and ninety two presented with ST elevation MI and One hundred and twenty two with non ST elevation MI. A total of 75% were active smokers, 14.6% had diabetes, 26.4% high blood pressure but only 15.3% with antihypertensive therapy, 35% had a family history of cardiovascular disease. Their specific risk factor included 33% of prior complication of pregnancy, 45.5% were under hormonal contraception 15.6% were already menopaused. Among STEMI patient 90.6% presented with typical chest pain and 58.9% reported also associated symptoms (nausea, vomiting, asthenia, sweats, dizziness or palpitation). A total of 10.4% reported prior symptoms for more than 1 week before. At admission, 13% presented with cardiac arrest. Interestingly, for STEMI patients, pre-hospital antiplatelet drugs were not systematically administered. At angiography, normal coronary angiogram was found in 6.8% of STEMI and 10.7% of NSTEMI. 29.6% of the patients included had significant multivessel disease despite their young age. Spontaneous coronary artery dissection was reported in 14.6% of STEMI and 20.5% of NSTEMI. No death, but 3 strokes, 3 recurrences of MI and 1 serious bleeding occurred during the hospitalization. A comprehensive and systematized analysis of MI in young woman would improve our understanding and enable physician to offer patients a more appropriate therapeutic and monitoring.
